Bizarre Crime Story of the Day

The latest outbreak of bad craziness involves three mayors and five rabbis, in a huge corruption and money laundering ring: Mayors of Hoboken, Secaucus, Five Rabbis Arrested.

July 23 (Bloomberg) — The mayors of Hoboken, Ridgefield and Secaucus, New Jersey, and five rabbis were among 44 people charged by the U.S. with public corruption and money laundering.

Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, 32, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, 64, and Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez, 42, all Democrats; Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega Jr., 59; State Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt, 44, a Republican from Ocean Township; and Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith, a Jersey City Democrat, were charged today in an FBI complaint. All except Smith appeared in U.S. court in Newark, New Jersey.

The corruption probe, based in Hudson County, netted many public officials accused of pledging assistance for bribes. A cooperating witness in that probe also infiltrated a “pre- existing money laundering network” that moved “at least tens of millions of dollars through charitable, non-profit entities controlled by rabbis in New York and New Jersey,” according to a release by acting U.S. Attorney Ralph Marra.

“The fact that we arrested a number of rabbis this morning does not make this a religiously motivated investigation,” Weysan Dun, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s office in Newark, said at a news conference. “It is not a politically motivated investigation. It is about crime, corruption, arrogance and a shocking betrayal of public trust.”

As do I. But some good may come of this: New Jersey has a gubernatorial election in November. Hopefully this slimes Corzine and the Dems and enables the GOP to make inroads in the state. The addition of Northern, more moderate, officials into our party would give leverage against our crazies.

We have been a besieged minority for so long that any change from (D) to (R) in NJ or NY would be a great breath of fresh air. But in all things political, you need the legislature. Without which the best intentioned governor is hapless.

New Jersey Pine Barrens.

The Pine Barrens, also known as the Pinelands, is a heavily forested area covering 1.1 million acres (4,500 km²) of coastal plain across southern New Jersey. The name "pine barrens" refers to the area's sandy, acidic, nutrient-poor soil, to which the crops originally imported by European settlers didn't take well. However, these uncommon conditions enable the Pine Barrens to support a unique and diverse spectrum of plant life, including orchids and carnivorous plants. The area is also notable for its populations of rare pygmy Pitch Pines and other plant species that depend on fire to reproduce (fire is very frequent in the Pine Barrens). The sand that composes much of the area's soil is referred to by the locals as sugar sand.

Despite its proximity to the metropolitan areas of Philadelphia and New York City, and the fact that the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway run directly through it, the Pine Barrens remains largely rural and undeveloped.

re: #16 freetoken

You mean you want RINOs in the GOP? You, sir, are no True Conservative™.

I am a conservative, but most people who live in my home state of Illinois are not and the same is true of New Jersey. To win in those states, we'll need people who are moderate when needs be on social issues (but will take firm stands when shoved by the left), but who will fight fiercely to reform those state's out of control governments. If that means being accused of supporting RINOs, so be it. Someone who is entirely conservative is unelectable in New Jersey right now, so we'll have to not let the perfect become the enemy of the possible.

When I travel throughout the third world I have a very simple test to determine the affluence of a neighborhood.

I observe the landscaping.

Any community that has the time, pride and resources to landscape their property assures a certain prosperity and security.

New Jersey has hundreds of square miles of landscapes towns. Its a wonderful thing.

Two of the many politicians arrested today were actually GOPers, but you wouldn't know it from much of the coverage. If you followed the progression from this morning, you'd see that they initially only identified Van Pelt as a GOPer, ignoring the party affiliation for everyone else - even though it was overwhelming Democrat (mayors of Hoboken, Secaucus, multiple Jersey City officials, etc.)

With Obama care there will be no more selling of organs by corrupt mayors and clergy. This is bad health policy. All transactions will be conducted using government sold organ credits. Al Gore is setting up a company to sell them as we speak. This way, like cap and trade all corruption is centralized at the federal level.

155 3 wood  Thu, Jul 23, 2009 7:33:43pm

Good evening. The market was up over 2% today based on, well, some news that was less than awful. I talked about this a few months ago, that soon we would start running into months that look good compared to a year ago simply cause the economy started imploding about a year ago. If the employment numbers do not improve significantly within the next few months I look for a strong correction in the market.

Look for some profit taking tomorrow. I think this market is over bought, and some money will get taken off the table pretty quickly.

One thing to keep an eye on. The Fed's have been paying banks interest on their reserves. In other words, banks have been making a risk free return by NOT loaning out money. Then the Fed's scratch their heads and wonder why the banks are not loaning much money.

