Speaking of which, it looks like DWTS is going to give ol' e.e. a test of his maxim - according to latest reports, in order to get some "A"-listers on the show the producers are, for the biggest name stars, dropping the minimum practice-hour requirements as well as letting the stars approve of their music selection before-hand and be in total control of their costumes.
This means, as far as the dropping the practice hours requirements, that they just won't be as good at dancing.
There is no way around it - one has to practice to become good.
But, the producers apparently would rather have big names than people who want to dance.

A US Treasury auction of $29 billion in new debt went off smoothly Thursday despite the deadlocked battle over raising the country's debt ceiling to avoid a potentially disastrous default. The sale of seven-year notes saw fairly strong demand and they sold carrying an interest rate of 2.250 percent, better for the government than previous seven-year bond auctions in June and May, which both carried rates of 2.375 percent.
The auction underscored the lack of any visible panic so far among buyers of US Treasuries as the August 2 deadline for raising the debt cap nears.

Rising signs of strain emerged across financial markets on Thursday as investors pulled out billions of cash out of money-market funds, in turn driving the funds to rein in lending in short-term markets.Financial markets have become increasingly alarmed at the deepening divide in Washington and the potential that the U.S. could be downgraded by credit-rating agencies or, worse, default on its debt.
Banks, meanwhile, are scrambling to design emergency plans to avoid a trading logjam in the huge markets for Treasurys and short-term funding facilities if Congress fails to raise the U.S. borrowing limits by next Tuesday's deadline.

Fear mongering notwithstanding, there is actually enough money to pay the checks to those who depend on Social Security. On July 8, The Weekly Standard cited a study from the Bipartisan Study Center which "projects there will be $172 billion in federal revenues in August and $307 billion in authorized expenditures. That means there's enough money to pay for, say, interest on the debt ($29 billion), Social Security ($49.2 billion), Medicare and Medicaid ($50 billion), active duty troop pay ($2.9 billion), veterans affairs programs ($2.9 billion)."

I explain to folks that Russians don't even hear all those -ovsky, -evsky, -insky and -itsky endings - they just indicate adjectives or possesion: "Ivanovsky" just means "belonging to Ivan", or "Johnson/Jones" in English.
and a "Kuibishche" is a blacksmith shop, so "Kuibishchevsky" is basically just "Smith"...

Not really, we don't perceive them as having "meaning", i.e. we don't think of "-sky" names as indicating possession or origin, we think of them as separate, um, blocks. Of course, etymologically you're correct, but people don't think etymologically. Just as I suppose when you hear "Ericson" you don't automatically think "Eric's son", unless you want to make a joke or something.

With newer documents, you don't really have to treat them quite so carefully because the paper is more robust. As long as access is heavily restricted, they'll preserve well enough.

Yes, though it was actually more a change in the manufacturing process than the change in material, the use of sulfuric acid. This was more suited to the wood pulp, but if you treat a cotton rage paper with modern methods it'll decay just as fast. See the Barrow entry I linked for more info.

The losses that stagger me the most are in the areas of classical mathematics. Early mathematicians and scientists were among the most brilliant men ever to live, and so many of their references have been lost. Alexandria was a disaster from which the world may never truly recover.

My favorite story about Stalin is probably total bullshit, but as I don't speak Russian I'll let Sergey tell me if this was possible.
Stalin supposedly means "man of steel" Allegedly, he had a newspaper reporter killed/sent to Siberia for misprinting "Salin" which I think meant "man of mayonnaise"...like I said, I have no idea if that's accurate, but I still like the story.
"Salin" would mean "man of lard", which sounds like a great story even if it is not true...

Named after him, yes. During the Winter War with Finland, Molotov (the USSR's foreign minister) claimed the soviet bombers were dropping bread. The finnish decided if the Soviets were bringing the bread, they'd bring the drink.
Or that's the story I was told anyways.

