Related to the Bombing aftermath . . .

I'm trying to notify other Bloggers of a request made by the UK Police not to publish pictures obtained by ABC News of unexploded bombs discovered in a car in Luton. It can interfere with or damage their investigation into the bombing.

My post with their request and source is below.

Can you imagine the reaction of CAIR is this was done on the New York subway? They would turn into apoplectic purple people eaters at the very suggestion.

25 Carl in Jerusalem  Wed, Jul 27, 2005 8:29:23pm

Makes sense to me.

*****

This is slightly OT but since there is no open or dead thread yet....

I just wrote a letter to the editor to my local newspaper, the Jerusalem Post. Not much new there - I do that all the time. But I wanted to share it with you even if it's not published because I think there's a lesson here in how the MSM manipulates the news by giving us less than full disclosure. I cc'ed Charles on the letter, and he can choose to do whatever he wants with it:

******

Sirs,

The report by the "US-based Strategic Assessments Initiative," which found that the Palestinian security forces are "insufficiently armed," (PA plans next move in Gaza after pullout, July 28) allows the Palestinians to blame Israel - again - for their own shortcomings.

If Abu Mazen would disarm the terrorist groups as he has committed himself to doing, the Palestinians would have more than sufficient arms to police the Palestinian Authority.

It's time for the world to stop letting the Palestinians get away with blaming Israel and to make them accountable for their own actions. The Strategic Assessments Initiative report is a step backwards from accountability.

-- Carl
Jerusalem

P.S. This is too long a topic for a 500-word letter to the editor but if you look at SAI's web site, SAI is anything but the neutral organization you imply that it is. I'm cc'ing Caroline Glick on this in the hope that she might build on it for a future column. But here are two examples:

Amjad Atallah

Amjad Atallah is founder and President of Strategic Assessments Initiative, a not-for-profit organization committed to providing legal and policy assistance to parties involved in negotiations in conflict and postconflict situations....

For the past three years before Mr. Atallah founded SAI, he advised the Palestinian negotiating team, and later Palestinian Prime Minister Abbas’ office, in peace negotiations with Israel on the issues of international borders, security, and constitutional issues. He was also responsible for liaising with US government officials in Washington, D.C. on these issues. He was responsible for coordinating Palestinian cooperation with the Sharm El-Sheikh Fact Finding Committee (the Mitchell Commission), the General Zinni and Secretary of State Powell missions, and was heavily involved in discussions pertaining to the Quartet “Roadmap”, including monitoring mechanisms and other forms of third party involvement. Mr. Atallah lived and worked in Ramallah, in the Occupied West Bank, for two years during the recent conflict and has recently been stationed in Washington, D.C.

Jarat Chopra

Jarat Chopra was "Legal Counsel for Palestine, International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on Legal Consequences of the Construction of a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Dec 2003-Mar 2004)."

*****

Most of the other members of SAI's "Board of Directors" have similar backgrounds. I did not see a single name there that I recognized as having any positive connection with Israel.

SAI is clearly a "pro-Palestinian" organization with an agenda. Presenting their report as fair and unbiased (and I know you weren't the only ones who did it - there was a similar article in the New York Times) is misleading. But it would take a much longer article than a letter to the editor to correct the misimpression.

******

Comments anyone?

On a different subject: Polygamy no fun, admits Ethiopian

An Ethiopian man with 11 wives and 77 children is urging people not to follow his example and is giving advice on family planning and contraception.

After seeing his fortune disappear under the competing demands of his enormous family, Ayattu Nure, 56, even urges people not to get married.

"I want my children to be farmers but I have no land, I want them to go to school but I have no money," he says.

But his eldest son has not heeded Mr Ayattu's advice and he has three wives........

Take a look at him...he looks so old and soooo tired! :)

We'll never know..those robes cover everything...when he wears them!

In the 'this is totally insane' category, after the London bombings, we see this: Anger as Shankill bomber is released

One of the most notorious IRA killers of the Northern Ireland troubles was released from prison last night in a move designed to appease republicans on the eve of an expected statement from the terrorist groups.

Sean Kelly, the Shankill bomber who killed nine innocent people in 1993 when he blew up a fishmongers, walked out of prison as the horse-trading leading up to the IRA statement began in earnest.

IRA killer Sean Kelly on his release on licence in July 2000
Kelly's original sentence had been cut short when he was one of the prisoners released on licence as part of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

Last month, he was re-arrested on the orders of Peter Hain, the Northern Ireland Secretary, because it was suspected that he had become involved in terrorism once more.

His incarceration angered republicans, who have campaigned for him to be set free while the British and Irish Governments waited for the IRA's response to Gerry Adams's call for an end to the armed struggle.

But the release, which appeared to have taken place without being referred to the Sentence Review Commission, outraged unionists who claimed that it had been choreographed to pave the way for the IRA's declaration, expected today.

Jeffrey Donaldson, an MP for Ian Paisley's Democratic Unionist Party, said: "This was clearly and purely politically motivated by the Secretary of State who had reason to return Kelly to prison a few weeks ago.

"What then has changed? It's because the IRA is expected to make a statement.....

What will they do when they have all 4 or 5 failed homicide bombers in custody, give them a reality TV show?

Haven't they learned anything?

I am assured that this is a real image, not a Photoshop remix.

I'm surprised no one has addressed the obvious here. It may not be a Photoshop job, but there's no reassurance that the sign itself wasn't fake to begin with. The following phrase especially set off my alarm bells:

or look a bit foreign

C'mon, think about it: would an official London Underground notice say "look a bit foreign." No way. That's absurd. The multi-culti PC euphemism police would simply never allow such a phrase in an official notice.

Since this was sent to Charles presumably by an anti-idiotarian, one should probably assume that the person who took the picture is not the same person who made the sign.

