The Rachel Corrie Memorial Massacre

Wed, Oct 15, 2003 at 7:54:31 pm PDT

At OpinionJournal’s Best of the Web, James Taranto finds the connections that link today’s Palestinian attack on a US diplomatic convoy, the terror-enabling tools of the International Solidarity Movement, and the smuggling tunnels that carry the explosives into Israel from Egypt: The Rachel Corrie Memorial Massacre.

Remember Rachel Corrie? She was a mixed-up 23-year-old lass from Olympia, Wash., whose hobbies included playing in traffic and burning the American flag. Last March the former pastime cost her her life. She stood in front of an Israeli bulldozer, but was in the driver’s blind spot and was accidentally crushed to death.

Corrie’s fatal game of chicken was the product of malice as well as idiocy. Her goal was to promote Palestinian terrorists’ murderous campaign against Jews by obstructing Israeli efforts to destroy tunnels that are used to smuggle weapons and explosives from Egypt into the Palestinian “refugee camp” in Rafah, on the Gaza Strip.

Today Palestinian terrorists murdered at least three Americans on the Gaza Strip, reports the Jerusalem Post:

A massive explosion demolished a US armored jeep carrying US diplomatic and CIA officials Wednesday, killing at least three Americans and critically wounding one.

Minutes after 10 am, a large road side bomb went off under a convoy of 3 US diplomatic vehicles, backed by a Palestinian police escort, driving pass [sic] a gas station on the outskirts of the town of Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip.

Israeli security sources confirmed the explosion killed at least three Americans, identifying them as US citizens acting as security guards in the targeted vehicle.

And where did the bombs come from? Here’s a report from the Israeli group IMRA:

Brig. Gen (res.) Zvi Poleg told Israel Radio in an interview after the attack that the explosives could have been smuggled from Egypt through the smuggling tunnels. Poleg charged that Egypt was violated its treaty obligations in allowing the smuggling of weapons, explosives and ammunition from Egypt to the Palestinians via smuggling tunnels. He noted that members of the Egyptian Army have been involved in the smuggling and that the Egyptians are well aware of the operations but have not acted to stop the operations. He noted that over 60 smuggling tunnels were located and destroyed by Israel in the last year.

The Egyptians, who receive billions in American foreign aid as a reward for making “peace” with Israel a quarter century ago, have a lot of explaining to do. And it appears terror advocates like Rachel Corrie now have American as well as Israeli blood on their hands.

I hope Corrie’s parents are very proud of their daughter’s evil legacy.

I wonder what her parents are saying now?

Oh, who am I kidding, they'll blame the evil Zionazi Joooos as always.

Seriously though, can anything be done about cutting off this kind of political support for terrorist sympathisers in the US?

I mean, I thought we were at war with terrorists, it made all the major newspapers...

Now THAT is the true legacy Rachel Corrie. Her Arafat-loving parents should be proud.

I think that Birthright Israel needs to have a contract cluase when they bring students/applicants over. Any applicant who engages in activities with or supports ISM, the PA, or against Israel, will be immeadiately seized, deported, and fined the amount necessary to pay for the trip.

She stood in front of an Israeli bulldozer, but was in the driver's blind spot and was accidentally crushed to death.

As much as I love Taranto, this sentence was pretty much a dodge. It strongly implies she was run over by the dozer, which none of the credible evidence supports. Dunno if he disagrees, if this was an oversight, or perhaps just doesn't feel like wading through all the email over the cause of her demise again. Still, just a minor quibble for such a great take on the bombing.

He was excellent in skewering the "human shields" pre-Operation Iraqi Freedom too, a topic he'll hopefully revisit soon. Specifically, where the hell are they? Remember how they "lived for protecting the innocent Iraqis from bombs"? Now innocent Iraqis are getting bombed with regularity, the shields aren't flying/driving in to position themselves outside of hotels and embassies to offer their support and protection. Not all about keeping Saddam in power and/or opposing the US? My ass.

why is Birthright Israel letting themselves get played like that? Doesn't make any sense, does it?

BI has sent literally thousands of young Jews to Israel. If 2-3 have joined ISM in all those years (and I haven't heard of more than one myself - Adam Shapiro was not a BI participant), that's a drop in the bucket. They certainly aren't "letting themselves be played."

