Trump’s Campaign Strategy: Hope Americans Grow Numb to the Escalating Coronavirus Death Toll

Just get over it
Politics • Views: 22,729

I read this Washington Post article with horror this morning.

Because the Trump administration’s plan to deal with the US’s resurgent COVID-19 pandemic is to do nothing except hope you all get numb to the ever-escalating death toll, while they continue pushing the country to reopen everything.

It was already evident that they were doing this, but now they’re actually saying it.

The goal is to convince Americans that they can live with the virus — that schools should reopen, professional sports should return, a vaccine is likely to arrive by the end of the year and the economy will continue to improve.

White House officials also hope Americans will grow numb to the escalating death toll and learn to accept tens of thousands of new cases a day, according to three people familiar with the White House’s thinking, who requested anonymity to reveal internal deliberations. Americans will “live with the virus being a threat,” in the words of one of those people, a senior administration official.

“They’re of the belief that people will get over it or if we stop highlighting it, the base will move on and the public will learn to accept 50,000 to 100,000 new cases a day,” said a former administration official in touch with the campaign.

Has anyone tried unplugging America for 30 seconds and plugging it back in? Could we possibly get some competent government that way?

Anyone?

We need to run malware, antivirus, and reboot from earlier version (version ExecutiveOffice2012).

Oh, and hold all those who engaged in the malware insertion into the political user system accountable.

Trump is directing DHS to spend resources to protect statues, all while ignoring people dying of covid19 due to uncontrolled spread. Some of that is cases due to people flying around the nation without masks, crossing interstate lines, and Trump doesn’t care about any of that.

DHS and TSA should have had strict masking and social distancing rules in effect, but Trump never focused on policies or the particulars that might make us safer.

RNC spokesperson denounces ‘all people are created equal’ on Fox News

During an appearance on Fox News, Harrington blasted an op-ed in which presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden declared “all people are created equal and should be treated equally throughout their lives.”

“His woke staffers changed it to — not ‘all men are created equal’ — all people are created equal,” the RNC spokesperson said, “and all people are guaranteed equality throughout life.”

According to Harrington, “That is not a constitutional republic.”

“That’s the same radical left socialism that has taken over his party,” she added. “That is really not just eroding our foundation, but rewriting it and out to destroy it.”

JFC, it was a staple of 19th century reform to correct that particular passage from the Declaration of Independence.

From 1848’s Declaration of Rights and Sentiments: “We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men and women are created equal…”

Who are the ones who are really erasing history?

If Trump had a real VP, such as his preferred choice Chris Christie, everything might be running smoothly because Christie would have persuaded Trump that all Donald had to do is make speeches and golf, while Christie would be managing everything. Of course, Trump would probably never have gotten elected because he never would have acquired the enthusiasm of the evangelicals.

Trump’s work wife Ivanka wouldn’t want Christie, because Christie was bad to Jared’s daddy, and that Christie was too ambitious to stop at being VP. Christie would have 25A’d Trump by now. So they went with a guy who had zero charisma and interest in being POTUS himself. Pence is the ultimate Trump toady and incompetent in all the ways that matter.

Christie would have managed the crisis better - along the lines of “getting off the fucking beach” during a hurricane. Christie at least gets some of that - public health and safety.

If I believed in a god, I would actually argue that She started the virus at nearly the perfect time to teach people some lessons. No matter how hard they try, they won’t be able to explain it away. It’s long enough from the election that the Republicans can’t wave it off as Biden’s fault. It’s just a shame that innocent people are going to get hurt from it as well.

South Carolina—we raise our hypocrites from scratch.

Lindsey today:

Lindsey 2015 (even AFTER the Charleston massacre)

Graham said: “Well, at the end of the day it’s time for people in South Carolina to revisit that decision. [That] would be fine with me, but this is part of who we are…”

Nikki Haley in 2014, when her opponent, Vincent Sheheen called for the flag to come down, dismissed it as a “campaign stunt” and said:

Then, after the massacre, she did a total 180:

The day after the shooting, Haley’s posture had changed. “We woke up today and the heart and soul of South Carolina was broken,” she said.

