Colbert: Trump Desperately Attacks Dr. Fauci, Horribly Dances for Votes

As the election fast approaches, Joe Biden is courting voters on the video game Animal Crossing while President Trump makes his case for a second term by lashing out at the country’s most trusted doctor, wondering out loud why he’s lost support among women, and subjecting everyone to his frightening dance moves. #Colbert #Monologue #BetterKnowABallot

How disgusting! Everyone knows that plain vinegar and oil is the only choice for naked carousing, especially when the weather is starting to cool.
Naked teen covered in ranch dressing crashes at Kansas gas station, sheriff says

A teenage boy who was naked and covered in ranch dressing crashed a vehicle at a Kansas gas station early Saturday morning.

The disturbance was reported to 911 at around 3:30 a.m. at the Petro Deli convenience store, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

“A 17-year-old male was naked and under the influence of a substance,” the sheriff’s office said.

Late last week, two Trump appointees to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals decided to try to close the only two abortion clinics in the state of Kentucky. And with a brand new rightwing zealot about to be added to the Supreme Court, rightwing judges are trying their hardest to get abortion back in front of our highest court.

We don’t know yet where it will go from here, but this case could end legal abortion in the state of Kentucky — or even all around the country.

From the last post:

re: #310 Hecuba’s daughter

Alito and Barrett, definitely. But I don’t think that Roberts, Gorsuch, Thomas, and Kavanaugh are likely to take such a drastic step. Aren’t they more likely to vote to return the decision to the states?

The problem is, there is no precedent for “returning the issue to the states” like they would have to create, whole cloth, a legal theory that gives them a basis for saying something that is recognized as a right protected by the federal constitution is no longer protected by it but can be protected by the state constitutions”. It is why the approach has been “upholding the central decision of Roe and Casey” and then declaring any burden created by the states to not be an undue burden.

The only real legal basis they have for overturning Roe is saying that the 14th amendment equal protection clause applies at conception. Which is so fucking crazy pants that they know it would fail.

Plus, once they create that precedent for “returning the issue to the states” they open the door for other issues to get returned to the states… like gun control

I think that they assume that after nearly 4 years of full on hate-filled legislation coupled with casual cruelty and blatant incompetence that Dems are just gonna “move on” and try and heal the nation because that’s what took place during all of the previous R administrations. I think there’s quite a bit of sustained bitterness from core Dems that this methodology is obviously not working because the GOP only follows the rules that they choose to or they simply make up new rules that are only applicable when they’re in control.

While Joe Biden is old school, I think the personal attacks on his family and with Harris as his running mate are going to make sure that all of these creatures, great and small, are going to have to find a way to justify their lawbreaking… I could be wrong, but I think the time of allowing one side to do whateverthefuck they wish sans repercussions is over.

I really wonder sometimes, if the SoCons really understand the Faustian bargain they made with Trump.

EVERY Trump voter made a Faustian bargain.

- Wealthy, ‘fiscally conservative moderates’ sacrificed their reputations and dignity. They traded social justice, the planet, their daughter’s rights, international relations, safe gun policy, the health care of millions and much more for their own tax cut.

- The struggling, white middle class traded it all for a fictional job promise.

- and they all debased themselves and their country to maintain control of the Supreme Court.

then the bargain got worse - what they hoped would be a temporary political compromise has become an indelible moral stain.

i mentioned this a day or two ago because virtually any deal that passes now would be a small feather for trump.

- trump tells mnuchin to accept a deal with pelosi - most any deal
- house passes bill quickly
- trump leans on mitch. if mitch wont play ball, trump can endorse mcgrath vocal and loud
- trump can also lean on 10-15 senators directly to reach 60

it would be a small win. wouldnt change much.
but it’s too strategic for the trump cadre’s thinking

Gov. Beshear reported 1,312 new covid cases today, a record high for a Tuesday, and 16 deaths. The pandemic is raging out of control nationwide, as a matter of policy, because the Administration is going for herd immunity, the reason being they don’t want to do anything about it.

