John Oliver: Plastics Are Harming the Environment and Recycling Isn’t Fixing It

Environment • Views: 29,268

Plastic is in everything, from the clothes we wear to the water we drink. John Oliver explains how plastics are harming the planet, why recycling isn’t the solution you think it is, and why fixing the problem will be up to not just consumers, but corporations and policymakers.

Markets don’t work unless the price of a product or service reflects the actual costs involved, including downstream costs. Plastics are cheap to produce and use, but the disposal costs get socialized.

It also means that there is little incentive to develop alternatives as they cannot compete on price.

No amount of awareness is going to change that until we institute policies that force the price of plastic to be covered by the producers and consumers.

We are gonna pay for it one way or the other…

If there was a way to use plastic for some form of renewable energy that would be amazing.

I got a notice from USCIS. Average processing time for applications at the closest office to me (New Orleans) is ten months so I’ll be lucky if I become a citizen by Christmas.

I will however be one in plenty of time to vote in the mid-terms. :D

That argument basically applies to workers.

That argument basically applies to workers.

It applies to markets in general. I do not see the Free Market as any sort of ideology, it is just a good mechanism for balancing supply and demand and for directing capital to where it can do the most benefit.

But even Adam Smith wrote that markets have to benefit everyone: producers and consumers, borrowers and lenders, employers and employees.

Responding to a post near the end of the last thread:

re: #211 sagehen

In the 1960’s (when our population was about 250 million), we used to have more than 50,000 fatalities every single year from car wrecks. My dad used to shake his head, and note that all the Americans killed in the Vietnam war was the same as every year’s auto deaths.

But Congress did something about it. They appropriated money for research, and when the results of that research came in we got seat belt laws, air bags, stricter drunk driving limits, new materials for windshields, better shielding around gas tanks, better tire treads and paving materials that were less slippery, speed bumps and stoplights and guardrails in selected locations…

These days, even with our 30% higher population and generally longer commutes, auto fatalities are about 30,000 a year.

I can’t help but be reminded of the line in Goldfinger when Bond talks about the ‘flaws’ in Operation Grand Slam:

Bond: You’ll kill 60,000 people uselessly.
Goldfinger (dismissively): American motorists kill that many every two years.

Huh. Did a little Internet Fu on the Congressman’s claim that DC doesn’t have any new car dealerships.

And, um, it appears to be correct. There are 73 within 10 miles of Zip Code 20045 (the center of DC), but none in DC itself.

It has to be a zoning prohibition, as there are plenty of gas stations and car repair shops.

And his thumbs-up gesture to the Capitol rioters will be one of his brand signifiers.

They’re real AMERICAN cars, but real Republicans hate new American car companies, given all the anti-Tesla legislation they’ve been passing in state houses — namely the prohibitions on letting them have their own dealerships.. Republicans like free market capitalism* when it’s convenient, and give some @#$ excuse when it doesn’t benefit them or their paymasters.

On a related note, did the Republicans manage to pass anti-Tesla crap for DC when they had the trifecta?

11 National Guard Soldiers transporting vaccines held at gunpoint in West Texas, suspect arrested

LUBBOCK COUNTY, Texas (KCBD) - An Arizona man has been arrested after he cut off and held at gunpoint a caravan of National Guardsmen transporting COVID-19 vaccines to Matador, Texas around 7 a.m. this morning, according to Idalou Police.

Larry Harris, of Wilcox, Arizona, is accused of following three National Guardsmen vans from Love’s Travel Station on East Regis Street in Lubbock to about two miles east of Idalou. Police say Harris attempted multiple times to run the vans off of the roadway. He then turned his vehicle into oncoming traffic on Hwy. 62/82 and stopped the vans. He then pointed a gun at an unarmed National Guardsman, identified himself as a detective, and demanded to search the vehicles and ordered the rest of the unarmed guardsmen out of their vehicles at gunpoint.

Harris told police he thought the people in the vans had kidnapped a woman and child. All 11 of the guardsmen were in uniform.

When police arrived on the scene, Harris was in possession of a loaded Colt 1911 pistol .45 Caliber. He had an additional loaded magazine on his person and another loaded magazine in his truck, police say.

