Many people in general have become wimps. CHrist on a crutch, I'm reading comments and quotes from people and officials on the East coast talking about the 6 to 12 inches of snow and winds they are getting, and they are talking like they never had snow before today.

I lived on the East coast for almost 25 years. I saw snow. I saw 2 feet of snow in Brooklyn, I've seen a 3 to 4 month snowpack on the roads of rural New Jersey.

And 75 miles west of where I live, they had this much snow 4 times over in the last month.

Wimps.

I blame the blizzard of '78. They miss one little blizzard, a few people die and now snow is a national emergency.

Of course it could have something to do with the fact that it's easy to report on blizzards.

I agree with Dave Camp. It's important to have those people who are voting pay income taxes. you don't want income taxes that have no 'bite' for half the population, as it would encourage 'tax the rich' thinking.

It's not just income disparity. Educational disparity, will surely affect socio/economic mobility as well.

"By international standards, the United States has an unusually low level of intergenerational mobility: our parents’ income is highly predictive of our incomes as adults. Intergenerational mobility in the United States is lower than in France, Germany, Sweden, Canada, Finland, Norway and Denmark. Among high-income countries for which comparable estimates are available, only the United Kingdom had a lower rate of mobility than the United States."

The governor isn't pleased...

...

The postponement did not sit well with Gov. Ed Rendell, who told KYW-TV he did "not at all" agree with the decision.

"This is football; football's played in bad weather," Rendell said. "I think the fans would have gotten there, the subways work and the major arteries are still open, and other fans would have stayed home — but you play football regardless of the weather."

The governor, who does football commentaries after Eagles games, also said the decision would be a "serious handicap" for the Eagles and was unfair to the team.

"I, for one, was looking forward to sitting in the stands throughout the snow and seeing an old-time football game," Rendell said.

Asked what Vince Lombardi would say about the decision, Rendell said "he'd be mocking us."

It's not "shifting the tax burden". Rich people will still pay the overwhelming majority of taxes. This is to ensure that the lower income sections understand that entitlements have costs. This is keep this in balance, not throw them out of balance.

re: #78 Killgore Trout

I don't think the poor need to be taxed to teach them a lesson.

Increasing income taxes on the wealthy to Clinton-era levels? OMG SOCIALISM MARXISM OUR FREEDUMZ IZ GONE!!!11!!!111!

Squeezing income taxes out of people who can barely afford to get by as it is? Something that must be done "in the interests of fairness" 9_9

Yikes...

ADM's receipt of federal agricultural subsidies have come under criticism. According to a 1995 report by the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, "ADM has cost the American economy billions of dollars since 1980 and has indirectly cost Americans tens of billions of dollars in higher prices and higher taxes over that same period. At least 43 percent of ADM's annual profits are from products heavily subsidized or protected by the American government. Moreover, every $1 of profits earned by ADM's corn sweetener operation costs consumers $10, and every $1 of profits earned by its ethanol operation costs taxpayers $30."

I would agree with most of that. I don't think the answer is taking more money out of the pockets of those who don't have 2 quarters to rub together...How do you place incentives to get people off welfare and to work? Job training/placement (coupled with a time limit to benefits - Like Clinton did) is expensive but I don't see what else would be a long term solution. A crappy economy doesn't make it easier..

Fairness? After extending tax cuts for millionaires I don't think the Republicans actually have the balls to raise taxes on the working poor. These are people who can't afford skyrocketing health care costs. It's not fair that people with swimming pools and jet planes shift the tax burden to people who work hard and can barely get by.

We are approaching a point where half of the people pay no federal income tax. Seems too high to me.

It would help it we treated working hours as a resource. A hundred years ago the 50-hr week was common. Now the national optimum might be 30 hrs, with overtime and other penalties above the base. (My first adult job, 45 years ago, was a 37.5 hr week in an ILGWU unionized warehouse.)

I didn't say poor. I said wealth is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands.
"wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small number of families. The wealthiest 1 percent of families owns roughly 34.3% of the nation's net worth, the top 10% of families owns over 71%, and the bottom 40% of the population owns way less than 1%."

re: #133 qubit2020

I was discussing the fact that half of Americans pay no federal income tax.

I see those wealth concentration numbers frequently. I find them hard to believe, but the fact that some people are wealthy, very wealthy, in no way prevents me from buying a home, a car or two, saving for retirement, and helping my children pay for their college education. The fact that someone else is rich, does not make anyone else poor, just less rich by comparison.

PS I know there are truly poor people, what a country where even our poorest people are fat.

136 BishopX  Sun, Dec 26, 2010 7:46:11pm

re: #135 compound Idaho

I think those numbers are easier to believe if you live in a metro area. In Boston pretty much anything under 45,000/household is "poor", and yes concentrated amounts of rich people do make it harder for the rest of us to get by, they drive the real estate market up so high that property taxes (which are based on a percentage of home value) force people out of their homes, and because they offer a much more lucrative market for retailers you suddenly have fewer options if you're on a budget.

137 Decatur Deb  Sun, Dec 26, 2010 8:29:38pm
