Michigan Militia Indictments

US News • Views: 6,074

Details are emerging today about the weekend’s FBI/DHS raids on a Christian militia group in Michigan’s Lenawee County. The group, “Hutaree,” was allegedly planning to murder a member of local law enforcement, then attack the resulting funeral procession with improvised explosive devices — earning them federal indictments for seditious conspiracy and attempted use of weapons of mass destruction.

The group’s ideology is a mix of standard anti-government paranoia and End Times theocratic craziness; in one of the videos posted at their YouTube channel, men in paramilitary uniforms burn a United Nations flag, then replace it with the “Colonial Christian Republic” flag.

Detroit station WXYZ has a video report, including an interview with the ex-wife of the alleged militia cult leader, David Brian Stone: UPDATE: Members of Milita Group Indicted.

Does the word "Hutaree" mean anything, or is it just a hunting cry? Or perhaps a hog call?

Not sure but 3 of the underlying charges are wrapped up in the sedition charge. The feds better have that initial sedition charge wrapped up nicely.

Before the "Who makes a better Religion of Peace" discussion spreads here I'd like to share some statistics from erols.com:

Selected Death Tolls for Wars, Massacres and Atrocities ...

In short casting stones or generalizing about an entire class of religions based on what some of their adherants (or those who claim to be adherants) do is missing the mark.

As for me: before passing judgement I'd like to see how many of their modern counterparts take ownership of their actions vs. how many disown their actions. That alone will tell me who to avoid in crowded places.

40 Almost Killed by Space Hookers  Mon, Mar 29, 2010 11:08:04am

Sorry for the repost,

It is going to be a little while until I post again bc of the holidays.

I want to check in and wish everyone here the best.

I also want to briefly talk about the significance of terror attacks on the eve of Pesach. There was, as I am sure everyone here knows, a double suicide bombing in Russia that killed or wounded hundreds of innocent people.
I am sure that everyone is aware of the militia cell in Michigan, who for notions of Christian apocalypse, were planning on murdering police officers and then attacking their funerals - in order to kill more police - and start a war on the US itself.

Pesach is about freedom. It is about freedom in every simple and every deep sense of the word.

Freedom does not mean "do whatever you want." Freedom is the freedom to choose to do what is right and to know that there does exist a moral compass that we all must obey. Freedom means being able to resist the depredations of those who would lie to you or coerce you away from doing what is right.

The four sons, a parable discussed at seder, are very much a parable for four stages of moral development.

The lowest level of morality is to reject it morality outright and claim that freedom only means to do whatever one wants, with no regard for others.

This is the evil son. He asks, "What does this mean to you?" In other words, the responsibility that comes with freedom and the consequences of one's actions are denied by him. We tell him what it means to us. We sharply tell him that is evil and would not be worthy of redemption.

This is the level of the terrorist. To completely reject the point of having freedom in the first place. All others are not people at all to be cared for, but objects to be defined as less than human if they do not blindly follow the immorality of the terrorist code. This is not unique to Islamists. Neo-Nazis and Christofascists are the same way.

Part of freedom is knowing that you must always cherish it and fight to preserve it. The struggle to do so is internal as well as external. It is all too easy to get comfortable with giving up a little freedom, with claiming that the way things are is just the way things are, and that one has no responsibility to act. This was the slave mentality of Mitzriam (Egypt). The word Mitzraim needs one more comment. It literally means the narrow place. It is a spiritual, intellectual and moral state of denial and seeking ignorance so as to avoid facing the world and oneself.

The wise son asks that the rules and the meanings of the seder are better explained so that he may better serve, and fulfill his duty. We tell him the rules of dessert. The message is that one must use one's freedom to make the most of all opportunities to do what is right - right now. The seder, like life, has an end. Your chance to act is in the here and now.

