re: #397 Belafon

What I think would have happened is the cops would have showed up, asked about the parents, found out that they left him at school, and would have decided it’s not worth the effort.

maybe.
and you do it anyway
we are heightened and sensitized to this kind of violence
we’re past deciding if it’s just up to but not over the line
he was shopping for ammo. he drew pictures. what sign were they waiting for?

using the system (calling the police) is not passing the buck
you get their opinion
you ask ‘do you want our next call to be…” what it turned out to be

I’m wondering if an employee was slipping them into the wall if there was a gap by a towel dispenser or something, either planning to come back and get them one day, or just to screw their evil employer.

Pretty safe bet when they describe everyone to the left of Ayn Rand as a “communist.”

Law of unintended consequences. What these goober-terrorists are doing is suggesting to young people that communism may not be a bad thing. “If these crazy fascists hate it so much, it must have something going for it.”

When Republicans refuse to restrict the rights of women, minorities, or LGBTQ+, they get primaried by someone more extreme.

When Democrats fail to get everything passed, voters just stay home.

The system is biased in favor of conservatives, but Democrats turning out can overcome it.

I bought two biggish chewy treats for my dogs this morning.
Odysseus consumed his rapidly, as is the norm.
Shelby is entering hour two of chewing and looks to have more than an hour or two remaining.
Ody is starting to get jealous and whining

Ody has managed to gain control of the remaining treat.
Which is also quite typical.

Now I’ll grab the leashes and drain the dogs, we’ll see how ownership goes from there

It certainly won’t help grow the cult when they tell people that they were raised by communists in a communist country. Only the crankiest maladjusted cranks are attracted to that. This shit is how we got a crank Republican party.

Laying people off during the holidays is bad…this is so much worse.

Vishal Garg, CEO of mortgage lender startup better.com, told 900 employees he was laying them off in a brutal and bizarre one-way video chat announcement on Thursday.

“This is the second time in my career I’m doing this and I do not want to do this, the last time I did it, I cried, this time I hope to be stronger,” Garg says early in the video, before noting that he is laying off “about” 15 percent of the company’s workforce just before the holidays. More than a minute into the call, Garg says “If you’re on this call, you are part of the unlucky group that is being laid off. Your employment here is terminated effective immediately.”

“Underscoring growing concerns about Omicron, scientists in South Africa said on Friday that the newest coronavirus variant appears to spread more than twice as quickly as Delta, until now the most contagious version of the virus,” the New York Times reports.

“Omicron’s rapid spread results from a combination of contagiousness and an ability to dodge the body’s immune defenses, the researchers said, but the contribution of each factor is not yet certain.”

That’s going to haunt them if they don’t kill themselves.

That would be worse. They should at least be there for their son, even if their actions led to this tragedy. They created him; they should not be abandoning him now. If they have any decency, maybe this will lead them to rethink their life choices. Of course, given the mother is a MAGAt, that’s not likely but people sometimes do repent.

I watched his press conference yesterday and he actually made sense. Said the gun laws are lax and need to be tougher, that law enforcement is frustrated with people who violate gun laws getting light sentences and getting done with one charge and end up charged again because of lack of consequences. He said if the laws were tougher these crimes would not be so common. Not sure what his backpedaling is about.

I’m just curious about why whoever it was bothered stuffing checks into the wall. The person who wrote the check would realize it had never been cashed, and it would look suspicious if someone showed up at a bank trying to cash a bunch of old checks. It’s odd.

there’s a grifter movie in which an evangelist charlatan doesn’t bother to cash checks for 5 bucks because it’s too much hassle. so they just get bagged and stuffed somewhere. The same might be true of one and five dollar bills. Maybe the grift is so large that it just wasn’t worth having someone actually count through the small bills.

We also read it in the 9th grade (in 1964). We had a super-religious kid in our class who was sophisticated enough to recognize it as an attack on his superstition and complain about it. I can’t remember which mob he belonged to, but they also refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance (which Repugs of course treat as a recent development by Demo-commies). Incidentally, Miles Hyman, whose graphic novel adaptation of “The Lottery” was banned, is the grandson of the story’s author, Shirley Jackson.

