The ISM Whitewash Continues

Sat, Apr 12, 2003 at 9:32:26 am PDT

Lewis W. Diuguid of the Kansas City Star is the latest reporter to apply a coat of whitewash to the story of Rachel Corrie and the International Solidarity Movement: Workers for peace collide with violence. In this disgracefully biased and incomplete article, you will find no mention of Rachel Corrie’s anti-American activities, no mention that the ISM is funded by Palestinian groups, no mention that Corrie was killed while trying to “protect” a house used for drugs and weapons smuggling, no mention that the ISM is a self-professed group of anarchists who have hidden terrorists and weapons in their offices, and certainly no mention of this:

Via Tal G., here’s a good summary of the facts in the Corrie case, and the many conflicting stories and dishonest statements made by the ISM: What Really Happened to Rachel Corrie.

(sigh) It never ends.

Meanwhile, ISM conducted another successful martyrdom operation in Gaza:

Friday's incident began when about a dozen members of the International Solidarity Movement, including foreigners and Palestinians, walked toward Israeli tanks on the outskirts of the Rafah refugee camp, near the border with Egypt, said Khalil Hamra, a photographer on assignment for The Associated Press.

The tanks patrol a road used by the army for incursions into the camp. The activists wanted to set up a protest tent on the road, in an attempt to block incursions, said Hamra and Khalil Abdullah, a Palestinian who works with the group but who is not a member.

Along the way, the protesters were joined by several children, the witnesses said. When the group was about 200 yards away from three tanks, soldiers opened fire from a tank-mounted machine gun, the witnesses said.

Hurndall and another foreign activist tried to get two children out of the line of fire, Hamra and Abdullah said. "Thomas grabbed one of their hands and as soon as he did that a tank fired at him, hitting him in the head," Hamra said.

From Haaretz:

I don't know about you, but I *always* remember to bring the little kids along when I'm marching towards an Israeli tank.

This article is nothing more than insidious propaganda that is being passed off as an opinion piece from a member of the Kansas City Star's editorial board. It is based on a telephone conversation and an e-mail with Joe Carr, a fellow student with the late Rachel Corrie at Evergreen State College and a fellow member of the ISM, and an interview with Carr's mother. Why let the facts get in the way of a story? Line the trash can with this one.

Hell, this isn't fit for my puppy to poo on, #3.

The media bias towards the Palestinians is absolutely abysmal. What could possibly motivate the major media outlets to be so outright innacurate??

On the International Solidarity Movement's association with terrorists, a guy named Garrick sends Love and Rage from Occupied Palestine (non-violent Rage, of course!):

Yesterday we met with a representative of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) here in Gaza. The PFLP is the second biggest faction within the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), is a Marxist Leninist party (to some degree though its policies have shifted in unclear ways over the years) and along with Fatah and Hamas is one of the three major players in Palestinian politics. I'm by no means a Marxist but as far as the big factions go its probably the one I find myself most closely aligned with on a personal level. Just to be clear, I try not to let my own personal politics get in the way of my solidarity work and I try never to tell Palestinians the correct way to resist or try to shape a society.

[PFLP comrade sez]: "Suicide bombings are the right of Palestinians to defend themselves. The real terrorism is the occupation. When occupation ends all suicide bombings will end."

Besides suicide bombing, Garrick also gets all excited about the symbolism of the Palestinian flag:

The red symbolizes the revolutionary nature of the struggle, the green stripe represents the peaceful time before occupation, the white stripe represents the desire for peace and the black stripe above the rest represents the darkness that has covered all of Palestine since the Israelis came. Powerful stuff. I had never heard the symbolism before.

I subscribe to the KC Star. Diuguid is well known as someone who finds racism and oppression in everything. To Diuguid, the coffee I am drinking right now is a racist cup because it has no cream. If I were to acquiesce and add some cream, he would write a lamentation to the undiluted coffee that was.

The best thing I do with Diuguid's articles is line my birds' cages.

ISM was following standard freedom fighter protocol of taking kids to the battlefield. When a palestinian is out to wage war, he always brings his kids and makes sure they stand in front of him. This was probably the case with ISM, and the IDF mistakenly thought they were out to wage war. (though the ISM is not a 'peace' front, so they probably were out to wage war and offer more martyrs)

8 Glen Wishard  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 8:56:59am

Another peace-loving ISM member, Matt Horton, laments the fate of martyrs and their families:

The israeli army and goverment have been changing their focus to the destruction of martyrs (suicide bombers) homes. This is an extreme form of collective punishment that is illegal by international law ... these operations are very clandestine and the families never know that they will happen. duh. if your mother know you were going to blow yourself up, do you think she would let you? yet the entire family and many other families are punished for the actions of one person. They must first face the tragedy of loosing loved one and then must face the tragedy of loosing their home and having the other men arrested.

