John Bolton. The UN without him is a scary thought.

2 thedopefishlives  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:26:10am

I love all these people, but Mr. Bolton is The Man (tm). I don't know too many people who can even stomach UN public statements, let alone sitting inside that den of evil and holding his own.

3 Pickle  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:26:44am

Let's give it to Bolton. Same reason as Anan--Bolton deserves a proper retirement gift as well, only this time for honourable service rather than being humanity's worst disgrace.

Where is Oriana herself? WAhhhhhh! Oh, and Victor Davis Hanson?

6 Elric66  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:28:03am

Tougher decision but had to go with Ayaan Hirsi Ali . Any vote is a correct one, they are deserving.

7 Kragar (proud to be kafir)  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:28:13am

BOLTON FTW!

8 newsjunkie_ky  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:29:14am

John Bolton is the only man with balls who stood up to the idiots at the UN.

The country will suffer now that he will no longer be there for us.

9 ziggy  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:29:26am

LOVE Bolton, but Hirsi Ali has actually put her life on the line and is cursed to always looking over her shoulder.

10 transient  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:29:36am

This is truly a difficult decision. There are so many worthy candidates.
But I am glad the award is called the Oriana.

11 ziggy  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:30:28am

By the way, Rick Santorum should have made the list.

Bolton is a great man with unwavering principles but he isnt a miracle worker. We should cut off funds until it cleans up its act.

13 blue_like_jazz  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:31:10am

charles,

why is it the "oriana" instead of the "fallaci"?

"fiskie" and "fallaci" sound good together!

Where is Oriana herself? WAhhhhhh! Oh, and Victor Davis Hanson?

Oriana is the implicit 'zeroth' winner of the award that bears her name. This is a competition to earn the right to be associated with her.

VDH is OK, but I wanted to vote for Regis Bolton. Since the 'stache wasn't up there, I voted for John instead.

15 Geepers  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:31:50am

Canadian PM Stephen Harper makes a strong case, but I'd like to recognize all those Canadians that put him in a position to be heard.

16 bluestater  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:32:20am

Howard over Bolton by a hair

17 rastajenk  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:33:21am

I think the fact that Bolton had to go to work everyday amidst idiotarians or worse gives him the advantage. All are good choices, but he has been the tip o' the spear.

18 Golden Jerusalem  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:34:29am

Stephen Harper (because that's so unexpected from a Canadian PM to be an anti-idiotarian).

Kofi Annan. May be his last nomination, who knows. God knows he deserves the Fiskie for his exploits this year alone.

On another note, interesting things are happening in Somalia.

*Somalia UPDATE*

Ethiopians Closing In On Capital of Somalia
Islamic Militias Vow Stiff Defense As War Intensifies

By Stephanie McCrummen
Washington Post Foreign Service
Wednesday, December 27, 2006; Page A01

LONDON, Dec. 26 -- Ethiopian troops fought their way closer to the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Tuesday, pushing back militias loyal to the Islamic Courts movement that has until now controlled much of the country and has vowed to wage a guerrilla war against Ethiopia lasting "years and years and years."

Aid workers said the number of injured had surpassed 800, as thousands of civilians battered by drought, floods and now rockets and mortars continued to flee villages in droves.

WAPO story

Somalia: Situation Report - 28 Dec 2006

Main Developments

The heavy fighting of the last eight days has abated, with Ethiopian/TFG forces now controlling much of southern Somalia. After taking Jowhar in Middle Shabelle yesterday morning, Ethiopian/TFG forces moved south into Balad (north or Mogadishu) and Afgoi (northwest of Mogadishu). These two towns are strategically important as they lie on the two main roads leading to the capital. Ethiopian/TFG forces are now on the outskirts of Mogadishu. ICU forces have retreated from the capital, handing over their weapons and technicals to clan militia, and several ICU leaders are said to have left Mogadishu. This movement resulted in a temporary power vacuum in the city, with the presence of freelance militia and looting reported. However, traditional elders are discussing how best to secure the town and have reportedly been in contact with the TFG. Displacement from Mogadishu is occurring though the scale is as yet unknown. Elsewhere, Bay and Bakool regions (including Wajid and Baidoa) are reported to be calm, as are Jowhar and all other areas newly under the control of the TFG.

