Obama: Small-Town People Cling to Religion, Guns, and Xenophobia

Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 2:36:43 pm PDT

Obama’s latest misstep is recounted by Politico’s Ben Smith: Obama on small-town PA: Clinging to religion, guns, xenophobia.

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them...And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Wow, is he feeling the strain or is he really that tone-deaf to how incredibly arrogant this sounds to average Americans?

AP has more; the McCain camp has issued a statement.

"The presence of Italian Muslims in institutions also serve make it normal for Muslim citizens to participate in the political life of the country."

However Chaouki also knows there its a long road to achieving this goal.

He could not hide his envy for the situation of second generation immigrants in neighbouring countries such as France where they have managed to occupy important positions in various departments such as the department of Justice.

"I want to know long it's going to take for the Italian society to evolve before it's possible for an Obama, the son of an immigrant, can dream to lead the country," he said.

Guns and religion...so Obama is dismissive of the First and Second Amendments. Glad we got that cleared up.

11 rawmuse  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 2:41:23pm

Let's see, on the one hand we have religion, guns, and xenophobia, and on the other hand we have an authoritarian, socialist government run by a Black Nationalist. Is this a hard choice? Is it even close?

He's tone deaf having hung out on an isolated island of liberalism his entire life. It's the same thing with the national anthem -- he doesn't get it, and doesn't understand how that will in the end make him totally un-electable in the General election.

It does kind of show his hostility towards religion.

Kind of like a whitewashed tomb.

He's John Kerry part II - another self absorbed elitist liberal who thinks the worse of everyone around him that isn't a self absorbed elitist liberal and instead of questioning himself and his message blames class/race/religion.

As a note, I don’t own a gun (will eventually) but I cling to the second amendment because any government that decides one amendment in the bill of rights is negotiable and ignorable then none of the bill of rights is safe from the government. Is that the democrat way of SUPPORTING religion and guns? Am I just not nuanced enough?

Seems to me that if you are going to insult people by talking about how they love guns and religion, then you apparently don't have much of a care for either.

The Klan and the Panthers are just frustrated? OK, what's the solution? More big government? More federal school programs telling our children what to think and not how to think?

Let's parse this, shall we:

it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns

OK, so I am out of a job and all I have is my gun and I am frustrated. This means that all "downsized" people are on the verge of going postal. If we give them a job and money, they'll give up their guns. (and then the rest of their freedom)

or religion

We want to swap out their belief in God to the belief in the State. And who said Marxism was dead?

or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations

If by that, they don't like people like you BO who don't work for a living and want to enact legislation which undermines our ability to make a living, yer damn right we're frustrated.

definite elitist thinking from someone who has never really had to defend his point of view. While I think Obama's candidacy has been good for America (he's not perfect but he's no grandstanding Jesse Jackson either), I've been waiting all year for his campaign to implode via his missteps. I thought it would be one huge gaffe but not I'm inclined to think it will be a slow disintegration. As much as I don't like McCain, he's being smart, letting the Dems have the spotlight for the most part ... the fight between Obama and Hillary will bring out the worst in both and give McCain ammunition for later. It also lets the Republican base get fired up over those two numbnuts enough to forgive McCain for his immigration fiasco (among others) and vote for him. Unfortunately, that is exactly what I will do, holding my nose of course.

So a person who is religious and exercises their Second Amendment Right is not a "typical American". Only small town hicks who have lost manufacturing jobs are religious and tote guns. "Normal" Americans, the kind we should all strive to be, need have nothing to do with religion or guns. In fact, if we only recovered some of the jobs lost overseas we could get rid of the plagues of religion and gun ownership.

I live in a blue collar town. I've lived in a blue collar town somewhere or other most of my life. Nobody I know has ever blamed immigration for their problems. Heck, most of them are children of immigrants or grandchildren of immigrants themselves. There is a big difference between an immigrant and an illegal "immigrant" who comes here and takes one of those "jobs Americans won't do" for less than minimum wage and no benefits.

*Has no real world experience at anything except rabble rousing during his entire lifetime
*May in fact be a dual citizen

AngyIgbo:

1. Conservatives have no ill will toward any LEGAL immigrant. Notice how Obama purposefully uses the term 'anti-immigrant'.

2. Conservatives like to keep their hard earned money. Michelle O. wants to make people 'give up their piece of the pie'. COMMUNIST TRIPE.