This is also the same mentality that leads the army to destroy a whole city of detain all of the people or place people under curfew for days because they are "looking for terrorists" (whatever that means)

Note how mentions the destruction of a whole city (what city would that be?) in one breath, and curfews in the next, as if this were all equivalent.

... At night we stayed in Balata refugee camp in the house of the titti family. Two sons of the family were martyrs. The first was killed in a gun battle and the second blew himself up in israel.

... We came to al-fara'a camp to stay in the the home of one of the recent shaheed (martyrs/suicide bombers) whose house is under threat of demolition.

... So that's the situation as of now. I hope that this letter reaches all of you in the best of health and spirits. Freedom for palestine. death to injustice and downpression.

9 Glen Wishard  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 9:17:46am

Israelis in the ISM.

The Israeli who wrote this seems to think suicide bombings are no real threat to Israel ("... they have hardly prevented us all from going to work, living our lives and having fun") so he apparently has no qualms about lending aid and comfort to those who carry them out. He also displays typical leftist contempt for the soliders of the IDF ("young, stupid and aggressive and definitely not articulate").

These comments at the end about the ISM are interesting, though:

I feel that most of the activists in the ISM don't really know much about the history and roots of the conflict, and that means they, in my opinion, lack a main component in the proper analysis required to do constructive activism on Palestine ... there is hardly any attempts to even talk to Israelis and understand their reality (not agree, just understand) and culture.

The other issue I have with the ISM is that sometimes they are so self obsessed they forget that they are not the real story, and that affects the work sometimes ... very little of the activists speak Arabic or Hebrew, and as the internet and TV are not widely available, and they don't understand either Israeli or Palestinian broadcasts, they rely mostly on each other for news, which means that the smallest incident which happened to an international becomes central.

10 rabidfox  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 11:20:00am

There is no way that these folks can come up with a real heroine therefore they have to create one from the ground up. The nilhilists are busy trying to restore rhe respectibility of pedophelia to acceptability, and HItler (after all Bush = Hitler also implies that Hitler wasn't so bad) wasn't so bad eaither, etc. Why not rewrite this little part of history also?

After reading that I just knew he was a Brit. And sure enough:

...I do want to help out as much as I can, using the fact that I carry a British passport...

A friend in Israel (currently training to be a medic in the IDF) told me a while back that the most vocal and boisterous "peace" activists among the Israelis are Brits who come to the country in their middle age, usually do not serve in the army and upon their arrival immediately commence telling everyone else what to do. He told me a story of a Brit who, being too old to be drafted, volunteered in the IDF just so he could refuse to serve in the territories.

Rachel must be related to Whily coyote, every time you think she's been finished off she pops up and gets run over again.

This is sickening, but dare I say we all should have seen it coming.

I especial love the cover picture of the lazy eyed idiot.

What a waste (of newsprint and email time). Who gives a damn about the stupid bitch? She was of the same caliber as the attorney who got run over by the train at the Concord Navel Weapons Station...unfortunately he lived to remain in the gene pool....

16 Wow!  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 6:45:13pm

Folks on this site are dangerously ignorant. Looks like a bunch of cousin fuckin' Billie-Joe-Jim-Bobs. You guys would have made fine Nazis. Oops, did I say would have? Enjoy your empire (heil) while you can. A tractor death would probably be preferable to what you alter-boy molesters are likely to face when the empire crumbles.

17 Amos  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 7:20:02pm

Wow!

The first troll in the new place! Thanks for the caring attention, and the donation of your time. BTW, why don't you join the PFLP in Gaza? Oops, I meant the ISM. I hear there are new openings now...

From Rachel Corrie's site: "photos and more coming soon". Well, we have one photo of her for you right here... See, she's even working with kids. Lovely person.

Yup. We eat Possum, the other white meat.

Like my sister said after she lost her virginity, roll over
Paw, your crushing my pack of Marlboros.

Still gota admit, as dumb as we are, we are a hell of a lot smarter than an ISM human shield.

By the way you got a pretty mouth, get on your knees and squeal like a pig!

19 Frank IMC  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 7:40:13pm

you got a pretty mouth

Actually, it's "That one got a purty mouth, he do."

#17 - Yep, it's too late for him to join the PLF, now that their camp has been closed down.

20 Not Necessarily a Troll  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 7:42:42pm

You rich conservatives don't have a clue about what the poor have to suffer through. Now get back to your trailer park, cuz K-Mart's having a blue-light sale!

21 Frank IMC  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 7:45:11pm

#14 -She was only 23, and already she had wrinkles? Seems like a case of melanin-envy to me.

22 sidmystic  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 9:58:42pm

You're right, Troll. We rich conservaties should just quit our jobs and inherit our wealth like all "you rich liberals".

Was that an generalization adequate enough?

