Biden should wear some glasses with a mustache and tell reporters “This is the only version of Marxism that Republicans understand. They think governing is a joke.”
This was my first car…the base model 1970 1/2 AMC Gremlin.
No rear seat, No power steering, No power brakes, 3 speed Borg-Warner manual transmission with the first gear unsynchronized. No radio, Windshield Washers ran off the engine vacuum and there was a pump for the window fluid.
But it had a 25 gallon tank and I could really fill it up for…$5.95.

SRSLY.
Much as I love Aggressive Joe as President (which he manages to do without it looking like mere pissy ego, unlike his predecessor), I REALLY wish he would step up in front of the press and call out the GOP gibberings about “communism” for the - umm, malarkey that they are.
Something along the lines of: “When some American politicians start babbling about “Marxism” or “Communism”, it’s a sure sign they’ve lost any argument they might have made. And this nonsense is where too many Republican arguments start”

Such odd weather.
I realize most of you live in places where rain is normal.
But around these parts rain only shows up in winter as part of huge winter storms coming off the Pacific, or, in late summer or fall because tropical storm remnants get too far north and enter the Gulf of California/Arizona.
Currently we have plenty of rain and lightening. It’s not a remnant of a tropical storm. Like a couple of weeks ago when we got a torrent, these storms are just due to a small low pressure system that gets stuck all by itself to our south.
Monsoonal rain is great - warm rain is so much better than cold rain.
It’s just weird in these parts.
Our water year starts on Oct 1 because usually there is no summer rain.
Calendar year rain total around these parts is so far about 6.6”, and a little over an inch of that came just two weeks ago. So far we’ve had roughly the same amount of late summer/early fall rain that we did in Spring.
We need rain so let it pour (the loquats are happy.)
However none of this rain will help with the Colorado river water crisis.

While I like the rain and feel (67F and 85%RH is very comfortable), reminds me of Japan, there was so much lightening that I worry about wild fires starting.
The moisture is barely reaching central California and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, so probably not much help against the large wildfires up there.

Holy shit, that is badass. Totally agree we need more.
Some good points about post-infection immunity from covid vs vaccine (don’t use natural immunity since the immune system is responding to antigens in both cases).
there are a number of issues with post-infection immunity that make vaccination, even after recovery from COVID-19, desirable, including that:
More than a third of COVID-19 infections result in zero protective antibodies
“Natural immunity” fades faster than vaccine immunity, particularly after mild infection
“Natural immunity alone” is only half as effective as natural immunity plus vaccination
The reason I posted is because the idiots at Project Veritas released a video of various people who work for vaccine manufacturers in a disinformation campaign against vaccines. The gullible knuckleheads are going to start repeating the bullshit.

Thunderstorms here. Isolated cells visible from Mt Wilson
Detained asylum-seekers and migrants and their advocates won a huge court victory against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott last week when a federal judge on Tuesday ordered the release of hundreds of men who had been jailed without any charges at all under his “legally dubious” Operation Lone Star scheme. That should’ve included asylum-seekers Ivan Nava and David Muñoz. While the two had been facing trespassing charges, they were dismissed when attorneys challenged their unlawful arrests. But advocates said Friday that the jail refused to release the two men even after their charges were dropped and an immigration detainer had expired. “By Friday afternoon, an attorney for the men was chasing a bus to Val Verde County, about three hours from the prison,” NBC News reported. “By the time she reached the county, she learned they had been turned over to Customs and Border Protection.”
NBC News reported that the two men “should have been released from the Dolph Briscoe Unit state prison in Dilley by Thursday afternoon when a federal immigration detainer, good for 48 hours, expired at 1:47 p.m., attorneys said.” Grassroots Leadership said that Just Futures Law had on Thursday written to Dolph Briscoe Unit’s warden about the expiration. But “[w]hen advocates inquired in person about the release of Mr. Nava and Mr. Muñoz, they were told the men would not be released despite the illegal nature of their further detention.”

Looking at the local weather data: this afternoon before the rain local air pressure was down to 1008.8mb . Just a little while ago the barometer is around 1015.1mb. A big change for us. That little cut-off low is losing the battle against the persistent high pressure ridge over the desert.
Oddly the radar sites are showing widespread rain in western San Diego county but here there is none now.
The old NWS radar web pages were clunky and dated but I could get useful information from them.
Ever since the NWS went with its new radar web page it has been pretty much useless.
Sure, it’s fancier as a webpage, but often unresponsive and just confuses the user. Poorly laid out menus are in no less than four different locations. That is, when the web page responds.

Sure. The problem is that rabies vaccines aren’t 100% effective, as we’ve been discussing with other vaccines, and the consequences of being bitten by one of “those” dogs are deadly.

