Wiley Drake’s Imprecatory Prayers

Religion • Views: 5,395

If you’re asking God to harm someone, is it really “God” you’re praying to? Associated Baptist Press - Drake, former SBC officer, says he’s praying for Obama to die (updated).

Wiley Drake, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, Calif., and former running mate of American Independent Party presidential candidate Alan Keyes, said June 2 on Fox News Radio he didn’t understand why people were upset with his comments quoted by Associated Baptist Press from a webcast of his daily radio talk show.

“Imprecatory prayer is agreeing with God, and if people don’t like that, they need to talk to God,” Drake told syndicated talk-show host Alan Colmes. “God said it, I didn’t. I was just agreeing with God.”

Asked if there are others for whom Drake is praying “imprecatory prayer,” Drake hesitated before answering that there are several. “The usurper that is in the White House is one, B. Hussein Obama,” he said.

Later in the interview, Colmes returned to Drake’s answer to make sure he heard him right.

“Are you praying for his death?” Colmes asked.

“Yes,” Drake replied.

“So you’re praying for the death of the president of the United States?”

“Yes.”

Colmes asked Drake if he was concerned that by saying that he might be placed on a Secret Service or FBI watch list, and if he believed it appropriate to talk or pray that way.

“I think it’s appropriate to pray the Word of God,” Drake said. “I’m not saying anything. What I am doing is repeating what God is saying, and if that puts me on somebody’s list, then I’ll just have to be on their list.”

“You would like for the president of the United States to die?” Colmes asked once more.

“If he does not turn to God and does not turn his life around, I am asking God to enforce imprecatory prayers that are throughout the Scripture that would cause him death, that’s correct.”

The current President of the Southern Baptist Convention has denounced Drake: Pastor’s comments on Tiller ‘unbiblical’.

Dr. Johnny Hunt, pastor of First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Georgia, and president of the SBC, says Drake’s comments are out of line.

“[That’s a] terrible statement, [a] very unbiblical statement,” Hunt responds. “I’m still encouraged that the [Book of] Proverbs teaches that God has the water in a channel — and my prayer has always that God would turn hearts.”

Imprecate: to curse, to invoke evil on.

That doesn't sound like any God I worship.

I hate to tell this man this, but there are zillions of elderly black church ladies praying for Obama's well-being, and I have a sneaking suspicion that their prayers may count for more than his.

Unfortunately, my people have the Pulsa diNura.

Used on Rabin.

Pulsa diNura or Pulsa Denoura. (Aramaic: פולסא דנורא "lashes of fire") is a purportedly kabbalistic ceremony in which the angels of destruction are invoked to block heavenly forgiveness of the subject’s sins, causing all the curses named in the Bible to befall him resulting in his death. However, the Torah prohibits to pray that something bad should happen to someone else. Rather it offers the solution to pray that the bad in the person dies and he becomes a righteous person. The source for this modern ritual is not to be found in Kabbalah, but among the Hebrew magical manuals of antiquity, such as Sefer ha-Razim and Harba de-Moshe.[1]

The Hitchens/Dawkins brigade have a real point, in Drake's case: Religion is just a mask for this guy's madness, a justification for his evil.

The best way to make the anti-religion crowd win the argument is to fulfill their worst predictions about you.

Irony would be for Wiley Drake to pass on, and get to the pearly gates. On meeting God, Wiley would no doubt ask why he died.

"Because, Wiley, someone with more pull than you invoked an imprecatory prayer."

Mr. Drake, I don't believe God would do that to you.

I also don't believe God would do that for you.

There are also rarely-used "hexes" in paganism. Zsuzanna Budapest (famous witch figure in the '80s) did a similar "hex" on rapists wishing for their deaths, and caused great controversy in the pagan community -- if it was OK to use "magick" for negative purposes.

Most religions have such an aspect, but most are embarrassed by it.

People Choose News That Fits Their Views

Conservatives buck the trend

Some findings from both researchers suggest that individual confidence and certainty play a role in what people choose to read.

People with stronger party affiliation, conservative political views, and greater interest in politics proved more likely to click on articles with opposing views, according to the Ohio State study.

