Also, what is the point of putting gop.com on the bottom of it? Are there seriously people too stupid to find the GOP website online, who need the aid of a Christmas ornament?
They’ll be sitting at the computer, tinsel trickling down their tree, whale oil-lamp burning, as they can’t figure out how the hell to find the GOP’s website— until finally their eye alights on this precious ornament with the website discretely embossed at the bottom?

At least they have the sacred Indian elephant on there…
“As the Gods ( ‘Deva’) and the demons ( ‘Asura’) churned the oceans during ‘sagar manthan’ ( sagar = sea ; manthan = churning ) for the elixir of life - ‘amrit’ ( nectar ) that would make them immortal , there surfaced the ‘navratnas’ ( nine jewels ). One of these jewels was the elephant. The elephant is, therefore, considered absolutely precious to be preserved and protected like the way jewels are.”
“In one of her dreams, Buddha’s mother dreamt of a white elephant. And then the prophet of peace Gautam Buddha was born. Obviously, therefore, a white elephant in India’s cultural context can never connotate redundancy, as it would in the West.”
“And then comes the greatest of all ‘vahanas’ (carriages for Gods) - the ‘Airavat’ ( elephant ). The Airavat was the chosen carriage for the God of all Gods ‘ Indra ’. There were other Gods as well riding on elephants as well, but Indra’s airavat was special. It was regal in size and had ten tusks, not just the usual two.”
In a way it makes total sense, considering how much the Republicans have been supporting outsourcing of American jobs to Indian, they of course would want to let their “overseas constituents” know that they honor their religion also…

There is something neat about the ease on the eyes of the e-ink tech. I am totally convinced after spending an hour with one thata Kindle (or clone) is the way to go if your primary use case is just reading books.
Plus the battery life benefits are nice too. It only uses power when redrawing the screen.

Warning: True Christmas Story
i spent christmas at the home of my college girlfriend many years ago when i was young (back in the civil war era). they all gathered around the christmas tree and brought out all the family christmas ornaments one by one, each one with a family story. finally, at the bottom of the box there were two worn down, shapeless ornaments that had not totally survived the ravages of time. they were also so old that they family didn’t even know where they came from anymore, so they didn’t have a family story like the rest. nevertheless, they were lovingly brought out and hung up on the tree like all the others

Well… just before the Touch 4g came out a few months ago… I found the 2g’s on sale for about 20 dollars off at Staples (I thought Apple products are never discounted… anyway)… I had a few extra hours at the store, so, I splurged and purchased it… I am amazed and totally satisfied… I haven’t really kept up with Apple products in the least (did use a mini-mac at the theatre to run the show control software)… but… all I can say is I’m amazed.
For under 50 dollars, I’ve loaded this thing up with so many useful (and not so useful) apps, it’s almost like you could velcro this thing to the palm of your hand and “rule” your world from a device that is the size of a pocket note book.

Yes you do :) I don’t know. Like I said above, I just got the Touch two months ago, and I am totally blown away by it. ANd of course, that make you think about… “Gee… wouldn’t this be even more fun and functional on a Ipad” Well, I was sitting next to a passenger on a plane last month who had an Ipad, and he was watching some episodes of some TV shows. It seemed a little bulky… and I saw some people at the airport holding them in their hands trying to use them sort of like a Iphone or Touch, and that seemed uncomfortable.
So, as much as I’m intrigued by the Ipad, the portability and “pocketbility” of a Touch sized device certainly has it’s advantages.

(I don’t mind ads, just ones that seem to presume I’m stupid. Of course, there could be some special discount, but I think they would have mentioned it.)

I don’t really follow it. I was just amused by them sending me an email reminding me I can shop at a “special” day. I’m still not sure what makes it special. Clowns in the stores? Apple pie samples? Free t-shirts?
Ipods are discounted on amazon. I just checked.