Human sympathy doesn't extend to them.

You're right, Yehudit. I just wish that there was some kind of accountability built into it to make the ISM types think twice before biting the hand that fed them.

OK so for the next few days Israel will be understood, but suddenly a Muslim child will be killed in a very dramatic way with all the European media conveniently right there to take pictures and publicize the family's grief. Then it will all go back to being Israelis fault. Its great how the PA can control it journalistic stooges.

20 /d/  Wed, Oct 15, 2003 6:27:46pm

Now the PA is claiming that they really did try to warn the US of terrorist attacks just like this one. Yeh, sure guys. Whatever you say. Now fuck off.

Senior Palestinian Authority security officials claimed Wednesday that in the past months, they had repeatedly warned U.S. officials to change
travel routines in the Gaza Strip and West Bank,
in order to avoid attacks like one that killed
three American security men travelling in a convoy
in the north of the Gaza Strip Wednesday morning.

24 Rachel Killed Kennedy  Wed, Oct 15, 2003 6:35:21pm

5 or 6 badly scanned photos and a few e-mails notwithstanding, the entity that was formerly known as Rachel Corrie no longer exists.

She's not having a chili dog in that big 7/11 in the sky with Elvis, Kurt Cobain, Johnny Ace, and William Kunstler.

She just aint.

But seriously folks, violence against Americans in the Middle East has been going on for decades .

Rachel Corrie was 5 years old when Hezbollah killed 200 Marines in Lebanon.

She wasn't even born when the PLO killed the American ambassador.

She was probably in the 3rd and 4th grade when American after American got kidnapped in Lebanon in the mid and late 80s.

I think this latest upsurge is probably the beginning of the long speculated upon reaction of the "Arab Street" to the invasion of Iraq.

If Shapiro actually spoke the truth and lost his internal monlogue;

Palestinians need to show greater unity

because they turn on you faster than a whipped pit bull and are less trust worthy than a used car salesman with a coke habit.

great handicap to the Palestinian independence movement is the fact that the public seems to support Israel

They keep trying to spread the word about the GZC, and the whole "Kill the Jew (appeasers last of course)", but its just not resonating they way they thought it would.

They only seem to pay attention when there are Israeli victims, and they only seem to pay attention when something is affecting Israel

Arafat and the PA have been ruthlessly killing and intimidating their people for years, and the rest of the Arab world treats them like shit. C'mon, lets see some coverage there.

Israeli officials are able to control information being shared with American newspapers because Palestinians are slow to release descriptions of Israeli acts of aggression.

Yeah, the Israelis keep giving honest reports, while the PA has to consult to see what load of crap they think will sound the best politcally.

everyone involved is a leader

but if you don't deal with Arafish, and bow to his will, then p!$$ off.

And in response to this incident at his press conference.

The second round of applause came when a woman identified herself as a Holocaust survivor. The applause quickly died, however, when she explained Palestinians had little room for complaint considering Jews endured what she thought was worse treatment during World War II.

Shapiro responded: "Well duh, We are Jews after all."

Oh, F-cking please, tell me that asshole did not say that. Adam Shapiro is so full of shit he can make other people's eyes turn dark brown just by making eye-contact with them. Toilet paper wilts in his presense. This pretentious, arrogant, self-centered piece of shit only plays his Judaism card from the bottom of the deck, if not from up his sleeve or up his ass, and only when it's convenient for him to do so, such as in the instance above. The rest of the time, he claims not to be interested in being a Jew or being Jewish. Until it's convenient for him to be so, in which case he's suddenly Mr. Jewish Self-Righteous all of a sudden.

To wit:

Where Adam disagrees with his family, and the majority of world Jewry, is in his view of Judaism. "I don't identify as Jewish. I see it as a religion rather than an ethnicity and, as I have no religious feelings, I don't regard myself as Jewish. I know many other people have a different understanding. I am the only one in my family who sees it that way."

OT: Report critical of mine clearing

Over the past 10 years, Denmark has invested substantial sums of money in mine-clearing operations in war-torn countries around the world. But according to a new report by consulting firm Cowi, commissioned by Danish development agency Danida, Denmark's mine-clearing operations have been too little concerned with human rights and poverty-fighting efforts.