"It appears that people with these characteristics are more confident in their views and so they're more inclined to at least take a quick look at the counterarguments," Knobloch-Westerwick noted.

However, Knobloch-Westerwick added that her latest study was not designed to assess reader motives, and that she hopes to more carefully study the issue in the future.

The Brigham Young University survey found that journalists also tended to read liberal blogs - perhaps a reflection of journalists' political beliefs, although even conservatives said liberal blogs were often better-written, Davis pointed out.

Among the political blog readers, a similar trend emerged in which "liberals read almost exclusively liberal blogs, but conservatives tend to read both," Davis said.

Interesting read.

Rats. Right now it says "Story to Follow." I'm really hoping this is a victory for secured bondholders. If not, the bond market will be in deep trouble. People purchase bonds for the extra protection they offer. Without it, who would take the risk?

46 jcm  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 1:13:07pm

Lord's Prayer....

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.

God's will is accomplished, done in heaven, it still needs to be done on earth.

First point: the Christian principal is to pray God's will into being on earth. It is not necessarily to take action. Taking action is another discussion, and is manifest by the fruit of the Spirit.

Second point: The Christian through that prayer is to discover what God's will is. Not make our will, our opinion, our desires into God's will.

And it's a plan that's working well. Why do you think that Pat Buchanan is always a pundit on TV? Why does Huckabee have his own show? Why is Ron Paul and his followers getting so much press?

Chrysler Fiat Sale Delayed by U.S. Justice Ginsburg (Update1)
2009-06-08 20:19:05.817 GMT

(Adds Ginsburg quote in third paragraph.)

By Greg Stohr and Tiffany Kary
June 8 (Bloomberg) -- Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ordered a
delay in Chrysler LLC’s planned asset sale to a group led by
Italy’s Fiat SpA while the U.S. Supreme Court considers a
request for a longer postponement that might scuttle the deal.
A federal appeals court in New York last week allowed the
sale, while ordering the decision put on hold until 4 p.m. today
Washington time to let opponents seek Supreme Court
intervention. Indiana pension funds and consumer groups asked
for an order blocking the sale while the Supreme Court decides
whether to take up the funds’ appeal.
Ginsburg’s one-sentence order, which came only in the
pension fund case, said the bankruptcy court orders allowing the
sale “are stayed pending further order” of the Supreme Court.
Chrysler said in court papers that the sale is necessary to
stanch losses of $100 million a day. Chrysler said the sale,
which would transfer its Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge brands, would
help save 38,500 jobs plus those of workers at its suppliers.
Fiat has set a June 15 deadline for completion of the deal.
The Indiana pension funds hold $42.5 million of $6.9
billion in Chrysler secured loans.

There's nothing wrong with praying for good things for people, so I pray that our American way of life to be preserved, if that is God's will. The main thing that I had to learn with prayer is that sometimes God responds either with a "no/yes", or "wait and see what my real plan is".

Prince Humperdinck: That may be the first time in my life a man has dared insult me.
Westley: It won't be the last. To the pain means the first thing you will lose will be your feet below the ankles. Then your hands at the wrists. Next your nose.
Prince Humperdinck: And then my tongue I suppose, I killed you too quickly the last time. A mistake I don't mean to duplicate tonight.
Westley: I wasn't finished. The next thing you will lose will be your left eye followed by your right.
Prince Humperdinck: And then my ears, I understand let's get on with it.
Westley: WRONG. Your ears you keep and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out, "Dear God! What is that thing," will echo in your perfect ears. That is what to the pain means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever.
Prince Humperdinck: I think your bluffing.
Westley: It's possible, Pig, I might be bluffing. It's conceivable, you miserable, vomitous mass, that I'm only lying here because I lack the strength to stand. But, then again... perhaps I have the strength after all.

I don't think anyone should be praying for Obama's death. It's the best way to turn him into a martyr. For better or worse, we have two years of unimpeded Democratic control of our federal government. It'll be a very rough ride. If current spending levels and policies continue, the U.S. economy will be severely damaged.

