In Robert Spencer's Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam, he lists dozens of events like this which have occured since 9/11 and been covered up by investigators as isolated incidents

7 zombie  Thu, Oct 6, 2005 8:29:08pm

Sorry, #1 Abu, I have been too busy today to keep on top of this story, and I haven't updated my OK suicide bombing page since late last night. The Jawa Report is doing a decent job, as are a couple of other sites. I've gotten some good tips, and other info from readers, but the number of links about the story have expanded exponentially, and keeping on top of it all is difficult. Plus I've been linked to by so many blogs now on this (Michelle Malkin, et al.) that I feel I've already done my bit to spread the word.

I will try to update my site with some new links and info. Also, based on details sent to me from people in Norman, I will adjust my map as well.

It's difficult enough running a news service with 1,000 employees -- it's nigh on impossible to do it as a one-person operation.

If an Oklahoma Jihadi dies in the forest and the MSM refuses to talk about it, does that mean it didn't really happen? ...

9 Abu Maven  Thu, Oct 6, 2005 8:34:26pm

zombie,

Anything new on the Islamic angle? I've been looking at the OK tv station reports constantly. They say this guy was spending a whole lot of time in the mosque.

Why this is not a huge national story is beyond me.

Washington Post to Kos Kids: Stop Your Madness, You Are Destroying the Dems!

Report Warns Democrats Not to Tilt Too Far Left

By Thomas B. Edsall
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, October 7, 2005; A07

The liberals' hope that Democrats can win back the presidency by drawing sharp ideological contrasts and energizing the partisan base is a fantasy that could cripple the party's efforts to return to power, according to a new study by two prominent Democratic analysts.

In the latest shot in a long-running war over the party's direction -- an argument turned more passionate after Democrat John F. Kerry's loss to President Bush last year -- two intellectuals who have been aligned with former president Bill Clinton warn that the only way back to victory is down the center.

Democrats must "admit that they cannot simply grow themselves out of their electoral dilemmas," wrote William A. Galston and Elaine C. Kamarck, in a report released yesterday. "The groups that were supposed to constitute the new Democratic majority in 2004 simply failed to materialize in sufficient number to overcome the right-center coalition of the Republican Party."

Since Kerry's defeat, some Democrats have urged that the party adopt a political strategy more like one pursued by Bush and his senior adviser, Karl Rove -- which emphasized robust turnout of the party base rather than relentless, Clinton-style tending to "swing voters."

But Galston and Kamarck, both of whom served in the Clinton White House, said there are simply not enough left-leaning voters to make this a workable strategy. In one of their more potentially controversial findings, the authors argue that the rising numbers and influence of well-educated, socially liberal voters in the Democratic Party are pulling the party further from most Americans.

14 transferthem  Thu, Oct 6, 2005 8:40:49pm

It's news nowadays when a terrorism incident is NOT linked to islamic murderers.

Why do we in the west keep apologising to the muslims for pursuing islamic terrorists? How about the US and its allies automatically respond to any anti western terror incident by closing and destroying mosques and deporting islamic suspects in the country concerned, with the exception of the perpetrators and organisers, who should be tried and executed?

Why don't the Israelis respond to the destruction of Jews, synagogues and religious shrines by arab bacteria by blowing up mosques, starting with the islamic occupying structures on the Temple Mount? Why?

If it brings on the inevitable war between islam and western democracy, so be it. At the moment the west can win a war. In 20 years that might not be so. Let's fight them now and win.

16 stormy  Thu, Oct 6, 2005 8:47:10pm

From Jawa:

Hinrichs' roomate, Fazal M. Cheema, was a Pakistani national and neighbors claim the apartment was a center of activity for Middle Easterners. He is described as a 'really nice guy' by his friends. Unfortunately, all terrorists are described this way by their friends.

Maybe it's just late or something, but I find that last line funny. In all seriousness though, just profiling "Middle Easterners" is becoming less and less important. Lots of "nice guys" out there who are converting to Islam...

17 Fenway_Nation  Thu, Oct 6, 2005 8:50:05pm

Why is this getting swept under the rug? If Heinrichs were simply to commit suicide, he could hook a hose up to his car's tail pipe, blow his head off with an old shotgun (don't tell me those are hard to come by in Oklahoma) or have a seat in the middle of the nearest stretch of busy Union Pacific mainline. Blowing yourself up within 100 yards of a packed football stadium with a compound used in terror attacks throughout the world seems to spell out that he wanted to take others with him in bright billboard-sozed neon letters.

And again, I ask why? I mean, should I even give the MSM the benefit of the doubt as to why they'd be witholding details of this (as opposed to DeLay indictment 2.0 or Lindsey Lohan's car wreck).

