You’re not gonna believe this. LGF reader adin (via zombie) took these photographs at the Broome Street polling place in lower Manhattan—not far from the World Trade Center:

Gee. And I thought the little elephant beenie baby I was toting at the polls might be inappropriate. These people have no shame.

How in the world?! The feds need to go there pronto.

Has anybody contacted the powers that be about this?

You're right, I can't believe it.

Isn't this illegal?

6 Sarah D.  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 9:44:17am

Are they using an activist office as a polling place?

Did they forget to take the propaganda off of the walls?

Sheesh.

And I deliberately didn't wear my Bush buttons when I went down to the University's polling place...

I love that frumpy looking woman sitting by the voting booth with the big frown on her face.

You think she's a Republican?

That's a pretty scary lookin' she-man guarding the poll ...

Revolting! But what are you going to do? If you send the Feds to take that smutt down, US govt would be accused of censorship...

Best solution is for you (the one who took these pictures) to go back there and leave behind Posters of of 9/11 with a sign "Created by Clinton- Crushed by Bush" People forget so quickly and take for granted the lack of a new Al Qaeda attack on US soil.

15 Jack Burton  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 9:49:15am

Un-fucking-believable

For the sake of fairness, they should also have posted some "artwork" of Osama bin Laden beside the smoldering ruins of the WTC.

17 BenJeremy  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 9:49:25am

I'm guessing this isn't the local VFW hall?

WTF? When I voted this morning, I was accosted, within 30ft of the building, in the parking lot, by a woman campaigning for a Democratic State Rep (My wife just told me the police carted her off a little while ago), and when I walked into my polling place (the local VFW hall, for my precinct), there were, of course, patriotic imagery, but specifically no political messages. In fact, there was a specific statement to the effect of: "The VFW does not support one candidate over another..." - perhaps in regards to the Swiftboat Vets and the timing that was close to both candidates' appearances at VFW functions.

BTW: The guy in the first picture looks like a real "informed" individual. Heh.

18 J.D.  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 9:49:26am

Was that politically incorrect? Or just mean?

Sorry.

20 AlexM  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 9:50:05am

When I voted in NY, two poll workers were sitting five feet outside the curtain ranting and raving about the war in Iraq.

It was absolutely incredible. My great fear is that the Moveon.org types are the ones who have volunteered as poll workers across the country.

These are the guys manning the voitng machines and counting the votes.

21 Zaideh  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 9:50:39am

Remember: the pictures and stories that you see posted on blogs today will tend towards the exceptional and anecdotal, not the typical or the scientific.

By all means, identify and complain about improper activities at polling locations.

But don't believe any numbers or anecdotes you see until the polls close and responsible tallies can be made.

Patience. Courage. Faith.

Go out and vote!

Broome Street is in Chinatown, perhaps half a mile away from the footprints of the World Trade Center. Many of the residents of the area are recent immigrants (legal or otherwise), most of whom aren't eligible to vote. But the NY motor voter law provides for the automatic registration of anyone who claims to be a citizen.

43 ted  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:01:03am

During the first Presidential election, voters were lured to the polling booths with whiskey and drugs.

You might say this is an American tradition.

The theft is on in Minnesota. Besides MoveOn.Org campaigning at polling stations, this is on the Minn GOP website

11/02/2004 - Kerry Campaign Mass Vouching in Duluth

The Kerry Campaign appears to be involved in mass vouching activities in Duluth. Kerry Campaign operatives, going door-to-door, stopped at a voter's house and told her that they would vouch for her despite the fact that they did not know her.

Minnesota state statute requires that "a voter who is registered to vote in the precinct sign an oath in the presence of the election judge vouching that the voter personally knows that the individual is a resident of the precinct."

Sorry, not illegal (though completely tasteless) [perhaps lawhawk can speak better about this].

