Because it's a detail showing the section fouled by oil. There's a link to the full image too, but be warned that it's very large.

Do you believe the POTUS told a Kyl that he would not secure the border to keep it as a bargaining chip or that Kyl lies to some Tea Partiers ?
"Earlier we reported that Senator Jon Kyl had publicly claimed during Tea Party Town Hall meeting, that President Obama had privately told the Arizona Senator that the administration was effectively not securing the U.S. border with Mexico so as to gain the necessary political leverage to enact immigration reform. Kyl’s account of this private conversation in the Oval Office has since been harshly rebuked by the White House, claiming “the President didn’t say that and Senator Kyl knows it.” Kyl’s spokesman has already countered the WH rebuke.
White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer released the following response to the Kyl’s accusation:
“The President didn’t say that and Senator Kyl knows it. There are more resources dedicated toward border security today than ever before, but as the President has made clear, truly securing the border will require a comprehensive solution to our broken immigration system.”

might as well drop the legalese and go with the pretense that illegals are now legal, and the border will stay open permanently...I'm getting tired of the whole issue...let the Mexicans and all the rest pour over here as they please, at least that's the reality of it...any plan short of that is for morons and racists

Supreme Court upholds terrorism support law
In a victory for the Obama administration, the justices voted, 6-3, to reverse a ruling by a U.S. appeals court that declared parts of the law unconstitutionally vague.
The law barring material support was first adopted in 1996 and strengthened by the USA Patriot Act adopted by Congress right after the September 11 attacks. It was amended again in 2004.
The law bars knowingly providing any service, training, expert advice or assistance to any foreign organization designated by the U.S. State Department as terrorist.
The law, which carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison, does not require any proof the defendant intended to further any act of terrorism or violence by the foreign group.

Cromulent? I tried three dictionaries and didn't find that word. What does it mean?
Simpsons reference. It means 'legitimate', but in a snarky kind of way, since the word itself is not legitimate.

might as well drop the legalese and go with the pretense that illegals are now legal, and the border will stay open permanently...I'm getting tired of the whole issue...let the Mexicans and all the rest pour over here as they please, at least that's the reality of it...any plan short of that is for morons and racists
I was just curious if we had anyone here thought Obama would make such a statement as Kyl claimed. If true, I'd agree with many of the right wing blogs that it could well be a impeachable offense. To say you are not securing the border in order to gain a political bargaining chip certainly rises to that level.
BTW, I don't believe Kyl and hope the WH will call him out. Even if you think the POTUS would risk national security in that matter, would he be stupid enough to tell a GOP congressman ? I feel it's far more likely Kyl thinks Obama would do that and shared it with the tea party folks.

Jebediah Springfield: I was- wha... what are you talking about, Shelbyville? Why would we want to marry our cousins?
Shelbyville Manhattan: Because they're so attractive. I... I thought that was the whole point of this journey.
Jebediah Springfield: Absolutely not!
Shelbyville Manhattan: I tell you, I won't live in a town that robs men of the right to marry their cousins!

The cheapest solution is to the border problem is to just tank the US economy so that illegals have no more incentive to come here and nobody has any money to buy illicit drugs imported from Mexico.
When we are all snorting home-made meth and fighting over sub-minimum sage jobs, it will be the Mexicans who have to secure their border...

A couple of things to point out about this photo.
1. Please do take the time to click the link and look at the full hi res photo from NASA. The extent of the polluted zone extends much further south than you might expect - and even the NASA photo crops to the south.
2. The noticeable thick swirls in the gulf are merely especially high concentrations of the oil and dispersant mixture. All that water that should be blue, but isn't, has a surface layer of oil on it. All that greyish area is oil. You are looking at a polluted zone overall that is on the surface, substantially larger than the state of Florida.
3. Notice a dimpling in the middle of the layer. You are seeing to different large scale flows. The Southern whirl is the more important one in the long term. Notice that in the full picture, it extends further South than the tip of Florida and that it will be carried into the Atlantic. In the next few (1-6, depending on where you are) months, this will affect the mid Atlantic and the entire US eastern seaboard.
4. This is only the oil on the surface layers. There is vastly more oil that is contained in plumes beneath the surface.
5. The consequences in short term economic cost to lost fishing and use of beach fronts will be in the billions. However, that is insignificant compared to the long term depression of global food supply and long term ecological damage.
6. The largest part of the ecological damage will be accelerated ocean anoxia over large regions of the sea. As microbes eat the oil, they burn dissolved oxygen in the water. This may sound like good news at first. However, fish need to breathe too. That is what their gills are for. As oxygen is sucked out of the water multi-cellular life suffer mass deaths. That means that our already dwindling fisheries, will not be coming back anytime soon. Perhaps after truly massive clean up attempts - that we do not yet know how to do, we can re-seed the affected regions. That, however is a very long term and multi-billion dollar proposition. It is nearly certain that we have caused the extinction of some species.

