A Case of DUmb

Wed, Mar 17, 2004 at 10:14:24 am PST

The fine folks over at Democratic Underground are having a serious attack of the vapors, getting all lathered up over a mass hallucination that Bush will declare martial law and cancel the election: Bush And Martial Law... (Hat tip: Jheka.)

It’s hilarious.

They have a poll, asking “Do you think Bush will cancel the elections if he fears he will lose?” Right now, the results are:

Yes: 65%
No: 33%
Yes/Here’s My Scenario Of How He’ll Do It: 2%

There was this kind of nonsense in 1970 after Nixon ordered the Cambodian incursion. Somethings never change on the looney left.

All your elections are belong to us!

So only 33% of DU can be classified as non-clinically insane?

3 V the K  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 8:17:54am

In fairness, there was a certain fringe on the far right that thought Clinton would use the Y2K Scam Crisis to declare martial law.

The difference, I guess, is that this is the democrat mainstream that's freaking out.

the belief that the US government will ever impose nation wide Martial Law is indicative of both sides of the spectrum. Remember the ravings of the Milita movement and the far right wingers just a few years ago?

6 Moonbat_One  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 8:19:37am

The convention wisdom(?) on DU was that Bush would orchestrate a major terrorist attack like he did on 9/11 to suspend the constitution and install himself as dictator.

You'd think the 3/11 train bombing would have upset their calculus, but naturally they think the main issue that led to socialist victory was that Aznar lied about ETA being responsible, not that they were cowed by al-qaeda.

Comforting lies.

MoveOn.org has a "win without war" campaign. So for 560,000 US citizens have signed up to censure President Bush for his war in Irag. I fear for my country that so many raving lunatics are presently residing in the USA. God help us all if they win.

Actually, I don't.

Even if/then, people never took them seriously. They were rightly marginalized by the mainstream by their paranoia. These freaks appear to be normal voters. It's disturbing, to say the least.

19 V the K  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 8:30:11am

I wonder if there was a way we could jerk their chains even further... you know, set up a fake but realistic looking website with "liberated" papers outlining the Secret Plans to Implement the Bush-Ashcroft Reich? If anybody wants to set up something like this, count me in!

Can foreigners sign that censure petition?

Answer: Yes.

Don't sweat the moveon.org folksters. Without the international dollars pushing the 501(c)3 they'd fall off the map. The domestic funds that of course are legally donated are all going to the Moveon PAC and MoveOn Voter Fund. International funds go to the 501(c)3, which is the website.

25 Paul  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 8:34:56am

The DU, what can you say about these lunkheads? I'm surprised that 33% of them actually believe that the election will go ahead as scheduled. As November nears we can look forward to their growing hysteria and plans for dirty tricks against the "repugs", plans to "take it to the streets", plans to leave the country...none of which will come to fruition. The DU is a collection of ball-less wonders who are deathly afraid of any challenge to their skewed world view and their tin foil hat conspiracy theories. They used to be good for laughs but now they're just pathetic.

bushler cannot just cancel the election because he will lose. There will have to be another "attack" or series of black op incited civil disturbances to justify martial law.

The DU "people" are going to be really entertaining come October.

Meanwhile, people who actually live in a police state are burning pictures of Khamenei. I wonder if we transplanted these DUmbie freedom fighters in Iran whose side they would be on.

Shh! I have it on excellent (but very secret) authority that not only will President Bush cancel the elections, he has a new bill in motion to allow his wife to become Vice President. His father will become Secretary of Defense and his mother will be Secretary of the Treasury.

But the really scary part - he is going to make tin foil illegal!

We cannot allow this to happen - be sure to vote on DU as often as you can.

PLEASE delete this after reading - I don't want you to be in any danger (otherwise I may have to kill you for learning the TRUTH).

30 zombie  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 8:39:13am

Any president who declared martial law in the U.S. would go down as the villain of history, and would be reviled for the rest of time as a maniacal dictator. No doubt about it.
Now, let me get out my encyclopedia and see who was the last U.S. president to declare martial law. Ah, here it is. And his name was...
Abraham Lincoln.