After several months on the NY Public Library waiting list, I picked up a copy today of "The Mystery of the Kaddish". It's somewhat comforting to me to reflect on just how far removed from Wiley Drake's abject lunacy is a prayer like Kaddish or indeed any prayer that I've ever encountered.

Thinking about Drake's comments, I remembered that the ancient Romans used to write curses, defixiones, on lead sheets, sometimes in mirror writing, and then fold the sheets up and throw them into wells or pools or bury them under the ground or even in graves.

Chrysler said in court papers that the sale is necessary to stanch losses of $100 million a day. Chrysler said the sale, which would transfer its Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge brands, would help save 38,500 jobs plus those of workers at its suppliers.

None that I know of.

As an aside, Jewish Law sets an extraordinarily high standard for capital punishment. The act must be witnessed by at least two people, and a third uninvolved person must warn the offender that he is committing murder, a capital sin, and s/he must answer "I know, and I'm going to do it anyway."

Against a background like that, I seriously doubt that there are prayers in Judaism to wish for the early demise of anyone --even a mortal enemy.

re: #164 quickjustice

I'll ask a harder question: would it have been appropriate to have prayed for Hitler's death, or Tojo's, once the enormity of their crimes was publicly exposed?

Theologically misguided. If free will means anything, it includes the freedom to make bad decisions and have the chickens come home to roost in consequence. Otherwise, the bad decisions aren't really made.

So when we failed to stop Hitler when it would have been easy, our own decisions, aggregated, had their consequences. It's deluded to think that God is going to make-it-didn't-happen. Our own moving fingers write. That's what free will entails. And so in 1943, one may reasonably pray for courage in battle, for a steady hand and wise judgment. Prayers for a bolt of lightning from the clear sky, killing Hitler in his bed, miss the point.

We are responsible for our decisions and their consequences, and the stakes are unlimited. There is no end to how bad we'll be allowed to screw up. There is no limit to how high we'll be allowed to soar, provided only that we not get too conceited.

And if we do screw up badly, it'll take some human heroes and martyrs to set things right. And if we screw up totally and drive the earth into the sun or some such apocalyptic and irrecoverable misstep, why, that will be the end of us.

Wiley Drake, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, Calif., and former running mate of American Independent Party presidential candidate Alan Keyes, said June 2 on Fox News Radio he didn't understand why people were upset with his comments quoted by Associated Baptist Press from a webcast of his daily radio talk show.

I don't think you can characterize this as a lefty 'entrapment.'

Yeah, but till I read this here I never heard of this nut job. So in this case nut job was more than willing to go public, but Colmes was more than willing to imply he is an example of those on the right. Hopefully, Reverend Nutjob does not represent more than a small percentage.

I think a lot of people who never really had any real responsibility nor ran anything with real accountability in their life tend to omni-personify a President--particularly blaming them for things they themselves are powerless to change. Bush derangement was like that.

Um...what exactly are they supposed to do?

A Congregationalist church could remove him from his pulpit, if the membership voted to do so. It's called "revoking the call." But I don't know if Baptists can do that, under their rules.

Most Christian denominations Pastors serve at the pleasure of the congregation. They ask a pastor to leave. If there is any type of national organization, they can also remove a pastor.

re: #239 MandyManners

Can the elders boot him out?

I'm not a Baptist, so I have no clue. The Presbyterians could; the Lutherans could, I think; the Methodists almost certainly. But the Baptists' rules aren't clear to me - I haven't looked at them in a long time.

I just got told they're also congregationally ruled, so the congregation could revoke his call.

A Southern Baptist Convention spokesman said Drake is is out of the denomination’s mainstream. Roger “Sing” Oldham, vice president for convention relations with the SBC Executive Committee, said he believes most Southern Baptists are committed to praying for the well-being of the president as instructed in Scripture—not for his demise. Drake is not a spokesman for the Southern Baptist Convention and his comments do not reflect the actions, resolutions or positions of the denomination, Oldham said.

“I think it is a fair statement to say that the vast majority of Southern Baptists are committed to praying for the well-being of the president in accordance with the specific instruction given in 1 Timothy 2:1-3,” Oldham said, quoting: “First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good, and it pleases God our Savior.’”

