Sunday Afternoon Music: Tom Waits, ‘Poor Edward’

Music • Views: 3,118

From the exceptional album Alice, Tom Waits tells the troubling tale of “Poor Edward.”

Youtube Video

Did you hear the news about Edward?
On the back of his head
He had another face
Was it a woman’s face
Or a young girl
They said to remove it would kill him
So poor Edward was doomed

The face could laugh and cry
It was his Devil twin
And at night she spoke to him
Of things heard only in hell
They were impossible to separate
Chained together for life

Finally the bell tolled his doom
He took a suite of rooms
And hung himself and her
From the balcony irons
Some still believe he was freed from her
But I knew her too well
I say she drove him to suicide
And took poor Edward to hell

I love Tom’s voice, but his songs are so sad!
It’s too nice of an afternoon for that!

Looks like Yoops over at the Defenseman blog has had enough of Catonian ridicule. Also, he says he won’t be coming back to play here anytime soon. Such a loss.

Final exchange, as far as I’m concerned:

Cato the Elder Says:

Yoops, I’ve created a cocktail in your honor over at LGF.

The Defenseman

Two measures of milksop juice.
Three measures of hundred-proof, distilled cowardice.
Shaking and quaking, no stirring, please.
Top with a dash of of Amaretto, for that hint of cyanide, and garnish with a small, wrinkled cocktail pickle.

Note: Best served with flaccid little wieners and French mustard on milquetoast.

If you don’t have any French mustard, Grey Poop will do.

This drink is often served at Hoops games.

You’re not banned at LGF, you know, Yoops. C’mon over and create a cocktail for me!

BG Says:

Cato, you’ve become Iceweasel’s voice here as far as I can see. All you’ve done is to be an apologist for her crap.

No, I’m not banned, and my beef is not with Charles. It is with Iceweasel and Jimmah. I, however, have little interest in posting at LGF right now. My interests have changed, and I have very little time for the vast number of comments I used to make. And before you think because it is I that I am posting on other political sites, think again. I post on sites about my hobbies. In fact, this is the last thing (this post) I’ll have to say about the situation for the moment.

If you persist, we have evidence that Iceweasel was very much involved, written logs from email and parachat, and evidence that she did as much to stand up for Hoops as Jimmah or me.

Cato the Elder Says [Your comment is awaiting moderation]:

Yoops, I am no one’s voice here but my own. You called me out by name, and I replied. End of story.

Enjoy your hobbies. One of mine happens to be mocking teh stoopid, wherever it shows itself. I’m sorry you don’t want to play – it might have been fun. I promise I’d be very gentlemanly if you came over to LGF.

Hoops, now, that’s another matter. But I neither speak for nor answer to him.

Good day, sir!

Except for the times that people do explode bombs, of course, or fly planes into houses.

Your response is kind of odd. First you raise the possibility that it’s an agent provocateur, which is rather complicating things beyond necessity, and then you feel the need to indulge in some moral relativism.

Are you glad you live in a country where people who fought in the civil rights movement are still being spat on for their political views?

I’m not really following Spittlegate, as I think there are other, more hilarious disturbing things to focus on, but from this:

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com…]

Cleaver told me: “I said to this one person, ‘You spat on me.’ I thought he was going to say, ‘Hey, I was yelling. Sorry.’ But he continuing yelling and, for a few seconds, I pointed at him and said, ‘You spat on me.’ ”
[…]
“I would prefer to believe that the man who allowed his saliva to hit my face was irrational for a moment,” Cleaver said.

I get the impression that Cleaver also thinks it was spittle rather than spit. But that writer could be full of shit, I dunno.

Note: if it’s me, and we’re either not dating or I’m not paying you specifically for the purpose, I’d generally prefer to avoid any of your bodily fluids.

The video clearly shows a reaction that could have been due to spitting. If you want to be magnanimous you could say it was accidental, since serial yellers do develop a lot of spittle in their mouths; I’m told.

That this incident overrides the obvious fact that many people in the US cannot accept the fact that the voting system sometimes means that opponents lose, is sad.

It depends how quickly the police told Cantor that the bullet was a spent bullet fired randomly from a long way away.

My assumption is that they were able to tell him this quickly, since they saw that the bullet only broke the window and didn’t penetrate the blinds.

There’s also the possibility that he wasn’t so informed because it wasn’t actually his office window, and so the cops didn’t feel the need to inform him. But in that case, he was speaking from a position of ignorance.