Instead, my theory is:

1. A British moonbat pilfered or somehow copied a blank official London Underground notice sheet.

2. As a "think-I'm-so-clever" piece of hoaxery, created a fake sign that purported to be from the LU management.

3. The hoaxer then surreptitiously placed the fake sign in a real tube station where passengers could see it.

4. Charles' friend-of-a-friend saw the sign and in all innocence thought it was real and took a picture.

5. The picture gets sent to Charles and posted here.

I have extremely attuned hoax-detecting skills, and can spot a fake from a mile off. The tone of the writing of this notice, and the understated left-slanted humor, is exactly the kind of thing a British moonbat would come up with.

Of course, I may be proven to be wrong, but until I see any additional evidence, I'm sticking by my theory. (If the LU later apologizes about the sign, naturally I'll abandon my notion. But for now I doubt that will happen.)

You are not a terrorist, and I would never equate anyone who is Irish with the IRA; this is very different than what is going on with the cult of islam..they are a threat to the world. BTW, I was caught up in an IRA raid in London. That is why, after 7/07, and last week, it is such a shock to see this happen. It sends an awful message to the homicide bombers in training and their accomplices.

I have a feeling that the Catholics in Ulster are not pleased, either.

I don't find this at all funny, given that a person who was entirely innocent, had broken no laws and done nothing wrong was tackeld by plainclothes policemen and shot several times in the back of the head while he was being restrained on the ground. The review may well determine that the officers acted appropriately, but the way some people are making light of shooting foreign-looking people is just sick, in my opinion.

The duty and responsibility of Police Officers is to protect the citizens.

The man should have stopped for the officers. He should have stopped.

If he had been a bomb carrying terrorist -- and they hadn't shot him . . . then you would be wondering why the officers didn't use deadly force -- and crying because the terrorist had killed innocent people.

He should have stopped.

The officers did the right thing.

Hold a ballpoint pen in your hand like it was an icepick, with the button under your thumb. Tell me, just how much freedom of movement do you need to click it? Now, imagine that it was a detonator. Given what the cops in the Tube knew at the time, that this guy (a) had come from a building under surveillance, (b) was dressed inapropriately for the weather in clothes suitable for concealing a bomb vest, then (c) ran when the cops ID themselves & ordered him to stop, and (d) was hauling ass to the train that was part of the system that (e) had been unsuccessfully attacked the day before, they did exactly the right thing. It's certainly tragic, but given what could have happened had they not shot and had been wrong...

I thought there was still some question as to the entirety of the dead man's innocence. Has there been some sort of Mea Culpa by the police yet? Admittedly, I have not kept up with the story either.

And while certainly tragic if he is innocent, there is a lesson to be learned about the times we live in, as is learned everytime terror occurs on greater scale.

Check out my comment #38 above, before coming to any final opinions. To me, the photo itself looks completely real. You are right to smell a hoax, but what is fake is the object being photographed. Photoshop jobs have a different patina to them -- it's very hard to fake that out-of-focus grainy look.

You are correctly reacting to something feeling "wrong" in the picture, but it is not a computer-manipulated image -- the hoax was entirely handmade.

You're wrong.

The guy decided to do a runner into a tube station, when cops came up to him.

Turns out he was running because he was staying in the UK illegally (despite the Beeb's claims to the the contrary).

The cops couldn't know that. With the attempted bombings the day before, they sure couldn't take any chances and thus, the guy sadly died.

Basically though, that would be his own fault for not stopping when approached by the police.

That's all there is to it. Sad and regrettable, yes, but the guy's own fault.

Look for empty words, no real condemnation, at least one attack each on Israeli and U.S. policy, and the use of "but".

74 J  Wed, Jul 27, 2005 11:04:14pm

It could well be authentic. Those boards are in the lobby to each underground station. They are maintained by the current on shift staff, and I've seen humourous / sarcastic comments on them several times in the past. It's also quite common for the tube drivers to make amusing comments on the intercom system. What is certain is that the notice is not intended to be at all serious, and is as much a jibe at the police as anything else.

Actually, it refers to the name of Bela Lugosi's character in White Zombie. Then there's all those 70's cop shows that opened with some narrator going "Tonight's Episode: A Midsummer Night's- MURDER!" or "...A diagnosis of MURDER!" and "...Never Take a Wooden MURDER!", etcetera. On the contrary, I'd say that the word MURDER is a laugh riot.

Now there's a curious term- laugh riot. What mental image does it evoke? Frequently, during riots, there are numerous murders. So the term laugh riot should send you into a lather, too.

Then again, you could always loosen up. Recognize that the world is a dark, cruel and horrid place (and unfit for sacred cows of any kind), and laugh at it all just the same.

I agree completely with your belief that this notice was a hoax, almost certainly an attempt at satire by one of the usual suspects. Wouldn't be difficult; in these troubled times, notice-boards with hastily-written announcements are all too prevalent on the Tube, and all he would need would be a felt pen and an air of authority.

However, there is one other possibilty: the staff on the Underground get a little frisky from time to time and create spoof announcements for the benefit of travellers. This could - just possibly - be one of them.

Tehran wants UN reform:

The Islamic Ummah (community) must not be silent in the current debate on reform of the United Nations. Failure to secure a permanent seat on the UN Security Council for a Muslim country would be a missed opportunity of colossal proportions.

...

The Islamic world should seek at least three permanent Security Council seats.

It goes on to state (wrongly) that there are 1.5 billion Muslims.

So when does the Vatican get a permanent "Catholic" seat?

But laugh riot is two words. You have no other way of recalling a reference, (whether to '70's cop shows or whatever), with just the one word. I appreciate gallows humor and sarcasm as much as the next guy, but there is no way to laugh at that word alone. Its not a matter of lightening up. Help the rest of us. Add another word to it that will help us instantly refer to something else.
I know that this is an open and anonymous forum, but c'mon. Work with us.
How do you know whether or not someone who posts here or reads this blog's friend or family member was a victim of murder and then all they see is that word. With no other way of referencing something else.