Just got the coolest email. My BIL is a pro golfer, endorses Ping.
I had no idea Ping had a program like this...
From the email at Snopes
think this is something that all golfers should be aware of. I think all Americans should be aware of this also.. Subject: Ping (Noiselessly)
Subject: THANK YOU, PING This isn't a joke or cartoon; just something interesting to know...you may want to forward this on to others. On Monday, I played the Disney, Lake Buena Vista course. As usual the starters matched me with three other players. After a few holes we began to get to know each other a bit. One fellow was rather young and had his wife riding along in the golf cart with him. I noticed that his golf bag had his name on it and after closer inspection, it also said "wounded war veterans". When I had my first chance to chat with him I asked him about the bag. His response was simply that it was a gift. I then asked if he was wounded and he said yes. When I asked more about his injury, his response was "I'd rather not talk about it, sir". Over a few holes I learned that he had spent the last 15 months in an army rehabilitation hospital in San Antonio Texas . His wife moved there to be with him and he was released from the hospital in September. He was a rather quiet fellow; however, he did say that he wanted to get good at golf. We had a nice round and as we became a bit more familiar I asked him about the a brand new set of Ping woods and irons he was playing. Some looked like they had never been hit. His response was simple. He said that this round was the first full round he had played with these clubs. Later in the round he told me the following. As part of the discharge process from the rehabilitation hospital, Ping comes in and provides three days of golf instruction, followed by club fitting. Upon discharge from the hospital, Ping gives each of the discharged veterans, generally about 40 soldiers, a brand new set of custom fitted clubs along with the impressive golf bags. The fellow I met was named Ben Woods and he looked me in the eye and said that being fitted for those clubs was one of the best things that ever happened to him and he was determined to learn to play golf well enough to deserve the gift Ping had given him. Ben is now out of the service, medically discharged just a month ago. He is as fine a young man as you would ever want to meet. Ping has the good judgment not to advertise this program. God Bless America and the game of golf.

Economy grows at a meager 1.3%, well below the consensus estimate of 1.8% (which itself is a pretty low figure). Add that the 1Q figures were sharply downgraded from 1.9% to .4% and I think that the 114 loss so far is the tip of the iceberg.
The debate, of course, is how much of that is due to the debt debate, and how much is due to the ongoing weakness in various sectors of the economy - primarily jobs and real estate.
And yet, there are some companies that had blowout earnings during this period and the small 3 automakers are showing some signs of life in the new economic conditions, but that is also a sign of cannibalization of lost sales by the Japanese carmakers following the Sendai quake.

Depending on your investment size and whether it was in a brokerage account, it would be protected under the SIPC.
I'm with Killgore on staying invested in the markets - a downturn is still an investment opportunity. You can dollar cost average to benefit from picking up stocks that get undervalued relative to their actual performance. It's not for the faint of heart, but the pros use the same kinds of strategies. If you're worried about downside risk, consider diversifying to include a bond fund or other investments to spread risk. (Not a professional investor, but just saying what I've been doing when I've got available funds).

Insiders selling at unusually fast pace
[Link: www.marketwatch.com...]
"CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (MarketWatch) — Bad news, stock-market bulls: Corporate insiders are selling their companies’ shares at an abnormally fast pace.
In fact, one measure of that selling activity shows insiders of NYSE- and AMEX-listed companies recently were selling at the fastest rate since data began being collected in the early 1970s, four decades ago.
On the theory that insiders know more about their companies’ prospects than do the rest of us, this is an ominous sign."
...................
"One firm that gathers and analyzes the data is Argus Research, which publishes its findings in the Vickers Weekly Insider Report. One indicator that the firm calculates is a ratio of the number of shares that insiders have sold in the open market to the number that they have purchased.
In the week ending last Friday, according to the latest issue of the Vickers report, this sell-to-buy ratio stood at 6.43 to 1. This is higher than 95% of other weeks’ readings over the last decade.
That’s ominous enough, but consider last week’s sell-to-buy ratio for just those issues listed on the NYSE or AMEX. That came in at 13.10 to 1, which is the highest reading for this ratio since when Vickers began collecting the data, which was October 1974."

A Democrat as speaker of a Republican house? Am I missing something?
The very big mistake the Democrats did was to not do more when they had control. They were idiots to think they could negotiate with Tea Partiers, even though the latter hadn't been elected yet, but the writing was on the wall.
I'm proposing a moderate house for the remainder of the term. Mainstream (if there are more than a few dozen) Republicans should caucus with the Democrats (for the good of the country) and reject the Tea Party and its religious right extremist and isolationist platform. If they were to do that, the Tea Party would be flushed out in the next election, and yes, they'd have to wait another cycle or two to regain a majority - but four to six years of economic prosperity while the Republicans work their way back to a sizeable portion of the House wouldn't be the worst thing for us.

This is roughly the strategy I will follow if I have enough profit to reinvest. I normally invest for the long term with a diverse portfolio, but am not adverse to taking risk with things I feel are undervalued. It's just that my business takes priority for the moment, so I'm out of the markets altogether for now. Hopefully enough people want some nice aquacultured ornamental marine fishes.

