The only thing the GOP can hope to do at this point is to blow up enough fog and toss out enough red herrings so it is not possible to definitively determine exactly who is responsible, there is no hiding or denying what happened.

As far as I’m concerned the Republican Party should be replaced. Insurrectionists and people (elected or not) that chose Trump over the law should be banned from running for any office.
There is a place for a spectrum of views here, a battle of wills over legit policy debate. The economy, the environment, the military, you name it. Dare I say it? Conservatives deserve an honest home. Without that, we don’t get an honest debate. Without that, we don’t get honest decisions.

Cyber Ninjas and their lawyer(s) are in some serious trouble with the court in Arizona.
How it started:
Court hearing for Cyber Ninjas this morning and Doug Logan has two out of state lawyers repping him since his AZ lawyer wants off the case because he says he hasn’t been paid. New lawyers are Jonathan Miller of Georgia and Mike Smith of Michigan.

Regarding the broadcast news cretins, Aaron Sorkin (through Will McAvoy ) said it on The Newsroom:
In the infancy of mass communications, the Columbus and Magellan of broadcast journalism, William Paley and David Sarnoff, went down to Washington to cut a deal with Congress. Congress would allow the fledgling networks free use of taxpayer-owned airwaves in exchange for one public service. That public service would be one hour of air time set aside every night for informational broadcasting, or what we now call the evening news. Congress, unable to anticipate the enormous capacity television would have to deliver consumers to advertisers, failed to include in its deal the one requirement that would have changed our national discourse immeasurably for the better. Congress forgot to add that under no circumstances could there be paid advertising during informational broadcasting. They forgot to say that taxpayers will give you the airwaves for free and for 23 hours a day you should make a profit, but for one hour a night you work for us. And now those network newscasts, anchored through history by honest-to-God newsmen with names like Murrow and Reasoner and Huntley and Brinkley and Buckley and Cronkite and Rather and Russert— Now they have to compete with the likes of me. A cable anchor who’s in the exact same business as the producers of Jersey Shore.

The political need to try and convey that we can keep schools open will run into the indisputable fact that there aren’t teachers/staff in the building due to covid, and/or students are out sick en masse due to covid.
Some schools are going remote for a couple of weeks, but there’s no intention to go remote for the school year. NYC schools will probably go remote individually, rather than as an entire system. Some schools in the DOE are seeing massive absences while others are doing far better. There are some schools that have under 20% attending, but the overall attendance is around 71%.

The coup is still underway. If I am “paranoid” then let me be a prepared paranoid freak.
By 2025, American democracy could collapse, causing extreme domestic political instability, including widespread civil violence. By 2030, if not sooner, the country could be governed by a right-wing dictatorship. We mustn’t dismiss these possibilities just because they seem ludicrous or too horrible to imagine. In 2014, the suggestion that Donald Trump would become president would also have struck nearly everyone as absurd. But today we live in a world where the absurd regularly becomes real and the horrible commonplace.
Leading American academics are now actively addressing the prospect of a fatal weakening of U.S. democracy.
This past November, more than 150 professors of politics, government, political economy and international relations appealed to Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, which would protect the integrity of US elections but is now stalled in the Senate. This is a moment of “great peril and risk,” they wrote. “Time is ticking away, and midnight is approaching.”

Not a one of these GOPers would sign on to criminal justice reform. These are the same people who openly decry the end of cash bail and other steps that are supposed to make prison safer. Bail is supposed to be there to enforce attendance in court proceedings, not as an excuse to keep incarcerated indefinitely until trial as is all too often the case.
Prison/jail conditions are awful whether they’re in federal or state/local control. We need to do better - and that also has to do with things like 3-strikes and low level drug use becoming life in prison for drug offenses. Diversions to treatment instead of prison for those with mental health issues or addictions is frowned upon, especially with the “law and order” and prison industrial complex types.

