LGF

Well, that was interesting. The entire Hosting Matters system went down for a few hours. Did you miss me?

UPDATE: Hosting Matters was the target of a major Denial of Service attack tonight; not specifically against LGF, but apparently against a site on another server on their network.

DOS attack? hmm. maybe the little DOS run the othernigth wasa set up for something bigger.

21 AB  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:07:51pm

Would be funny if the denial of service attacks came from Egypt.

22 Charles  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:08:29pm

See my update above. Hosting Matters was targeted tonight.

23 zach_attack  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:09:32pm

Was it all blogs, or just American ones, or even just non-lll blogs that were knocked?

24 reaganite  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:09:43pm

Oh great, I spend the week in Fresno and I finally get home after a wickedly long plane ride and LGF is down! I got a nice email from evariste (thanks dude) proving me correct about the latest banned (again) fool!

38 K.  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:18:09pm

So which site got attacked?

39 SoCalJustice  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:18:23pm
a major Denial of Service attack tonight

plus the curse of the Bambino... strange juju tonight.

40 Jewels (aka Julian)  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:20:23pm

DOS attack? Hmm, maybe the little DOS run the other night was a set up for something bigger.

41 evariste  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:22:14pm

Naw, it was aimed at a different site that uses HostingMatters. Plus when lgf first started being semi-unresponsive, I could still load the top half of the page and the users number wasn't going up this time.

42 Craig  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:23:17pm

Glad it wasn't serious. I was worried that Allah shut down the Internet because he was busy watching Crimson Jihad lose to the New York Zionists.

#39 SoCalJustice

Perhaps there is a connection, hmm? Maybe the DoS was meant to keep Yankee fans from gloating online.

BTW, gloat gloat!

Network Operations Center. Where frame relay and T-1/3 circuts are usually administrated and servers a monitored. I happen to work in one

So who was attacked on hosting matters ?

47 pbird  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:27:03pm

Really nice that my home page works again. I was beginning to worry about high weirdness... Glad to see you all back.

48 evariste  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:30:13pm

lgf outages make baby jesus cry.

49 Targetpractice  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:32:05pm

#48 evariste

:-) -- but nice to see all is well again, removing twinge of worry for Charles. (thinks to self - must hit tip jar!)

Am very curious though - who indeed was the target?

51 evariste  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:34:46pm

Hostingmatters doesn't seem to be saying on the two threads where they are discussing it.

52 evariste  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:35:40pm

On a side note: Damn, it's good to see you all! That was so boring! I actually watched tv for a while-yuk!

53 Catbert  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:36:01pm

I thought it might have been something like that or maybe DNS issues on Earthlink when LGF and Instapundit were both inaccessible.

54 Lurking Minion  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:36:09pm

Well now so THIS is what a DoS attack looks like... interesting graphic, imagine if that were a seismograph.

Has anyone found out who the cockroaches were after?

Yeah, most of my fav's were down tonight. Glad it's back up now. I was forced to focus strictly on the B-ball game. I had a lousy day at work today, hoping that a Red Sox win and LGF and Co. would cheer me up alittle. Go figure.

57 CC Señor  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 8:40:25pm

Of course, if a Muslim professor in the U.S. said the same thing about Allah being bigger the LLL would grant him tenure.

Why not? Lennon didn't raise that much of a stink with his Beatles being bigger than Christ remark.

65 NTropy  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 9:41:39pm

#64   evariste

I got home from my substitute teaching assignment at ~3:30 and have been trying to get here ever since. Instantman was down too.

On a better note, it gave me the chance to clean miscellaneous gunk from my keyboard and shave the scruff off my neck (did I say that out loud?) I mean catch up on some long neglected websites. I know, I know! I forgot they were out there too.

66 evariste  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 9:43:56pm

Yeah, I don't like other websites, they're nowhere near as fun! Unless they give me something to post OT here and maybe get a "lol" or a hat tip!
Just (half-)kidding. :-P

67 Stacy  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 9:46:45pm
#7 Meryl Yourish 10/16/2003 09:58PM PST

Damn, yes.

