 RetweetDark Ages Spreading in Nigeria

By: Charles Johnson • Apr 30, 2004 at 11:55 am PDT

The governor of Zamfara State in Nigeria has ordered the demolition of all churches in the state, in accordance with Islamic shari’a law. (Hat tip: jrwalker.)

Governor Ahmed Sani of Zamfara State, has ordered the demolition of all churches in the state, as he launched the second phase of his Sharia project yesterday.

Speaking at the launch in Gusau, the state capital, Governor Sani disclosed that time was ripe for full implementation of the programme as enshrined in the Holy Quran.

He added that his government would soon embark on demolition of all places of worship of unbelievers in the state, in line with Islamic injunction to fight them wherever they are found.

The governor also disclosed that a law to compel employers of labor in the state to give their employees “prayer breaks” five times daily would soon be enacted by the state House of Assembly.

The governor’s stance on the demolition of all non-Islamic worship centres, however, runs contrary to the provisions of the country’s constitution, which states in Chapter 4, Section 38(1) that “every person shall be entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief and freedom (either alone or in community with others, and in public or in private) to manifest and propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching, practice and observance.

Commenting on Governor Sani’s decision, a lawyer and Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Barrister Ademorin Kuye, described the move as unconstitutional.

”The governor has no constitutional power to demolish churches in his state. The constitution guarantees the right of worship of every Nigerian. Nigeria is a secular state and a serving governor should not be seen as promoting one religion over the other ,” Barrister Kuye declared.

He warned the Zamfara governor not to embark on destruction of churches, as it would have grave repercussion in other parts of the country.

It would be recalled that Governor Sani introduced the Sharia Legal Code in the state in the year 2000, despite opposition from the federal government and religious groups.

The implementation of the system led to the amputation of the wrist of a cow thief, Malam Jangedi.

Governor Sani also made the retention of a long beard a condition for securing juicy contracts from the state government.

Meanwhile, Church leaders publish yet another statement about Israel and the Palestinians (most of whom are Muslims) but not so much as a squeak about the oppression of their felow Christians in Nigeria - and many other places.

Criticizing Muslims for human rights abuses against Christians seems to be off-limits, for some reason.

23 Kevin Shook  Fri, Apr 30, 2004 10:22:32am

Two immediate actions the U.S. should take:

1. Start drilling in Alaska and develope alternative fuels. The soon the Muslims have to start working for their money rather than sticking a spigot in the ground the sooner they will stop this insanity.

2. No more immigration of Muslims to this country, no more granting of U.S. citizenship to Muslims, revoke all green cards issued to Muslims and the immediate deportation of Muslim non-U.S. citizens.

Sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I'm a Catholic, and I'm increasingly disturbed by the Church's stand vis-a-vis Islam and Judaism. I read articles in the diocesan paper from the Catholic News Service (as LLL as any secular news org) and it's just incredibly biased. I happen to know the editor in chief of that paper, so I can bring it up to him, but there's not a lot I can do.

For so long I've been trying to defend the Church against charges of anti-Semitism, and it's getting harder. I'm not an anti-Semite, literally no Catholic I know is an anti-Semite, but still Church officials seem intent on siding with radical Islam instead of with our older brothers in faith, even when Muslims kill Christians.

About 65 years ago, a great horror spread across Europe, and the church did not do all it could to stem that tide. 65 years later that horror is building back around the world, and the Church seems set to take the same position yet again. It's frightening.

I love my Catholic faith, but sometimes I'd like to strangle the Catholic leadership.

30 lawhawk  Fri, Apr 30, 2004 10:30:06am

If this sounds vaguely similar to the Taliban's destruction of the priceless and peerless Bimiyan Buddhas, you'd be correct. Once again, you've got Muslim fundamentalists who seek to destroy all evidence of another religious group that has existed in the same region for countless generations, all in the name of Islamic law.