However, in our daily prayers, we do pray that the "Malshinim", enemies of G-d and similar evil-doers be eradicated and uprooted. To the best of my knowledge Malshinim are traitors to the Jewish people, such as the ones who sow deliberate falsehoods such as the medieval blood libel

Orthodox Jews believe that the "hearts and minds of Princes and Kings are in the hands of G-d" so it would be appropriate to pray that our President be shielded from the lessons he learned from his former Pastor.

The march is sponsored by the Dallas Peace Center, which has been involved in protests with Sheehan since 2005, when the California mother staged a prolonged demonstration outside Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas.

“I think this is going to be the protest of the summer,” Sheehan said. “It’s really picking up a lot of energy.”

fraud.

Avanti ... I have heard this almost word for word from the ACORN people ... IMO this is how the registration fraud affected the election ...

From the beginning the Axelrod team wanted to "push" messages ... you may not know how they do it but most here do ... they pushed the message that the democrats were getting way more people registered ... the media of course picks that up and runs with it ...

This continues through the primaries ... ACORN registers more voters who say they are leaning Obama not Clinton ... further pushing the message that Clinton is not "electable" ... push all the other crap that came out of South Carolina and Oprah factor ... there you go ... Obama the only democrat that can take the republicans on ... (not true but that was the message they were pushing) .... on to the general ...

Again ... push push push ... the democrats are registering record numbers of voters ... surely the country will only want a democrat ... how could this many people be wrong ... it was the PERCEPTION THEY WERE PUSHING ...

You may not have "seen" it because you did not want to see it ... IT HAPPENED! ... the media pushed this message strong ... Avanti ... you were not here or anywhere during the election to see the other side of what happened ... or if you were ... YOU DID NOT PAY ATTENTION! ... if you really took a look at what the democrats did ... you would see it was planned ...

One quick post, and then baseball.

As someone who's politics skew right, (as I have admitted openly before) we need to denounce the m/fer's with the strongest voice possible.

I defend people of faith as I see them under attack by the media, but this shit does not help their cause whatsoever. As someone who falls to the pro-life side of the fence, we need to not only shun, but weed out the types who think murder is the antidote for a pro-life state of mind, and worse, act upon it.

It is totally hypocritical to bitch and wine about how the media portrays folks who would never condone this, but sit on the sidelines while this asshole gets the defacto nomination as the right's spokesman.

I have massive disagreements with the left. No matter how much I can't stand what Obama stands for rhetorically, his politics, or world view, the guys still has 2 daughters, a wife, and family.

I shake the dirt off my shoes.

So far, I have not seen proof of any voter fraud by Acorn, registration fraud yes. Actually false votes, not so much. If the election came down to under 100 votes, maybe, but even then, all 100 would not be in one swing state. Here's a five year study on actual fraud.

fraud.

I wonder what her son would think of her reaction to his choice if he could talk to her from Beyond. I doubt it'd be a happy reunion.

Unknown and unknowable. But her continued pursuit of the bizarre and ridiculous are exposing a deep-seated mental illness. She has proselytized about her son's death since it happened, but has never taken the time to grieve for him. She is in an emotional and mental state of suspension and denial, and I expect her outbursts will only get worse as the situation continues to go unresolved. The decreasing media attention - a sop to her histrionics - will probably also contribute to escalation as she attempts to once again wrap herself in the limelight that kept her from facing her own sorrow for so long.

Harm to herself or others is a very real possibility. And her "friends" on the extreme Left who found her to be such a useful tool are now nowhere to be found, and are doing nothing to help her.

No. But we've all been around the block enough times to recognize what's going on with this woman, I think. I've never lost a child, but I can imagine how tempting it would be to deny that such an event had actually happened, and to find endless activities and distractions to keep from facing it. I think such a reaction is probably normal. What's not normal is having that reaction thrust into the national spotlight, and being manipulated by others intent on using your grief to serve political ends, constantly goading you into making more and more extreme statements while giving you what you need so much - a distraction from that overwhelming grief threatening to swallow you. And I think, too, that most people have experience with what happens when you repress strong emotions for too long - they generally find a way to the surface despite your best efforts, often in unpleasant ways.