3. Conservatives realize that peace through strength is the only deterrent of EVIL. Yes, AngryIgbo, evil does exist. Obama is hostile to military and wants to do all he can to decimate it from within with policies that would destroy our necessary military might.

4. He wants to raise taxes. (that alone should be enough, but I will humor you) He wants UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE by forcing a higher tax and a forced redistribution of wealth. The man has never worked in the private sector and therefore has NO CLUE as to what makes America run and what makes it great.

If these points are deflected by your Elitist/Ignorant Shield of Protection from Common Sense +5, then I will not bother to continue...If they do penetrate and you actually analyze and think through these points, you might, just might make it.

Obama represents the interests that are against American principles and culture. The world is still pissed of at America even after 200 years. Obama represents all this pent up hostility to people who achieve as a result of free independent thought and action.

I cannot tell if you're praising me or insulting me (Yea if the former, boo if the latter, I guess). Goad doesn't have the best connotation.

Your second sentence, though, requires a huge amount of writing to support. I think everyone would be interested to know how a man with his past, his associations, his politics, etc., could possibly, even remotely, be good for America.

It is not possible to be both a "conservative" and also believe that a man with a voting record to the left of Dennis Kucinich and Barry Sanders could be good for this country. It literally is not possible to have both be true.

Typical racist claptrap from a lefty.

Just because Obama is black doesn't make him immune from criticism on the political front. Or is it just because he's black that he's immune to criticism or scrutiny in your mind? Those are not racist comments by the way. Most racists I know are liberals who constantly refer to color, sex, gender or whatever as more important than the individual mind. Conservatives concentrate on principled thought, of which Obama has none.

People are not really going to buy this "I'm a conservative" notion.

You guys are all really pissing me off with your stupid anti-Obama rhetoric.

I've been a member for a while, I think as most of you do on the issues that matter, but this anti-Obama crap has got to go. I dont know if it is just an act in some competition to see who can appear more conservative, or whether some of you are actually this retarded.

re: #74 AngryIgbo

Dont have one dumbo. I've been a member here for over a year. You can check my prior posts, I'm a conservative.

re: #82 AngryIgbo

Yes idiot, thats what Obama was implying. That EVERY SINGLE person in a small midwest town is unemployed and mad at immigrants.

Do you purposely attempt to misinterpret anything he says or are you this stupid?

re: #92 AngryIgbo

Not when I'm this angry.

I have been a member for far longer then three days, or I'll add, then you have been.

I'm glad however that you concede he was not attacking the Constitution.

re: #138 AngryIgbo

I'm busy. Its really that simple.

1. One year only 30 posts and you blowup today = sleeper.
2. Inexcusably rude in place of logically defending position.
3. Condescending to posters eerily similar to the condescending bigotry of Obama towards a group of stereotypical white referenced in article.
4. Claim of being "conservative" = telltale. This one always gives the trolls away.

By all means, keep flopping around in here while we feast on your gamey buttocks.

What's your exact evidence of the failures of Condeleeza? Do you have a list. What task has she specifically failed in? Name one. In your short sighted bias you believe that a lack of action on the part of those whom she has discussions with is a failure on her part. Yet you would probably never consider that she has integrity and values that those who listen to here stand against and will never act on. Exactly what proposals of the GOOD man do you find in keeping with your Conservative foundation? Would it be taxing everyone who works to give to everyone who doesn't? Would it be separating people by race and placing one above the other in opportunities? Would it be taking the European side on everything to the detriment of America exceptionalism? Would it be controlling every aspect of our lives? Or would it be pulling out troops out of the Middle East and claiming defeat?

Exactly what does Obama bring to your CONSERVATIVE table?

I was referring to Angry's original post, and not his flown-off-the-handle rage since that point. I don't want to see Obama in the White House any more than I assume you do. The only point I was conceding to 'angry' was that sometimes some of the rhetoric can be a little over the top. I've been reading LGF for roughly 3 years and was excited to finally get in. I think I've treated everyone respectfully here, probably agree with most of you on 98% of the issues, and I get called a 'T' within my first week, at least I believe that was your implication. good man != good president

Well, I don't necessarily buy into the Obama = good man bit. The evidence of that being what? Some charismatic speeches? His books are filled with anti-white bigotry. His church is imbued with the essence of anti-Americanism and anti-white bigotry. His wife, despite her lofty job and $320k+ salary, is a militant with a chip the size of Demos on her shoulder...