I mean...is the MSM holding back because this is still under investigation by law-enforcement? Seeing how much they hate the police and military in general (and by extention, want us to hate the Police and Military unless it's a democrat giving them orders), I find that hard to swallow.

The only other thing I can really think of is that they didn't want a repeat of Oklahoma City 10 years ago when they assumed the attackers were of Middle-Eastern origin early on. So now they're trying compensate by not saying anything other than Tra-la-la-la-la...guys with explosives blows himself up outside of football stadium. Nothing to see here. Happens all the time....be sure to catch the exciting new series Commander in Chief! It's got a chick as the president! Isn't that nifty?.

Either way, this is total bullshit.

18 gunner  Thu, Oct 6, 2005 8:52:52pm

it's only a mater of time, i keep saying. there's going to be some nutjob out there who's gonna do it and succeed. all those with their heads in the mud will just ask, "why." then say, "it's america's fault", and we as americans should be ashamed that it happened and we sould be more understanding.

yeah right! time to start checking under the rugs for these idiots and boot their butts outta here.

19 Abu Maven  Thu, Oct 6, 2005 8:55:33pm

17 Fenway,

The gag order theory doesn't hold up because the local Oklahoma media are reporting openly that he had started attending mosque and other details that suggest Islamic terrorism. See here:
[Link: newsok.com...]

Meanwhile, Boren, the president of OU, just issued a press release saying it would be wrong to suspect people on the basis of religion, as was the case in 1995, when, he states with absolute certainty, WHITE MALES were the culprit.

Now, Boren probably knows the real deal, so I am wondering why he would issue this release, only to later look like an idiot when the Islamic connection is exposed. I wonder if there was no jihad component after all.

Ask yourself who benefits from a "terrorists in the heartland" story? Bush of course and Dems look increasingly like idiots.

Bush gives a speech on terror, it looks increasingly like the Norman OK guy was an Islamic suicide bomber, NYPD issues an alert for terror on the subways, Freeh in his book slams Clinton for ignoring requests to press the Saudis on Khobar and instead hits them up for cash ...

Come one the MSM would rather DIE than make Bush look right. This story would cause Libs to jump lemming-like over a cliff. Can't disrupt Kos's secret plan now can we?

Notice how Graffanino's error on 2nd was lovingly replayed on NESN and ESPN as though it were the second coming of Bill Buckner while A-Rod's equally costly error doesn't even make most highlight reels. It's not even a full year since we won the WS and the sports media (who made a cottage industry off of 'curse' mongering) can't even wait for the Division series to find themselves the next Buckner/Boone/Dent.

"Norman Police: Officer Went 'Above And Beyond'"
by Ryan Welton, Managing Editor

POSTED: 10:05 am CDT October 6, 2005
UPDATED: 7:33 pm CDT October 6, 2005

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NORMAN, Okla. -- Norman police confirmed Thursday that they ran a routine investigation of a 21-year-old University of Oklahoma student who blew himself up on campus Saturday night.

At a 2 p.m. news conference, Norman Police Department spokesman J.D. Younger said an off-duty, plainclothes officer overheard a conversation Joel Henry Hinrichs III had with the proprietor of a Norman feed store last Thursday at 4 p.m. The conversation centered on a purchase of ammonium nitrate fertilizer.

"I think it's important to note that it's not a criminal activity to purchase ammonium nitrate fertilizer," Younger said.

However, he noted that the context of Hinrichs' conversation with a manager of Ellison Feed & Seed was suspicious. Younger indicated that the off-duty officer reported that Hinrichs asked about different types of fertilizer and the concentration of ammonium nitrate in each."

“I’ve never seen (Hinrichs) before, just on the news,” Barakat said.

He did, however, know OU finance major Fazal M. Cheema, Hinrichs’ roommate.

On the night of the explosion, Barakat was visiting friends, including Cheema, at his apartment complex. Around midnight — about four and a half hours after the explosion on the South Oval — Cheema exited the apartment and Barakat said he heard Cheema being taken into custody by Norman Police Department officers, who urged Barakat and the six or seven others to stay inside."

Holy crap on a crutch! Of course they're concerned about public perception! Kinda hard to function in normal circumstances when a backwards doctrine of hatred, mass-murder, anti-semitism and jihad sees the light of day.

I think you nailed it when you said "the MSM would rather DIE than make Bush look right."

As with Rathergate, the bloggers are ultimately going to force the whole thing on to page one.

