Heroism and Cowardice

Thu, Dec 16, 2004 at 1:22:15 pm PST

Mainstream media are just not interested in stories like this, and we are a poorer nation because of it: Hero in Fallujah. (Hat tip: Young Pundit.)

On the morning of November 15, 2004, the men of 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines awoke before sunrise and continued what they had been doing for seven days previously - cleansing the city of Fallujah of terrorists house by house.

At the fourth house they encountered that morning the Marines kicked in the door and “cleared” the front rooms, but then noticed a locked door off to the side that required inspection. Sgt. Rafael Peralta threw open the closed door, but behind it were three terrorists with AK-47s. Peralta was hit in the head and chest with multiple shots at close range.

Peralta’s fellow Marines had to step over his body to continue the shootout with the terrorists. As the firefight raged on, a “yellow, foreign-made, oval-shaped grenade,” as Lance Corporal Travis Kaemmerer described it, rolled into the room where they were all standing and came to a stop near Peralta’s body.

But Sgt. Rafael Peralta wasn’t dead - yet. This young immigrant of 25 years, who enlisted in the Marines when he received his green card, who volunteered for the front line duty in Fallujah, had one last act of heroism in him.

Sgt. Rafael Peralta was the polar opposite of Pablo Paredes, the Petty Officer who turned his back on his shipmates and mocked his commander in chief. Peralta was proud to serve his adopted country. In his parent’s home, on his bedroom walls hung only three items - a copy of the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights and his boot camp graduation certificate. Before he set out for Fallujah, he wrote to his 14-year old brother, “be proud of me, bro...and be proud of being an American.”

Not only can Rafael’s family be proud of him, but his fellow Marines are alive because of him. As Sgt. Rafael Peralta lay near death on the floor of a Fallujah terrorist hideout, he spotted the yellow grenade that had rolled next to his near-lifeless body. Once detonated, it would take out the rest of Peralta’s squad. To save his fellow Marines, Peralta reached out, grabbed the grenade, and tucked it under his abdomen where it exploded.

“Most of the Marines in the house were in the immediate area of the grenade,” Cpl. Kaemmerer said. “We will never forget the second chance at life that Sgt. Peralta gave us.”

Contrast the heroism and selflessness of Sgt. Peralta with this despicable post from Markos “Screw Them” Zuniga, exploiting the deaths of soldiers and the grief of their families to advance his cowardly anti-war agenda. What a creep.

The courage and self-sacrifice of Sgt. Peralta give me chills. May his memory be honored.

If you don't mind, I'll skip Zuniga just now...

Stories like Sgt. Peralta's are common and the MSM knows it. That's why they are not reported.

They prefer creeps like Zuniga.

Disgusting.

Young woman takes precepts to heart, converts to Islam

A young woman with a pink head scarf and blue eyes doesn't speak during a Quran study group at the Islamic Society of Michiana.

She just smiles and nods intently as the other three women in the group discuss the Quran, capping most of their English sentences with the Arabic phrase "Insha-Allah," which literally means "if God wills it."

This quiet woman is 21-year-old Brandy Korman. But soon she will be Zahra Abaza. In the spring, Korman converted to Islam, then married a Muslim from Egypt.

But she doesn't speak Arabic. And her husband's suggestion that they move to Medina, a holy city in Saudi Arabia, makes her especially nervous.

"Just the stuff you hear on the news, you know, it's kind of scary," she says. "And most of the women there are completely covered from head to toe, and that would be extremely different for me since I am just now starting to wear hijab."

Funny- reading that KOS commentary, I cant help but pick up a sense of , I dont know, sick pleasure, or enjoyment over the news of dead soldiers. Its almost like gloating.

Dead soldiers are nothing but pawns for their pathetic little agenda. WHere is the sympathy for KIAs from Afghanistan? From the SS Cole? From Khobar Towers? From the marine barracks in Beirut?

Those deaths are somehow less tragic? Why, because they didnt occur in the context of their little pet greivances?

The reasoning is real deep, though. Deep as a puddle of piss. Lets see if I can follow it...

Soldiers have been killed in this war.

Their families are devastated and traumatized.

Therefore, this war is "so immoral and illegal".

13 Capt. Queeg  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 11:31:58am

To the MSM this kind of 'corny' heroism only happens in the movies. The only heroism that can exist for them is in the context of oppressor vs. oppressed and victim vs. abuser.

God Speed Marine,

Semper Fi

OT (sort of)

Matthias Döpfner, Chief Executive of German publisher Axel Springer AG, has written a blistering attack in the daily WELT against the cowardice of Europe in the face of the Islamic threat. Hartmut Lau translated the article for us.