ReliefWeb linky

Finally, here's a decent map of Somalia.

Latest appears to be that the jihadis have fled the capital. The Ethiopian president is boasting that his troops may have killed as many as 3,000 islamists.

I sure hope his figures are accurate.

19 billhedrick  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:36:24am

All are good candidates, but since Ayaan is actually risking her life without a safety net, like Oriana, I voted for her.

20 Bill Dalasio  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:36:38am

#11 ziggy,

Sorry, but Santorum does not deserve to be on the list. While his heart is usually in the right place, he had an unerring gift of screwing up arguments. He was literally a guy who could make approving of Mom and apple pie sound ridiculous and offensive.

21 Axiom  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:37:10am

I voted for Wafa Sultan.

Excuse my ignorance, who is "Stuck Mojo"?

22 GregInSeattle  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:37:26am

Tough call between a lot of good choices. It boiled down to John Bolton and Mark Steyn (I just finished his book last night, it's great), but I gave Bolton my vote. Next year for Steyn!

23 shtetlg  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:37:52am

I'm going with Ayaan Ali Hirsi. She put her life on the line to talk some sense in Holland and her reward was exile. She upholds the traditions of Western society more than most native born Europeans.

Plus she's hot.

24 RTLM  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:37:57am

PM John Howard - consistently right on the money, he's currently in office as Head of State and much more influential. Bolton is my #2 only because he's now sidelined.

25 akak  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:37:57am
Resistance Committees: Weapons we received to be used against Israel

A spokesman for the Resistance Committees, Muhammad Abu al-Aal, told Ynet that the arms that have been transferred from Egypt to the Gaza Strip will be used against Israel.

"We promise to show the Israelis very soon how the weapons they have given to the presidential guard and the security forces are turned against the occupation," he said.

26 mad_scientist  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:40:07am

27 Golem Akbar  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:40:51am

I love them all. We need more like the people on the list, many more, actually. I voted for Hirsi Ali, but any of them would be good...no great.

28 blue_like_jazz  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:40:59am

Robert Spencer people..www>jihad.org

30 iminj  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:42:49am

This is really a tough choice.

I really think there are 2 classes of anti-idiotarians here, and I wish we could recognize them separately (at some point in the future, perhaps?)

On one hand we have those Western born and bred leaders who have the guts to push aside the prevailing PC headwinds, and speak the truth. Indeed it takes a certain amount of bravery to do this - and these leadership qualities are laudable, and very worthy of recognition.

However, how can we compare this with the incredible guts it takes for a woman born inside the islamic world to stand up and speak out (at immense personal risk) against the insanity?

I say we think about 2 separate award categories next year.

(my 2 cents)

31 storagemanager  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:44:22am

Robert Spencer like Charles Johnson puts it on the line to get the message out [Link: www.jihadwatch.org...]

32 Rancher  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:45:06am

Is that one vote per day or one vote total?

OT- DEBKA file has a report that the Mujahiddin Brigades units that are firing Al Buraq 2 rockets into Israel at a rate greater than two a day, despite a so called truce, are commanded by an Iranian Revolutionary Guards officer.

33 rabidsquirrel  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:45:25am

After careful consideration, my vote goes to Wafa Sultan. What it ultimately came down to for me was "Who has the most to lose in the course of being an anti-idiotarian?" That narrowed it down to Wafa and Hirsi Ali, IMHO. Wafa's tireless confrontation of Islamic repression is what ultimately sealed the deal, though Hirsi Ali comes in a close second, with Bolton garnering the honorable mention for his unwaivering attempts to inject honor and righteousness into an organization appallingly lacking in both.