Would it be a crime to use a semi-sharp object to sratch off that sticker?

re: #489 kynna

I said this back when she started. The leftists were exploiting her breakdown for all it was worth. I knew they would dump her at some point and she'd be left with nothing more than her deferred grief. She did a horrible thing, IMO, and she put other mother's sons in a great deal more danger by encouraging the enemy, but I always knew it was a shield from the true meaning of what had happened.

She needs help. Nobody on the left will give it to her and she would never accept it from anyone on the right.

You and I are on the same page. I've also felt she was being exploited since she first surfaced, and that it would wind up badly for her.

I was thinking more in terms of putting another bumper sticker on top of it, saying simply "Have a Nice Day." So as not to risk damaging his car.

Ironically, that would be a crime, but calling for the violent murder of the president of the United States is perfectly fine, as long as it's a Republican you're talking about murdering.

I think her brains were scrambled long before her son was killed.

Unless you propose that someone besides his congregation remove him from his pulpit? I can't see that as anything but interference of a most obnoxious sort.

No they aren't. They are evil people, simple enough. I've also written articles about most of those mentioned pretty much slamming them all. You seem to think atheism is some kind of belief system that proselytizes, with some kind of consistent belief system. It's not. It's just non belief.

#431 Thanos

It is a problem for Christians in general. This doesn't help their image anymore than Ibramin Hooper helps moderate muslim's image, although Hooper's never gone as far as saying he prays for a president's death.

In #383 sattv4u2 identified a large group of evil people who committed atrocities. By your reasoning in #361 and #431 - "this guy is your problem...It is a problem for Christians in general..." then we can say all the evil done by those non-believers are your problem, as they constitute a sample of the population who share non-belief and have committed evil atrocities.

By your logic we could then say evil actions done by non-believers are because they are non-believers.

Registration fraud is a given. Acorn is under investiagtion for voter fraud in I believe eight states.

The simple fact is that in the last five years there have been about 100 charged with actual fraud with 60 convictions, not enough to effect the vote especially since they were spread around the country. No question Acorn has been involved in registration fraud, most cases reported by Acorn themselves. I think her brains were scrambled long before her son was killed.

She certainly had leanings to the far Left long before her son's death. But they became a crutch, and more, to her in helping to avoid dealing with her sorrow. Others might have withdrawn into other obsessive behavior. Her own response, already close at hand, helped catapult her onto the front page, and her emotional death spiral was locked in place.

I meant for you to take one of PBO's new permanent government jobs...remember he's creating 600,000 of them and they will pay well and have benefits. I told my two older sons to look for a job tied to the government...they won't go belly-up. It pains me to tell my sons that, but the private sector will be sucked dry.

Sweet jorline. I think I know what you meant. But I reject government jobs because the jobs that government creates take your/mine/ours. No government job created on that can be permanant. This government is destroying anything permanant. It's destroying us. 600,000 jobs created by the PBO is a lie.

Yea, something is strange.

"Why Mr. Espada and Mr. Monserrate suddenly defected on Monday afternoon was not immediately clear. Both men are under investigation by the authorities. The state attorney general’s office is investigating a health care agency, Soundview HealthCare Network, that Mr. Espada ran until recently. And Mr. Monserrate, who was indicted on felony assault charges in March stemming from an attack on his companion, would automatically be thrown out of office if convicted."

609 Cato the Elder  Mon, Jun 8, 2009 3:06:28pm

The primitivity of some practitioners of "religion" never ceases to amaze.

We Romans practiced imprecatory prayer too. There are many examples that have survived, scratched on lead tablets and the like.

Here's a sample:

Spirits of the underworld, I consecrate and hand over to you, if you have any power [sic!], Ticene of Carisius. Whatever she does, may it all turn out wrong. Spirits of the netherworld, I consecrate to you her limbs, her complexion, her figure, her head, her hair, her shadow, her brain, her forehead, her eyebrows, her mouth, her nose, her chin, her cheeks, her lips, her speech, her breath, her neck, her liver, her shoulders, her heart, her lungs, her intestines, her stomach, her arms, her fingers, her hands, her navel, her entrails, her thighs, her knees, her calves, her heels, her soles, her toes. Spirits of the netherworld, if I see her wasting away, I swear that I will be delighted to offer a sacrifice to you every year.