I don't assume that because someone seems nice that you can excuse their lifelong associations and closet friends and family. You truly do know a man by the company he keeps.

Just to answer Obama's original statements...

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them...

Funny, I live in a flyover state in a town less than 50k in population and very few small towns are truly stagnant. Many have sprung up nicely over those 25 years. Nice schools, lots of room, good neighbors, sophisticated in some respects and simple in others.

And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

What is a president supposed to do? You can "regenerate" every town. Like nature, some wither and some thrive. However, the policies I've heard you espouse are not what have been in place when small towns have thrived in the past. They do remind me a bit of Jimmah Carter's policies though, but more communist sounding. Nice.

And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion

What. The. Fuck.

This is the blindingly stupendously stupid comment that will haunt him forever, I hope. Mr. Obama, I'm not religious. My wife owns a few guns, I've shot them, we have a nice big pistol in our bedroom for home protection and a few in the gun safe at my inlaw's house. I think about guns maybe three minutes a year, but am quite sure I could pull a trigger if the circumstances warranted. Sounds to me that you are the bitter person.

or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations

Actually it pisses me off to hear people whine about things like this because it shows a weakness and inability to adapt to change. But by far I hear this crap more from my lefty friends than my righty friends. By far. By a mile. You see, the left has that whole "poor me" thing down pat.

I actually have recently spoken to a couple of guys from West Africa - one from Ivory Coast and one from Togo. They are ambitious, goal oriented, and fiscally conservative. They can't vote yet, but they are working on it. I can tell you this - they wouldn't vote for Senator O if they could vote in this election. And the guy from Ivory Coast loathes France and loves the USA.

African immagrants tend to be hard working and diciplined. What is going on in the USA has nothing to do with skin color, nothing to do with "race" (the chimera that that is).

We see people with a sense of entitlement. Michelle Obama, millionaire, exemplifies that. She whines that her children's dance instructor costs too much, when that dance instructor doesn't make a tenth as much as she does.

Probably a lot less than a tenth.

We see people with a sense of entitlement.

That is the worst problem in the Black Community. Dr. King had a dream of a nation that didn't judge his people by their skin color, but by the content of their character.

His successors want just the opposite. Because they fear the Dream.

They won't measure up.

You are just not being fair to Obama. And to say he is more left then Michael Moore is a fantasy. If America does not elect him, and instead chooses a man so old that when he was born the average American did not have telephones, it will spell the beginning of the end of the country.

What century did YOU come to America? The "average" American has had a telephone for a hundred years or so. Even in rural America. They were, after all, invented here. Electric lights too.

John McCain is not all that old. He comes from a long line of loyal Americans. Both his father and his grandfather were Admirals in the Navy. He has been serving this country loyally in uniform and out of it every day of his life since he was 18 years old or so. He has earned the right to be honored as President of the United States of America.

Neither Hillary Rodham Clinton nor Barrack Hussein Obama can claim anything remotely close to the same.

I have four daughters and two sisters. Never once in living memory have we all agreed on a presidential candidate. Except this time. Every single one of us, independently and for differing reasons, is adamant that we will all vote for John McCain and that the only circumstance under which any of us would consider voting for Hillary would be if the alternative is Obama.

Obama and Keith Ellison are kindred spirits. Lest we forget that this man was sworn into office on Thomas Jeffreson's Koran. Liberals and collectivists had an orgasm over that event. It was a stab at the principles of our founding fathers.

In 1786, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams went to negotiate with Tripoli's envoy to London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman or (Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja). Upon inquiring "concerning the ground of the pretensions to make war upon nations who had done them no injury", the ambassador replied:

It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy's ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once

It just seems to me that Obama is surrounded by a shell of Muslims and ex-muslims. Even his favorite preacher is an ex Muslim. The cult of anti-Americanism surround him and defends him.

Here is my post on the Sedition act.

Obama represents the interests that are against American principles and culture. The world is still pissed of at America even after 200 years. Obama represents all this pent up hostility to people who achieve as a result of free independent thought and action.

I personally feel that he would gladly travel back in time to murder Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Johan Adams, and Benjamin Franklin with a hunting knife and small pair of gloves he bought at a sporting goods store.

As the son of a Pennsylvanian, I lack the words or the will to fully address this kind of snobbery. I am so deathly sick of this shit attitude from the supposed "elites" towards people who don't shop at Whole Foods.