There is already a move to downplay the threat to New York. In a strange twist I think the media found out about the threat and threatened to run with it, so New York had to report it. Now the media is questioning if the threat warrented mentioning at all.

The MSM is killing our country in their effort to hurt Bush. Why can't everyone see that?

Wake up America we're being manipulated by the very folks we look to for the truth.

As another formerly long-suffering citizen of Red Sox Nation, I'm also disappointed that they've dropped the first two games of the ALDS but (1) this year's team isn't as good as last year's edition, (2) it's not the Yankees they're losing to, and (3) if they are eliminated, I can always pop in my 2004 World Series DVD and still try to fight back the tears when Renteria taps back to Foulke! I first really started following MLB and the Red Sox in 1978, so last year's post-season was a long time coming for me!

I'm guessing it would not be much if his corpse actually remained mostly intact. They'd be counting more on shrapnel for lethal effects. But then again, they'd probably expected a much larger explosion than was rendered.

There was an eyewitness report about his remains immediately after the blast, seen by a student in a nearby building. Basically, there was nothing at all above the waist -- just a charred partial spine protruding about foot above the pelvic bone. His legs had the metal bench behind them as a backing (he was apparently sitting down), so they apparently didn't get completely vaporized as his upper half did.

Anything that's bad for America in general- category 5 hurricane, renewed attacks by baby murdering, throat slitting jihadis and even (God forbid) another attack on US soil- is seen by the media and their lib enablers as a proverbial Louisville Slugger to hack away at the current administration. Meanwhile, people ask me in that condescending tone "You don't actually think the media is biased in some way, do you?" OR "If the media is biased, then it obviously is towards the right"

Yes, I provide the link on my site. Here it is directly:

small round holes in nearby tree -- eyewitness report.

Your version of it isn't exactly accurate -- the person saw the holes left by the shrapnel, but not much of the shrapnel itself.

Pretty good, although in both DVDs the emphasis was on Yankees vs Red Sox at the expense of overlooking some of the other memorable regular season matchups (like David Wells returning to Fenway to face off against Pedro as part of an interleague series with the Padres).

Still, it's still pretty damn funny watching E-Rod trying to push around Tek.....

50 Cognosus  Thu, Oct 6, 2005 10:22:40pm

An email to all OU students from President Boren, Chief Dhimmi of Multiculturalism:

Dear OU Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I want to thank you again for your responsible and constructive reaction to the tragic event which occurred last Saturday evening. I appreciate the concern which many of you have expressed for the family and friends of the deceased.

Most of the news media, including our own OU Daily, and most citizens have responded very responsibly. Unfortunately, there are always a few who do not. Among the core beliefs which define us as Americans and which define us as members of the OU family from all backgrounds is a respect for others. We believe that we should not judge others or jump to conclusions about others on the basis of color, race, gender, economic status, or freely exercised religious beliefs. To rush to judge others or make assumptions about them on that basis is nothing short of prejudice. It has no place in America and it certainly has no place at the University of Oklahoma.

Unfortunately, we have seen examples of a rush to react in a manner not in keeping with our values in recent history. A reading of some media reports and comments from individuals made at the time of the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City is enlightening. Some quickly rushed to the conclusion that the bomber must have been a Middle Eastern terrorist. There were video shots of international students on Oklahoma campuses shown on news broadcasts as this speculation was reported. As we all now know, the person responsible was not someone from the Middle East but was Timothy McVeigh and at least one other American who assisted him. We can only hope that all of us, including some media outlets, would have learned from that recent rush to incorrect conclusions.

I have been assured that law enforcement officials including federal officers have found no evidence of a conspiracy involving others which creates an ongoing threat to our OU community. They have kept me informed of the steps being taken in their investigation. You can be assured that if I receive any information to the contrary, I will immediately inform you and take steps to protect our community.

In fact, national law enforcement statistics compiled confirm that we have a low per capita crime rate. OU has long been dedicated to the safety of our students.

Thank you again for your help and understanding. Thank you for reaching out to the members of our OU family who have come from nations all over the world to let them know that they are valued and respected on this campus.

Rushing to judgments on the basis of race, religion, gender, or ethnicity, is not the OU or American way.

Sincerely,

David L. Boren
OU President

You need to pass dozens of U.N. resolutions and send in inspectors to spend years getting locked out of everything before judging. You need to have your planes shot at continuously in the no fly zone before you can judge. You have to --

Born in Chicago.

Sorry for jumping to conclusions there- I spent last weekend in Westchester County flanked by nervous Yankee fans. The thing is, they were nervous after clinching the AL east, rooting for Boston to lose Sunday, the Tribe to win, force a one game playoff and eliminate the BoSox. One of them came right out and said they didn't trust the Yankees to beat the Red Sox anymore and their best chance to advance was if Boston were eliminated from the playoffs altogether. Now I'm sure they're rooting for the ChiSox and looking past the Angels.