Okay, I normally don't mock bad spelling as mine can be atrocious, but that's funny. "Who's the law 'round these parts?" "Marshal Dillon, over there by the saloon."

33 Scott S  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 8:43:19am

Our best example was NYC and Giuliani, when they contemplated cancelling term limits so he could run for a 3rd term. This was preposterous. We should never change law (or elect officials) based on pure charged emotions. Luckily we came to our senses in time - we had 2 months. Spain had 2 days... they were doomed.

37 happycynic  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 8:48:44am

I think my favorite comment was the one about how one DU nutter "wouldn't let this country go without a fight."

Isn't the problem with the radical left precisely that they won't fight? Doesn't Spain prove that lefties would rather be the communal prison b*tch than lift a finger or shed an ounce of blood?

I suppose the "resistance" this DU nutter is talking about is a very, very strongly worded letter using harsh language calling everyone a "nazi," or worse yet, the dreaded "protest," where a bunch of loonies get thrown into the pokey and call it a victory.

Now that I think about it, maybe Bush should declare martial law as a kind of joke, say on April 1st, just to see the hilarity of left-wing "resistance."

38 G-Funk  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 8:50:09am

Here's my take:

DU is a generic gathering place for insecure individuals to find solace in. These people have little to no actual control over their own lives, hence the conspiracy theories. It makes them feel 'better' to know that the government is plotting against them. That makes living in their parent's basement seem less dorky and more subversive.

They gather and discuss this stuff with others of their pack and, to coin their own term, the echo chamber begins. The only true way for a raging insecure liberal to change his or her ways is for something traumatic to shock them back to reality. This is so unlikely to occur, though, because our society has become perhaps the most well rounded and safe society in all the world.

Perhaps we do need those liberal 'reeducation' camps after all. ;)

25. Don't you think that the "terrorist attack" will somehow, strangely, be directed to an area in which Kerry will be at?

If it's as close to the election as the Spain bombing was, there is no way that, if Kerry & whomever are taken out of the equation by the attack, we would be able to get the ticket to reflect it.

(I have a paranoid mind. Never been diagnosed clinically, just the way I grew up, with bullies chasing me. Funny thing was, I was among the popular types until 4th grade.)

Bush could "compassionately postpone the elections" until a later date, when the "Red Alert" is lifted (if it ever would be). Thus keeping him in power

But I was popular until the fourth grade!! What the hell happened???

But you guys still love me? Right? Right? Do you want me to say Bush is Hitler?? Bush is Hitler!! Rove is the anti-christ!! Kucinich is hot!! I'll say it all, just love me, comrades!!!

I run in a fairly conservative circle. I never heard anybody remotely state the things that were supposedly said by the right wing militia types during the Clinton reign -- nobody that I knew ever thought that he was going to cancel the elections, smuggle cocaine into Mena, Arkansas, kill 100 of his closest associates, etc.

Yet it's not unusual for me to encouter a LLL who firmly believes that the Bush family had a blood coventant with the Saudis, that the US went to war to make Halliburton rich, that Bush went to war to avenge his father, that the US government is keeping a list of everything anyone ever looked at in a public library, etc.

If these DU'ers are way on the fringe and not close to the democrat LLL mainstream -- why do I keep running into people who believe these ludicrious theories -- when I never seemed to have run into anyone who held to the so-called right wing militia nonsense?

When I talk about the crazy shit I read on DU to friends who are liberal, they always say that those people are the exception, not the rule.

Then last year in November, the Democratic frontrunner Dean started mouthing the same crazy shit I had been hearing on DU for months (interesting theories about Bush being behind, 9/11, etc). Maybe it's a credit to Democrats that they spectacularly dumped Dean as he veered into DU territory. As much as I think Kerry sucks, they could do worse. Hell, I'd prefer Dean over Clark.

As several have pointed out, that's the difference between the right wing fringe and the left wing fringe. For the most part the looney right is belittled and trivalized. Or even stopped upfront.

Ever see what happens when three KKK members try to march? They are shouted down, the media universally condemns them, and all the local politicians speak out.