A few days ago Henryk M. Broder wrote in Welt am Sonntag, "Europe - your family name is appeasement." It's a phrase you can't get out of your head because it's so terribly true. Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives as England and France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed that Hitler had to be fought, not bound to agreements.

Appeasement stabilized communism in the Soviet Union and East Germany in that part of Europe where inhuman, suppressive governments were glorified as the ideologically correct alternative to all other possibilities. Appeasement crippled Europe when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo and we Europeans debated and debated until the Americans came in and did our work for us.

Rather than protecting democracy in the Middle East, European appeasement, camouflaged behind the fuzzy word "equidistance," now countenances suicide bombings in Israel by fundamentalist Palestinians. Appeasement generates a mentality that allows Europe to ignore 300,000 victims of Saddam's torture and murder machinery and, motivated by the self-righteousness of the peace-movement, to issue bad grades to George Bush.

A particularly grotesque form of appeasement is reacting to the escalating violence by Islamic fundamentalists in Holland and elsewhere by suggesting that we should really have a Muslim holiday in Germany.

What else has to happen before the European public and its political leadership get it? There is a sort of crusade underway, an especially perfidious crusade consisting of systematic attacks by fanatic Muslims, focused on civilians and directed against our free, open Western societies. It is a conflict that will most likely last longer than the great military conflicts of the last century-a conflict conducted by an enemy that cannot be tamed by tolerance and accommodation but only spurred on by such gestures, which will be mistaken for signs of weakness.

Two recent American presidents had the courage needed for anti-appeasement: Reagan and Bush. Reagan ended the Cold War and Bush, supported only by the social democrat Blair acting on moral conviction, recognized the danger in the Islamic fight against democracy. His place in history will have to be evaluated after a number of years have passed.

In the meantime, Europe sits back with charismatic self-confidence in the multicultural corner instead of defending liberal society's values and being an attractive center of power on the same playing field as the true great powers, America and China. On the contrary-we Europeans present ourselves, in contrast to the intolerant, as world champions in tolerance, which even (Germany's Interior Minister) Otto Schily justifiably criticizes. Why? Because we're so moral? I fear it's more because we're so materialistic.

For his policies, Bush risks the fall of the dollar, huge amounts of additional national debt and a massive and persistent burden on the American economy-because everything is at stake.

While the alleged capitalistic robber barons in American know their priorities, we timidly defend our social welfare systems. Stay out of it! It could get expensive. We'd rather discuss the 35-hour workweek or our dental health plan coverage. Or listen to TV pastors preach about "reaching out to murderers."

These days, Europe reminds me of an elderly aunt who hides her last pieces of jewelry with shaking hands when she notices a robber has broken into a neighbor's house. Europe, thy name is cowardice.

We have fought in every clime and place where we could take a gun
In the snow of far off northern lands and in sunny tropic scenes

Sort of OT
Taking a stand in Europe on radical Islam

There is talk in Germany, Italy and Britain about legislation against terror, and they are implementing rules that harm the sacred freedoms of the individual. The Germans watched on TV as an incendiary speech was delivered by an imam in a Berlin mosque promising that "the German non-believers would burn in hell."

This week, German police raided dozens of apartments and offices attributed to the Al Aqsa organization, which funnels financial donations to Hamas.

The European press is now using the term "clash of civilizations." With 20 million Muslims in Europe, the words of Bassam Tibi, an academic of Syrian origin now residing in Germany, echo. He said there is only one choice: "Either Islam becomes European, or Europe becomes Muslim."

One of the leading Orientalists in the world, Bernard Lewis, wrote recently that based on current demographic trends, by the end of this century there won't be any clash because by then Europe will be Islamic.

38 Truth Junkie  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 11:53:41am

THIS is the American Military at its finest. The unhesitating heroism of our soldiers is a testament to the moral superiority of our soldiers as over against the cowardly actions of the Terrorists.

Cowardly Acts: Hiding in places of worship and using them as ammo dumps and staging areas and firing positions (read: WAR CRIMES);
Not wearing recognizable uniforms (Also a WAR CRIME);
Kidnapping and Murdering unarmed civilians.

And yet THEY invoke the name of their god...

Blessings to the family of this American Hero.
Proud to call him a compatriot.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Jhn 15:13

"None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give God a ransom for him. For the redemption of their life is costly, No payment is ever enough, That he should live on forever, That he should not see corruption. Psalm 49:7-9

Or as it says in the NIV "Who can redeem the life of another, the cost is too great."

I'm fighting back the tears (I can't cry at work).
Great is his reward, and great is our loss. May the LORD of heaven comfort his family.