`On learning of this glorious, gallant and unparalleled action, members of both houses of the British Parliament rose in unison to pay homage to the great Indian soldiers. Each one of the 21 soldiers was posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit, the highest British gallantry award then given to Indian (equivalent to the Victoria Cross awarded to the British).

The story of this epic battle is taught to school children in France and is one of the eight stories of collective bravery published by UNESCO.

And, while the world is fast asleep and while the EU is busy trading with Iran, rather than worrying about the storm clouds on the horizon, this lovely piece of news from the Islamic Republic:

Iran confirmed for the first time Wednesday that it has fully developed solid fuel technology in producing missiles, a major breakthrough that increases the accuracy of missiles hitting targets.

Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani told The Associated Press that Iran has made an "important step forward" in developing the technology, which provides the Islamic Republic with the ability to fire solid-fuel engine ballistic missiles like the Shahab-3.

The Shahab-3, with a range of 1,300 kilometers (810 miles) to more than 1,930 kilometers (1,200 miles), is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and reaching Israel and U.S. forces in the Middle East.

When the migrations were going on the Hindus/Sikhs found it terribly difficult to get in compared to the Pakis/BanglaDeshis.

Now as the troubles increase the Hindus/Sikhs feel they are getting a bad name (i`m given to understand that a few temples and gurdwaras also got torched).

135 Carl in Jerusalem  Thu, Jul 28, 2005 12:32:08am

The Middle East's only democracy in the summer of 2005. Got this from a cousin in Shilo:

Dear friends,

I am writing you in connection with my 14 year old daughter Chaya who has
spent the past 3 weeks of her summer vacation in jail. No,no, she hasn't
murdered anyone. Nor did she steal anything, assault anyone or sell drugs.
All she did was go to a demonstration in " the only democracy in the middle
east". Here is how it happened.

On 22 Sivan 5765 {29.06.05} Chaya decided to lend moral support to her
friends who went to protest Ariel Sharon's plan to expel Jews. What follows
is a direct quote from the official indictment filed against Chaya. She is
accused of standing on a sidewalk while her friends proceeded to block
traffic. After her friends were arrested a policewoman asked Chaya to leave
the area. Chaya refused, saying that she wasn't doing anything illegal, that
she had every right to stand on "every inch of the Land of Israel". The
policewoman, unimpressed, warned Chaya that if she didn't leave immediately
she will be arrested. To which Chaya replied:" So, shut up and arrest me
then". That's it. This is the case that the State of Israel has against
Chaya. And, because Chaya participated in a similar demonstration once
before, the State prosecutor asked the juvenile court to remand Chaya into
police custody UNTIL THE END OF LEGAL PROCEEDINGS AGAINST HER - a process
that can last for MONTHS! What is truly unbelievable is than this
unprecedented request was granted. Judge Dalya Korn wrote a 10 page
dissertation about the danger to society inherent in Chaya's disregard
towards the law passed in the Knesset (Sharon's expulsion law). That,
combined with the fact that Chaya participated in a similar "unlawful"
demonstration before, has made her into a REAL PUBLIC DANGER, thus
justifying her imprisonment until the end of the legal process.

To understand the severity of the above decision one must know that, as a
rule, an average ADULT criminal - be he a thief, rapist, or a drug dealer -
is never kept in jail until the end of proceedings. Even if he is a repeat
offender, and even if he repeats the same crime while he's awaiting his
trial! The worst they usually get slapped with is a house arrest. And
juvenile offenders are treated even more leniently.

The above holds true for all criminals, except for those whose crimes are
"IDEOLOGICALLY BASED". And, according to the State prosecutor's words,
herein lies Chaya's true danger to the society. you heard it right. What is
even more outrageous is that the judge agreed!

Shocked and outraged at this clearly political ruling we appealed the
decision. Our appeal went all the way to the Supreme Court of Israel. Judge
Procaccia, who heard the case, upheld the decision. The only leniency and
compassion that comrade Procaccia agreed to show Chaya was that she could be
released from jail to a house arrest - BUT NOT TO HER PARENTS' HOME.
Ignoring the fact that neither of the parents has any family in Israel ( we
are both immigrants ), comrade Procaccia declared that Chaya must be sent
"far away from this area of volatile emotions if she wants to get out of
jail".

The most outrageous part of her decision was her agreement with the
prosecution that Chaya represents a "danger to the society because of her
ideological motivation". This is coming from a judge who had absolutely no
problems releasing not only common criminals, but even terrorists with blood
on their hands! Over the past few months alone Israeli government released
hundreds of these beasts, and even though appeals for filed against this
release, Procaccia and co. upheld the decision of the government. She never
made the removal of these beasts from the " area of volatile emotions" a
condition for their release. They were allowed to go back home. Comrade
Procaccia is sure THEY won't be dangerous to our society anymore.

To be continued....

136 rednaxela  Thu, Jul 28, 2005 12:32:42am

Btw, since the cops are now searching bags at metro/tube stations, what sort of safeguards are there that suicidal RoPers don't blow up right then at there at the search points?

My guess is none, which is why these guys deserve our utmost gratitude.

137 Carl in Jerusalem  Thu, Jul 28, 2005 12:32:52am

Part 2

Just in case you think that this may have been some kind of a judicial
freak mishap - don't. What is happening in Israel right now is a FULL
COOPERATION between the justice system and the ruling clique aimed at
breaking any minimal resistance to the proposed expulsion of Jews. There is
no other way to explain comrade Procaccia's decision to keep Chaya in jail,
because the maximum punishment that Chaya faces on these charges, if
convicted, would be some monetary fine. And to await this punishment she
must stay in jail!

