Al-Reuters Explains

Thu, Sep 15, 2005 at 7:46:22 pm PDT

Reuters Explains Photo Of Bush Bathroom Note.

According to Hershorn, Wilking was one of several photographers covering the United Nations Security Council meeting between about 11 and noon yesterday. He was part of a pool stationed on a balcony that faced Bush’s back; a group of White House photographers was on a balcony facing the president.

Wilking shot about 200 images and sent two memory cards to the press room at the U.N., where Hershorn was working. Hershorn looked at the images on a computer and initially decided not to send any of them.

But a few hours later, he started to wonder about a note that Bush was seen writing in three of the pictures. Out of curiosity, he zoomed in to see if he could read it.

Once he saw what it said, Hershorn decided the note was interesting and worth publishing. The white parts of the picture were overexposed, so a Reuters processor used Photoshop to burn down the note. This is a standard practice for news photos, Hershorn says, and the picture was not manipulated in any other way.

Around 4:30 p.m., Reuters transmitted two versions of the photo, including one that was tightly cropped around the note and Bush’s hand.

Our post from yesterday about this story: lgf: Al-Reuters, Still Digging.

UPDATE at 9/15/05 7:57:29 pm:

Excuse me while I reset my irony meter:

Hershorn says he decided to transmit the picture because it was interesting.

“There was no malicious intent,” he says. “That’s not what we do.”

UPDATE at 9/15/05 8:05:04 pm:

Tony Abu Tuz gets histographic with it: Reuters manipulates news photo.

Ask yourself, would a Reuters photographer have published a similar photograph written by a Clinton?

Wasn't there a line in a movie starring Dudley Moore where Moore tells his valet that he has to go to the bathroom and the valet replies "I'll alert the media, Sir"?

9 JammieWearingFool  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 5:53:19pm

Another Photoshop fiasco.

Will these clowns ever learn?

The MSM has done yeoman's work to help drive Bush's poll numbers down and can't help but pile on.

Well, after tonight, they're going back up.

Assholes.

i'm sure he was hoping it said something else. Like that guy is a pompus a$$

11 nigella  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 5:54:17pm

Lets not kid ourselves, this was used purely to embarass the President. Nothing relevant in it at all. No mention about the speeches he gave or anything else. They use this picture for political reasons only. Sick!

12 Pepperpot  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 5:55:19pm

Now come on all, the LLL is just SHOCKED that a man they believe commands the winds and the waves, is able transport 1000's of people, 1000s of tons of equipment and supplies 1000's of miles actually has to use the necesary sometimes. How could that of happened - you mean he is only human after all?

I know, I know, I didn't tell who the valet was. In my defense, I can spell Moore.

15 DesertSage  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 5:56:40pm

This is news worthy why?

What if there where national security sensitive documents on his desk?

i'm really begining to hate the MSM scum...

16 madawaskan  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 5:57:47pm

The note says in block letters-

Something like-

CAN I TAKE A BATHROOM BREAK?

In cursive or more of a script style-with President Bush's or a male hand still in midst of writng it says-

Is it possible...

Now why do they assume when there is a style of writing change that it is ALL of the President's handwriting?

In fact it is possible that Condi Rice was asking to be excused-but that wouldn't be any fun....

17 Ferny  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 5:58:07pm

Reading leftist forums with this picture posted, I got a clearer picture of just how passionately they hate this man: a note about a bathroom break prompted the most vile insults and expletives. These people really need a healthier outlet for their emotions than a president: their childishness forces those of us who don't even support Bush all that much, to point out their idiocy and come across as apologists.

18 wee fury  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 5:58:21pm

You said: "Anything to make the POTUS look ridiculous."
I believe that was their intent. But, to me all the photo says is that President Bush is human . . . I think the photo will backfire and show the MSM for what it is, ridiculous and stupid.

The white parts of the picture were overexposed, so a Reuters processor used Photoshop to burn down the note. This is a standard practice for news photos, Hershorn says, and the picture was not manipulated in any other way.

This is total nonsense! the white part was not "burned down" -- the contrast was massively bosted

See my Photoshop analysis, which shows this manipulation clearly

22 FuzzyLogic  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 6:02:17pm

What's the big deal, other than the fact that the MSM is so desperate to hurt Bush they are stooping to bathroom humor (literally) And for those of you who complain that Bush's numbers are down... all we know is that they are down. How much of that "down" is because he is "not" rightwing enough and is disappointing the far right. The numbers, frankly, mean nothing?