34 mad_scientist  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:46:51am

did a google search on stuck mojo, and found some band. why did they make the anti-idiotarian list?

36 ibn Abu  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:50:07am

Wow, what a tough call. I gave it to Wafa just for her cojones but any one of these would be a very worthy winner.

37 uptight  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:50:10am

Well I voted for John Howard. I was going to vote for Wafa Sultan, but Howard is more of an all-round anti-idiotarian.

Thanks to this poll, I discovered Stuck Mojo.

Brilliant

38 Cognito  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:50:48am

9 Ziggy,

Yes, I agree. Hirsi Ali by a mile, for me. She has stood so boldly that she has literally been made country-less, and lives in danger.

She's brave.

39 P. Aaron  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:51:39am

Don't you just want to kick Voinovich in the ass real hard right now? That peice of fecal screwed up Bolton's nomination the first time around.

I just think that Robert Spencer has the knowledge and has proposed some ways to deal with the problem of the ideology of islam that, if spread across the planet, could make a huge difference. Inevitably, it's gonna come down to this (Ω) , I'm afraid.

Howard. Bush should have such courage and conviction. ( and I'm a Bush fan.)

45 aqvik  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:55:45am

Robert Spencer has been speaking out for years and years. His latest book, The Truth About Mohammed, is a must read.

Thanks!

47 new_tommy  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:57:26am

Spencer has done more than anyone to wake people up to the dangers posed by Islam, IMO. He ought to win it, though with Bolton, Wafa, Hirsi Ali, Melanie Phillips, Howard, and Harper, he has some great competition. They all deserve our respect and recognition.

48 Golden Jerusalem  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:57:46am

Interesting strategic note on Somalia and the current Ethiopian campaign there.

When Megistu's marxist dictatorship collapsed in Ethiopia in 1991, the Eritrea province seceded.

This meant, among other things, that Ethiopia became landlocked.

Only viable transport routes for the country would depend on ports in Djibouti or Kenya, as relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea are not warm (unless fighting a bloody war counts as warm).

The Ethiopians might have as a strategic goal to get access to seaports in Somalia, which they can control either directly or via a friendly government in Mogadishu.

This might alleviate logistics problems Ethiopia has faced since the secession of Eritrea.

I wish them the best of luck hanging in there fighting the jihadi scum.

49 LoFlyer  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:57:47am

After careful consideration of all the worthy anti-idiatron candidates, my vote had to go to John Bolton. Although Bush was the one who had the sense to appoint him to the UN, Bush's political correctness is his major weakness. Bolton told the UN and the world the truth, and the Democrats are getting their reward by pulling Bolton. Didn't know Bolton said he did not have evidence to prosecute the terrorist who murdered our diplomats in '73. From Boltons history, I assume that the state department blocked Boltons access to the documents needed for prosecution.

50 goodbye_natalie  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:58:28am

Almost as difficult as choice as the idiots. Being the American, jingoistic, racist, Islamophobe that I am, I went with the American over the Aussie. Both Bolton and Howard are deserving...in fact, I don't mind seeing any of them win!

51 storagemanager  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:58:38am

52 wrenchwench  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:59:29am

If there is such a thing as a well-deserved unfair advantage, that's what you have given Ayaan Hirsi Ali. The American Enterprise Institute, in their alphabetical list of Scholars and Fellows, lists her under "h". Then, on her own page, she shows some more of her unfair advantages: a beautiful portrait.

She got my vote, partly for the risk to her life, as others have mentioned. On that score, Wafa Sultan and Robert Spencer were my runners-up.

53 TMF  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 10:59:30am

Steyn.

