re: #205 Barefoot Grin

Gay, GA had a hard time keeping their town signs from being stolen for awhile. The Gay family was the most prominent and thus gave the town their name, but I think it was a cutesy teenage thing to do in the 1990s.

So the town council meetings had a Gay Agenda.

The only people who for real can’t find a vaccine are stuck in rural and/or poor areas. There are also home bound people who need the vax to come to them. If you live anywhere else, like a lot of anti vax actually do, there’s just no reason to not get the shots. You don’t need insurance or money. Some places even do it on a walk in basis. There are events to get people vaccinated, I mean how much more can we do? Except serve the underserved?

At this point, a billion doses of the various vaccines have been administered worldwide. They’re so safe and so effective, their clinical trials were ended early because it was held to be unethical to extend them in light of the ongoing pandemic they were created to fight. Anyone who refuses to vaccinate by choice - no matter their reason - is guilty of one basic crime: Poor judgment of risk. I have little room for empathy for people who feel that taking horse medicine is less risky than a course of shots that’s less dangerous than some vaccines they’ve already had.

At the end of the text chain where my father-in-law admitted that he had been had by “fake news”, he forwarded a series of articles my staunchly anti-vax and thoroughly brainwashed sister-in-law had sent him. He is predisposed to misinformation of all kinds, not just anti-vax (he is a QAnon true believer), and at that point, I just stopped. He knows Mrs. Fish and I are vaccinated, he knows what we’ve told him and my mother-in-law about the vaccines and about COVID, and he simply chooses confirmation bias.

So that South Carolina lawyer’s wife/son murdered case just got weirder.

A lawyer from a prominent South Carolina legal family who found his wife and son shot to death at their home three months ago and was injured days ago when a bullet grazed his head as he changed a tire said Monday he is resigning from his law firm and entering rehab.

Alex Murdaugh issued a statement Monday saying he regretted decisions he made, but didn’t give any details just two days after reporting someone shot at him after his car had a flat tire along a rural road in Hampton County.

“The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life. I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret. I’m resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that has been exacerbated by these murders. I am immensely sorry to everyone I’ve hurt including my family, friends and colleagues. I ask for prayers as I rehabilitate myself and my relationships,” read Murdaugh’s entire statement.

re: #52 teleskiguy

The dryer in my house is heated by gas. When I last had it replaced, they set up the service appointment for late in the week (by law, in Minnesota, gas appliances must be serviced or installed by a licensed gas operator). The guy calls me the day before the appointment, early in the morning, and is like, “Are you available to take delivery of your new dryer?” I was like, “Yeah, sure… why?” He explained that he had a customer who had to cancel delivery, because they ordered a gas dryer, but didn’t have a gas hookup. I was flabbergasted; it seems like the simplest thing in the world to me to check the connections on the old appliance before ordering a new appliance. I’ve done this for our dishwasher, for the washer and dryer, for the oven and the refrigerator, and I just don’t understand people who order whatever looks good without verifying that it will actually FIT.

One of the reasons that I am so happy to have inadvertently helped someone to decide to vaccinate was that on top of the depressing COVID crap, a friend of ours drowned up at Social Security Bar on the Chetco River in mid July, about one month before his and his wife’s first anniversary. August of last year my wife and I attended their wedding and this August we attended his funeral. Former Marine, buried with honors. What a beautiful ceremony to see at such a sad time.

So if I was a bit amped up about helping someone decide to choose a life-saving shot, that’s why. It just brightened up my life some and it felt good.

Some good news in the Manatee household is that we are getting an Archie!

Archie is the orange guy on the left!

Momma Cat, Shelby, is the sister to our Morty:

Morty, the Router Security Cat

We don’t know if Archie’s ears will fold yet but we don’t care if they don’t, we want a ginger kitty and that’s what counts. Morty’s other roomie, Stewie, and himself are in for a bit of adjustment starting in October.

Rumor is that he stole millions from his firm and one theory is he had the wife and son killed for the insurance money.

Oh (and this is not a rumor) and Dick Harpootlian is his lawyer. Who is Dick Harpootlian, you ask?

Harpootlian was at one time (actually, two different times) the SC Dem Chairman. He has been known for years for his outrageous comments on any number of subjects. He is currently a state senator, and is still known for saying outrageous shit.

Not sure why it’s happening in Firefox but not Chrome. Particularly since I use FF much more and keep thing better up to date there. Another thing to research, I guess.

Last night, my Civ IV installation crapped out. I ended up having to re-install the whole thing. And then felt it necessary to start a new game due to the “Sunk Cost Fallacy”.

Tonight was dedicated to listening to ‘Da Yoopers’. Not exactly the epitome of taste. One friend in the Foreign Service described it as an “Acquired Taste”. She said the same about durian fruit. But it does have its place in the order of things.