You know, maybe I won't go to Hosting Matters after all...

Meryl, don't be ridiculous. Crap like this happens to every host, more often than you'd think.

And to answer all the speculators above, we may not currently divulge the name of the site, but it appears to be a pro-Israeli site, commenting on and reporting on activities in the Middle East. This is not to say that we don't host pro-Palestinian sites too but no one has attacked those, to our knowledge. We typically host just about anything that's legal, politics notwithstanding.

"Someone Set Up Us the Bomb!"

(with apologies, considering the usual subject matter here, it really isn't that funny. Must have (twitch) been the (ack) outage (shudder))

69 evariste  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 9:52:22pm

Stacy-yeah, I'm about to advise someone on who to get as a host. At first (during the outage) I had no other information besides Instabackup and I was thinking, "man, these guys suck, they aren't even emailing Instapundit back to tell him what's going on, and this after that fire" but after reading the forums I realize that you guys did a very good job given what was going on.
I am definitely going to be recommending you.

70 evariste  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 9:53:27pm

OTOH, I think that was less than properly obsequious given that Meryl is a prospective customer! lol

71 zulubaby  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 9:54:28pm

I was in the middle of agreeing with CAIR that Gen Boykin should be reassigned ( and promoted and selected to be Head of the Joint Chiefs ) when I lost LGF.
Now the thread is gone? wha?

73 Lizardoid Minion #32603  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 9:56:58pm

While we undeniably love Glenn (and he us), he one client among 3K, and not typically our first thought. Getting the incoming traffic blocked, setting up backup forums on a remote server, working with the NOC to restore connectivity...we were a bit busy. Hell, I did his site move/redesign ages ago and I forgot he had a backup Blogschpot site.

75 evariste  Thu, Oct 16, 2003 10:02:42pm

Oh, I don't blame you. I understand now, having read your forums. My sense of proportion has been recalibrated ;-)

LGF Chicagoland was on top of it.

The junkies, addicts, and users at Chicagoland were all concerned (going through withdrawal) about the missing LGF.

Personally I'm not addicted at all. I just decided that I'd rather sleep than stay on the computer waiting.

I'm glad you are back. Whew. I was starting to sweat.

Charles, I am SO glad you're back!

That whole experience was very painful. I couldn't sleep all night due to the anxiety. My blood pressure is elevated, I'm sure. I still feel lightheaded. All in all, I got pretty sick over this.

Is there an attorney in the house? ;-)

Hey I'm back (and I'm proud) too. Got fired on Monday after creative differences with my boss. So lame. Four years of great work, and we have one (loud) argument and it's outsville for me.

The tension at work explains my LGF absence.

88 Ed Moran: Remembers C. Chambliss homer against KC  Fri, Oct 17, 2003 1:48:58am

ISM home page ( linked via Allah) didn't go down, so I spent my time righting the webmaster:

Dear Pal Solidarity Web Master,

Israel offered Arafat 98% of the Occupied Territories, including much of Jerusalem. He rejected it, and has directed ever increasing attacks, justifying the construction of a security fence.

I'm sure you're a well meaning but misguided socialist kind of person, but if a Palestine comes into existence it will almost certainly be an Islamic state similar to the Taliban, where the Christians will be driven out, the homosexuals will be tortured and murdered, and women will be stoned as punishment for being raped, and everything that the world so loves about Saudi Arabia and loved about the Taliban will come in spades to the new Palestine. New terror attacks will be planned for the remainder of Israel for the concept of a non-Muslim state anywhere in the Middle East in anathema to the Muslims.

I suppose you also realize that Rachel Corrie died defending the very tunnels used to smuggle in the explosives used to kill 3 US citizens yesterday?

You know, I never much cared about the Arab/Israeli conflict, and accepted the whole "cycle of violence" lie. But knowing that Palestinians celebrated the murder of 3000 Americans in September 2001, and again celebrated yesterday when Americans were killed, makes me realize they are not a peaceful or civilized people.

