Thursday Night Jam: Laura Marling, “False Hope”

My worst problem is I don’t sleep at night
Music • Views: 31,731

YouTube

From the new album Short Movie, a terrific song by British songwriter Laura Marling.

Is it still okay that I don’t know how to be alone?
Would it be okay if I don’t come home tonight?
We shared an apartment on the upper west side
And my worst problem is I don’t sleep at night
Woman downstairs just lost her mind
And I don’t care how, I don’t care why
Why I know false hope
Why I know false hope

Storm hits the city and the lights go out
Before I can prepare
The whole downtown looks dark like no one lives there
Shared an apartment on the upper west side
My worst problem is I don’t sleep at night
Woman downstairs just lost her mind,
And I don’t care how, I don’t care why
Why I know false hope
Why I know false hope

She’ll be alright tomorrow
Neither of us is gonna sleep tonight
We’ve false hope
I hear you begging through the wall
Like a dying animal’s last call

Is it still okay that I don’t know how to be at all?
There’s a party uptown and I just don’t feel like I belong at all
Do I?
Shared an apartment on the upper west side
My worst problem is I don’t sleep at night
Woman downstairs just lost her mind,
And I don’t care how, I surely don’t care why
Why I know false hope
Why I know false hope

Shooting an Uzi while hung over is also not a bright idea.

Shooting a tank canon while hung over is entertaining though… (whistles innocently…) Shoving a oil soaked roll of TP into the gun tube ahead of the round is even more fun…

Some have expressed surprise at Chuck’s ability to travel. It’s easy: he just gives himself an enema and mails himself to his destination in a legal size envelope.

Continuing on with my one-man effort to revive the popularity of opera… I notice that there is an interesting parallel between how I feel about various sub-genres and my American-culture cast tastes.

For example, Italian operas no doubt contain some of the prettiest songs ever written, but after I listen to them I walk away with the feeling that yes, that was a pretty song, but for some reason a full opera from that late Italian period (around the turn of the century) leaves me feeling like there is no big picture, musically speaking. If I might make a strange comparison, Italian opera is much like American professional wrestling.

I also get a kick when an Italian opera singer does a cover of an American pop tune (even if it is Cole Porter):

The dead are suspected to be Rohingya Muslim refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh who starved to death or died of disease while awaiting payment of ransoms to be smuggled into Malaysia by a trafficking comprised of Thai, Myanmar and Malaysian nationals.

Some of the bodies were buried, while others were covered with clothing and blankets at a shelter in the mountains of southern Songkla province, police Col. Weerasant Tharnpiem told The Associated Press.

“There are 32 graves, four bodies have now been exhumed and are on their way… to hospital to for an autopsy,” Sathit Thamsuwan a rescue worker, who was at the scene soon after the site was found, told assembled media around 3.30pm. Another body was found above ground. More

101 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate  May 1, 2015 3:45:44am

re: #99 Justanotherhuman

Human trafficking is a big, big problem in SE Asia. Girls are either sold as “brides” to men abroad — especially China — or as future prostitutes all over the region. Older people, especially men, are trafficked to the Arabian Peninsula as indentured workers. Women end up as domestic workers in Hong Kong and the Arabian Peninsula, and on and on.

Poverty and a lack of education drives families and individuals to extremes, and there are plenty of evil people around to take advantage of their desperation.

Too many. They are smuggled across border in shipping containers or trucks with no ventilation, no food or water. It’s the Atlantic slave trade all over again.

105 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate  May 1, 2015 4:14:14am

I should add that trafficking happens within China’s borders, but in a different way. Girls from rural areas especially are victims, either being kidnapped or sold as brides, or being tricked into working as prostitutes and “karaoke girls” in the large cities.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I suspect we’re going to have one epic Friday night news dump tonight given all the stuff likely to drop during the course of the day - the Bridgegate indictment against likely guilty plea by David Wildstein, which will likely result in further indictments against former Christie staffers and people at the Port Authority.

Then there’s the whole mess in Baltimore, in which the leaks are sprouting faster than the Titanic sank. The problem with all the leaks is that it can’t cover up one inescapable fact - Freddie Gray was killed in custody by Baltimore Police. He could not have done the injuries sustained to himself - which means that any/all of the officers involved in his transport should be indicted for homicide.

At the same time, the BPD investigation finds that there were additional stops that were unreported at the time? Only by chance too - video from a private surveillance video. In other words, the story concocted by the officers transporting him would have been considered official and final but for outside entities videotaping and finding discrepancy after discrepancy.

It’s little wonder then that law enforcement is all too often opposed to people video/photographing them while they’re doing their jobs - because it all too frequently reveals malfeasance on their part. It’s also why body cameras/video should be mandatory nationally for all law enforcement, at all times they are interacting with the public/suspects.

