Thousands gather in Oslo to sing song Anders Breivik hates
Up to 40,000 Norwegians have staged an emotionally charged singalong in Oslo near the court building where Anders Behring Breivik is on trial for the murder of 77 people in a protest organisers said showed he had not broken their tolerant society.
"It's we who win," said guitar-strumming folk singer Lillebjørn Nilsen as he led the mass singalong and watched the crowd sway gently in the rain. Many held roses above their heads, and some wept.
The protest followed several days of defiant testimony from Breivik, who has admitted killing his victims but denied criminal guilt.
The crowd chose to sing Children of the Rainbow, a song that extols the type of multicultural society Breivik has said he despises and one he dismissed during the trial as Marxist propaganda.

It's looking like Breivik is not going to be declared insane, which isn't good news. If ruled insane he could be locked up for life -- but if the court says he's not crazy he could be released within his lifetime.

Good sentiment but the song is hogwash. "World where – every sister and every brother – shall live together – like small children of the rainbow," can be filed under 'never going to happen', not till Jesus returns. But it's what you'd expect from Peter Seeger.

At age 19, Guthrie met and married his first wife, Mary Jennings, with whom he had three children,[13] Gwendolyn, Sue, and Bill, all of whom would later die prematurely. With the advent of the Dust Bowl era, Guthrie left Texas, leaving Mary behind, and joined the thousands of Okies who were migrating to California looking for work. Many of his songs are concerned with the conditions faced by these working class people.

Ode To A Loquat On A Rainy Afternoon
By chance or fate I stumbled upon thee
sitting high in your tree, clear for all
to see your colors limned, freshly bathed by
your heavenly shower.
That tree - established there by a loving owner
or perchance an accident, by malicious act of a passing jay,
do you know?
How could other this way traveling
have passed you by?
Did they not see your beauty,
or did they mistake you for a lemon?
Are you mellow? Are you sweet?
Like an apple will you be, or like a pear?
One seed, two seeds, three, or more?
Eternal questions these will not be, for
Once you were part of that tree,
But from now evermore you will be part of me.

I'm guessing your response to the "I have a dream" speech in 1963 would have been "What a bunch of hogwash, none of that stuff MLK is talking about can happen until Jesus comes back." And you would have been very wrong.

At the time, the Dems had huge majorities in both houses, so everything they did was supported by raving racists since the future Dixiecrats made up about one-third of the party. Now they're your party's problem, I'm glad to say.
As for Seeger, the fact remains that he came to support the war at about the same time as most Americans, who were hardly chomping at the bit in 1939 to jump back into a world war just 20 years after the last one. So that hardly makes Seeger anomalous in any way in US history.

Woody Guthrie also died back in the 60's, long before I was born. I'm not going to get bent out of shape over his politics from the 30's and 40's. Given his experiences in Dust Bowl, being a Communist likely made sense to him at the time.

It's weird. You seem to recognize the link to Jesus, in that Seeger is simply repeating Jesus's teachings, but somehow in order for this message not to be "hogwash" Jesus has to return. I don't get that. What's the point of even being a Christian then if you don't think the world He wanted His followers to at least try create is even attainable by man? Is it just about using His sacrifice to attain the ecclesiastical white out of one's sins, or is there also some obligation to spread the Word for sake of creating worldly good?
I'll admit this is coming from the outside, but what you're saying just seems so self contradictory.

Perfection can't be attained by Man, but you still have to continually try to make things better. I'm Christian because I think other people can ultimately get into such a place in Heaven. I really don't think I'll be allowed in. My sins are too great, and I lack most ability to love (instead I act out of a sense of duty and a sense of justice).

So it's naive and unrealistic to strive for a rainbow race, as Seeger sang about.
But it makes perfect sense to hope that the GOP will become a more moderate party in the near future? Let's see: 2006--GOP loses badly, then moves further right; 2008--GOP loses badly again, moves further right again; 2010--GOP wins big, and...continues moving to the right. I'd contend that Seeger's rainbow race is no more a fantasy than a remotely centrist GOP.