And, of course, drama queen Nikki claimed to have suffered PTSD following the shootings.

Hideous people.

There’s a lot of singers who simply can’t sing on key and it drives me crazy. Some mask it with a lot of vibrato, which means they at least approach the note.

Granted there are some artists who can provide a wonderful performance while not singing on key, through emotional impact, but those are a minority (think Joe Cocker for an example).

But sadly I can’t tolerate many famous artists because they don’t sing on key. In a concert setting, the best I ever heard was kd lang years ago. Every note was right on. Pure pleasure, even though much of the material wasn’t to my taste.

“The Americans for Tax Reform Foundation, a conservative-allied group headed by anti-tax activist Grover Norquist, took Covid-19 small business relief funds from the federal government,” Bloomberg reports.

“The nonprofit foundation — which advocates restraint in government spending and says it works to educate taxpayers on ‘costly government programs’ — took a loan between $150,000 and $350,000 from the Paycheck Protection Program.”

Trump’s going on a twitter bender.

There must be a bunch of bad news about to come out this week, because he does this right before really bad news drops.

Maybe an inkling on the Supreme Court tax case? Maybe it’s the book by his niece. Or, it’s the body count taking center stage again - because of his failures.

His latest tweets are demanding schools be open in the fall for in-person instruction. That was preceded by a tweet hocking HCQ again.

This strategy assumes that the more people whose lives and families are directly affected by COVID, the more people who get sick/have parents, children, siblings, relatives get sick and die, the more people will just “accept it”.
Somehow I doubt that. What has spared Trump to date is the many people who haven’t personally gotten sick, had excruciatingly long recoveries including now-chronic health issues, or lost someone they cared about.
That is not going to continue to be the case.
As my parents, who live in a big senior living complex told me, a rather sheltered woman there remarked to them that the key issue with COVID is, and I quote, “it doesn’t just affect poor people.”

Me and my family were lucky to see kd lang live, round about the time Ingénue was released, at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. We’d already became fans of her work when Channel 4 broadcast a concert of hers, so we leapt at the chance to see her live. At one point, she announced she was going to do a cover of Roy Orbison’s “Crying”, and I remember someone behind me going “Oh NO!!!”, but by the end of that song, the whole audience was giving her a standing ovation.

Here’s a clip from that Channel 4 performance. The song is “Big Boned Gal”.

A hotel clerk was the victim of a reportedly racist attack while on the job.

Chrystal Caldwell, who is Black and works as a desk clerk at the Mystic Quality Inn in Stonington, Connecticut, explained that a couple beat her up and yelled racial slurs at her. “She said both of her attackers were white and in their late 20s or early 30s,” The Day writes.

The 59-year-old—who has been at the inn for seven years—told WTNH that the New York couple was staying there and ended up attacking her twice. The man initially called when he wasn’t getting hot water in his room. Caldwell offered to have maintenance fix it or move the couple to a new room, but Caldwell said the man got angry and began calling her names, also telling her he’d send his girlfriend down to “kick her ass.”

Minutes later, the man came to the front desk. Caldwell notified her general manager and executive housekeeper, who spoke with the man who continued to threaten Caldwell. When she spoke to him, he swung at her over the desk, according to The Day. She fought back, but was still punched in the head; Caldwell said doctors at Pequot Health Center told her she suffered a concussion as well as severe harm to her right eye and damage to her back, ribs, and wrist.

The hotel called the police, who told Caldwell to not leave the employee lounge while they looked at surveillance footage (which is now featured in numerous news stories about the attack). However, when Caldwell went into the hallway to get ice for her face, she was attacked again. The girlfriend first approached Caldwell, blaming her for scratching her boyfriend. The couple then attacked her, pushing her to the ground and kicking her in the ribs. The man attempted to stomp her face, but she was able to get off the ground.

The altercation happened while the police were still in the building.

Fox61 reported that the girlfriend who attacked Caldwell sent a message to the news station saying Caldwell attacked them and that her “case would unravel in court.” But the New London State’s Attorney’s office and the Stonington police have reportedly been wrapping up extraditable warrants for the man and woman to bring them back to Connecticut.