So, we should buy gold?
I have my eye on an 18 Carat necklace . . .
Depends.
If you're purchasing it as a long-term fiscal investment, no.
If you're purchasing it as a pretty, maybe.
If you're purchasing it with the intent of selling for a profit, maybe.
As rightwingconspirator notes, I'm basing my peak on the inflation adjusted Carter peak. I expect it's a bubble just as it was during Carter's tenure and just as it was for Russia and Venezuela and a few other places where economic unrest encouraged over-purchase.
The production price of gold (per Troy ounce) is $200 to $300, with some sources claiming as high as $500. Add markup and desire and the most you should see without market manipulation or persuasion is about double for just the metal, giving us $400 to $600 ($1,000).
As jewelry, you're paying for the work as well as the material. The worth of work from the artist is a significant variable. If you're purchasing a 14K necklace from a chain store it /should/ be a lot less than a 14K necklace from, say, Mary Lu Hu. Bottom line, if you're buying it for the metal, don't.
As short term, it depends on how well you watch the market. It will burst, but as with all bubbles the question is when. Sell near the peak and you're doing great. Sell early and you do well but kick yourself for the lost opportunity of closer to the peak. Sell late and kick yourself for losing money (bubbles collapse FAST).

Meanwhile, details of the 10th anniversary commemoration at Ground Zero are being released. Both President Obama and former President Bush will attend. They will make selected readings, but no speeches. They will attend for the name reading of all those killed on 9/11, including those at Shanksville and the Pentagon. Well, I'd be buying it because I like glittery things and if you buy glittery things with a "k" mark on them you can always sell/pawn them later if you need cash. Probably for a loss, but for more than something without a "k" mark on it.
Actually, some of the department stores are selling stuff at sales that are not a bad value. I bought a 14K gold beaded necklace for less than what I would pay for the gold beads at the online bead wholesaler I like. I bought it to tear it apart and remake it with other beads I have--and I got the 14K gold clasp with it.
With sales, coupons and added discounts if you use your dept store credit card, there are some good buys out there. Not necessarily for investment purposes . . . .

Nothing like a little fear mongering to get the morning going. There is no damage at the moment. The damage occurs only if the default occurs. The ratings agencies aren't going to act until the default occurs, and even then one has to consider the US economy versus other investment opportunities and realize that it's still a safer investment than many other parts of the world.
This is brinksmanship at its worst, but it's nothing we haven't seen in the past. It will go down to the wire, but a deal will be done to extend the debt ceiling and the markets will move on to focus on the next crisis or opportunity (and well, even a crisis is an opportunity if you know where to look).

Russian govt got nothing but problems from this (e.g. they finally had to completely admit Katyn and to begin the transfer of some of the remaining documents, which is a big deal). And no positives whatsoever (killing a "hostile" President could easily lead to a backlash reaction and election of his brother, compared to whom Lech was almost a liberal). So the CTs don't work on a common sense level. Stops no one.

I agree that much of the coverage is just drama and sensationalism but I think there is actual damage being done to the economy. I'm waiting to contract some home improvements. I'm ready to put about $25,000 into the economy. I would have done it last month but economic uncertainty has made me delay the decision until I feel confident the economy won't implode again. I'm not the only one. I think a lot of people are putting off spending because the loony Republicans have stretched out the debt debate to the last second.

I've been watching the dust-up between Kosovo and Serbia at the northern Kosovo border crossings in the past 48 hours. Considering that next spring my son will be reporting to his command (18th MP Brigade) which support NATO Peacekeeping duties there, it grabs my attention.
Serb police, NATO boost forces after Kosovo violence
[Link: www.reuters.com...]
NATO peacekeepers can fire if attacked in Kosovo
" PRISTINA, Kosovo — American and French peacekeepers were told Thursday to fire their weapons in defense if attacked at border posts on Kosovo's northern boundary with Serbia, a day after the crossings were set ablaze by Serbs armed with firebombs, a NATO spokesman said.
There have been days of mounting tension between ethnic Albanians and minority Serbs after Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci ordered special police units to take over two disputed border posts that were previously manned by Serb members of the police under EU supervision. One Kosovo policeman died in the operation.
"We are in command of those places," NATO spokesman Capt. Hans Wichter said. "If we are threatened, we have the right to use weapons." He said the area was "declared a military zone," meaning the alliance makes all decisions related to security.
NATO troops were attacked late Wednesday by machine guns and anti-tank rockets as they moved to secure the border posts, the top NATO commander in Kosovo, Maj. Gen. Erhard Buehler, said. No injures were reported. They took control of the border posts Thursday."

I shrug at it all, but my opinion would be that every single cross beam in those building makes a cross. There is nothing mystical about finding this piece and in fact it was selected, probably out of innumerable similar ones.
It was not and is not an exclusive Christian site by any stretch and it would have been trivially simple to choose a part that was visually striking yet not appearing to claim dominance by one group over all others.
I have no respect for that aspect of it.