This recent "recovery" will be very short lived if that situation continues for long. Yes, the banks profit numbers look good, even a banker can make a profit by getting paid to not loan out money. But the lack of capital availability in the system will soon impact the economy very negatively.

So get used to Obama explaining to you ("let me make this perfectly clear")
why 10% unemployment is a good thing.

Afghanistan blossoms like the garden of democracy it was in ... what year was that again?

Does anybody speak Obama? I don't quite know what that means. Is he suggesting the image of the United States defeating the WWII-era Japanese (the same Japanese that perpetrated the Bataan Death March, the Rape of Nanking, and caught infants on the tips of bayonets) is a negative one?

Is this a joke?

My dad was on Iwo Jima. This bothers me.

I don't think that's what he meant. I think he's trying to imply that the end of this war will NOT look like the end of WW2 ... no neat formal treaty, etc. I am ignoring the historical goof vis-a-vis Hirohito.

I had the satisfaction of saying , "What a rip!" to him as I handed him the check. The family was shocked at my lack of respect.

Was that for a burial or dedication? Usually those things are agreed upon in advance or, at least, that's been my experience. Indeed, the amounts were only suggestions given by the funeral home though it was left up to us as to the actual honorarium.

Public support in Europe for troops in Afghanistan has always been weak that's nothing new. Just like when Bush started the surge in Iraq the death toll went up. The MSM and LLL focused on the the death toll and waning public support to try to paint it as a loss. Fox news is doing the same thing now. It's no different. They want Obama failure at any cost.
What's the point of them smearing our captured soldier in Afghanistan? Is it any better than the slander of our troops in Iraq from Murtha and the LLL?

The CST of British Jewry has released it's Report on Antisemitic Discourse in 2008 in the UK:

CST Antisemitic Discourse Report 2008

Often, the antisemitic discourse covered in this report reveals unthinking stereotypes and prejudice, rather than something more considered. Lazy journalism can lead to what David Hirsh called “ready-made ways of thinking about Jews”. Some of the UK media coverage of the American presidential election, which is included in the report, falls into this category. Other examples in the report, such as Press TV’s promotion of Holocaust Denial, are more sinister; still others, such as Alan Hart claiming that Jews live in communities so that they can form voting blocs (rather than, for example, wanting to live within walking distance of their synagogue), are bizarre. Often, it is only by revisiting what antisemites used to say openly – such as in the 1960s British Nazi poster at the bottom of this post – that the antisemitic resonance of contemporary discourse can be fully understood...

'Imbecilic' French Army Drill Sparks Giant Wildfire

The fire erupted after troops from the 1st Foreign Legion Regiment used tracer rounds, which contain an incendiary substance to make them visible in flight, during a practice session at their base.

The fire, started at a camp in Carpiagne, was the worst to hit southern France in three years. Marseille's mayor and senator Jean-Claude Gaudin demanded that the military help out with the clean-up operation.

"We did the best we can but, when you're faced with this kind of incredible stupidity, you need to say so with a certain force," he added.

Clinton Holds Out Hope for North Korean Talks as Nations Trade Insults

North Korean representatives say the so-called six-party talks are "over" and "dead," and reject as "nonsense" the United States' plan to offer the country new incentives.

North Korea's foreign ministry fired back, calling Clinton a "funny lady" who sometimes "looks like a primary schoolgirl and sometimes a pensioner going shopping." The ministry was quoted as calling her remarks "vulgar" and saying "she is by no means intelligent."

First weapon I ever fired was an M60 machine gun firing tracers into a hillside at Camp San Luis Obispo when I was a noobie cadet in Cal Poly. I was "first in line" for the M60 so I was the first to send rounds down range that day.

And guess what - I set the hill on fire. We managed to put it out and then the NCOs pulled the tracer rounds and we went "back to work".

Point is, I can see how it could happen.

Messiah meets paradox of unintended consequences:

JPMorgan Said to Increase Some Banker Salaries Starting in 2010

July 23 (Bloomberg) -- JPMorgan Chase & Co., the second- largest U.S. bank by assets, will increase salaries for investment bankers who earn half or more of their total compensation in year-end bonuses, a person familiar with the firm said.

The plan, unveiled today at a meeting with investment bank co-heads Steven Black and William Winters, will be implemented in 2010 and details will be announced closer to the end of this year, the person said, declining to be identified because pay matters are confidential. The salary increase doesn’t change total pay.

The move allows JPMorgan to keep pace with rivals that have shifted pay to salaries amid restrictions on bonuses, and makes its compensation costs more predictable. Morgan Stanley and UBS AG have announced salary increases for certain employees. Morgan Stanley said in May it will increase base pay for some

executives, while UBS increased banker salaries by 50 percent.