What is it like for a 14 year old to be in jail? Well, for the first week -
including Shabbat - Chaya was kept in solitary confinement. She was not
allowed to shower or call home. We could not send her clean clothes. The
food she was given was not on the level of kashrut she could eat. For the
first two weeks she was not allowed to have a fan in her cell - that's in
the stifling, muggy Ramle summer, with temperatures reaching the high 90's.
She is bored to tears and immobilized by the heat. Once a week she has to go
through the degrading procedure of her cell being searched, with male
jailers rummaging through all her personal belongings. She is not allowed
out of her cell in the evenings, which means she has to eat her Friday night
meal in the darkness of her cell. As of now we are not allowed to bring her
any food from the outside, which means she gets almost no fruits or
vegetables. We are only permitted to visit her for a half hour every
week. This is how this young girl is being forced to spend her summer
vacation - and I could go on and on.

If the above shocks you and you want to help Chaya - here's what you can do.

Since the Supreme court issued its ruling, there isn't much that can be done
in terms of an appeal. The way to help Chaya now is by raising a public
outcry over this political persecution. This process has two parts: 1.
political/informational and 2. financial.

1. a.You, or anyone else you know can forward this information to any news
media, especially newspapers, in your area. Try to get them interested
enough to interview me via telephone or e-mail.
b. Turn to your politicians and demand they publicly condemn this
outrage. Let me know if they do, and I will publicize it here in Israel.
c. If you frequent a synagogue, ask the Rabbi to explain the case to
the congregants, hold a prayer vigil, ask the Rabbi to write a letter of
condemnation over this blatant political abuse.
d. Organize a protest at the Israeli embassy closest to you.
e. Forward this message to as many friends as you can.

2. There are a number of ways to keep the Chaya's plight in public eye here
in Israel.
a. Poster pastings all over Israel with Chaya'a picture, demanding her
immediate release. It costs about $400 to print 1,000 large color posters
and another $150 to paste them up. Initially, I'd like to paste up the areas
around Maasiyahu prison where Chaya is held, and around the courthouses
where her case is likely to be heard. Every time she is driven to a hearing,

#211,

The leftists are having a field day with the fact that foam fell of the fat orange fuel tank, and think it is a giant failure...

As you may know, the external tank wasn't originally orange. In a few early flights it was white because it was painted. Someone had the bright idea that leaving the paint off the external tank would save money and allow the shuttle to carry more since it wouldn't have to lift the weight of the coating. Makes me wonder now whether that decision to modify the design was a mistake, and that a coating might help with the structural integrity of the orange insulation, as well as possibly reducing drag somewhat...

The difference in this sign between well-intended common sense and multi-culti BS is the "or" before the third clause. It should be "and". Psychologically, the writer is trying to minimize the probable-cause of the decision making process the police went through prior to firing. The implication is that the police, according to the moonbat writer, simply shoot foreigners, "or" anybody with a backpack, "or" people who wear thick coats. Of course, the moonbat forgets to add "or run away from police who order them to stop". That is, "and".

Anti-terrorist officers arrested nine men in raids early Thursday in connection with the botched July 21 attacks on London's transit system, bringing to 20 the number of people police have in custody, including one of the alleged bombers.

GUSH KATIF VIEWPOINT July 27, 2005
ROUNDUPS OF JEWS
by Rachel Saperstein

Our community phone message system is in operation most of the day. Notices of prayer meetings, protest gatherings, organized meetings between soldiers and settlers, births, deaths, controlled explosions, ‘take cover’ because of Arab bombardment, ‘return to normal’ (or what passes for normal here)… all these and more are reported to us.

But most frightening of all was the notification last night that police and soldiers were scouring the Gush Katif communities to round up Jews who are labeled illegals – those who entered without permission, or stayed beyond the time permitted on their permits.

The police have no search warrants” the voice on the phone from the Local Council tells us, “don’t let them into your home.”

Each day the rules become stricter, the decrees more draconian, the police more brutal.

Today we were told that personal friends are no longer allowed into Gush Katif. Only close relatives – a child, a parent, a sibling – will be permitted to visit. Residents entering or leaving Gush Katif must show identification at four different checkpoints. Non-compliance, or compliance not speedy enough to suit the police, is treated brutally.

My friend U., a 57-year-old grandmother, refused to show her ID and was dragged from her car by four policemen and beaten, then arrested and charged with trying to run them down with her car. Allowed to return home hours later, covered in bruises, she sat and wept. In two weeks she will be subjected to the sight of her 15-year-old son’s remains being disinterred from the Katif cemetery.

Mr. K. was in the act of showing his ID when a policeman demanded he turn off the motor of his vehicle. Mr. K asked to keep it running so the air conditioner could protect his small children from the intense heat. Mr. K was dragged from the vehicle and arrested for non-compliance with a police order. His children were returned to their mother. He is under house arrest at the home of a relative in Beersheba. His right to return home has been nullified.

Teenagers, both residents and visitors, are routinely beaten. The fear of a beating is used as a deterrent to keep people out of the ghetto called Gush Katif.

The government’s heavy hand is experienced over and over. Sharon’s private police force, the Nachshon Brigade of the Israel Police, trained in ‘following orders’ practiced their skills as headbreakers arresting foreign workers. Cleansed of all feelings, these uniformed thugs will be leading the forces mercilessly expelling us from our homes.

In three weeks our health clinic will close down.
In three weeks the sole bank will close down.
In three weeks postal service will end.

The government has sporadically shut down our telephone and internet service. Our electricity and water will follow. We are already filling empty cola and juice containers with water for that day.

Sharon’s private army and police are sweeping down on us. We are to be separated, sterilized and broken at all cost.

This roundup of Jews is the first step in the eviction of Jews from Jewish Gaza and northern Samaria, to be followed by the eviction of Jews from all of Judea, Samaria, the Golan Heights, east Jerusalem. To be followed by even worse…

Yet we keep our spirit of humanity alive. We smile at one another. We smile though the shelves in our stores are increasingly bare. We do our laundry, change the sheets, cut the grass. We listen to Torah lectures. Thus we keep our humanity and sanity.