Do these folks know how to do anything other than destroy stuff and blow stuff up? /rhetorical question

We just need to pay attention to the root causes of all this terrorism. We need to hire more bureaucrats and grief therapists. More cultural sensitivity is crucial at a time like this. Their cultural need to destroy our culture must be recognized as legitmate as our own need to survive. Only when we establish creative empathy with our new friends will the paradigm shift enough for global capitalism to be destroyed, replaced by Islamism, thus forming a perfect workers' paradise.

"Another square, dude?"

Perhaps we might even pass a resolution amongst ourselves condemning the destruction of all the churches once it happens.

Either that, or folks who buyinto the WWII line that "If we speak out on Muslim attacks on Christians and Jews, it will make them worse." That didn't fly in WWII, and it's getting more people killed today.

Between being good little dhimmis to the Muslims and the Children's Crusade, there IS a middle ground, and I wish the Church would take it.

Criticizing Muslims for human rights abuses against Christians seems to be off-limits, for some reason

It's a typical aspect of dhimmitude. The Church will not criticize Muslims' absence of tolerance (to say the least) because this could lead to further atrocities against the Christians in lands controlled by Islam.

Remember that the dhimmis are forbidden to speak against their muslim masters, even worse, against Islam itself. If they do, they break the dhimma, the pact of tolerance, which allows the faithfuls to kill or enslave them.

Hence the typical attitude of the Church has consisted, over the centuries, in:
- understating the extent of muslim cruelty against christians.
- creating this idealised imagery version of 'Muslim tolerance' and accept Muslim values as a part of christianity.
- trying to bond with the muslims against a common enemy...that is the Jews

The best example of this type of behaviour is that of the orthodox churches in the ME, who are as, if not even more antisemitic than the muslims themselves. Of course, it is suicidal in the long term.

Read Bat Ye'or on the subject.

The loss of this war will tip the balance. If the Luddites on the left gain control then our culture and civilization will, like EUropes, disappear.

Hollywood civilizations collapse cataclysmically; real civilzations crumble, like desiccated sandcastles. Europe's gone, they don't have the cojones to take back control of their countries from the Jihadists. Bringing in the old Warsaw Pact is just buying time, maybe another generation or two. They can console themselves with their cultural and moral superiority which don't mean sh*t in the real world of the Jihad.

It is some type of conspiracy theory by those out to slander the ROP. I recommend Huntington’s “Clash of Civilizations” to people as therapy to the ROP message. Especially the section on Islam’s bloody borders. He breaks down the conflicts in the world and finds the “two-thirds to three-quarters of intercivilizational wars were between Muslims and non-muslims.

The press has long been in the Left's corner. The larger question is why the Right hasn't countered with anything substantive. Fact is, the Republican Party in the US won't take up the issue of Christian persecution overseas, just look at the Sudan for the most glaring example. Even African-Americans won't touch it.

This collective cowardice is what results when you won't name the enemy you claim to be fighting. It has to come from the top to be timely and effective.

Speaking of which--the phrase "Islamic Fascism" was used this evening on PBS' Evening News Hour by David Brooks, who noted that Kerry didn't use the opportunity today to name the enemy (Islamic Fascism). Since he almost swallowed the phrase and didn't elaborate, it doesn't really count too much, but it's another small advance.

Perhaps Islamic Fascism is too European in its pedigree to catch on--perhaps The Global Jihad might do the trick: it incorporates the enemy's own definition of what HE is doing. Bush used the word "jihadis" to identify the enemy in England when he was there recently, so...

"Criticizing Muslims for human rights abuses against Christians seems to be off-limits, for some reason."

This is, sadly, because many Christian, especially the Roman Catholic and Episcopal branches, have been hijacked by poitical correctness, which is rapidly becoming their true religion, not the faith which Christ preached.