The looney left is given much better treatment. They are more accepted and thought of as legitamet.

There is a May Day bookstore in Mpls (and other left wing towns). Imagine what would happen if someone tried to open a Mein Kampf (sp) bookstore?

What's really troubling about that thread is not the loony minority who are swallowing the martial law conspiracy but the number of posts who believe the administration will 'black - ops' an attack, blame it on Al-Q and then use that as a campaign issue. That is downright scary.

Even the right-wing radicals had more reason to fear martial law under Clinton than these DUmmies. What has the Bush administration done that even comes close to:

FBI files on individuals in the WH private residence?
IRS audits of political opponents?
Kidnapping a young boy and forcibly deporting him?
Attacking a (cult) church with armored personnel carriers?
Using an FBI sniper to kill a mother with her baby in her arms?
Entering the office of a suicide before the police arrive?
Having staff members arrested and tried for embezzlement?

I'm sure that there's more that I can't remember off-hand.

OT: Minarets Rise in Germany (LA Times, via Yahoo)

I need to enlighten the Germans so their prejudice of Islam will go away," said Gulcek, whose Islamic organization is building the mosque.
The number of traditional mosques with their distinctive minarets nearly doubled in Germany from 77 in 2002 to 141 in 2003, according to Islam Archive, a Muslim research group in the city of Soest. An additional 154 mosques and cultural centers are planned
For many Europeans since Sept. 11, mosques are perceived — unlike churches or synagogues — as caldrons of radicalism instead of places of worship.

Yes it's interesting trying to follow the bizarre thought processes of the left. A terrorist bombing occurs in Spain which brings the left into power. Because of this uncomfortable fact, the left has to retreat into a fantasy in which the Republicans will 'probably' try the same tactic.

Another bit of projection on the part of leftists. It is the "Democratic" party that has been screwing around with elections in recent years.
If Kerry flounders look for them to do it again in their convention this summer. Look for Kerry to exit due to "health problems" and Edwards to step in for the final few laps.
If Bush has to go negative on Kerry he might succeed only to find he has been campaigning against a ghost for five months. Just like the guy who thought he was fighting Wellstone and ended up dealing with Mondale.
Look for all kinds of bizarre stuff next fall. It is going to be unreal.

Cancelling the election

I heard all the same things about Clinton, not from some Aryan Nations kook in the backwoods of Idaho, but on one of San Francisco's top radio stations. In fact, it was repeated ad nauseum by the guy who bills himself as the most popular "conservative" talk-show host after Rush, and who has a best-selling book. And I heard it mentioned quite a few times on this station's morning drive show, especially by a popular female host who has the intelligence of an artichoke.

The funny thing is that on the liberal counterpart station, I heard one of their most egregiously eveil hosts lamenting that the real reason Bush was going to invade Iraq was to establish a platform from which he could knock off Iran and Saudi Arabia. He was trying to scare and outrage his listeners, but my reaction was, "Man, I sure wish that were true!"

78 un-troll  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 12:13:49pm

Who are these freaks....they even have a poll showing Bush is 'worse' than Nixon?

What are they taking?

How did they get like that?

Where is this underground? France?

Excuse me I have to go now ,and prepare all 2000 of my absentee ballots

Jheka (#39):

I maintain that your formerly popular 4th grader has just not seen the right clinician.

She is easily diagnosed from DSM-IV:

Schizotypals are convinced that, behind their back, they are a constant topic of derision, mockery, criticism, or gossip. They suffer from ideas of reference. This is part of a larger pattern of bizarre beliefs, "theories", convictions, "scenarios", superstitions, and conspiracies that they adopt. Although generally not prone to delusions, the schizotypal is steeped in the occult and the esoteric to the exclusion of rational thinking and to the detriment of proper daily functioning.

DU = Collective Schizotypal Personality Disorder.

80 David All  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 12:39:00pm

The nuttier DU types sound so paranoid about Bush & Co., I wonder if they are not hiding out in a bunker somewhere in Montana. At least if they actually believed their rantings and ravings and acted according they would be hiding out in Montana or simliar remote locations!