The Idalou officers took Harris into custody without further incident.

Harris was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful restraint of 11 National Guard Soldiers, unlawful carrying of a weapon, impersonating a Public Servant, and interference with Texas Military Forces.

Abbott normally thinks that every meth-head yokel out there should have multiple firearms everywhere, but soldiers on a vital mission; one that has been subject to specific threats no less, should be un-armed? It’s downright suspicious. It would be easy for Biden to federalize this mission, overrule the complicit GQP, and arm the troops.

So far, the most honest response I’ve seen from the GQP on the question of DC statehood came from Foxx asking if Mayor Bowser thinks that the future state will elect Dems or uber-Dems. All this petty horseshit about car dealerships or yard signs is the usual chaff thrown up when Repubs realize they’re on the losing side of a debate.

Gotta say, my 1st Moderna shot happened right after I proved who I was and had a valid reservation. The gal who administered the shot recommended I begin exercising my arm immediately after…which I began doing by swinging my arm side-side even as I walked to the assigned 15min holding chair. Many other holding chairs were occupied but folks just sat there. I continued swinging my arm throughout the 15 min period rather than just sit there like the others who probably heard the same recommendation.

Result: No soreness whatever. I felt fine and for a few days afterword only had a sore spot immediately around the point of needle entry which was just a dot.

2nd Shot: Arm side-side. Result same-same.

In the 20 years since 9/11, we’ve heard case after case of terrorists who blew themselves up, shot dozens of people, crashed aircraft, and other acts whose families were caught in the crossfire and had to bear the stigma of their loved one’s crimes.

But they were brown, so instead of getting concern and sympathy, they got outrage and fury over not doing “enough” to stop the tragedy from occurring or denouncing the religion they’d followed their entire lives.

The same is true of Coal power - outrageous family wealth dynasties have been built on coal, but they want want their users to pick up the environmental costs of coal ash. propublica.org

Result same-same.

instead of getting the second shot in my right arm (again), i’m gonna ask that they use the left arm and that they use the special left arm vaccine. I want full body coverage.

Say it with me, class: “The cruelty is the point.”

Willard’s about as close as I’ve seen the GQP get to admitting that they supported Trump’s inhumane and illegal policies because they felt that such “disincentivized” immigration to the US. Ripping kids from their parents, stuffing them in poorly-run camps, and allowing disease to run wild weren’t short-comings of the system, they were organized efforts to scare poor and desperate people into avoiding entering this country.

I’ve been there at both the dentist and eye doctor. Years ago I had this growth on the inside of my lower eyelid. My optometrist referred me to a plastic surgeon. He was not too concerned about it and asked if I wanted it removed. I said yes, thinking we’d schedule another appointment. He said okay and went about preparing to do it. I said wait a minute, I have to drive home. He told me that I could drive with one eye. I said okay and settled back in the chair. Next thing I see is the needle coming toward my eye. My entire body clenched, and I said “I’m gonna need a minute.” Thing is, I couldn’t close my eye or look away. But he was right. I could drive home with one eye. I just stayed in the right-hand lane and stayed off the beltway (I lived in the DC area at time). The rub was within a couple of months I had a similar growth on the other eyelid and had to do it all over again. Thankfully, it’s never come back.

yeah, i get the twice-a-year bloodwork for the thyroid. I don’t know why, but getting stuck has just never bothered me. Even at the dentist’s, they’re often like, “Okay, a little pinch here,” and I feel like, “you don’t need to baby talk me. this isn’t that bad.” Of course, then they drill, and because my nerves run funny in my jaw, that’s normally like Little Shop of Horrors.

A couple of years ago, I had a bunch of dental work. I embraced the nitrous. I love my current dentist. During one of my visits, I hated the music they were playing. When I was on my way out, they asked how I everything went, and I commented on the music. They put a note in my chart, and during my next visit, they changed the music when I sat down in the chair.

