Heyas lizards! I just realized Borders is closing its stores. I was going to open a small bookstore many years ago and got frightened away by the Corporate Bookstore Takeover. Now they're in the same boat as I was.

The grill is fired up and I am waiting for the signal from She Who Must Be Obeyed to scorch six fine snausages (sic), three fajita beef and three mild provolone pork. An Anchor Porter, the temp is below 100, and life is muy bueno in LA.

I joined a pool last month; I could only do 20 minutes of laps my first time, but now I'm already up to 35 minutes a day (which the online widget tells me uses as many calories as an hour and a half of walking) before I have to stagger back to the locker room on rubbery legs. My scale says I weigh the same, but my jeans say I'm down a size, so I'll call that a win.

Sadly, I'm the fastest girl in the slow lane or the slowest girl in the medium lane, and I drift and keep hitting people and they don't like me much. I think I might need a lesson, which is rather embarrassing. But I'm enjoying it too much to quit, plus I spent a ridiculous amount of money on the comfiest bathing suit ever. And did I mention I can fit in my old jeans again? (well, not all of them yet, still three sizes to go. But it's easier and faster than I thought it'd be, I love that I can get exercise without getting sweaty).

also too. Am I the only one who thinks it odd that the next crafts program they're offering is shoemaking? Is that something real people actually do for a hobby?

I'm a horrible cook -- roast chicken and grilled lamb chops are about my only "from scratch" recipes. But I'm eating smaller portions (Zabar's takeout comes in a size they call 'for two' and I cut it into three), more fresh fruit and berries, and less chocolate.

Try to work on the cooking, you'll be surprised how effective it can be. The "healthy" accurate in restaurant and frozen food aren't usually very accurate. Good work on the portion control.

No.

It is, however, the beginning of the end of paper as the standard print media.

There are books that don't work (at this time) for e-books. They're books that need a larger display than the screen can provide, or for which the normal risk of the display being damaged is too high to accept. Art books, children's books, and atlases are the examples of the former, while children's books and field repair manuals are examples of the latter.

Big new feature in LGF Pages - auto-posting to Twitter, by linking your LGF account to your Twitter account. I'll have a post about it later, but you can try it right now -- go to your Account Settings, and you'll see a new section with a button labeled "Connect to Twitter." Click that bad boy and you'll go to Twitter, where you can grant our Twitter app (called "LGF Connect") access to your Twitter account to post automatic tweets when you post LGF Pages.

The tweet is sent from your account, with our app, "LGF Connect."

(You can revoke access for LGF Connect at any time, in your Twitter settings. Go to the Applications tab and revoke access for LGF Connect, and it's done. There's also an option to "Disconnect" in your LGF account settings, but this does not revoke privileges, it just deletes our access codes -- only Twitter can revoke the access privileges.)

After you authorize LGF Connect to post to Twitter, you'll see a couple of new options in the LGF Pages posting form -- a checkbox that lets you determine whether or not auto-tweet happens, and an input field for any Twitter hashtags you feel like adding.

It's all automatic from there; the URL of your LGF Page is automatically shortened using our lgf.bz shortener, and the title of the Page becomes the text of the tweet. I've been using a form of this code to automatically post to Twitter for more than a year. You should be mindful of your title's length -- the auto-tweet code truncates titles more than 100 characters to try to avoid going over Twitter's 140-character limit.

Not quite. It's like that old "what weighs more, a pound of iron or pound of feathers" trick question. Muscle cells and fat cells weigh the same, but muscle cells are much denser. The analogy I recall is, visualize a muscle cell as a pea, and a fat cell as a cotton ball.

How about if I put it this way: 'X' volume of fat weighs less than 'X' volume of muscle. That explains the additional room in the jeans.

Language immersion is something people pay good money for at private schools -- the Lycee Francaise is one of the most expensive chains around, the Mandarin charter school in lower Manhattan is highly competitive (stockbrokers send their kids, because they think it'll give them a huge advantage in their eventual careers). Lots of Jews send their kids to Hebrew school, lots of Catholics send their kids to Latin school... and it doesn't make them any less American.