Blame for raging out of control in Kentucky can be squarely laid on the heads of Kentucky GOP and Chambers of Commerce, who have fought every single one of Beshear’s measures to minimize the pandemic here.

People keep saying this, and I’m not seeing evidence of it. Yes, there have been a very, VERY small number of reinfections, but that’s out of millions of documented cases.

The virus mutates, but what I’m hearing is that it’s not a fast-mutating virus, certainly not on the order of influenza or HIV. The particular proteins that vaccines are targeting are especially unlikely to mutate. Boosters, maybe, but I doubt the yearly guessing cycle of flu shots will be the model.

And if we can stomp it down with wide enough vaccination, then there will be fewer strains developing that can cause problems.

He’s an American historian and retired professor of history at the University of Dayton. During the 1980s and 1990s, he authored numerous scholarly publications. Which Democrat did Trump put into his cabinet?

The Democratic party needs to stop thinking it has to be so “nice”.

George W Bush appointed Norman Mineta (D-CA) to be Secretary of Transportation.

Obama kept Gates on at DOD, later had Hagel and attempted to appoint Judd Gregg to Commerce but was withdrawn because McConnell was ready to fight the potential supermajority in the Senate.

Trump is an asshole and no Democrat who wanted a political future was ever going to serve in his administration - not that he’d want any to anyway.

It isn’t necessarily a bad thing to have a cabinet member or two from the other party. Gives you a varying opinion on issues. Reminds Americans that we are more than our political party registration.

re: #129 BeachDem

“Team of rivals” is also an outdated construct when the other “team” has specifically built an entire closed cultural system in which your “team” are the baby-killing communist Satanists that don’t deserve due process. It’s not a function of one bad actor or even a small collection of bad actors: it’s baked in over forty years that Republicans can dictate the law but not be bound by it while the rest of us probably should be shot.

No, I’m not exaggerating much. Just like every black man person that dies is shot turns out to be a criminal after the fact—not because they did an actual crime, but because the mere implication of “threat” to a white conservative is a crime worthy of extrajudicial execution—we’re watching the same culture use the idea of “antifa” as a way of re-categorizing anyone they feel deserves to be disenfranchised and hurt.

Individual personalities that seem “reasonable” amount to sweet fuck all compared to the force of a culture that believes that the whole out-group are pervert monsters or dupes for pervert monsters: for every active reactionary pushing us towards fascism there’s dozens of people who put it out of their heads that there are actual people paying the consequences of conservative policies. Every reasonable conservative I’ve known has talked themselves into first believing the Reagan did nothing wrong, then Bush did nothing wrong, and almost all are voting for Trump because they don’t see him as doing anything wrong. They still believe in policy positions that hurt millions of people even though there’s absolutely no evidence they work.

The superficial performance of comity—less swear words, a companionable handshake, etiquette—does not change that what they do hurts people and they have spent half a century inventing reasons that the harm done was deserved.

What’s the basis for trust at this point?

“He’s nice, except when he’s angry he hits people”
“Brutus is an honorable man, except that one time”

I’m honestly grossed out by the unhealthy marriage dynamic that seems to still be the basis for talking about politics. The absolute minimum of decorum is seen as a sign of a some bond worth preserving, while leftist observations of how this is not fucking working because over and over Republicans will play just nice enough to cheat bigger, but give NOTHING provoke more anger and resentment.

Heh.

Any perception that Republicans have an advantage on national security issues should be erased by looking at who’s backing the two candidates…

President Trump released a list of 66 Republican “former national security and senior officials” who have endorsed him. Most of them are not actually senior, and few have any actual national security experience. Mainly it’s a list of Republican apparatchiks, including former Rep. Bob Livingston (who had to quit Congress after a sex scandal); former governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi; Trump’s personal lawyer and former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani; Washington lobbyist and former Trump aide Matt Schlapp; former Heritage Foundation president Edwin J. Feulner; journalist Deroy Murdock (identified as a former member of the Education Department’s advisory board on international educational programs); and John Deming, a former deputy press secretary to John McCain. (They couldn’t even find a former McCain press secretary to back Trump?)