Here’s the thing. And this is pretty critical to everyone. I personally agree. I think this is a bad thing to do, but this is what we are about to be facing.
If you consider the supply chain from top to bottom, solely around food and needed supplies (medicine, and such). If we do not have people, those often benighted Essential Workers (who are more often than not shit on), to make food/drugs, package them, prepare them for shipment, logistics to move them around, drivers to deliver them, people to stock stuff on shelves, and the ability to sell that stuff to other people, we are going to starve, die from not having drugs and the economy in total will collapse into a great big black hole.
I honestly do not know what they right thing to do is, but this isn’t just about kids and schools, this is so much bigger and when you think about all the varying tentacles of everything that is our supply chain, I think this is going to test us in ways we have never been tested before. And I am glad there are much smarter people than me considering all of this. Because it’s huge.

This is a lonnnng thread about a hearing today where grifting lawyer John Wilenchik wants off the Cyber Ninjas case because he’s not being paid. The current issue is that the Arizona Republic wants documentation and Cyber Ninjas is refusing to turn it over, in part because Cyber Ninjas basically doesn’t exist anymore. If you read the entire thread, you’ll find that the judge has found the Cyber Ninjas in contempt and a $50,000 day fine starts tomorrow. (The Arizona Republic only wanted $1000/day.)

There’s a lot of willful stupidity though too. Remember that you can be well-educated and reasonably intelligent in certain ways and still be stock stupid in the ways that matter, and that seems to be not only well represented but well cultivated in our current electorate. It’s like that one vid sending up anti-vaxxers way back when the only thing they were up in arms about was the bogus autism rap. A woman accosting a doctor for the studies about vaccines effects on autism, the doctor saying ‘well, here’s the 100s of studies that show it has no effect, and the 1 non-peer reviewed study saying it might’, and the woman scoffs, grabbed the 1 non-peer reviewed study, and sneered ‘I knew it’ and walked off.
That’s what we’re facing. A country full of folks who will reach and scratch and claw for the comfortable lie through broken glass when the truth is at arm’s reach on a platter for them.

“Paranoid fantasies” 2015 - Trump will win the Presidency, pardon outright criminals and toadies, openly threaten and intimidate press members, harass and suggest violence against political opponents and foreign countries, and lead a coup to negate an election and overthrow democracy in the USA.
Conventional wisdom 2015- Trump may win, but he will turn out to be a moderate who will soon assume traditional limits and behaviors consistent with previous administrations. Even if Trump does try and test limits, Republican leaders, Justices, and Congress will keep him reigned in. …Trump will soon be “Presidential.”
The country experienced a catastrophic failure of imagination about how far dedicated terrorists would go and on 9/11, 3000 people paid the price with their lives.
I had a catastrophic failure of imagination in 2016 when I largely dismissed the mathematical quirk in electoral vote apportionment which have Trump an electoral victory while Hillary won the popular vote count.
In the lead-up to January 6th, 2021, I had another catastrophic failure of imagination when I dismissed the trolling of Trumpist “friends of friends” on Facebook telling us Biden supporting Democrats to “Just wait until January 6th. You’ll be singing a different tune then when we Real American patriots march on Washington to reinstall Trump as the rightful victor” as just big talk.
So, no, I’m not going to dismiss FP’s fears as paranoid fantasy. The Republicans have descended into mass insanity. In that circumstance, it’s possible that those of us who want to cling to the flotation device of a sense of lasting normality are just not being paranoid enough.
re: #101 No Malarkey!
I remember when leftists thought VP Cheney would engineer a coup to keep power. Now his daughter is one of a handful of Republicans in office who oppose one.
The left howling about these paranoid fantasies at the top of their lungs through the entire Bush Administration is likely the crying wolf that allowed people to ignore when this kind of thing was actually happening.
Consider, though, that it’s still a minority of Americans. They have way too much power, and that’s because our constitution is messed up like that, but they were a minority of votes in 2016 and in 2020.
We have a lot of work cut out for us, but we do have the majority of Americans on our side. And it’ll be a lot easier to convince them, and some of the Republicans that were actually appalled at January 6th, to vote if we’re working towards defeating Republicans rather than being resigned to the idea that they’re going to win.

