“Trump’s Election Lies”

I had heard that CNN was going to stop using the phrase “The Big Lie”. I had not known where they were going to take it.

“If it is what you say, I love it.” :)

Regarding Biden’s fall:

SPD clips are pretty easy to get used to, but you will still sometimes fall. I once rode up a hill with a strong headwind and my chain fell off. I came to an immediate standstill with both feet clipped in and I fell right over. It was that fall that made me ditch the SPD clips and go back to wide flat pedals with Five Ten shoes. I don’t think I’ll ever go back. I love being able to wear whatever shoes I want and hop both feet off when I’m around cars.

Also, Biden’s legs look like a 30-year-old! I plan to keep cycling so mine will stay in shape like his!

(Kozei => Retired Polish General Stanislaw Kozei)

If true, I suspect that this was cleared through the Polish Government and Defense Establishment.

In that case, it would be a warning to the Russians that the Poles are not amused with Russian threats, nor with Russian missiles landing close to the border.

And also a trial balloon for the rest of NATO.

The Poles have done this on a number of occasions since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And often succeeded in getting their way.

I remember skidding out once (took a turn too sharp) while cycling in my early 20s.

I scraped up my shin and lower thigh pretty bad and it hurt, but after resting on the grass a few minutes, I got back on and finished my ride.

Getting occasionally banged up is the price of being active. I

They must have some inside information.

The Russians have been shooting missiles at targets in Western Ukraine. The Russians have not tried to send warplanes too far into Ukraine because the Ukrainians have a tendency to shoot those down.

They have also threatened to drop missiles on Poland for acting as a way station for Western war material resupplies to Ukraine. This of course would be an attack on a NATO country. And if Russia is already not doing well in Ukraine, picking more fights is likely to be highly counterproductive to Russian goals.

My guess is that the Poles are trying to influence and drive NATO policy on protecting shipments of military goods to Ukraine by getting out in front of the issue.

And also slapping down Russian attempts to threaten and intimidate NATO.

Re: Michael Flynn
Flynn is basically from my generation of officers, commissioned in the late 70s and early 80s. This was a period of transition, with major changes in doctrine and a very significant step up in professional standards. Unfortunately, there was also a trend toward open politicization, especially once Reagan had been elected. Some incoming officers, especially those without personal experience of the Vietnam war, felt that the long standing commitment to political neutrality had been discredited. Old hands (like me) tended to believe just the opposite, that political acquiescence had helped precipitate the disaster. Flynn is a member of this old Reagan clique, which has always assumed that conservative political objectives and national security were one and the same.
As we have seen with General Milley, this mob’s influence has declined significantly, but it hasn’t altogether disappeared. Evangelicals, for example, are known to have made a conscious effort to infiltrate the armed forces. This is a natural follow on to the Reagan clique. Fortunately, this has been pursued with their normal level of competence, meaning that it has not been as successful as they and their fellow fascists would like.

ckkatz  Jun 18, 2022 • 6:16:29pm

Yes there are some rather hard feelings between Russia and Poland.

In 2010, the then Polish President of Poland and all aboard his plane died in a crash at a Smolensk, Russia airport. There are many in Poland who believe that this was due to a Putin dirty trick.

There was also the post WW2 Russian occupation of Poland.

During WW2 Russia and Nazi Germany divided and occupied Poland. Russia arrested and murdered as much of the Polish leadership as it could get its hands on. In 1944 Stalin let the Nazis murder the Polish Free Army by not coming to their uprising in Warsaw.

(Of course the Nazi’s murdered about 20% of the Polish population during the 5 years they occupied Poland.)

And the Prussians and Russians divided up Poland in the 1790s. Poland was only freed as a result of WW1. Even then, at the end of the Russian Civil War, the Russians tried invading Poland and were defeated.

Very interesting thread! Thanks for posting it.

At first, I had thought that Hagan was being sarcastic and snarky. But his follow-on tweets show that he is seriously praising Luttig and giving Luttig the opportunity to address issues on his health and speaking abilities that observers brought up.

ETA - BWS cut the Gordian knot and posted the tweets that Luttig addresses these issues.

Ronald Reagan has been out of office 33 years now. It still saddens and angers me to think about the damage he managed to do during his 8 years in the White House. It is still very much with us, especially in the barbarous forces he helped legitimize and bring to prominence. We were at a crossroads in 1980, and we picked the wrong fork.