Biden has the endorsement of 780 retired military officers and national security appointees — nearly 12 times as many as Trump — including storied foreign policy hands, such as former undersecretary of state Nicholas Burns and former deputy secretary of state William J. Burns, who have worked for both Democrats and Republicans.

Even more impressively, the ranks of Biden endorsers include 129 Republicans — prominent ones.

Biden has the support of more than 200 retired admirals and generals, including at least 22 four-stars. (Trump does not have the support of a single four-star flag officer.)

And Trump wants the next debate to be on foreign policy?

I concluded that the main advantage to democracy is not that it enables you to get the best candidate for an office, because its rarely obvious, but it provides a mechanism to get rid of a bad one without having to resort to a coup or a civil war.

Only progressives who want to end up in a major world war. I don’t think it’s so much the “military-industrial establishment” but actual people with actual experience—

Officers are usually reluctant to get involved in partisan politics, but the stakes are so high this time that many are speaking out.

i.e. McRaven, who said:
“We need a president who understands the importance of American leadership, at home and abroad. We need a leader of integrity whose decency and sense of respect reflects the values we expect from our president.

The article concludes:

Trump’s incompetence has exacerbated the covid-19 crisis, turning it into one of the largest mass-casualty events in U.S. history. Imagine what he would do if he were to win a second term and confront an equally grave foreign policy crisis. The national security veterans know it’s a risk we can’t run.

I couldn’t easily find the CDC news release. The one they did in June, about excess deaths up to then, is still the article they have under excess deaths.

We need to read the actual CDC article because news reports tend to misunderstand scientific information.

The reported death count is already around 225k, so it sounds like there are about 75k deaths so far this year that are not being followed up with a proper autopsy to find out why they died.

If the US was on top of the pandemic in January, like we should have been, then there would have been a Covid-19 test given to every death whose cause was not obvious.

Californians Are Shattering Early Ballot Return Records. Will It Translate To Record-Breaking Turnout, Too?

There are still two weeks until Election Day, and one in every six California voters has already returned their ballot, a number largely influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, a ballot tracker by consulting firm Political Data, Inc. showed nearly 4 million ballots had been returned statewide, shattering previous early voting records.

“Right now, we’re at a pace three times where we were in the 2016 general election,” said the company’s Vice President, Paul Mitchell.

[…]

This is the first year I voted early. I will miss going to the precinct booths.

Hard to tell how total turnout will be affected, at least here in California. There will be no surprises in the major races. If there is any drama this year it will be a couple of the ballot initiatives.

While I generally voted how the local Dems recommended, I did break with them on a couple of initiatives. And a few of my local races the county Democratic party did not bother to recommend anyone, so there’s that too.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Oct 20, 2020 • 4:11:41pm

I left out the important parts:

However, the majority of voters who have already returned their ballots are people who were already likely to vote this year: older voters who belong to a political party. According to the ballot tracker, two-thirds of ballots returned so far have come from voters over 50.

“We know that this sliver of the electorate is extremely motivated. Not just extremely motivated to vote, but extremely motivated to vote earlier than they ever have,” Mitchell said. “This is not yet a big surge of younger, minority, renters, students -- those kinds of populations that we expect to be low-turnout.”

So even making voting easier has not seen the increase in those demos that everyone was hoping would show up more this year.

Top State Department Official Repeatedly Drank To Excess On The Job: Watchdog

An unpublished inspector general report obtained by HuffPost raises concerns about longtime GOP operative Cam Henderson, who is close to Mike Pompeo.

Well If I was forced to work for Pompousass I’d be “fondling the grape” too! 😉

sliced in half, placed cut side down in a baking dish with water. Medium size ~45 minutes; Large ~60 minutes.

I know they are done when my glasses fog up when I open the oven door.

godamnit, you’d think somebody on the internet before you could have said “cut side down.”