The report confirmed that, with more than 67 million euros committed to demining operations over the past decade, Denmark ranks among the world's leading mine-clearing countries. But Denmark has done too little to integrate mine-clearing efforts into larger development aid initiatives.
"Viewed overall, the Danish-subsidised programs are far too focused on the immediately measurable results--for example, how many square meters of soil have been cleared of mines--with too little regard for long-term effects on the society as a whole. For example, there have been no sociological or economic analyses as to how mine-clearing can help to combat poverty, which is Danida's central objective," read a summary of the report.
Danish Demining Group director Bo Bischoff told Ritzau that there was always room for improvement, but criticised the Danida/Cowi report for "intellectualising" mine-clearing efforts. Bischoff also said the report's criticism did not hold true for efforts that his organisation carried out in Afghanistan and other global hotspots

I'll be amenable to building a mosque on Ground Zero when they build a memorial to Richard the Lion Hearted and the rest of the Crusaders in Mecca.

Well, to be fair, the mosque would be part of an interdenominational church-synagogue-etc. complex.

But a bad idea, nonetheless.

I am just blown away by this

far too focused on the immediately measurable results--for example, how many square meters of soil have been cleared of mines--with too little regard for long-term effects on the society as a whole

I guess the consulting firm may be thinking the money should not go to actually clearing mines but to consultants to discuss the effects of clearing mines - must be affiliated with the UN.

I am not sure how deep you could get into sociological or economic analyses of mine clearing. Are there arguments for leaving some mines behind to protect "green spaces" and provide jobs for doctors?

Peres chides Barak for saying Israel "has no partner"

"Former Labor prime minister Ehud Barak made a serious mistake when he said 'we have no partner' and attacked the Israeli participants in the private peace plan, known as the 'Geneva Initiative,'" said Labor Party leader Shimon Peres in an interview with Israel Radio Wednesday.

Shimon Peres is a terrorist supporter and a betrayer of his people. Adam Shapiro's hero, no doubt. What a disgrace!

OT, but also a memorial. The most bizarre memorial imaginable

BIZARRE I think that rabbi was eating some questionable mushrooms. A reflecting pool would be nice but a mosque at a site where 3000 died while the murderers cried allah akbar while commiting their fould deed is sooooooooooo wrong that it would never float. now a church no way the LLL would throw a fit. and a synagauge well i doubt it jeeeeze where do these people come up with these ideas

but otoh maybe a sculpture with icons of christian, muslim, jewish, hindu, buhdist, might be nice (now as a sculpture i'm talking like that ten commandment statue that was in georgia size

More idotarianism in DK

Danish humanitarian groups have turned down an offer of a free plane to southern Iraq, in order to mull over new projects and military protection in conjunction with their work in the country, on the grounds that it might be misconstrued as support for the allied occupation of Iraq.

Too bad these nuts are more interested in political statements than actually helping people.

BTW, something that gets just about about zero news and needs more attn:

Denmark was one of the few European countries to support the US-led war in Iraq, a move which deeply split Parliament and the populace.

No. Mossad tricked the shahids into flying the planes into the WTC so Dubya would declare war on Islam and help the Joooos expand the Zionist Entity so that it extends from the Nile to the Euphrates! It shows without a doubt the stupidity and ignorance of the audience that buys this biggoted, hateful horse shit. You may think Rachel was misguided ( many others don't ) but did she deserve to die for standing up for her beliefs and her attempt to bring attention to the plight of the Palestinians ? And how callous some of you are to her parents; pray to God that the shoe doesn't one day end up on the other foot. The fact is she had every right to travel to Palestine and engage in the activities she did - including burning a ( badly drawn ) mock paper flag. Regardless of what that asshole Taranto says she was deliberately murdered by the IDF for peacefully protesting the illegal demolition of Palestinian homes. All the crudity and vulgarity in the world directed at those who protest the treatment of Palestinians in the occupied territories won't change the facts. I can't believe that grown adults - I'm assuming some of you fit that desciption - would approve of the type of hate and violence I see in these e-mails ! OT-

Despite the targeted killing of US personnel, looks like good news for Israel for the next year or so.

John Loftus said sources believe the targeted killing was done with high-tech explosives, possibly smuggled in through the tunnels into Gaza. Major warfare stuff coming in like Katushka rockets and shoulder-fired rockets like Stingers.