68 keloyd  Sun, Mar 28, 2010 4:11:46pm

1. I am certain that if Emmanuel Cleaver said ‘spittle’, that Keith Olbermann would still shout ‘spit’ every day for a week.

2. Cleaver has no record of crying wolf, if he ultimately clarifies “spit” and not “spittle”. He is not a race hustler. He took a lot of flack for supporting Mizz Rotham-hyphen-Clinton for president (pausing to cross myself against the devil and all her works) . In civil court, where one only needs a preponderance of evidence, one believable witness is good enough for me.

3. Texas has some really cartoonish race hustling pols. One local here in Dallas made news when he threw a tantrum over the racism inherent in some paperwork disappearing “into a black hole”. Black holes are racist.

Compared to left wing nut demonstrations, how many police cars have been overturned? How many riot police have had to use tear gas? How many businesses vandalized? How many fires set in dumpsters? none? just one guy spitting and a Kentucky flag? and some corny hitler-bama signs? This is the biggest meh of all the meh’s that have ever meh’ed.

Because I am willing to take the word of a man who’s been beaten bloody for standing up for what he believes, that he was spat on, during a confrontation where I can clearly see people out of control of their rage— that means that I’m spreading hate?

Ok. Now, after the fact (that the police have given their results), has Cantor bothered to come out and clarify that somebody was not shooting at his office?

Is it necessary? Now that the results are out, isn’t it only noteworthy if he comes out and continues to assert that somebody was shooting at his office?

I am not being nasty, I have called no names, I have made no accusations, I simply have asked others to prove their accusations an the result is out there for all to see.

The only conclusion anyone can draw from the video alone is that a black man reacted strongly against a white man yelling at him from less than two feet away, and that the white man was the only one in sight covering the sides of his mouth with his hands, which I think most people would not do if yelling at someone within arms reach.

Reasonable conclusion are that

a) the yeller is an asshole.
b) that something likely hit the black mans face.
c) that if something was launched it may have been unintentional, but since I’m a witch I doubt it.

I’m having trouble with the idea of a bullet fired randomly thru Cantor’s office window. I may be lacking in imagination.

It was a spent bullet, fired into the air from a good distance away. The angle of impact was from above, which is consistent with a Baghdad-style air-shot. The kinetic energy of the bullet was so far spent that it only penetrated a windowpane, then bounced off the blinds and landed about a foot from the wall. This according to the police report.

“I shot a bullet in the air.
It came to earth I know not where.”

If you can ‘splain to me how a person actually targeting that office could mimic the physics of a spent bullet dropping from the sky so convincingly, I’m all ears.

3. Texas has some really cartoonish race hustling pols. One local here in Dallas made news when he threw a tantrum over the racism inherent in some paperwork disappearing “into a black hole”. Black holes are racist.

YES! John Wiley Price!

JWP is legendary for his magic deck containing an infinite number of race cards. It must be very tiring to be actively seeking out offense at all times.

City council meetings on public access TV are some of the best cheap entertainment a person could ever hope for. Just do a Youtube search for “city council” and watch the hilarity roll in. Something about local government draws kooks like a magnet. Both the pols and the constituents. These same lunatics often progress up the ladder and end up in the House of Representatives…

I see your point, but consider the demographics involved. If we get to the point where the 49-65 age group starts torching police cars and breaking storefront windows, we are right and truly fucked beyond all measure.

I found the vile article in question. It’s first few paragraphs are below:

“Stipulated that it is illegal to kill your congressman,” Bill began using his typical cynical grin and creepy, sinister tone. “But is it immoral?”

I keep Bill as a friend because he forces me to think, often in extremely unpleasant ways. If you ever meet Bill I encourage you to discuss religion, politics or philosophy, but avoid sex. You simply don’t want to know what is on his mind regarding the last subject.

He was insistent on the question of the morality of murdering members of congress, framing his inquiry in the mechanics of personal privilege. Bill’s weak suits are law and history, and thus he was exploring as much as pontificating. In the end we concluded that capping your congress critter was indeed illegal, but in certain circumstance morally justified if not actually an imperative.

(Disclosure: I am in no way, shape, form or processes advocating killing your congressman, congresswoman, senator or any other office holder. However, I would not shed a tear if some specific members of congress were suddenly speechless due to being suddenly breathless, and I might even crack open a fresh bottle of Jack Daniels upon the demise of some others).