Thanks Zombie....I was beginning to think I was imagining it. Of course, even if news of this does break, I think the MSM is hoping the public in general will overlook this self-detonation altogether.

fenway nation your daddy lives in Chi town?

61 hazy  Fri, Oct 7, 2005 12:30:32am

It may not have been a self detonation. It was in a backpack, and probably had a remote detonater (cellphone). A co-conspirator likely would have had the number to set it off and did it as a last resort. Also, the TATP is unstable and could have self detonated. The original plan was probably to use the TATP to detonate the ammonium nitrate-fuel oil bomb. They must have financing at $3.00+/gallon they would have had a chunk of change in their big bomb.

62 GordonMcStraun  Fri, Oct 7, 2005 12:41:36am

If point number 3 on Zombies site is true, then it is strongly indicative or a genuine attempt at a suicide bombing that was thwarted by basic security.

#61 Is correct, suicide bombers often have a 'mentor' who supports the bomber during his training and escorts him to his target. His final job is to remotely detonate the bomb should the bomber lose his nerve. An example of which might be running away from a security search rather than blowing up there and then.

This story is a tricky one, since so much is speculation. Realistically we will have to wait for the FBI report.

Unfortunately this comment will be searchable and cut/paste "proof" that he speaks like that.

66 RoughRider  Fri, Oct 7, 2005 2:04:24am
Pretty good, although in both DVDs the emphasis was on Yankees vs Red Sox at the expense of overlooking some of the other memorable regular season matchups (like David Wells returning to Fenway to face off against Pedro as part of an interleague series with the Padres).

I noticed that too.... Lots of time spent on the Red Sox comeback in the ALCS with almost a "Yeah, they played an NLCS too. Here's the last out." treatment of the Cardinals advancing to the World Series, and it could be that Red Sox/Yankees got more time than Red Sox/Cardinals.... which is fine with me!

67 Quilly Mammoth  Fri, Oct 7, 2005 2:08:25am

A local (Tulsa) talk show host spoke to a member of the "Triangle" fraternity. He asked when Hinrich began to grow his beard.

This was apparently a recent look.

Multiple sources have verfied that he was turned away from game, that a police officer overheard the AN conversation, and that the bomb left a _lot_ of scrapnel.

My graduate-level IT Security class discussed this topic last evening at Hopkins. We were talking about 'latest news' on IT Security procedures and used the Sooner Bomber as an example of deterrence.

Basically, last week NORMAN, OK WAS conducting searches of people entering the game. This deterred the Hinrichs III guy from entering and offing some fans. The game before, U Oklahoma WAS NOT CONDUCTING SEARCHES of people entering the staduim. The decision to search saved a lot of lives. Even my idiotarian classmates knew about the nails, too. Yeah to an informed public. Yeah to LGF.

What do you mean "inevitable?" It's not inevitable, it's already here; and it's about time the West accepts that fact and starts to do something serious about it. You can't win a war if you don't admit that you're in one.

all I can figure, and this is my Optomistic Moment of the Day:

1984: Assassination of CIA station Chief, William Buckley, in Beirut by Islamic Jihad. Bombing of restaurant in Spain kills 18 USAF personnel. US Embassy bombed in Beirut by Hezbollah, 23 dead with US and British Ambassadors injured.
1985: TWA hijacking by Hezbollah leaves one US Navy diver dead. Hijacking of Achille Lauro by Palestinan Liberation Front results in the murder of American Leon Klinghoffer who body, along with his wheelchair, is thrown overboard.
1986: Bombing of Berlin nightclub by Libyan-sponsored terrorists leaves 2 US service people dead and 79 injured.
1988: Kidnapping, torture, and murder of Marine Corps Lt. Colonel William Higgens by Hezbollah. Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 by Libyan-backed terrorists.
1993: 1st World Trade Center bombing. Attempted assassination of former President George Bush in Kuwait.
1996: Khobar Towers bombing in Dharan, Saudi Arabia kills 19 US servicemen. Linked to Al-Qaeda.
1997: Palestinan gunmen opens fire on observation deck of the Empire State Building, killing one.
1998: Embassy bombings in East Africa. Linked to Al-Qaeda.
2000: USS Cole bombing kills 17. Linked to Al-Qaeda.