The mans eloquent

One of the few outspoken and prolific "guys like us" out there in MSM land tellin' it like it is- with humour and a cool brit accent to boot

Besides Ann Coulter, no one is capable of ripping the innanities of the left/Dem/MSM alliance like Steyn

54 Montaigne's Cat  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 11:00:10am

The Canadian and Australian PMs show there is still hope for the Anglosphere.
Benedict shows there is still an ember of hope in Europe.
And Robert Spencer is a very important researcher.
John Bolton is great and maybe he will be a Senator in two years.
But I must vote for Ayaan Hirsi Ali because she has global significance.

the Koskidz (and CAIR) support the Somali Taliban...
The de jure government of Somalia

This question of legitimacy goes to the heart of this war. If you consider the support of the people represented by the government, then the debate is over - the Islamic Courts are the only legitimate government because they are the only ones who represent the people of Somalia.

Faster that you can say, "Reflexive anti-Americanism"

He did a great job shrewdly stonewalling the security council when they wanted an immediate unilateral ceasefire by Israel

He personally bought Israel at least 2 weeks of slamming Hizbollah to ribbons (albiet not conclusively :(

Oh yeah- and the fact that dipshit golddigger Joe Biden- the worlds biggest nobody who will never be president- hates him is a big PLUS in my book

Stuck Mojo won't win, and there are certainly more deserving names on the list - but they merit a bigger chunk of the vote than they have at the moment, so my vote goes there.

Seems Bolton is going to win in a landslide anyway.

63 salivating moron  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 11:04:57am

I struggled between Bolton and Howard. Finally deciding upon Bolton.

Rationale: Fallaci is described as "tenacious" - a trait more descriptive of Bolton.

Should Bolton prevail and be unable to fulfill his duties as the winner, then Howard should fill the gap quite nicely.

Voted for Ayaam Hirsi Ali. The women lost a close friend to the Muslim extremists, lost her seat in the Danish congress for confronting radical Islam head on, lost her home and had to move to America for the same reason.
She is a women who put her money where her mouth is and is facing a much greater physical threat then most of the others on the list.

My vote goes for Wafa Sultan, she gets my vote just for that fabulous bearded-monkey-in-suit smackdown she did earlier in the year (if you haven't seen, search on Memri, I've forwarded everywhere!).
If I could have another vote, I would go for Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Both of this women tell it how it is and should be heard!

And yes, I also wish I could vote for Mark Steyn, a tremendously amusing and well-spoken Idiotarian, I look forward to all of his columns.

But they're all a fabulous bunch!

Canadian PM Stephen Harper makes a strong case, but I'd like to recognize all those Canadians that put him in a position to be heard.

I am no longer ashamed to admit that I am Canadian.

99 Damnyanqui  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 11:40:51am

Definitely Harper, because his emergence is such a dramatic, surprising, relief from wifty wimpy politically correct CANADA!
Howard has been great, but the Aussies have always been pretty good anti idiotarians.
Bolton... ah, what could have been, but he's a casualty of the mass insanity of the 2006 elections.
Ayan... too bad she's stuck making a nice living at a think tank. She should have stuck to her guns and fought the terrorists on the front lines where she was, especially after she basically WON that stupid political fight.
The Pope is doing what the Pope should do, but his position requires too much restraint to be a real crusader (Pardon the expression. Note the lower case "c") for sanity.

But to see Canada... once one of the world's great champions against evil... the country that stepped up before the US when it came time to face the Nazis... to see Canada try to reclaim some of its strength and once-resolute moral high ground... It's inspiring.
Europe may be lost beyond redemption, but at least the country on the other side of America's longest and least-defended border is showing some signs of standing up for civilization.

Give'em hell Harper!

100 ibrodsky  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 11:43:40am

I can't see Bolton winning. Nice guy, but he worked for Condi Rice in Kofi Annan's irrelevant den of thieves.

The anti-Idiotarian should be someone who really gets what's happening and is either sounding the alarm or leading the fight.

Harper, Howard, Spencer, and Steyn were my finalists. Having just read America Alone, I think Steyn sees the big picture better than the rest.

101 Farmer Joe  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 11:44:39am

Bolton deserves it and will probably win, but I'm tempted to vote for Stuck Mojo just because it's nice to see someone in the lefty-dominated world of pop culture stand up and say what needs to be said. And where are you going to find that, especially if you're not wild about country music.