Said the killing is believed to have been the work of Hezbollah. But apparently Javier Solana and the EU put the blame directly on Arafat. This may be the end of his EU support. (yawn). He also mentioned how the indigenous Palis are causing trouble for Arafish's authority.

But he thinks the US is putting the blame on flathead Assad. Apparently we will go after Syria in the spring. Looks like some party bigwigs are funneling some of the incoming Iranian cash not only to Hezbollah but to their Swiss bank accounts, maybe in anticipation of fleeing the country when the time comes. What heroes.

Loftus still thinks Iran will get sactions put on by early '04. He thinks 12 months from now will be the end of these regimes. Like Syria, Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, etc.

Just in time for a Paleo state by 2005. How's that for a road map.

PSALM 83

83:1 Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.
83:2 For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.
83:3 They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.
83:4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in
remembrance.
83:5 For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:
83:6 The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes;
83:7 Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;
83:8 Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.
83:9 Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison:
83:10
Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth.
83:11
Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna:
83:12
Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession.
83:13
O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind.
83:14
As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire;
83:15
So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.
83:16
Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD.
83:17
Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:
83:18
That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

# 62 Camel Prophet & # 67 zulubaby:

I'm coming to believe, more and more, that US public schools should not allow any religious dress at all; I agree with uniforms, just not religious attire. Let's face it, a child does not know why he or she dresses a certain way, nor understands the historical implications for doing so. I went to Catholic grade school with IHM sisters, who dressed in a conservative habit. The only visibile parts of their body were their faces and their hands (and, boy, did they know how to use those on us {shudders at the memory}). But these were grown women who made conscious decisions to become nuns and accepted, as a part of that system, the wearing of such conservative clothes. Children can make no conscious decision on this matter. I say let the children be children until they reach the age of 18, when they can vote for themselves as to how they wish to dress. This might also help to stifle the hand-me-down nature of religious intolerance and hatred from parent ot child.

Incredibly, the Detroit News after commenting that the attack yesterday should lead to a crackdown on terrorists has a sidebar that says:

"American victims

The three-year conflict between Israel and the Palestinians had previously killed 49 Americans, most with dual citizenship, and all in random attacks. Wednesday's bombing that killed three U.S. diplomats in Gaza was the first time Americans were intentionally targeted.

Until now, the most notable American death was that of Rachel Corrie, an activist killed March 16 when she placed herself in front of an Israeli bulldozer destroying the home of a terrorist in Gaza."

For my further commentary on this idiotic sidebar that her death is somehow the "most notable", I will shamelessly plug my new weblog: The Shekel

#163 Smit -

I thought Joseph's Tomb was virtually destroyed three years ago?

So much for their claim to be there from time immemorial - they're destroying the graves of the people that are supposedly their ancestors.

This is fucking incredible:

"We are up against a people who think. They survived 2000 years of pogroms not by hitting back but by thinking," Mahathir said. "They
invented Socialism, Communism, human rights and
democracy so that persecuting them would appear
to be wrong, so that they can enjoy equal
rights with others."
"With these they have now gained control of the most powerful countries and they, this tiny
community, have become a world power."

Where are we headed?

179 Maine's Michael  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 5:35:12am

Sorry AG - didn't see your post.

As Malaysia is probably the most technologicaly advanced and economicaly well founded of the islamic states, his words will probably carry quite a bit of weight.

He is, of course, preaching to the choir, but still . . .

He's also Chirac's buddy.

Mahatahir's party the Malays likes to hand out copies of Henry Ford's admitted mythyology text "The International Jew". "They" is Mahatahir referring to the Jews. "European" is the equivalent to "Zionist" in SE Asian republics.

Arab press routinely praises Mahatahir's indulgence of Jews.

The spew that is coming out of his mouth is beyond comprehension. What hate, what drivel!

Scary, but typical of Jew-hating moonbats. They always attribute the Jews with a demonic power out of all proportion to their small numbers. How else to explain Israel's military victories over her Arab neighbours? And isn't it all codified in everyone's favorite Czarist forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the Malaysian moonbat's handout of choice?

