The fire's maximum borders are roughly 25 miles from west to east and 18 miles north to south, covering the entire length of Angeles National Forest from Highway 14 to Altadena. That's roughly equivalent to an area from downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach and from Santa Monica to El Monte.

Last year's fire was to the west mainly to the west of this one. If you check the interactive map, it was just north of the 210 and between the 210 / 14. The mobile home park that was wiped out was just off the 210 about 2 miles from the 210 / 5 junction at the base of the Newhall Pass.

Some info about fire and the San Gabriel Mts. plant life:
Fire is the primary regenerative force in the chaparral plant habitat. In fact, many plant species require fire to reproduce. Historically, the fire cycle in the mountain ranges of Southern California has been approximately 40-60 years. However, with increased urbanization, human ignitions have shortened this cycle to 30-40 years. As a result, particularly in the San Gabriel foothills, chaparral shrubs are less able to re-colonize amidst frequent seedling-killing fires and must also face tough competition from non-native grasses. This has led to a habitat conversion from shrubs to grasses.

Pretty much all of the planned developments have wet zones built into their plans on the outer periphery - but the more isolated homes and older developments have to depend on clearing brush themselves in order to create a barrier. While some do, many do not - and while LA County Fire tries the best they can to inspect, some areas don't get done.
What is fortunate with this fire is that the winds are very calm - no Santa Ana conditions to drive the fire as normally happens in late Sept / early Oct fires.

Hong Kong Broker Pulling A "Borat" On Sarah Palin
Hopefully Sarah Palin realizes she's been invited to Hong Kong as a practical joke.
CLSA, the Asia-focused broker who invited Mrs. Palin as keynote speaker for an Asian investment conference, is well known for their cheeky takes on investment research.
In the past, they've polled Asian fortune tellers for index targets, hired anime cartoonists to draw Japanese research, and generally love to push the boundaries between entertainment and analysis. They are a real research firm, it's just that they love to sprinkle in some hilarity every now and then as a smart marketing gimmick.
Sarah Palin is this year's big laugh for them.
I suppose it could be a joke. I can't imagine that she's actually have anything interesting to say about international finance. Maybe they're just doing it for the publicity.

The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.
Florida GOP responds...
Greer Condemns Obama's Attempt to Indoctrinate Students
Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today released the following statement condemning President Obama's use of taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America's children to his socialist agenda.
"As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama's socialist ideology. The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the President justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other President, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power.
Read the whole thing. It's hilarious.

... the Democrats have no problem going against the majority of American people and usurping the rights of parents by sending Pied Piper Obama into the American classroom.
The Democrats have clearly lost the battle to maintain control of the message this summer, so now that school is back in session, President Obama has turned to American's children to spread his liberal lies, indoctrinating American's youngest children before they have a chance to decide for themselves."

Hey, there is some talk about using water balloons.
Most important, said Cleary, the planes would drop the water bombs accurately from high above the flames instead of precariously skimming the smoldering hills, the way air tankers do now.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, there were 20 aerial firefighting accidents and 13 fatalities between 2006 and 1996. Cleary said it is easy to convince the pilots who fly these missions that there’s a better way.
The system is ready to be tested on a real fire on private land, Goddard said. The government requires extensive testing before new firefighting technology can be used on federal land.
The Forest Service has not yet run the numbers to see if buying thousands of disposable box-and-balloon kits at an initial price of $300 each can save enough money on equipment, manpower and other costs to make the technology worthwhile.
“It costs several millions of dollars to install a tank on an aircraft, and that lasts at least 15 years,” said Carl Bambarger, an expert in aerial firefighting with the Forest Service’s Technology and Development Center in San Dimas.

Hong Kong Broker Pulling A "Borat" On Sarah Palin
I suppose it could be a joke. I can't imagine that she's actually have anything interesting to say about international finance. Maybe they're just doing it for the publicity.
It wouldn't be the first time Palin got punk'd and didnt know it. Remember when the Canadian radio show pretended to be Sarkozy and she bought it?
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]
"I just love killing those animals. Mmm, mmm, take away life, that is so fun," the fake Sarkozy says.
He proposes they go hunting together by helicopter, something he says he has never done.
"Well, I think we could have a lot of fun together while we're getting work done," Palin counters. "We can kill two birds with one stone that way."
The comedian jokes that they shouldn't bring Cheney along on the hunt, referring to the 2006 incident in which the vice-president shot and injured a friend while hunting quail.
"I'll be a careful shot," responds Palin.
Playing off the governor's much-mocked comment in an early television interview that she had insights into foreign policy because "you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska," the caller tells her: "You know we have a lot in common also, because ... from my house I can see Belgium."
She replies: "Well, see, we're right next door to different countries that we all need to be working with, yes."
What an embarrassment.
I have never understood how her handlers, or the McCain campaign, let that call through.

"While I support educating our children to respect both the office of the American President and the value of community service, I do not support using our children as tools to spread liberal propaganda. The address scheduled for September 8, 2009, does not allow for healthy debate on the President's agenda, but rather obligates the youngest children in our public school system to agree with our President's initiatives or be ostracized by their teachers and classmates.

A few minutes ago an older camera system was posted as part of an estate sale (and obviously the child selling off their parent's belongings didn't know the true value of the gear - it was underpriced by about 40%.)
Long story short - within the time it took me to write a message to the seller... the auction was sold ("buy it now.")

I see the main objection is to this line in the advance 'study guide':
Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.