People fluent in Spanish can understand Portugeuse, Italian and French; it's by far the most useful second language for people who don't want another alphabet.

I've told them that before.

I don't think they'll like the next group to come in. Recently, immigration from Latin America has slowed to a trickle. Combined with the fact that I think that history repeats itself, and the next wave of immigration will come from the Arab Nations (+Iran maybe?) in the style of post-1848 Europe.

As to where they go, they'll go to places with a significant number of Arabs already. Meaning the Great Lakes region. If Iranians start coming over too, they go to Southern California.

I don't know your family's background, but what I sometimes do with Jews (or Irish or Italians) who talk like this is remind them of what was said about our own people back when they were coming to the United States in large numbers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We were supposed to be unassimilable. We didn't speak English and would NEVER learn. We couldn't understand democracy. We would be the death of United States.

Now we're considered as American as bagels and green beer on St. Patrick's day, and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of those immigrants who they swore couldn't become Americans hate on the Mexicans.

It's all been said about every wave of immigrants, and it's never been true. We all get settled in, and assimilate slowly over the generations.

Do you know why they're focusing on this? Is it fear, or do they dislike seeing people speaking Spanish on the street, or do they follow a pundit who talks about this a lot? How you tackle it may depend on where this is coming from.

lots of Catholics send their kids to Latin school... and it doesn't make them any less American.

Not in California they don't--Catholics here pay to immerse their kids in Mandarin!

Right. A 150-pound couch potato is two full sizes bigger than a 150-pound athlete. And more jiggly.

Unfortunately, the BMI doesn't pay any mind to fat and muscle ratios.

I'm amazed at all the features we have here that we get to use free of charge. All we have to do is basically not be an asshole.

Those of you who use these features regularly who don't have an LGF subscription need to really really think about doing the subscription thing - a mere $10/month. It's amazingly reasonable considering you basically have your very own blog-within-the-blog.

My dad, who is worse, is a mix of Dutch, German, Norweigan, and Swedish.

My mom is all over the place. German, Dutch, French, Alsatian, English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Swiss, Polish, and Slovakian.

I have no clue where it came from. Possibly bad experiences in Florida is the best guess I have.

Bluntly:

My family is of the opinion that the US will turn into Mexico. They say Mexicans want to live here, but are loyal to Mexico. As proof of this, they cited a supposed school in Georgia teaching in Spanish.

I know they are wrong, but I am missing some pieces here.

Can't turn into Mexico--it'll turn into County Limerick. With our white skin and better-than English we've bee infiltrating for decades. Do you think a bunch of rednecks have suddenly started drinking all that Guiness?

Alright but in the Greater Philadelphia area there are quite a few Welsh names for streets and small towns. Bryn Mawr is a good example and so is Llanfair.

Especially considering the fact that my dad has an attachment to Michigan being some sort of New Netherlands. Never mind the fact that is only true for the southern peninsula. The Northern Peninsula is the American branch of Finland.

Assuming my hunch is correct, Detroit could end up be weird at the end of the century.

We had a town, Bryn Mawr, near Pittsburgh--lots of miners in the hills.

No. His family moved to Florida when he was younger (8-10?), and graduated from school in that state.

If history repeats itself, I could see Detroit becoming to the Arab world what Chicago was to the Swedish at the turn of the last century.

the UAW killed Michigan...pretty simple...strong arm unions drove business out of the state like a tidal wave...and I have never heard a union suck up define what they thought happened within reason...a lot of blab and excuses...same thing with Cleveland, Pittsburg, Gary, East Chicago and now Ramadamadingdong is knocking the shit out of unions in Chicago proper...it's an old story

pretty simple...when you can strike and shut down a company, their demands are more serious...slam the market wit Japanese cars and it's goodbye baby...the Big Three were whores for the union...they got used and abused...same story all over the country now
