The former president scammed $250 million dollars in low-dollar donations from his most passionate followers for his bogus Election Defense Fund, and only time will tell if the DOJ prosecutes anybody after the Jan. 6th Committee investigation concludes. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

Fat Guy is never going to jail. Best we can hope for is to keep him out of office.

We might be able to strip/impound his assets and bankrupt him again, but he will just grift up more money again and the only people who will lose out are the ones idiot enough to be associated with him.

If we can lock up the people who went along with it, it may discourage others from following the madman’s lead, but Trump should really be put away for the rest of his miserable life at a minimum.

I’m not sure if this has been discussed here, but Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair finally abandoned it’s obnoxious, “South African passport holders have to take a test in Afrikaans in order to prove they’re South African in order to board flights”.

Ryanair abandons controversial Afrikaans test for South African travelers

Afrikaans is only South Africa’s third most commonly spoken native language (after Zulu and Xhosa). Half of it’s speakers are (White) Afrikaaners, and the other half are the Cape Coloured* community, of mixed White, Black, Khoisan, and Asian origin. It’s not spoken natively by the Black majority, British South Africans, Asian South Africans, who together make up 87% of the population.

Afrikaans was imposed for a while during Apartheid rule, which is why it’s especially galling.

*For those not familiar with South Africa, that’s their actual name, it’s not an offensive term when referring to _them_.

He should have been put away years ago. We don’t need a Congressional investigation: his violations of the Emoluments Act, obstruction of justice and blatant conflicts of material interest should have enough but we lacked the political will and the 2/3 majority.

The fact that he has not been even convicted to date indicates that it is not likely to happen.

Someone in the media should ask Cornyn that so that when Cruz or Rand Paul puts in the “no effort” fillibuster reservation it’s on the GOP to work out how they get their own to support the bill. And when it fails it’s on the GOP for failing to care about the safety of children and citizens over the $$ power of the NRA and the all-mighty gun.

Democrats refuse to play hardball and the media is complicit in the GOP’s supposed (and false) lack of agency when it comes to bills failing to pass.

We’re not going back to the false promises of trickle-down economics.

We’re going forward to an economy that works for everyone.

There are plenty of people ready to torpedo the entire economy before they allow that to happen (namely the ones who can afford to ride out an extended economic crisis)

It is, perhaps, hard to understand why Prince Andrew thought it would be a good idea to relaunch himself into public life on Monday, just 20 weeks after he paid a reputed $12m to settle a sex abuse and rape claim against him brought by a sex trafficking victim of his friend, the late sex offender and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

“The thing about Andrew,” a former royal staffer who previously worked with the prince told The Daily Beast, after surveying the wreckage of the past few days, which culminated in Andrew being obliged to pull out of a key ceremonial public appearance Monday, “is that you cannot possibly underestimate his arrogance. Everything you read about him, everything you hear about him, it’s not just all true, it doesn’t even begin to capture the entitlement of the man.”

FAFO:

Moorish Sovereign arrested, despite ‘police status’ in new republic

An Indianapolis couple, Lenora Jackson and Carl Dowd, explained to police that they are members of the Moorish Society and not subject to federal, state and local laws, nor arrest by local law enforcement, and they gave police a pamphlet explaining their government, Thorntown Deputy Chief Derek Babcock wrote in a probable cause affidavit.

Jackson had called 911 asking for help when the car in which they traveled with an 18-year-old and two children ran out of gas and the battery died at about 2 a.m. June 5, according to court records.

But Dowd, 37, was belligerent from the beginning of their contact with local police, and the children moved to defend him from police, Babcock wrote in the affidavit.

The stranded car’s fictitious license plate read “United States of America Republic,” and police could not determine who owned the car because it lacked proper registration, Babcock reported.

Babcock explained that he’d have to impound the car, as it was not legal to drive at the moment, and “at this point, all parties got heated and attempted to explain their republic, and stated it was a validly registered vehicle …” Babcock wrote.

and then the discussion went south from there

What wins people over is talking about the consequences systems have. So instead of saying, “the AI will start hoarding resources to stay alive,” I’ll say something like, “AIs have decisively replaced humans when it comes to recommending music and movies. They have replaced humans in making bail decisions. They will take on greater and greater tasks, and Google and Facebook and the other people running them are not remotely prepared to analyze the subtle mistakes they’ll make, the subtle ways they’ll differ from human wishes. Those mistakes will grow and grow until one day they could kill us all.”

‘Pack Your Stuff and Get Out of My House,’ Says Patriot Front Member’s Mom

Amsden had warned her son after previous Patriot Front trips that he’d get into trouble if he continued associating with the group.