Someone call the American Family Association. They have to declare war on the GOP.
Drop 50 and fire for effect.
The American Family Association has completely gone off the rails too. Don’t believe me?
We have feminized the Medal of Honor.
According to Bill McGurn of the Wall Street Journal, every Medal of Honor awarded during these two conflicts has been awarded for saving life. Not one has been awarded for inflicting casualties on the enemy. Not one.
Gen. George Patton once famously said, “The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other guy die for his.”
When we think of heroism in battle, we used the think of our boys storming the beaches of Normandy under withering fire, climbing the cliffs of Pointe do Hoc while enemy soldiers fired straight down on them, and tossing grenades into pill boxes to take out gun emplacements.
That kind of heroism has apparently become passe when it comes to awarding the Medal of Honor. We now award it only for preventing casualties, not for inflicting them.
So the question is this: when are we going to start awarding the Medal of Honor once again for soldiers who kill people and break things so our families can sleep safely at night?
I would suggest our culture has become so feminized that we have become squeamish at the thought of the valor that is expressed in killing enemy soldiers through acts of bravery. We know instinctively that we should honor courage, but shy away from honoring courage if it results in the taking of life rather than in just the saving of life. So we find it safe to honor those who throw themselves on a grenade to save their buddies.
Jesus, in words often cited in ceremonies such as the one which will take place this afternoon, said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). So it is entirely right that we honor this kind of bravery and self-sacrifice, which is surely an imitation of the Lord of lords and King of kings.
However, Jesus’ act of self-sacrifice would ultimately have been meaningless - yes, meaningless - if he had not inflicted a mortal wound on the enemy while giving up his own life.
Thats right because as we all remember the most often cited quote of Jesus is when he said “So I sayeth unto yea to kill, kill, kill, all those who oppose you, and breaketh things whilst you are doing so!” It comes right after that silly non-christian “Turn the other cheek” heresy.
///sheesh.

My brother and his wife work at Best Buy. The tradition is that they show up to say hello for an hour or two, ,then go home and go to bed at four in the afternoon.
I think one year one of them had to be at work at 2 am, but this is better than being at work on the later shift, because that person has to deal with the people who missed the specials.

Pentagon Alerts House, Senate Panels to New Classified WikiLeaks Release
The Pentagon warned the U.S. Senate and House Armed Services Committees that the website WikiLeaks.org “intends to release several hundred thousand” classified U.S. State Department cables as soon as Nov. 26.
The documents “touch on an enormous range of very sensitive foreign policy issues,” Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs Elizabeth King wrote yesterday in an e-mail to the defense panels.
“We anticipate that the release could negatively impact U.S. foreign relations,” she wrote, telling committee staff members that “we will brief you once we have a better understanding of what documents the WikiLeaks publication contains.”
King said The New York Times, the U.K.’s Guardian and Der Spiegel of Germany “are each currently working with WikiLeaks to coordinate the release of these State Department documents.”

The Nook color looks pretty good, but the I see the $250 price tag and realize I could get a wifi iPad for just twice that. Not that I want an iPad at all, but that’s another story.
Nook color is LCD not e-ink too. It’s much grainer and has a drastically reduced time between rechargings.

Turns out, the “protests” aren’t really materializing. Another case of slactivism, it appears.
Airport screening protest isn’t flying — so far
A loosely organized protest over the use of body scanners that threatened to delay travelers over the holiday weekend has so far failed to materialize at O’Hare International Airport.
Security lines were relatively short and appeared to be moving quickly.
…
The O’Hare situation appeared to be typical of airports around the country, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Airport officials in Atlanta, Denver and New York — among the nation’s most heavily traveled facilities — reported that early crowds were moving easily through checkpoints, with little or no disruptions, the newspaper reported.
It said a handful of screeners actually reported positive feedback from customers as they whisked through security lines.
At O’Hare this morning, Ohio office manager Annie Truman,41, who was on her way to Los Angeles, said the longest line she encountered was for coffee.
Randall Lowe, a 56-year-old contractor from Maine, said he expected a pat-down because his hip replacement always sets off airport metal detectors.
This time the hands-on search was “a little more invasive but nothing that was offensive,” he said.
Darnell Martin, 37, of the Wicker Park neighborhood, who was on his way to visit family in Las Vegas, said he went through the full body scan and wasn’t bothered by it at all. He said he didn’t ask for the pat-down, but that wouldn’t have been a problem either. “I’m going to Vegas,” he joked. “People pay money for that in Vegas.”

Yeah they aren’t really comparable.
E-readers do one thing extremely well. Pads are general-purpose computers that can do more but are less fit for the specific task of serving as a reader. Apples and Oranges.

IMO, it doesn’t get to call itself a computer unless there is a freely-available compiler for the platform, and binaries generated by that compiler can be executed immediately without interference.

That would be my only complaint about the Iproducts… being locked out of the file system… a simple example… I have a BASIC interpreter/compiler app on my Touch… I purchased it because I thought “that’s cute… BASIC on a Touch” But… you can’t get to the “saved” program files… you can write all the little “apps” you want, but you can’t distribute them, or write the scripts off line and upload them to the Touch to run them… so, you have a toy… evidently Apple doesn’t want anyone writing applications that get around their SDK.
I would love to do some development for a Touch, but their SDK ONLY runs on a Mac. Apple wants you behind their “wall” before they let you play with the hardware.
It was that locked out attitude that kept me away from Apple products for so long. I’ve always love the open nature of other platforms.