Accroding to the Fair Campaign Code (9 NY ADC 6201.1), the following are prohibited:

(a) Practices of political espionage including, but not limited to, the theft of campaign materials or assets, placing one's own employee or agent in the campaign organization of another candidate, bribery of members of another's campaign staff, electronic or other methods of eavesdropping or wiretapping.
(b) Political practices involving subversion or undermining of political parties or the electoral process including, but not limited to, the preparation or distribution of any fraudulent, forged or falsely identified writing or the use of any employees or agents who falsely represent themselves as supporters of a candidate, political party or committee.
(c) Deliberate misrepresentation of the contents or results of a poll relating to any candidate's election; also, failure to disclose such information relating to a poll published or otherwise publicly disclosed by a candidate, political party or committee as required to be disclosed by rule or regulation of the New York State Board of Elections.
(d) Any acts intended to hinder or prevent any eligible person from registering to vote, enrolling to vote or voting.

In other, words, you are prohibited from politicking for a specific candidate. These pictures are agitprop, but do not endorse, prima facie, one candidate over another.

77 RedWhiteAndJew  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:17:51am

The "art" is there not to sway committed W supporters, or to fortify sKerry sycophants. It's there to scare the living daylights out of the ignorant, the aged, and the mentally addled.

Contemptible.

(It's also there to keep lefty poll workers in their comfort zone, until they can get back their Che wallpapered apartments.)

78 goldsmith  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:18:11am

Ah yes, the Puffin Room, at least that's what it used to be called when I lived on Broome Street. Actually, I lived on Broome and Crosby, so I could see this place out my window. It's a non-profit (hardly a surprise, given the crap that is usually displayed there) art space and "community" center. I voted for Clinton in 1996 in that place, though I don't remember what was displayed on the walls as I voted. I am absolutely sure that these people organized this "art" show to coincide with the election, knowing that it would be a polling place. It's outrageous that this happened, but even more outrageous that these people see nothing untoward about this. Even in the darkest days of my college leftyhood, I would have been outraged that anyone, leftists or rightists or upists or downists, took advantage of our democracy in this way.

Sadly, probably 99% of the voters in this district share these sentiments and have no problem with it. Broome Street, at least the Soho end of it, is a very expensive place to live, and is almost entirely populated by the decadent, wealthy 'left' pretending to be bohemians.

79 ibn Abu  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:18:22am

I had a nightmare last night that Kerry won. I actually woke up shaking.
I'm afraid that nightmare will repeat tomorrow, except for real.

If this country lets the vote be close enough for the Dems to steal the election, then we collectively deserve all the misery that 4 years of Kerry will bring us.

I voted this morning. No line, just waited for the farmer in his muck boots to do his thing in the booth. It was 9:15 and I was already #52 to show up. No artwork, just some crocheted items made by the seniors at the community center on display.

I can't believe good people like those in this community and ones like it all across this nation this would fall for the lies of you-know-who.

83 mad_scientist  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:20:52am

I had an encounter with a real life troll today! a friend of mine who goes to a very liberal school in a very liberal area of a very liberal county of NY had a "VOTE BUSH!" away message up, so I wrote to her suggesting it might not be the best idea, as it's likely to draw harassment from people, particularly rabid anti-bush folks that I KNOW exist in/around where she is. Long story short, I got a phone call a few minutes later, the caller ID said it was my friend. So I answered, and got told off by some guy claiming to be her friend, telling me never to talk to her that way. I asked what way? I hadn't said anything mean, or offensive, and I wasn't trying to be either of those things, just looking out for a friend. again, all they had to say was "NEVER talk to her that way"... so I asked again, "What way?" same response. So I said "Hey, I'm just trying to help a friend avoid being harassed" This time they told me to never talk to her that way again, then they told me off and hung up on me.

I SUSPECT her "friend" was most likely her roommate's friend who was hanging out in the room and saw me use the term "rabid left wing nutjobs with nothing better to do than harass Bush supporters" and took offense, so they grabbed her phone and decided to harass me... oh well, I guess some people are just jerks, and they're going to be jerk's no matter what. Now they've got me thinking about starting on the beer already!