Poor Larry. LOL He seems to have a thing about suing people...
Larry Elliot Klayman (born July 20, 1951) is an American attorney and activist. He is known as the founder and former Chairman of Judicial Watch, a public interest and non-profit law firm, which attained notoriety through the initiation of 18 civil lawsuits against the Clinton Administration, and later an unsuccessful lawsuit against Vice-President Dick Cheney in order to obtain information about the White House's energy task force.
In September 2003, Klayman left the organization to run for the United States Senate from Florida. He lost in the Republican primary. In 2006 Klayman sued Judicial Watch and its president Tom Fitton charging financial and other mismanagement issues which damaged Judicial Watch, the donors and Klayman.
and
In April 2011, Klayman filed a lawsuit against Facebook, accusing the social media website of "negligence" for not responding quickly enough to calls to take down an anti-Israel "Third Intifada" page and demanding $1 billion in damages. Facebook representatives responded that the suit was "without merit".
and
As of July 1, 2011, Klayman's Pennsylvania law license was in "Administrative Suspension" status (usually indicative of a failure to pay bar fees and/or a failure to keep up with Continuing Legal Education requirements).
Larry Klayman. Douche.

It will have to be a level of bullshit unseen since the GOP tried to pass Caribou Barbie off as a legitimate choice for VP. The general story in the press is about GOP obstruction and infighting leading to Boehner's failure.

On the latest trash from Dr. Roy Spencer (AGW)
Forbes Version of Science Journalism Is More Than A little Deluded.
Someone on twitter asked me about an op-ed in Forbes with the breath-taking title NEW NASA DATA BLOWS GAPING HOLE IN GLOBAL WARMING ALARMISM. With a title like that, you know right off the bat that this article is written for people looking for confirmation to their belief that ALL of the planet’s major science bodies are wrong and a very tiny handful of sceptics are right.
Furthermore, this is not from the editorial board of Forbes or a Forbes reporter, but instead from a writer for the ultra conservative Heartland Institute. The same people who sent me (and hundreds of other meteorologists working in TV) a glossy paper claiming that the surface temperature record could not be trusted based on a blog post by a blogger whose claim was totally discredited by NOAA.
The junk science piece in Forbes was based on a paper written by Dr. Roy Spencer a well-known climate sceptic here in Huntsville and was published in an open access journal of apparently rather dubious reputation. That in itself does not mean the paper is wrong, and it is important to remember that peer review has often said to be a necessary but not sufficient check on accuracy.
While a big name like Forbes is clearly unable to produce a decent science story, Stephanie Pappas at Live Science certainly can. Her piece on the paper is excellent, and well worth a read. Live Science asked some of the very top experts in the field about the paper like Kevin Trenberth at NCAR, and Gavin Schmidt at NASA. Pappas couldn’t find one climate scientist who agreed with the conclusions in Spencer’s paper.
A scientific critique of the claims in Spencer’s paper has been written by Barry Bickmore a geochemist at Brigham Young University. Hardly a center of liberal learning! Bickmore describes himself as “ a geochemistry professor at Brigham Young University, an active Mormon, and an active Republican. From 2008-2010 he was a County Delegate for the Republican Party. Anything he posts here (obviously) represents his personal opinions, and does not necessarily reflect the position of his employer, Brigham Young University.

Same situation over at Federal Hall, where a NBC crew occupied the prime spot overlooking the NYSE and the crowds.
With the DJIA paring its losses from the open, I'd say that someone has a good idea that things aren't as bad and/or the debt deal will get done in some fashion.
Meanwhile, the Obama Administration gets a win on auto emissions and CAFE standards.
On Friday, when President Obama announced even stricter standards — in fact, the largest increase in mileage requirements since the government began regulating consumption of gasoline by cars in the 1970s — the chief executives of Detroit’s Big Three were in Washington again. But this time they were standing in solidarity with the president, who was also surrounded by some of Detroit’s highest-tech — and most fuel-efficient — new vehicles.
While the American carmakers, as well as their Asian rivals, once argued against even minimal increases in government fuel rules, they are acquiescing without protest to an increase to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, from the current 27 miles per gallon.
The new standards are seen by the Obama administration as critical to reducing oil consumption and cutting consumer expenses at the pump, and the White House made it clear to Detroit executives that the changes were coming and they needed to cooperate.

Those three are each a different case. Iraq shouldn't have been invaded, period. With Kaddafi it's a matter of protecting a civilian population from imminent danger. Erdogan is yet a fourth way - a democratically elected leader who apparently wants to reshape the country in the mold of justices Scalia and Thomas.