There are thousands of groups out there who would take your freedom. There are millions of people who falsely think that freedom is only something abstracted on the level of the wicked son, that it comes with no price tag and no responsibility. There are millions more, who see the price of freedom and would rather have a little slavery. Then there are the Islamists and the Militias. They remind us what the cost of slavery is.

In some cases the labels were even attempts to take ownership of a derogatory term and use it as a positive label. The word Mormons is one of those.

Other made up terms are just plain funny. The Mormon use of the word "fetch" as a swear word substitute is one of my personal favorites. (Personally I think the frame of mind that causes one to curse is probably as "sinful" as the actual curse word itself, so substitute swear words never made much sense to me.)

48 hour rule.

This gang looks like a gourmet nut casserole to be sure, but high-profile law enforcement raids on religious kooks have a bad history. Besides Waco we have the more recent raid on that polygamous cult ranch near Eldorado Texas. This involved hundreds of leos, as well as helicopters and even tracked armor for crying out loud. Several hundred children were hauled away and sent to foster care. Eventually, the raid turned out to have been instigated by a serial crank, almost all the charges were proven to be without merit, the children were returned, and the state faces millions in compensation claims.
Interestingly, some of the same CPS workers who instigated the Waco raid were on hand at Eldorado too.

Pamela Geller is the epitome of one trapped in Mitzraim. Her view is so narrow and constricted and her ability to do what is right so limited by fear and anger that she even unwittingly aids those who would destroy her own people.

Point taken, but I have no wish to go there since the previous thread already attempted that and has devolved into the standard pissing contest.

It might well just be a local circus. I'm not sure that many outside groups are going to step up and defend the men under indictment assuming that the current information on their organization is accurate.

How long the media keeps up with coverage might turn out to be very short, or simply stay low-key. Federal case, so I expect there is a chance that the proceedings are kept under tight security and the media information (film, etc.) might be limited.

And I guess the real key is who thinks they can score political points off this, and how they assess the risk from attempting to do so.

Where as the militia movements in this country are certainly a threat in general, I assure you, their numbers are small enough, and there is sufficient surveillance going on, that any "move" on the part of any one of these groups, or even all of them, could be contained in a matter of days.

And most of these groups are mainly autonomous, there is not a lot of cooperation going on cross-group.

As I have mentioned in the past, I have some personal experience in the past with a number of these groups and members.

I've pointed this out before, MOST of these religious based militia groups base a part of their "theology" on Anglo-Israelism, which reasons that the white Europeans are the decedents of the lost tribes of Israel and there for heirs to the promises contained in the Hebrew and Greek scriptures.

No one was shot here so at least they're learning. Ruby Ridge ended with multiple deaths and cost the taxpayers millions.

And of course, I'm already seeing the comments from conservatives all over Twitter gleefully pouncing on the story of the guy who threatened Eric Cantor, because he was an Obama donor.

They're going to try to put a political spin on it, of course, after all the recent stories of right wing threats and extremism.

Check out Malkin today. She broke her neck to do an entry on the nutbar who threatened Cantor. (who of course is an Obama donor!) She is ignoring the militia who was on a mission to take back America.

Their actual physical numbers are no where enough to cause the kind of chaos that you are imagining.

Granted, anything they do can be terrible, but it's not like this is some organization of cooperating groups of people entrenched in state after state.

It's not a standing home army. It's pockets of religious nuts, who can be problematic, but there is no way they have the numbers or organization to cause a "revolution."

Just reading a thread on another blog that gave a clue as to how convoluted some posters thoughts become. A poster quotes Lee Iacocca writing about "Where have all the leaders gone" as a slam against Obama. Another poster breaks the echo chamber rule by posting a link to Snopes that shows it was written in 2007, and the stuff about Obama was added in later e-mails to make it seem to be directed at Obama.

The final conclusion on the blog ? Snopes is leftie, Obama supporting site, amazing.

Which is not unusual. Group speak is important to group solidarity and for recognizing each other, and it bestows a uniqueness to thier existence.

Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses are a prime example of exclusivity groups who have created new terms for standard Christian labels in order to separate themselves from the rest of Christendom.

Tru dat:

Mormon Speak:

Frick, Fetch, Flip, Frip, Frig, Friggin: Replacement words for "F" word.
Shiz: Book of Mormon Character who led armies against the good guys. Now used to replace 'Sh*t' word. 'He's so full of shiz.'
Rumored to be the Snoop Dog precursor to 'Shizzle' when he ran into some missionaries. //sarc
BOM: Book of Mormon, "Did you give him a BOM, he asked some questions showing interest?"
Quad: Standard Accepted Mormon Canon of Scripture: Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price.
"Honey, can you get my quad off the table and bring it to me?"
Quorum: Priesthood group, "Hey, Brother James, you coming to Elders Quorum this sunday? We missed you last week."
Ward: The boundaries designating which church building you attend. "What ward are you in? I go to 43rd Ward."

I am sure there are others, but these are the ones that most people might not get on first hearing them which are commonly used words by many of my club. heh.

Well, we have to make sure that everyone has the "homosexual agenda" fully forced upon them. There's no way of knowing who is already gay and who isn't, so we just have to include everybody.

She does, she really does. She is a rasha, whose words and actions are chillul Hashem. Honestly Cato, there is no stronger condemnation I could make.

Perhaps fortunately - or unfortunately.

Most American rabbis of note are very staunchly private about their politics however. I honestly doubt that many even know she exists.

As a side note even in Israel, the gadolim - the real great rabbaim - try hard to stay out of politics. In almost every case you hear of some crazy rabbi shooting his mouth off politically even over there, you are ultimately talking about a little pisher.

The courts have ruled that American citizen terrorists plotting terror attacks within the U.S. and captured on U.S. soil can be treated as enemy combatants. They do not have to be given a trial. They do not have to be charged with a crime. They do not have to be given any of their rights as U.S. citizens. Just like a foreign terrorist captured in Afghanistan.

Wait, there's a BOOK about gay Republicans?

It's about the collapse of the Republican Party brought on by the takeover from the Dominionist religious right. A rather surprising number of them repress their homosexual tendencies so hard (so to speak) that it tends to come out rather unexpectedly. No pun intended. One could almost draw the conclusion that the legislators pushing the hardest for restrictions on gay rights and pornography are doing so to keep the temptations (opportunities for homosexual expression or encounters, not the singing group) away from them.

That link is from 2005. Has the law been changed?

Nevermind, it's actually been to the SCOTUS. They declined to rule on the case, labeling it moot, as Obama had previously requested that al-Marri be formally charged with terrorism and indicted. But they declined to overturn the ruling of the 4th Circuit court that upheld the Government's ability to hold U.S. citizens indefinitely without cause. So, as it stands the Feds still have the ability to hold a U.S. citizen indefinitely in violation of his Constitutional rights as an "enemy combatant."

I have never figured out the Feds problem with IT systems. I remember doing evals. Had to have 4 paper copies and 2 hard disks. WTF?

I remember when my command got the requirements for a "secure computer system" and our CO gave us the order he wanted the entire batallion brought to code immeadiately. We made sure his system was brought to code first. No network connection, no removable media (floppy, CD or DVD) and the hard disk had to be removable, locked up in a secure vault and signed for every time he wanted to use it.

That project was quickly aborted.

You have Constitutional Rights as a U.S. Citizen. Rights which can now be completely stripped away by the Government as soon as they decide to label you an "enemy combatant." Go look at the anti-terrorism statutes we have on the books in the U.S. and tell me you are glad your Constitution means jack shit once the Government can legally label you a "terrorist."

Will the tea partiers finally wake up and smell the coffee on this one? Well said. The international hypocrisy angle is astonishing.

