This reminds me of where I started to get really mad with the media. I'd always found them flawed, but during the second gulf war they started to conflate the number of dead with the 'casualties'. Casualties include the wounded soldiers, the AWOL, the lost in any way. That's what it has always meant. But somehow during the second invasion of Iraq the media-- and a lot of the public-- lost sight of that. All anyone cared about was the number of dead.

Being disabled sucks. Experiencing severe trauma can fuck you up. Experiencing severe trauma that also disables you is one of the hardest psychiatric challenges to overcome.

Never forget the wounded warriors.

All that exists for any president are the odds. On March 17 the U.N. gave Obama his resolution. The next day he flew to Brazil and was there on the 19th, when the bombing began. All we have to say is that we think slaughtering your own citizens is unacceptable and that we’re intervening.” Four days after the bombing began, Gingrich went on the Today show to say he wouldn’t have intervened and was quoted on Politico as saying, “It is impossible to make sense of the standard of intervention in Libya except opportunism and news media publicity.” The tone of the news coverage shifted dramatically, too. One day it was “Why aren’t you doing anything?” The next it was “What have you gotten us into?” As one White House staffer puts it, “All the people who had been demanding intervention went nuts after we intervened and said it was outrageous. That’s because the controversy machine is bigger than the reality machine.”

Two of them were badly wounded, the last one psychologically screwed up after he got left behind during an extraction and had to make his own way back across fifty miles of Afghan mountains.

All three of them had good, strong relationships that nonetheless broke under the strain. It made it that much more tragic that it wasn't anybody's fault, it's really hard to live with a guy who'll wake up screaming in the middle of the night, or who will rage out at any perception of being abandoned. Really, the guy who wasn't physically injured came out the worst. Being left behind by the guys he trusted most really tore him up. He forgave them, but man.

Walker himself had been the target of an assassination attempt a few months before the Kennedy murder. It is widely believed that the failed assassin was none other than Lee Harvey Oswald.
Even more strangely, Walker had commanded the federal troops who successfully forced the integration of Little Rock Central High School in 1957. He had complained constantly through back channels that his orders were unconstitutional and immoral but he had carried them out.

You know, the more I think about it, Republicans couldn't really control their extremists once they got into power even back then. That 1946-48 bunch made the House Un-American Activities Committee a permanent fixture, and the '53-55 bunch went all out on McCarthyism.

I Used to hold Islam in contempt, in spite of having called some Muslims friends when in the M.E.; then some people like CL made me realize that, however strange the connection, I should not generalize so.

Now, unfortunately, I find myself back pigeonholing them along with the Papists regardless of the distinctions in violent expressions so far.

Name one war, or simmering war, these days that does not have a religious foundation (and don't call it cultural instead).

This is general rant, not specifically directed at you.

I dig the sentiment. I have a healthy disdain for religion but it's not the cause of the world's problems. People are dicks, some people are bigger dicks than others. They use a variety of excuses (religion, self righteous indignation, outrageous outrage, etc) to pursue the same goals of controlling other people and advancing their pets causes and ideologies.
I find myself backtracking a bit these days but I think of it as getting back to my roots. I support free speech and those who want to censor and control others are dicks. They'll always find an excuse to be offended, they can't be appeased and it's pointless and harmful to try. Fuck 'em.

God is supposed to be an entity powerful enough to have created the entire universe, and is supposed to be omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. The idea that it needs human beings to defend its honor is laughable. If such a being actually existed, not only would they know what everyone thinks about them already, but they'd be in a position to do something about it without your help, advice, or input.

This is kind of funny - this week I wanted to ban some referrer spammers that were linking to sites peddling Cialis, so I started to do a regex that would block out any referrers that had *cialis* in their URL.

Then I realized this would also block out any referrers that had "socialist" in their URL.

Another commie plot? Make of it what you will.

How did you feel about the series Big Love, especially since it portrayed polygyny which I understand has been abolished in the mainstream for a long time? Did that make it super annoying for you, or did you consider it an okay thing since it was at least showing Mormons fairly typical families (plural wives & artistic license aside)?

I've never watched it, and we don't consider them Mormons. After it was abolished, practicing polygamy will get you kicked out of the church.

It's mildly annoying, because people think those are what mainstream Mormons are like.

I'm not sure there has ever been a media depiction of a normal, garden-variety LDS family. Why? Because we're really, really boring.

Imagine a normal family with no alcohol, coffee, tea, smoking, or R-rated movies. Or swearing. That's about it. Lots of ice cream, though. Mormons, in general, love ice cream.

They're attractive women, those Kardashian sisters...but I can't for the life of me understand why they're so special. And I really don't want to know. I understand one had a relatively short marriage, but who the fuck cares? Did we just pull them out of a hat because we were jealous of the tabloid culture in the UK and wanted to show off our ability to be shallow? I thought we proved that already with Bush.

So on the topic of a nuclear Iran, Arms control wonk has a great piece about what exactly "enough uranium to make a bomb" means. The take-away is that Iran has enough enriched uranium to make a bomb now, and has had that much for quite a while. The decision to build a bomb is a political one, not a technical one. What this means is that political red lines around uranium enrichment are bunk.

But to make a long story short, Cochran and Paine estimate that a relatively low-tech bomb program would need between 8 and 16 kg of U-235 for a pure fission weapon (an “A-bomb”), depending on how much explosive yield is desired. A medium-tech program, which is perhaps where Iran fits thanks in part to the foreign assistance described in GOV/2011/65, would need between 4 and 9 kg of U-235.

As a reminder, Iran already has about 11 kg of U-235 in the almost-20% U-235 UF6 that’s sitting in storage, and about 20 kg of U-235 available if you throw in other material that could be turned back into UF6. What’s more, GOV/2012/37, the source of the UF6 numbers above, is already out of date. As Table 3 of the report shows, more UF6 enriched to almost 20% U-235 is accumulating rapidly.

Totally OT--I love my family but the next time Mr. EmmmieG says he's taking the boys fishing, I'm slashing the tires.

He takes them to stocked fishing places, which means that they will catch something. Our fridge smells like fish. Our kitchen smells like fish.

I hate fish.

The rule is: They clean, cook, and then clean again.