(Y'know, a thought occurs: Ted Nugent is on the right side, and knows a thing or two about promoting rock bands. Anyone know if SM is on the Tedster's radar?)

Thomas Sowell

[Link: article.nationalreview.com...]

People in the media, in academia, and among the intelligentsia in general who are obsessed with “disparities” in income and wealth usually show not the slightest interest in how that income and wealth were produced in the first place.

They are hot to redistribute the existing income and wealth but seem wholly unaware that how you do that today can affect how much income and wealth will be produced tomorrow. Any number of schemes for redistributing wealth have ended up redistributing poverty in a number of countries.

“Progressives” in the media and among academics and intellectuals claim to be interested in ending poverty but the production of more output is the only way to end poverty for millions of people.

Choices, choices choices!
I guess i have to ask what ANti-idiotarian really means, cause to me its someone who leads the charge against Islamic cultural imperialism. I dont see Bolton as really doing that he just deals with the UN nudnicks BUT the UN is useless anyway so any progress made there aint that a big deal IMHO. The people who have put their lives on the line to expose Islam for the death cult that it is and to kick the ass of all the islam apologists and terror sympatheizers. Also to generally educate the ignorant masses about Islam and bring truth to an other wise one sided discussion about what Islam really teaches. SO, I would say Ali or Shoebat or SPencer or The Pope or the danish cartoonists. These are the people that are really turning the tide of public opinion against ROPers and leftist appeasers.

#82 ziggy,

Again, I'm not trashing the guy. His heart really is in the right place. But, he pretty much never fails to flub an argument. Now its easy enough to blame this on the media, for whom Santorum was a favorite target. But any anti-idiotarian in the spotlight has to expect he's going to get the shakedown. Instead, we get Santorum sounding like he's comparing gays to pedophiles and practitioners of bestiality, or Santorum sounding like he's saying the President doesn't care about national security. Yeah, I know. That's not what he meant. But it's still the way he ends up sounding to the public.

all y'all voting for bolton might want to check this out:

bolton says: "not enough evidence to prosecute"

(Arafat in 1986)

Yeah, well, look, "prosecute" was never the proper option anyway, and even knowing this stuff, Bubba and Israel (Rabin? Peres?) brought Arafish back to power in, um, when was it now, 1993? Anyway, recently, Bolton has labored and suffered and lead in the cause.

... though maybe Howard would have been a better use of my vote, now that I think about it, he's been both a talker and a doer. Ah well, it's not like there's a big cash award at stake here.

138 Ojoe  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 2:15:06pm

Savage is brilliant but also he is a professional grouch, IMHO, and listening to him too much can sap you into a kind of pessimisim that will not produce results or convince people of things.

In that negative sense he is like Amy Goodman of Pacifica Radio.

139 squarepeg  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 2:16:20pm

I'm steering clear of the obvious and going for someone who is neither an actual policy-making, events-shaping political type, nor a professional opinion-pronouncer like a journalist or professor. Not that those are bad things, just that they're obvious.

So I voted for Stuck Mojo.

1.1%, all riiiiight!

140 shug  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 2:28:33pm

I can't understand the huge bolton vote.

What did he actually accomplish in one year? Very little.

John Howard is the leader of a nation which is standing up for their culture and is the leader in the fight against Islamofascism.

anyway, just my opinion. I can see based on the recent vote tally that I am in the minority

141 arch  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 2:34:02pm

Charles, put Oriana Fallaci back on this list, as she was on the "primary" ballot you posted a couple of days ago. You've already got 63 names on this list, so why not include the woman for whom this anti-Idiotarian award is informally named? I won't vote in this poll until she shows up on the ballot...and then I'm voting for HER!

142 Ojoe  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 2:37:24pm

Yes, this will be the last year that Ms. Fallaci can actually be the anti-idiotarian "of the year" because she was alive during this actual year. Next year, well, no. So it's her last chance.