Job hunting, customer hunting, wondering which bill gets delayed a few days.
There won't be an instant crash for everyone. There's a lot of stickiness in the system, plus there's the fact that despite these people's wishes most people want things to get better. Becuase of that, most of us will do what we normally do on a Tuesday -- except we'll also keep a wary eye on things in case we're one of the slippage points.

From Israel the hordes clawing at the walls of Jerusalem proclaim cheerfully that next year there will be no more Israel, and I know Israel shrugs this off as do I, and will mount a strike during the summer against all of its enemies in the middle east. This will make the muslims worldwide go into a frenzy, attacking everyone around them.

War for Norway: A Letter From a Sanguinary Future
Posted by: Lee | June 25th, 2007 · 1:04 PM
Atlas has a troubling letter from a Norwegian about demographic replacement in his country. He writes that immigration from Muslim countries to Norway is now approaching 35,000 annually. Given the high birthrates of Muslim immigrants, that’s a very large influx in view that Norway’s entire population is less than that of Colorado (4.6 million).
The nations capital is already 50% muslim, and they ALL go there after entering Norway. Adding the 1.2 births per woman per year from Muslim women, there will be 300 000+ Muslims out of the then 480 000 inhabitants of that city.Orders from Libya and Iran say that Oslo will be known as Medina at the latest in 2010, although I consider this a PR-stunt nevertheless it is their plan.
(Atlas Shrugs)All very true* and troubling (*note: 50% figure for Oslo is exaggerated, it’s about half that as of now). But then the letter turns militant and apocalyptic, with fears that Armageddon is at hand. From our contemporary time and place one’s “militia kook” alarm goes off instantly with this stuff. But in Europe, the author is perhaps only an early convert to an argument which will become increasingly persuasive, as the Muslim to Christian ratio continues to tilt heavily in favor of an Islamic majority:
We are stockpiling and caching weapons, ammunition and equipment. This is going to happen fast.
[…]
Oslo and the southeast may fall easily, but there are other lines than “state”-borders drawn across this country since long before there was even a single Muslim in the world, and we have held them this long, against everyone else too. We are entering a new golden age for my people, and those of a handful other countries, but only through struggle.
(Atlas Shrugs)Presumably he means withdrawal to the north into the Jotunheimen, for a defense of the Gudbrandsdal Valley. A sound short-term strategy that has worked in the past, but ultimately an untenable position against a force that controlled the southern North Sea ports. Losing Oslo means losing the interior by pieces.
They’d have to defend Trondheim and Namsos against an amphibious assault which would cut the country in half (again the southern ports become permanent threats to the north). But the primary problem would be to defend the Hedmark, against land encirclement by Muslim advance up the Glomma. Both of these moves were employed successfully by the Germans in Operation Weserübung and could be done so again.

It seems google cache updates more frequently when pages are changed and/or linked to. Geller's getting a lot of traffic to that page (which is probably why she edited it) so that means the changes were probably fairly recent.

Based on the cached version I get from a website I am very involved with...it shows the cached version as July 25
I have found it to be about once a week as a general rule for that site.
Google takes a snapshot of each page examined as it crawls the web and caches these as a back-up in case the original page is unavailable. If you click on the "Cached" link, you will see the web page as it looked when we indexed it. The cached content is the content Google uses to judge whether this page is a relevant match for your query.
When the cached page is displayed, it will have a header at the top which serves as a reminder that this is not necessarily the most recent version of the page. Terms that match your query are highlighted on the cached version to make it easier for you to see why your page is relevant.
The "Cached" link will be missing for sites that have not been indexed, as well as for sites whose owners have requested we not cache their content.
[Link: www.google.com...]
577 | po8crg Fri, Jul 29, 2011 10:55:18am |
As I've just discovered, you can't WebCite Google cache, so, in a few days, it will be difficult to prove how recently it was memory-holed (the last Wayback machine copy is from 30 December 2007).
For the record, though, the Google cache page (with the now-edited text) says "It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on Jun 30, 2011 23:14:14 GMT".
So it was edited in the last month. I wonder why?

You can assume that Geller knows who the email is from. Unfortunately, the passage:

could have been deleted because of Breivik's terrorism rather than because it was from Breivik.
Still, it is a piece of data. Certainly it isn't the only example of Geller covering her tracks. We need more examples. The more she tries to cover her tracks, the more it says about her communications.
The one part of the email that seems like Breivik is:
It's far from impossible to achieve, after all my people has done it every time before, in feats that match the ancient greek, hebrew and british "legends".