This is the "god" that Drake prays to.

In some tribes it is enough for the local shaman to curse a man and he will go away and die.

The hamsa, an amulet worn to ward off the Evil Eye, is common throughout the Middle East, to both Jews and Muslims.

A lot of what passes for Christianity is nothing but paganism with a biblical veneer. That's because a lot of what is in the Bible is patently pagan in nature.

At least when the pagans do it they know what they're doing and don't shove it in the shoes of the Creator of the Universe.

Imps and afrits upon Drake and his make.

Not necessarily. In Ohio, a handicapped driver only gets the plate if they're willing to pay extra for it every year, just like a "vanity" plate. For this reason, most handicapped drivers in OH just have the placard. Under OH law, the only handicapped drivers who are required to have the plate vs. the placard are those whose handicap requires a specially modified vehicle (hand controls, wheelchair lift, etc.). And yes, they have to pay extra for the plate.

Yes, this is technically a violation of Federal law, but as long as the state BMV doesn't charge extra for the placard, they can charge more for the plate (calling it a "processing" or "material" fee, etc.), and get away with it.

/Friend of mine is 72, limited mobility, has the placard, refuses to pay extra for the plate- and I don't blame her.

Cato's favorite imprecatory poem, by the glorious James Stephens, he of the "Crock of Gold"!

A glass of beer

The lanky hank of a she in the inn over there
Nearly killed me for asking the loan of a glass of beer:
May the devil grip the whey-faced slut by the hair,
And beat bad manners out of her skin for a year.

That parboiled imp, with the hardest jaw you will see
On virtue's path, and a voice that would rasp the dead,
Came roaring and raging the minute she looked at me,
Threw me out of the house on the back of my head!

If I asked her master he'd give me a cask a day;
But she, with the beer at hand, not a gill would arrange!
May she marry a ghost and bear him a kitten, and may
The High King of Glory permit her to get the mange.

re: #50 zombie

Sad part? Get with the program! That's the media's main strategy! Been in place for some time -- to marginalize the Right after Obama wins by relentlessly highlighting the worse of the extreme right as the representatives of conservatism. And it's a plan that's working well. Why do you think that Pat Buchanan is always a pundit on TV? Why does Huckabee have his own show? Why is Ron Paul and his followers getting so much press?

Not because the media LIKES these people. The media is promoting them BECAUSE those figures are so wacko-extreme that they discredit the rest of us.

Many many people are falling for this scheme. Unfortunately.

So under your crackpot theory Fox News is part of the left-wing media, and as such is participating in this scheme to try to make the Right look bad by, in their case, giving Huckabee his own show. So the Fox News moguls who plan what shows go on the network gave Huckabee his show with the the thought, "how can we help the Democratic Party"--that was the motivation of Fox News. Come on, give me a break.

Pure Crazy Evil

Autopsy: Newborn's mother died from 'homicidal violence'

Korena Roberts, 28, is charged with murder in Snively's death. She was scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.

Medics received a call Friday from Roberts' Washington County, Oregon, home of a newborn in distress, authorities said. When they arrived, they found Roberts' boyfriend trying to revive the baby boy. Roberts told deputies the baby was hers, according to the county sheriff's office.

Roberts and the baby were taken to a hospital after medics noticed a lot of blood at the home, officials said.

"Doctors at the hospital could not revive the baby," said sheriff's Sgt. David Thompson. "They also discovered that Ms. Roberts had not delivered the baby at any time in the recent past."

Deputies returned to the home and found Snively's body in a crawl space beneath the kitchen. Police said she had been pregnant; authorities determined she was the baby's mother.

re: #653 Mr. Sandman

In a later post you imply that the "Media" try to promote these other right-wingers to try to make the Right look bad, i.e., kooky and extreme, but "trash" Palin because they are "afraid" of her. But the truth is Palin needs no assistance to "look" bad, as she is on the same level of kookiness as these others, so your theory doesn't hold water in that respect either.

Believe what you will.

