One day someone is going to explain to me why the bar is so high Obama that he can't have one off night and so low for R-Money that all he needs is one good night after months of making an ass of himself and a video in which he insults half the country.

If there were a dozen debates it wouldn't matter, but there are only 3.

I just want the President to look at Romney in the face and correct him when he lies. In my opinion the bar should always be at least this high.

When Romney inserts a dozen lies into a two minute segment - the Gish Gallop - there is no way to do this. It takes longer to disassemble a lie than it takes to tell one. If Obama looked Romney in the face and just said "liar" he would be the one who looked bad. It's a no-win.

According to Ynet: Downed drone: Iran testing Israel's capabilities

Unmanned aircraft shot down by F-16 jets in south Israel was apparently launched from Lebanon by Hezbollah, or perhaps even by the Iranians themselves

The drone was apparently launched by Iran or one of its allies to test the IDF's detection and interception capabilities, and perhaps even to search for specific targets in south Israel. The drone apparently began its flight in Lebanon and then headed in the direction of Gaza's coastline after flying over the Mediterranean Sea. This route was chosen not only because it utilized the depth of the sea's airspace, but also because Israeli UAVs regularly hover above Gaza.
...
The drone's operators may have planned to take advantage of this fact in hopes of confusing Israel's detection and interception systems. However, the drone was detected while it was still flying over the Mediterranean Sea and was downed a half-hour later over the south Mount Hebron area after IAF jets made certain it was not carrying any explosives and that its main mission was intelligence gathering.

With video.

Also the face-to-face debate was only 90 minutes long. What has followed has been hundreds of collective hours of analysis of what was said. Romney's lies were pounced on immediately along with his PBS nonsense which will be remembered just as his Bain and 47% PR nightmares. This is why I'm giving an overall win to Obama despite his seemingly lackluster performance at the debate. What Romney said there has given the Obama campaign a tremendous amount of material to drive home their overall message that Romney is a lying scumbucket who cannot be trusted. Romney didn't get a thing out of it to use against Obama.

The more liberals bitch and get disheartened by this, the more conservatives seize on that for their "win". The media needs a horserace for ratings and revenue and they latch onto it too. This is a problem on the Dem side, getting dispirited way too easy. There's a lot at stake here, but one debate isn't going to decide the election. Not to mention that Romney was so anxious to use his 47% comment walk-back comeback that he got Hannity to bring it up so he could. By not bringing it up at the debate, Obama denied Romney the chance to use that particular lie when 47 million potential voters were watching so Romney could only preach it to his tiny choir.

About the debates, Romney would love it if Obama tried to make it about one-liners. If Obama tries something like "There you go again", it will be like Michael Dukakis in the Tank, in that 1988 TV commercial. That is NOT Obama's style.

The one thing I cannot forgive Obama for is appearing so disengaged and professorial. This reminded me (again, back to the 1988 campaign) when Bernard Shaw asked Dukakis, during a debate with George H. W. Bush, if he would support the death penalty if Kitty Dukakis, his wife, were raped and murdered. Dukakis gave a PROFESSORIAL lecture, which at the time I didn't think was such a bad thing, but people didn't like that at all. It came off that Dukakis had no passion.

If Obama does the disengaged, professorial, wonk thing in the next debate, or god forbid in the next two debates, it may really work against him. What I'm trying to say is, the one thing that I cannot make excuses for, that I don't think does Obama any good, is the lack of passion. He's the President, and he should be able to handle a gross, pathological liar, AND not lose his CARING.

In the Democratic National Convention a month ago, first Michelle, then Barack, gave speeches that really showed they CARED. They MUST go back to that.

I don't know. Maybe some people vote like I shop. I can spend two hours in one store making up my mind. I have to marinate in any possible purchase. Only one of my friends likes to shop with me me because she's the same way. Everybody else hates it and I don't subject boyfriends to it because they'd probably dump me!

Maybe a small few voters pay too much attention to make up their minds. Especially when they don't have strong beliefs about anything in particular.

The rook isn't a strong piece until the endgame. It has the same long reach of the bishop, but unlike the bishops, both rooks can threaten all squares of the board. The problems with the rook are getting it out of its own private traffic jam on the back row,and having clear rows for it to move.

When my brother first "taught" me how to play, he'd get his rook in my first row and on his next move just wipe that row clear of all the pieces.

Hmmm, that has something in common with Paul Ryan's economic plans too: Ignore how things really work.

I liked palying chess. I was actually a master player once upon a time. Now, I look at a chess board and I can't imagine what move to make. One big misconception about chess: Many people believe that it's a game that forces you to think a few moves ahead. But your opponent doesn't always do what you expect him to. I found that chess, at least at a high level, is all about improvisation and endurance. I have never been as physically exhausted as when I would try to stand up after a good game of chess.

I'm thinking of implementing this, with a fall-back for browsers that can't handle the HTML5 method.

Rachel Maddow had a piece yesterday explaining that Alabama Republicans, instead of going across the border to panhandle Florida like you guys, are flying to places like Ohio and canvassing there. She made a good point that going to Florida makes sense, similar cultures, and familiar accents would be welcome there, but that a bunch of AL Republicans reinforcing stereotypes in Dayton Ohio isn't going to sell all that well.

Anyway it looks like the 'Bama GOP is going to wait two more weeks before mobilizing. Registrations will be long closed by the time they get there so they've really missed what could be the most crucial part of the game. Also, when they do go to Florida it's going to be Jacksonville, for four days only.

Some asshole didn't clean the mucky algae-whatever from the side of the tennis court, and she fell down running for a ball and her ankle collapsed under her. Luckily didn't hit her head.

Bright side: sports injury.

Not klutzy at all.

right down at the ankle. They're doing a CT scan to see if it sheared any tendons or ligaments. Really hoping not. She was just getting back into shape too.

They're going to be doing tests and stuff for awhile so I came home to start cooking so she'll have nice stuff, and so that the apartment will smell like good cooking smells. She likes that a lot.

Bummer. I got a hairline fracture right down by the ankle in the tibia. Hurt like heck the day I got it. Wound up in a cast. Being that it was in the 70s it was one of those old fashioned plaster casts. That was a pain in the rear end. Stinky too towards the end. When they removed the cast my lower leg felt like it weighed an ounce.

Heh. That'd be funny but impractical. She's either going to stay with her friends for the first week or so in an elevator building or just hop it. She still thinks she's going into lab tomorrow. I'm going to prevent that.

I just realized the U.S. World and News Report is owned by the same guy who also owns the New York Daily News. The guy who runs it (Mort Zuckerman) has apparently gone full wingnut over the past 4 years which explains why the Daily News is now out-Posting the Post.

I always found something off about the U.S. News and World Report.

When I was in HS debate we referred to it as Useless News and World Distortion and considered it to be near worthless as a source.

Newsbleat & noTime (as in no time for fact checking) were ok, but if you had to use a magazine, Economist was far preferred. This was the early '80's.

We called it "U.S. Views and World Distort" 40 years ago.

Your memory fails you, it was "Useless Views and World Distort".

My college roommate's high school debate coach wouldn't allow them to use it.

I like that one. It is the question everyone should ask when ever either R&R says something.

I've noticed that the nasty political ads that used to show up in the sidebars are gone for now. I'm just going to take this as a sign that the boil is being lanced and the Dark Lord's resources are needed elsewhere :)