DF:
A little history is useful. Guthrie and Seeger came into their own during the 30's and 40's, a time when unions significantly increased their power and established the modern middle class in the US. Working hours, child labor, health care and pensions rules were established.
Since the 70's, unions have been attacked by the right. The fact that you have neither a pension plan nor medical insurance is reflective of that fact.

re: #66 goddamnedfrank
Bart Ehrman, in the conclusion of his latest book:
[...] Jesus would not recognize himself in the preaching of most of his followers today. He knew nothing of our world. He was not a capitalist. He did not believe in free enterprise. He did not support the acquisition of wealth or the good things in life. He did not believe in massive education. He had never heard of democracy. He had nothing to do with going to church on Sunday. He knew nothing of social security, food stamps, welfare, American exceptionalism, unemployment numbers, or immigration. He had no views on tax reform, health care (apart from wanting to heal leprosy), or the welfare state. So far as we know, he expressed no opinion on the ethical issues that plague us today: abortion and reproductive rights, gay marriage, euthanasia, or bombing Iraq. His world was not ours, his concerns were not ours, and—most striking of all—his beliefs were not ours.
Jesus was a first-century Jew, and when we try to make him into a twenty-first-century American we distort everything he was and everything he stood for. Jesus himself was a complete supernaturalist. He believed in the Devil and demons and the forces of evil at work in this world. He knew little—possibly almost nothing—about the workings of the Roman Empire. But what little he knew, he considered evil. He may have considered all government evil unless it was a (future) theocracy to be run by God himself through his messiah. He certainly was no proponent of our political views, whatever our views happen to be.
These forces of evil were asserting their control over the world with increasing vehemence. But Jesus thought that God would soon intervene and destroy them all to bring in his good kingdom on earth. This would not come from human effort—expanding democracy, building up national defense, improving the educational system, winning the war on drugs, and so on. Human effort counted for nothing. It would come from God, when he sent a cosmic judge to destroy the present order and to establish God’s kingdom here on earth. [...]
Painfully straightforward. Point is, the Jesus of history is no more the Jesus of Pete Seeger than he was the Jesus of GWB.

I really don't think I'll be allowed in. My sins are too great, and I lack most ability to love (instead I act out of a sense of duty and a sense of justice).
The wonderful thing about Christianity is the concept of redemption. An honest acceptance of the Lord cleanses the slate of all past actions, no matter how vile. The horrible thing about Christianity is the concept of redemption. An honest acceptance of the Lord cleanses the slate of all past actions, no matter how vile.

I'm an agnostic who sees himself going to heaven (if it exists).

This seems like a long winded way of saying you aren't a good Christian because you simply don't want to be, which is fine if you'd just own it. However all this talk of what you "lack" is really about what you're unwilling to change - the behaviors you're addicted to in spite of identifying them as antithetical to a righteousness existence. Nobody's is carved in stone. If you actually like who you are and don't want to change that's one thing, but the whole passive resignation routine comes off as sadly self pitying.

Right, but if someone believes he is going to hell--as DF does--there's usually a reason why, i.e., something he did or didn't do that was so bad it deeply offended God. I was simply asking for some description of that. That's not an unanswerable question.

OT: All-white killer whale spotted off Russia
The world's only known all-white male killer whale has been spotted in the Pacific Ocean off Russia, scientists announced Monday.
The orca, dubbed "Iceberg" by the scientists, was spotted swimming with a pod of 12 others. Iceberg has a 6.5-foot-high dorsal fin and is at least 16 years old, according to a blog post by Erich Hoyt, co-director of the Far East Russia Orca Project.
Check out a photo gallery of albino creatures
The pod was spotted by scientists from universities in Moscow and St. Petersburg in the waters around the Commander Islands off the Kamchatka Peninsula. The area is part of a marine reserve.Hoyt wrote that two other white orcas have been seen in area, but that Iceberg is the first fully grown male.
“In many ways, Iceberg is a symbol of all that is pure, wild and extraordinarily exciting about what is out there in the ocean waiting to be discovered,” Hoyt said in a statement.
Being an albino is a bit less dangerous when you're an apex predator that lives in a family group.

