You know, that really is a good point, and illustrates why our government should deal with other governments fundamentally on the basis of individual rights. Disney has a valid complaint against a trademark infringement, but they would need the PA to recognize and uphold their trademark, which they would never do. Yup. Used to live in the dessert. I guess the only thing I have to say is "at least it is a dry heat." We don't have long summers up here, but it does get hot - lots of days in the high 90s. Thing is though, we also get 90 and even 100% humidity. (Maybe our resident weather guy can explain how you can have 100% humidity without being under water!) Abominable! Too muggy to move, to wear clothes, to think ...

True, blue, but just one incident of allowing Hamas to use their trademarked Mouse without licensing it to them pretty much invalidates their claim to it. Which would also have huge repercussions on the toys, books, movies, mouse hats and all the other Mouse stuff they sell. And repercussions on all of their other trademarks.

Its not clear to me that Disney could effectively mount litigation in Gaza.

Seriously, what "Palestinian court" is going to make a ruling against Disney here? Even if that unlikely event actually happened, where is the enforcement going to come from? Can you imagine Hamas "police" confiscating the Mickey-Rat video and costume?

Disney could likely get some other court (ie a US Federal court) to make a ruling here, but translating that into action on the ground in the no-longer-occupied territories isn't guaranteed.

The LEAST Disney can do here is make some kind of public statement saying they don't approve, and they are asking the Palestinians to cease-and-desist.

So why isn't Disney? I can think of several reasons.

1. It is are afraid of Palestinian terrorism.
2. It doesn't want to damage its Middle Eastern market (ie Cartoon riots, part II).
3. Disney has asked the Palestinians to cease and desist already, but doesn't want to draw even more attention to the racist use of its rat by making public comment.
4. Disney has actually licensed the rat to the Palestinians, but don't want this fact to get out because its too embarassing.
5. Disney hopes it will all blow over in a few days if ignored.
6. All of the above.

"I URGED that Hamas suspend the programme and they have withdrawn it, because it was wrong to use a programme directed at children to convey political messages," said Barghouthi, a political independent in the Hamas-led Palestinian government.

Co-opting him as a spokesman for Islamist Supremacism and Jew-Hatred means that the Palestinian children who are first exposed to Mickey that way (call him "Farfur" or whatever) will forever associate him with those racist beliefs for the rest of their lives, wherever they happen to live.

    Question to the room in general: why don't we "Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty" their collective asses?

    You know, put our own television station up somewhere close with a frickin' HUGE power source so it can crank out the megawatts (or maybe a conveniently placed satellite overhead) ... maybe even step on their frequencies a bit, and put LOTS of kids-oriented programs, etc., into the airwaves.

    Get the little rugrats hooked on Barney, make them all do-bees, maybe get them dancing to Schoolhouse Rock, etc., and I'm betting we see a change in attitude in the years to follow.

    Seems like such a good idea, I don't know why it isn't being done now, or if it is.  But it's gotta be better than how things stand.  Right now Genocidal Mouse is the only thing on, so that's what the kiddies will learn.  Give them some rational choices, tout the advantages of Democracy, etc., and we might be setting things up for improvement.

In response, the only surviving daughter of Walt Disney, original creator of the beloved Mickey Mouse character, says in the New York Daily News that she is disgusted by Hamas' tactics to use characters that children around the world adore to preach hatred and indoctrinate innocent children into a culture of violence.

Diane Disney Miller said she's disgusted that a ripoff of her father's star cartoon character is being used on a new Hamas TV show to encourage Palestinian children to take up arms against Israel and America.

She was more horrified the terror group was using the knockoff Mickey to preach Islamic radicalism to kids throughout the Gaza Strip.

"It's not just Mickey, it's indoctrinating children like this, teaching them to be evil," said Miller, a Northern California winery owner. "The world loves children and this is just going against the grain of humanity."

"What we're dealing with here is pure evil and you can't ignore that," Miller said.

Testifying under oath recently, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice misled Congress in her strong defense of Al-Hurra, the taxpayer financed Arab TV network. It was unwitting, though. She herself was misled.

During the March 21 House Foreign Operations Appropriations subcommittee hearing, Rep. Mark Kirk (R., Ill.) pressed Ms. Rice on the wisdom of providing a platform to Islamic terrorists, citing Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah's Dec. 7 speech, which Al-Hurra aired live. The broadcast speech "went on for 30 minutes," she responded, "followed by commentary, much of which was critical of Nasrallah."

In fact, Mr. Nasrallah's speech was carried in its entirety, roughly an hour and eight minutes. The commentary that followed--a 13-minute phone interview with Wael Abou Faour, a member of Lebanon's governing coalition--was indeed critical of Mr. Nasrallah. He accused the Hezbollah leader of not being anti-U.S. and anti-Israel enough. While Mr. Nasrallah had claimed Lebanon's governing coalition was aligned with the U.S. and had backed Israel during the war last summer, Mr. Abou Faour said that Hezbollah was actually closer to the U.S and added that any Lebanese faction that assisted "the Israeli enemy" should not be allowed to engage in political discussion because "the only place they should be [is] in prison."

With an annual budget now over $70 million, Al-Hurra has for three years served as the centerpiece of America's aggressive post-9/11 courtship of the Arab world.

If by "we" you mean the USA, there is only so much we can do. With all the problems in Iran, Darfur, etc, disrupting internal Palestinian propaganda isn't a big priority of our gov't. We can't micromanage everything, everywhere, all the time.

If by "we" you mean Israel much of "Palestine" already receives Israeli TV.

If Israel started broadcasting children's programming in Arabic, the Hamasniks would simply ban it.

A better, question, I think, is why doesn't Israel destroy Hamas' TV station?

I've seen enough.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. These people are mad bastards who use children to further their ends, whether it be this Mickey Mouse monstrocity or as bombs, yet no one (except the good people here) will talk about it. My God, what has to be done?

It seems to me the Disney company could do us all a favor by suing these folks for copyright infringement and theft -- in any and every available venue -- for at least $26 trillion.
