Even though it’s a pain in the backside to be on call four days in a row over a holiday weekend, there are benefits. Especially when the holiday weekend is also at the end or beginning of the month, because those usually coincide with month-end freezes. And usually people don’t push in changes during month-end freezes because, well, ***HOLIDAY***. In fact, I’d rather be on call over a holiday weekend and have nothing happen, rather than be on call for a mere 24 hours and have

Wis. school board members dismissed book about Japanese American incarceration as being ‘unbalanced,’ parents say

“Asked to clarify what kind of balance Buckmaster sought, he recommended that the students read about the Rape of Nanjing, Zielke said.”
….
“Buckmaster confirmed that the book was brought to the committee but was never moved forward to the full board. But he wrote that “at no point was this book banned or denied by the committee of the board or the full board.”“
…..
“”At one point, Terri Boyer, in the meeting, did say, ‘How would you feel if they were only allowed to choose books by white people?”

Both the UK and the US are unraveling because, it turns out, the “one simply doesn’t do that” crowd has no defense against “well, we’re doing it anyway.”

Up to now, Boris has gotten away with just shaking his head and stamping his feet like a three-year-old caught with a hand in the cookie jar and saying “nuuh-unh!!!”, and the GOP insist that what they are doing is perfectly fine, all in the name of Making America Great Again.

BoJo will hang on to 10 Downing Street with every last scintilla of his strength and the loyalists around him will too, because they know full well that no one else would ever put them in senior government positions. This is their one-and-only chance and if Boris goes, they’re out too.

Johnson will have to be dragged out of No. 10 kicking and screaming. Hell, the SAS will probably have to get involved once BoJo barricades himself inside the building, refusing to leave.

The 1922 Committee, which governs the Conservative Party, is mulling over the idea of changing their internal party rules to allow for another party-wide no-confidence vote in Johnson. If they announce that, likely in the next couple of weeks, then Boris will either have to suck it up - or threaten to call a General Election, which he (and everyone else) knows the Tories will lose badly. That threat is BoJo’s nuclear option.

But that’s all he’s got left at this point.

Suspect that the powers that be in the upper class of the UK, specifically the English Tories, now see BoJo as a negative for them to reach their next goals.

Sort of like Rogan turning on Trump. Even Rogan can read the writing on the wall, that the GOP knows it needs a new figurehead (DeSantis?) to be able to install their agenda.

Because he’s absolutely scuttling their chances at re-election. BoJo is determined to cling to power, despite some fresh new hellish scandal virtually every week, and the Tory bigwigs see him leading the party to an absolute electoral fiasco.

Or the GOP turning on Nixon.

But if they turn on TFG, they will lose a big chunk of their base.

Many will still come out to vote against whoever the Democrats are running, but a lot of them will just stay home, and the big thing about the DT base was that they could always be counted on to get out in big numbers.

Because he’s absolutely scuttling their chances at re-election.

Isn’t Labour still led by their amazingly clueless tall guy?

I suspect the real issue is that the Tories are looking for someone to blame as the Northern Ireland issue unravels, yet again.

Here for example is an editorial by a Brexiteer:

Ben Habib: We will not get Brexit under Boris Johnson, but rather the break-up of the UK

From the outset of Brexit it’s been my opinion that it was unworkable with Northern Ireland. If the Brits want hard borders then that means a hard border between NI and the Republic of Ireland.

And that hard border will be hated by many Irish.

I also suspect that what set off this round of Tory unease is the polling showing that Sinn Fein is growing in popularity in NI. The Unionists in NI knew they were going to be in trouble with Brexit, but the English masses in the countryside don’t care about them and voted to Leave.

Probably the best strategy for the Tories is to actually lose a quick election, put Labour in charge, so when NI blows up then Labour can be blamed.

Just like many in the the GOP realized that their best move was to put the Democrats in charge when the follow-on effects of the Pandemic really hit home economically?

And don’t forget the half-trillion dollar Wall Street bailout from DT. This puts Biden in the position of either bailing them out again or presiding over its inevitable Market Adjustment (i.e., crash).

Any internal border in Ireland will be a violation of the Good Friday Accords. Ignoring the fact that there is a border will be in violation of international trade agreements.

So damned if they do and damned if they don’t, might as well let the other party sweat it out.

There was a reasonable argument for protecting them from reprisals, and the government could not rule out the possibility of spies and infiltrators hiding in their midst.

But that does not begin to justify the way we went about expropriating and interning them.

People worry about DeSantis as a “smarter Trump.” But the thing about Trump is he has the persona developed over decades and pushed in “The Apprentice” as a brilliant businessman who gets things done, and DeSantis is just another politician. Will the people who don’t usually vote but turned out for Trump turn out if Trump isn’t on the ballot? I have my doubts.