Amen. I went to Catholic high school after attending a strict evangelical school in Texas for K-3. A full hour of church every day there. Fundamentalists teaching young earth creationism, liberally dishing out corporal punishment in an all white school. They even fired our music teacher because she taught us the Bob Dylan song "Blowin' in the Wind", even though it was 10 years after the song came out. Couldn't stand the place and talked my parents into letting me leave for public school.
Then I was told by a priest when I was 15 that if I looked at porn and masturbated, I was going to hell. I've had no real use for organized religion since then.

Bryan Fischer: Even gays say I was right: Grenell hire was all about homosexuality
It turns out that I was dead right that Mitt Romney's hire of a homosexual activist was all about homosexuality, not foreign policy.
How do I know? Gay activists are saying so, and so is ABC. So there. Told you so.
ABC's has a feature piece today with this title: "Mitt Romney's Appointment of Gay Aide Richard Grenell Signals New Attitude." New attitude about what, pray tell?
ABC says that Grenell's sexual preference for men was not an issue "until a gay-bashing radio host at the American Family Association wrote in his blog that by appointing Grenell, Romney was telling the so-called pro-family community to 'drop dead.'" That would be me.
Then ABC laments, "CNN amplified that message from Bryan Fischer by inviting him on for an interview," in which I said, "The homosexual agenda represents the single-greatest threat to religious liberty and freedom of association in America today."
You can ask the faith community in Hutchinson, Kansas about that statement, by the way. The city council there is about ready to order churches to host gay weddings regardless of the First Amendment and all that rot about freedom of religion.
Fox’s Starnes Misinforms About Kansas Non-Discrimination Ordinance
In reality, the ordinance includes specific exemptions for religious organizations that don’t offer their services to the general public. According to an official Hutchinson Human Relations Commission (HRC) FAQ Sheet (which Starnes even links to in his article):
Religious based groups, non-profit institutions controlled by religious associations or societies and non-profit private clubs that are not open to the public are exempt from the requirements of Chapter 3 now and would continue to be exempt should the proposed amendment become law. There is an exception to this exemption, if any of these groups open their services to the general public.
For example, if a church has a parish hall that they rent out to the general public, they could not discriminate against a gay couple who want to rent the building for a party. If the church only rents the building to their parishioners, they can continue to do so. [emphasis added]

The point is that we are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield.

Let me take this opportunity to mourn, again, at the downward spiral of the documentary/science/natural history programming of the BBC the past couple of years.
The latest show to set off my alarm bells is Divine Women. I've only watched the first part of the first episode, but in that part the host/author presents a highly contorted, and IMO inaccurate, presentation of relevant information about Gobekli Tepe.
The truth of what that site was all about, both originally and how it changed over time, is a matter of heated academic discussion. But the BBC host paints the story in, shall we say, a typical feminist (dare I use that word?) historical revisionism.
IOW, the host appears to be on a quest to de-patriarch religion, to return religion to its matriarchal roots.
Now, no doubt the major Western religions are very patriarchal in nature, but that hardly gives one carte blanche to start making sweeping statements about the past in order to correct a perceived wrong.

Scary? I don't agree with DF, but I have a hard time seeing it as scary in any way shape or form. He is far more consistant and honest about his beliefs than most. And really, since I've been here, he's moderated a considerable bit as well. I'd rather be around him than around Mittens.

Of *course* the working class is benefitted by unions. Hey, Charles, is membership in the AFM good or bad?
For She Who Must Be Obeyed, it is undeniably good. (Oh, and on the Local website, she is a couple of names below Willie Nelson.)
IIRC, when our studio was pumping out platinum albums (1970s), a session musician cost (per AFM rules) approx $125.00 for three sides.
It was OK, as that was considered the cost of doing business, and ensured that one could make a living as a session musician.
Wonder (seriously) what the same cost today.
Our small record company VP (who had worked for Polygram) told me that the AFM collected 10% off the top from the music industry, and his words at that time, "and you know the US music industry is a $10 billion industry. You do the math. And the AFM has never been audited. No one knows what they do with the money."
I don't mean this to be a knock on the AFM.
Make of it what you will.