PM John Howard - consistently right on the money, he's currently in office as Head of State and much more influential.

John Winston (his parents respected one of the greatest Anti-Idiotarians) HOWARD is actually the Head of our Government. The Head of State is Queen of Australia ELIZABETH II (since 6 February 1952), represented by Governor General Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Michael JEFFERY (since 11 August 2003)-(General Jeffery is an Australian)

It may seem a minor point to non Aussies but the Monarchist/Republican supporters in Oz can get quite heated over the issue.

I voted for the Liberal candidate for my seat in the last Federal election (he lost). The Liberal/National Coalition, which holds a majority in the House of Representatives, is lead by John Howard. He is elected by the Coalition Members of Parliament.

We do not directly elect our Head of Government and the Governor General is appointed by the Queen, by convention, on recommendation of the Head of Government. There, I'm sure you really wanted to know that!

Anyway, Howard gets my vote. A man who has been ahead of his times for many years; and he went to my old High School - Canterbury Boys' High.

145 reader  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 3:36:46pm

So many worthy choices here. How I see it, Robert Spencer is probably the most effective teacher in the anti-jihad movement, and right now that is what we need more than anything, if for nothing else, then to cut through the thick-as-fog PC that envelopes almost all public discussion and allows open deceit to flourish, to be given equal regard. I don't think there is any author that is turning more heads, nor opening more eyes to the true nature of Islam. Where I think Spencer really distinguished himself this year is in taking on Muhammad as full subject. That took extraordinary courage, as well as tenacity. The fact that he can so skillfully explicate this person, separating the legend and object of sanctimony from the true history and their real character while relying entirely on Islamic sources, is testimony to his strength of will, in not giving into a measured bias, nor surrendering to easy, more comfortable explanations, conclusions that too often are used to excuse or dismiss Islam, when Islam is the only reasonable explanation left standing, as he so often has taught us.

So, to Mr Spencer, let me just say thank you. I look forward to reading your next book, which you just announced will be a comparison between Islam and Christianity. Let me also say that I hope some day you write a book on sharia and what it could mean for the non-Muslim world.

Yeah! What he said.

147 phillygirl  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 4:06:14pm

Bolton is allowed to change his mind. After all, it's been 18 years since that article was published. He probably knows a lot more now about Arafat and crew than he was allowed to know in 1988.

148 rickl  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 4:10:56pm

I voted for Mark Steyn. It was a tough call. I just read Robert Spencer's "Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam". He was a worthy choice too. And people like Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Wafa Sultan are literally putting their lives on the line, as has been pointed out earlier.

But Steyn probably has a wider readership, and is probably more influential than the others. And he can be downright hilarious at times. So I guess that was the tie-breaker for me.

I've got nothing against John Bolton, but I can't understand why he is running away with this one. He's no longer at the UN, so he can't be very influential now.

149 egoist  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 4:11:46pm

That Bolton couldn't even get a vote in the Senate speaks well of him.

150 new_tommy  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 5:21:33pm

Hirsi Ali, Wafa Sultan, and Melanie Phillips are all indispensable (along with Oriana Fallaci, Hugh Fitzgerald, Bruce Bawer, Andrew Bostom, Bat Ye'or, and others) but I honestly would have never even heard of any of them or cared for what they had to say without my interest in the true nature of Islam first being peaked by The Man himself:

Robert Spencer: Godfather of the Counterjihad.

The man deserves your vote.

151 garycooper  Thu, Dec 28, 2006 5:55:40pm

Bolton looks like a lock, right now. I can't really argue with that, except on the grounds that his stalwart representation of the US at the UN doesn't seem to make much of a dent, in practical terms.

I like Robert Spencer a lot, too, as I read all his books this year, and followed his website's dogged pursuit of the enemy.

In the end, though, I cast my vote for Mark Steyn. I just read "America Alone," last week, and it's an epic piece of work. Plus, Steyn is such a brilliant stylist, he makes it fun to read, even when you're reading about things that make you want to pull your hair out. I'm glad he's so prolific, 'cuz a day without Steyn, is like a day without sunshine, being shone into the darkest corners of the enemy's caves.