I’m thinking there’s a ‘ripped from the headlines’ episode coming… (they already did a 1/6 episode)

More like the other way round: the Crumbleys’ flight seems more like it was inspired by some hackneyed TV cop-drama they’ve watched too much of.
Though hopefully they aren’t going to be counting on it ending in the typical TV cop-drama fashion, I.e. a loud shootout……

I wonder if the Leanderists will ban Moby Dick because the villainous whale is white? They even represent his badness as inherent in his nature; white=scary, gotta be CRT. Never mind that Captain Ahab is a drooling maniac in a position of power: They don’t have a problem with that.

The story arc in Moby Dick reads quite differently if you’re, say, a whale.

I really like Boehlert, and I haven’t read the opinion piece by Bullock, but I agree with the sentiment in Bullock’s tweet instead of what I think was a near miss by Eric. It’s not enough to fix the roads and build Broadband in rural America. There has to be a huge PR campaign around it that would include, yes, discussions in diners about why it’s the Democrats who get shit done.

I haven’t read the article, but what kind of talking down do we do?

re: #206 Barefoot Grin

Governments always propagandize their own people, but I hope the goal of the US government will be to do as little as that as possible.

And this gets us to the “rural” problem. No matter what program Biden and company may wish to bestow upon red-rural-America, there is no going back on the culture wars.

This is where I think our society has reached: we’re just going to have to wait until the Reaganism Republicans all die off.

In an ideal world people would all politely debate each other and be willing to follow the facts on whatever issue.

But we don’t live in an ideal world.

Still, I do think the Democrats have to be quite clear in their publicity.

It needs to be driven home daily that life in the 21st century requires 21st century solutions, not 18th century practices.

For a starters, I think Biden really needs to do a twice weakly TV/radio show. I’ve written this before, and I’ll repeat it again. Biden needs to be more visible and audible.

I don’t want to argue about that part, but rather if the BBB passes I think it will be very important—knowing that they think we talk down to them—to have a full-court press rather than constantly conceding rural America to the GOP. That’s where SCOTUS appointments dwell.

I guess it was dumb to post based on a tweet from an opinion I haven’t even read. But I’ll own it. I stand by my other points. My extended family were reliable Dems in my dad’s generation (farmers in Illinois), but the next generations became increasingly attracted to local Republicans who then took that support to presidential elections. Their kids (in their 20s and young 30s) became Trumpists. The message was lost in there somewhere.

Yeah, but what neither guy seems to want to face (and what SO many politicians and political commentators tiptoe around), is that the real “appeal” to so (too) many of those “rural” voters is that Republicans make their main political pitch by pandering to peoples’ prejudices and painting their opponents as “enemies” implacably hostile to them and their entire “culture”. So pointing out that Democrats “get shit done” - however true it is, and however much gets done, isn’t going to garner many votes when the other side’s appeal is mostly to simply paint the Ds as communist atheist baby-killer race-traitors….

Sounds like the switch occurred when Democrats started openly supporting minority rights, like what happened here in Texas.

I’ve made the same points in my head to Anymouse’s posts, but the difference is that IF BBB passes, there will be something to show—you can’t let that go to waste, and you can’t get the message across entirely with media ads. There has to be groundwork. That’s all.

I’m not saying it won’t be the hardest sell they’ve faced, but why not try. Say you get just a fraction of white voters to change their minds on purely economic grounds—it would be worth it.

Agree. And we can send Biden, Harris, Pelosi, Pete, AOC, and Omar to talk about it. :)

Maybe Bullock can do it in Montana with some help from Biden. But i am curious what you think rural voters might want that doesn’t involve screwing minorities, women’s rights, or gay rights.

re: #205 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of Big Bird, Bert, and Ernie

We also read it in the 9th grade (in 1964). We had a super-religious kid in our class who was sophisticated enough to recognize it as an attack on his superstition and complain about it. I can’t remember which mob he belonged to, but they also refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance (which Repugs of course treat as a recent development by Demo-commies). Incidentally, Miles Hyman, whose graphic novel adaptation of “The Lottery” was banned, is the grandson of the story’s author, Shirley Jackson.

He would have been Amish, and yes, a story about people stoning a sacrificial victim in order to bring in a good harvest, because that’s the way it’s done, would probably have had the Amish squeaking around uncomfortably in their desks.

Pretty sure we read it in sixth grade. (I know we read it, not 100% sure what year. We read Jonathan Swift’s “Modest Proposal” around then too. Everyone recognized that it was satire.)
