The Door Opens - Update: The Door Closes

Open • Views: 1,747

The registration door swings open and the turnstiles turn, clicking and counting the hatchlings as they enter.

If you decide to take that momentous step and register, it’s not a bad idea to read all the rules and commit them to memory. The short version:

  • Don’t register with a proxy.
  • Don’t register with a throwaway email address.
  • Don’t register more than one account at a time from the same Internet connection.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be a troll.
  • Don’t be a sock puppet. Stinky Beaumont hates sock puppets. He will find you. You don’t want Stinky mad at you.
  • If you’re registering just to post a dramatic “goodbye cruel world” comment full of insults and drool, don’t waste your time. Nobody’s going to read it. It will be immediately deleted and your account will be blocked.
  • Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 11/19/09 8:19:33 pm:

The door of registration opportunity has slammed shut for the evening.

Play the Race Card? Jesse just opened a fresh deck

The Rev. Jesse Jackson on Wednesday night criticized Rep. Artur Davis (D-Ala.) for voting against the Democrats’ signature healthcare bill.

“We even have blacks voting against the healthcare bill from Alabama,” Jackson said at a reception Wednesday night. “You can’t vote against healthcare and call yourself a black man.”

Look for the Union label...

According to research firms, unions are woefully short of funds to pay their retirees’ anticipated insurance claims. Thus, under the House resolution, union leaders who have mismanaged these plans for their members could receive up to $10 billion in taxpayer-funded bailout money, innocuously referred to as a “reinsurance program.”

Unfortunately, this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Serious for 12.667 seconds (or however long it takes you to read this):

February 15, 2010, I am going to be in Tallahassee, Florida at the Regional Forum on Congenital Heart Defects, talking to parents about living with a CHD and how to raise a kid with a heart problem.

If you are in the area and your child has a heart defect, plan to come! The event is free but they want you to register (probably to get a good count for the picnic).

Werewolves can be killed with silver bullets. Thus the solution is simple: Get Mandy some silver .50AE ammo for her Desert Eagle, and austin_blue some silver 7.62x51mm ammo for his HK-91. The werewolves won't stand a chance.

From Wikipedia, Third World

The term Third World arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned or neutral with either capitalism and NATO (which along with its allies represented the First World) or communism and the Soviet Union (which along with its allies represented the Second World). This definition provided a way of broadly categorizing the nations of the Earth into three groups based on social, political, and economic divisions.

I don't like John Conyers, but he does have a decent understanding of how the House works, so he's right about that vote. Of course, the good news about that is that the Dems are unlikely to be able to draft a bill that all of them can support, thus dooming the worst aspects of Obamacare to die on the Senate floor.

I remember a native New Yorker lady interviewed after 9/11~~ "Well, they never thought we were part of America before." : ( The bright lights attract the best and the brightest from all over our great nation, IMO. Being born there~doubly blessed!

Yeah, being made to feel that NYC wasn't really part of America was something that I hardly ever experienced from my fellow Americans, but nearly every single European and Canadian seem obliged to point out. In fairness, I did go through a phase in my youth where if I was asked my nationality, I would reply "New Yorker", but that silliness stopped after 9/11. (I still say it right after I reply "American though.) :-D

The true New Yorker isn't the native, however; it's the traveler who makes New York his adopted home and shakes the town upside down. Look at a list of great New Yorkers, and you will find that 90% of them never came here until they turned 18. Likewise, many famous Americans we normally never associate with the Big Apple were in fact born and raised there. Odd fact of life, but there you have it...

The legislature here is so corrupt, it simply ignores the will of the people even when issues, such as the income tax rate rollback, are voted on and approved by voters. They ignored the vote on income taxes, and just INCREASED the rate. There are several issues that they have simply decided we may not vote on, contrary to the state constitution. I'm sure the city will be glad to see you return! As for the "warnings", isn't it nice to be taken as a bad-ass who doesn't need them? I've been the near recipient of similar advice when I've traveled to other climes; once I said I was from the Big Apple, people would sum up like: "Well, then you know how to take care of yourself then, so that's all!"