I stay away from apple because I look at it as a $300 toy that will easily break.
(I have four boys. I know every way things can break.)
A group of boys can be given a ball bearing. 30 minutes later, the ball bearing is broken and no one knows how it happened.

Then I registered a few months after that, then three months later I made a comment. I was so intimidated, the one person who answered me I answered through the email system.

re: #146 Walter L. Newton
Have you tried getting OSX running on your PC? It’s what a couple friends of mine who do iphone ap development do.

And the whole point of those scanners was to eliminate (or vastly reduce) the need for the feelaround.
Yet, they’re the ones who are complaining the loudest, even though the folks who are operating those screeners/checkpoints aren’t to blame for this situation. It’s on Congress and the TSA itself which demanded these kinds of screenings in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and later attempts to blow up airlines with underwear and shoe bombs.
Oh, and this program started under Bush (and at that time the main opposition to these scanners were the ACLU/civil liberties types). Now, you’ve got the right wing throwing opposition not on principle but on politics- they just don’t want the guy in office running things. ODS runs hard and deep with ‘em and it’s not getting any better. In fact, combined with the trooferism nonsense, I’d say it’s getting a whole lot worse because these folks are coming completely unhinged from facts or reality in pursuit of their objective of hating on Obama.

What false meme? That the administration, both itself and through numerous proxies, pushed the meme that we were in imminent danger of being nuked by Iraq?
That’s not a meme. That’s a fact.

re: #233 Fozzie Bear
Here, just ‘cuz I like ya:
The resolution cited many factors to justify the use of military force against Iraq:[2][3]
* Iraq’s noncompliance with the conditions of the 1991 cease fire, including interference with weapons inspectors.
* Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction, and programs to develop such weapons, posed a “threat to the national security of the United States and international peace and security in the Persian Gulf region.”
* Iraq’s “brutal repression of its civilian population.”
* Iraq’s “capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction against other nations and its own people”.
* Iraq’s hostility towards the United States as demonstrated by the alleged 1993 assassination attempt of former President George H. W. Bush, and firing on coalition aircraft enforcing the no-fly zones following the 1991 Gulf War.
* Members of al-Qaeda, an organization bearing responsibility for attacks on the United States, its citizens, and interests, including the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, are known to be in Iraq.
* Iraq’s “continu[ing] to aid and harbor other international terrorist organizations,” including anti-United States terrorist organizations.
* The efforts by the Congress and the President to fight terrorists, and those who aided or harbored them.
* The authorization by the Constitution and the Congress for the President to fight anti-United States terrorism.
* Citing the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, the resolution reiterated that it should be the policy of the United States to remove the Saddam Hussein regime and promote a democratic replacement.
Those are the facts. This…
It’s almost as ridiculous as the US claiming that Iraq was just about to develop nuclear weapons, and thus, we have to invade NOW.
… is a meme that ignores the facts above.

I doubt sincerely Sarah could tell us much of anything about the two Koreas. If you asked her about Thailand’s “border” with Korea, she would tell you that she is worried that Obama isn’t doing enough about it.