So you don't like the story so you f*** with the storyteller?

Oliver North is a combat-decorated Marine, best-selling author, founder of a small business, inventor with three U.S. patents, syndicated columnist, former host of the radio’s Common Sense and the host of War Stories on the Fox News Channel, yet claims his most important accomplishment as being "the husband of one and the father of four."

78 reaganite  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 12:16:34pm

Why is it so many immigrants to the US know exactly what they came here for and other "people" who were born here can't get it?

I read a story today about another immigrant from Africa (I can't remember which country, I've only had 6 hours sleep in the last 36). He was wounded in the face and used his medic skills to sew himself up and continued the fight.

Sgt. Rafael Peralta is an American by any definition as well as a hero.

Thanks for posting that. Well worth watching. Loved the music!

Last week, I stopped for a few minutes to explain Chanukah to the three people (Arab and Pakastani immigrants, whom I know pretty well) working at my 7-Eleven (they were aware that it was Chanukah and wanted to know about it). I, a Christian, enjoyed explaining the basics of it to them.

84 thibaud  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 12:18:16pm

Peralta's heroism is inspiring. But no less important-- perhaps more important-- to be reminded of the sheer depravity of Kos and his legions.

It is appalling and deeply disturbing to see the fascist fellow-travellers like Kos take over one of the two major political parties. The threat they pose is at least as great as the external threat. Note that I'm a JFK-Truman hawkish liberal.

Please keep posting the Kos links. Fight decadence. Fight fascism abroad and fellow travelers at home.

I agree with the others -- is there any way we can urge the bestowing of the Medal of Honor? I'm completely ignorant of the process.

My other thought is that if his family are NOT U.S. citizens (I saw mention of a "green card") I, for one, would like to see the President swear his family in as our newest Americans personally. Of course, I'm a friggin' sentimental little sap lizardette, and right now my mascara is running down my damn cheeks...

He didn't have to take the actions he took, but he loved his Brothers too much to see more harm come to them. OOOH-RA Marine!

Soldiers have been killed in this war.

Their families are devastated and traumatized.

Therefore, this war is "so immoral and illegal".

Let's try the flip side:

Some soldiers have been heroes in this war.

Their families are very proud of their service.

Therefore, this war is "moral and legal"

Regardless of how you feel about this war, the means by which soldiers die has nothing to do with it's justification.

You, sir, have absolutely no class. Not an inkling. By your second sentence, you completely dived off the deep end accusing the author of the story of lying in a completely unrelated incident, without discussing any of the events depicted therein. Calling this Marine a hero and then ripping a fellow Marine (which Mr. North is) who tries to tell a difficult story about how that Marine was killed WREAKS of moonbat sh*t and liberal cynicism. Do you want to keep living in a world of double standards?

Clever. Looks like we have a logician in our midst.

Unfortunately, not a moralist.

How about this one:

There were 17 UN Resolutions authorizing use of force in Iraq if Sadaam continued to refuse compliance.

Sadaam continued to refuse compliance after the use of force, authorized by the US congress, Senate, and 17 Security Counsel resolutions was imminent.

Therefore the war is legal.

THis war eliminated a brutal, terrorist supporting dictator and regime, creating hope for democracy and peace for millions of Iraqis.

Therefore this war is moral.

When I first read about Sgt. Peralta (I forget where, but it was soon after Fallujah was pacified), I got a chill down my spine, a lump in my throat, and tears in my eyes. Even my 15 year old son, who can't seem to fathom the idea of even minor self-sacrifice, was simply awed and visibly shaken when I told him about this.

I know I'll never be worthy of this kind of sacrifice, but I vow to never take these sacrifices for granted and to always remember those who made them.

God bless them all - past, present, and future.

149 Catttt  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 12:53:07pm

The story from Marine Corps News

Later that night, while I was thinking about the day’s somber events, Cpl. Richard A. Mason, an infantryman with Headquarters Platoon, who, in the short time I was with the company became a good friend, told me, "You’re still here, don’t forget that. Tell your kids, your grandkids, what Sgt. Peralta did for you and the other Marines today."

As a combat correspondent, this is not only my job, but an honor.

Throughout Operation Al Fajr, we were constantly being told that we were making history, but if the books never mention this battle in the future, I’m sure that the day and the sacrifice that was made, will never be forgotten by the Marines who were there.

The story has a picture of Sgt. Peralta as well as a pic and bio of Lance Cpl. Travis J. Kaemmerer, the combat correspondent who reported the story.

I have never been in the military, but as a student of history, there are countless examples I can point to where the difference in a battle was made by the support elements.

