Sheriff Dupnik and the Right Wing Attack Machine

Wingnuts • Views: 31,916

One of the most irritatingly absurd and dishonest talking points that quickly emerged from the right wing’s loonier blogs after Sheriff Clarence Dupnik’s brave statement calling out the climate of extremist rhetoric is that Sheriff Dupnik himself is to blame for the mass murder.

As usual these days, what starts in the loony blogs doesn’t end in the loony blogs, and this ugly smear has now made it all the way to the pages of the Wall Street Journal. Here’s how John Fund spins it:

But he also has critics who say his department was well aware of Jared Loughner’s mental instability and may have been slow to respond to death threats the suspect made in the months leading up to Saturday’s rampage.

But here’s the key point that he somehow forgot to mention:

Dupnik said the suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers. The threats weren’t against Giffords, Dupnik said.

I have some experience with how the police deal with death threats, unfortunately, and here’s the bottom line: unless there is a very direct threat on your life, the police will not and cannot do anything.

The idea that you can just call in the guys with the butterfly nets to haul away people like Loughner is a stupid fantasy, being promoted by the right wing because Sheriff Dupnik’s statement tweaked their vestigial consciences and they’re lashing out at him like vindictive morons.

Most of them are well aware that it’s a 100% bogus issue, but they promote it anyway. LGF reader Slumbering Behemoth says it well:

It’s simple. Without pointing at anyone directly, Dupnik shined a national spot light on the kind of over the top, violent political rhetoric that has been well documented here at LGF.

For this, he must be demonized and discredited at all costs by those who use such rhetoric, profit from such rhetoric, or give such rhetoric a free pass.

Much like telling The Church centuries ago that the universe does not revolve around the earth, Dupnik uttered a truth that certain vested interests do not want to be heard by anyone.

Apparently, to the hate machine:

1. Engaging in violent rhetoric and dehumanizing your opponents: Just fine! No problem whatsoever, and no possible outcomes from it.

2. Saying that violent rhetoric can have consequences: A terrible thing that could have awful, awful consequences.

Such fucking idiocy.

Retroactive Rights Repeal. After someone does something heinous, it’s okay to say, “Why didn’t they arrest him before he committed the crime?” Try arresting Glenn Beck for inciting violence (not counting the guy going to shoot up the Tides Foundation who got caught since he’s “in the past”) and people will scream “GOVERNMENT OVERREACH!!!”

There’s a reason Dupnik wasn’t chosen to walk along with McCain when he said “Build the danged fence!”…Dupnik lives near the border. They had to hire a sheriff from further north to pretend to be relevant to that commercial.

Thank you for the compliment Charles.

I value my membership here, as it has afforded me an opportunity to discuss, in depth, a wide range of topics that previously I would have given little consideration to, and with people that I previously would never have encountered or had cause to discuss things with in a rational manner.

My short time here has been an incredible learning experience for me. Because of your site and this community here, I have several times found it necessary to reexamine my beliefs and opinions, and adjust them accordingly with the facts presented. I am extremely grateful for this.

You know, there’s an episode of Intervention where they had a woman addicted to inhaling those cans of compressed air. I thought that was the strangest addiction I’d ever seen, then I realized that she was just bringing a spotlight to a problem that’s gone on for ages. Just reading all these attacks on Dupnik is proof enough of that.

Yes, but the sheriff also failed to add the shooters name to the national database that would of kept him from buying his semi-automatic pistol with 2 extended 30 round clips. From my understanding this is common practice with anybody who is mentaly unstable and has made any number of death threats. Instead when the threats were made against professors, local talk show hosts and others his deputies talked those threatened out of pressing charges by telling them that the matter was being taken care of and that the shooters mom worked for the county so they would keep an eye on him.

Massive Fail

You can add someone to a database simply for ‘being mentally unstable’?

Do you have a link to the criteria needed?

Also, link to the ‘talked out of pressing charges’ thing?

Are there any news out on the nature of Loughners threats? Since the police had contacted him about them the threats seem more severe than the average internet troll-level-threats don´t they Charles?

I think - after a tragedy like this - it is only fair to debate whether or not the authorities could have handled anything differently leading up to the incident. For a Police office like Dupniks who doesnt mind tough rhetorics i don´t see any problem with questioning how and why they let Lougher go in the first cases.

Mind you, all of the above doesnt justify the tea-party and others smear campaign agains Dupnik. But I dont put WSJ in that category - sorry. They are only referring to what the critics have said.

Thing is, there’s a shitload of crazy people, diagnosed, undiagnosed, and undiagnosable, all running around the country, and the overwhelming majority of them get through their whole lives without ever killing anyone.