23 bonz  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 6:03:41pm

Flash: from the Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda
The following picture was taken by a photographer for the Associated Pres News Corp. in Washington D.C. It reveals a note written by Franklin Roosevelt to one of his staff. The translation reads: "I will need a bathroom break. Would it be possible for me to leave the meeting as I will need the help of an aide due to these damn braces on my legs."
This man leads a nation? Pathetic.

24 madawaskan  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 6:03:57pm

There is no doubt in my mind that the MSM intends to ridicule the President in any way possible,{I know I would hate to have to control my bladder the way he or the First Lady have to, I would be writing notes a lot!}

27 foreign devil  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 6:06:19pm

I always wondered how they handle that sort of thing. Like...does the Queen, for instance, ever have a 'bad day' and need to trot off to the loo several times because of dodgy mussels the night before? And if so, how does she handle it? Or the President?

28 Semper Gumbi  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 6:07:31pm

31 CanadianBacon  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 6:08:19pm

Also interesting is the admission that the Globe and Mail, a left-of-center Canadian newsrag, is the only paper known to have run the picture. Just trying to keep up with the cabinet ministers who publicly proclaim hatred of Americans, and the Prime Minister's staffers who just hate Bush. Assholes each and every one, with the Globe to wipe up with.

No problem. The MSM serially lie and manipulate the news to suit left wing and terrorist causes. This is just business as usual, even the denial of malice.

OK, we don't have a free press in the sense that most people understand the word 'free'. But then we don't have terrorists in the sense that most people understand the word 'militants'.

Those in charge of information for all the major newspapers habitually create fake stories. When caught, they fall back on "fake, but accurate." This screamed "photoshop."

What surprises me is their overconfidence in thinking they can get away with it. I'm concerned for the day the fakery gets more indecipherable, for it's obvious they are not bound by any sense of ethics or professionalism.

She's taking probiotics, chlorophyll, other vitamins, in addition to the chemo. Our oncologist is very holistic, too, pushing dietary changes and juicing, and prayer, in attention to the chemicals. He's a very holy Catholic doctor from Colombia (speaks with a great accent), who was going to be a mathematician or physicist (and was once even in the seminary in Colombia) before his mom convinced him to become a doctor.

Two more chemo sessions and the weekly Herceptin infusions, then radiation. Hopefully we're done after that.

Ohhh.... notes from meetings...

"help! get us out of here!"

Heh. Nothing so polite. Just little notes questioning the public's antecedents, whether they were born naturally stupid and then took classes to lower their IQ, whether or not Yankee blood must have crept into the bloodline somehow, that sort of thing.

What they all think is that he is down and they can keep kicking. They never learn anything.....he will win in the end...Roberts will be on the court and so will another conservative.

The people in N.O. will understand what a true compasionate conservative is.

The war against terrorism will be won...but not in his administration.

And while they continue to play their "I got you" games, he will once again triumph in the midst of underestimation.

History will love this man.....many, like me, already do.

111 The Other Les  Thu, Sep 15, 2005 7:00:53pm

So President Bush and his staff are human. So what?

One of the longstanding complaints of the Left seems to be that Republican presidents (Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43) are not using the magic powers that come with the office. The reality is of course that President Reagan could not eliminate AIDS with the wave of his hand and Dubya could not wade into the Gulf of Mexico and raise his arms to deflect a hurricane. And the loaves and fishes thing is, of course, right out.

The mental habit of deifying (or demonizing) the office of the president and the institution of government in general, along with the habit of treating fantasies (such as the Primacy of the Parasite in ethics and economics) as superior to reality, are indicative of the Left's reversion to a more primitive mode of mentality.

This would be merely amusing were it not for the pact that primitive mentalities also tend to be more prone to violence against their betters.

Stolen dollars based upon a phony oil shortage can pay for a lot of graft. What are the family of Saud really hiding?

Don't we all really want to know? This thing didn't start yesterday, the graft of the UN might be fools' money compared to the abject corruption of the wire press, and most especially their photos, which seem to scream that they have adopted the doctrine that one picture says one thousand lying propagandistic words.

Your wife and you and your kids are in my prayers.