Yes, I think Fox in all its branches is and has been taken over by left-wingers behind the scenes. All one has to do is closely follow the plots of "24" over the last three seasons to see the change, up until this last season when a Blackwater/Halliburton-type corporation was the main villain, whereas innocent Muslims and lefties were framed by the bad guys, only to be later vindicated -- and then when Jack is on his death bed, he calls in a Muslim imam to confess his sins to. Etc. etc. etc. along down the line.

This is only one anecdotal example, but the only way to gather evidence in a situation like this is to accrue example after example, since obviously no program director or honcho at Fox is going to "confess" live on TV that they've taken a huge left turn ideologically, as an organization.

You may think I'm a crackpot, but I know people in the TV industry and I follow leftist "philosophers" and stuff like this --giving free publicity to the worst aspect of your opponents' camp -- is exactly what they're all about these days.

Well Holder's DOJ is wrong and in contravention of its constitutional duty. If the DOJ doesn't uphold the integrity of elections then everything else is a moot point.

Yes and no. There apparently were legitimate problems with the system that flagged many citizens, who then had a hell of a time getting their registration straightened out. If the system was any good, it would catch many more non-citizens and very few citizens.

What pisses me off is that 1) it was thrown out on racial grounds, when there was absolutely no racist intent, and 2) why in hell is Georgia still subject to the Voting Rights Act, which requires the state to submit even the tiniest change in voting procedure (e.g. moving a precinct across the street) to DOJ scrutiny?

I agree, but you must admit that public decency standards have loosened (and not for the better imho) on the past decade, just as it did bewteen 1989 and 1999, and just as it did between 1979 and 1989.

You're right, of course.

The kind of lying, self-serving, blatant and blasphemous manipulation that passes for corporate ethics these days makes the old Madison Avenue of my youth look like a paradise of honesty and truth-in-advertising.

In my town there's a trial going on of bankers and mortgage brokers who deliberately sold sub-prime mortgages with balloon payments and interest rates that expanded like umbrellas to people whose credit ratings would have qualified them for the best prime mortgages on the books.

At least a few of these vultures are on trial. The rest of it is being swept under the carpet as "just business".

Oh, but - I'm sorry - you were talking about sexual mores, weren't you? My bad.

(Try not to notice that those ho-rider jeans and the filthy stuff on teevee - Fox springs to mind - are being sold by some of the same people who turn around and spout about "family values" when it's time to get their stooges elected.)

It doesn't sound so far fetched actually. One of the weaknesses of the conservative/Republican side of the political aisle is that they've historically always shot themselves in the foot and been stupid and naive as to the power of the left. We would do well to read The Prince and get wise to political tactics of the left.

For Machiavelli, politics was about one and only one thing: getting and keeping power or authority. Everything else—religion, morality, etc—that people associate with politics has nothing to do with this fundamental aspect of politics—unless being moral helps one get and keep power. The only skill that counts in getting and maintaining power is calculation; the successful politician knows what to do or what to say for every situation.

#695 katemaclaren

Oh dear. I'm speechless. And I don't mean that sarcastically. Since you pointed this out, Zombie, I am going to take a closer look--this sounds very tactically Alinsky-like, too.

Oh and yes, we all know that Republicans never get into politics for power, and don't use dirty political tactics to hold onto power. They are motivated by a pure desire to help others--we all know how much compassion they have.

CONTENT// SNIPPET

he states clearly that he's talking about the ACLU's penchant for jumping inot every cause eliminating any mention of 'religion' in America.

When he's talking about our fall into "paganism" he's referring to things that were public taboo just a decade or so ago
Wearing pants so low underwear AND ass cracks are seen
14 year old gilrs dressed as hookers in the mall dry humping their boyfreinds
language on prime time free TV shows that weren't even allowed on pay per view ones 20 years ago

I'm not saying I'm in agreement with him, I just undertsand what his point is

Was going to respond but got a phone call from the folks.

He speaks specifically about the ACLU as representing paganism and as cause for the moral ills of America. That and there tendency to advocate "the removal of God from America." It then becomes a matter of those action being the cause of a moral decline. I find that difficult acknowledge considering that before the ACLU and the apparent decline in public decency standards we had Jim Crow Laws, lynchings, the inability for women and blacks to vote and other standards that pale in comparison to what we face today.