And it is, of course, a tenet of the PC faith that Western Culture is evil, that the Moslem culture was learned and tolerant and that the Crusades were a terrible atrocity that Western Christians perpetrated against a peaceful Islam, apparently for no better reason than sheer fanaticism. (Remember Bill Clinton apologzing for them---and a lot of other things as well---after 9/11?) Therefore, Christians everywhere must continue to feel guilty about them, even after 700 + years, and do everything they can not to offend their sensitive Moslem brethren.

(Unfortunately, they have also absorbed much of the PC faith's suspicion of Jews---but that's really too long a subject to get into here.)

I'm not going to argue here whether the Crusades were right or wrong, or the history of Western Europe; the fact is, many modern Christians have been taught to feel this way by their leaders, and this does indeed hamper them from taking strong stands in favor of their fellow, persecuted Christians.

Islamofacists continually accuse the western world of producing "Crusaders," but they really have nothing to fear on that score; so far from being a band of ferocious, mail-clad warriors, lusting to smite infidels, much current Christian leadership resemble nothing so much as Don Knotts stumbling in some 50's type Disney kids movie, "Mr. Chicken goes crusading", clanking about in an ill-fitting suit of armor, waving his useless toy sword, and terrified of everybody except the actual bad guys sneaking up behind him! Crusaders, indeed! I wish some of them had a bit of the old warrior spirit!

///
But, you know, all this trouble in Nigeria is because Bush lied, and he stole Iraqi oil! If he'd just give back all the oil, and admit he lied, then all this bad stuff in Nigeria would stop!

/Still channeling the increasingly confused L3---thanks for reminding me about "Bush lied", V the K!

I can only repeat what has been said here - Where are the Christians denouncing this? Where is the recognition that that this intolerant Islamism is the mainstream in many Muslim countries?

Can you imagine the outcry if Israel advocated destruction of a single church or mosque? I can - it would bring on an emergency meeting of the UN. When will Europe recognize that this is a future threat to their own countries?

A must read for our good bishops:
Israel's state secret: the legality of settlements

from which the best argument:

The absurdity of claiming that the settlements are illegal is demonstrated by, for example, noting that Kfar Darom - a reconstructed Gaza settlement that Prime Minister Sharon proposes to dismantle - disappeared in 1948 only because of Arab aggression. But nobody said before 1948 that it was illegal. Has the intervening Arab aggression between the original and the reconstructed Kfar Darom made it illegal? Of course not. In fact even if there was no Kfar Darom before 1948, and if there was no mandate by the League of Nations, the custom and the law in the world is that land acquired in a war of self-defense is not returned. Furthermore, even the (non-binding) UN Resolution 242 does not call for total withdrawal - and Israel already withdrew from more than 90% of the territories - and even limited withdrawal only in a context of total peace and to behind secure and recognized borders

"Can you imagine the outcry if Israel advocated destruction of a single church or mosque? I can - it would bring on an emergency meeting of the UN. When will Europe recognize that this is a future threat to their own countries?"

Well, remember all the foo-farah just a short time ago, when Spanish Moslems wanted to pray in a cathedral which had once been a mosque, and many people got their knickers in a twist---at the Spanish Christians, not the Moslems---because the Christians weren't being "tolerant" and "inclusive", and "What's the harm in people praying together, you bigoted Christians, you!"
At last the Pope said something, but it wasn't nearly as fierce as his denunciations of the war in Iraq, or the Israeli settlements.

I'm afraid Europe as a whole has gone "Mr. Chicken Goes Crusading" (see my post #73, above) and will continue stumbling about in Don Knotts/Walt Disney manner as the Islamic world ties its shoelaces together, kicks it in the backside and sticks lighted matches between its toes, giving it a hotfoot.

You don't know how right you are, SH. Gov. Ahmed Sani wants to use the adulation he's now receiving throughout the North of Nigeria to propel him to the presidency in 2007:

Where in the hell is the press covering outrages like this. These muslims can commit whatever type of evil acts they wish with complete impunity.