I'm sure you are set in your beliefs, but I hope you at least consider that all the Palestinians killed by Israel the last few years, except for guerilla leaders, were killed by accident or in self defense, whereas every Israeli civilian killed, including little babies, was quite intentional.

Thanks,

Ed Moran

89 Ed Moran: Remembers C. Chambliss homer against KC  Fri, Oct 17, 2003 1:53:28am

I meant to say "righting" instead of "writing".

I still remember the perfect baseball team from my youth in Massapequa. Chambliss at First, Willie randolph at second, Bucky Dent at Short, Nettles at Third. Thurman catching. The Ragin Cajun, Catfish, Sparky, Goose, Mickey Rivers, Lou Piniella, Reggie, Doc Medich.

Alas, I turned off the TV after Wells gave up the homer. However, I journeyed to enemy territory in 1978 to see one of the Crimson Jihad games the Yanks swept when they came from 14 games down in August to force the famous Bucky Dent playoff game.

My Astros have made me miserable for a looong time.

So I am happy.

And, by the way, I need advanced notice of the next time LGF's host goes down or is attacked.

That freaking sucked.

The strangest thing happened. I upgraded to version 9.0 of AOL then found out I couldn't log on LGF.

Deleted the whole ball of wax

back on version 8 now

OK so it didn't have anything to do with Version 9 cool!

Kind of feel funny about that strongly worded message I sent them. Hope the AOL people don't spend too much time working out the "bugs" in the version 9.0 ( I told them about).

Chris Chambliss played first base for the Yankees in the glorious 1970s. I think he is a coach now, not sure which team.

I just remember his homerun against the Royals that won the Yankees a pennant back in the day.

Too bad my startup folded, it had a pretty good set of devices for dealing with such things...

119 aaron  Fri, Oct 17, 2003 5:26:00am

Background:

Supporters of a number of Al Qaida-affiliated forums registered to Saudis and running in Malaysia basically declared an online Jihad against Haganah after 8 such sites lost their third party DNS service a couple of weeks ago (the DNS provider decided they didn't want to provide services to such folks). The result was that the sites dropped offline, and four of them remain offline.

GeoCities sites have been used to distribute the attack tools, and a site at Everyone's Internet posted howto graphics that show not just how to use the tools, but specifically how to use them to attack our site.

Hosting Matters has done their best to keep the site online in the face of an increasing level of hostile traffic, but there's only so much one can do unless you can get someone at the backbone level to block the incoming 'rounds.'

The only long-term solution for us is to either go underground or distribute the site as mirrors located at multiple locations. The latter approach takes money and/or donated server accounts. Estimated cost is about $3500/year, and we currently have $150 in our PayPal account.

I'm adding subscription/repeating donation options to the PayPal offerings, we're about to roll out a line of merchandise, snail-mail donations can be made (address available upon request), etc. We'll see how it goes.

The odds of the Feds doing anything to bring the people responsible to justice are virtually nil.

Yes Chuck, that is exactly what I am saying. Haganah is something of a known quantity in places like Saudi Arabia and Egypt and Syria. These guys take their web sites very seriously, since the sites are an important part of their communications infrastructure. This situation has been developing over the last few weeks.

Knocking off our web site is easier than, say, knocking me off, what with that loaded gun that's here beside my keyboard...

Charles: Yes, Annette has been in contact directly to confirm that Haganah was the target. I really can't say enough good things about Hosting Matters. Details about the attack are not ready for release yet. Cleanup will take a while, but what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

And as for those sites that the Feds didn't want listed, I got bad news: all bets are off. I know for a fact that sites used to plan this attack are under surveillance, and did anyone in the US give me a heads up?

Hell no.

The Israelis, on the other hand, have done their level best to keep me informed, despite the fact that Haganah's efforts to take down Jihadi sites, and their efforts to monitor those sites, sometimes conflict. Nevertheless, they at least realize that we're all on the same side. I'm not so sure about the folks in and around the Beltway, however.

As for my response: if we can raise the money, we set up multiple mirrors. If we can't raise the money, we go underground and screw the public education component. What you don't know *can* hurt you, but we can only do so much, and we don't have to do it publically to be effective. I just always thought that raising awareness of this issue (terrorist use of the internet) was important. I still think it's important, but frankly I may not have much choice.