I am even open to the idea that someone screwed up.

Groop I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes
And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon,
See if I don’t!

My point exactly. I saw this allegation about, what would we call it, er… “county nepotism”… that works… anyway, I saw this allegation yesterday, and I could not find a single mention of this allegation that offered any source.

Even Jim Kelly’s blog entry doesn’t bother to mention a source, or even imply an “unnamed source” or an “anonymous source”.

Doesn’t cut it… not an impossible scenario, but it means nothing unless it can be proven by a source and a public statement. As of this time, that doesn’t exist.

A general statement to the folks criticizing Dupnik: I understand the desire, at a time like this, to sift through all the evidence, and try to figure out what went so horribly wrong. It’s entirely possible that there was some law enforcement screw-up at some stage along the way. My dad was a cop when I was small, I know a lot of people in law enforcement, and errors of judgement are, sadly, very possible.

But when I just get weird snippets of articles that don’t say what they’re supposed to say, and the distinction between the sheriff’s department and the local police eludes people, and mysteriously, Sheriff Dupnik who was ‘supposed to do something’ is the new whipping boy for the radical right, I tend to assume you don’t actually care, and are just casting blame around and seeing where it lights.

I must say, the incredibly ugly way in which the Sheriff has been attacked, not because he made accusations or named names, but because he had the gall to condemn bigotry and hatred, is the most disturbing thing to me about this whole event.

A violent gun rampage? Happens all the time in the USA. A violent attack with anti-government overtones? Happens all too often in the past couple of years. A Democrat getting shot? Inevitable.

But a decent law enforcement officer getting attacked by basically all media outlets in the USA for condemning bigotry and hatred? That is seriously, seriously disturbing.

136 Ming  Tue, Jan 11, 2011 4:03:34pm

I am particularly saddened about the attacks on Sheriff Dupnik. Part of the reason is that I live in Maricopa County, about 120 miles north of Tucson, and I was truly touched and grateful when I saw the Sheriff on TV last Saturday, expressing his very sincere concern for the state of political discourse in our country. I would even go so far to say that he made his comments out of love: for our State of Arizona, and for our entire country. He was trying to make a positive contribution with his words, after a day of tragedy. Instead, he has now become part of the very negative discourse that he correctly is concerned about. We need more people like him. We must be able to disagree without being disagreeable. If it is indeed now the case that a million or more Americans now see the Sheriff as their enemy, this country may really be in trouble.

This is unbelievable! I’m sorry, but Dupnik brought the attention onto himself. Dupnik attacked Palin and the right only to shine a light in someone else’s backyard rather than his own.

Jesus Christ have you even seen his statement?

But he also has critics…

From he Fox News school of journalism. Along those lines, we regularly see this kind of reporting:

Liberals within his own party are critical of Obama because….

Democrats claimed that Beck was directly responsible for the attack.

Somehow, the WSJ neglected to mention that those “critics” also happen to be Republican toadies.

I would say the inaction by Dupnik in his official duties to keep the county safe is more responsible than anything Palin said or did. Bottom line is Loughner was deranged. He was not inspired to shoot anyone by Palin. The fact of the matter is that the shooter was a left leaning whacko that needed to be institutionalized.

Weaseling out:

Wilson spokesman Neal Patel says the photo of Wilson was taken when the congressman stopped by Palmetto State Armory in August 2010 to thank them for creating jobs and that it was a congressional visit. He said he’d have to check back and see if the component was made before or after the photo was taken.

“If you look at the picture it’s not on the actual gun” Patel tells Free Times about the engraving and the gun Wilson is holding in the photograph.

Bigotry? How so? The left has been vicious in its attacks on Palin and the right. I wonder who the bigots really are? People like myself who never said a bigoted word or leftists that would attack Palin simply because she is a woman that would put the pansies in their place.

Let me tell you something little man, President Palin is the meanest, most self satisfied bitch I have run across since high school.
She is every woman who talks behind your back in church about your kid because he wears black and has long hair (but has never even had a beer, let alone gotten a girl pregnant) while hers are running around getting pregnant, being sent to the military for drug issues and vandalizing houses with their friends.
Not only that she is a victim…always a victim. Nothing is ever, ever her fault. Never, ever, ever.
I don’t care that she has kids, I don’t care that she did not abort her DS child (I celebrate it) what i care about is the fact that SHE was able to exercise her choice but she does not want the rest of us to have that choice. I care that she used and has used that baby as a freaking prop all over the country.

I don’t hate her with the fire of a 1000 burning suns because she is a woman, I hate her because of the kind of woman she is.