How do we handle the places that are still supporting Trump:
It’s become doctrine for many right-thinking people that people shouldn’t “amplify” what Trump is saying. That only does his work for him, we’re told. This is the logic that got him booted off social media. But if what Benjy says is right, this state of affairs, which has clearly driven Trump to distraction, has also proved almost the best of all possible worlds for him. Trump’s supporters hear his message loud and clear: through NewsMax, OANN, talk radio, Facebook and to a significant degree on Fox News. But for the rest of the political world it’s muffled. So the horror and craziness of Trumpism recedes from public consciousness while people are focused on the day to day imperfection of the Biden presidency.
This hasn’t made Trump any weaker. His hold over the institutional and electoral GOP has only intensified since leaving office. The very small number of elected officials who refused to support the Big Lie have mostly been drummed out of the party. Trump’s Big Lie propaganda has become unassailable in heavily state-legislative-gerrymandered states where it will matter most. In short, the “don’t amplify” doctrine has allowed Trump to speak freely to his supporters and intensify his hold over the GOP, while keeping the incendiary messages that mobilize a majority of the country against him largely off mainstream airwaves.
All of the upside and none of the down.

How do we handle the places that are still supporting Trump:
The problem with the alternative to ‘don’t amplify’ is that America doesn’t know how to deal with white terrorists, traitors, or bad actors. I understand Josh’s point that ‘don’t amplify’ leads to just pretending that it doesn’t exist, and doesn’t diminish its strength. But putting it in the spotlight and shining a light on it doesn’t help either, because America knows only two responses to white conservative malfeasance - pretend it doesn’t exist, or make excuses for it. That’s it. The correct response - destroy it and punish it - is not something this country can do, because the central tenet of American culture is that white people cannot face consequences for their bad actions.

I thought that they were doing it with Cowpox scrapings at the time rather than actual smallpox, because it was similar enough to give a decent smallpox immunity?
Still looking, but this is some interesting information about Washington’s orders:
George Washington’s military genius is undisputed. Yet American independence must be partially attributed to a strategy for which history has given the infamous general little credit: his controversial medical actions. Traditionally, the Battle of Saratoga is credited with tipping the revolutionary scales. Yet the health of the Continental regulars involved in battle was a product of the ambitious initiative Washington began earlier that year at Morristown, close on the heels of the victorious Battle of Princeton. Among the Continental regulars in the American Revolution, 90 percent of deaths were caused by disease, and Variola the small pox virus was the most vicious of them all. (Gabriel and Metz 1992, 107)
On the 6th of January 1777, George Washington wrote to Dr. William Shippen Jr., ordering him to inoculate all of the forces that came through Philadelphia. He explained that: “Necessity not only authorizes but seems to require the measure, for should the disorder infect the Army … we should have more to dread from it, than from the Sword of the Enemy.” The urgency was real. Troops were scarce and encampments had turned into nomadic hospitals of festering disease, deterring further recruitment. Both Benedict Arnold and Benjamin Franklin, after surveying the havoc wreaked by Variola in the Canadian campaign, expressed fears that the virus would be the army’s ultimate downfall. (Fenn 2001, 69)
At the time, the practice of infecting the individual with a less-deadly form of the disease was widespread throughout Europe. Most British troops were immune to Variola, giving them an enormous advantage against the vulnerable colonists. (Fenn 2001, 131) Conversely, the history of inoculation in America (beginning with the efforts of the Reverend Cotton Mather in 1720) was pocked by the fear of the contamination potential of the process. Such fears led the Continental Congress to issue a proclamation in 1776 prohibiting Surgeons of the Army to inoculate.
Washington suspected the only available recourse was inoculation, yet contagion risks aside, he knew that a mass inoculation put the entire army in a precarious position should the British hear of his plans. Moreover, Historians estimate that less than a quarter of the Continental Army had ever had the virus; inoculating the remaining three quarters and every new recruit must have seemed daunting. Yet the high prevalence of disease among the army regulars was a significant deterrent to desperately needed recruits, and a dramatic reform was needed to allay their fears.
Weighing the risks, on February 5th of 1777, Washington finally committed to the unpopular policy of mass inoculation by writing to inform Congress of his plan. Throughout February, Washington, with no precedent for the operation he was about to undertake, covertly communicated to his commanding officers orders to oversee mass inoculations of their troops in the model of Morristown and Philadelphia (Dr. Shippen’s Hospital). At least eleven hospitals had been constructed by the year’s end.
Variola raged throughout the war, devastating the Native American population and slaves who had chosen to fight for the British in exchange for freedom. Yet the isolated infections that sprung up among Continental regulars during the southern campaign failed to incapacitate a single regiment. With few surgeons, fewer medical supplies, and no experience, Washington conducted the first mass inoculation of an army at the height of a war that immeasurably transformed the international system. Defeating the British was impressive, but simultaneously taking on Variola was a risky stroke of genius.