Pennsylvania is economically un-diverse: True.
Pennsylvanians often have guns: True.
Pennsylvanians are insular: True.
Pennsylvanians go to church: True.

But to disparage them for that, to paint them as a bunch of racist bigots like - if I may - some typical blue-state know-it-all, like your average 21st-century-digital-boy college-aged dipshit who thinks he's the alpha and the omega because he surfs Kos and hates religion....

That kind of thing is unbecoming for somebody running for President.

You go to these Ivy League colleges, like Columbia and Harvard, where diversity of thought has been gone now for 30 years, and they overflow with nothing but a leftist worldview. And it's not surprising that an alumnus, like Barack Obama, becomes an arrogant, condescending, leftist that clings to socialism, secularism, and the very totalitarian belief that he can, to paraphrase his wife, 'fix our broken souls.' It is also not surprising that he clings to antipathy for those who don't think like he does and narcissistically defines them as "divisive" as a way to explain his frustration.

Here's McCains response:

McCain's campaign also criticized the comment Friday, saying "It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking."

"It is hard to imagine someone running for president who is more out of touch with average Americans," Steve Schmidt, a senior advisor to McCain, said.

Here's Hillary's response:

"It's being reported that my opponent said that the people of Pennsylvania who face hard times are bitter," Clinton said during a campaign event in Philadelphia. "Well that's not my experience. As I travel around Pennsylvania. I meet people who are resilient, optimist positive who are rolling up their sleeves."

"Pennsylvanians don't need a president who looks down on them," she said. "They need a president who stands up for them, who fights hard for your future, your jobs, your families."

794 Arbalest  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 5:01:26pm

Reading carefully the original source at the Huff Po, I’m struck by the lack of intellectual effort on the part of Mayhill Fowler and of Barak Hussein Obama.

As per Fowler, neither BHO nor the writer have detailed knowledge about Pennsylvania, other than what they experience, i.e., this:
These Pennsylvanians are patriotic. On several occasions, they've awarded Barack Obama a standing ovation for his promise to restore the Constitution.
and:
At two town hall meetings in Pennsylvania, Senator Obama drew plenty of remarks about patriotism. . . . .

Then a couple of paragraphs describing Pennsylvanians:

Another thing about Quaker Staters. The ravages of mining and old-style manufacturing have been unable, after all, to break the bond Pennsylvanians have with the natural world.
. . .
. . .
These qualities of hospitality, patriotism and endurance are exactly what Californians need to hear about Pennsylvanians. And when he spoke to a group of his wealthier Golden State backers at a San Francisco fund-raiser last Sunday, Barack Obama took a shot at explaining the yawning cultural gap that separates a Turkeyfoot from a Marin County.

From the description, the Mayhill seems to consider Pennsylvanians nothing more than country bumpkins, hillbillies. Quite Progressive.

But let us remember that, while Turkeyfoot may be in Pennsylvania, Dogpatch (there really is one) is in Arkansas.

While Marin is noted partly for the wealth of its populace (we’ve seen the vehicles at an Al Gore meeting or two), it’s also the home of patriots like “Johnny Taliban” Lindh.

And every time a license plate is displayed on the Megan’s Law electronic displays along 101 or I-880, there’s always a feeling that the vehicle just might be from Marin County (or very near by).

But somehow, based on these reported experiences, Barak Hussein Obama talks about “bitterness” and “frustration”.

Yet the Pennsylvanians seem to express, as per Mayhill Fowler, such emotions only vis- a-vis Governor Ed Rendell. Why nothing else?

Why not express frustration at not being accepted to Harvard with “bolo” LSATs?

Or how about expressing frustration at how rich kids at Princeton act? (Do noveau-riche Pennsylvanians raise their daughters to dine only on haute-cuisine when in public?)

Or about wanting a house selling for $2.6 million and not having a friend who will eat $930,000 of it (AND then give the $930,000 parcel anyway, as a “housewarming” gift?

Or about having to explain 20+years of a friend-and-mentor’s publicly racist rants (who then retires to a new home in a 93% “the-different-ethnicity-that-was-the-object -of-the-rants” neighborhood), and then be expected to reject said friend, not excuse him?

Are any Pennsylvanians frustrated at having to answer questions about their work experience and qualifications for Federal offices?

