I think the only time I was near the Pearl recently (powells doesn't count!) was to see the Burning Man documentary at Cinema 21, I'm all about the SE Portland, give me some bars on Division, gimme my dive bars

When i think The Pearl, I think of the upscale boutiques and restaurants and the warehouse stores for the ultra-hip and the folks who make serious bank. ;-) Which, ya know, cool, I've been to a couple of Pearl district restaurants that I've liked, but it's really not my scene at all.

Hey everyone,

Still in Shanghai for another week or so. Just something funny I had to mention...

There are very few sites in English that are blocked by "The great firewall of China", mostly because they really don't care if foreigners look at stuff on the internet. Most people in China speak only Chinese. For example: I'm currently freely accessing LGF. As political as LGF can be, it isn't blocked.

The funny thing is this: summerseale.com is blocked.

Something written there must have seriously pissed them off. =)

Yay.

Mississippi Rep. Gene Taylor (D) on Nancy Pelosi:

“As much as I dislike Gingrich, and I do, when that guy realized that he was a drag on his party, he walked away.”

She ain't walking away. There is still more destruction she has to do to her party still.

Pelosi is having a bad week. Here's another Dem letting her know how he feels...

Just-defeated Rep. Allen Boyd (D-Fla.) rose in Tuesday’s caucus meeting to declare that Pelosi is “the face of our defeat.” He told his soon-to-be-former colleagues that “we need new leadership.” His sentiments, a stinging blow for Pelosi because her camp sought his vocal support after he lost, were seconded by other lawmakers who were defeated and by some who won reelection, according to attendees.

In the "you couldn't make it up" category, check out the Palin girls slagging off other kids on Facebook who didn't like Mom's TV show. My favorite one is where Bristol tells some guy, "You'll be as successful as my baby daddy."

Not everything is epic, shitheads.

The word "epic" is one of the most misused and overused filler words in the English language.

If you have used the word out of context, which means any time since 2008, you should stop whatever it is you're doing and start plowing fields, because you lack the ability to form language that doesn't involve mimicking others, and are therefore a cow.

The word epic should only be used to describe two or three things, ever. In fact, here's a comprehensive list of all things epic:

NSFW, obviously.

Bill Nye of 'the Science Guy' fame collapses during speech at USC [Updated]

[Updated at 10:52 p.m.: Tristan Camacho, a USC senior who attended the lecture, said Nye was walking toward the podium when he collapsed mid-sentence. "Then after about 10 seconds, he popped back up with much gusto and asked everybody how long he was out for and went on with a story about how a similar thing happened to him that morning."

Nye appeared determined to finish his presentation, but began slurring his words and stumbled against his laptop, Camacho said. At first, Nye refused the offer of a chair and continued taking sips from a water bottle. Camacho said Nye was eventually removed from the stage.

I've been thinking about this all day. I was listening to this clip from Glenn Beck's radio show today. A young woman called in to the show. She was an Iraq war veteran, I'm guessing early to mid 20s. She was invited by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America to march in a Veterans Day parade in DC. She told Glenn how great the organization treated her and how great her experience was. Yet, she came home and learned that Moveon.dot org was a sponsor of the parade. Therefore she was shocked. She told Glenn that she was so terrified, because George Soros was taking over our military. I feel so sorry for her. She's been brainwashed by this evil piece of shit Beck. Fuck Him. I wish there was a hell for Beck to go to, but I am an atheist. I wish as much misery on him as humanly possible.

re: #92 mdey

Yet, she came home and learned that Moveon.dot org was a sponsor of the parade.

Beck's a world class POS that stokes the flames of people's fears and prejudices. Every day, it seems I run into someone who can't wait to share the most recent "fact" they've picked up from watching Fox News, as though they're sharing classified information only known to other Fox News viewers. Presumably, the rest of us are walking in a daze, unaware of the perils posed by the likes of Soros, Obama, Muslims, feminists, and assorted ne'er do wells, so they're eager to enlighten us. However, their fact checking ends at their television's remote control, and they remain content to feed at that fever swamp, with the occasional mad dash to World Net Daily when they can no longer internalize their hate, fear, and loathing of anyone not them.