Grew up thinking the natural state of of subway cars was to be layered in graffiti, and at least one car window per block was meant to be broken into every week; so yeah, Manhattan sure has changed since the 80's. Anybody who's not half-asleep will be totally ok here these days...

Bizaro news story of the day.

'Fat for cosmetics' murder suspects arrested in Peru

Four people have been arrested in Peru on suspicion of killing dozens of people in order to sell their fat and tissue for cosmetic uses in Europe.

The gang allegedly targeted people on remote roads, luring them with fake job offers before extracting their fat to sell it for $15,000 (£9,000) a litre.

Other suspected gang members, including two Italian nationals, remain at large.

Police said the gang could be behind the disappearances of up to 60 people in the region.

Yikes. Let's lighten this up.
How many remember the Hollywood Squares TV game show?
Some classics:

Q. Paul, what is a good reason for pounding meat?
A. Paul Lynde: Loneliness! (The audience laughed so long and so hard it took up almost 15
minutes of the show!)

Q. Do female frogs croak?
A. Paul Lynde: If you hold their little heads under water long enough.

Q. If you're going to make a parachute jump, at least how high should you be.
A. Charley Weaver: Three days of steady drinking should do it.

Q . True or False, a pea can last as long as 5,000 years.
A. George Gobel: Boy, it sure seems that way sometimes.

Q. You've been having trouble going to sleep. Are you probably a man or a woman?
A. Don Knotts: That's what's been keeping me awake.

Q. According to Cosmopolitan, if you meet a stranger at a party and you think that he is
attractive, is it okay to come out and ask him if he's married?
A. Rose Marie: No wait until morning.

Q. Which of your five senses tends to diminish as you get older?
A. Charley Weaver: My sense of decency..

Q. In Hawaiian, does it take more than three words to say 'I Love You'?
A. Vincent Price: No, you can say it with a pineapple and a twenty..

Q. What are 'Do It,' 'I Can Help,' and 'I Can't Get Enough'?
A. George Gobel: I don't know, but it's coming from the next apartment.

Q. As you grow older, do you tend to gesture more or less with your hands while talking?
A. Rose Marie: You ask me one more growing old question Peter, and I'll give you a gesture you'll never forget.

Q. Paul, why do Hell's Angels wear leather?
A. Paul Lynde: Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.

Q. Charley, you've just decided to grow strawberries. Are you going to get any during the first year?
A. Charley Weaver: Of course not, I'm too busy growing
strawberries.

Q. In bowling, what's a perfect score?
A. Rose Marie: Ralph, the pin boy.

Q. It is considered in bad taste to discuss two subjects at nudist camps. One is politics,
what is the other?
A. Paul Lynde: Tape measures.

Q. During a tornado, are you safer in the bedroom or in the closet?
A. Rose Marie: Unfortunately Peter, I'm always safe in the
bedroom.

Q. Can boys join the Camp Fire Girls?
A. Marty Allen: Only after lights out.

Q. When you pat a dog on its head he will wag his tail. What will a goose do?
A. Paul Lynde: Make him bark?

Q. If you were pregnant for two years, what would you give birth to?
A. Paul Lynde: Whatever it is, it would never be afraid of the dark.

Q. According to Ann Landers, is there anything wrong with getting into the habit of kissing
a lot of people?
A. Charley Weaver: It got me out of the army.

Q. It is the most abused and neglected part of your body, what is it?
A. Paul Lynde: Mine may be abused, but it certainly isn't neglected.

Q.Back in the old days, when Great Grandpa put horseradish on his head, what was he trying
to do?
A. George Gobel: Get it in his mouth.

Q.Who stays pregnant for a longer period of time, your wife or your elephant?
A. Paul Lynde: Who told you about my elephant?

Q.When a couple have a baby, who is responsible for its sex?
A. Charley Weaver: I'll lend him the car, the rest is up to
him

Q. Jackie Gleason recently revealed that he firmly believes in them and has actually seen
them on at least two occasions. What are they?
A. Charley Weaver: His feet.

Q. According to Ann Landers, what are two things you should never do in bed?
A. Paul Lynde: Point and laugh

He's not ever going to get a pass from me again. I care too much about most of the people here to let him get away with anything again.

If you or anyone else wants to take the high road, more power to you, but someone has to put their foot down and not cut him any more slack.