Concerns grow as coyotes attack pets in Pleasant Hill
PLEASANT HILL, Calif. (KRON) - There are growing concerns over coyotes in the East Bay — Disturbing videos from the last few weeks have captured attacks on pets.
These images serving as a warning to people who might leave their animals outside.
Some of the residents in Pleasant Hill said they’ve become a little worried about just how active and comfortable the coyotes have gotten in their neighborhoods.
A few days ago, an attack on a cat was caught on camera and it’s really upset people in the area. A pair of coyotes are caught on camera attacking a black cat.
The simple way to test a neighborhood dog for rabies is to send its head to a state lab.
I used to live on a ranch in Sedona, AZ with a couple of dogs. I did not mind the romantic howl of coyotes in the distance but once in a while they sounded like they were all snarling and ripping some creature apart.
That was when I called my dogs inside overnight.
re: #66 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
Coyotes are fairly rare here, but every once in a while a feral cat gets disassembled. Neighborhood birds don’t seem to mind.

Apparently FacePalm wasn’t the only recent tech fail. A Chinese drone show had some issues recently:
This Is What Happens When a Drone Light Show Fails
During a performance staged above a mall in the central city of Zhengzhou on Friday, drones began falling from the sky in the middle of the show, hitting buildings and vehicles on the ground.
And speaking of falling drones:
Police drones are falling from the sky when it rains, report finds
Drones used by UK police forces are falling out of the sky when it rains, a report by the country’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch has found.
Last year, 16 “Matrice 200” series drones produced by Chinese manufacturer DJI crashed due to “technical failures,” the report, released Thursday, found.
It notes that in some instances the drones were being used by UK police forces and emergency services at the time of the crashes.

I remember my polio shot. My parents told me they were taking me to kindergarten. I was so excited! We drove to the school and went into a big room with a bunch of other parents and children. We got in line. Then instead of going into the kindergarten room (I caught a glimpse of the room. The door was closed but I saw a bunch of toys through the glass) I got a needle stick! I cried a little and then I got a badge and a lollipop.

At one point, my dad got his hands on a used Ford Crown Vic police interceptor. It was speed governed to 129 mph. It floated in the straightaways, but handled like crap as every corner would see it try to continue going straight. It was a land boat.
I so much preferred mom’s Mazda 626. It was a 1989 and while the transmission sucked something fierce (it couldn’t handle the hp the engine put out), it was nimble, fun to drive, and smooth. I miss that car a bunch.

Mrs. Fish once had a car that was built on the Panther platform. Basically, the Ford Crown Vic, the Mercury Grand Marquis, and the Lincoln Town Car were all built on the same frame, with the same block and the same transmission; the differences were in suspension, final drive, heads, fuel/air systems and tuning, and the grade of the interior and exterior fittings. We had the Town Car, which was governed to 111 mph (don’t ask me how I know) and had rear air suspension and quality leather furnishings. It was a rock solid reliable car for years, and a great ride down to fish country and back.
As for my first car, it was a bog-standard 1991 Chevrolet Silverado half-ton pickup truck. My dad had inherited my mom’s dad’s early 1980’s Ford F150 when he died in 1990; he drove that truck to one of my cousin’s weddings. The truck made it there, but it never made it home. Hours late, my mom stared worriedly out our front door waiting for him, until he rocks up in this brand-new gray and red two-tone beast with the trademark bowtie on the front. We ran that truck pretty hard, hauling over 10,000 lbs on a gooseneck trailer several times, but it never gave us a complaint. That truck died a hero’s death with myself and my college roommate in it in the summer of 2005.

Hmmm. Mysterious drop in vaccine and election disinformation yesterday. What could it have been?///
On this day in 1898, doctors in Laredo began noticing an outbreak of smallpox among the city’s children. The first death occurred in late October, and by January 1899 physicians reported more than 100 cases. Texas health officer W. T. Blunt advocated strict measures to control the epidemic, including house-to-house vaccination and fumigation and the establishment of a field hospital to function as a quarantined area. When some Laredo residents resisted the vaccinations, Blunt requested that the Texas Rangers assist with the health care measures. Friction between some of the residents and the rangers culminated in a gunbattle and ensuing riot in March 1899, and the Tenth United States Cavalry was called in to help maintain the peace. By May the quarantine was lifted.
Note: It was Republican President William McKinley who ordered the 10th Cavalry to restore order. The 10th was a Buffalo Soldier (all black) unit that had just returned from Cuba and the Spanish American War. They had suffered high losses in the yellow fever epidemic there and were probably in no mood to put up with denialists and plague rats.