That POS was featured in this article...and look at the connection :Bush labeled 'a--hole' in new Google bomb

President Bush is the target of a new "Google bomb" where he's labeled an "a-- hole" in a vulgar filmstrip when the graphic term is entered into the popular search engine.

A song and video critical of the president, his Cabinet and high-profile conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter appear as the sole result in Google searches when the words "a-- hole" with a space between the words are put into Google's engine, and the "I'm feeling lucky" button is punched.......

Very strange; I have tried every trick to get that article to fill. It did before, but now, on both AOL and IE, it flickers, the title does show, but the page will not fill. I actually went to Google, and tried getting the article there. I did...same thing. The AM edition of WND is already up, and the article is gone. I did a search by the article's name, and it was there, on the side of the page the search went to, but I had the same problem....no go, while the whole site is acting strangely, the other articles filles with no trouble. This is the search page, where you will see the article on the right-hand side. Note: the page itself may flicker, but it does fill; just the article doesn't.

Are there any computer people who could tell if this was done maliciously to the article by Google, in a very specific hacking?

10,000 dead in NO...Um,...ok maybe 500...Bushchimphitlerhalliburton!

Bush wrote a note he has to go pee pee......Um,...ok we made it up. Bushchimphitlerhalliburton!

Aside from left wingers, the MSM has absolutely no credibility left whatsoever. Pretty soon we'll be hearing about the straw that broke the camel's back.

Just sit back and watch them continue to implode. The really scary thing about the constant uncovering of lies, forgeries, inacurracies, etc., is that 20 years ago (hell, maybe even 5 years ago in some instances...) the MSM would have shoved this crap down people's throats and we never would have known the truth.

MSM are, apparently, slow learners. Ok, Lefty's read this real slow....YOU NO LONGER HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OVER THE DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION. Its a brand new media world. It seems that alternative media is to the MSM what huge meteors were to dinosaurs.

187 TMF  Fri, Sep 16, 2005 3:16:15am

I would love to hear a member of the LLLMSM candidly explain why they do what they do.

Is it some sense of political righteous indignation, some deep seeded, twisted "journalistic" philosophy that requires them to engage in propaganda, distortion, manipulation to challenge the powers that be (as long as the powers are christian, republican and white)?

Is it editorial pressure that they cave to lest they be out of a job?

Or are they just assholes?

188 Tinker  Fri, Sep 16, 2005 3:29:45am

Maybe someone already said this, but of 200 photos of Bush, they chose this one, and altered it to boot?

The MSM has entered batty-land big time.

A confession: I'm enjoying watching the death spiral of the MSM, like guessing when an obnoxious drunk will slug down so many drinks he falls off the stool.

189 Gizmo  Fri, Sep 16, 2005 3:43:44am

With regard it the "manipulation" charge, I don't think it sticks. I know Gary Hershorn and have worked for him in the past. The Photoshopping of the image was limited to what's known as the "Hand of God" in the industry. The name is derived from the old darkroom technique of using your hand to block light from the enlarger as it falls on the photo paper during the printing process. It's also known as "Dodging and Burning".

The main ethical rule for photo editing is "would someone standing next to you when the image was taken have seen the same scene as found in your image?" I think the image in question passes that test. The main frowned upon thing in the industry about using the "Hand of God" is that it's often easily detected and sticks out like a sore thumb when other photographers look at the image.

I'll buy Gary's explaination about why he moved the image. I think the motivating factor was that it was a "funny" photo. I personally don't think there's anything embarassing about the photo or the subject matter. The guy needed a break to go take a leak... big deal.

190 Laserjock  Fri, Sep 16, 2005 3:56:38am

Some lizardoids here examine the ethical ramifications of using Photoshop techniques without really examining why Reuters would release this in the first place. Is this picture "ok" to release since it is our president? Is no one peering over the shoulder of Hugo Chavez or Decaffeinated Kofi (hat tip: Steyn) with telephoto lenses, and would such a picture be deemed "newsworthy" by Reuters? You can bet your sweet ass they wouldn't.

Incidentally, (as I commented on War Photoblog) I am extremely concerned that in a few years Photoshop (and competitors) will have gotten so proficient at image manipulation that even experts will not be able to certify something as genuine with any certainty.

We're all lucky as shit that the Texas Air Guard memos were forged so poorly - all it takes is a little more forethought on the part of forgers and manipulators and we can kiss what used to be called "truth" goodbye.