Specifically, how many of them have run for higher office, not having completed a solid, undisturbed 30% of their first elected Federal office?

How many of them are bitter about having resumes that look like sheets of blank paper, and being questioned about it?

One has only to read Barak Hussein Obama’s “Dreams . . .”, look at his political record, and take notes to see his internal inconsistencies (and from an early age), un-ending ingratitude to his maternal family (who sheltered, fed, clothed and educated him), lack of experience, and general unsuitability for leadership.

This Huff Po piece is simply confirmation of the blinding and high-volume obvious.

795 alegrias  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 5:02:35pm

Snob-ama!

B. Hussein's own family "cling[s] to Nation of Islam, swords, infidel-hatred", but then they're typical Trinity United Taqiyya Church-going folks.

Who exactly was it that said "God DAMN Amerikkka" but Obama's small town reverend mentor?

796 jopa416  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 5:03:12pm

I think it is plainly obvious that Angryigo is a lower educated poster who does not understand the nuances of what Obama has said.

I mean, seriously, calling people retards in post #62 ?!?! What kind of 12 year old discourse is that? Sadly, this is typical of the political discourse of the average Obama supporter. I am sure that the people who support the special Olympics and the like are pretty impressed with comments like that from Obama supporters.

That is why Obama assumes that he can speak of small town USA in the manner that he does. He thinks that those people are as intellectually impotent as his followers.

Honestly, every night Obama must go to bed and laugh to himself that a race baiting, Muslim preacher following, class envy touting snob like himself can garner the support that he has.

798 Perivayne  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 5:04:25pm

Well, speaking as a small-town white person in Pennsylvania, I must admit Obama's done gone and shot himself in the foot with this one. Maybe he should hang around with those bitter folks and learn basic gun-safety?

One of the most offensive parts of his speech about the loss of industry and jobs is that the Commonwealth has lost the most during Democratic tenures in the state house and capitol building. At least he should note that and take credit for his party's work, right?

808 tazzerman  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 5:16:24pm

Nobody should be surprised by this. Obama is just echoing what the so called 'progressives' in this country believe. I find it interesting how Indiana is ALWAYS left out of these 'Midwest' discussions when this state as lost more jobs than any other except Mich.

The difference?

Indiana is a deep red state with a VERY ingrained sense of self-reliance. Instead of looking to the govt for some kind of hand out, the folks around here in the small towns and communities are working hard to retool, reinvent and bring in new businesses. Not some elitist, socialist, govt hack who will promise us everything and deliver nothing.

Socialist like Obama just do not get it. The people around here are Americans not Europeans and we're smart enough NOT to fall for his baloney. Quite frankly, I don't CARE that he supposedly cares.

Ok, my mem is slightly faulty. It wasn't a video, but a Reuters story, still on-line: Obama says he would withdraw from Iraq by end-2008
Excerpt:

"I am here to say that we have to begin to end this war now," the Illinois senator said in excerpts from a speech he was to deliver later in Iowa. The excerpts were released by his presidential campaign.

He said he would immediately begin to pull out troops engaged in combat operations at a pace of one or two brigades every month, to be completed by the end of 2008.

And here's where I posted, sep 13, 2007.

Wow, someone who cannot make their point with out name calling. One of the reasons that I am addicted to this place is that 99% of the time the discussion is civil (not counting Pope threads) and educational.

Personally, I'm about to ask if old "ANGRY" wants to take it outside. I bet I can take him. Heck, I bet the 6 year old grandson can take him.

Susan

Your kitty could take him.

Can I ask - is/was that AngryIgbo a moby or a troll? I'm still a bit confused over the difference, and I've read the dictionary. Since he/she has been here for a year now, wouldn't that make him/her a moby? But he/she has had only 20 posts until this thread, so maybe that makes him/her a troll?

I haven't had a problem with my stalkers in more than a year. At least that has been called to my attention.

The Left doesn't like me, and some of them tried to make my online life miserable.

They failed. At least so far :-)

It's a risk every LGFer has. The LGF Watch crowd are not nice people. The crowd they attract aren't nice people, either.

All they have to do is get a hate on you.

Best thing to do is block 'em and ignore 'em.

Meanwhile, President Bush is on the Catholic Channel EWTN here in DC around 8pm, discussing his defense of MINORITY RIGHTS of all people to worship, in the totalitarian, infidel-persecuting Middle East AND China, with Raymond Arroyo.