In other words, cause bonuses are such a hot button issue, they have adjusted the salaries up. So Obama, due to your grandstanding, this bank has increased their ongoing operating costs as a result.

Good one.

re: #237 Killgore Trout

KosKidz have a video report that pretty much sums it up. This has been developing over the past few days.

OK. I watched the complete piece. I also researched and found the original (unedited) pieces before Ms. Maddow finished cutting and splicing.

Here are my thoughts (and how they relate to Fox news, which is what this discussion is all about).

1) Ralph Peters was a guest on Fox. Ralph Peters does not host a show, or anchor.

2) Ralph Peters (imo) jumped the gun. Having said that, he purports to have a good set of ears on the ground and hearing stuff that hasn't made it out yet. I still think he spoke too soon.

3) Ralph Peters qualifies his statements, but that wouldn't be known from the Kos piece because that has been masterfully edited out.

4) Of the two Fox source pieces, both Julie Banderas and Bill O'Reilly challenged Ralph Peters on multiple occasions.

By the way, this is one of the sections that Maddow edited. The erased piece is in bold:

"I want to be clear. If, when the facts are in, we find out that through some convoluted chain of events, he really was captured by the Taliban, I’m with him. But, if he walked away from his post and his buddies in wartime, I don’t care how hard it sounds, as far as I’m concerned, the Taliban can save us a lot of legal hassles and legal bills.

Your statements about Fox (at least based on this example) appear to me to be exaggerated, sensational, and based on incomplete analysis of the actual source content (if the KosKids link is your main reference).

He did something stupid, no doubt. Does the deckhand on an aircraft carriers deserve what he gets if he fucks up and get sucks into an aircraft engine? Are you going to cheer when a humvee driver forgets his training and gets paralyzed by driving too close to an easily identified EID? How about a soldier how's ordered to move and stays put? Does he deserve to be shot in the spine?
I'd guess that many, if not most, military casualties are caused by people who made poor choices, ignored orders or were careless or stupid. To Cheer on this young man's death for fucking up is immoral. He may very well die a horrific death for his mistake. I have little doubt that the Taliban will show him those clips from Fox News labeling him as a traitor who deserves to die. They couldn't break his morale any better than Fox News if they tried.

I'm not at all surprised by the NJ pols. The dems in that state are absolutely the most corrupt going. Slightly less corrupt, but only slightly are the NJ republicans. As this thing takes more shape, it is turning out to be less bizarre, though no less chilling and widespread. Turns out that the cooperating witness is supposedly Solomon Dwek. In turning state's evidence, he reduced the time he'll have to serve for what he was arrested for a few years back. A member of the Syrian Jewish community in Deal, and real estate developer, he want after those people who he knew best. Hence the rabbis (his own father is THE rabbi for the Syrian community in Deal) and shady politicians.

The good part about the rabbis and the organ peddling is that it turns a dog-bites-man yawner ("Fifty crooked Democrats - and a GOP beard or two - in New Jersey? Where do they think they are, Chicago?") into something with enough of a tabloid edge to keep it in the press a while.

318 herman92  Fri, Jul 24, 2009 8:20:42am

I live in Hoboken, its a great town, with awesome views of the Hudson River & NYC and really amazing parks. Great restaurants, pubs and very interesting people. Its arguably one the best towns and places to live in New Jersey. (schools need some work) Unfortunately the town class divide "this is very simplified, but" runs between along locals and more affluent people who mostly work in NY. IN short, Cammarano got elected by promising the locals that they will keep their "town & government jobs" which means higher taxes to a largely uninvolved more transitional urban professionals. the dynamic is changing , slowly but surely, as more families are staying and not moving to the "burbs." Cammarano bribes the the locals for their votes and apparently that mentality is conducive to accepting bribes back. its a shame, a real shame. Cammarano only won by about 200 votes, so hopefully the tide is turning. All the town employees rallied around the guy, and to their credit, they are a very effective voting block. Some would call it a machine. The Dems are very strong in this area, Republicans don't have a fighting chance. one party dominance or systems are inherently vulnerable to corruption, at any level.

As with any such terrible chilul hashem, bringing the Jewish community and faith into disrepute, this story really hurts. I don't understand how anyone let alone one of the community I love can be so callous. When someone has dodged taxes or something we might feel a little compassion, but people who could take kidneys at gunpoint by way of a huge laundering scam - Jews? And they had to do this through Israel? Please may the frum communities of New York, London, Israel and around the world take note and campaign against blase corruption and any sense of aloofness. Oy gevalt.