…and no I am not jealous…but thank you for playing.

The truth rarely lies in the middle of two arbitrary points.

For example, you claim the civil war wasn’t about slavery.

I claim it is.

To support my argument, I show that every single secessionary document of the Southern States named slavery as the cause of their secession.

In this case, the truth is the Civil War was about slavery. It was not solely about slavery, but it was about slavery. The Southern States thought so.

So the truth is not in the middle of our two positions.

Do you understand?

That’s basically what I meant… they are tweets… now, I don’t tweet, don’t even know much about them… but I have the basic idea.

And it seems to me, there are tweets you can source, mainly because the tweet say they are from some one recognizable (like a politician or entertainment personality) and the person attached tot he tweet takes ownership of those tweets.

But after that condition I mention above, there can millions of tweets flying to and fro on the intertubes, with all sorts of rhetoric, but the ability to source them to a real ideology is difficult if not impossible in some cases.

Yes, if the tweet can be sourced, to someone recognizable, it’s valid, the rest, it’s a National Twitter Inquirer. IMO.

I am not sure Fox is the least truthful! I think truth is in the eye of the beholder. There is no doubt Fox is a right of center news source. But then ABC, CBS, and NBC are left of center.

No seriously, they’re the “least truthful” this is not up to debate.

Moulitsas a. is an asshole, and b. jumped the gun.

However, as you get deeper into this argument you are going to notice something, namely that while left-leaning pundits may say unpleasant stuff, you are going to be hard-pressed to find ugly and vitriolic speech from Democratic nominees, elected officials, people with a platform at the DNC, and people with a national TV audience. That’s the imbalance, that’s the issue that people are concerned about. Bloggers will always say shit. It’s the access to actual power that’s starting to concern people.

Now, tell me about Al Sharpton at the DNC, that’s next for you.

Of course it’s an attack on Palin. But, if you have been paying attention to the issue over the last 4 days, the issue has not been whether Markos likes Palin, the issue has been the tone of the rhetoric coming from certain people on the right… violent rhetoric.

Now, I ask you again, how was that tweet from Markos violent rhetoric

re: #142 disillusioned

This is unbelievable! I’m sorry, but Dupnik brought the attention onto himself. Dupnik attacked Palin and the right only to shine a light in someone else’s backyard rather than his own.

Please provide a direct quote where the sheriff blamed Palin.

Don’t you understand even if those tweet DID come from died in the wool leftists… YOU CAN’T PROVE IT… so your inclusion of them here on LGF is WORTHLESS.

Can we just agree now, everybody, that this is a decent rule? Twitter is waaaaay too easy to use for trolling massive numbers of people.

re: #329 disillusioned

Ok So expalin the NAZI comments from Reid. Or explain Obama’s comments about “if they bring a knife, we’ll bring a gun” Or aren’t these powerful enough elected officials. That wasn’t too hard pressed.

Here’s the deal:

Reid is an ass and has been for years. He was speaking for himself and not speaking for the liberal community or the Democrat party. He was rightly chastised by his own and those who didn’t are the same kind of asses.

Alan Grayson is a bigger ass. Like Reid, he was speaking for himself. He is not the Dem a pied piper equivalent of Beck or Limbaugh.

As for Obama, he was clearly speaking metaphorically. Just like George Bush was when he promised a ‘Crusade’ against terror.

Obama’s critics are idiots in the same way Bush’s critics were when they criticized his use of metaphor.

I have issues with speech and rhetoric but comparing morons like Reid, Grayson, et al, to the vitriol coming from the organized right nowadays is absurd.

As for Obama, grow up. He is the President of the United States and unless and until he’s caught red handed in deliberate deceit, afford him the respect he has earned. And I say that to anyone who paints George Bush as the devil incarnate, an idiot or uncaring. He was the President of the United States and deserves respect.

We may not all agree but the level of visceral vitriol is unacceptable in civilized society.

American politics need not resemble the visceral politics of Syria, Iran or Lebanon.

Think for yourself. If I want to hear parrots, I can go to the pet store.

Many of you say you don’t read me for my politics, which is fine. Though I’m not about to go on any political rant here, I’ll understand if you skip this section about the killing of six people and the wounding of 20 others outside a grocery store in Tucson Saturday. For the rest of you, I just ask you to do one thing today: think.

“Think about our country and what kind of place it’s become when a 22-year-old man can freely walk up to a congresswoman and shoot her in the head, and then kill six others, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl born on 9/11, whose parents said she wanted to have a job one day to help the less fortunate, and who, according to the Arizona Daily Star, was fond of telling her mother: “We are so blessed. re: #271 Charles

Judging from Twitter, this is only the beginning of the attacks on Dupnik. The hatred directed at him from the right wing is very revealing.