That's my President, promoting & protecting the rights of all minorities to worship AS THEY PLEASE (or not), no matter what elitist millionaire billionaire liberals think the rest of us should do!

Liberals like Obama think Small-Town people got no reason to live. Don't want no Small Town people 'round here, like the Randy Newman song about SHORT people.

Don't vote for this elitist Snob-ama who HATES everything good about America, including his grand mother who raised him when his marxist father abandoned him.

"The excerpts were released by his presidential campaign." --according to Reuters. To be fair, assuming Reuters didn't screw up the story, it's possible that BO never got around to delivering a speech consistent with the reported excerpts. But gee, one would think he'd read his own speeches before they're released.

re: #772 rjjago

Obama’s starting to remind me of Fred Thompson. Back when Thompson was running, no one knew why he wanted to be President. Looking at Obama’s latest, his pastor, and his wife’s statements, you have to wonder why he wants to be President of the United States.

* * *
There's an article in today's WashPost saying Zalmay Khalilzad, our Afghan-American public servant of President Bush, and former Ambassador to Iraq, may return to run for President of Afghanistan!

Perhaps Obama can similarly decide to be president of Kenya or some other country that he might love better than this America that he and his wife are so ashamed to be part of.

Adios, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye & Bon Voyage, Obama & Michelle

Moron, he did not attack religion, or the constitution. Do you know how to READ? Or are you imagining text and attributing it to Obama? He made a comment about how some people in these blue collar towns are blaming immigration for their problems, or cling to their guns & religion.

He was doing the same thing as me saying all Black people are crack addicted criminals. He is a racist America hating left wing elitist. By the way why is it you leftists are so brave behind a keyboard? Oh that is because you are cowards and depend on people with real courage to defend your right to be assholes while you trash them. Here's a good one. Obama spoke at my college in PA 2 weeks ago and I attended for the entertainment/antagonistic/operation chaos value. Anyway, to get a ticket I gave my email address. The Obama campaign just sent me an invitation to go door to door for votes this weekend. Here is my reply...lizards have anythig to add? (ducks head as suggestions come flying)

Sorry but I can not support obama. I don't think he has been honest about much of his past. From his hate-mongering pastor to his socialist wife, shady real estate deals (Rezco), black panther ties etc. etc. etc. The more I learn, the worse he looks. Although he is a formidable speaker with prepared material I find his message to be nothing bu empty rhetoric. Obama is at best an empty suit. At worst, a pure communist/socialist who hates the American way of life.

I don't know who is a bigger c*nt- Hillary or Michele and I don't want either Billy or Michele as first lady.

Anyway I do hope that us typical white people bury Snobama in November in a landslide of historical proportions. He can blame it on white racism or whatever else he wants. 857 BethesdaDog  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 9:41:10pm

First his arrogant elitist wife made those comments to the struggling working class women in a small town in Ohio about how difficult it was to pay off student loans for her Ivy League eduction, what with the music and dance lessons for her privileged kids.

Now, he puts his foot in it, showing what he really thinks about white people who have to struggle. He's the biggest bigot of all, attributing to all of them racist, xenophobic and reactionary character. Just because somebody likes to own a gun and shoot does not make them a racist neanderthal. I'm not into guns, but he's stereotyping about working class whites--and he's doing it in the most condescending way.

He truly is the biggest bigot and elitist of all. I pray (and I'm neither religious, nor into guns) that this man gets trounced in November. God forbid he should ever get elected.

He is truly, and absolutely, one of the most despicable persons I've seen in American political life---and I say that as a registered Democrat for the last 35 years (who will proudly vote for McCain come November).

858 TMF  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 9:52:55pm

860 soulpile  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 10:46:45pm

Obama's response to criticism on his statement:
He even takes his own comments out of context.
BHO doesn't even address the issue and just insists that people are "bitter." Nothing about the accusation that these "bitter" people are also gun-toting, religious fanatic xenophobes.

861 Sgt.Slappy  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 11:10:33pm

re: #611 Colonel Panik

Did someone say Tradition?

Our intrepid Tevya relates "Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof." The same could be said for us "small-town Americans", we cherish our traditions as set down by our Founding Fathers, our ancestors, and families. Perhaps this is why progressive elites such as B. Hussein Obama, or John F'n Kerry (the list could go on, and on, and on...) seem so shaky when it comes to relating to the standard issue American.