I have heard on local radio show here in Pittsburgh that Republicans who were on the rolls for the primary suddenly werent for this election.

Also, EVERY PRESIDENTIAL election there are reports of Republicans trying to register, sending it in in PLENTY of time, but when they get there they are not on the rolls.

Doesnt seem to happen to mant Democrats though...imagine that.

U.S. stocks jarred by early call favoring Kerry

Tuesday November 2, 3:41 pm ET
By Mark Cotton

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- U.S. stocks staged a sharp reversal Tuesday, with blue chips sliding into negative territory and the Nasdaq paring gains amid reports that John Kerry is putting in a strong early showing at the polls.

111 johnx_uncensored  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:51:43am

The Kingdom of Fear is undoubtedly in honor of Hunter S. Thompson. I like Hunter S. Thompson (Dr. Gonzo) quite alot.

Polling places should be non-partisan. (not to suggest that those are wholey partisan images or anything...)

I know of one libertarian who wasn't allowed to wear a Badnarik shirt.

112 Luigi  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:52:20am

Well, the stock market started totally tanking at about the exact moment the exit polling turned to Kerry.

113 BPP  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:53:45am

I agree - totally outrageous.

114 leo (dissident view from Berlin)  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:56:20am

Imagine for a moment picture of a hanging in Iran, a beheading in Saudi Arabia, a stoning in Nigeria, a crucifixion in Sudan or any other strong image depicting a current type of Islamic barbarianism explained with the caption "sHaria" - the OSCE observers would all go haywire and Kofi Annan would call a press converence to deplore the attempt of stealing of the election.

And that even though this election is decisive for whether Sharia will be on the march in the future or not, not for whether the US will commit military intelligence human rights abuses in the future or not.

Here's the source of these posters (here's more)

Click on the poster to see all the details: Near the word Iraq there is a handgrenade. This puts it beyong being a mere criticism of military intelligence human rights abuses. This is on the same moral level as Hezbollah using a rifle as its logo on its flag.

115 Smapty  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:58:13am

L@@k at that DOW tank!

Man O' Man... you could've made alot of money selling the market short if you knew in advance about the exit polls.

116 Cooper4Prez  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:58:51am

Ringo (#12),

I love that frumpy looking woman sitting by the voting booth with the big frown on her face.

... You sure that's a woman??

117 will_not_back_down  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 10:59:44am

Unbelievable. I'm lost for words. What comes to mind I thought there was supposed to be one from each party at the polling places as the norm. If they had been day for early voting or prep work and were not there than that is a different story. If they showed up this morning and I was there they would have been ripped down. NO MATERIAL WHATSOEVER is SUPPOSED TO BE INSIDE THE POLLING AREA as far as I know.

Some in NY take action please. Call someone and keep calling non-stop.

118 jillosophy  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 11:03:10am

In the words of Albert Einstein:

GREAT SPIRITS HAVE ALWAYS ENOUNTERED VIOLENT OPPOSITION FROM MEDIOCRE MINDS.

Need I say more?

119 Cooper4Prez  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 11:07:00am

Will (#117),

What comes to mind I thought there was supposed to be one from each party at the polling places as the norm

Yes. There's one from the Socialist party and one from the Ba'athist party... So what's the problem?? :P

And I implore everyone to pay NO ATTENTION to exit polls, early results, or any of that horse crap. They're going to go back and forth several times throughout the day (and will vary depending on country, etc.).

Just go vote and chill for about another 7 hours (and post at LGF, of course)!

Manhattan Lizards, you need to all get to get together and march in there and rip them off the wall. I'm guessing then the MSM wll pay attention.

121 jillosophy  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 11:09:24am

I called the NYC board of elections - they are not answering the phones. just a recording, stating so.

We need Bush, although it would be fun (in a morbid sort of way) to watch the Dems get what they deserve.