Where are you, my fellow Jews? Where are you, my Christian friends? Where are your protests as democracy is destroyed in our holy land of Israel?

I don't think that is the issue. Getting rid of paint is something done quite often to save weight: some airlines use bare-metal airplanes, and Mercedes scraped paint off their race cars sometime in the '50s.

The point is that the old formulation of the insulating foam contained CFCs, and it was changed because it was deemed environmentally unfiendly. But, the new formulation does not perform as well as the old one. Just out of the top of my head, a possible solution could be to reinforce the foam layer with plastic mesh (or fibers), but I'm not sure about its feasibility.

I'm right here, representing the 811 in 812 Israelis who do not live in Gaza, yet over the years have given their lives to defend your home, have paid higher taxes so you could pay less and on the whole been very patient with you.

8,000 people cannot be allowed to hold an entire nation hostage to their utopia of living surrounded by over a million arabs.

You'll get a new home -- and once again, I, the Israeli tax payer, will have to foot the bill.

238 Al Charabiya  Thu, Jul 28, 2005 3:32:56am

Afternoon.

Been a while since I've been able to say this: that photo is "Fake but accurate".

Not convinced it hasn't been shopped. Underneath the "All Day" is a white splodge which you'd get by using the cloning tool badly to cover up existing writing. Or it could just be bad jpeg compression. Either way it's been faked - on a PC or by a joker...

Sorry if it's a repost, but this has to be a fairly rough way to wake up - from The Times of London:

The first that Todd knew of the armed police raids in Tooting before dawn in which nine people were arrested under the Terrorism Act was the barking of police dogs being unloaded from a van outside his front door.

He thought it was his imagination and went back to sleep. Minutes later, he was woken again by a loud splintering noise as his back garden fence in South London was broken down. It was 4.30am.

He went out to investigate and in the dark he saw figures bursting out of the back door of the terraced house diagonally opposite.

"There was a big fight or a scuffle, crashing and banging, and shouting," said Todd, 38, a cheesemaker, whose flat in Gilbey Road backs on to the rear of the terraced house in Garratt Terrace where six arrests were made.

"I was scared. I suppose it was the police fighting with the people in the house to try to stop them escaping. All I could see was figures crashing around. They broke through my fence and the fence of the next door neighbour."

And here's the killer bit:

Subash Patel, a taxi driver who often parks his car in Garratt Terrace as it is opposite the 24 hour office of Airport Car Hire, said: "There were always lots of people coming and going. Apparently there was about 15 people living there. You would see them sitting outside on the wall when it was fine weather. Sometimes they came out traditional dress, when they had been praying. We saw them out there about a week ago."
...
On the electoral roll only two men, both with Asian names, are registered as living at the property in Garratt Terrace.

Yup. 2 blokes with 13 'friends' staying over. Hmmm.

Altogether now: "There were 15 in the bed and the jihadi said 'roll over, roll over...'"

Carl,

Remember my post on the dead thread y'day about the disgusting rhetoric used by some of the orange people and their blasphemic comparisons between the evacuation of 8,000 people to new homes and the Nazi death camps?

Well, here we go again:

Some residents of the northern Gaza settlement of Elei Sinai said Thursday they planned to wear Nazi concentration camp prisoner uniforms when security forces evacuate them from their homes during the disengagement.

There's something sooo wrong with these people's sense of proportions and I think it's a crime.

Yes, there should be a referendum. After all, if there's so much support for it, no one should be afraid of a referendum, right? But that's what Fat Arik thought when he did a referendum with the Likud - the polls said 60% would support him so he promised to abide by the results. But 60% went against him and he had to chop a few heads to avoid abiding by the results. Can't take that chance again, can we?

BTW, WJC apparently has joked that he had to rape Hillary to conceive Chelsea. That made it into that book that came out last month. No idea if it is true or not, but the Prostitute's Toe-Sucker (Morris) claimed the reason Bill cheated so much was because Hillary was lesbian.

It makes sense why she married him, a politically ambitious women hitching her wagon to a rising star in an era when openly lesbian women would have a hard time getting elected to public office (not that it stopped Barbara Mikulski, although she has never admitted being a lesbian, despite having never been married and having several close friends who happened to be lesbian).

But what would Bill have gotten out of it?

Thus, I am not 100% convinced that she is a lesbian, unless she concealed it from Bill until after they were married and he was already running for office and didn't want to be running as a divorced man.

On his laptop he also had illegal images of a man having sex with a dead woman.” According to the paper, “Mohammed B. was aroused by gruesome amputations and sex with a dead woman.”

Does anyone doubt this item would be trumpeted across the MSM if this guy were not protected by Political Correctness?

The revelations offer a striking contrast to the man who claimed to have renounced the culture of Dutch society for the purity of the Islamic faith. Even as he indulged his most gruesome fantasies in secret, Bouyeri put on a show of strict religious asceticism, abstaining from alcohol and refusing to take part in activities involving both men and women.

Re: Kirly, elBarto, ...

I checked out the Honda Insight 3 or 4 years ago before the Prius was available. There are a couple downsides to these cars.

No cars get their advertised mileage. Unless to are driving downhill on the highway. Unless you are gaga over emissions (they are very low in emissions) the extra cost just isn't work it. The Insight was lucky to get 45 in town (check out Consumer Reports).

Also, the batteries do not last forever. If you live in California and garage the car they last a lot longer than if you live in Phoenix and park the thing in the sun. The replacement cost for the full bank (3 years ago) was around $1,200. I think that has come down a lot but your have to factor it into the cost of operating the vehicle.