All too often, we see law enforcement abuse their power and discretion - and with fatal consequences. This hits hardest in minority communities, which is why the anger is so palpable there, but everyone should be outraged because these issues can affect anyone of any color/age.

Yep. All the “leaks” about “when” he got the critical injury serve only to muddy the waters and are irrelevant - whether it was during the arrest, etc., it was still a result of the police actions. The only “exculpatory” leak about him injuring himself is utterly unbelievable.

I wonder what’s in the unreleased report.

As I’ve said before, I’m a lily-white (well, more like boiled shrimp) guy raised in an all-white suburb, and I’ve never thought of cops as anything but the bullies I grew up with, selected for maximum sociopathy, given guns, and sicced on the public with no restraints on their behavior. If I’d been exposed to anything like what black people are in places like Baltimore, I would have embraced violent revolution as the only solution a long time ago.

It’s hard to think of police (no matter what they’re called) as anything other than fascist gatekeepers when you’re viewing images of Baltimore, Ferguson, and other areas around the US and around the world.

There used to be a saying back in my old demonstration days: “It you’re white, you’re all right; if you’re Brown, stick around; if you’re Black, get back.” The first and last are still very true, the second is still in flux since at the time Latinos were “useful” for working in the fields, as housekeepers, and for whatever other purposes as long as they, too, knew their place and accepted their conditions and hid in the shadows. Just don’t come over the border until we can use you for our own purposes is the message today and when we no longer need you, get out.

When people are used, abused and neglected and told they’re not wanted, that they’re the superfluous dregs of society, we’re going to see more and more of what we’re seeing today. This is not a sudden phenomenon—it’s been going on forever, it seems. You’d think there would be a natural affinity among people that suffer this phenomenon, but unfortunately that’s not always the case, except among people who educate themselves about it and reject racism. And too many aren’t willing to do the work which this undertanding requires, but I have hope for those who do. They’re the ones who will make the future better for everyone.

Things are going backwards even there. When I was growing up, if your ancestry wasn’t from Subsaharan Africa, and you weren’t “Oriental” (Yeah, I know you’re not supposed to use that term any more), you were white. We had some Mexican and Levantine kids that wouldn’t be considered white today, but nobody gave it a thought then. I suppose South Asians would have mucked up that system but I don’t remember any.

I also know people at the bottom of the labor ladder, working PT, and never knowing from week to week what their schedule will be and how many hours they will be able to work; these are people with family obligations as well. Employers don’t like it when you even ask off for a dr’s appt because it screws with the company’s schedules. These folks work weekends, are sometimes sent home, don’t get those holidays off (except perhaps xmas), no benefits. And the “underground” economy, where workers are paid cash is huge, far larger than most people can imagine, with workers being paid under the table. As long as a worker is classified as “casual labor”, it’s legal, too.

This is the situation for many workers in the US who can’t find permanent, FT employment that offers those benefits mentioned.

And consorting with racists (who gleefully retweet/favorite his racist rants).

Drugs or not. He’s got serious issues, and Twitter isn’t the appropriate place for him. As Charles said, his “ambition” to be a journalist is all but shot with his revelations on Twitter (as if any employer other than say racist outfits like Takimag or VDare would go near him if they do even the slightest bit of due diligence - like say looking him up on Twitter).

That stream of tweets would and should be radioactive. But he thinks that this is all just normal, and he’s speaking truth to power. Or something.

There was a recent article about new-technology solar panels and batteries that has the cost of both home-generated solar energy and coal-fired electricity generation coming to a nearly equivalent cost per MWH sometime before the end of the decade. The major difference now is with power from the electric grid is paid on a monthly basis, while solar panels and batteries have a significant up-front cost, and typically batteries require replacement roughly every 3-5 years, and solar panels about every 10 years on average.

People living next door to my late aunt intalled solar panels for their water heater, and that was in the ’70s. The next owner took them down, about the same time Reagan took those down at the WH.

I would have loved to have solar panels for everything on houses I owned, but as mentioned, the upfront cost was always prohibitive.

Well, Mosby did say the cops were “innocent until proven guilty”; she is not going to misstep in this case to try to gain convictions. She repeated what her office is doing, with the charges and warrants, several times. She’s a sharp one and isn’t going to do anything to jeopardize those cases.

A union or organization not willing to police its own (who by identification are essentially the public face of that organization) is essentially asking for trouble. If they put loyalty before legality, ethical behavior, etc. then the trustworthiness, character, and further behavior of any member of that organization is cast in doubt.

And for a public service organization that should be a major red flag.

You are 100% correct, but I think it brings to mind the fact that there are different standards for justice in this country based on race. If Freddie Gray had been white, how would we as a community feel?

I would hope that we would all feel the same way. That cops need to be reigned in and held accountable for their actions regardless of the race of the suspect.