I don't feel that way at all. Early on, I was called every name in the book simply because I was a leftie, but I accepted the fact that my politics provoked some to anger. Everyone on that thread had strong opinions about their side of the argument and said some things better left unsaid, but I get the emotions.
Both sides feel their argument is the only patriotic one, both had solid points, and both lost their tempers.

I'm a little dubious, actually. I can't quite think what human fat would do, cosmetically, that tallow wouldn't.

Unless people are willing to pay for the sick thrill, I can't imagine what possible use this stuff has.

One article said "to an Italian cosmetics company" but it seems unproven yet. The BBC article said, "Some of the suspects were carrying bottles of fat when arrested." Now that's strange. Maybe it's for an underground market. Lots of strange things going on around the world like this and the Russian kebab story from last week.

Unbelievable timing on his comebacks. Probably the greatest game show celebrity-guest of all time. Not that that's an elite club, but he still did what he did better than anyone else.

No to burst anyones bubble here... but you know that most of the humorous questions were run past the guests ahead of time. The funny answers weren't, but they were given the opportunity to come up with snappy answers way before a show taped.

Fair enough, Walter. Your position is entirely reasonable. I'm going to cut him some slack still, if only because I've been an ass myself at times. But I won't be bothered if you do not do so. The way he attacked you last night caused him to forfeit any right to niceness from you.

Good evening, lizards. I've been listening to books that are in the public domain at librivox.org for the last few weeks and it's been a pretty awesome experience. If you don't have a lot of time to dedicate to an entire novel you can listen to a short story or poems. One of my most enjoyable has been The Crawling Chaos by H. P. Lovecraft. I've never been high on opium, but this story apparently paints a pretty good picture.

Don't play, but I definitely wouldn't rule out a change of scenery along those lines for calendar year 2010. Don't see too much long-term prospects w/this place, but it's a hell of alot better than sitting around moping and asking 'Where's my unemployment check!?'

That was what prompted me to make the change. Long term for MA doesn't look good. Hope you got enough to keep you busy till 2015 or so.

Somali pirates attack US-flagged Maersk Alabama a second time

The Maersk Alabama, a US-flagged container ship hijacked by pirates in April, came under attack for a second time off Somalia on Wednesday.

Gunmen in a small skiff opened fire on the merchant vessel soon after dawn 350 miles east of the Somali coast.

Armed guards aboard the 510ft ship immediately returned fire and the attack was thwarted, said Major Marten Granberg, a spokesman for Navfor, the European Union's anti-piracy naval fleet.

The Maersk Alabama's American captain, Richard Phillips, was held hostage by pirates for five days after he was forced off his ship when it was hijacked seven months ago.

Mr Phillips was freed when US Navy snipers shot dead three of the four men holding him during a daring high-seas rescue mission. Neither Mr Philips nor his 18 crew were hurt during the hijacking.

A derelict but mostly intact 10-stall 1913 Canadian National Roundhouse in Hanna, Alberta is in the running for a C$250,000 restoration bid. However, it has to compete with other projects elsewhere so I think the town of Hanna is at a distinct disadvantage because it has only a few hundred residents.

That's not too bad- beats the hell out of tearing it down. Original roundhouses are pretty rare these days- some museums will build detailed repicas.

It gets better, tho'. Last i heard, the Canadian National was trying like hell to get rid of the tracks that run through Hanna. This is no isolated branchline- this is the line between Calgary, AB and Saskatoon, SK (major metropolitan areas as far as the prarie provinces are concerned). Up until a year ago, it was handling intermodal freights with ginormous 4400 HP diesels and long strings of container cars. Now it's just down to a local freight a few times a week. The track is still in pretty good shape, runs through the scenic and desolate badlands and features a vintage roundhouse...it's just begging for some sort of excursion train to operate there...like maybe between Hanna and Drumheller, AB.

Thanks, Gus. I'll check this out. I have a small understanding of the war through the eyes of the Navy. My grandfather was an SBD Dauntless pilot in the So. Pacific. He had his tonsils removed in New Zealand, and that's about all I know of his time served. I would have been scared shitless to have been one of these guys. On a landing craft, in the air, knowing the toll ahead.