King David recognized this when he said that those who stayed behind and watched the baggage (i.e. the supply troops) would each get an equal share of the reward. I Samuel 30:22, 23

I blogged about this on Monday. I also referenced a piece of sh*t by Harley Sorensen, Deserters Are Heroes.

I'm a former Marine (86-90), and every Marine death saddens me. As for DailyCaustic, I blogged about the left's use of images as well. It really pisses me off to see our military, and their families, used for those America-hating tirades.

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived."

I've never been sure about the first part; we must always mourn who we lose, because they are ours. But he's certainly right in the last bit.

Contrast the heroism and selflessness of Sgt. Peralta with this despicable post from Markos “Screw Them” Zuniga, exploiting the deaths of soldiers and the grief of their families to advance his cowardly anti-war agenda. What a creep.

This is such bullshit. Both prowar and antiwar sides cherry-pick news items to advance their agenda. There is no moral difference between the story of the heroic Marine and the grieving families. Both are valid points to bring up in any discussion about the war.

What pisses me off is the implication that discussion about American casualties is off-limits, as if pointing out the suffering of both soldiers and their families is inappropriate. Sure it shoudn't be the ONLY thing we focus on, but it should be part of the discussion.

from the post:

I wonder how many Americans have even read these documents let alone have them on their BEDROOM wall...

In his parent’s home, on his bedroom walls hung only three items - a copy of the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights and his boot camp graduation certificate. Before he set out for Fallujah, he wrote to his 14-year old brother, “be proud of me, bro...and be proud of being an American.”

as clear an example as their is between what it means to really martyr oneself and the murderous behavior of an Islamofacist homicide murderer which the MSM calls a martyr...

158 He's dead, Jim  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 1:07:22pm

Important to remember about Kos and the likes...it's not depravity, it's propaganda.

The articles are carefully constructed to play upon the beliefs and assumptions of the readership, typically liberally-educated people who, as a result of their "education", have grave doubts about the political economy of America (capitalism), similarly grave doubts about the integrity of our government (esp WRT the national security establishment), and outright vitriolic hatred for the political party that most represents both.

Those beliefs have been carefully engineered by sustained campaign waged by a triad of the media (including Hollywood), liberal colleges, and social/political activist groups such as ACLU, MoveOn, "progressives" etc.

So this propaganda is carefully tailored to play opon those ingrained beliefs to achieve a policy outcome; reduce the ability of the US government to achieve its international policy goals by reducing public support for the war. In the short run, failure in Iraq is the goal. In the long run, the goal is to constrain use-of-force options

My strong suspicion, as I've said many times here, is that this is an elaborately orchestrated, long term campaign being waged against us on behalf of the Marxist intellectual elite of Europe, with the collusion of our homegrown Marxist elite (mostly burnt out Vietnam-era "activists"-turned academics).

That might explain why the far-left politicos driving the Dem slinter groups (MoveOn, etc.) have been so persistent on maintaining their vitriolic position, which does nothing for Democratic unity...they would rather undermine the system overall than temper their position to help win elections; winning elections is not the primary point, undermining the system is.

Am I too far out there?

I've thought of writing a book on the subject; would anyone be interested in reading a book exploring this topic? Just curious.

Are these people at KOS stupid or what? The picture of the injuried American solider with the caption, Does President Bush see these images? is stupid beyond the pale. Anyone who sends men and women into harm's way feels every drop of blood that is shed. To think otherwise is to be totally braindead. I guarantee that nothing is wearing on the President more than the killed and injured in this war.

Those people are not qualifed to shine the boots of people like Sgt. Peralta. These people would not lift a fist or fire a shot in anger if their very lives depended on it. They depend on the Sgt. Peraltas of this country for their very lives. How dare they say anything about this war.

What can one say about the msm. I wish all of America would get a clue as to who they really support and what their agenda is. In the meantime I will keep on doing what I do now and that is: not read newspapers (by the paper or on the internet) and not watch msm on TV (except Fox sometimes, although in their supposed quest to be "fair and balanced" I sometimes think they lean a little left and O'Reilly doesn't seem to have as much balls as he used to, he goes after some people, but doesn't "GO AFTER" them). One day, in a perfect world, all people will see the truth as we bloggers do and the msm will fall.
On the good side: msm newspapers and TV stations do seem to be losing customers, in some cases dramatically!

Yes, I do mean scholarly, like with an introductory exploration of the spectrum of thought (old and new) in political philosophy, examination of all the various iterations the Left has gone through in the past century (give or take), an examination of the topic through the lens of the cold war (especially the nexus between Soviet intelligence the American Left), and of course a carfeul treatment of recent (last 20 years) history with emphasis on the triad I described. What incredible heroism!