142 Kathy K  Fri, Oct 17, 2003 9:33:09am

Aaron,

Quite honestly, I think your best bet is to go semi-underground. Get a site with some innocous DNS and set up a private forum for those you know you can trust. Disperse the educational parts of your present site amongst multiple blogs. I'm sure a lot of people would be happy to mirror that info.

I'm not sure what happened with the monitoring gang from Regis' IH forum (I'm sure you'll know who I'm talking about if you think about it) but I suspect they've gone underground -- unless they gave up due to lack of interest by the Feds. You might want to get in touch with them (if you aren't still in touch) and see if they could offer some suggestions. I know you weren't exactly seeing eye-to-eye back when but I don't think they really hated you or anything. They just thought it better to monitor than take down. (Quite frankly, I agree with them.)

143 speedster1  Fri, Oct 17, 2003 9:33:29am

Seems to me that this works both ways. No hacker myself (but a darn fast two-fingered typist), but there must be some way to (probably the wrong word) counter-attack these sites.

Whether or not that's a good idea is, of course, debatable. And I guess the downside is that, altho the fibbies (probably) won;t go after the Mooslims, they would probably go after one of the good guys.

Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits took to changing that lyric when he performed the song live, he would say "f-ker" instead of that other f-word.
I've heard that the original might refer to the tendency of male rock stars to dress up like women and wear makeup.
Dire Straits also has a whole song about gay men which is quite light-hearted, its "Les Boys"

148 Kathy K  Fri, Oct 17, 2003 10:32:45am

In very simple terms, a denial of service (DOS) attack sends information so fast that it overloads the lines.
I can't really explain better than that without getting technical. A DOS attack doesn't really harm servers but makes it impossible to access them.

Frank IBC.

Actually, it was the colored hair and the earring and makeup aspect of the lyrics that gave me cause to satirize that stanza, as a depiction of the LLL.

See the little faggot with the earring and the makeup

But since you have appointed yourself the resident PC Police...

Why don't you rewrite all the song lyrics the may give you cause to feel offense.

While you're at it...You can rewite all the rap songs that depict women as bitches, sluts and "hos.

And if your feeling really ambitious...You can rewrite Tom Sawyer and the Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, and delete all those "offensive" "racist" passages.

156 Frank IBC  Fri, Oct 17, 2003 12:18:24pm

Fiery Celt -

Words mean things. You seem rather clueless to the consequences of your choice of words. It is an extremely offensive term regardless of the context.

I don't buy your excuse that all you're doing is repeating something someone else said 20 years ago, nor the excuse that "everyone else does it too".

157 fiery celt  Fri, Oct 17, 2003 12:52:15pm

Frank IBC,

Admit it !!!

You didn't get the joke, because you were not familiar with the song (which itself originally was a satire)...

Since you didn't get the joke...You decided to take offence and imply that I was a racist or a bigot.

Since an accusation of bigotry is indefensible...Then, I won't bother with it or you.

Since you would prefer to rewrite of disavow any aspects of our culture or history, that may give "someone" offense...I can only say one thing to you.
Bullshit!!! Offensive enough???

Frank, take your PC censorship somewhere else,...

In fact here is a Perfect Occupation for you...

Here is the most perfect forum to push your "non-offensive" politically correct brand of "NEWSPEAK"...

161 Frank IBC  Fri, Oct 17, 2003 3:42:32pm

Fiery Celt -

As I said in my original post, I realize that your intention was motivated by humor and not hatred. I admitted in a subsequent post that I did not know the origin of those lyrics. I don't feel you posted that with the explicit intention of offending anyone other than the LLLs. You could have said what I just did - and I would have accepted that explanation and we both could have moved on.

As I read my #156 again, I realize that the second paragraph was more strongly worded than it should have been. I apologize for that. However, I feel that the lengthy and extremely defensive and emotional reply in #157 was unwarranted, as were many of the assumptions contained therein.

(Perhaps you might want to examine my record as a "PC Crusader"?)