He's been identified...
Snipers, explosive experts and a police negotiator are attending a potential hostage situation at Tottenham Court Road in central London.
There are reports that four people have been taken hostage by a man, named as Michael Green, at a building in one of the busiest parts of the capital.
The 50-year-old is reported to be angry he did not get an HGV Licence and had a grudge against someone in the building over the matter.
Mr Green stormed into Shropshire House, which houses Advantage HGV, about midday saying he had nothing to live for.
He is said to have a gas cannister tied to him and reportedly threatened to blow himself up.
Police were called when Mr Green was throwing computers, furniture and paper from the fifth floor of the building.
The police negotiator has made contact with Mr Green, but objects were still being thrown from the window will they were communicating.

Secret Service probing foreign hard-partying allegations going back to 2000
(CBS News) WASHINGTON - The Secret Service sex scandal is getting wider.
The dispute over payment to a prostitute in Cartagena, Colombia, by a Secret Service agent has triggered new charges of hard partying and impropriety by agents around the globe.
Two weeks after the incident in Cartagena, the Secret Service is working to quickly wrap up that portion of the scandal, but the U.S. government is investigating reports of unprofessional behavior and rule-breaking by agents in four countries, going back 12 years.
On Capitol Hill, there are growing demands for an outside agency to take over the probe.
Seattle CBS affiliate KIRO-TV reported Thursday that Secret Service agents visited a strip club in El Salvador -- by the vanload -- in advance of President Obama's trip there in March 2011.
The Secret Service is looking into that report and some others, including accusations that Secret Service personnel traveling in 2009 with former President Clinton partied at strip clubs on a visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and that agents and White House staffers went to a Moscow night club known for its sexually charged atmosphere prior to Mr. Clinton's trip to Russia in 2000.
The new allegations come soon after a hearing Wednesday in which senators were assured that the Colombia scandal was an isolated incident.

Journalism has bigger problems than whatever you think Sharpton and Jackson are doing.
We had an White House stenography pool instead of a press in the run up to the Iraq War and we are given the dumbed down versions of Time and Newsweek and other magazines in this country. You have to go outside the United States to find anything resembling actual news reporting. That has fuck all to do with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and everything to do with the 24-hour news cycle which has turned news into entertainment.

Yeah. It's all the "lamestream" media's fault that George Zimmerman murdered Trayvon Martin. Let's ignore ALEC and the National Rifle Association. Go for the easy target. Blame the media!!111ty.
And the fact that it was the media attention that resulted in any action being taken at all. Perfect? Nope. Effective? Absolutely.

I was working with my trusty Tamron 28-300 VR 3.5-5.6 at around 150-200mm. Since there was little time to plan/set the shot (and I had scouted it this morning), I missed the closer approach to 1WTC in favor of the sightline I took. Frankly, I thought it would be a bit higher to catch it above the WFC altogether, but it was a pretty damned impressive sight to behold in any case.
Very nice work to get it given the speed it was moving as well.
My own photography this morning was rather more mundane. Some B&Ws of a "usual suspect" bridge that I'll miss once we move up north and a few cliche flowers. No shuttles here in flyover, alas.

Your mention of Time reminded me of yesterday's Digby and her reporting of Colbert's brilliant bit at the Time 100 thingie...
Of course, all of us should be honored to be listed on the TIME 100 alongside the two men who will be slugging it out in the fall: President Obama, and the man who would defeat him, David Koch.
Give it up everybody. David Koch.
Little known fact -- David, nice to see you again, sir.
Little known fact, David's brother Charles Koch is actually even more influential. Charles pledged $40 million to defeat President Obama, David only $20 million. That's kind of cheap, Dave.
Sure, he's all for buying the elections, but when the bill for democracy comes up, Dave's always in the men's room. I'm sorry, I must have left Wisconsin in my other coat.
I was particularly excited to meet David Koch earlier tonight because I have a Super PAC, Colbert Super PAC, and I am -- thank you, thank you -- and I am happy to announce Mr. Koch has pledged $5 million to my Super PAC. And the great thing is, thanks to federal election law, there's no way for you to ever know whether that's a joke.
Read the whole thing. Balls of steel, indeed.