Geez, my first car…
A 1959 Volkswagen Beetle, heavily modified. As in someone flared the fenders and put the wheels and tires from an Olds station wagon on it. It had one of those tiny (10” maybe?) ‘racing’ steering wheels on it, the one with the foam cover. It looked ridiculous, but I loved that car.
I went to take my driving test with it and the PA State Trooper wouldn’t even let me on the test course with it. I had to come back with my older sister’s Toyota to take my driving test.

We have another winner of the Ted Cruz Award for political lapdogs. This one “parted amicably” with the man who tried to get him lynched by a MAGAT mob.
Donald Trump is no longer on the annual list of America’s 400 wealthiest people — mainly due to the languishing commercial real estate industry, Forbes reports.“If Trump is looking for someone to blame, he can start with himself. Five years ago, he had a golden opportunity to diversify his fortune. Fresh off the 2016 election, federal ethics officials were pushing Trump to divest his real estate assets. That would have allowed him to reinvest the proceeds into broad-based index funds and assume office free of conflicts of interest.”

Questions are already swirling about the projected price point for Merck’s experimental #Covid drug. The contract with the USG puts its cost at $712 per treatment course; but production costs are only $20, @pharmalot reports.
And what are the development costs and the costs of clinical trials? Yes — pharmaceutical firm overcharge for their products, but there are other costs associated with the development of new medications, including costs of potential new treatments that failed.

That excuse doesn’t work for epipens.
Epinephrine, and the way to put it into injectable solution, was discovered more than 100 years ago. It’s way the hell out of patent. The injector was created under govt contract, originally for the purpose of soldiers carrying atropine (nerve gas antidote) in their pockets when they went into battle. When we stopped doing large scale ground invasions, the government stopped buying so many, and the company went under.
A Pfizer subsidiary bought the injector patent, stuck epinephrine into the pens, and Joe Manchin’s daughter led the marketing effort that’s the reason every school, hotel, restaurant, airplane, train, etc now stocks them in their first aid kits. And has to replace them when they expire. They raised the price by 10x, and young Manchinette has an 8-figure salary.

Ugh. I had a close call with the local Barney Fife this morning. I idly mentioned to Mrs. Fish that because I’m white and male, he decided against actually stopping to hold me up (he was following me through town in his car while I was on my morning walk). I actually had my phone in hand during the latter half of my walk because his driving was suspicious enough that I worried he would accost me on my way home. It’s stupid that we have to be nervous around the people who are supposed to be protecting us, but that’s where the police are these days.

Inside the Right’s Plan to Rebrand Sex Ed as ‘Child Porn’
As the mayor of Hudson, Ohio, Craig Shubert doesn’t have the power to prosecute anybody. But that didn’t stop him from delivering a hefty ultimatum to school board members at a Sept. 13 meeting: either they could resign en masse, or they could all face child pornography charges.
Despite what Shubert claimed, Hudson’s school board hasn’t been distributing child pornography. Instead, he was threatening to prosecute them over 642 Things to Write About, a book of writing prompts distributed to some Hudson high school students in a college-level course that required a parental permission slip. Prompts like “Write a sex scene you wouldn’t show your mom,” according to Shubert, merited the child porn charges.
“It has come to my attention that your educators are distributing essentially what is child pornography in the classroom,” Shubert said, to applause from the meeting’s audience. “I’ve spoken to a judge this evening. She’s already confirmed that. So I’m going to give you a simple choice. You either choose to resign from this Board of Education or you will be charged.”
No school board members resigned. Still, video of his remarks went viral on right-wing social media after being promoted by various conservative media figures like Candace Owens, and prompted threats to the school board members.
Xtians will never stop pushing their shit.
re: #145 JOE 🥓
My sex ed class included watching videos of three women giving birth, including a woman that gave a home birth to a 13lb kid, so it definitely wasn’t child porn.

This dog has barked at me before and come up to me, but this is the first time it ever bit me (or even tried to)
If you’re not inclined to sue and want to maintain relations with your neighbor - toss a cheese ball in the dog’s direction from time to time - while you stand still & speak to it in a normal voice. In the beginning it would help the animal if you don’t stare directly at the dog
If your neighbor isn’t a total meatball, they will first control the dog while you initiate and continue the process. The dog’s tail will tell the tale of how it is responding.
After doing this several times, the dog will cease to associate you as a threat.
When it comes to dogs, the power of a cheese ball is an amazing thing.
re: #161 BeenHereAwhile
It’s also possible that the dog was sleeping under the car (in the shade) and you startled it. There is a reason for the old adage “let sleeping dogs lie”.
You may want to make some noise when approaching the area where you were bitten.