191 Gizmo  Fri, Sep 16, 2005 4:18:48am

"Maybe someone already said this, but of 200 photos of Bush, they chose this one, and altered it to boot?"

Reuters used 22 images (many of Bush) from that photographer from that meeting.

I understand what you're saying. This will get pushed to the back pages by the MSM as new big stories appear - that's just the way of journalism. The exceptions will be those that put the President in the wrong.

Katrina recovery needs a good blog, where people from all over the country can report in on the progress/lack of progress in their areas.

Charles has done a great job with all the hurricane threads, but natural disasters aren't his main focus - the threat of militant Islam is. But b/c he gets so many hits/day, it would be great if he could post something a few times a week, just to keep the subject in the public eye.

195 Gretchen  Fri, Sep 16, 2005 5:05:43am

It seems the Photoshop techniques used didn't alter the content of the photo, so it is a non issue.

However, why is this photo newsworthy? Is it the smoking gun proving beyond all reasonable doubt that the leader of the free world urinates? Was Reuters surprised by this? Publishing this is childish beyond all belief.

Are news decisions made by Beevis and Butthead at these news organizations? Do giggling morons sit around thinking they really scooped everybody because they got a peepee note?

The lamestream media strikes out again

I guess this photo settles it.

The President is not a robot. I'll let the DUmmies and Kossacks know.

Following up al-Reuters, CNN has now run a "story" on GWB going to the bathroom at the UN:

In the video piece, you can see CNN looking at the wacko-left "Atrios" website.

All par for the course with the "mainstream" media...

My point stands. Photographers should NEVER be in a position to photograph documents in front of the president.

The Secret Service should think of things like that.

And I still wonder how hard it would be for an assassin to get by UN security. How much control does the president's bodyguards have in a setting like that?

Remember the guy with the grenade during the president's East European trip?

EXCELLENT POINTS! I didn't even notice that until you pointed it out, but the part GW wrote CLEARLY is the second part.

Looks like a subordinate is asking permission to go to the loo, and Bush is responding "Is it possible..."

Hmmm, maybe he was saying "Is it possible... you could wait?" What else make sense? Not much!

The man was sitting with world leaders on both sides of him. There's a crowd of diplomats seated directly behind him. This ain't the place to lay classified documents around you at the table anyway. It's a non-issue.

Also, the job of the SS is to protect the well being of the President.

Being that they are in an organization where there are varying levels of hygiene, maybe they are referring to someone sitting close that had an unpleasant odor.

It's like when the stinky kid is sitting next to you in class and you pass the cryptic note, "I may NEED A BATHroom break" to your friend.

Lets see... Who would they be sitting next to...

Thanks for the update. I was using IE and ran into about 50 install messages when I tried to get onto that page. There were so many attempting to install that I felt the page had spyware, and I was unable to disable the page with the Windows Task Manager. I disconnected the cable and ran virus/spyware scans. Not sure if anyone else had that problem. Might return there later with Firefox, I do want to see the source code.

Visited the site using Firefox - content displayed, but never stopped loading. No installation popped up (firewal, virusscan, pop-up-blocker active), but as long as I've been there I noticed connections to several servers rushing through the footer of my browser.
Not an internet-pro, so I'm curious (in a scared way...) what's up with that site.
Thanks in advance for clarification.

It's amazing that this photo didn't end up instigating a demand for Senate investigations.

"Does the President have a bladder and when did he acquire it?"

I went back using FireFox and IE and couldn't duplicate the attack. The only adware I saw was tribalfusion which is a common rotating ad.

I should have went back and checked last night because I see nothing that would prompt those installs. Sorry, might have been something on my end..?

Does anyone remember that photo of members of a delegation at the UN looking at pornography during a UN Sec Council meeting?

212 drool  Fri, Sep 16, 2005 8:59:49am

Get over it. The same processes are used in many investigations and presented in court.

What it does show is that Mr President needs to work on his grammar and penmanship.

Betcha he's dislexic.

Has anyone compared the handwriting to a Bush sample to see if it's his? Seems like the first step.

I had no attack, just noticed traffic and lots of changing server-connections during my first visit there. Checked the site again and it didn't occur that time. Only thing I noticed was more ads than before - so I think it was just a problem of ad-servers, which couldn't deliver their content fast enough.

No need to be sorry - thanks to you for checking it.