Even though the police were there, they let the couple go back to New York.

What a total mess. I’m thinking the ‘have an inexperienced businessman in charge of government’ experiment has given us the results we need.

Tell me in what business would it make sense to hire somebody for the top position with no experience in the profession? We did that with our presidency 3.5 years ago. Seems to have been a bad decision. With no experience you usually hire entry level workers so they can learn the trade. But with Trump, the opposite.

It’s like the GOP has a list of everything about America they want to destroy that _REALLY_ make America great, and are destroying them to own the libs.

(For any Tru’umpists lurking here, having colleges that are that high quality* that lots of people coming to a country so that they can pump billions of dollars in tuition, partially subsidize costs for Americans, and so that the best can be convinced to remain here and manage to contribute to American society is a good thing. I mean, isn’t buying American big amongst the Trumpist crowd.

Countries generally accept the return of their own citizens. Many countries have periodically been organizing flights for the return of their own citizens in the US and other countries and unavailable to return due to shutting of borders/flights (e.g, India).

There’s the bigger question as to once they’ve returned will they be able to come back to the US, in case their visa to enter the US has expired, and as a result they need to go back to a US consulate to get their visa stamped. And if that becomes even iffier than it has been in the past, the desireability of an American education plummets…

At the very least, the fall semester, and next spring semester will still have the cheeto in place….

The lie that many never-Trumpers continue to tell themselves is that there is any principle underpinning conservatism other than “I got mine, fuck you.”

Trump was inevitable given the way the GOP has degenerated since the civil rights era of the 1960s.

Goldwater getting the nomination was an early milestone. Then came Nixon and his disgrace, setting in motion the long term GOP plan to have more unprincipled GOP senators instead of better GOP presidents.

Reagan was also a major step downward. At that point, lying about everything became the Republican trademark.

Next we have Gingrich, who started the total partisan warfare that persists to this day, still unrecognized as such by the media and by too many Democrats.

These foundations were all in place by the time W Bush was in office, who careened from disaster to disaster precisely because Republicans can’t accept reality.

Now Trump is amplifying all the worst traits of the W Bush administration, while adding a personality cult and openly authoritarian tendencies to the already unbearably toxic Republican mess.

With this trend line it is certain that the next GOP presidential candidate will be worse than Trump, even though that’s literally unthinkable now.

On a post about a little girl selling lemonade to help her community. How dare she not address that and solve it singlehandedly? And then go on to say that Sen. Chris Whipple - wapo

“Another question may be as important: How does Trump absorb information? For decades, the president’s daily briefs have sounded early warnings on everything from enemy troop movements to pandemics to terrorist attacks. Yet under Trump, the president’s intelligence briefings have almost completely broken down. His oral briefings, given daily to most presidents, now take place as rarely as once or twice a week. These sessions often turn into monologues in which the president spitballs woolly conspiracy theories from Breitbart, Fox News and hangers-on at Mar-a-Lago, say intelligence officials who are familiar with his briefings. Convinced that the intelligence community is a ‘deep state,’ honeycombed with traitors, the president rarely believes anything the CIA tells him.”

“In short, Trump is unbriefable.”

of course the answer is ‘he doesn’t’

First, a lot of these traitors were from the same classes as, and had served with, the Union politicians and Regular military.

The second, more practical reason was the expectation that by keeping the Southern leadership intact, they would not allow the bitter-enders to try and start a guerilla war. I get it. But, and this is a big but to me, without accountability and consequences, it will only happen again. Perhaps not another civil war (yet, because it’s never been dealt with, yet) but the shit continued to live on - to this very day.

Accountability applies to trump too. He had got to pay for his treason and malfeasance. Barr, too. All those GOP fuckers who went to Russia on the 4th of July. No jokes about Putin paying them, full on prison/execution/confiscation of personal property.

Accountability and real consequences. Real life, knock your teeth out consequences.

If we don’t deal with it now, and push accountability down the road, it’ll happen again and again.