A bit more on Murdaugh (SC story)

Rumor is that he stole millions from his firm and one theory is he had the wife and son killed for the insurance money.

Oh (and this is not a rumor) and Dick Harpootlian is his lawyer. Who is Dick Harpootlian, you ask?

Harpootlian was at one time (actually, two different times) the SC Dem Chairman. He has been known for years for his outrageous comments on any number of subjects. He is currently a state senator, and is still known for saying outrageous shit.

Some of his greatest hits:

littlegreenfootballs.com

Slight correction (I was given bad info.) Harpootlian was the lawyer for the drunk-boat-driving-now-murdered-son, NOT the father.

Also—word is that the road where the mysterious drive-by shooting took place would never have been the route Murdaugh would have taken to go to Charleston.

Waterproof and Dry Creek are actual towns. The man died when his car was washed off a road in a flash flood.

She Who Must Be Obeyed’s (SWMBO) musical partner lives about 5 miles south of you off 1431. Pretty country, but it’s either drought or flood out there.

Hell, it’s either drought of flood here in town, but the Highland Lakes protect us, which makes it even more bizarre that the Highland Lakes don’t necessarily protect people living right next to the fucking Highland Lakes. Texas water law is insane.

SWMBO’s graduate thesis at the LBJ School of Public Affairs was titled “Whiskey’s for Drinking, Water’s for Fighting; The 150 Year Fight for Water Rights Access in the Lone Star State”.

Few snakes prettier, and as harmless, as Texas Corals.

Well, if you just leave it the fuck alone.

If you meet one and pick it up it might try to bite you cause its’s scared.

But I can find no records where a Texas Coral reared back and bit someone who was not fucking with it. That said, if you fuck with one and it happens to get it’s juice in you, well, you have fucked the dog and you are probably going to die and even if you don’t, the anti-venom is north of $15,000 a vial and you may need three or four. Because it’s a small Western Hemisphere fucking cobra.

It doesn’t have a hood. It’s too small to be charmed (they max out at about three feet long and a snake can only rear up or strike half it’s length).

I’ve walked up on them a couple of times on the Barton Creek Greenbelt. They are just lovely animals. Leave them alone.

You have excellent points. Massoud is an ethnic Tajik. The Tajiks are reportedly either the majority or the plurality in that province.

When the Taliban went into the Panjshir in their original run, they not only shot up the Tajiks but abducted a lot of the children and sent them to Kandahar. There are few fond memories of the Taliban there.

It is the disdain of “over-eddicated eleites” and Big Government/Big Pharma that makes them turn to what they see as good ol’ Horse Doctor Medicine that they feel they can trust.

A Butler County judge has denied a preliminary injunction request that would have ordered West Chester hospital to treat a COVID-19 patient with Ivermectin, despite a CDC warning against it.

Butler County Judge Michael Oster issued the ruling Monday, saying while it is impossible not to feel sympathetic toward the patient and his family, the court made the decision in accordance with Ohio law.

Here in Wyobraska, getting vaccines has really tightened up. You have to go to a hospital, and only a few days a month are on offer. It’s almost as hard to get a vaccine here as an abortion, and that is by design of our state governor.

A couple counties in the Panhandle do not even have hospitals, meaning miles and miles of travel, and taking the better part of a day (including leaving your job, day care for children, &c).

Testing is no longer available unless you pay for it (there are no private labs here), or a physician orders a test because they suspect Covid-19.

From the weekly regional data (because of the state’s suppression of county reporting), our area is running far ahead of the rest of the state and the nation in the rate of infections.

The High Plains Tropical Update.

The National Hurricane Center has stated that tropical storm watches may be required in the morning for Bermuda as Hurricane Larry continues its approach.

Meanwhile, both the National Hurricane Center and Environment Canada have nudged the trackline of the hurricane further west in the latter part of the period, bringing a then-category two Hurricane Larry over land in Newfoundland.

Environment Canada Hurricane Track Chart

Meanwhile, the tropical wave which pushed off Yucatan has moved farther into the southwest Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center’s analysis has not changed: There is a low chance of a tropical cyclone developing before the storm system reaches the coast of Florida. After traversing the state, development seems likely as the storm moves up the East Coast.

A cold front is expected to move off the East Coast in several days, but is moving slower than expected, which is why Larry’s track has been shifted west. At the same time, that front will also interfere with the tropical wave in the Bay of Campeche, so it is too early to say what it will do as it tracks up the East Coast (parallel the coast? turn out to sea? turn inboard over the coastline?)

An “intellectual conservative” friend of ours posted an article (from the Atlantic I believe) that was presented as a “scientific study” of people’s attitudes about “political correctness”.

I even read through the article before tearing into it:

Point the first, the study gives no objective or consistent definition of “political correctness”, it is whatever the interviewees think it to be, and - what a surprise - most of them had a negative opinion about what they subjectively defined as PC.