“He’s so misguided and bought into all their rhetoric. It just makes me sick,” Amsden said, adding that she hopes his arrest is a “wake-up call” to quit.

“This is not who I raised,” she continued. “This is not the example that was set for him.”

Amsden said that since his teenage years, her son was “looking for some kind of connection” and “brotherhood.”

He landed on Patriot Front years later.

Boyce was married and living with his then-wife and their kids when he became involved with the white supremacist group around 2018, according to Amsden. She said Boyce’s spouse told her that he found the organization online and that he “had to complete an application and send some money to join.”

snip

Boyce and his ex-wife share custody of their children, who Amsden described as “the light in my life.” Her grandchildren are “really the only reason” she continued her relationship with Boyce as his views became more and more repugnant, Amsden said.

Once Boyce sank deeper and deeper into white nationalism, Amsden said she began to research Patriot Front for potential clues as to why her son was so enthralled. Amsden considered calling the police to advise them of Boyce’s white nationalist leanings, but since he hadn’t committed a crime, she wasn’t sure this was the right move. Her worries came to a head with Boyce’s arrest this past weekend.

On Monday, Amsden was still trying to process the news as she prepared for Boyce to move out of her home. Boyce instructed her not to speak to the media or to the FBI, a request by which she said she has no intention of abiding.

“He actually just showed up here at my house,” Amsden said. “And it was a moment I’ve kind of dreaded because I was hoping he was going to change his attitude. But he’s not.”

A document, titled ‘1776 Returns’, which federal prosecutors said was used by the leader of the Proud Boys, lays out a plan to occupy Capitol buildings on Jan. 6, 2021, using covert operators to let ‘patriots’ inside government offices in an apparent effort to force a new election,” NBC News reports.

The document “demands a new election — ‘not a recount’ — that involves ‘paper ballots only, no mail in ballots, no absentee ballots,’ with the National Guard monitoring the proceedings.”

A comment on Charlie Pierce’s blog:

Once again, repeating for the west coast and all the ships at sea…..the United States has had true “socialized medicine” in the form of the Veterans Administration - the VA owns the clinics and hospitals; it hires and pays the staff and doctors and nurses, and is in fact a government-owned and run enterprise. And here’s the dirty little secret - the first precursor to the current VA was created in 1620, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when the governors decided to pay for the medical treatment for soldiers wounded while fighting against the hostile Indians in the colony. This tradition was maintained through the wars of the 18th century, the Revolution, and through the 19th and early 20th centuries, until the Veterans Administration was codified in the 1920s….. We have had true “socialized medicine” for over 400 years…..

What the Ukrainians really need is air power. Full-spectrum air supremacy, not just anti-aircraft defense. They need missiles, including missiles capable of penetrating into Russia proper and neutralizing Russian air defense and command/control, Reaper drones with Hellfire missiles, fighter jets, ground support aircraft like the A-10.

The war would be finished in about 45 days, with the Russians suffering a decisive defeat.

re: #100 Belafon

In many ways, very true. Or at least a greater sense of urgency than we have shown for the past 20 years.

There are certainly a lot of supply bottlenecks, like certain chips. And a number of other systems had their production lines closed as they were redesigned.

I guess that some systems could have their production lines restarted or additional shifts added.

But yes, the current situation is that we are nearing the end lifespan of a lot of systems. Many of whom were purchased in low numbers due to the “Peace Dividend”. And now there is the demand of a major war.

On the other hand, the Russians are even more f@cked.

From random tweets I have seen, a lot of countries are watching the performance of various systems in combat. And then ordering future delivery of the systems that impress them.

Which western systems are not being permitted into Ukraine?

Yup, the German systems.

And what systems have I not seen new orders for? (Admittedly, I have not looked particularly hard at this point.)

Yes, the German systems.

Apparently the German economic sector dependent upon the Russians still politically out-muscles the German Defense sector.

I meant to mention that I understand that the US has sent a couple of the larger drones to Ukraine. My assumption is that this is a “proof-of-concept” experiment between the US and Ukraine. If it goes well, the program will probably be expanded.

Not all US systems have been well received by troops in the field.

I have seen questions regarding the interest of troops in the field to use the switchblade systems. Obviously, I suspect that issue is carefully being investigated by both countries.

Also, I suspect that the extremely limited available energy and focus will be redirected to more popular and heavily used systems. Remember that Ukrainians are having to redesign major segments of their military on the fly while fighting a full-scale war. Particularly their supply, maintenance and support functions. Remember that they started out designed around the WW2-based Soviet logistic system.

Also, I understand that Slovakia announced that it was sending some of its Mi-17 helicopters to Ukraine.