I drive a 93 Honda Civic Hatchback that gets 35-40 MPG in town. I don't drive it much on the highway, it's too uncomfortable and noisy for that but when I do it gets 45 MPG.

PS-I am not all wiener. I also have a 3/4 ton Dodge Diesel 4x4 for pulling the boat and hunting.

That's a thread, right there.

CAIR’s filing an amended motion has two apparent implications: that CAIR has tacitly acknowledges the truth of Whitehead’s deleted assertions; and those assertions can now be repeated with legal impunity.

We list here the key statements that CAIR no longer deems legally improper, followed by some speculations as to why it might have decided not to contest them in court.

·[CAIR is an] organization founded by Hamas supporters….
·CAIR was started by Hamas members….
·CAIR … was founded by Islamic terrorists.

That's gonna leave a mark.

OT: CAIR has Admitted They Are Founded By Islamic Terrorists

CAIR Founded by “Islamic Terrorists”?

By Daniel Pipes and Sharon Chadha
FrontPageMagazine.com July 28, 2005

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Inc., filed a defamation lawsuit against Andrew Whitehead, of Anti-CAIR (or ACAIR), a grass-roots project whose name explains its mission: to expose the largest, most vocal, and dangerous Islamist organization in North America.

CAIR’s March 2004 lawsuit is part of what seems to be a policy of using the legal process to silence or chill critics. In this case, CAIR claimed it had been harmed by six statements on ACAIR’s website, including CAIR’s being founded by Hamas supporters, being partially funded by terrorists, and intending to impose Islamic law on the United States.

Then, on June 20, 2005, CAIR filed an amended motion that substantially cut back on its libel claims, retaining just portions of two of the original six statements. With original misspellings retained, the offending passages are:

· Let their be no doubt that CAIR is a terrorist supporting front organization….

· [CAIR] seeks to overthrow constitutional government in the United States….

Why did CAIR drastically reduce its claims versus Whitehead?

It might have to do with Whitehead, admirably represented by Reed Rubinstein of Greenberg Traurig LLP, having responded to CAIR’s lawsuit with an extensive and well informed set of discovery requests and documents. These filings perhaps established for CAIR the depth of Whitehead’s knowledge and the soundness of his opinions. If so, then CAIR’s leadership concluded that the bulk of its case against Whitehead would collapse in court... (Read it All)

¿East Coast Hurricane Near Miss Next Week?

Thunderstorms developing on northern end of vigorous tropical wave near 50W.

0Z Canadian Global says this develops into a hurricane, comes charging towards the Southeast, and veers out to sea just in time to spare the Carolinas!

Of course, the models have been a little right (poleward biases), and the Canadian would only have to be slightly wrong at day 6 for a powerful hurricane to be approaching the Carolinas and travelling over abnormally warm water to get there.

The 6Z GFS does not develop that wave.

But NHC tropical models suggest the wave has generally favorable conditions for strengthening, and suggests a west-northwest path through 120 hours that would have this in the Bahamas on Tuesday.

60% of the Likud voters would mean 60% of app. 35% of Israeli voters in total, which would be only 21% of the electorate.

I'm not distorting facts. I didn't deny that the Likud vote was a small part of the electorate. But the choice to only have the Likud vote was made by none other than Fat Arik, who claimed it would take "too long" to have a real referendum. So you can't exactly pin that one on me. And it was Fat Arik who said that the results of that referendum would be binding on him, and who has terrorized any Likud MK who has attempted to act in the way that the Likud's voters decided that they should act.

I agree that there should have been a referendum, but to my knowledge, nothing in Israel's Basic Laws provide guidelines for when a referendum should be held.

That's also true. That doesn't mean you can't make the guidelines. The Knesset can move when it wants to move. Look what happened yesterday.

To my knowledge, there's not a precedent to go by, either.

Sure there is. It's called the Camp David Treaty. And it passed with ~ 90 votes in the Knesset without anyone imposing "coalition discipline." That's how you gain a consensus. Should we have a provision like in the US that requires a super-majority for treaties? Sure we should. But in this case there's no treaty. Find me another country in the world that unilaterally surrendered land without any kind of agreement or receiving anything in return.

I always tell my students that one of the hallmarks of the human species is that it takes so long to learn how to be a grownup. Humans have stretched out the primate tendancy for lengthly childhood/adolescence to the ridiculous extreme. In this technological society we live in, it usually takes 25 years for a human child to be totally dependent from its parents. And in that time, the parents generally have invested a lot of time and money into the child. From the point of view of evolutionary biology, this makes sense, as it is more likely to launch a successful adult human who will find a mate, reproduce, and pass on the parents' genes. Gotta love science.

So don't sweat...you're likely going to live a long time and these years of semi-dependance on your parents are just preparation for a successful independent 'adulthood.'

I don't know if y'all have seen this, but it's reassuring to me that my denomination isn't completely gone yet:

Jerusalem Anglicans side with Israel

By SAM SER
The Jerusalem Post

July 25, 2005

Not all Anglicans oppose Israel, and Rev. Tony Higton and his church in the Old City of Jerusalem have gone out of their way to say so.

Following a particularly sharply-worded condemnation of Israel by the Anglican Peace and Justice Network (APJN) that excoriated the government for "the draconian conditions of the continuing occupation under which so many Palestinians live," Higton's Israel Trust of the Anglican Church (ITAC) issued its own statement repudiating the APJN as "biased and unjust."

"How can the visitors on the APJN commission... hope to be taken seriously," the ITAC statement asked, "when they spend a mere eight days in the country, without proper consultation on the Israeli side, then produce a statement, implying they understand the complexities of the conflict, and making pronouncements about it?"

"The APJN statement loses credibility because it contains very inadequate references to terrorism and its effects, and no reference to the need of the Israelis to defend themselves," ITAC continued.

"Furthermore, the church should recognize that the Palestinians experience economic disaster and lack of infrastructure, partly through corruption, injustice and oppression on the part of some of their own leaders."