Extreme Bad Craziness.

My favorite living songwriter is Mr. Waits.

I highly recommend, for anyone who likes him, this collection of interviews with him:

[Link: www.amazon.com…]

‘Bone Machine’ is my favorite album ever.

Someone mentioned that his songs were sad. In Bone - every song is about death or contains the word “bone”. Many of the instruments Waits uses are found art - saws, cranks, anvils, chains, etc - from an old barn.

Murder in the Red Barn sets the tone.

re: #14 Cato the Elder

Looks like Yoops over at the Defenseman blog has had enough of Catonian ridicule. Also, he says he won’t be coming back to play here anytime soon. Such a loss.

Final exchange, as far as I’m concerned:

If his beef isn’t with Charles, why did he spit the dummy oot by closing his blog and preventing anyone from reading it’s content after he and rose failed in their first attempts to get iceweasel and myself banned from LGF?

Apparently Yooper is so hard of thinking that he reckons posting comments on a blog is tantamount to “creating and maintaining it”. I guess I must be responsible for creating and maintaining LGF too then! What a lousy, stupid liar he is.

As for iceweasel, she didn’t even post there - and to reiterate, Defenseman was up and running before iceweasel was even a regular commenter on LGF.

I stopped posting there when I realised the site was just giving the stalkers more webspace to spew their crap on, I’m not going to start posting there again just to give him and rose the same now that they are stalking us. He won’t post here again for two main reasons - first, because he lacks the guts, and second, he despises LGF.

Finally, it is interesting that he doesn’t even try to defend himself against the fact that he let Hoops take the fall for his website but instead tries to shift the blame for his own cowardice to other people by saying they didn’t call him out for his cowardice soon enough. Un fucking believable.

Hoops was outed by the stalkers when they thought he was responsible for ‘Defenseman’. Later they figured out it was Yooper and the posted his personal information too. Now Yooper is trying to get the stalkers to do the same to us.

He and rose couldn’t get us banned from LGF by writing to Charles. Now they hope to get us to stop posting on LGF by having the stalkers chase down our personal information and post it. He and rose are scum

Ratzinger is the Perfect Pope, By Richard Dawkins

“Should Pope Benedict XVI be held responsible for the escalating scandals over clerical sexual abuse in Europe?” Yes he should, and it’s going to escalate a lot further, as more and more victims break through the guilt of their childhood indoctrination and come forward.

“Should he be investigated for how cases of abuse were handled under his watch as archbishop of Munich or as the Vatican’s chief doctrinal enforcer?” Yes, of course he should. This former head of the Inquisition should be arrested the moment he dares to set foot outside his tinpot fiefdom of the Vatican, and he should be tried in an appropriate civil - not ecclesiastical - court. That’s what should happen. Sadly, we all know our faith-befuddled governments will be too craven to do it.

“Should the pope resign?” No. As the College of Cardinals must have recognized when they elected him, he is perfectly - ideally - qualified to lead the Roman Catholic Church. A leering old villain in a frock, who spent decades conspiring behind closed doors for the position he now holds; a man who believes he is infallible and acts the part; a man whose preaching of scientific falsehood is responsible for the deaths of countless AIDS victims in Africa; a man whose first instinct when his priests are caught with their pants down is to cover up the scandal and damn the young victims to silence: in short, exactly the right man for the job. He should not resign, moreover, because he is perfectly positioned to accelerate the downfall of the evil, corrupt organization whose character he fits like a glove, and of which he is the absolute and historically appropriate monarch.

I doubt you can claim it. Even if you took it to your property:

Abandoned Vehicles on Your Property - Oregon

This page provides information about abandoned vehicles.

There are no provisions in the law that allow you to claim ownership of an abandoned vehicle on your property, even if you have no knowledge of who owns the vehicle or why it was left there. Also, DMV cannot give you the name or address of the person who owns the vehicle.

Yeah, here’s the Oregon Vehicle Code which covers abandoned vehicles. I think if you call the cops they will usually put a sticker on the car giving the owner 24 hours. Then it’s towed.

I am getting a vague idea that what if there was actually 20 million two or three person militia groups instead?

Too small to target and too many to track down.

A grass root public announcement by any patriotic citizen that they swear allegiance and are now declaring they are their own militia.