Taliban Website Hacked As Afghan Cyberwar Heats Up
Unidentified hackers have broken into the main website of the Afghan Taliban, replacing the usual militant claims of victories with images of executions carried out by the militants and messages condemning violence in English, Arabic, and Pashto.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the Reuters news agency that the Al-Amara website was broken into twice on April 26 and blamed Western intelligence agencies.

Probably nuts even before playing with mercury. Guy was a right wing wackaloon - had copies of the Turner Diaries and other assorted items; the attack against Albany Medical Center was apparently in response to billing issues he had:
When Albany Police and FBI agents searched his home and car in Ulster County last month, they found two containers filled with mercury — one from a dental supply company — 21 guns and about 50 knives. Officers found "The Turner Diaries," a novel associated with domestic terrorism, and a swastika on his wall. They also found correspondence with Albany Med that described Kimber's complaints and concerns over medical bills and treatment he received at the hospital in December 2010.

To note, Klout is a California-based company that checks people's "online influence" using its own algorithm with user data from big social networking sites like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, just to name a few. The higher your Klout score on their system, the better it is for your social "status".

Romney rescues capsized boaters
Jul 06, 2003
Waltham — Gov. Mitt Romney rode to the rescue over the weekend during a vacation trip -- using his Jet Ski to help pluck a New Jersey family and their dog out of Lake Winnipesaukee after their boat sank.
...The governor pulled the two younger women aboard his three-seater Jet Ski and zoomed back to shore, while his sons helped the mother of the family onto their vehicle.
In the middle of the rescue, the governor actually took a dunking himself -- thrown off the Jet Ski as one anxious boater scrambled aboard and tipped the craft off-balance.
The rescuing Romneys also managed to snatch the family dog, McKenzie, from a watery grave -- grabbing the Scottish terrier first because it was the only passenger without a lifejacket.
"It looked like it wasn't going to last much longer," said Josh, who held the waterlogged pooch on the ride back to shore.
With Josh and Craig hovering nearby, the three men treaded water until the governor returned and made two more trips to ferry them back.
Wait a minute, I thought Mitt hates dogs. This must be a fabricated story!

I don't like it when people party to that extent on my money. Off Duty or On.
Is it hypocritical to think that my tax dollars (if they were on duty or out of the country on an expense account) should be involved in prostitution.
Has it been determined that they were actually treating this as a travel/"business" expense? I admit to not really following this story all that carefully, beyond the fact that apparently they weren't doing anything actually illegal in those countries. I mean, there are obviously other things involved that make the actions a problem but I'm curious.

Good sentiment but the song is hogwash. "World where – every sister and every brother – shall live together – like small children of the rainbow," can be filed under 'never going to happen', not till Jesus returns. But it's what you'd expect from Peter Seeger.
Premise A: never going to happen.
Premise B: not till Jesus returns.
Conclusion: Jesus will never return.

You probably have never heard of New Mexico politician Michael Wiener. Neither had a Seattle photographer when he ran into him one night last month in a Philippines sex district.
Wiener was spending time in the Angeles City red light district when he apparently stopped a photographer on the street to take a picture of him posing with a quartet of scantily clad women in an area well known as a hub of prostitution.
It turned out, however, the photographer was not just some American tourist taking in the sights. He was a professional photographer named John Keatley, who was in the country documenting the sex tourism industry.
Now, the Bernalillo County commissioner and ex-state senator is facing questions about what exactly he was doing there after the photographer posted the photos online along with a description of the encounter.