The ITAC statement concluded that "much of the church is predisposed, on the basis of inadequate information, to accept anti-Israel statements."

Higton, who has lived in Jerusalem with his wife since 2002, told The Jerusalem Post from London that the Anglican Church "needs to be praying for people on both sides, rather than start ladling out condemnation. We need to be more Christian about it."

He also said his church's defense of Israel was not related to converting Jews, but a response to a move by the larger Anglican community that "is undermining our relationship with the local population."

In the US as well, Episcopal Christians - the Episcopal Church is part of the "worldwide Anglican Communion" - have criticized the Anglican call for divestment from Israel approved earlier this year.

Rev. Mark Sisk, the Episcopal bishop of New York, criticized the Anglican Church last week for the divestment proposal - even though his own church, the Episcopal Church USA, supported the divestment call.

Similarly to Higton, Sisk said that such action undermined relations between the church and Jews.

Ohio- generally cool and dry, temps slowly warming up through the weekend to near/slightly above normal.

6Z NAM says dry in Ohio, and still suggests that the tail end of the Eastern trough splits off from the Westerlies, and a surface reflection developing south of Louisiana by this weekend.

I'm interested in that mainly because there is a chance that a tropical depression or even a tropical storm could form before it moves west across the Gulf into Texas about Tuesday. If the wave near 50W gets named Harvey, it would have a chance of being named Irene, and then when it moved into Texas and weakened, I could make corny "Good Night, Irene" puns.

#305 carl in J'lem:

Sure there is. It's called the Camp David Treaty. And it passed with ~ 90 votes in the Knesset without anyone imposing "coalition discipline." That's how you gain a consensus. Should we have a provision like in the US that requires a super-majority for treaties? Sure we should. But in this case there's no treaty. Find me another country in the world that unilaterally surrendered land without any kind of agreement or receiving anything in return.

I understand what you're saying. Most countries, including Denmark, the constitutional laws of which I am most familiar with, require treaties and amendments to the costitution to be passed with a 2/3 majority and there are also pretty clear rules for when a referendum should be held.

The point is, Israel doesn't have a "proper" constitution, which sets such guidelines.

Thus, as it stands, I guess a simple Knesset majority is binding, right?

I mean, like it or not, that is the current status?

If that is the case, i'd have to maintain that law is law and it is binding upon the citizenry.

Establishing clearer guidelines and providing an actual constitution is another matter.

However, I doubt that anything could ever pass with a 2/3 majority in the Knesset - save perhaps for a law increasing MKs salaries and providing them with universal immunity from all laws, past, present and future.

:>) If you know what I mean...

OT. test drove a toyota prius today. it's one of the funniest looking cars i've ever seen but based on the reported mpg while i drove it, i think it'll easily do the 50+ mpg advertised.

Based on owners' reports, you probably won't. You'll probably get mileage in the high 30's to mid 40's. Were you watching the instantaneous mileage? That can be misleading.

If you like it though, buy it. I like the Prius, too.

396 Al Charabiya  Thu, Jul 28, 2005 5:26:43am

OT/ More Google bias?

May be old news but have a look at what you get if you type idiot into Google. GoogleImages is the top hit. And look at that nice photo in the middle.

Are Google deliberately linking to one of their own pages, or do they include the results of their own searches in the sites they hunt through so that they can still blame the bias on 'automation'? I've never seen a Google search result come up as a hit on a Google search before...

At least typing 'failure' in gives both The White House AND Michael Moore's website as the top two hits (clearly a GoogleRank battle's going on there).

If someone understands Google rankings perhaps they could drop me a line. Confused!

Kirly, how was the handling?

so sorry for the late response. fell asleep.

i thought it handled just fine - like a relatively small economy car (which i think it is!). the brakes are very touchy. i currently drive a '96 mustang gt and i have recently test driven a honda accord hybrid and there's just no comparison. it did seem to have plenty of power from a dead stop and i took it on the freeway with no problems merging.

#15 elBarto

They never get the advertised

that's what i hear. in fact, that's why i haven't already picked up the accord hybrid. i do think it's possible with the toyota though. it had this onboard computer that tells you the current mpg and i could tell within the first mile that if you kept that screen displayed and adjusted your driving, you could learn to squeeze the maximum mpg out of it.

I've heard that that's where the heart shape comes from -- butts.

Yep. Most primates mate, errr, doggy style, and the plump roundness of the female butt is very attractive to the male. When that changed to good ol' ventral-ventral mating, those delicious round things got transfered to the front.

Of course this is very simplistic, but it's a good example of how behavior and morphology cruise along together in the big evolutionary picture.

That is what I hear about boobs too. The resemblance to butt cheeks is not an evolutionary accident.

I read something similar (I hope this doesn't sound racist) that darker skinned people tend to have larger lips, because lips serve as a reminder of other parts of the body, and light skinned people don't need big lips due to the difference in color.

I have noticed that a lot of otherwise attractive woman of Irish ancestry ruined by the lack of a good set of lips. Y'all remember Kathleen Sullivan from the TV news in the 80s. Case in point.

I also hear armpit hair is there to make the pits smellier. More surface area for evaporating sweat, which contains subtle traces of pheremones.

At least that is what I read somewhere.

BS. Beltran knew he was going to go to New York from day one. He and his agent just strung out the negotiations to get more leverage with the Mets management.

Had the Astros management known about Beltran's intentions they could have signed a quality free agent like Moises Alou or re-signed Jeff Kent.

In addition, Beltran's been talking shit about how the Mets are going to take 3 out of 4 from the Astros at Minute Maid Park this weekend.

Thus, as it stands, I guess a simple Knesset majority is binding, right?