Trump should have been aggressively investigated for likely tax evasion and money laundering years ago. The fact that neither the Democrats nor Republicans bothered with him is an indictment of our entire system. Prosecutors are willing to throw the book at random petty criminals, but we haven’t seen a serious crackdown on white collar crime since the Savings and Loan debacle in the 80s; the exceptions to this rule are people who rip off other rich people like Madoff or the Enron guys.

I agree with you. I am outraged too.

I agree that there needs to be some sort of accountability for the criminal behavior. At minimum to deter others.

Unfortunately, I see a few things that are going to slow things down.

First, iokiyar. Trump and McConnell have damaged the justice system with their placement of a lot of idealogues as judges.

Second, the damage that they have done has already killed many thousands of Americans. With many more thousands likely to die between now and the end of Trump’s term. It seems to me that no punishment, however harsh will ever be enough.

Third, a lot of presidents have done illegal things in pursuit of American National objectives. Most, of course, honored some sort of boundaries and self control. Trump and his lackeys are going to hide behind this fig leaf as much as possible.

Fourth, there is a tendancy to admire people who successfully do stuff that isn’t illegal, but should be. And Congress has been so polarized for so long, that it may not be able to pass laws to cut down on this crap.

My big hope is that he is held accountable for their many pre-President crimes. And that his spawn and henchmen (and women… henchpersons?)are held accountable for all their crimes.

I hate hail, scares the crap out of me. We had some a few weeks ago that was about the size of a hazelnut and I thought for sure the cars were fucked. We lucked out, it just knocked tons of debris out of the trees in the backyard. Glad the cars survived and no one got hurt.

Quarter size hail is nothing. Now, when ping pong start falling, you’re going to get something more besides leaf damage, like small dents. When lemons start to fall, you are going to start losing windshields.

When pool balls start to fall (and the 50-70 MPH winds that accompanying a storm that strong) you are going to get the windward siding and your windows on your house smashed, and your roof, along with the windward side bark on your trees.

When softballs start falling, people outside and in cars are going to get killed, and there is a good chance your house will be destroyed by a tornado.

Quarter-sized hail in Texas is kind of pffft. It’s just routine weather. Rare but notable in Austin (we have a metal roof, and it can get LOUD), but I’ve seen quarter-sized hail drifts a foot thick in our yard. You lose a lot of leaves and branches, though.

Now, in west Texas, in The Alley, it’s very common. We don’t have shelters, here. Everyone does in The Alley.

The next time there’s a major economic fuck up - and we all know there will be, because we never fucking learn - can someone in Congress seriously propose giving money directly to actual people instead of giving it to businesses?

Like, I get that businesses were hurting. But how many times do we have to do this thing were we create a stupid fucking system to give businesses money and then it turn out that we either didn’t have enough money to give, gave too much to the people who shouldn’t have gotten it, didn’t actually make sure it would be spent the way they said it would, and all other manner of fuck up?

How about this: have a social security number? Ok, if you’re over 18 you get X amount. If you’re under 18 your parents get .5X (or whatever the acceptable amount is).

The story about megachurch pastor John Ortberg’s protection of his son Johnny, in the face of Johnny’s admitted attraction to prepubescent boys, finally made it to Religion News Service. The story is long, good and detailed.

(RNS) — In the summer of 2018, a volunteer at Menlo Church came to the Rev. John Ortberg seeking help.

The congregation member, who volunteered with youth and children at the Bay area megachurch and in the community, had been experiencing “an unwanted thought pattern of attraction to minors” and needed the pastor’s support.

After hearing this admission, Ortberg asked if the volunteer had ever acted on that attraction.

The volunteer said no.

Once Ortberg was convinced the volunteer was telling the truth and was not a danger to others, he prayed for the person and offered a referral for counseling and then allowed the volunteer to continue working with children.

In what Menlo Church’s elders would later call “poor judgment” and a betrayal of trust, the megachurch pastor did not notify the church’s staff of the volunteer’s admitted attraction to minors.

He did not notify the church’s elder board.

He did not suggest the volunteer stop working with children - in fact, the pastor and his family encouraged the volunteer in his work as a coach of an Ultimate Frisbee team for high school students.