Point the second; the cover illustration shows a group of protesters holding an Antifa banner so agenda was quite clear: Antifa are out to force PC down our throats and stifle free speech.

steepest grade I know around here is 18% but the biggest problem for me are not the steep stretches but the long, shallow grades leading up into the side valleys: there is no gear you can find to keep rolling on those unless you are standing up to push the pedal through or your legs are flailing like a hamster.

Months before the Emancipation Proclamation, President Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Emancipation Bill which compensated slave owners up to $300 per freed slave.

Lincoln appointed a board of commissioners to oversee the process of compensation, headed by the North Carolina abolitionist and New York Times reporter Daniel Reaves Goodloe. The board reviewed more than 1,000 slaveholders’ petitions to claim more than 3,000 enslaved people, close
to the entirety of the dwindling population. Most of the petitioners received the full amount allowed. The largest individual payout was$18,000 for 69 slaves.”

Honestly, I don’t think this about hurting Democratic chances in 2022. I honestly think they want to commit to a genocide. It wouldn’t be the first time conservatives in this or other countries did that.

I don’t know if genocide is the right term for what they want. They want to kill everyone who doesn’t think the same as them. The Christian nationalists want to make White American Jesus Christianity the de facto law of the land, and kill off anyone who will not submit to their dogma. It’s a weird pseudo-religious cleansing.

At that, there is a definite directionality in the losses. They will kill a lot of smart people in the general population, but they will kill more of their own fellow-dipshits. After all the innocents are gone, there will still be a measurable increase in the electorate’s intelligence.

Definition: Genocide is the intentional action to destroy a people—usually defined as an ethnic, national, racial, or religious group—in whole or in part.

The United Nations Genocide Convention, which was established in 1948, defines genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such” including the killing of its members, causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group, deliberately imposing living conditions that seek to “bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part”, preventing births, or forcibly transferring children out of the group to another group. Victims have to be deliberately, not randomly, targeted because of their real or perceived membership of one of the four groups outlined in the above definition.

Yup. Genocide fits.

Real triage is not just who is “sicker”, it’s sorting , people into 3 groups:

1. Will die even with all treatment available.
2. Will live without immediate treatment.
3. Will die without immediate treatment.

Only group 3 gets treatment.

I’d argue that all people who refused the vaccines are in groups 1 or 2.

Western Pacific Typhoon Chanthu has blown up like Hurricane Humberto did in Texas, becoming a powerful cyclone from a random low in about twelve hours. It is predicted to pass north of The Philippines and forecast to hit Taiwan as a super typhoon.

Joint Typhoon Warning Center Track Chart for Chanthu

SUMMARY:
INITIAL POSITION: 16.1N 135.7E
INITIAL INTENSITY: 65 KTS
GEOGRAPHIC REFERENCE: 764 NM SOUTHEAST OF KADENA AB
MOVEMENT PAST 6 HOURS: WEST-NORTHWESTWARD AT 10 KTS
SIGNIFICANT WAVE HEIGHT: 20 FEET

SATELLITE ANALYSIS, INITIAL POSITION AND INTENSITY DISCUSSION:
ANIMATED MULTISPECTRAL SATELLITE IMAGERY (MSI) INDICATES THAT TY 19W HAS CONTINUED TO QUICKLY CONSOLIDATE AND HAS STARTED TO RAPIDLY INTENSIFY. ANIMATED VISIBLE IMAGERY SHOWS VORTICAL HOT TOWERS (VHT) DEVELOPING AROUND THE CENTER OF THE SYSTEM AND ROTATING UPSHEAR, INDICATIVE OF THE ONSET OF RAPID INTENSIFICATION (RI).

ADDITIONALLY, A 070350Z AMSR2 COLORIZED 37GHZ MICROWAVE IMAGE SHOWED A VERY SMALL MICROWAVE EYE FEATURE SURROUNDED BY A CYAN RING, PROVIDING ANOTHER INDICATOR OF NEAR-TERM RI. THE AMSR2 IMAGERY PROVIDED HIGH CONFIDENCE TO THE INITIAL POSITION. THE INITIAL INTENSITY IS SET AT 65 KNOTS, IS WELL ABOVE THE MAJORITY OF THE MULTI-AGENCY AND OBJECTIVE CURRENT INTENSITY ESTIMATES.

HOWEVER, GIVEN THE MULTIPLE INDICATORS OF THE ONSET OF RI, THE ANTICIPATED NEAR-TERM DEVELOPMENT OF AN EYE, AND THE COMPACT NATURE OF THE SYSTEM (LEADING TO POTENTIALLY LOW DVORAK ESTIMATES) PROVIDE HIGH CONFIDENCE TO THE INITIAL INTENSITY. WHILE SMALL IN NATURE, THE SYSTEM CONTINUES TO EXHIBIT RADIAL OUTFLOW, AND VERY LOW WIND SHEAR VALUES. THE SYSTEM LIES OVER VERY WARM (30C) AND HIGH OHC WATERS, PROVIDING AMPLE ENERGY TO SUPPORT THE RI.