Here is a taste of some from days past……

I just had the privilege of meeting this man, now 83 years old last week.

He was first on the beach in Normandy, France and as the German gunners turned their artillery fire point blank onto the invading troops, Sanford Rosen got into some serious trouble, yet manage to distinguish himself.

He told me that the shell that took off his arm did not explode near him but flew by him, amputating his arm

Rosen went on after to war to lobby for and win substantial gains for veterans in housing, medical support and general benefits.

The citation and article below give a taste of what it was like.

Rosen told me that the movie, Saving Private Ryan, was extremely accurate and true to life.

Jewish, his parent immigrants from eastern Europe, he too was fighting for his county and for others’ freedom.

---

Citation

Private First Class Sanford Rosen

Distinguished Service Cross

“For extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy on June 6 1944, in France. Private First Class Rosen disembarked from his landing craft amidst bursts of artillery fire and , with another man, started for the shore carrying a heavy drum of wire. At the first move his comrade was hit and instantly killed. With complete disregard for his safety he rescued the heavy drum of wire from the surf and struggled with it under heavy enemy fire through the shoulder deep water to the beach.

Seconds later another burst of artillery fire shot away his one left arm at the elbow. Unable to lift the drum with his one good arm, he valiantly dragged it the remaining distance, bleeding profusely but never hesitating despite his terrible wound and the intense enemy fire.

This drum of wire so gallantly brought ashore was one of the very first initially landed and was urgently needed.

In so distinguishing himself through his display of personal courage, dauntlessness and devotion to duty, Private First Class Rosen reflects great credibility on himself and on the Armed Forces.”

(reproduced at Fort Jay, New York)

---

From the NY Daily News of 5/29/94

They Were There: History’s Heros

Sanford Rosen, 73, who lives in Floral Park, Queens, was one of the day’s most valiant heroes.

A shell tore off his (correction –left-Ed.) right (sic) arm at the elbow as he waded ashore at Omaha with the 1st Infanty Division-the celebrated Big Red One-and as he lay waiting for medical help, he realized that the German troops were firing from a fortified concrete bunker to his right.

He tried to pull the pins on two hand grenades with his teeth, but could not. Instead he pried the pins off with a metal bar and lobbed the grenades into the German pillbox. The first one missed. The second one wiped out the German gunners.

“I didn’t feel a thing when I lost my arm,” Rosen says. “a medic said, ‘hey you have lost your arm,’ and put a tourniquet on me, it saved my life”

For his heroism under fire, Rosen was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

But the wound ended his days as a musician. A saxophone and clarinet player, he sometimes jammed with big name jazz musicians at the old Savoy Ballroom, which his uncle owned.

It was a day too, for desperate collective acts of courage.

This story brought back 2 distinct memories for me.
The first was an interview I did with my grandfather, an Australian commando in WW2. He said "Country first, unit second". Sgt. Peralta is (unfortunately) a shining example of self sacrifice for his Country and his unit.
The second was when I took my fiance to the USA and visited the Washington war memorial. We stood and stared at (if i remember correctly) the Korean war memorial and some words were burned forever into my memory. For all those who believe what is being done by the United States and her allies is wrong, just remeber these words - "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE"

I am so proud to be an American because Sgt Peralta chose to join us here in America and strengthen our culture; a culture of freedom and prosperity for all, under law. He did it right.

Here's a principle I know to be true:

18 Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection.

19 And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.

20 There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated--

21 And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.

D&C 130: 18-21

Sgt. Peralta has gained much in his life that are benefiting him now and in eternity. What a great example he is to me of love and sacrifice.

Contrast the heroism and selflessness of Sgt. Peralta with this despicable post from Markos “Screw Them” Zuniga

the only "hits" this individual gets from me come from my luger.
'nuff said.

225 Renna  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 2:21:41pm
Both prowar and antiwar sides cherry-pick news items to advance their agenda.

The main error in this statement is the phrase "to advance their agenda." This thread stands accused of saying, "This guy is a hero, thus this particular war is justified," which is not what we are saying.

We are saying, "This guy is a hero." Period.

The war is justified for other reasons. Se TMF #147 for starters. Were this truly an unjust war, the late Sgt's actions would remain heroic. How can anyone not see that?

This Marine is likely to join a very exclusive club indeed:

[Link: www.army.mil...]

I highly recommend spending a little time perusing those.

For example:

TRACY, CHARLES H.