Thanksgiving might be a national superspreader event this year.

I usually visit my parents over Christmas, but I’m having a hell of a time deciding whether or not to do it this year. The big sticking point for me is the necessity to travel by air (I’m not doing a CA to CO road trip in winter).

The RAZZIE gang usually gets together for Thanksgiving but this year we won’t meet until Covid is under control and then we’re gonna throw a party!

We are debating Thanksgiving with fishfolk back in Indiana, as well. We can make that a drive, but driving through the COVID Capital of the World, Wisconsin, is not a fun prospect.

My least favorite holiday.
1) I hate turkey
2) Performative socializing
3) Endless guilt trips when I point out 1) and 2)
4) No close family, so I get guilted with people I don’t know.
5) Forced to overlook bigotry in the cause of comity.
6) People will hate you afterwards with no guilt.
7) But YOU will be guilted endlessly!
8) Performative cooking
9) The weather will suck.
10) You’ll get to do this again with ten times more guilt for Christmas!

Even since I got stuck in O’Hare overnight trying to visit family for Thanksgiving, I have given up on traveling for that holiday. Locally, I don’t know anyone who is big into Thanksgiving celebrations, so this holiday has been a non-event for me for years.

The biggest issue is finding something to eat that day.

Joe and Kamala are just not energizing the youth, it would appear.

If they win, and I expect them to, it will be down to how much a failure Trump is as a President (and as a human.)

Absentee and Early Voting by Youth in the 2020 Election

In key states, including electoral battlegrounds, more than 500,000 young people have already voted in 2020.

Voting in the 2020 presidential election is underway. Millions of Americans have already cast early and absentee ballots, including over one million votes cast by young voters ages 18-29. In major presidential and Senate battlegrounds, and other states that will be key to election outcomes this November, youth have already cast more than 500,000 votes.

Voted today. Total time about 90 minutes, most of which was standing in line, everyone masked! Fun part: an acquaintance somehow recognized me through our masks.

She was distributing Democratic literature on voting and noted that there were 2 judges that the Party recommended a vote against. One of the two had gotten 0% rating from all the Illinois legal associations, the other was a name that I did not recognize — he had received approval from 12 of the 13 associations. She explained that there was some position he took that irritated the Democratic Party so they wanted him out, but I decided to vote for him anyway, given that the Bar Associations (Chicago Council of Lawyers, Cook County Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association) all rated him as qualified. In any case, it is very rare for a judge, no matter how incompetent or unqualified, to fail to meet the 60% threshold for retention.

First world tech problems.

Windows doesn’t like my My Cloud drive anymore. It used to let me mount the drive so I could file transfer my photos for archival storage. No more. Windows imposed some new restriction, so now I can’t even see the Cloud Drive.

Chromebook lets me see the drive but not the specific contents and I can’t do file transfers there either.

My phone? That android is letting me see the drive and contents. But I can’t get the files on there without first using some other service.

None of this is easy or making me want to keep the WD My Cloud drive if it’s going to be a PITA for long term storage.

And no, I’m not going to Mac. That’s not in the cards.

Prosecutor never even considered homicide against the cops who killed Breonna Taylor. They started with the wonton endangerment and looked to lesser charges from there.

Homicide was never once raised by the prosecutors. They fixed it so that the grand jury had no choice but to consider these ticky-tack charges that show prosecutors cared more for cops shooting drywall than murdering an African American woman in her own home.

She was promoted as recently as Sept. 1, 2019, earning a nearly 12% pay bump to $205,000 annually. When Mase was promoted in April 2018, a supervisor wrote that she “consistently exceeded standards” in all her roles at the agency. Good point. A lot depends on the oven or stove and of course, how well you want it done. For me, I’ve found 350 degrees at 15-20 minutes seems to work well for a lot of stuff-vegetables, reheating. Of course, I’m a little spoiled with my Instant Pot with its pre-programmed settings. Just play with the timer to get what I want.

Have anyone become a bit better cook due to quarantine?