That took guts. I mean going out into the middle of the Pacific and sometimes only using dead reckoning for navigation. Ditching in the sea with no radio contact was not a good outlook for ones future. My contact with WWII vets is minimal. I knew three and they all passed away. No family. An architect I worked for died last month was an Ensign and part of the prepared invasion fleet of Japan in 1945. Another flew B-29s in China and the other B-24s out of Italy into German targets.

Why was the line downgraded?

My 'sources' in Alberta told me that CN would rather re-route any trains between Calgary and Eastern Canada up north on their Calgary-Edmonton line and then east from there. Apparently the line between Drumheller and Calgary follows a creek-bed and tends to be a maintenence headache. As for any remaining online shippers between Calgary and the AB/SK line, they hardly seem as though they can be bothered. I was lobbying the operators of this beauty to see if they could run some specials between Calgary and Drumheller, but they've actually committed to rebuilding about 20 miles worth of rail between Stettler and Donalda, AB.

Rebuild 20 miles of track? That must cost a pretty penny. Still, its a good cause and that is a very pretty engine. I see she's a war build from 1944.

I think they still would. WWII was a unique situation and one that was never duplicated either before or after. That being the potential world domination by the Axis powers. Of course the methods utilized will never be duplicated if we ever cross that road again since the technology has changed. One of those being beach landings (for example) by Higgins boats.

Anyone still upset over last night should try to remember, there's not going to be a test.
And there are no casualties in a blogwar, unless you count bruised egos.

I think it was a wake up call about not just LVQ.

One thing you do an amazing job of, is keeping anger out of it and staying on point. That continued through that thread from what I can see. Thanks for your dedication to civility.

Thank you, sir. Still, I lost my grip on civility at times last night. Mostly because Ludwig and Cato pissed me off so badly that I could not keep the snark out of my posts. They were asking for hostility so much, I had to give them so.

My bad. Guanxi88 and Soxfan4life did great service last night. As for the ManBearPig line, I'd rather not use it. Stuff like that is how the stalkers refer to Ludwig. I'm pretty ticked with him right now, but I don't think we should lower ourselves to the levels found on the chief stalker blog.

I agree in principal, twisting peoples nics is a sort of demonisation that breads more bad behaviour.

But I don't agree that you were ever uncivil on that thread.

It's not the first time he's pulled something like that. Seems like he's doing it for the attention so he can sit there and be all 'look at how edgey I am!"

North of Boston.

A charming area; have family in Winthrop that I haven't taken their outstanding invitation to visit. Must do so one of these days; it would make a good base for going along the coast all the way up to Gloucester.

re: #675 Irenicum

Originally from Staten Island though. NY's forgotten borough!

Not by me. As a kid, I used to go to a day camp up the road from Snug Harbor; hated the other kids but loved being out in the fresh air! Haven't been beyond St. George in recent years, but the Borough of Richmond is more prominent these days ever since the Staten Island Railroad started appearing on the subway maps.

He plays mind/power games. Perhaps it is the only way he can feel significant.

I've seen it before as well and given my normal response, which is to substitute myself as the target regardless of the issue.

Your hostility was a kindness undeserved. But, there's nothing to be done for some folks but to pity them.

I tried, but The Day After Tomorrow Von Quixote doesn't quite roll off the tongue- plus that was one of the best South Park episodes ever.

699 Gus  Thu, Nov 19, 2009 11:21:34pm

My sympathy meter reading for the waterboarded terrorists is at about zero. Might even be in the negative figures. I say that because the topic seemed to have come up at the time. I also say that because when compared to the overall scheme of things that occurred since September 11th 2001 including soldiers, all of the civilians and others around the world all because of this madness of Jihadism that continues to be a threat today.

It is also quite accurate as the same histrionics occurs on the AGW threads as well. That is the key point I have made, not "debasing the science" as I have been wrongly accused, but in questioning the exaggerations and hysterics which contradict the science.

Wow, you read a blogroll? I can only manage to follow this and one other blog.