Right after listening to his press conference, I descended into the dank bowels of the internet tubes. The far right blogs were already fired up with hate towards the Sheriff. I pointed it out here, because I couldn’t believe they were going to go after him. They were supposed to be gung ho for law and order.
I used to assume the the talking points passed downwards, it was strictly a one way flow. What I saw Saturday was a spontaneous expression of outrage. The spinners immediately echoed the far right blogs.
It appears they may have bypassed the spin doctors and went straight to
the blogs for the spin.

CBS didn’t include partisan breakdown on that question but Kos emailed them….
I emailed CBS and asked for the partisan breakdowns of that question. Here they are:
Do you think it is ever justified for citizens to take violent action against the government, or is it never justified?

Republican 28% yes, 64% no
Democrat 11% yes, 81% no
Indepdent 11% yes, 81% no

That’s more than twice as likely as Dems. and is also just about the same as Muslim support for terrorism in Iindonesia.

Drudge’s link to the story? “Obama thanks the sheriff…” This of course under the link “Sheriff blames Rush for shooting”. It’s all about creating an alternate narrative with these guys that damages their political enemies. Reality? They create their own reality.

the comment section at ABC news is full of right wing paranoia. Here’s an example

Aside from her brief facebook post on Saturday, Sarah Palin still silent on the Giffords shooting. Methinks she’s afraid to come out from her Wasilla bunker or that her writers haven’t figured out a way to make her sound like she actually gives a shit.

Ha, yeah as if.

I really think this will be a turning point for political discourse in this Country. Sure, Rush, Beck etc won’t back down (obviously), but I don’t see any way that the political leaders, Boehner, Paul Ryan, McConnell, etc can continue pandering to the worst part of their constituents and get away with it anymore. They may continue to do it……but I think the Country will finally reject it.

I’ll tell you what wouldn’t make her sound worse. Something to the effect of: “Last fall, I used gunsights as ways of marking targeted districts. I called it my “first salvo” and I used other phrases such as “Don’t retreat, RELOAD” to help rile up my supporters to get them out to vote. That was bad judgment on my part and I am sorry for contributing to the hateful rhetoric that inspired people like the shooter in Tuscon and the man in California who got into a firefight with Oakland police and CHP on his way to kill people at the Tides Foundation. I would like to repudiate what I said, and what my colleagues at Fox like Glenn Beck have said in my defense. I was wrong, period.”

Oh, that’ll never happen, but if it did, it would be the first respectable thing she said in public.

Also consider this: Over 30% of Republicans imagine violence is justifiable against the government in some circumstances. Now think about what today’s wingnuts actually believe is happening today: Death panels for the sick, elderly and retarded (Palin), Cloward Piven plot to intentionally destroy the country (beck), Legislation “rammed down their throats” against the will of the people (all of them), taking over 1/6 of the economy (Bachmann).
I imagine if you were to ask specifically if today’s circumstances warrant violence against the government the results would only be slightly lower.

Interesting! Before this, I had never heard of Dupnik. Arpaio, on the other hand, never seems to have met a microphone he didn’t to suck on like a…bong.

It’s a wonder he’s popular with anyone who claims to be a fiscal conservative.

An analysis by the Maricopa County Office of Management and Budget, completed in September, 2010, found Arpaio has misspent at as much as $80 million in taxpayer dollars over the previous 5 years.
(snip)
Arpaio used the detention fund to pay for investigations of political rivals, and activities involving his human-smuggling unit. The analysis also showed a number of inappropriate spending items, including a trip to Alaska where deputies stayed at a fishing resort, and trips to Disneyland

Separate investigations by The Arizona Republic uncovered widespread abuse of public funds and county policies by Arpaio’s office, including high-ranking employees routinely charging expensive meals and stays at luxury hotels on their county credit cards.

I fail to see the equivalence between the question asked in the CBS poll and the ME terrorism poll. The ME poll is regarding “attacks on civilians”. Your comparison is incorrect.

re: #501 Killgore Trout

Also consider this: Over 30% of Republicans imagine violence is justifiable against the government in some circumstances. Now think about what today’s wingnuts actually believe is happening today: Death panels for the sick, elderly and retarded (Palin), Cloward Piven plot to intentionally destroy the country (beck), Legislation “rammed down their throats” against the will of the people (all of them), taking over 1/6 of the economy (Bachmann).
I imagine if you were to ask specifically if today’s circumstances warrant violence against the government the results would only be slightly lower.

