About time.
Harry Reid is set to go nuclear
“With Senate Republicans blocking a third Obama nomination to the powerful D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, a senior Senate Democratic leadership aide tells me Reid is now all but certain to move to change the Senate rules by simple majority — doing away with the filibuster on executive and judicial nominations, with the exception of the Supreme Court - as early as this week.
“Reid has become personally invested in the idea that Dems have no choice other than to change the rules if the Senate is going to remain a viable and functioning institution,” the aide says. That’s a long journey from where Reid was only 10 months ago, when he agreed to a toothless filibuster reform deal out of a real reluctance to change the rules by simple majority. Asked to explain the evolution, the aide said: “It’s been a long process. But this is the only thing we can do to keep the Senate performing its basic duties.”
“They’ve [Republicans] boxed themselves in — their position allows them no leeway,” the aide says, in characterizing Reid’s thinking. “This is not a trumped up argument about the qualification of a nominee. They are saying, `we don’t want any nominees.’”

Hola Lizards!
Ran the job interview gauntlet for a data visualization software company today. I was there for over four hours. Did the HR screening, then the software exercise, then the critical thinking interview, then the sales pitch where you have to sell pens, then a final interview with the recruiting director. I’m exhausted. When I was leaving, the employees I shared an elevator with told me I got the abridged version of the usual interview process. Oy. I can’t even imagine the real one.
Now that it’s done, I am confused and not sure how to take things. Instead of direct sales, they think my strengths lean more towards their Existing Business/Customer Success Manager role and want to set up a follow-up interview with me to talk to the director of that program for the end of the week. Thing is, that team hasn’t expanded to Austin yet, although they’re planning on expanding here “soon”.
I know that the critical thinking interviewer liked me. He offered to connect on LinkedIn and complimented me. The sales pitch guy told me I was successful at winning him over. I also flew through the software exercises without breaking a sweat, and I’m being offered a follow-up call, so they must have liked something about me. I just don’t know how to take being told that I’m more suited to a team that hasn’t expanded to here yet.

An honor student from Lubbock was shot and killed by a Liberty University police officer early this morning. The shooting happened in a women’s residence hall after the male student reportedly attacked the officer with a hammer. The dead student, one Joshua Hathaway, was salutatorian at Lubbock’s Southcrest Christian High this spring and was attending Liberty on a Fulbright scholarship.

No kidding. Nothing makes sense here. Note that Hathaway first approached the officer claiming that he had been robbed and his car stolen. He then inexplicably attacked the officer with a hammer. My understanding of the Fulbright is that it would not be used in this country unless the recipient is not an American citizen. Hathaway may not be an American, or the source, KCBD TV, may be in error. The same source put Lynchburg “500 miles west of Lubbock” (which would be in Arizona) so I suspect the second possibility.

Wiki says that OJ’s defense ran $3 million to $6 million. He had a lot more attorneys that had far higher profiles (even recognizing that inflation and whatnot would change that number dramatically).

I think what is really lacking in the outreach against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault is the concept that it isn’t ALL MEN. While we can’t put a red star on the forehead of predators, we need to be reminded that A small group is very good at getting what they want and evading the law. There is no reason to put-up with it. Oh, the irony! While Conservatives bitch loudly about Obama leaving ‘under God’ out of his reading of the Gettysburg Address, the NRCC posts this to their FB page.
Notice anything?

No “under god” after Nation.
We have a WINNER!
Even more ironically, some wingnut posted on that thread about the OUTRAGEOUS OUTRAGE.

Thanks! I don’t do the Twitters.
The RWNJs won’t notice—they’re too busy pounding their memes about that awful Kenyan Marxist in the WH, among other character assassinations of the President.

Polls have closed in Albuquerque. Follow reports on results of the attempt to ban abortions in the city at this blog:
Albuquerque will have attention from throughout the nation tonight when results come in from a proposal to ban abortions after 20 weeks.
Albuquerque would be the first municipality to institute such a ban if it passes — and the attention on the controversial issue is driving a large turnout for the election. Early voting doubled that of the municipal elections last month that featured a mayoral election. Day of voting seems to be keeping pace with the election day voting in October, meaning this election could have tens of thousands more votes than the mayoral election.
And on a local level there is a very important race in Albuquerque’s city council district 7. Incumbent Janice Arnold-Jones received just under 50 percent of the vote in a three-way race in October and so faced a runoff against Diane Gibson.
With the results from October’s elections, that means control of the city council will come down to this election. Arnold-Jones is a Republican and Gibson is a Democrat. While Albuquerque city elections are officially non-partisan, voting on the city council often ends up on party lines.
NM Telegram will try to keep up with all the action throughout the evening from the final vote rush after work, through the end of voting and until the last results are tallied in the liveblog below.