It is probably more frightening than illuminating, if and when they ever figure out people who aren't them share many of the same passions and concerns, and this includes supporting those who serve in the military with more than lip service like randomly tagging "God bless the troops!" to the ends of statements, like periods.

The best way to counter the Fox News mentality is for groups, particularly the Democrats, and MoveOn.Org, to mobilize and show their support for common causes. In the past, the Democrats have been their own worst enemy, because they choose to remain silent about the causes and ideals that bind people together. Also, they haven't framed their message in crayon, as Fox News has.

Fox panders to the lowest common denominator, and has effected a movement of fearful, raging, idiots that aren't encumbered by critical thinking. As a fellow atheist, I agree I wish there was a special hell for Fox, and people like Beck, because their contempt for facts and love for hysteria have stifled rational thinking, and quite intentionally detached their base from reality.

A gentle suggestion, from one who has several family members and friends that live in various cities in our state: Don't prejudge your neighbors and possible new friends in those "Red" regions, you just might get to like some of them if you try.

Our solution is for undertrained, underpaid and undermotivated drones to take over security tasks. We get what we pay for.

Okay...aside from my gut-level dislike of possible profiling, this sounds like a fairly painless way to get through airport security.

[Link: www.thestar.com...]

Yes

"We" are looking for guns/explosives/weapons

The Israelis look for terrorists (and yes, that does mean a degree of profiling,,, but they are also looking at body language,, eye movements,, etc,,)

183 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Wed, Nov 17, 2010 6:08:05am

re: #174 darthstar

Pardon me for interjecting in ignorance, but isn't "scale" relevant?

Ben Gurion International Airport -- 10.9 million passengers
O'Hare International Airport 63.5 million passengers
Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport 88 million passengers

Added to that it appears that their screeners would need to have degrees in psychology.

Have you met a TSA employee?

re: #180 ralphieboy

So, in order to have highly trained and sufficiently compensated airport security, the costs would probably be passed on to the flier, or even more government spending. That would go over like a lead balloon.

For some reason, the unwritten rule is we should be able to have all this high tech shit and services, so long as no one pays for it.

How do the Israelis pay for it?

In some ways their screening is less invasive than ours. Remember, they're looking for behavioral anomalies, not looking into every grandmothers purse. And yes, their volume is smaller but scale wise (population/ travelers/ area) it's on a par with us

2.) need a gobs and gobs more than Israel uses right now
Again,, we have a much larger population ( and military). Proportion
3.) who pays for it?
Same as now,, airline fees and taxes

Non passengers aren't allowed beyond a certain point in airports here now, so you would only be adding one layer (at the entrance) and again, that can be done observationally!

I can only suspect that the Israelis, on top of their better training, are highly motivated (cannot say anything about relative pay/benefits scales)

The Israeli security people know what depends on their doing a good job. We hire people whose main motivation is to get through a shift without incident and without being taken to task for violating rules or procedure.

And yes, we need to employ a form of profiling, namely terroist profiling. Which is a lot more complex and nuanced than simple racial profiling which is a cheap cop-out for the undertrained.

[Link: www.cnn.com...]

Washington (CNN) -- The head of the Transportation Security Administration will likely get a pat-down on air-travel security measures as he testifies before Congress on Wednesday morning.

The appearance by John Pistole was scheduled before controversy broke out over the past week about the agency's full body scans and pat-downs. But protest movements about the searches make such questioning likely when Pistole testifies about his agency's security efforts before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Hero pilot Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger on Tuesday joined the opposition to heightened airport security procedures, which critics have called invasive.

Sullenberger, who landed a crippled US Airways jet on the Hudson River last year, said the use of full-body pat-downs and advanced imaging scanners for airline personnel "just isn't an efficient use of our resources."

I used to travel quite a bit in the US. And my carry on was sometimes quite valuable. Product samples for jewelry making can be like that. After 9/11 and since I can no longer control my bag as required by insurance. Thefts and losses in the process are common. Now we do this differently, or will when the economy gets better and the travel makes sense for profit. Before 9/11 private security was easy to deal with. After 9/11 TSA was always cool with me. I got used to secondary screening all the time. No biggie.

This tsa hearing is silly and pointless. The aren't really discussing anything important.