Rank and organization: Sergeant, Company A, 37th Massachusetts Infantry. Place and date: At Spotsylvania, Va., 12 May 1864; At Petersburg, Va., 2 April 1865. Entered service at: Springfield, Mass. Birth: Jewett City, Conn. Date of issue: 19 November 1897. Citation: At the risk of his own life, at Spotsylvania, 12 May 1864, assisted in carrying to a place of safety a wounded and helpless officer. On 2 April 1865, advanced with the pioneers, and, under heavy fire, assisted in removing 2 lines of chevaux_de_frise; was twice wounded but advanced to the third line, where he was again severely wounded, losing a leg.

Or:

*TURNER, WILLIAM B.

Rank and organization: First Lieutenant, U.S. Army 105th Infantry, 27th Division. Place and date: Near Ronssoy, France, 27 September 1918. Entered service at: Garden City, N.Y. Birth: Boston, Mass. G.O. No.: 81, W.D., 1919. Citation: He led a small group of men to the attack, under terrific artillery and machinegun fire, after they had become separated from the rest of the company in the darkness. Single-handed he rushed an enemy machinegun which had suddenly opened fire on his group and killed the crew with his pistol. He then pressed forward to another machinegun post 25 yards away and had killed 1 gunner himself by the time the remainder of his detachment arrived and put the gun out of action. With the utmost bravery he continued to lead his men over 3 lines of hostile trenches, cleaning up each one as they advanced, regardless of the fact that he had been wounded 3 times, and killed several of the enemy in hand-to-hand encounters. After his pistol ammunition was exhausted, this gallant officer seized the rifle of a dead soldier, bayoneted several members of a machinegun crew, and shot the other. Upon reaching the fourth-line trench, which was his objective, 1st Lt. Turner captured it with the 9 men remaining in his group and resisted a hostile counterattack until he was finally surrounded and killed.

Or:

MEAGHER, JOHN

Rank and organization: Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company E, 305th Infantry, 77th Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Ozato, Okinawa, 19 June 1945. Entered service at: Jersey City, N.J. Birth: Jersey City, N.J. G.O. No.: 60, 26 June 1946. Citation: He displayed conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty. In the heat of the fight, he mounted an assault tank, and, with bullets splattering about him, designated targets to the gunner. Seeing an enemy soldier carrying an explosive charge dash for the tank treads, he shouted fire orders to the gunner, leaped from the tank, and bayoneted the charging soldier. Knocked unconscious and his rifle destroyed, he regained consciousness, secured a machinegun from the tank, and began a furious 1-man assault on the enemy. Firing from his hip, moving through vicious crossfire that ripped through his clothing, he charged the nearest pillbox, killing 6. Going on amid the hail of bullets and grenades, he dashed for a second enemy gun, running out of ammunition just as he reached the position. He grasped his empty gun by the barrel and in a violent onslaught killed the crew. By his fearless assaults T/Sgt. Meagher single-handedly broke the enemy resistance, enabling his platoon to take its objective and continue the advance.

There are hundreds more. Humbling indeed.

I play tennis. Sometimes you just know the point is over. No further running or racquet motion required. It's helped me to learn in life that sometimes things are just done and you need to let them go.

In his final moments this young man was brave enough to realize this about his life...

The Marine's Hymn

From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli,
We will fight out country's battles
In the air, on land and sea.
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean.
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.

Our flag's unfurl'd to ev'ry breeze
From dawn to setting sun
We have fought in ev'ry clime and place
Where we could take a gun.
In the snow of far off northern lands,
And in sunny tropic scenes,
You will find us always on the job -
The United States Marines.

Here's health to you and to our corps,
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life,
And never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven's scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.

Sgt. Rafael Peralta, you are now guarding the streets "on Heaven's scenes".

Do you understand how hard it is to type with tears falling on the keyboard?

The high school band my 3 oldest daughters were members of had an ongoing relationship with the Marine Corps Bands out of Pendleton and San Diego. The kids would take a trip to visit them, sitting in on rehearsals and playing with them. Once a year, in the spring, the Marine Corps Band would come up and put on a joint show with our band "Music Americana"... They'd come up early and we Band Booster parents would have our BBQ's set up and cook up a storm to feed these fine young men and women. Then they'd rehearse with the kids and then perform to a standing room only crowd. You never heard such applause, whooping and foot stomping. We handed out little US flags to every audience member and what a sight to see everyone waving them, crying when the band would play a medly of all the service branch songs and then go into the finale of Stars & Stripes forever.

Oh...geez... I'm leaking again...