The Russian campaign in Chechnya was brutal by any standard. Yet there was barely a peep about it compared to the hand wringing done about Israel. All while the Russians really don't care over much about civilian casualties and the Israelis go beyond any other military in the world to avoid them.

However, we all know that Israel will never get a fair wrap for her actions in the press.

I've no idea. I don't mean to trash another Jew right before Pesach, but I don't see much evidence that Pam's Judaism is terribly important to her outside of a very narrow political usage. She harps on it, but I don't get the impression that there's much beyond that.

I could be wrong.

I see every reason - especially before Pesach - to use her as an example of what a Jew is not.

I think I've figured out a way to take care of the militia problem and the national debt all at once. My cunning plan is to send them a copy of "The Mouse That Roared" and tell them it's a top-secret plan on how to successfully overthrow the government.

Okay, now we let them invade and we surrender immediately.

Then we tell them about the national debt and would they please be sure to make their checks legible.

It's perfect, I tell you, perfect!

You know, it's random and has nothing to do with the real subject at hand, but something I'm noticing about all these militia site links is the superfluous rank phenomenon.

Everyone seems to be a Major General or a Lieutenant Colonel or similar. Even when in "command" of like, six dudes with hunting rifles.

What gives?

Reminds me of "lieutenants" in urban drug rings. They are overseeing a couple of low-level thugs selling crack in $10 increments, and all of a sudden they are lieutenants.

Exactly. The supreme court cases go back to the trials of WW2 era german/u.s. citizens. The president has to be given the authority to declare citizens "enemy combatants" which they've done in the Military Commission Acts. If a citizen is picked up and declared an enemy combatant they still have the right to challenge their detention.

" Erik Brown, who owns Dynamic Marketing Inc. and most recently charged the Steve Poizner for Governor campaign more than $10,000 for campaign literature and mailings, was reimbursed by the RNC for the almost $2,000 in charges at Voyeur West Hollywood, according to FEC filings and online reports reviewed by The Daily Caller…

The RNC has denied that Steele spent the money at Voyeur. But it appears Brown is close to the chairman. In October, Brown wrote on Twitter, “Enjoying the football game with RNC Chairman Michael Steele. (Eagles vs Redskins at FedEx Field)”.

So, I left this comment in the other thread without realizing that everyone had run off already and that I was essentially talking to myself, except this time on the internet. Here is my comment again, then:

First off, I'd like to briefly note that the two commentators that I first point to as being incompetent and thus in need of amplified criticism are Thomas Friedman and Charles Krauthammer, one of whom is a liberal and one of whom is a conservative, and both of whom are fairly moderate in the degree of their partisanship. Based on this and perhaps the people who get their own chapters in my book - Friedman (liberal), Krauthammer (conservative), Richard Cohen (liberal), William Bennett (conservative), Martin Peretz (liberal), Robert Stacy McCain (conservative), it has been alleged by a couple of people that my project must necessarily be noticeably partisan in nature. Well done, guys.

Of course, I do end up going after more conservatives than liberals in my general output, which has been media criticism. I do so because it is easier. See above, for instance. There's a lot of nonsense that goes on at liberal blogs, but it absolutely pales in comparison to that which goes on at conservative ones. My criticism, like Charles', is generally targeted at hypocrisy, intellectual dishonesty, demonstrably untrue assertions, and anti-intellectualism, rather than something to do with an actual partisan divide on an issue such as health care. See the reaction Charles received from his former allies over the past two years or so of messy breakup. Charles hasn't changed much on issues; it just so happened that he had less tolerance for racism and hyper-nationalism and superstition and disingenuous arguments than most of the crowd he ran with.

Also, regarding this Christian/Muslim violence ratio noise, keep in mind that Christians stopped killed over religion as the Enlightenment spread; in the places where the Enlightenment have yet to saturate the culture, we see many Christians acting in the manner that Christians often behaved before the Enlightenment hit. Odd, eh? Maybe this is another case for the Little Green Footballs Street Irregulars!

