I could see how kids could lose those or have them bullied away from them (like the lunch money of old). $300,000 seems an awfully high price to pay though. That would pay for a bunch o' Wheaties.

It's a lot of money, and you know the system is going to break down, and there will be no money to fix it.
It seems to me that it would not be that hard to set up an efficient system involving a part-time employee for a fraction of the cost.

Back in the dark ages when I was in junior high, we had students do the cashiering in exchange for a free lunch, rotating on like a two week or so basis. I loved it since it meant I could spend my lunch money on Beatles records and stuff. It was a great system that really didn't cost the school district a thing.

SpaceX has its second mission (first operational) to the ISS set for launch tonight.
SpaceX rocket readied for 1st cargo mission
(CNN) -- Controllers at NASA's Kennedy Space Center spent Sunday preparing for the first commercial cargo flight to the International Space Station, readying a SpaceX rocket for an evening launch.
The Falcon 9 rocket with its unmanned Dragon capsule is scheduled for liftoff at 8:35 p.m. if the weather holds. It will be the first of a dozen NASA-contracted flights to resupply the International Space Station, at a total cost of $1.6 billion.
[...]
The unmanned capsule will be packed with about 1,000 pounds of cargo -- everything from low-sodium food kits to clothing and computer hard drives. It's slated to return in late October with about 2,000 pounds, including scientific experiments and failed equipment that can be repaired and sent back, ISS Program Manager Mike Suffredini said.
NASA TV is broadcasting the launch live.

Killgore, it is not appropriate to list Iran's Press TV and any US network together like that. Not MSNBC, not even FNC. Because Dkos has shown much support for Chavez over the years. He's a regular feature in their AntiCapitalist Roundups (or whatever they're called).
Here's a Chavista on that very diary....
President Carter (4+ / 0-)
Jimmy Carter, somebody we all respect, had this to say about the electoral process in Venezuela.“As a matter of fact, of the 92 elections that we’ve monitored, I would say the election process in Venezuela is the best in the world."
As a student of history of Latin America, this is a huge day for the global south. We have a neoliberal who wants to turn the county backwards from cutting poverty and hand the country back in the hands of the powerful. Chavez is far from perfect, but he fights with the poor on his mind. He is not a dictator as they have fair elections and has been popular with the people of Venezuela.
He has even survived a U.S CIA backed coup attempt. Liberals and socialists around the world who stand on the side of the lower class should stand against the neoliberal neocons in Venezuela and around the world.

Some history.
Reynaldo Bignone
President of Argentina
General. Dictator
July 1, 1982 – December 10, 1983
Argentine general election, 1983
Winner?
Raúl Alfonsín
Radical Civic Union
December 10, 1983 – July 8, 1989
So after years of military dictatorship Argentina elected, democratically elected, a new president to replace the goon squad responsible for the murder of over 30,000 Argentine citizens?
The US response?
Relations with the United States suffered when Alfonsín terminated the previous regime's support for the Contras, and two meetings with U.S. President Ronald Reagan failed to ease Reagan's opposition to economic concessions towards Argentina.

Wow, what a dumb reason.
Of course, as a libertarian-- sorry, classical liberal--you're about a zillion miles away from progressive anyway. Classical liberals are anti-union, anti-regulation, and in almost no way resemble progressives.
So maybe you're not a progressive because you lack progressive values, rather than because some kids on DKOS like Chavez?
Maybe. Obviously this is a tough one.

Some history.
Reynaldo Bignone
President of Argentina
General. Dictator
July 1, 1982 – December 10, 1983Argentine general election, 1983
Winner?
Raúl Alfonsín
Radical Civic Union
December 10, 1983 – July 8, 1989So after years of military dictatorship Argentina elected, democratically elected, a new president to replace the goon squad responsible for the murder of over 30,000 Argentine citizens?
The US response?
Ousting the Sandanistas was a key Reagan priority, and he wasn't going to make concessions to a president of a Latin American nation seen as favoring them. Summits had no effect because the two men had different goals.

re: #91 Killgore Trout
Because Dkos has shown much support for Chavez over the years. He's a regular feature in their AntiCapitalist Roundups (or whatever they're called).
Here's a Chavista on that very diary....
Just because we don't like Chavez doesn't mean he wasn't democratically elected. The failed coup only bolstered his support and fueled both his and his country's paranoid angst against foreign interference. That reaction is understandable, something that would have happened anywhere suffering the failed coup of a democratically elected government.

I see. So he would have kept supporting the previous dictators 100 percent had they not invaded the Falklands. Interesting priorities there. But of course he would and did and this is a clear example. Argentina finally got a democratically elected president and Reagan basically told them to go fuck themselves.