Washington, who had suffered from smallpox as a teenager, strongly believed in the effectiveness of inoculation and persuaded his wife to undergo the procedure in 1776 even as he forbade his troops from being inoculated, National Geographic reported.
Back then, the inoculation process was called variolation, named after the virus that causes smallpox — the variola virus.
It involved exposing people to the virus by scratching material from smallpox sores into their arms or having them inhale it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Variolation was eventually replaced by vaccination after an English doctor named Edward Jenner noticed in 1796 that milkmaids who had gotten cowpox were immune to smallpox, according to the CDC. He guessed that exposure to cowpox could be used to protect people against smallpox and developed a vaccine.
Early on, Washington was against inoculating the troops since the British might take advantage, but he decided later to do it when they joined, so that they would be recovered when they got to combat.

And break into Pelosi’s office and smear excrement on the walls to commemorate that great event.
re: #8 Rightwingconspirator
As far as I’m concerned the Republican Party should be replaced. Insurrectionists and people (elected or not) that chose Trump over the law should be banned from running for any office.
There is a place for a spectrum of views here, a battle of wills over legit policy debate. The economy, the environment, the military, you name it. Dare I say it? Conservatives deserve an honest home. Without that, we don’t get an honest debate. Without that, we don’t get honest decisions.

I still think the Cheneys are doing this because they foresee some kind of overwhelming disaster overtaking the Trumpites. It certainly isn’t because they are some kind of semi-decent, though now almost extinct, Old time Republicans. Darth is every bit as evil as Cheeto. He just isn’t as stupid, he depends less on the lowest level goobers, and he tended to direct his homicidal inclinations outside the country.
Yes Cheney is evil — but a very different type of evil. He wants a GOP that would have stayed in Afghanistan forever, that would have remained in Iraq, that would be very aggressive in FP, and that would see Putin as an enemy. Trump is everything he detests when it comes to FP; he doesn’t really care about domestic issues so much. He definitely opposes a GOP that follows a Trump-type policy abroad.
Jan. 6, most of us had a Doc Brown moment.

Missing the sarc tags?
The perp here was a 1/6 rioter, so AFA as Fox (still less the rest of the RW “news” cesspool) is concerned, officially considered a sympathetic character - either “peaceful tourist” or “dedicated patriot” or whatever - so their coverage would probably be more likely to be “Poor Emily Hernandez - driven to drink by her horrific persecution by the communistic Biden Adminstration“….

Dunno why he can’t ask daddy Dennis Wilenchik for money. Back in the day, Dennis was one of Joe Arpaio’s stooges and a special prosecutor appointed to cook up charges against the then owners of the Phoenix New Times. That turned into a huge mess and eventually, as part of the larger cleanup of Joe Arpaioxs misdeeds, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors paid out $3.75 million to the owners.

investigating, reporting on, and then modifying election laws is not division, nor “disgusting”
- it is recognizing what happened in all its stark ugliness.
- It is giving up all hope of a better past - one that could only be fabricated with deliberate whitewashing.
Uncovering and facing the truth is not weakness.
- It does not happen quickly.
- It does not forget.
And most of all it does not condone the past.