One of the "funny" things about militias is their rhetoric about saving us all from tyranny by nobly standing up to govt. As if these simpletons with their (largely homemade) private arsenals had the ability to stand up to law enforcement, the National Guard and the US military.

And then when their plans are exposed, it's nothing more than standard issue chickenshit terrorism--kill a cop and blow shit up. What courage in the face of tyranny.

I sorta wonder about that. Because they can't intellectually believe that they can stand up to the US. I think what it is, it's like a power fantasy, like what kids have, why they read comic books, why they like stories about kids like them with magical powers, Harry Potter, and so on.

But some people, they just sorta get further into a power fantasty, and they don't come out, and thus we have militias. All the fantasies about society breaking down, we'll kick ass, we've got guns, we'll be the saviors and the badass dudes from movie X with the compound. It sounds pretty cool It must be bewitching and really exciting when you're around all these other guys who believe the same thing.

I think some of them end at the "let's play pretend in the forest" sort of thing, and then the creepy, really creepy ones who really start to believe their own rhetoric, they become dangerous, because they're surrounded by fanatics as well, there's nobody to tell them they can't.

Anyway, just waking up. Thoughts!

This is outrageous! It's finally gone too far! What's next? I can hear it now:

AP Exclusive: The Obama Administration has announced plans to take overall control of Major League Baseball. Robert Gibbs was quoted as saying: "Our first step will be to Nationalize the American league, followed immediately by Americanizing the National league. Reporters were stunned."

Funny...but how will that affect the rule for the Designated Banter?

How exactly is Kristol's comment not applicable to the situation outside of Russia? You have an isolated city filled with Muslims, surrounded by a state attempting to quell the violence there. re: #337 Barrett Brown

So, I left this comment in the other thread without realizing that everyone had run off already and that I was essentially talking to myself, except this time on the internet. Here is my comment again, then:

First off, I'd like to briefly note that the two commentators that whom I first point to as being incompetent and thus in need of amplified criticism are Thomas Friedman and Charles Krauthammer, one of whom is a liberal and one of whom is the other a conservative, and both of whom while both are fairly moderate in the degree of their partisanship. Based on this and perhaps the people who get their own chapters in my book [rewrite needed! --ed.] - Friedman (liberal), Krauthammer (conservative), Richard Cohen (liberal), William Bennett (conservative), Martin Peretz (liberal), Robert Stacy McCain (conservative white supremacist), - it has been alleged by a couple of people that my project must necessarily be noticeably partisan in nature. Well done, guys.

Of course, I do end up going after more conservatives than liberals in my general output, which has been media criticism. I do so because it is easier. [not a flattering admission. --ed.] See above, for instance. There's a lot of nonsense that goes on at liberal blogs, but it absolutely pales in comparison to that which goes on at conservative ones. My criticism, like Charles' Charles's, is generally targeted at hypocrisy, intellectual dishonesty, demonstrably untrue assertions, and anti-intellectualism, rather than something to do with an actual partisan divide on an issue such as health care. See the reaction Charles received from his former allies over the past two years or so of messy breakup. Charles hasn't changed much on issues; it just so happened that he had less tolerance for racism and hyper-nationalism and superstition and disingenuous arguments than most of the crowd he ran with.

Also, regarding this Christian/Muslim violence ratio noise, keep in mind that Christians stopped killed over religion as the Enlightenment spread; in the places where the Enlightenment have has yet to saturate the culture, we see many Christians acting in the manner that like Christians often behaved before the Enlightenment hit. Odd, eh? Maybe this is another case for the Little Green Footballs Street Irregulars! [where did you get that stupid name? --ed.]

Please see my offer of expert editing for your project on the previous thread. If you seriously intend to take down the Friedmans, Krauthammers, etc., you're going to need it, and I say that with all due respect.