244 1 US Sheeple  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 3:33:53pm

When you read the LLL rants, it is obvious that we cannot afford them anymore. If anyone has the time, read about France in 1939-1940 and you will see how the Loonie Left obstructed the French Govt and aided and abbetted the Greman take over. The correlation here is that the Leftists did not care a whit about their own country which is very similar to the libs right here in this country. If the people of this country do not wake up and force the Govt to lock up the ACLU plus the so called peace niks that oppose anything that helps the US, then we will soon reap the reward of our folley. The MSM is also aiding and abbetting the enemies of this country by publishing and airing what they know to be lies! If you do not think this weakens the US, over time, just refer to the activities of the libs (socialists) in the countries taken over by Germany prior to WWII. The same line was spouted then: "if we leave them alone, they will leave us alone." And how did those countries come out? If we are unprepared due to political correctness and the opposition of the libs, we will have an attack that will be 10X greater than 9/11. You can make book on it!

We carried him back to our rally point and upon returning were told that the other Marines who went to support us encountered and killed the three insurgents from inside the house.

Not much comfort but at least we know that the three turds who took this great American hero's life have been unceremoniously kicked off the planet by the United States Marine Corps.

#158 He's dead, Jim  12/16/2004 03:07PM PST

Important to remember about Kos and the likes...it's not depravity, it's propaganda.

Am I too far out there?

I think you're to far out there on the "elaborately orchestrated" stand. I would say its more distributed in nature; but you are correct that it is Marxist propaganda. The Soviets admitted to actively undermining the foundation of Western Civilization. Do a google on "communist goals congressional record" and check out the top link.

My daughter's entire class was asked to sign a card today for a soldier serving in Iraq. All of the class wrote "come home soon" or "stay safe."
My daughter wrote: "Thank you and I'm proud of you."
I was proud of her for writing that.
She attends a military academy. She was the only one who thought to say thanks and she was teased for saying that we should encourage our soldiers or we could discourage them and thus eventually lose the war.

Thank you Sgt. Peralta. We're proud of you and of all your fellow soliders who you also were so proud of. It's a blessing to this nation that it attracts that quality of man.

There's some hard reading there. I don't know about you, but the citations, like Sgt. Peralta's story, leave me choked up.

Where do we get such men? When there is a need, they are always there. That Providence is pleased to continue to bless this Nation with such as these is a sign that fills me with hope. The same fact should fill our adversaries with a terrible fear.

258 Red_CA_Island  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 4:49:36pm

Today is the 60th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Bulge during WWII. From the ensuing month came several Congressional Medals of Honor. To read the citations is to come to understand the very concept of "duty, honor, country."

Sgt. Peralta surely belongs among this long and hallowed line of true American heroes. He like so many others before him will remain forever young because he placed the pursuit of liberty ahead of his own life.

God Bless You, Sgt. Peralta. May you truly rest in peace and be forever enshrined in the memory of a grateful nation

what I mean by elaborately is long term, far reaching and pervasive throughout many elements of society. I don't mean some high council of Marxists is flipping the switches centrally. Agree it would be decentralized.

I do think, however, that modern info technology has made things alot easier for them. Did you know that the day after the 60 minutes episode on Abu Ghraib, street vendors in Baghdad were selling DVDs of the raw images (not the episode, but a copy of the pictures themselves.) There is no way that was anything other than intentional (by who, your guess).

#252 JohnCV

I never need the excuse of another thread to work in a little commentary on this topic; unfortunately can't stay long tonight. I will make this observation, though:

For me, Marx as a critic of capitalism is far more convincing than Marx as an economist and social revolutionary. Greed can make people do ugly things; Marx and I would agree on that.

But Marx fundamentally missed the point that the reason capitalism is (up to now) the best system for ensuring a cooperative, free society is that self-maximizing behavior (greed) is hard-wired into the brain of humans. Harness that greed (incentivize cooperation) and you get a productive, peaceful society.

Marx thought (implicitly) that maximizing behavior could be unlearned. (And though Marx would have disagreed with the methods used, this is reflected by the totalitarian police state and reeducation camps of the USSR, China, Cuba).

The idea of a society where everyone gets a perfectly equal share will never, ever happen...you can't remove that circuit from the brain. Plus, that kind of society encourages free-riding like you wouldn't believe...ask the Europeans! (paid vacations for the unemployed...believe it!)

The LLL have been sold on the critique, which as I said is inherently an accurate one, but have been convinced of the need for a different solution by guile and disinformation, thanks to the triad mentioned above. It is not a coincidence that the MSM spends every waking minute spinning or reframing or cherrypicking an issue to make some part of our goverment or some big business look bad.

Look at the current war being raged against the pharmaceutical industry right now...editorials on the FDA, Lancet articles slamming Vioxx timed to coincide with an FDA whistleblower's testmony before Congress, infomercials on "the drug industry doesn't want to heal you". No sense of balance whatsoever on how much good the drug industry has done for the US/world. The agenda is not fixing bad behavior, it is to undermine and tear-down.