Instead, Ortberg, the lead pastor of Menlo, kept what he had learned about the volunteer secret from his congregation.

Especially the volunteer’s name: John “Johnny” Ortberg III, the pastor’s youngest son.

religionnews.com

The person who exposed this back in February was Daniel Lavery, John Ortberg’s other son. At that time, Lavery did not disclose that the person he was discussing was his brother.

Now there is a woman named Julie Roys, she calls herself a journalist, and apparently she has a contract with RNS to republish their stuff. So she did. But she so HATED the fact that Daniel Lavery is transgender, that she removed all the “he/his/him” pronouns and replaced them all with “Lavery.” So of course the article reads for shit.

julieroys.com

Julie Roys blocked me on Twitter the last time this came up in February, because I would not give it up. And I was annoyed that she was doing it again. So I dropped a dime to RNS and the writer on Twitter.

Tired of this bullshit. FTR, this is the incident and the way “Christians” tried to make the transgender person the issue instead of the guy with the attraction to prepubescent boys that just stomped on my last church nerve forever.

Because Republicans and Libertarians have brainwashed a hundred million people or so that demand apparently doesn’t matter to the economy.

They also think that the national debt, business debt, and personal debt work the same way.

They also think that printing money always leads to inflation (because they don’t understand the whole demand thing).

“According to people familiar with the project, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff — who was previously seen by the First Lady as a loyal confidant, and had helped plan President Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration in Washington, DC — will release a tell-all, Melania and Me, on September 1st,” reported Lachlan Cartwright and Asawin Suebsaeng. “People with knowledge of the project say that the content of the book is largely negative, and that the manuscript heavily trashes the First Lady.”

We have a lot of work, but I think the Confederates (I use this in place of The South because the South no longer contains all of them and so much of the South is less conservative than the plains) are realizing that they’re finally going to lose the war.

Trump was inevitable given the way the GOP has degenerated since the civil rights era of the 1960s.

With this trend line it is certain that the next GOP presidential candidate will be worse than Trump, even though that’s literally unthinkable now.

I recommend The 4th Turning. You trend lines are correct but they reset every 80 years or so. Read it, it might cheer you up.

Wow. That was quite the storm here in Bergen County. Worst hailstorm I’ve ever personally experienced. Largest hail I’ve ever witnessed. Nonstop lightning and heavy rain for about 20 minutes or so. But for about 5 minutes it was quarter sized hail.

Cars seem to be ok. So that’s good.

hi

The weather radio just popped off with a severe thunderstorm warning for my village, with expected 60mph winds and life-threatening hail in the next few minutes.

Was it you who suggested we join the “roof of the month club?”

There has probably never been a better example of “depraved indifference to human life” than Trump.

Or the word “genocidaire.”

re: #367 Charles Johnson

Admittedly I’m saying this because I keep seeing parallels between Trump’s behavior and the behavior I’ve seen from abusers I’ve known, and I’m definitely affected by my own experiences, but…yes.

If you’re an empathy-less narcissist then you hurt the people that care about you because it’s a test—will they continue to give you what they want even when you demand more and more unreasonable things—but also try and find ways to hurt anyone that doesn’t play into your unreasonableness as well. The coronavirus is the perfect vehicle for advancing both ends…particularly since Trump is a coward and a disease means he can cause harm through passivity. Demand of his followers that they risk themselves—“If you love me, deny this real, dangerous thing is real and dangerous”—but also just enjoy the illness running through a general populace that’s either criticizing him or just not giving him adulation.

The more needy he gets the more he’s going to lean into cruelty because he needs that power and control fix. And the more he sees himself as down-power and likely to lose the election, the more he’s going to deliberately do damage because everybody deserves to suffer if they’re not giving him what he wants.

The governor of Massachusetts is a republican.

Exception that proves the rule. And I’d really like to see the MA Democrats get their act together in terms of running for state level offices.

We shouldn’t have any blue states with R governors on principle alone, and also because if people see an example or two of Republicans who aren’t evil incarnate they falsely assume this is true of other Republicans.