1. Kristol should watch his mouth. Nearly forty civilians are dead, and whatever Russia's sins, and they are many, nobody on the Moscow Metro deserved to be murdered in a terrorist attack.

2. Russia's record in Chechnya is horrible, and bears no resemblance to Israel's record in Gaza.

3. In most other ways, the two situation bear no resemblance to one another, historically or militarily.

I will weigh in just enough to say I cannot stand Kristol. :D

I also think that to call Chechnyans "islamic terrorists" sorta blames the situation on Islam, which I think is way off base. It's complicated enough that it made my eyes glaze over trying to follow it, so it's probably a little more complex than that!

Correct. I am a atheist, and there will be 14 people over here tonight celebrating Passover, in varying degrees of Jewishness, some Jews, some gentiles, some atheist and a pagan or two. 512 I Am Kreniigh!  Mon, Mar 29, 2010 1:27:04pm

I've recently been reading an interesting comic called DMZ from DC's Vertigo imprint. From Wikipedia:

The series is set in New York City, sometime in the near future and in the midst of a civil war that has turned the island of Manhattan into a demilitarized zone.

The conflict concerns two primary forces: the federal government of the United States of America and the "Free States" armies. In issue #8, it is explained that the Free States are less a geographical entity than "an idea", and that the movement began with an uprising of secessionist groups that formed a separate government in Montana before spreading across the country. The Free Armies and the U.S. military first met in combat at Allentown, Pennsylvania where the Free Armies won, after which the Free Armies descended on New York. The exact chain of events from hereon has yet to be revealed. Manhattan is the location of the DMZ between the two warring parties, with the FSA occupying territory including New Jersey and inland, and the United States holding Brooklyn, Long Island, and other parts unknown.

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

The series started in 2005, so it's not directly inspired by the past year, but it does resonate.

re: #512 Kreniigh

No it doesn't. That's a bunch of hyperbole on your part. The situation framed in that comic has nothing to do with the reality of the religious militia movement, with it's actual size and it's impact.

These sorts of groups, while dangerous, are not organized in any meaningful way that could create a nationwide revolution.

Do you know anything personally about how these groups operate?

Hmm. This is interesting:

[Link: www.annarbor.com...]

Bridgewater Township Supervisor Jolea Mull has twice sought help from militia members this year to search for missing township residents.

The move is drawing criticism from militia watchdog groups, who say Mull is legitimizing an extreme right-wing movement that has a history of being associated with criminal activity.

And the partnership comes as the militia movement is exploding across the country, driven by fears of economic collapse and the potential for a crackdown on gun rights under the Obama administration, watchdog groups say.

About 50 militia members from five units live in Washtenaw County, militia leaders say. They are survivalists, who favor larger local government and a smaller federal government. Members are fiercely protective of their free speech and gun rights.

When Mull learned from Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies that a township woman was missing Jan. 13, she contacted local militia leader Jimmy Schiel.

“She said, ‘Hey, we need help to do a ground search for Anna-Maria Wheeker,” Schiel recalls of their phone conversation that morning. “I said, ‘So you want the militia?' And she said, ‘Yes.”

Schiel, a member of the Washtenaw County-based Michigan Militia Corps Wolverines, 9th Division, 13th Brigade, started making phone calls. He quickly rounded up three members from his unit and three from the Lenawee County-based Hutaree, 8th Division, 20th Brigade.

They responded to the township hall with two search dogs, backpacks containing medical supplies and a non-militia volunteer on horseback. They met with deputies, firefighters and other volunteers before fanning out in the area to search for Wheeker.

Meh. The same was true of religion and politics, no?

No, religion used to be quite public. Then the dreaded "Christian cooties" epidemic began, and we had to take in out of the public square... Politics is as ubiquitous as it ever was.