(Yes I know the Constitution has a passage of this very idea, but everyone ignores THAT piece of paper)

I liked it but there’s something about that grille I don’t like. Otherwise it is the fastest and has some great technological features. Anyone getting a car that can go that fast and so quickly sure better be careful and have a lot of self control. Otherwise, well, you know. Probably would be a good idea to get some high race training alongside the purchase. Given the price I think that would be no problem for the buyers.

Charles may enjoy this, if he comes back and sees it: I’m reading Terry Teachout’s Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong. In one early scene, the Delta bumpkin Armstrong has landed a spot with the suave NYC Fletcher Henderson band. They rehearse, and Henderson tells what happened:

One passage began triple fortissimo, and then it suddenly softened down on the next passage to double pianissimo. The score was properly marked “pp” to indicate the pianissimo, but when everybody else softened down, there was Louis, still blowing as hard as he could. I stopped the band, and told him—pretty sharply, I guess—that in this band we read the marks as well as the notes. I asked him if he could read the marks and he said he could. But then I asked him: “What about ‘pp’? and he answered, “Why, it means pound plenty!

On the ATT thing?

It’s a change in the tax law. Companies that used to get a federal write-off for prescription drug coverage for retirees don’t get that write-off anymore.

It’s not a new tax. It’s not a bill. It’s the end of a writeoff that subsidized a private company offering a private benefit.

Frankly, it’s really only going to impact very large companies… Not many small companies cover benefits in retirement. In fact, not many companies at all offer retirement benefits.

Ah, government. “If you think our problems are bad, wait until you see our solutions…”

This is the reason that a lot of large companies opposed HCR. It’s a huge benefit (no pun intended) that they can afford to pay for benefits for employees while a lot of little companies can not.

It’s really hard for people to leave jobs because good benefits are a big perk and that stifles entrepreneurship. I also am a principle in a small company and it hurts us. We lose talented people because they go to companies where benefits are part of the package. We just can’t compete and it sucks.

Not to mention that I’ve spent the vast majority of the last 7 years without health insurance. (I’ve had two surgeries in the past 5 years, which puts me in a risk pool. Even catastrophic coverage is stratospheric in cost).

Also, I ponder why we’re (and by we I mean the people with whom I own a company) are responsible for making sure that someone has health insurance? Why the heck is that somehow a corporate responsibility. I’m all for being a good corporate citizen and all, but even if we COULD afford to pay for benefits, there’re a lot of other things we could be doing with that money, like hiring additional people, marketing, buying some new frakking computers so that people stop calling their poor tired network admin.

The amount of money that the government spends subsidizing people’s health care in one way or another is crazy. If it’s not direct (Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits, indigent care, etc.) it’s indirect through tax writeoffs either on a corporate or a personal level (and yes, you can take medical off your taxes… if it’s over 10% AGI.)

excellent points, especially about how we’ve lulled ourselves into believing that the company should by default be the insurance provider.

I firmly believe that we’d spend far less on health care if we had focused on expanding HSA’s, catastrophic insurance coverage, and portability. Give people the means and the motivation to be more concerned about their health care spending and they’ll do a better job reining in their costs.

I tend to agree. Part of the problem is that there isn’t any incentive for the consumer to have any understanding of how much and what money is spent on in health transactions.

Take, for example, what hospitals charge (and insurers pay) for basic crap. Fine, hospitals are expensive, that’s why the room is 500 bucks a day… but I was billed IIRC 40 bucks a back for a saline drip. FORTY DOLLARS. FOR SALT WATER.

Exactly. I guarantee you that if i were allowed to take just a percentage of what my company and i spend together on my insurance and book it in an HSA that (a) rolled over from year to year without loss and (b) was tax deductible, i’d spend a helluva lot less because it would be MY MONEY.

Right. We need portable catastrophic coverage so that we don’t have to debate whether to have chemo, God forbid. We need tax-deductible HSA’s so that we have an incentive to debate whether we should get an X-ray and an MRI on our big toe…

Well, to be fair, it is salt water, guaranteed to be sterile, with any number of special conditions on it, not to mention market volume issues, transportation, shelf life, and the staff to monitor and store and administer it. You didn’t pay for the salt water, just everything that goes with it.

What is of more interest to me is why someone who walks in with cash (or no cash) will likely be billed twice what an insurance company is billed.

That makes very little sense unless you’re outlawing non-catastrophic insurance plans.