17 Fenway--i have come to think that the msm and the LLLs think this war on alqueds and islam is just a Bush family plan and GOP plan for power. They think the whole terrorist meme is either created by the power structure as a black ops, or manipulation and enhancement of a few incidents to the power structure's ends.
I don't know if there is an over-arching 'power structure' behind the scenes.
It may be that humans are too flawed to create the huge secret conspiracy like the donks and the press think. (like, can't keep a secret beyond 3 people)
So The press and the LLLs sneer at the whole jihadi thing as a con, as crap that GWB and his dad and Cheney are playing as a trick.
There is no in-depth reporting. There is no covering links of incidents (like Atlas Shrugged listed last night on a thread.)
Block out any images that might get public concerned or mad ar galvanized for action.
Never show the 9/11 video or the whole thing in Manhatttan much so people forget.

No, you're right. I should have been more specific. The PC correlation is 100% since Boren took over. I'm surprised OU alumni have allowed some of the crap to go on but when Boren brings in the big bucks like he has, eyes seem to turn away from the political correctness. Money talks at universities.

Last time I was in Norman to see a buddy, it seemed to becoming more like the Austin campus (without the pretty hill country). The whole atmosphere had changed from my college days when OU was rowdy as hell and a lot of fun.

105 niall  Fri, Oct 7, 2005 6:22:37am

The idea we shouldn't "jump to conclusions" because the OKC bombing was initially thought to have been Arabs is not logical. In that case we didn't immediately "know" who delivered the bomb or why. In this case we know exactly who blew up.

What we don't know with certainty is Hinrich's motivation. There is a lot of good circumstantial evidence suggesting he was a "work accident" and very little supporting the suicide theory. It's not "jumping to conclusions", it's making a reasonable inference.

What past experience do we have of people with backpacks that go boom? What experience of people who just want to kill themselves? Of these two things, which more closely matches the facts we have so far? Barring an explanation not yet offered up, it sure looks like the Jihadi explanation is in the lead.

So why can't we talk about the most likely available explanation? We could speculate about the extremist religious motivations of Eric Rudolph, another white male, before he was captured and prosecuted so what makes Hinrichs' case different?

106 nofreelunch  Fri, Oct 7, 2005 6:25:23am

NORMAN - The University of Oklahoma did not sell a football ticket to the OU student who apparently blew himself up outside the stadium during a game Saturday, a university spokeswoman said Thursday.

Joel “Joe” Henry Hinrichs III is believed to have died in an explosion about 7:30 p.m. Saturday on a campus bench about 100 yards from Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, which was packed with about 84,000 fans at the time. Investigators are treating the death as a suicide.

University spokeswoman Catherine Bishop said OU officials have reviewed their ticket records and determined that Hinrichs did not buy a football ticket from any university outlet.

She said university officials have heard nothing to indicate Hinrichs attempted to buy a ticket from one of the fans selling tickets outside the stadium.

The FBI has reviewed surveillance tapes taken by cameras around the stadium. OU President David Boren said Tuesday that, so far, agents have found nothing to indicate Hinrichs tried to enter.

"Student recounts talk with worker"
Tulsa World ^ | 10/07/2005 | Mick Hinton

Posted on 10/07/2005 7:04:52 AM PDT by indcons

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NORMAN -- An incident related by a ticket taker at Saturday's OU-Kansas State game raises questions about whether a student who died in a suicide explosion tried to gain entrance to Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

But University of Oklahoma officials continue to deny that Joel Henry Hinrichs III tried to enter the stadium before dying about 100 yards away.

OU student Adam Smith said Thursday that he was approached as he was leaving the stadium Saturday by a ticket taker from Gate 6 who wanted to know what had happened.

Smith said he told the gate worker that there had apparently been an explosion outside the stadium and someone had been blown up.

"He gave me a wide-eyed look, and said: 'Oh, that's really strange,' " Smith said. The ticket taker recounted that a young man who looked strange and was wearing a backpack that looked full tried to get into the stadium.

However, when he was asked to open his backpack, "the guy didn't say a word and sprinted away," Smith said he was told.

Vice President of Communications Catherine Bishop said OU officials have "been assured that there is no validity to the Gate 6 rumor." Bishop said the story has been checked out by the university's athletic department.

Meanwhile, the FBI continued to have no new comments on the case Thursday."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "It was only hours after Joel Henry Hinrichs III blew himself up Oct. 1 near 84,000 football fans at the University of Oklahoma when federal officials claimed he was just a troubled young man with no links to terrorists.

But then yesterday the U.S. Department of Justice asked a federal court in Oklahoma City to seal the search warrant officials there used to get into the apartment Hinrichs’ shared with three or four students described by neighbors as “Arab-looking men.”