23 zulubaby  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 10:15:48pm

No sooner is LGF back up and the trolls are in. I missed LGF while Charles was moving to a new host, but it was a nice break from the trolls. Oh well.

ISM should get the message and pack their crap up and leave. They aren't the first or only group of activists in the territories yet somehow three of these tools have managed to get themselves hurt or killed. Very strange, no? I said it when the last fool caught a bullet--I suspect that ISM are setting the IDF up.

24 zulubaby  Sat, Apr 12, 2003 10:20:50pm

Rachel Corrie's site is powered by Solidarity Design

From the "about us" page:

SOLIDARITY DESIGN is a web design and services company created with the specific objective of enabling Palestinian organizations develop a web presence and get their message across to the rest of the world. If the realities of the Palestinian situation were more known, surely there would be more international support for the Palestinian rights. The advent of the Internet has presented an unsurpassed vehicle for achieving this; Palestinians should make the maximum use of it to get the real truth known and counter the pro-Israel media machine
SOLIDARITY DESIGN is a small group of professionals working for the Palestinian cause by helping Palestinian organizations become effective members of the Internet community. For organizations that contribute to the Palestinian cause*, we render our services at no profit, effectively working "at cost". SOLIDARITY DESIGN offers the full range of Web services, including consulting, domain registration, web hosting, web design, and website promotion.

Got it all locked in, don't they. Her parents must be so proud of their "martyred" daughter.

#20

I work an average of 40-45 hours a week for a living, dealing with rude little scabs like you who wonder why they internet can't work and are too damned self-absorbed to be bothered to understand why the magic box doesn't work and more, and throwing tantrums when things don't work NOW!

I hate your kind, who have enough money to sit around all day and complain about how rough things are when you don't have a clue. OR when you see poverty and greif for the first time, it comes on as a revelation to you all and suddenly you know Truth. Do something useful, like help get aid to these people. Or better yet, take a long hard look at them and see what they actually are doing before you condemn everyone else.

Sorry. Didn't mean to be that venomous. Been a bad week.

26 Yehudit  Sun, Apr 13, 2003 1:21:47am

#14 - I went to the page of news links. Interesting that this well-researched but not particularly flattering story was not linked.

27 Frank IMC  Sun, Apr 13, 2003 3:58:16am

I think some of you missed #20's irony. He was pointing out how liberals attack us for being both "rich" and "lumpenproletariat" at the same time.

28 Glen Wishard  Sun, Apr 13, 2003 6:32:47am

The ISM website is now headlined with their growing list of dead members: "While the world focuses intently on the unfolding events in Iraq, international ISM activists are under attack. Wake Up Israelis!"

Of course, Rachel Corrie is shown standing, in plain view, beside the bulldozer that didn't run over her.

In their plea to Israelis, they seem to be taking the claims up a notch - claiming that the deaths of ISM members are being ordered by the IDF:

It was proven beyond any doubt that she [Corrie] was seen and recognized as an International peace activist, yet the driver blindly followed the orders.

He [Avery] was guilty of attempting to protect Palestinian children. The solider blindly followed the orders and fired a round of high speed bullets directly to his head.

He was guilty of attempting to move two little girls from the army line of fire. The solider blindly followed the orders and Brian [they mean Tom Hurndall, not Brian Avery] is clinically dead.

The claim that the IDF was "blindly following" orders is a direct allusion to Nazis, of course:

Each and every one of you is still holding the pain deep inside him because the world was silent when you were persecuted, when you felt defenseless ... Why are you deadly silent? Does it really matter on which side of the bullet you stand? The sending or the receiving side!!!!

Nobody can say that the deaths of these people was a waste. The "Palestinian-led" ISM intends to get lots and lots of use out of them.

29 say it like it is  Sun, Apr 13, 2003 9:30:22am

Fuck that bitch. I'm glad she's dead. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Next!

30 benrand  Sun, Apr 13, 2003 10:36:44am

The dozer in the pics is the same dozer. The lamps are mounted on the lifting arms. If the clade goes above the cabin and the lights are affized to the cabin, the operator can't see.

It's the same bulldozer.

31 Abu Hamza  Mon, Apr 14, 2003 6:07:04am

Yuvalien (#6) is right. I'm in KC and I can confirm that Diuguid's columns set the standard for idiocy. Every colum he has ever written is exactly like the one before it. A boring nasally whining tone. Racism discovered everywhere he looks because he is looking so hard for it. Republicans evil each and every time you can just bank on that. He is definately the worst writer and the stupidest thinker you can possibly read. That he gets the facts of the bulldozed harpy story so fundamentally is no surprise at all to readers of the Star. I don't think Lewis is smart enough to actually manipulate this story to advance the pernicious goals of ISM or the Palestinian terror organizations. No, I think what is more likely to have happened is his puny intellect was overwhelmed by the propaganda of the ISM, and he simply regurgitated everything that Rachel's buddy told him.