Personally, I consider chemical weapons to be WMDs, but that may just be a matter of opinion.
Gladly. Lets break the list down into pieces.
* Iraq’s noncompliance with the conditions of the 1991 cease fire, including interference with weapons inspectors. - clearly true.
* Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction, and programs to develop such weapons, posed a “threat to the national security of the United States and international peace and security in the Persian Gulf region.” - false. No such weapons were found either by inspectors before, or after the invasion. They were alleged to exist, and never found.
* Iraq’s “brutal repression of its civilian population.” - true.
* Iraq’s “capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction against other nations and its own people”. - You can’t use what you don’t have.
* Iraq’s hostility towards the United States as demonstrated by the alleged 1993 assassination attempt of former President George H. W. Bush, and firing on coalition aircraft enforcing the no-fly zones following the 1991 Gulf War. - true, but 10+ years old. Not relevant to regional or global security in 2001 and later. Certainly one hell of a personal grudge, however.
* Members of al-Qaeda, an organization bearing responsibility for attacks on the United States, its citizens, and interests, including the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, are known to be in Iraq. - false, and ridiculously so. There was never any evidence for this claim.
* Iraq’s “continu[ing] to aid and harbor other international terrorist organizations,” including anti-United States terrorist organizations. - once again, there was never e=any evidence for this claim.
* The efforts by the Congress and the President to fight terrorists, and those who aided or harbored them. - irrelevant for obvious reasons.
* The authorization by the Constitution and the Congress for the President to fight anti-United States terrorism. - once again… there was no AQ/Iraq link ever substantiated by evidence,
* Citing the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, the resolution reiterated that it should be the policy of the United States to remove the Saddam Hussein regime and promote a democratic replacement. - hard to argue with this one.
So, what does that leave?
* Iraq’s noncompliance with the conditions of the 1991 cease fire, including interference with weapons inspectors.
* Iraq’s “brutal repression of its civilian population.” - true.
* Iraq’s “willingness to use weapons of mass destruction (that it does not possess) against other nations and its own people”.
* Iraq’s hostility towards the United States as demonstrated by the alleged 1993 assassination attempt of former President George H. W. Bush, and firing on coalition aircraft enforcing the no-fly zones following the 1991 Gulf War.
* Citing the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, the resolution reiterated that it should be the policy of the United States to remove the Saddam Hussein regime and promote a democratic replacement.
If you care to provide substantiation that hasn’t already been totally refuted for the deleted items, go ahead. Otherwise, I ask you if what remains is really sufficient reason for war.

Sliv_the_eli has an excellent minipage.
The official position of the PA is that the Jews have no connection to the Western Wall. That is something like telling Muslims that they have no connection to Mecca.
I wrote this once a while back here:
For those who claim that Israel does not want peace, they really need to consider the Temple mount.
In Judaism, there is only one Temple.
The one in Jerusalem, the one where we believe Abraham took Isaac, the one that was the center of our faith, the place where our Tradition teaches the very presence of G-d manifested itself in the Holy of Holies.
There is no more sacred place to us in the world.
Yet we leave two Mosques squat on top of it.
If the Muslims had ever taken the Vatican and turned it into a Mosque, how long would the Catholics let it remain so if they got it back? How long would Haiga Sophia stay a mosque if the Greeks ever got it back?
How long would the Muslims let there be a Church in Mecca?
Yet,
We leave those structures squat on our holiest site - even when we know it was built specifically to announce Islam’s supremacy over us and all other faiths. I will be clear. I have nothing against mosques, but that one is a painful abomination to my nation.
Yet,
We would rather have peace.
Anyone who thinks that Israel and the Jews have not sacrificed for peace is a fool. We have given our dearest blood.

Remember, one of the peculiar powers of Conservative cultists is to hold two dichotomous ideas to both be true simultaneously. It is, in fact, Orwellian doublethink. They can hate government health care and love Medicare. They can hate Mexican immigrants and like that nice Hispanic family down the street. As far as I know, the chemical weapons in Iraq were all old, and the claim that Saddam was developing them and was in imminent threat was untrue.
Some Republicans pretended that finding old shells meant Bush and Powell’s claim that they knew weapons were being developed was true, but that was completely unrelated.
Some say they lied, others say they were mistaken, some think the weapons are in Syria, but I don’t think anyone has any evidence that the claims of wmd development were true.

Chemical weapons are more inefficient at killing people than conventional explosives are. If chemical weapons are WMDs, then so are artillery shells.
The other portions that were bolded are also known to be untrue. Saddam provided a tiny portion of support for Palestinian terrorism. Saudia Arabia, including members of the House of Saud, have provided far, far more support for terrorism.
Al Queda was the enemy of Saddam Hussein and did not operate in any significant way in Iraq prior to the invasion.
Etc. etc.

Remember, a Saudi prince, Alwaleed bin Talal, owns a fair share of New Corp, and has already exerted pressure on Fox to minimize some reportage during the aftermath of 9/11.
Fox is trying to compromise the security of the United States and then Beck and company will blame all of it on the Jews.

Anyone who thinks that Israel and the Jews have not sacrificed for peace is a fool. We have given our dearest blood.
Sadly, we shall continue to have to do so. I am reminded of a conversation I had shortly after the 2006 Lebanon War began with an elderly cousin, since deceased, who lived in Haifa. When I telephoned to ask how she was holding up in the face of Hizb-allah’s rocket barrage, she resignedly told me that she was “Fine. It has always been this way, and always will be. We are used to it.” Golda Meir’s lament remains true and, as the PA reaffirmed, will sadly remain true: There will be peace when the Arabs love their children more than they hate us.
Though I am skeptical, lu yehi, may that day come soon.