I just stayed in the right-hand lane and stayed off the beltway (I lived in the DC area at time). The rub was within a couple of months I had a similar growth on the other eyelid and had to do it all over again. Thankfully, it’s never come back.

the best day of my dental life was when I was in the chair, getting a cavity taken care of, and the dentist was like, “yeah, while we’re here, you wanna go ahead and take care of this other small cavity on the same side?” And then, when I went to find out what the butcher’s bill was, there was no additional cost for setup or sedative on the second cavity, which saved me several hundred bucks. The guy’s a champ! His one mistake was really emphasizing dental floss to me. Haven’t had a cavity since I started conscientiously doing that.

I’m not particularly needle-phobic (when I was a child that was a different story), but it drives me absolutely berserk that EVERY news article having to do with the COVID vax invariably includes a stock photo depicting either a close-up of a needle, or a picture of someone getting stuck, or someone with the needle just about to pierce the skin.

I do. They took me right way with an emergency situation when I wasn’t one of their patients. During the year and a half of dental work, I had another emergency, and when I called the office, the dentist answered and said come in right now. I recommend them to everyone!

re: #158 Teddy’s Person

I had the world’s worst dentist as a kid, both in terms of skill and “bedside manner”. So when it came time for me to get my wisdom teeth removed decades later, I was not looking forward to it.

I opted for “conscious sedation” which added about $300 to the bill, but believe me it was a small price to pay. I’d actually been worried that I would be able to fight off or ride out the sedative, and would end up just feeling mildly stoned while my teeth were being busted out. I could not have been more wrong. The doc started an IV (nowhere near as bad as I’d feared — I wasn’t afraid of the needle, but it was the first time I’d ever had a needle that was going to stay put for a while). After a few seconds he said, “OK here comes the good stuff” and injected The Good Stuff into my IV line. About 15 seconds after that, he said, “are you feeling it yet?” I said, “yeah I think so.” I thought so.

About 15 seconds after THAT, I started to became aware of someone slapping the side of my foot. I thought maybe my foot was in the way somehow. It turned out that my 75-minute procedure was over, and they were trying to get me to wake up and leave.

That sounds like my orthodontist when I was a kid. At one appointment he kept telling me to open my mouth wider. I finally told him that I wasn’t a Pez dispenser.

re: #177 darthstar

Modern media and communications have allowed what otherwise in the past would have been hidden in small groups to be made available to everybody.

That includes the professional grifting via scaremongering by bigotry.

I’ve been noticing on Youtube, for example, that any new-ish channel that produces watchable videos (on topical issues, not transient pop-music videos that immediately get millions of views), that subscriber numbers grow, then that growth speeds up, then plateaus.

The plateau is then pretty stable, maybe very slow growth after that.

This I think is evidence, again, that content has a certain reach, a percentage of the population, for which the content has relevance. The rest of the population doesn’t care.

For Fox News, the idea is to keep their audience. They plateaued a while back, and since their audience is older there is die-off too.

So the program to which you are referencing is one of those programs which is attempting to hold on to that audience. It’s hard-core feed-the-chickens type of bigotry. It’s straight out of copying the John Birch Society.

Advertisers in the large may avoid that program, but Fox doesn’t care, since that show exists to simply keep the audience, who will also watch other shows less pungent (and thus acceptable to advertisers.)

I don’t know, but I probably have too much trust in news outlets, when I’ve seen how wrong they can be on topics I understand well.

Over 50 years ago, long before I met him, my late husband had an aunt who was murdered. He said that he lost faith in the reliability of the press as a result of their total inaccuracy in reporting the crime. Not a case where political perspective colored the story — but just carelessness. Of course, it could be that their police sources did not provide accurate information. But he was always skeptical after that experience.

re: #197 Hecuba’s daughter

Every once in a while, otherwise reputable media sources report on a topic that I know very well due to my profession and personal expertise. Invariably, they either get something completely wrong, or oversimplify a key concept to the point that they might as well have got it wrong. It might not be wrong enough to completely change the jist of the story, but it can definitely leave the reader to a lot of extremely incorrect conclusions.

I read these things and then go on to read other stories about topics I know little or nothing about, and hope they’re at least as accurate as the one I knew something about.