You don't have to look too hard (well, I don't, anyway) to see that B. Hussein Obama has deeply insulted those things we Americans hold so dear: our tradition of exercising our God-given rights as enumerated by our Founders. The right to bear arms, or worship (or not) as we please, to only name those directly mentioned. It's not hard to imagine B. Hussein Obama stands in opposition to other rights that Americans hold as inviolable, considering all that we are learning about his character; from his words, the words of his wife, and those he keeps company with.

He also questions the validity of a belief that the borders of our sovereign nation should be secure against assault by lawbreakers, suggesting it is a childish mistrust borne of bitterness over personal misfortune. He, of course, is wrong on all counts. Yet, I am sure, were you to suggest to him that he is out of touch with America, Americans, and those things that we consider inherently American... He would say that we common folk simply do not understand his refined and nuanced words, or perceive his vision of what America could be under his stewardship.

However, I think we see him for the charlatan he is.

Now, if I were a rich man, I wouldn't have to work tomorrow. Good night all (if anybody is still reading this thread way down here).

862 A.W.  Sat, Apr 12, 2008 1:12:35am

I have said this before, and i will say it again. This is the most hilarious flame out since howard dean in 2004. And the really great part is with Dean, the democratic party figured out this guy was a loser and gave him the boot. Not that their second choice was much better, but still they were smart enough to get rid of that obvious whack-job. On the other hand, it seems to be too late to stop Obama, and his hard core is so cult-like I'm not sure it is going to sink in how terrible a candidate.

But on the other hand, McCain is not likely to be willing to really hammer Obama with it. So guys, we have to donate to 527's that will.

The dems think they can hit mccain the same way, but the truth is there isn't much to say bad about mccain. "He's um, old." okay. But obama is like a bad 1960's flashback and mccain wants to, you know, win in the war against islamofascism. So which is worse?

The problem dems have had for a while is that they have trouble believing their opponents merely disagree with them. There is no honest disagreement to them, because gosh they are so clearly right and superior. so every republican is evil, who cheats to win, and their followers are knuckle dragging klansmen.

865 OldMD  Sat, Apr 12, 2008 2:45:01am

The funny thing is what keeps guides the shop rats of old it is not bitterness but really hard core faith in the country.

You see them in clinic and ask, what do you do or a living?
"I'm a machinist, a lathe operator" (or some such).
And you say, where are you working?
"At the slaughterhouse, as a cow flipper, just now."
So, when was the last time you worked in the shop?
"Been laid off about 20 years now."

And the shops and factories have long gone to rust, but these folk are still hanging on like grim death to the hope of real jobs back, and the promise of the future.

The church or the bar, one way or the other is the social center were they renew their strength.

And the guns, since venison makes a good diet for strong children, even when the groceries are Forty dollars a bag.

Funny thing is, they're not all white, and come from an assortment of backgrounds, but culturally they are all shop rats, and proud of it.

And they are not stupid, seeing the jobs go overseas for free trade, and the illegal immigrants drive down wages and destroy their communities.

But they fly flags and vote, and still hold with the old traditions of the republic, which fortunately does not include fools like this Obama, who they name after a cartoon character "bam-bam."

866 IPLaw  Sat, Apr 12, 2008 5:39:46am

"And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or black nationalism, white-hate, and antisemitism antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Not to be harsh, but, since he likes to play the game of generalizations, what would BHO say about this statement? Would it be "racist" to ask? Being a black nationalist, shouldn't he understand and be able to explain to TWP?

867 Mcgyver  Sat, Apr 12, 2008 8:54:52am

868 BackwardsBoy  Sat, Apr 12, 2008 9:12:17am

"Shop rat?" That's a great metaphor, and I say that as a former one myself. After observing that the manufacturing sector was the place for folks smart enough for college but who enjoyed working with their hands (back in the '70's), I looked forward to a secure future making good money in a machine shop. What I learned there was like a large physics lesson on things like metallurgy, the effects of heat, and mathematics with real world applications. The benefits to the country of manufacturing were manifold and ubiquitous, but we didn't begin to know just how much until it disappeared. Someone somewhere decided that we didn't need to make anything, that we could let someone else do it cheaper with a resulting decline in quality. I guess that's somebody's idea of progress, but it's certainly not mine.
At least I can write, so maybe all is not lost. I could always start a blog...

869 Salman  Sat, Apr 12, 2008 9:53:01am