Soon I'll be off work (like most Bush voters) and will be eagerly heading to the polls here in NYC!!!

123 Irene NYC  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 11:11:26am

Yeah, New York City! Gotta love it.

Similar crap at my polling place in Manhattan (Theatre for the New City) and I took pictures too.

Lovely stickers everywhere with things like:

ATTENTION REPUBLICANS
GO FUCK YOURSELVES

Three American flags on the wall where the stars are, say, B-52 bombers and silhouettes of dead people. You know, typical agitprop.

Some 5 feet from the two policemen "guarding" the integrity of the polling place was a woman wearing a KERRY t-shirt. Hey! No problemo!

Unable to reach the Board of Elections to ask about this, I did manage to speak with the League of Women Voters. They confirmed that they too couldn't get in touch with the Board of Elections.

{sigh}

New York, New York, it's a wonderful town...

124 moonsbreath  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 11:11:54am

Of course they have those pics up, they have to make bin Laden feel like he's at home when he votes for sKerry.

Why can't the people who hate this country just leave and let everyone else who love this country live in peace? I mean, these are the people who care about peace, right?

I live on the UWS of Manhattan (very liberal) although it really doesn't matter what side of town you live in, it's all Democratic. And that never bothered me until they became such non -thinking, self-serving heathens. It was not like that when I was growing up. I grew up in California, always was proud to be liberal (laid back, live and let live, tolerant, benign, cool, enlightened) - but not so much anymore. 9/11 changed it all for me.
But it is a disgrace that what used to be the Compassionate Party is now the Anarchistic Fascist Party. I am embarrassed.

130 Renna  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 11:25:17am

I know it is trifling, but I'll say again that for the first time voting in 20 years, the poll workers today made me remove my button.

And then there's this.

But poll officials stopped her because of a T-shirt and cap.

The 31-year-old McWhorter was wearing clothing from her employer, "Bush Meter Reading."

County elections coordinator Hooper Penuel said the officer was simply trying to follow the rules.

State law bans campaign literature or advertising inside the polling place or within 100 feet of the boundary line.

The kicker?

In her words -- "I wouldn't vote for Bush anyway."
131 Fight The Hypocrisy  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 11:29:28am

I'll say it again to the people that live near these places, go down there and raise a ruckus.

Here in NH after I voted, there was this woman lurking outside the back door wearing a NO W button and a Kerry Edwards sticker taking an Exit poll. A typical hideous wacko (are there any other kind?)

I notified the poll monitor because I felt that it was intimidating when they get up in your face like they do.
I'm sure her exit poll will be unbiased HAHAHAHAHA

134 kjackman  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 11:55:38am

So where the hell are all these pompous, solemn "international observers" we've been hearing about? Hey, you self-righteous morons, wherever you are: OBSERVE THIS!

135 Sihlus  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 11:57:03am

It's reports like these that remind me how lucky I am to be living in a small Southern Indiana town.

One of the clerks at my polling place is my neighbor down the street, and the other is in my Sunday School Class. Her husband, the poll judge, is a member of my lodge. One of the watchers lives about two blocks away, and I served on a jury with the other one a few years ago. All one big happy family.

You city folks have my sincere sympathy. Hang in there, and Illegitimi Non Carborundum.

141 MichelefromLA  Tue, Nov 2, 2004 12:34:45pm

I voted earlier near my home in the 'burbs of L.A. What exactly is a provisional ballot? A guy about 19 years old, dressed like a gang member - baggy shorts, shaved head...mumbled incoherently when he spoke, handed in a provisional ballot and had to write his name in on the list.

On another post, someone was worried that moveon.org types could be working with the ballots, which made me wonder...whenever I've voted before the ballot workers are really old people, but today the young women working looked like they were in their early twenties.

I dunno...I'm getting nervous. I don't know who to trust anymore.