I read through some of the lesson plan to go along with Obama's speech this morning. A couple of things bugged me (and this is speaking as someone who has trained and observed student teachers and written elementary school curricula).
1) I don't recall ever in school having heard a speech from a president. Maybe it happened, but recalling the folks who were in the White House at some point during my school career (JBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan) I just don't remember it ever happening. This strikes me as unprecedented and thus potentially a point of concern.
2) The questions the teachers were supposed to ask were intended to have the result of kids going home from school and asking the parents about specific policies. The goal would seem to be to play on the kids' emotions and thus the parent's emotions -- to force the latter into supporting, at least in the presence of the kids -- policies they might not otherwise agree with. That sort of emotional manipulation of children and parents is par for the course for Bill Ahrers and much of the far left educational elite. (Cf. Sandra Stotsky's work)

Absolutely. It's no different than the push (Thanks to Jonah Goldberg, the Pantload) to call liberal fascists or totalitarian.
Similarly, listen to Glnn Bk. He'll say Obama is a 'socialist communist Marxist' .
It's basically about stringing together words intended to frighten people, with no regard for the meanings of those words.
Best review of Goldberg ever: "Liberal Fascism: Two Words Next to Each Other."
I disagree on Goldberg's book -- I think he makes a very good case concerning the relationship between the American left in the 1920s and fascism. It's more than just two words.
He has, however, said that in retrospect he didn't like the subtitle. And the dust cover image wasn't his first choice either, but the publisher almost always wins on those fights.

Robert Reich: Why the deficit hysteria? I only wish we'd borrow more
'At every stage in the growth of the debt it has been seriously asserted by wise men that bankruptcy and ruin were at hand. Yet still the debt went on growing, and still bankruptcy and ruin were as remote as ever." So wrote Lord Thomas Macaulay, the great 19th-century British historian. He was alluding to the English public debt, but he might as well have been referring to the United States in the 21st century.
Last week the White House announced that deficits over the next 10 years are likely to be worse than it had thought – and, as expected, the same old group of deficit hysterics went ballistic. "A 10-year deficit of $9tn is $30,000 for each man, woman and child in the United States!" Kabaam. "Public debt will total a whopping $17.5tn by 2019 – three-quarters of the nation's entire economy!" Kaboom. "The number would send Reagan's stack of $1,000 bills into satellite orbit!" Zowee.

There may be legitimate social concerns about a President trying to influence political discourse by working through school systems.
Yet, as we saw in the Greer (FL GOP) message, the political whipping posts of school prayer, "traditional" marriage, and abortion are being offered as the counter-attack.
It is a sad statement about the opposition political party when they can't argue the political ethics of a proposal but have to instead turn to hot-button social issues to gain any support.

I've been intrigued by some of the more recent polling, and although the numbers are surprisingly starting to favor the GOP, I'm concluding that it's more because the public has a growing anti-incumbency attitude... a "More D's, more D's to get rid of, Fewer R's, fewer R's to complain about" kind of thing.

re: #239 Sharmuta
There is nothing liberal about fascism.
No there isn't -- and that's sort of the point of the book. American "liberals" are good-old-fashioned leftists and no friends of "liberty" in the way that nineteenth and early twentieth century "liberals" understood the concept.
One of the greatest myths of the twentieth century is that the fascists in France, Italy, and Spain were "right wing." They weren't -- the movements were outgrowths of far left anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist movements that emerged after the breakdown of the second International in the 1870s. American leftists, following directives from Russia in the early 1920s, went out of their way to create the image that Mussolini was a conservative. American "progressives" (who were trying to construct a form of socialism that would work in America") bought into the project.
Goldberg documents what happened very well; his sources are sound even if the overall package is more "journalistic" than historical.

I think it's authoritarian issues being confused for fascism.
Authoritarian: favoring complete obedience or subjection to authority as opposed to individual freedom: authoritarian principles; authoritarian attitudes.
2. of or pertaining to a governmental or political system, principle, or practice in which individual freedom is held as completely subordinate to the power or authority of the state, centered either in one person or a small group that is not constitutionally accountable to the people.
Authoritarian doesn't seem to be any friendlier a term when associated with liberalism.

Exactly. Why not just inform your kids that they are going to hear a speech which will attempt to influence them, and that after they hear it discuss it with them?
If a parent can't (in a general sense) explain to their kids why they think a certain argument is wrong, then how are the children going to learn to disagree with what they hear (in a socially acceptable manner)?
If the students only do that, at least it gets the parents and kids discussing something from school.

Note carefully -- students are supposed to identify things that need to be done by themselves and their parents; they are supposed to take on "projects" and they will be GRADED on those projects (note the "graph progress" part at the end.)

The letter-writer listed all the items shown in the bag that could potentially be composted if you really tried, and then excoriated the editors for including the ad.
Eventually the mag changed to "Organic Style" in which we were treated to the endless "Green" habits of dim anorexic starlets. Well at least you're honest, which I've never doubted. There is however a distinction between talking to an individual classroom, which I suspect every President has done, and the spectacle of addressing the whole nation's classrooms, with the attendant indirect but very real pressure of the teacher's as authority figures backing up the speech.

I have to say, that sounds like more of Jonah trying to cover his ass.
The book is a pile of revisionist crap.
Jonah's idea of research is to put up a post asking readers who have read herbert spencer to get in touch with him. When an actual scholar did get in touch, the Pantload got huffy and ignored it.
And as for the subtitle, I'm not surprised he regrets it. It was only the THIRD time he changed it! Here are the prior two:
The Totalitarian Temptation From Mussolini to Hillary Clinton
and then
The Totalitarian Temptation From Hegel to Whole Foods
Does this sound like a serious thinker to you?
Goldberg is crap, and his book is ten pounds of crap in a one pound book.

The best way to describe it is to do a google image search on 'blood moon', except it was the sun.