First cousins once removed have 50% more uncommon genetic material than first cousins.
While still a little closely related, it is not even close to the dangers of first cousins marrying.
As to Einstein's taste in women, his long time friend and colleague Abraham Pais, also a Nobel Laureate in physics, wrote:
"Einstein liked his women common and sweaty. The more common and the more sweaty, the better." Al, may have been one of the greatest geniuses in history, but he did not have exceptional relationship skills or taste.

I'm 57 now, still haven't found a full time programming job. Did some off and on contract work, and still work from home occasionally for Kaiser.
I been told off the record, "ageism" all the way. So now, I work part time as a cashier at a large supermarket chain up here in the Rocky Mountains... enjoying the job a whole lot, nice people, and I am such a pussycat working with the public... but I still wouldn't mind getting back in my career. I still apply, over 500 apps in 5 years, but rarely ever even a phone interview.
Happened to my dad, too. He got a retirement package from BP, and a good thing too. He was already about 60 and no one would hire him.

And, this was COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE.
It's sounding like shortcuts were taken, and bad decisions made.
It's sickening.

I laughed very loudly from that, to the point that the rest of the office here is asking me "what's so funny?". +1 to you! On that note, y'all have a great evening, hope to chat tomorrow!

Thanks. Maybe under that cloud. Weather sat image-So the fleet is not visible. But just awful; how can that be anything but devastating? And a bunch of methane released.
Love to see a really high res shot like 1 meter resolution released. See the fleet from above.

I suspect a lot of us live in the frame of that hi-res photo. My town is under cloud cover in the upper right quadrant.

Well... my wife at the time, who was use to me making about 86,000 a year... wasn't happy with the programming job I got in two months after being laid off... it only paid 43,000 a year... so within 7 months she decided to boogy... I had to take an early out on the retirement package I had from the Lab... and it eat most of that up trying to get reestablished in an apartment, furniture and so on... and then I had to dip into it off on on for the last 5 years between the piddlely little jobs I had... ergo... no personal retirement funds...

Same here, my last full-time job was a contract at Ford Motor Co. in 2007. I'm 60.
I have the Zionist Mall, but sales are down from last year. I don't think it has anything to do with the BDS, people just aren't spending. Buy Israeli products!
Summer is normally a bit slower then the rest of the year for vintage clothes but this is the worst June I (and my competitors) have ever had.
April and May ended up being pretty good and then things just tanked.
Sales and traffic are way down and my international sales (which are normally about 1/2 my business) are almost non-existent.

Considering our litigious society, are we, the over fifty society, too adverse to legal action because of our upbringing? I mean are we too willing to suck up adversity, accept ownership of misfortune, even internalize it as if it were our fault (although we know it is not so) rather than seek legal remedies? I had as a model my dad who did not rail against misfortune but did what he could to minimize its effects.I don't know.

Ohh shortcuts were not just taken, multiple critical red flags that should have halted production were ignored. The story seems very very solid that BP execs wanted the oil NOW and ordered people against their better judgement to do utterly stupid things despite the obvious red flags.
And let's be clear about the obvious red flags:
1. Chunks of a critical sealing ring had come up the pipe. This was a mission critical piece of equipment that was known to have failed.
2. The other parts of emergency shut off were either broken completely, or mis-configured. The mis-configured part was attached to a dead power supply.
3. Rather than using three concrete plugs, they drilled with two before releasing pressure and draining out the mud. The plugs that were in place were sub-standard anyway.
The important thing to take from this is that corporations with a model of maximal greed for this quarter's bottom line have no incentive to regulate themselves. We have seen this abused again and again in recent times. This however, is only the most dramatic and catastrophic failure of this sort. The GOP mantra that corporations will act responsibly with the public trust and do not need to be regulated is completely false. It was always stupid. Enron and the SNL crisis were not sufficient. However, there is now very graphic and catastrophic damage that we have not even begun to feel the full sting of as evidence, that believing such things is utterly stupid and the cost is in terms of lives and livelihoods. The GOP still does not really care so much about that. After all, Barton, Bachman, Palin, Inhofe and others would rather line their pockets than protect Americans.

"Einstein liked his women common and sweaty. The more common and the more sweaty, the better." Al, may have been one of the greatest geniuses in history, but he did not have exceptional relationship skills or taste.
No, Albert had a good nose for potential breeding parters.
There was a study that showed how human "pheremones" work: those people whose smell we find the most attractive are the ones who have immune characteristcs that compliment ours, leading to healthier offspring.
I often look back and wonder how my ex and I even got together, much less stayed together long enough to have four kids, but one thing I recall is that she never smelled bad to me.

Einsteins son in law was David Fairchild, a world explorer of plants.
Wonderful books of his travels.
He introduced many of the fruits & vegies we enjoy, to the US.

Such shots exist, but, over that scale are terabyte files. I have seen such shots, but you won't see them blogged.

Because it's a detail showing the section fouled by oil. There's a link to the full image too, but be warned that it's very large.
Actually, you are only closing in on the most dense swirls. All the water that is that grayish color instead of blue is fouled by the oil. That region extends far far to the south and east and west compared to your zoom in. It even extends further south than this NASA photo.