There is something of a disconnect IN MOST PEOPLE between this kind of gum-flapping and action. People have been raging about all the ‘Bushitler’ stuff again, and God knows, I heard him called a fascist a few times, but people didn’t act on what they said they believed. (I mean, hell, if the guy is really Hitler, you should try to shoot him or something, right?)

What makes me fearful that this particular line of attack is going to have a lower ignite point for the few and the freaked-out is that it’s playing not on people’s anger, but their fear. Very few Americans, no matter how pissed off they were at Bush, thought he would do anything horrible to them personally. Yes, Naomi Wolf developed a theory that the administration was opening her mail, and there was a little ‘maybe he won’t surrender power’ talk in the very fringiest corners of the room, but not much. Almost no one seriously thought a draft would be instituted. And so on.

What I see as different now is that the attack against Obama, from the beginning, has focused on the idea that his administration will GET you in specific ways. They will take away your healthcare, and force you in front of death panels. They will take away your ice cream. They will take away your guns. They will brainwash your kids. They will HURT you. And people seem to see that as a real threat.

Now, the average American is still safely above the ignite point even for this, but I think the level is rising, and I think we’re going to get more crazies, and potentially, something like an organized militia activity or another McVeigh.

That I would like to avoid.

It’s all about being cool. Seriously. I’ve known a lot of people who bought large magazines for their semi-automatic weapons for target shooting…when I asked them why (while enjoying shooting 50+ rounds at targets without reloading…expensive days those were), the answer was always the same…”Because it’s cool!”

This guy was different. He wanted large magazines because he wanted to kill as many people as possible (the only other logical? explanation).

He said, “It’s Star Trek, mom. In Star Wars they use blasters.”

She said, “How about Blaster?”

I said, “That sounds perfect. And when he’s a little boy, people can send birthday presents to young Master Blaster, at his parent’s address.”

re: #32 MSBoxer

I’d like to stick up for this gentleman to a certain extent. After reading the British article to which he makes reference, one sees that there was clearly a body of material that the alleged shooter had “published” prior to the event, on publicly available sites like you-tube and facebook.

I am absolutely not engaging in the “retroactive rights” game properly alluded to earlier — also commonly known as “Monday Morning Quarterbacking.”

What I am saying however, is that it’s possible we could learn how to implement a very few, very minor, very carefully written guidelines strictly for the purchase of handguns in the future. Please note again that I am talking about the future.

I am specifically and only speaking about the act of narrowly adding to the already existing curtailment on the purchasing of a handgun from this proposed “list.” I am not proposing anything more than an additional curtailment to handgun purchasing, the mechanism of which ostensibly already exists. Indeed, my (meager) understanding is that “a” list does exist and includes, perhaps among others, prior felons. I’d only be proposing a narrow expansion to this already existing list which precludes (or perhaps only slows down) the process of purchasing a handgun (something I know nothing about).

The proposal would be, that if a person has had a run in with the police for any type of death threat whatsoever, after verification, perhaps the person could be briefly interviewed by a psychiatrist? Perhaps not — even that feels weak to me for a variety of reasons.

However the end result of what I’d like to see is that if a person is “tripped up” by verbal threats which are of sufficient seriousness that he is actually “brought into a Police Station” (and then later, presumably, asked not to return to the class, or school itself), then I’d personally like to see that person be put on a database simply for the purpose of buying a handgun.

And the ramifications of the person being put on that list would be that he would have to somehow, and in someway, adhere to a “higher standard” than a someone who has not issued threats of a sufficiently public and significant nature that he was interviewed by the local police.

I would not like to see said person’s rights infringed in any other way. Merely in the purchase of a handgun. Obviously I’ve only sketched out this idea; I do not plan to take it further. But it strikes me (I suppose obviously) as not an unreasonable on its face. However, I am always interested in being rebutted, and in general, being shown the error of my arguments. So please, by all means, show me where I’ve crossed a line in suggesting this admittedly lightly sketched proposal.

Thanks in advance! :-)

Is there any leftie willing to bet me $1Million this extreme rhetoric ‘anti-extreme rhetoric’ campaign isn’t being run from White House?

I’m no “leftie”, but I’ll bet him $10,000. We each put up a cashier’s check for that amount (so no welshing by the loser), to be held by, oh, let’s pick Antonin Scalia, someone rarely if ever accused of being a liberal.

Now who will be the judge of all this? I’ll nominate Chief Justice Roberts, Republican but hardly a wingnut.

If Breitbart can prove to the Chief Justice’s satisfaction within one month that the WH is behind this alleged campaign, he gets the money. If he doesn’t, I get it and give the $10,000 from him to charity.

Does that sound fair?