Congrats to all of these nominees, for being brave and independent enough to go against the MSM grain, and take the heat that goes with it.

I was torn between John Bolton and Wafa Sultan. Wafa Sultan has the guts to stand up to Muslim clerics and give the criticism that they rightly deserve. Bolton does the same toward the UN.

I have often heard about courage for opposing Bush. Yeah, right. It takes zero courage to oppose Bush, but enormous courage to stand up to Arab and Muslim spokesmen and point out the ills and failings of the Muslim world including REAL APARTHEID, REAL BIGOTRY and REAL GENOCIDE.

They and many more are just great. It was a difficult choice, but I picked Australian PM John Howard because I have folowed what he says and he is standing up to the Muslims in his country with great courage.

Bolton is great, but but Howard can be politically hurt by his stand.

100 cheers for all of them. I love all of them.

159 Bunny1941  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 4:11:37am

These are quite wonderful. It amazes me that the left wing media can maintain that we are stupid when we have people of this calibre on our side. But my votes goes for Melanie Phillips. That a leftist who writes for the British MSM should be one of us deserves special recognition.

160 American Jewess in Jerusalem  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 4:36:26am

Oh man, this was so difficult!

On the one hand, Bolton was really on the front lines and dealing with a lot of pressure, but he stood up as strong as steel. I admire the heck out of him.

Then there is Robert Spencer, who has worked tirelessly to get the word out, with books, blog entries, and personal appearances. Kol hakavod to him. Kudos also to Mark Steyn and Melanie Phillips, though perhaps not to the same degree as Spencer.

The Australian and Canadian PMs showed integrity and courage rare to politicians these days. I hope that other politicians will be inspired by their good example.

I don't know Stuck Mojo . . .

The Pope did not impress me -- sorry. He backpedalled like nobody's business. Perhaps I do not understand the wisdom of his choices yet, but I will need to see "more" before he would ever get my vote, or even get on this list.

Hirsi Ali has certainly suffered and she faced numerous death threats; that's gotta be pretty scary.

But my vote, as difficult as it was to choose, goes to Dr. Wafa Sultan. She also faced death threats and continues to face them, yet she went up against the crazy imams on international television. She faced the enemy directly and publically. G-d bless you, Wafa Sultan.

I'm sure that ALL of these people have received death threats from the Religion of Peace practitioners, but somehow, I think the monsters would really relish getting Dr. Sultan. And since she witnessed with her own eyes the murder of her professor at the hands of the ROPers, I just think her bravery is greater because she KNOWS the enemy and she knew exactly what danger she was inviting when she chose to honor her integrity instead of cave in to fear.

I went with Bolton although he's pretty much tied with Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Bolton has been amazing at the UN and the fact that he's now out of that job is a crime.

I hope I have a chance to vote for Ali again next time.

It is a difficult call, I am a huge fan of Mark Steyn and have been since I discovered him here at LGF six years ago. My vote would normally be automatic for him but...

Wafa Sultan's personal bravery is magnificent. She has put her life at risk to say the simple truth. She gets my vote.

Here's what I told Leslie Stahl was the most underreported story of 2006:

The way certain terrorists manipulate the media. And I don't just mean the dead-baby juggling and strategic "fake ruins placing" by Hezbollah in Lebanon - or even the resultant Reuters scandal of the PhotoShopped bombing. I mean things like the fact that the so-called "Jenin Massacre" turned out to be a lie and no one ever apologized for insisting that it was, right up until the moment it was proven otherwise; the Arab groups that turn out to be fronts for terrorism (such as the ISM or CAIR), the reporting of "anti-Arab discrimination" that turns out to be at the least exaggerted, if not actually cases of militant Arabs trying to force their culture on an unwilling majority. Even if these things are ever mentioned, they are forgotten the next time another incident comes around and the rush to placate kicks in.