Reagan was a reactionary, though not as ideological as his supporters.

America has always tilted towards right wing reactionary politics. Sometimes there is a brief interlude (progressive activist abolitionists, Teddy Roosevelt modernism, FDR semi-socialist programs to counter the rise of radical leftists).

These are interspersed with long periods of reactionary nationalism.

Jefferson was a flawed but still Enlightenment-oriented leader. But by the time Jackson became President it was clear that nationalism for the sake of gaining wealth dominated American politics.

Trump is just a combination of Andrew Jackson (minus the bravery part) and George Wallace. Trump brought nothing new to American politics, he picked fruit from trees planted long ago.

There are a few differences:
1. Neither Jackson nor Wallace showed allegiance to foreign rulers.
2. Neither sought power for the purpose of enriching themselves personally.
3. Jackson did not seek a third term though it was legal under the Constitution at that time. He may not have had respect for the Supreme Court (and neither do we for this Court), but he did not attempt to subvert our institutions to remain in power.

I got commissioned in 1978 as a shavetail butter bar in the USAF, and I will vouch for this.

When I got to K.I.Sawyer (aka K.I. Siberia AFB) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1980 flying Big Ugly Fat Fuckers for SAC, the first thing I noticed in the Alert Shack was that there were a BUNCH of prayer meetings/bible readings going on most nights. And almost all of the attendees were AF Academy grads (Zoomies).

It got worse as time went on. When I got the opportunity to cross train into Tankers in ‘82, I jumped at it because the bomber crews never got to go anywhere. But the Tanker crews were even more into Jeebus.

And they came after me like I was fresh meat. I had one pilot, a Zoomie Evangelical from Minnesota, who told me my Performance Review would depend on my love of the Lord. I offered to break his nose, given that our job was to assist in the killing of as many Russkies and eastern Europeans as we possibly could and any true follower of Jesus would never work for SAC.

This shut him up, but I didn’t extend my commission. I loved flying jets, but I hated the AF.

I remember articles from years ago that there was a serious problem within the AF and its support of religious zealots. The Air Force Academy was apparently notorious for religious intolerance.

Watching Hulu this evening: tons of ads against Senate bill S.2992, invoking scary-to-conservatives images of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, suggesting it’s a security problem vis-a-vis CHYYNA!!! and showing lots of small business owners’ scripted worrying about the effect it will have on them. So many obvious propaganda tells.

So according to Center for American Progress:

“People would likely enjoy e-commerce cost savings: Amazon’s market power in e-commerce has given it the power to charge high costs for sellers, which are passed on to consumers. A recent analysis from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance found that, “Using a variety of fees, Amazon now pockets a 34 percent cut of the revenue earned by independent sellers on its site … That’s up from 30 percent in 2018, and 19 percent in 2014.”41 These costs are passed onto consumers in the form of higher prices for goods bought on Amazon. In the near term, the bills prohibit rules that would force sellers to use extra services in order to compete effectively on the platform.

Lots of money at stake, and it’s ours.

Flynn is a member of this old Reagan clique, which has always assumed that conservative political objectives and national security were one and the same.

This statement is something I used to believe in “The Dark Times”. It was something I just took as a tautology. No matter what else I thought. The Republicans cared about National Security, and the Democrats didn’t take it seriously.

I know now that this is complete horse shit. I know a lot of people that are retired military that still think this way. Literally every African American I know that votes republican, is in this category. That said not everyone I know that is current or ex-military votes Republican either.

Someone is or at least was still spreading this idea after your generation.

I’m going to put a anecdotal personal observation behind a private tag in another comment.

According to some people, Rockwall will be getting an HEB. We’re approaching 50k people, and, after that gets built, we will have a Tom Thumb, two Krogers, two Aldis, a Walmart and a Market Center, and the HEB. The county, which is at about 120k, includes an additional Walmart and a Brookshire’s.

The city had about 19k and county had 47k people when I moved here in 2001.

Lots of money at stake, and it’s ours.

“Small business owners” like the kind who showed up to 1/6 on private jets and begged the judges to allow them to go on holiday in foreign locales while awaiting trial.

Trying to decide who’s worse— the Winklevoss twins or their nemesis Zuckerberg. I doubt that they would have developed anything with the reach of Facebook if Mark hadn’t “stolen” their concept. Zuckerberg may have done more long lasting damage to our society (or maybe Twitter is more at fault). OTOH, as much as I don’t like him, I’m in full agreement with Bill Gates that there is no merit — no there there — for the whole concept of cryptocurrency.