Psychology via TCP/IP isn't really feasible. We can't know why Killgore does what he does. We don't know why, for example, he'd present a video of Christopher Hitchens in Canada to speak against government censorship, giving a speech about government censorship, citing case after case of government censorship, and then claim that the speech wasn't at all about government censorship. Was he trolling? Did he not watch the video? Does he have the biggest case of confirmation bias ever?
It's impossible to tell motive and reason. There's any number of possible explanations for even the stupidest of human actions.

"My language was harsh, and, in reality, not true. Fact is, I did feel something. That's why I was so angry. I was angry that five soldiers—the real heroes in my mind—were killed the same day and got far lower billing in the newscasts. I was angry that 51 American soldiers paid the ultimate price for Bush's folly in Iraq in March alone. I was angry that these mercenaries make more in a day than our brave men and women in uniform make in an entire month. I was angry that the US is funding private armies, paying them $30,000 per soldier, per month, while the Bush administration tries to cut our soldiers' hazard pay. I was angry that these mercenaries would leave their wives and children behind to enter a war zone on their own violition [sic]. So I struck back." -- Markos

The manner of death and treatment of bodies is why the media pays so much attention to them. I doubt anyone offended by Markos's comments know anything about the deaths of the soldiers on that day.
I don't like to demonize private security contractors; they're mainly ex-military guys with discipline. Their usage has been sloppy, but that was mainly an aspect of how badly the war was planned. So I disagree with Markos on the immorality of being a 'mercenary', but since he's ex-military and I'm not, I expect he's got more on the line on this one.

While their deaths (and subsequent desecration) were tragic, they were paid mercenaries (and paid well - about $30,000 a month--tax free--in US taxpayer dollars to each--figure Blackwater had at least a 90% markup per person that they charged the US for these trained soldiers). By comparison, enlisted soldiers who were also at risk (and dying) in Iraq got paid about $1,600 a month in base salary and didn't have the option of working for five months and saying, "Fuck it, I think I'll take my money and go home."
In other words, they were paid for the risks they took. That doesn't reduce the tragedy of their deaths, but they were there by choice and for profit.

It's pretty easy to do half-baked crap. Fark was full of shit like this, it's actually one of the reasons I left. Imagine, like, six Killgores all in the same thread. Nothing could get discussed, they were all just competing for attention and to be the one covering themselves in the most martyr juice.

There's a massive difference between being pepper sprayed and being killed, mutilated and strung up from a bridge. One of the many differences is the you're fine an hour later. So I struck back."

Venezuelans Return Chávez to Presidency
Official results from the country's National Election Agency or CNE showed Mr. Chávez and his United Socialist Party of Venezuela winning 54.5% of the votes compared to 45% for Mr. Capriles, a young former state governor who ran a spirited campaign of change.
The win gives Mr. Chávez, a former army tank commander, a mandate to press ahead with his self-styled Socialist revolution. Mr. Chávez has vowed to give more power to grass-roots community councils to carry out social programs with state money—a move critics say would undermine democratically elected mayors across the country.
Sounds like Chavez is cutting off his opponents at the knees again, since Capriles made his bones as governor of his province with social programs. Even if Chavez dies in office from the cancer he has, he's setting up his cronies to be his successors; he's not gonna give his opponents any way to come at him (or his successors) any more if he can help it.

OK, the Packers fan is here, and the Bears won, while Luck was not on Green Bay's side, so its time for the Happy Dance:

Capriles had to make do in his governorship with limited funds; Chavez diverted them away from his state, and away from a man who was clearly going to be a challenger.

That's ok DF. I'm expecting this kind of season due to the ineptitude of the coaches in GB. The pity is they'll scapegoat the Defensive Coordinator at the end of the season (8-8 is my bet).

I was in Cancun when it happened. Drinking with a Welshman whose friend had won the lottery.

Well, we'll have to wait till late November to see how our teams stack up against the Vikings. The Bears play Minnesota on November 25th at Soldier Field, then the Vikings travel to Lambeau Field to face the Packers December 2nd, before going home to the Metro dome and another game against the Bears on Dec. 9th. Their 2nd game against Green Bay is at home on December 30th.

The lone published exit poll I've seen had Capriles winning by 51.3 to 48.06, eyebrow raising but hardly outside the margin of error for exit polls. There is no absentee voting in Venezuela so US based expats had to drive to a consular city like New Orleans to cast a vote. It's also reasonable to think that Chavez supporters were going to be poorer, younger and harder to poll. Venezuela is represented by a single time zone, so the quick reporting of results isn't that surprising either. This doesn't add up to an obvious case of fraud at this point.

Why? Why hasn't Chavez managed to end the poverty, or at least start making serious progress? It's not like he hasn't had time.

Because he's a self-aggrandizing economic illiterate. A Juan Peron without Evita.

Yes, but if his ideas worked, he's had something like a decade to give it a go.

He built a lot of soccer stadiums:

(and got a healthy kickback from the concrete franchise)