But even if someone had a non-catastrophic plan, there is very little evidence to show that the right people would refrain from getting the tests— as in, people who aren’t really at risk.

Do you have any data to show otherwise, that there is utility in revealing those (highly arbitrary) costs?

A great percentage of basic health care is spent on what one could accurately quantify as ‘commodities’. Shots, visits, x-rays…these are consumables. I take it as self-evident that we know how to shop for consumables.

We are better off having more ownership over what we each spend on our care. I continue to await a cogent philosophy explaining why it would be better if we had less ownership over what we spend on our health care.

Well, you’re doubly wrong. Those things are not consumables, by any sane metric, and we don’t really know how to shop for consumables. Most shoppers do not make decisions based on very rational criteria.

So you don’t actually have any data to support your theoretical supposition?

The concept of ‘ownership’ is a nebulous thing. To me, there are the people who will get the x-ray if their doctor recommends it, and those who won’t. If the x-ray is very expensive, some people may decide not to even if their doctor recommends it. Some people will want the x-ray even if their doctor doesn’t recommend it.

If you make the cost more of a worry for the person buying the health care, you are asking them to make a judgement about the worth of that care versus the price— that is not a qualification they have the knowledge to make. Doctor’s do— that’s why we rely on them.

Deciding whether or not to get medical services and procedures is not like shopping for a cell phone. We will get nowhere if we pretend that it is.

Doctors most certainly do not balance the worth of the care versus the price. Not even close.

Deciding whether or not to get medical services and procedures is not like shopping for a cell phone. We will get nowhere if we pretend that it is.

Then this is where we will have to disagree. Not all medical procedures are like shopping for a cell phone. Some are more expensive and complicated, and some far less so.

Basically, you wish to deny me the freedom to pay less for my health care because you don’t believe that I can figure out what i ought to do after a discussion with my doctor, unless i’ve grossly misunderstood you.

Nope. That was the individual charge for the bags of saline.

I also paid for the room, 3 disposable needles, rubber gloves (3 bucks a pair!), an ER fee…

Hospital bills are insane if you actually read them.

You don’t get my point. All those things are allocated a share of the cost. The allocation may be arbitrary, but you can be sure that the cost of the room would go up by $30 if the saline bag was priced at $10 instead of $40.

I can buy a little bag of 4 stainless screws, nicely hung in a special rack at Home Depot for, say, $2. But I’ll bet you I could buy a 5 gallon bucket of the same screws for $0.01 each if I went to the factory.

I’m paying for the convenience and all the overhead that goes with it when I pay $0.50 per piece.

I repeat, It is the different pricing for different payees even though they all incur the same overhead, that bothers me.

Cost transparency would be huge. But the less we pay out of pocket, the less we care…and if we don’t care, we won’t insist on transparency.

I wouldn’t deny you that freedom, but I seriously doubt that you would be capable of making that decision on economic grounds unless you are your own doctor, or have the luxury of time to shop for the best deals on urgent open heart surgery, or tell the ambulance which hospital to go to (after you had selected the ambulance service of your choice).

You are not talking of getting new bifocals or laser eye surgery are you?

i addressed this earlier. whether i should get chemo or an angioplasty (God forbid) should not be an economic decision, so we should all at least have big-ticket insurance.

i am capable of making a decision about whether i should go back to the doctor for an MRI for my back if he said that he didn’t really think it was necessary. many people will opt for the test anyway because they don’t pay much for it, so why not?

Transparency is cool but I don’t have the time or skills to analyse every aspect of medical care when I might find I need it, which is when I have other things on my mind. I would prefer to pay someone else a small percentage of my money to ensure that I wasn’t being screwed. I suppose you could call that an aspect of Health Care Reform.

As to those who don’t care; there are plenty of those around and they are the ones who have nothing to lose to begin with and they can get all the care they want for free yesterday, and last year; but many of them could have contribute part of the paycheck they blew every weekend towards their ER visits, had they been required to do so, instead of relying on you or me to subsidize them.

Expense and complexity do not in the least go together. Moreover, you’re still wrong; evaluating even relatively simple therapies is still something that’s complex. It’s not what you know, it’s what you don’t know.

You are talking of a specific aspect of health care, namely testing to the wazzoo for CYA reasons.

What we need is “death panels” to decide if a CYA test is really necessary or not. After all if you can make that decision as a non medical professional, then it can’t be really necessary, can it?/