“Dissolution of this union”

Hmmm… I’m not sure the average right wing asshole has thought this reality through:

toll roads everywhere… rural makeshift tolls would be set up en mass by every local yahoo Sheriff or wingnut with an AR-15. The race to declare quite a lot of local jurisdictions their own sovereign nations would be unhinged.

The real possibility of one or more states actually attacking another state militarily over water rights, mineral and oil rights, or just a plain power grab, especially with fascist governors infesting Republican governments across the country.

Nuclear proliferation inside the US itself. Nutcase state Governors like DeFascist and Abbott will want their own personal nukes as a matter of bravado and cities like the NYC area would likely be forced to respond as a MAD deterrent. The Ukraine lesson has been learned across the globe by now.

Complete unraveling of the USD and Social Security simply goes away. Just imagine this for a second.

These are just a few unthinkables that could come with any “dissolution”. For this country’s sake the current election scam going on in NM better not proliferate in 2022 or more importantly 2024 or things might get close to it.

White nationalist right-wing authoritarians don’t get Star Trek at all, but are somehow still fans, probably only seeing it as a bunch of battles.

In spite of Star Trek’s long history of promoting diversity — as in, like, from the very, very beginning — its fandom is not immune to the kind of ugly racism that comes from the smallest of minds. The reactions to Star Trek: Discovery have sadly served as proof of the hatred among Trekkies. As the first series in the franchise led by a Black woman — Sonequa Martin-Green — and working harder than most series to give representation to women and the LGBTQ+ community, Discovery is often the target of racists and those who can’t stop themselves from criticizing it for being overly “woke.” Now one of the producers has opened up a bit about the hateful messages received from fans literally as soon as Martin-Green and Michelle Yeoh stepped on screen in the premiere episode.

Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter posted the transcript and audio of its latest THR Drama Showrunner Roundtable. The producers present included Ben Stiller (Severance), Dan Fogelman (This Is Us), Peter Gould (Better Call Saul), Soo Hugh (Pachinko), Elizabeth Meriwether (The Dropout), and Jenny Lumet (The Man Who Fell to Earth). When the subject of extreme fan reactions came up, Lumet — who is also a producer on Star Trek: Discovery — spoke up about the racist backlash against Yeoh and Martin-Green. “In the premiere of Discovery, we had Michelle Yeoh and Sonequa Martin-Green on a planet walking around,” Lumet recalled. “The hate mail! ‘There are no Black people or Asian people in space!’ Yeah, I know. It’s tricky. ‘There’s the blue guy over there and a tentacle guy over there, but Michelle Yeoh? What the f-k is she doing there?’”

Pfizer’s three-dose vaccine would cover children 6 months through 4 years old, while Moderna two-dose vaccine would be for children 6 months through 5 years old. States have already ordered millions of doses. Depending on what regulators do, White House officials have said administration of doses could start in earnest on Tuesday.

The feeling I get is that the Ukraine war is now coloring the entire international political scene, with many actors trying to position themselves for a better place in the 21st century pecking order.

The Germans are obviously afraid of what will happen if Russia decides to never send any more fossil fuels their way.

The Russians need the money so they have to sell, but if things go from bad to worse then of course the Russians can go whole hog into a theater war.

It’s becoming clear also that nations which for decades have been on the periphery of international politics now want to become more prominent. Poland, Spain, Sweden.

And it is also becoming a bit uncomfortable in east Asia if South Korea now feels the need to use its industrial capability to turn the tide elsewhere.

All we need now is a junta in Brazil and an Indian/Pakistan war to really kick off another world war.

That’s terrifying. He has joint custody of his children; who knows how much he will poison them so that this evil is passed down to a new generation.

Turning our society over to a potentially hostile alien intelligence never ends well for the human race.

Are you talking about times in human history?

I watched CNN’s reporting on the Capitol tour and they just couldn’t bring themselves to say that it was something that looked really bad for Loudermilk. They introduced the segment calling it a “crackling dispute”. Both sides!

That’s just what right-wing authoritarians do. It’s been going on for quite a while, and produces people like Ben Shapiro.

If the mother is not of the same ilk, this kind of behavior would get that changed in Wisconsin very easily. Take a couple of court dates but once he’s convicted, even of a misdemeanor, you can show a pattern of behavior that would require, at minimum, that visitation be watched by a social worker.

What did they think Sulu was?

Or Uhura, who famously had the first interracial kiss on TV with Shatner.

Sulu was male and in a subordinate role; Martin-Green and Michelle Yeoh are minority women (how dare they!) in lead roles. Wasn’t it Shirley Chisholm who said that she faced more obstacles being a woman than being black?