Muslims of the world unite - against Jews

"They succeeded in gaining control in most of the [world's] powerful states, and they – a tiny community – became a world power. But 1.3 billion Muslims must not be defeated by a few million Jews. A way must be found."
Thus opined the prime minister of Malaysia, Mahtir Mohammad at the opening of the two-day Organization of Islamic States summit he is currently hosting.
"The Europeans killed six million Jews out of 12 million, but today the Jews are in control of the world via their proxies. They lead others to fight and die for them."
Warming to the anti-Semitic theme, the Palestinian delegate Mohammad a-Farrah said, "If we are weak, no one will support us. The Israelis respect only the strong, and we must therefore all unite."

OT, If the Eternal Jews can beat the Crimson Jihad tonight, than I won't have to worry about the next K-T type asteroid until next October, otherwise I'll have to hope the Marlins can save us.

Face it, if the Cubs actually won they wouldn't be lovable (loveable?) anymore, plus think of all the money the local businesses outside Wrigley aren't spending replacing smashed windows and burnt out cars ala Detroit.

I'm sure State is all for selling JDAMS to Egypt, but does the DoD have any say about selling weapons to a country we may have to bomb someday?

188 Viking the Kitten  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 6:09:58am

Re: JDAMS and Apaches

Advanced weapons sales to primitive countries do not bother me too much. In the early fifties, the USAF was concerned if the Soviet Mig-15 was superior to the US F-86. Chuck Yeager participated in the fly-off. In almost every test, the F-86 came out on top... but when Yeager flew the MiG against an inexperienced pilot, he won.

Equipment alone does not win wars. Training wins wars. And no country on Earth trains better than the US and Israel.

189 Maine's Michael  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 6:15:07am

Viking Kitten

Yes, but what if they manage, out of the hundred JDAMS they get, to land one?

That's more casualties for the good guys than they would otherwise have had.

190 Judith Gordon  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 6:35:51am

Where to begin?

#62 re headcovering, personally I think it is a personal choice and if a kid wants to dress funny they for their religious expression they should be allowed to. I'd be pretty pissed if my son had been forbidden to wear his kippah in school if he wanted to. I know a woman from Iran who left because she felt she should have the religious choice of wearing or not wearing her headcovering as a sign of her personal religious devotion. She thought it was very wrong to make all women look religious by having all of them cover heir heads. When her life was threatened for her uncovered head she fled here as a refugee. After she arrived and had her freedom, she made the choice to cover her head because she is a deeply religious woman. Freedom of religious expression means also having the freedom to choose to be religious.

#119 Precise illustration of why the USA is in such toruble. Too many insiders stabbing at her gut. Reminds me of hook worms. Some smart neocon needs to invent a LLL deworming pill.

#136 Thank you. I laughed so hard I think I pulled a muscle in my gut.

#143 Maybe York U will finally do something. We have the moonbats and Morlocks here too but fortunately they were defeated last student election by a huge turnout from the Israel Asper school of business. (Yeah Izzy!)

#184 This is an example of what hookwork investation leads to. You weaken the immune system and end up getting infected parvo too. On the bright side, I don't think either an apache or a JDAM can fit through a Rafah smuggling tunnel.

Finally-(this was one really really great thread!) my son went on Birthright last June and he started trembling with joy when he first told me about spending Shavuot at the wall. I could go on and on about all the wonderful and lifechanging events he experienced during his trip. Yes, a couple of hookworm larvae get a free ride. Still the vast majority of these kids go to Israel and come home loving it more than they ever knew they could. Birthright just needs to find a way to deworm the planes. It shouldn't be shut down.

191 Viking the Kitten  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 6:36:25am

You do have a point. And, yeah, I would prefer not to see our government selling dangerous weapons to primitive, warlike cultures. (Where's the Prime Directive when you need it?) I do think the Israelis can handle the Egyptians, though. You can't do much with JDAMS or Apaches if they're blown to pieces before they get off the ground.

The only way to solve many of the education problems in the US is to cease government financing of Education. Get the federal govt out of it first. Then move on to get the state governments out as well.

And the bloody unions. Let's not forget those wonderful people.

OT: Lowering Academic Standards is Bigoted: Pol

Assemblywoman ClarK deserves high praise for her statements. Probably also high dudgeon from the NEA and Randi Weingarten (head of the teacher's union).

"Government funding" of schools basically means you have to buy a house in an expensive neighborhood, so your kids can get a good education.

With private schools, you just have to pay tuition.