Not everything that is legal is wise. Intuitively, major decisions in an entity's life should not be made by simple majority. They should have broader support. I cannot think of anything more seminal in the life of a state than a decision to forfeit land that rightfully belongs to it and getting nothing in return. Remember Haim Ramon's infamous appearance on Nightline after the Rabin assassination? Shows everything that's wrong in this country.

However, I doubt that anything could ever pass with a 2/3 majority in the Knesset - save perhaps for a law increasing MKs salaries and providing them with universal immunity from all laws, past, present and future.

Camp David did.

The Jordanian treaty did.

However, this entire argument touches on something more fundamental, namely the fact that Israel should perhaps have a clearer constitutional set-up.

Reaching even simple majority in the Knesset is hard enough, imagine 2/3.

I was thinking the same thing. But I haven't seen her Mom here today either.

Yes, I know why there is no constitution.

Okay, the Sinai and Jordan treaties, but apart from that!

But those are the kinds of decisions that should have supermajorities. Oslo-2 type votes are more likely to bring division than anything else.

IRA to halt violence.

IRA to halt violence.

Could the WoT have convinced them to stop? Did they not want to be lumped in with the muslims?

the snarky-ness of the "look a bit foreign" statement caused me to doubt its authenticity.

#480-Rayra-

I feel priviledged to have frustrated PINENUTS sooo much that he was spewing that bit of "genius" all over the threads last night.

The jack-hole actually said something to the effect that-

Just to see the look on George Bush's mother's face-he'd like to see George W. Bush swinging from the gallows...

Pinenuts is a pig.

487 j-damn  Thu, Jul 28, 2005 8:12:59am
Ahh.. Whats the point? If you can't see it then thats your problem.

My problem is with you playing the PC policeman and telling other posters to change their names. I have to sit here and read OT nonsense all-day long even though there are open threads; weather reports for places I don't live and endless reports on "Fat Arik" by Carlfromjerusalem, too--complaining about it results in "this isn't your blog".

So, pal, this isn't your blog--you don't make the rules as to who can be named what. As others have told me "You don't like it, tough".

488 bunnymud  Thu, Jul 28, 2005 8:27:21am

BWAHAHAHAHAHA

Rayra just gave Pine-nut the SMACK DOWN

No criticism intended here but although trollish behaviour is discouraged, certain 'idiosyncracies' such as Ed's weather reports are tolerated and enjoyed. Often that breaks up the tension on a really hot thread. Ed will plop some bizzarely colored weather report. If you're not interested, scroll right over to the next post. But long ago after 9/11 when no too many people were on here and a thread was lucky to be twenty posts long, Ed's weather reports were a grateful change to change the topic and take a break from the evil, before getting back on topic. Ease up! Get used to us. We're quirky but we're cute! ;>

I think we've reached something like a consensus. Close enough for me, at any rate. If I picked another name, it would take that much longer to attain my current level of ill-repute.

So, sorry Standanddeliver... Err, Saladliver... Whatever. The name stays.

Thanks for that article.

Amazing how even though he knew it was one of our bombs that disfigured him, and now knows that we can't fix his eye or his scars, this is his reaction:

Ayad saluted a picture of the president, saying in English, "Bush, very, very good."

Well if you're gonna proudly stand by something, it might as well be "Murder". You should be proud. By gum, you ain't gonna let that ole pc spoilsport saladliver tell you what to do. So Murder it is.

#487 j-damn
I don't know what you're gettin' all bent outta shape about. I wasn't claiming to make the rules. I was just asking, from one person to another, to give us something else to refer to than that word by itself. Now I'm gonna tell you what to do. Calm down. First you complain about me trying to tell other people what to do, then you proceed to waah about things other people are saying.
If you guys think I'm being too pc, and want make a stand, for Murder, then go for it.

:-)
I've spent way too much time with Photoshop to fall for that forgery....

496 Murder  Thu, Jul 28, 2005 4:34:38pm

LOL! I just realized- the guy used a grain filter so it would look authentic. How could I have missed that? The picture-taker would have had to use a flash. You aren't going to get that kind of grain with a flash-bulb, hence, the grain is to cover up signs of doctoring. It seemed too trivial to merit much of an examination before. Live and learn.

497 mattm  Thu, Jul 28, 2005 4:53:25pm

Even thouth it is fake, people shouldn't have to be told that listening to the police after a trrroist attach is a good idea.

498 j-damn  Fri, Jul 29, 2005 3:39:26am
Ed will plop some bizzarely colored weather report. If you're not interested, scroll right over to the next post.

Those who do not like other poster's names should likewise do the same, no?

499 j-damn  Fri, Jul 29, 2005 3:50:50am
Now I'm gonna tell you what to do. Calm down. First you complain about me trying to tell other people what to do, then you proceed to waah about things other people are saying.

I'm pointing out that at other times in the past, I have brought up legit questions regarding people staying on-topic and these have been shot down by others saying "just scroll on by". I am suggesting you do the same with Monsieur Murder.

If you guys think I'm being too pc, and want make a stand, for Murder, then go for it.

Yes, you are being too PC. I detest PC and here's why:

A few years ago, I worked at a Public Library. I used to volunteer to cover absencies at other brances. Well, one time I covered for an employee at a branch that serviced, primarily, minority populations. A customer who recognized me from another branch saw me at this different branch and said "Hey, what are you doing here?" I replied that I was a 'hired gun' and went where they told me.

Well, you should have heard the sh*tstorm from the witches, er, powers that be. "You can't say 'gun' around 'those people'!"

You see? The PC liberal idiot managers were deciding that those brown people (the ones they supposedly stand up for) might hear the word 'gun' and get all hopped up and start shooting...and that would have been my fault. I imagine the same would have applied if I had said "Oh, I just put out fires" or "Hey, I just go hither and yon and stop the bleeding"--hey, this guy wants us to burn things and stab people!

So all purveyors of PC can basically bite it.

How about just not being PC in the first place. Whine about something that needs the whining.