That is essentially the hope regarding the GQP. That Trump is the necessary glue to hold the base together as lockstep supporters and ardent voters.

There was a reasonable argument for protecting them from reprisals, and the government could not rule out the possibility of spies and infiltrators hiding in their midst.

But that does not begin to justify the way we went about expropriating and interning them.

And there was no similar or widespread effort concerning German-Americans. And the German American Bund did not, as far as I know, have a Japanese-oriented equivalent that obtained any sort of size and influence.

Everything but the fucking guns that kill 40,000+ Americans every year for decades on end.

GOP solution to gun violence is to make guns even easier to get at. The do-something crowd complains, but when Congress is stymied by GOP/NRA obstructionists, the states are doing their part.

While GOP states are relaxing gun laws and make it easier for people to get firearms like the AR-15, Democrats are pushing gun laws that a majority of Americans want, and are trying to make it safer for all Americans.

The problem remains that we are only as safe as the least restrictive gun law states. Guns flow from these lax gun law states to those states that limit purchases and regulate more tightly.

Even still, the strong gun law states have a far lower per capita gun death rate than those with weaker gun laws.

It was clear where the GOP was heading even then. They were outright racist and have continued to devolve ever since.

Hell, I knew back in the 70’s when I was a little kid where the Republican Party was headed when the last holdouts of my entire extended racist family in Texas jumped ship from the Democratic Party to vote for Reagan. But that really started back in Nixon’s days.

I seem to recall my last remaining Great-grandfather at the time (age 98 or so) as being the very last Democratic Party holdout because according to him they were still “the party of poor farmers like him” despite him also being a really nasty racist.

That was Mrs. Fish’s question as soon as I mentioned that Republicans were fixating on prescription meds as being “the problem”. Being familiar with psychiatric medications and the effects of being taken off them, she said it was more likely the case.

The move towards authoritarianism is a worldwide phenomenon.

bbc.com

The article gives statistics on how Arab countries are viewing democracy as being detached from economic success. This view is not just an Arab view, but a more and more common failure inside places like the USA as well.

Without a strong social safety net and strong civil right guarantees, democracy by itself is only a means of selecting which leader is going to seek personal advantage over everyone else, and perhaps bring along and elevate the select part of the population just like himself. The USA, with our utterly corrupt SCOTUS and white supremacist fascist Republican Party, is busy rejecting civil rights and safety nets and are the first things to be destroyed towards creating economic distress and social chaos in order to achieve greater and greater power. Democracy is only the means. The goals can be expressed and attempted by any form of government and right now Arabs under economic stress are feeling the failures of societies without safety nets and strong government institutions. Republicans want to take us the US there as well.

- A Supreme Court that rules against the majority of the country on:

- and may side with Republicans next year who want partisans to decide our elections.
- Texas AG admitting he would welcome the return of anti-sodomy laws.

This guy replace Jeremy Corbyn two years ago as head of Labour.

So, why did it take to yesterday for Boris Johnson’s govt to realize Boris is a fucknut and want to resign? Did they have an epiphany?

No, they’re all seeing the writing on the wall and want to bail before it gets truly bad.

The GOP wants a fig-leaf republic to cover up the authoritarian/oligarch reality. Much as the USSR was an authoritarian oligarchy with a fig-leaf layer of “People’s Socialist Republic” layered on top.

I think it penetrated to the leaders and also enough of the rank and file that BJ scandal after BJ scandal, along with the clueless leadership, was going to get the Tories crushed in the next election. So damage control is to jettison him now and hope that his removal lessens that damage; e.g. the voters think BJ is the problem and not the Tories in general.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pat Cipollone, Donald Trump’s former White House counsel, is scheduled to testify Friday before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to a person briefed on the matter.

Cipollone, whose reported resistance to Trump’s schemes to overturn his 2020 election defeat has made him a long-sought and potentially revelatory witness, was subpoenaed by the select committee last week after weeks of public pressure to provide testimony to the panel.

The person briefed on the matter, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations, said Cipollone agreed to appear before the committee for a private, transcribed interview.

this here says no privilege would probably work

Just Security

In my view, Cipollone has no valid legal basis to refuse to appear—and once in the witness chair, there are no valid claims of privilege that would permit him to refuse to answer questions relating to matters the committee is investigating.

as to attorney client specifically:

Second, whereas the White House Counsel represents the President in his official capacity, much (or all) of Trump’s conduct relating to the January 6 Committee was undertaken in his personal or campaign capacity. …

Trump’s efforts to corrupt and obstruct the Joint Session—including his incitement of an armed, violent mob to attack the Capitol—reflected his private pursuit of power, not any presidential function. Because he was acting only as a person seeking office (a.k.a., a candidate), he exceeded his official capacity and lost the prerogatives that come with it.

Cipollone’s communications with Trump on this subject thus did not occur between a government lawyer and his client, and so they are not privileged.