I was interested to see whether the first post would be about the "threat" of violence with the militia group or the "actual" violence of the jihadists in Moscow. Although it is of interest and worth blogging about, I am disappointed that the focus of the site is clearly now on internal fringe groups that have not yet carried out violence and hardly anything at all on the actual violence of militant Islam and its relentless aim of continuing that actual violence on the West. I for one however believe that the focus should be the other way around.

I also learned that Stormfront types are really, really, really sad about this state of affairs.

I think a massive government move against a real and present domestic terrorist cell with sedition charges trumps another, albeit horrible, attack by Chechen rebels. There were also probably attacks in Iraq & Afghanistan today but this is a big deal.

He was on a Northwest flight and was taken into custody by US law enforcement on the ground in Detroit. He attempted to detonate as they were approaching Detroit.

I would think civilian as well, but much of the right-wing blogosphere went into cardiac arrest over the very idea, much to my confusion and disgust.

Christianity used to be quite public. A certain kind of Christianity. Everyone else stayed quiet.

There was no 'Christian cooties' epidemic, merely an end to a public presumption of Protestant social status.

See, the order of importance is like this:

2. Terrorists who ARE Muslims.

1. What Charles decides to post about, and what that says about the direction this blog has taken.

Write it down or something!

More like the Sizzleroos nueter. /

They had announced and were setting up the plane interior for landing at Detroit Michigan. It was Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on December 25, 2009. He was supposed to inject acid into the powdered PETN explosive sewn into a packet in his briefs causeing it to explode. Instead the acid melted the syringe and caught it and the waistband of his underwear on fire. The "pop" that the passengers heard and likened to a firecracker going off was the syringe exploding while he was holding it over his crotch with his pants pulled down enough to expose the packet sewn into the front of his briefs.

Ace was just commenting on the fact that private militias like the folks in the OP are illegal here suggesting that basically there was nothing really stopping folks here from doing similar things and just not saying they're an actual militia. "Just guys hanging out with guns in the woods'.

I just was using the 'unofficial' descriptor in a legal sense.

It's not the militia itself that's illegal. It's the plot to kill cops and blow shit up.

You would put Robert Stacy McCain alongside those others? While there may be ample reason to intellectually disagree with the first five they are all serious intellects. RSM is a white supremacist whack-job in nice clothes.

As is explained in the book, R.S. McCain is included therein not due to his intellect, but rather due to his continued employment by various conservative outlets, the editors of which have chosen to simply ignore the ongoing revelations regarding the fellow's views and lack of journalistic ethics. The chapter dealing with him is more about the state of the modern conservative movement than it is about the deficits of a single fellow.

Also, I disagree with you regarding the others being "serious intellects;" they are well-known and are regarded by many as being such, but after having gone over their respective bodies of work, I have trouble viewing them as particularly intellectual. Peretz and Krauthammer are both smart fellows who have memorized quite a bit, but they would not last very long in any situation in which they were forced to answer for their respective mistakes - a blog-based debate, for instance.

I follow what you're attempting to say, but I also know that he regards himself as a moderate liberal, which is why he participated in a forum entitled "Liberal hawks reconsider the Iraq War" knowing full well what the forum was called. You may be aware that the term "moderate" is often used as a qualifier to both "liberal" and "conservative" and that a large number of people self-identify as moderates of one or the other.

These militia members were planning terrorist attacks. They are dangerous, and know people who are dangerous. Would Republicans favor torturing these militia members? Or would Republicans favor granting them the presumption of innocence?

659 acacia  Tue, Mar 30, 2010 5:30:05am

re: #658 Ming

Good point. I think that with an American citizen on American soil you have to treat it as a crime no matter what even if planning a terrorist act. If it's a foreign citizen or an American citizen on foreign soil who plans an attack, then it is an act of war and you don't have to treat it as a crime but process it like you would a combatant and in those cases they wouldn't have the Geneva protections because they are not uniformed combatants. In either case though torture should never be used, period. Of course the million dollar question is where is the line between aggressive interrogation and torture. I don't know the answer to that.