If we acknowledge the breakdown of moral standards why limit the blame to on group or ideology? As a society all work together to create either good or bad. Gingrich is focusing the blame on so called paganism but there is no doubt it includes atheists, agnostics and secularism. The tendency for individuals or groups is always to "blame the others." Does Wiley Drake's comments as indicated in this article represent a certain group? What about the recent shooting of William Lane by a Muslim convert or the shooting of George Tiller by an apparent Christian?

Are these not signs of a moral breakdown and why then does their associations not become a factor and instead people like Gingrich choose to focus on paganism or as many pundits like to blame, secular humanists or progressives. Once again this is another example of the blame game which fails to see the responsibility that lies within our own selves and our own associations.

As for casting himself as a spokesman for morality I also put that in the context of his extramarital affair with Callista Bisek. I can only wonder if "paganism" played a role.

Well, I do know that Newt is about as poor a paragon for family values as one could choose.

When he was a young man attending college, he married his much older college professor. Nothing wrong with that.

But when he himself got older and began teaching at a college, he divorced his much older wife, and married a much younger student of his.

And he had the divorce papers delivered to her in the hospital where she was undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Morally speaking, the man is pond scum.

Understood on the disclaimer.

A little background on Dr. Paul McHugh. He wrote a piece which I found referenced at the Discovery Institute, Teaching Darwin Why we're still fighting about biology textbook. Here's an excerpt which is a summary of his piece:

Evolutionary biology awaits its Newton. And until such a thinker emerges--to provide a fuller conception of the history of life and especially the forces at play that explain how things happened as they did--those who would expel all challenges to the Darwinian narrative from the high school classroom are false to their mission of teaching the scientific method.

In other words, "teach the controversy." A psychiatrist delving into evolutionary science is not unlike a dentist undertaking the same task who goes by the name of Don McLeroy. I take his assessment on Tiller's records to be based on cursory evidence and perhaps tinged with bias.

McHugh's Teaching Darwin Why we're still fighting about biology textbook is mentioned in:

In the UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS
for the ELEVENTH CIRCUIT

COBB COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT, COBB COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION, JOSEPH REDDEN, SUPERINTENDENT,

From Page 20:

Today, as a distinguished professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine recently pointed out (commenting on this case), “any questioning of the Darwinian narrative, no matter how sympathetic, is shouted down.” Paul McHugh, Teaching Darwin: Why We’re Still Fighting About Biology Textbooks, The Weekly Standard p. 25 (Mar. 28, 2005). But, as he quite rightly says, “both legal mandates – no Darwin yesterday, nothing but Darwin today – look less like science than exercises in thought control.” Id. At 23.

Also mentioned at Panda's Thumb.

The conservative magazine The Weekly Standard, apparently not wanting to allow Commentary to have all the fun, has waded into the anti-evolution biz by publishing this miserable article by Paul McHugh. It is the usual melange of literary arrogance coupled with scientific ignorance. It does, however, provide a useful opportunity to review the various litmus tests you can apply to distinguish between serious commentators on the one hand, and dishonest hacks on the other.

Make a reference to thought control.
Bring up Inherit the Wind.
Imply that evolution is about ideology and not science.
Pretend that evolution has made no progress since Darwin.
Use quotations from scientists misleadingly and without indicating their source.
Bring up Piltdown Man.

Now I remember that cretin, Jack Cashill. Sure enough he has this on his front page:

Sebelius Must Share Blame For Tiller Murder

On Sunday morning, regrettably, a kind of crude frontier justice caught up with late abortionist George Tiller. He was shot and killed in the foyer of his Wichita church.

For the left, Scott Roeder, the accused killer, had alchemized the unholy dross of a corrupt late term abortionist into martyr’s gold...

The jurors, to be sure, did not learn any of this. A Tiller conviction would not have looked good on the record of our new Secretary of Health and Human Services.

As John F. Kennedy once said, “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”

In the Tiller case, Sebelius was chief among the “those.”