Longer historical split. But you can also see that causing issues in the 20th century in relation to the civil rights movement and “white flight”. No chance for the city to expand and get a greater tax base. Possibly one reason the City of Baltimore has had long-standing economic issues as compared to some of the city-county* combos that even into the 1900s absorbed outlying areas that had previously been independent.

Right now, we’re using a bank of gel cells for our solar panels, and we have the wind generator ready to put online. The gel cells were previously used and are getting close to their up-and-die stage.

We’re going solar when we put the second level on our house. I’ll be ordering a Tesla battery at that time as well.

Bill Baroni, the former deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Bridget Anne Kelly, a former deputy chief of staff to Mr. Christie, were expected to be indicted.

The news comes as David Wildstein, another former Port Authority official and ally of Mr. Christie, pleaded guilty for his role in the lane closings.

The disclosure of the indictments was to come at a “proceeding of interest in a criminal matter” at 11 a.m. in front of Judge Susan D. Wigenton in United States District Court in Newark. The United States attorney for New Jersey, Paul J. Fishman, was expected to hold a news conference at 1 p.m. to discuss the investigation, breaking his long silence over the inquiry.

Right now, if Wildstein does not roll on Christie, my money is on Kelly doing so. Not only was she part of his inner circle, but she was also the one he rather unceremoniously threw under the bus and then backed over a few times for good measure. But even if she doesn’t, Christie’s immediate career in politics is pretty much over. He might someday resurrect it, but any talk of his winning reelection to the governor’s mansion, let alone the White House, is DOA.

464 Dr Lizardo  May 1, 2015 8:58:50am

Some photos from the “Day of Open Doors” at Lower Vitkovice; this was an old steel mill that’s now been converted into a cultural area for the people of the region - it includes art galleries, places to make your own art, a film studio with cinema, conference centers and in the last photo, an observation platform from the top of the old blast furnace. I love what they did with it…..far better than letting it to fall apart and rust away. This is money well-spent by the city (in cooperation with the EU).

I don’t know…the right loves stories of revenge and vengeance.

507 freetoken  May 1, 2015 9:16:39am

Thinking CCJ might want to get in on this action… but on second thought it looks like he has competition:

Jack Sen, UKIP’s parliamentary candidate for West Lancashire, has claimed that other governments have ignored “the ethnic cleansing” of people of European descent in South Africa.

The candidate also alluded to the actions of a number of Jewish campaigners, saying there is “a common thread that binds so-called atheist Marxists”.

[…]
The Afrikaner website said Sen, who describes himself on Twitter as “unapologetically politically incorrect”, is a “bloody genius”.

Conflict of interest my ass. McCulloch actually had a father killed in the line of duty and no one was begging for him to recuse himself. Ryan’s just upset that Mosby isn’t a hack like McCulloch.

Well yeah, but that’s the difference, Mosby is new on the job and she doesn’t have the sort of incestuous relationship with the BPD that police unions approve of, where she lets cops get away with murder in exchange for them providing her office with a steady stream of cases to try.

I’m curious just how far the FOP is willing to take this to assert their authority. Will they follow in the NYC chapter’s footsteps of calling for a slowdown in arrests? Have cops stage a massive sick-out? There’s just no way they’re going to let this end with some seething and a demand that she hand this over to an SIP that they can influence into dropping all the charges.

If they had done something just as illegal, but that affected only their political enemies, it wouldn’t resonate the same.

II imagine if the cops go on strike or have a “sick-out” that the crime rate would probably actually fall.

Don’t forget, also, that the DoJ is conducting a parallel investigation into Freddie Grays’ death.

Ayep, and considering the conclusions of the state’s attorney, I imagine potential federal charges will be coming as well.

520 Justanotherhuman  May 1, 2015 9:31:41am

I’d bet a nickel to a donut that the DoJ comes up with a similar plan for the BPD as they did Ferguson.

And there could also be civil rights violations as well since Freddie Gray was illegally arrested, for one thing.

Apparently I missed Megyn Kelly taking the time last night to badger the Gray family’s lawyer about whether they’d accept the exoneration of the cops or not, if they’d accept that the system had worked and the decision was the right one or not.

Somehow I get the feeling tonight’s show will be muttering about “indicting a ham sandwich” and a lot of excuse-making about how charges don’t really matter, convictions do and so the cops could still walk free.

Who’s that, the FOP? No doubt, that’s the only real defense left. Between the video and the timeline of events, there’s just no way to account for his broken neck except trying to argue that it was his own fault. Thing is, that’s not really a defense, it’s an argument for conviction on lesser charges, by saying that yeah they didn’t kill him, but he died in their custody and thus they were negligent. A way of saying “Oops, he killed himself, my bad!”