A lack of empathy also means a lack of foresight. Part of the reason we experience empathy is that it helps us understand that it could happen to us. They can’t experience it happening to others and therefore can’t understand it happening to them. And if they ever did, they would have to admit they are wrong.

It’s been around for awhile; it was a parody of one of those old Chick Tracts, created by artist Howard Hallis, who took Chick’s “The Choice” and gave it a Lovecraftian spin. Of course, Chick Publications threatened to take legal action back in about 2004 or so, so Hallis took it down, but as they say….the Internet is forever.

Who wants to bring kids into a failed society headed by a brutal autocrat?

Russia is facing a dire demographic crisis, and it doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

The country’s dramatic natural population decline in the past six months—more than double the rate from the same time period last year—is so severe that it prompted President Vladimir Putin to come out with a rallying cry in support of larger families last week. “A strong family bringing up two, three, or four children,” he said, “should be the image of a future Russia.”

Realizing this goal will be a Herculean task, for many reasons. No matter how conservative the country is made out to be on state television, the States Statistic Service reports that as of 2020 73 percent of Russian marriages ended in divorce, with 48 percent divorcing before having children. But mainly the new national goal set out by Putin is hard to achieve because a significant number of Russian women—51 percent—simply don’t want to give birth.

Yep. My grandmother had one, the last one I remember seeing. We had it converted in the 1990’s to be able to interface with the touch-tone network. When she died, my mom and sister wanted to purchase the beautiful antique handset from the phone company, but they refused to let us buy out the lease.

His most recent self-beclowning is where he told a woman who asserted her rights “It’s not a uterus, it’s a living being with its own rights,” and then after he beclowned himself in that thread of replies, asserted that anyone saying he was an idiot and/or should not hire him as a lawyer that he would sue them for defamation per se, and that he would “win automatically” because he claimed Florida law does not require proof of actual malice. Methinks somebody knows or suspects he has slave-owners in his ancestry and he just wants to get free money from the government.

Or perhaps he wants to get money through grifting by way of performative transgression. We recently saw how much SMOTI lost when he got de-monetized. It is apparently quite lucrative.

Two things-first Jason Miller has been arrested in Brazil.

Second, did anyone else think “traumatic brain injury” when watching Stacey Campbell? That is her THING, she is known for the headshaking and does it during “prophetic worship”.

OOPS!

Miller was detained to testify to the PF under investigation 4874, which investigates the organization of anti-democratic acts in Brazil. The order came from Minister Alexandre de Moraes , rapporteur of the investigation at the STF .

The businessman is the founder of Gettr, created to bring Trump back to social media, after the former president was banned from major platforms. Gettr has 2 million followers, of which 13.5% are from Brazil.

Miller was in Brazil to participate in the Conservative Political Action Conference (Cpac). In Brasília, he met with President Jair Bolsonaro, Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro and former Chancellor Ernesto Araújo.

I saw a Twitter follow-up that Jason Miller was held for some time, but has been released and is now back in the US.

There’s been serious concern in Brazil that Bolsonaro might use today, Brazil’s Independence Day, to try to stage an insurrection using his supporters - essentially, a repeat of January 6.

And Miller was down there in Brasilia? What an uncanny coincidence. *snerk*

re: #269 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

Hard to tell what’s going on with the Miller detention. He had participated in the big fascist conclave with Bolsonaro and his platform is quite popular among Brazilian RWNJs. I don’t think this is part of some kind of putsch by anti-Bolsonaro forces, since Moraes the rapporteur is a Bolso loyalist, though not well known as such. Bolsonaro may be ready to cut loose from Trumpism and the sinking ship. Maybe he has talked to Cheney.

Well, doing so would result in actively reducing the crime rate in the United States, since every time he opens his mouth is basically a crime, so there might be something to that theory.

They both deliver immunity, but the people infected are also going to need the booster shots that their psychological condition makes impossible for them.

I did that as well, the same day I got the vaccination. (When I get a booster, the photo will be similarly updated.) The hard copy is in my fireproof safe, along with my other essential identity documents (passports for myself and Mrs. Fish; marriage certificate; original birth certificates for all 4 family members; Social Security cards for all 4 family members)

They’re not supported by the phone network anymore, so the only place you’d see one is somewhere with their own ancient phone system that interfaces with the modern network.

All it takes to convert rotary pulses to DTMF is an integrated circuit.

Companies also make for hobbyists kits to take a rotary telephone and put that chip inside your telephone so it sends out DTMF (primarily for VOIP service).