#141 my post -

Oh - also, while I was voting an old woman standing in line was yelling to everyone about how Bush lied. I wanted to tell her to keep her toothless trap shut, but decided against it. But, it goes to show how the media has kept the citizens ignorant enough to rant stupidity out in a public voting place and not even know they're ignorant fools.

First of all it's to bad you can not arest the whole lot of them and it looks like they took the low road (OOP'S! no roads in NY NY) below the subway.

A Cop in front with a tommy gun! How many voters (Demo's) turned around in fear of the cop's because their pic is on the Post Office walls?

Smug Monkey I'm here in the Ozark's. What in the hell is a kos? Space Pirate a troll? (GASP!) At least he voted for Pres. Bush just like I did a few minutes ago.

Why should we all cry at midnight that's when all votes are counted again, and again, and again then the Lawyers chose for us again like back in 2000. Hey it's ok because there are a lot of sheeple in this country.

I understand investigative journalist Bev Harris has uncovered about the possibility that voting tallies could be tampered with by computer hackers. Any E-Voters out there?

hmmm maybe Michael Moore-on IS good for something.

Got this right off his site: "if anyone tries to stop you from voting...CALL 1-866-OUR-VOTE a non-partisan hotline"

you can also:

"Send voting photos to photos@michaelmoore.com"

Something tells me Mr. Moore-on won't be calling up his 10,000 lawyers for this infraction...but...you never know.

OT-- the best thread for this? Israel Destroys Bomber's Home

Per AP

NABLUS, West Bank — The Israeli army destroyed the home of a teenage suicide bomber Tuesday despite his mother's public and impassioned criticism of the group that sent her son on the deadly mission.

...

After the demolition, the bomber's mother, Samira Abdullah (search), backed off her criticism of her sons' handlers, saying her anger had subsided and praising the teenager as a hero.

All of which leads me to say that the "impassioned criticism" of the mother was so much taqqiyah and kitman. She was trying to save her house and somewhat disarranged by the death of her child -- but at bottom, she was trying to say whatever would profit her the most at that moment.

Handed out sample Repub ballots in Alexandria, VA today from 10:15 to 2:30 at a new polling place in ardent Dem/union/public housing territory. No one had a problem with obese & sullen looking bodies voting while plastered with KerryEdwards & Jim Moran bumper stickers. One guy wouldn't accept a ballot because he wasn't allowed to vote (former fellon?). Kerry turf, baby!

At 2 pm a Voter Protecting Team lawyer set up her little table next to the Dem activists to take pre-emptive action against any nice well-spoken Repubs who might offend by thanking people of all persuasions for voting!

" So what's the deal with these electronic voting machines? Is there really no paper trail? What happens in a recount?"
depends on what party you belong to, if a dem, you hit start, run file "cmd" then type format c:*.* and claim that some republicans came in and messed with the computer. Otherwise you tap into the memory of the voting machine and retabulate the votes. Just think when you use an atm and do not get a reciept, your account is still debited. But I guess when you grasp at straws...

I laugh at the left. I told my wife tonight, that if I were to follow a liberal democrat around for four years, with both middle fingers in his grill and say, "Fuck you, Fuck . . .you!" for four years, he'd be getting off light. These people made up rules, bought the media, made crap up, stacked the deck, lied, shreiked for four years. They deserve every snear and, "Fuck off!" they get.

 Frank says:

There were 45 men in the jail cell, the toilet and shower had never been cleaned, the temperature was 110 degrees so you couldn't sleep night or day, there were roaches in the oatmeal, sadistic guards, and everything that was nice. -- Zappa 1969 interview. This had happened during the days of Studio Z in Cucamonga (1963). Frank was released on bail (his father took out a bank loan to pay for it). Frank had been busted for "conspiracy to commit pornography," after making a silly recording of suggestive sexual sounds (giggling edited out) for someone who had asked him to provide a "special" tape recording for a stag night. That someone turned out to be Detective Willis of the San Bernadino Vice Squad. Their conversation was recorded by a hidden microphone and this was used as evidence at Zappa's trial.