Alright, enough from me. Night all.

(And yes, the nic is trek-inspired, but I'm not a trekkie, just someone who grew up watching and always liked the phrase.)

265 Blue Falcon  Thu, Dec 16, 2004 5:12:24pm

This guy deserves the Medal of Honor and his family should have some kind of fund established for him. It deeply saddens me that immigrants like Peralta can work so hard and do so much for the country and still get crapped on by the left, as they are only a minority to exploit for political gain to those jerks. It absolutely sickens me to see guys like this pay the ultimate price for everyones' freedom when some spoiled identity lacking native brat takes great pleasure to abusing that freedom to slander their own country just "cuz we can and its kewl".
The idiots protesting freedom in the streets and coddlling dictators deserve to be deported to every hellhole on earth, while people like Peralta should be given citizenship. Trade the useful idiots to despots that could use them, and in turn recieve all the good people suffering under the despots. Then everyone deserving and disiring freedom would have it, and all the self hating losers would have the evil uncle they've always wanted to slap them around. *Sigh*

The actions he took on his last day are worhty of our nations highest honor , the Congressional Medal of Honor and I hope that he does get the medal he so justly earned by saving the men he led into battle.

No finer example of what the Marine Corps stands for can be found. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family in this time of sorrow. Please know that the sacrifice he made did not go without notice and is greatly appreciated by this fellow citizen.

It disgusts me to no end that the Communists have made such huge inroads into American society and media that the sacrifice and sheer guts he and other troops have displayed go largely unnoticed by most of the country. I'm awed and humbled by what our armed forces are doing, and so long as I draw breath I will do all I can to see that they receive the honor and thanks that they deserve. They won't come home to what my dad faced returning from his tours in Vietnam, fighting overseas to prevent the spread of Communism while the Reds were infiltrating and corrupting the United States. Agreed message sent to my outgoing Congressman with a request to forward to the incoming. This is the very least we can do.

Each time a story like this appears, we must thank a merciful God that we are not defended by moonbats. And the MSM wonders why they have become irrevelant and the LLLs try to "reframe" their message so it "resonates" with real people.

begin: rant Gimmeabreak

We should copy Charles posting -- of course we'll give credit and attribution (no plagarists here) *GRIN* -- and send it to every MSM letter to the editor address we can find.
/rant

Thank you all. We need more postings like this. It really draws out what makes our country great -- moonbats noticed and excluded.

Dear God, where do we get such men from?

May his family find peace in knowing they loved and were loved by such a fine man.

America has been blessed with a seemingly unending stream of warriors capable of great violence against evil and great acts of generosity and kindness in service to their comrades and countrymen. In their wake they leave not despair and conquest but hope and freedom.

Sgt. Rafael Peralta has earned his eternal place on the list of America's honored warriors.

Charles,

Anyone who is a fan of your site knows KOS is a dilussional sleazebag who is an unknowing (willing) tool of collective thinking.

What I plead for you to stop doing is giving this man credit for his existance as frequently as you do. Your attemptingt to confront him on his every move makes him appear to your equal opposiste but this is far from the truth. What you are doing is at a much higher lever than KOS can even percieve. Which is the fuel of his hatred and disgust for humans in general and America. Please consider carefully when you post about this tool.

God bless Sgt. Rafael Peralta and may his family find comfort.

I suggest we link to this story far and wide so the world knows about Sgt. Rafael Peralta and his amazing act of selfless courage. I forwarded the story to a friend's site who posted it. Spread the word people. Post a link to the LGF story or the original story from Human Events Online everywhere you can.

Holy muthafuckin' shit

I had never read anything like that

There is nothing to fear if men like Rafael Peralta are serving in the military

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." --George S. Patton

So today a grateful nation thanks God that Sgt. Rafael Paralta, USMC, has indeed lived a full measure.

Sergeant Peralta certainly does deserve to be recognized for his selfless service. Remember, this service was not only on behalf of his fellow marines, but also for the Iraqis and Americans back home. Heroes like Sergeant Peralta are what is best about the human race. Unfortunately, he probably won’t get the CMH. Right now, the CMH is not an authorized medal for service in Operation Iraqi Freedom. More than likely, he’ll receive a Silver Star and Purple Heart (Posthumously) for his actions.

Something we should all realize is that actions such as these are common place in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our military is full of the ‘noble and great ones’.

God_Bless this great heroe's soul.
It brings me sadness and pride, to have known of these story.
Thanks LGF.
If I could only meet the requirements to join the marines, I would serve with honor.