Yes I do, but its broken down into the following categories of frequencies:

1-Blogs I read every day, even on my iPhone screen when I'm away from home (eg., LGF)
2-Blogs I usually read every day, and skim over when I miss a day (eg., Right Wing Nut House)
3-Blogs I usually read every day, and don't skim over when I miss a day (eg., Balloon Juice)
4-Blogs that are specific to a topic that are read only weekly (eg., The Devil's Excrement)
5-Blogs that I read once a week...at most (eg., Open Left)
6-Blogs that never should have ended up on my blogroll because I don't find them interesting enough to keep up with..too many to count!

(and yes, LFG is the sole places holder in Category 1!)

This whole notion that it is a major issue that 4 mass murdering terrorists - who were known to have information on pending attacks - were forced to gasp a bit in a controlled setting that did them no harm, just seems histrionic and bizarre.

Worse things happen to US citizens in US Federal and State prisons every single day of the week and the same people who are frothing with indignation over the baptism of KSM care not a wit, in fact, they make snarky little "don't pick up the soap" comments.

I am much more upset that more wasn't done to extract every drop of information from them using whatever means necessary and for as long as his heart still beat. This was an unusual and highly unique situation.

Perhaps if they were charged with "crimes against humanity" maybe then it would get their attention. The idea of showing compassion for these animals is hard to swallow.

Another thing is that it does not end with waterboarding and it includes claims of inhumanity with regards to incarceration and/or the death penalty. Many of them would say that a life sentence at ADMAX is inhumane and prefer to incarcerate him in a condo like setting like they do in Germany.

It wouldn't surprise me to hear theories that they could be rehabilitated or like PETA claiming that if we change their diets they could become "contributing members of society in the near future." We've heard it all before. Or worse hearing that "it's partly our own fault" or that "we are guilty of the same."

Given the recent chatter I would have to agree that this civilian trial will indeed turn into a media circus and propaganda coup for the far left that will continually bring up the torture meme on a frequent basis.

Quite Concur. We must be ready to defend the CIA and the military when the left attacks these institutions and we must remind those who will listen that these institutions of brave Americans are being attacked because of the Obama Administration.

I agree as well. The CIA and their contractors should be immune. They were doing their jobs as required by the situation on the ground. Some people seem to forget what happened on that day. When we heard the crashing of people on the canopies at the world trade center as they lept to their deaths to avoid burning to death. One after the other. They had to make a decision. I will die. Now is the time. It was a form of voluntary suicide which was the result of their heinous acts. Of these people like KSM that had to endure what? A couple of rounds of waterboarding and then a visit to the dentist to get a root canal with fresh towels, new sandals, and a clean copy of the Koran.

Hi, a slightly belated thanks for the open door. I found LGF thru a FARK link, began reading. I'm not sure if I can classify myself as one ideology or another; I've lived in the Far East, Germany, 6 different states, and have driven or set foot in 45 of 'em in my 52 years. My perspectives are pretty deeply informed by this -- as a lifelong nomad (at least until the last 10 years or so), I've come to appreciate groups and/or forums that embrace "outsiders" rather than greet them with suspicion. I'm also VERY much of the "I don't give a flying rat's ass what you SAY you believe -- show me" school of thinking. As much as teh internets are about babble of varying degrees of coherence (see this very post for a real-world definition of babble...lol), I'm suspicious of talk. I appreciate adept lyricists, but value the music beneath them more. Interplay and interreaction fascinate me, and I have an almost unreasonable admiration for CRAFT. What I like about LGF is that, despite the occasional sniping and testiness, there's real respect and honest engagement in these discussions amongst people with real differences. And any enemy of extremism is a friend of mine.

Nice and cozy in here after having been stuck in the snow outside for some 3 years! I'm freezing, is there a fireplace around here?

Intros: A Dutch guy who has lived in Israel for 14 years, served in the IDF during the 1st Lebanon war and the 1st intifada. Spent the summer of 2006 in the rocket-rain in Northern Israel without an umbrella and got hooked on LGF for the exposé's on fake photography during that war. Have been following LGF ever since.

I am definitely a descendant of the apes, no doubt about it and, unless I am sorely mistaken I still have some fishy genes in me as well.

I'm about as religious as my car's right-rear tire so I'll pledge not to discuss God here - she would not like that at all, I'm sure!