BTW: Thinking back to Dr. Strangelove's General Jack D. Ripper, I wonder if we could plant a rumor at DU that the Bushitlers have infested drinking water with a substance that destroys the purity of our bodily fluids! I bet we could really get them foaming at the mouth about that!

Using an FBI sniper to kill a mother with her baby in her arms?

Not to nitpick, but Ruby Ridge happened in '92, under Bush 1.0.

Marshall Law

LOL! That one made my day. :)

CSPD aka Tin Foil Hat Brigade

An increasingly common condition, but fortunately easily curable, most notably by the application of gainful employment and removal of sufferer from conditions of negative reinforcement, i.e., other similarly afflicted individuals.

Hmm, good one Melissa.

#77 SY:

I believe that you're referring to Michael Savage who is, without question, a megalamaniacal, xenophobic, hateful loon. The fact that he is labeled as "right wing" and happens to despise Democrats and liberals (along with foreigners, gays and anyone that doesn't agree with him) is incidental to the fact that he is a bigoted waste of skin and organs that no one in their right mind would want to be associated with in any way.

Never gonna happen.

Bush will fix the election wiv 'is noo Electoral Guarantee Chip currently under development and will be used to upgrade the Diebold and other fancy-schmancy touch-your-forelock voting machines in November.

Expect 51% Republican win across the board.

I've been predicting this myself too. If Bush wins by a narrow margin, I guarantee we'll have four years of people whining that it was all a conspiracy by Diebold to make Bush president.

86 SY  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 1:36:16pm

Jheka: Yet here he is, nationally syndicated, best-selling, and made his breakthrough in this major market. And at afternoon drive time, not exactly the 2 am spot. So, we're not talking about obscure fringe types; people that had a plenty-big megaphone were spouting the same sort of nonsense, just in the other direction.

Your description of Savage matches my impression, but my liberal friends would honestly use the same language to describe the DU types. And you still have to explain the MORNING drive-time host who said the same thing. Loons are loons. Political media draw them like flies to a turdpile.

Terms like "right-wing" are Rorschach ink blots, anyway.

Hey whaddya have against Montana?!! Believe me, there are more LLLoonies in Montana than paranoid RRR, by a large margin. Montana's gone granola in the past 10 years.

I think the tin foil is wrapped a bit too tight.

#81 SpoogeDemon,

Thanks. Good catch. Ruby Ridge was 8/1992 and Clinton didn't take office until 1/1993. I didn't realize that until I googled it. William Sessions was FBI director from November, 1987 until Clinton replaced him in July 1993 followed by Louis Freeh in September 1993. Google is full of fun facts.

90 Atomic Redneck  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 2:06:24pm

If John Ashcroft and Janet Reno bred and had offspring, could we finally get an Attorney General that would kill the bad guys?

#90 Atomic Redneck:

I know some people really, really, really hate John Ashcroft, but I wouldn't wish that on the Devil himself.

92 DU Jimbo  Wed, Mar 17, 2004 2:22:39pm
Or that it was Gore who took the election case to SCOTUS.

Only in your dreams.

#66 Defense Guy:

What #92 would be saying if he could actually talk to people is that Bush, et. al. were the petitioners to the Supreme Court, not Gore. And he's right:

Bush vs. Gore

Thanks, y'all.

People said similar things about Clinton, but mainstream America thought they were nutty. They received much negative news coverage. I don't see the same level of news coverage on these loons.

#92 & 94 Jim:

You found my hat-tip thread. Sorry I couldn't be there for the Corrie activities yesterday. It sure was a train wreck. And the nazi apologist from today was a real peach.

Then there was the genius who thought that French citizens deserved to be murdered by Muslim extremists because the government banned religious items in public schools.

And then there's ... ahh, nevermind. You know what's there.

Oh what progressive webs we weave when first we practice to act like complete asshats.

Oh, and Jim:

I must commend you in your choice of role model. If anyong can lead you onto the path of enlightenment, its andthenblammo! Give him a chance. He'll make a proper neo-con of you yet.