With these sorts of hearings, very often the folks conducting the hearings know what points they want to make, they've collected information and discussed with staff and other politicians with the same viewpoint they have, and it's already been decided who will bring up what point and who will ask what questions, and they probably also already have a pretty good idea what the answers will be.

The real discussions go on behind the scenes.

I haven't been keeping up with this issue as much as some people, since I don't give two shits what they do at the security checkpoints, this is not a problem for me...

But...

Has there been any comments from the TSA on Cair's statements that woman wearing a full body covering remind the TSA agents that they are NOT to be patted down below the neck?

The only thing I can find is a video of Janet N. NOT answering the question.

re: #116 Obdicut

How do, Obdi.

While I haven't read an excessive number, the best accessible one I know of is:

The Forging of the Union

This one is a bit drier, but useful:

The Creation of the American Republic

And if there is ANY intellectual curiosity in your recipient, these are pretty essential:

The Debates in the Federal Convention of 1787.... (Madison)
Federalists and Antifederalists

Peripherally useful for context, and great reads::
A Son of Thunder (Patrick Henry bio)
Patriots, by A.L. Langguth

This isn't exactly the kind of subject easily reduced to "primer" status, as we have all seen in observing politics in the last several years....I'm not terribly convinced that overly simplistic "guides" to the Constitution are useful. (I think the Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers should be required reading in high schools, but I'm a radical that way....)

I guess that makes me an intellectual elitist..../

Hope these help somewhat.

Economists say food crisis prediction from Beck's inflation expert is "crazy"

Economists tell Media Matters that they've "never heard" of the organization Glenn Beck has cited to fearmonger over a coming "food crisis," and mocked the group's conclusion that massive inflation in food prices is imminent.

Last week, Beck repeatedly used his Fox News show to hype predictions from the "credible people" at the National Inflation Association (NIA) of a coming "food crisis." Beck cited NIA's forecast of huge increases in the cost of food staples, which Beck has said is a result of both the Federal Reserve's efforts at quantitative easing, and George Soros' supposed sinister plot to devalue the dollar for his own personal gain.

Dean Baker, the co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, said he's "never heard" of NIA, but told Media Matters their conclusions are ridiculous on their face: "Inflation is falling, not rising, this is crazy." Josh Bivens of the Economic Policy Institute agreed, saying that he's "definitely never heard of them," but that based on their forecast, "no one would say they're a group you'd look to for serious analysis."

It puts the counter Jihad bloggers in a tough spot. They'll probably start to shift from counter jihad writing to more of a nativist/ethnic nationalist type thing if they want to survive on the right.

The WSJ article is talking about possible food price inflation of 2-3%, and how this will hurt Applebee's, if people "trade down" to Burger King or stop eating out as much. Their fear (of falling consumption) is caused by lack of demand as much as the increase in grain prices (which is itself driven, it seems, by increasing consumption in China).

Beck is talking about loaves of bread costing $25.

New from Alex Jones.....

One of the most disturbing, which is subject to an ongoing lawsuit, involved a 21-year-old college student from Amarillo Texas. The woman was passing through security at Corpus Christi airport on May 29 2008 when she was subjected to “extended search procedures” by the TSA.

“As the TSA agent was frisking plaintiff, the agent pulled the plaintiff’s blouse completely down, exposing plaintiffs’ breasts to everyone in the area,” the lawsuit said. “As would be expected, plaintiff was extremely embarrassed and humiliated.”

TSA workers continued to laugh and joke about the incident “for an extended period of time,” leaving the woman distraught and needing to be consoled. After the woman re-entered the boarding area, TSA workers continued to humiliate her over the incident.

Drudge already has it posted under the headline "TSA Hit With Lawsuits As Revolt Explodes..."

Missing military jet 'believed to be crashed,' Pentagon says

Washington (CNN) -- An Alaska-based Air Force F-22 that went missing on a training mission is "believed to be crashed," a Pentagon spokesman said Wednesday.

Col. Dave Lapan did not immediately give other details about the situation.

The aircraft lost contact with air traffic control Tuesday evening, officials from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson at Anchorage, Alaska, said Wednesday.

Gary Strasburg, an Air Force spokesman, told CNN that a pilot was in the single-seat aircraft during a routine training mission.

Contact was lost with the F-22 at 7:40 p.m. Alaska time (11:40 p.m. ET) on Tuesday.