Hitler was basically jailed after the Beer Hall Putsch because the Wiemar government felt they needed to do something with him in order to maintain their legitimacy as a government. So the “punishment” was something between white collar prison and house arrest: He was kept locked up, but he lived a life of relative luxury, regularly had visitors (including fellow conspirators), and had plenty of time to continue his plotting against the government while they portrayed his “incarceration” as a very serious thing.

I think it was his cuts in education that started leading to the decline in political discourse in this country.

I think it was his cuts in education that started leading to the decline in political discourse in this country.

The most damaging policy from Reagan was the elimination of the Fairness Doctrine.

The loss of some sort of balance over the airwaves ever since then radicalized a huge swath of America. A sort of captive audience emerged in lonely rural trucks, cars and homes across the country where the only AM radio station one could get featured nothing but Rush Limbaugh, various clones and copycats, and conspiracy loon DJ shows.

Steady right wing propaganda ever since greatly turned an entire demographic of America against their own economic self-interests and push one fear-based conspiracy attacking “real Americans” after another.

This article argues that we shouldn’t try to identify alien signals from space because it might be cosmic malware giving us directions to , in effect, create Skynet. At first I considered this extremely implausible because it couldn’t benefit the senders in any way. Then I thought, unless, of course, the alien civilization is an AI, and this would be a way for it to spread itself across interstellar space by directing organic civilizations to propagate the AI.

The slippery slope 2a argument wrt a French swimming pool

If we say we only want to go to the swimming pool — nothing else — they say, ‘Yeah, but after that you will ask for separate swimming hours [for men and women] and then after that, you will ask to pray in the swimming pool, and then open a mosque in the swimming pool,’ ” he says and laughs. “Come on guys, be serious, we just want to go swim.”

The White settlers in America wanted to grow labor-intensive cash crops like tobacco, sugar cane and cotton. They required workers but could not find white people who would do it voluntarily.

The reason black people are in America is largely because White settlers were unable to do the all work needed and too cheap to pay others to do it for them.

Just before the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, Putin sent forces into Kazakhstan to support the regime against anti-government riots. Looks like the regime is now trying to get some distance from Putin.

I seem to recall that at least one other Central Asian FSU state is also seeking more distance from Russia. Which is interesting because the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban has put Islamist insurgents right at their doorstep. And religion is the only institution left to oppose the ruling autocrats.

Last week I was seeing weird online rumors that somehow the Russians had bombed a US airbase in Syria.

Needless to say, that is not what happened.

Turns out that the US supported a Syrian anti-government group. It had positions near a US base in Syria.

The Russians called the US up and said that they were going to be near the US base in order to bomb that group. The US told the group that the Russians were coming to bomb them. The group split. (As the Russian knew was going to happen.) The Russians bombed the empty positions.

The obvious logic for Russia’s neighbors now, when Russia tries to tell them what to do, is “what are you going to do about it if we don’t?” Having tied up almost their entire conventional ground forces in Ukraine to be bashed up into little bits does make it hard to threaten their usual victims. And it’s not only Kazakhstan that’s going to start doing this.

Seems to be SOP in Syria: IIRC, a similar scenario played out early in TFG’s Admin - where he got all kinds of whoopdedoo plaudits from the media for a major missile strike on some encampment or other - whose Russian/allied personnel had gotten a timely notice to beat feet……

Nobody asks the Muslim women why they want to wear headscarves or body coverings. There could be various reasons ranging from fundamentalist religious convictions to social and family pressure.

And yes, I recall that there was a great deal of trouble with young Muslim men harassing Western women at swimming pools in Germany, figuring that any woman who dressed in a certain way in public must be a harlot and strumpet.

Don’t be surprised if Trump does win in 2024 (or likely any other Republican) the entire Ukraine conflict will be turned on it’s head by the US officially withdrawing intel support, arms or training.

If it is indeed a Trump win it is likely he will announce a full “partnership” with Putin to end the Ukraine conflict now and actually help Russian victory efforts in a very public effort to lower gas prices and other economic problems. There will also be an unspoken hard right wing ideological alliance that will be hard to ignore, but many will simply because they indeed do want cheap gas.
