I seem to be too stupid to understand RCP’s general election polling. Their poll data ends 5/19, yet they project the poll out to 5/21. On 5/19 Clinton leads by 3.1 points, on 5/21 trump leads by 0.2 points. I see no data to account for that in their database. Could somebody with a higher IQ explain to me? I really can’t understand the extrapolation to 5/21.

Righteous! Warren is a damn strong speaker, and would make for a formidable presidential candidate someday.
I also noticed her expansion on the Obama “you didn’t build that” theme. With full context it’s an expression of dedication to the foundations of civilization itself. Bravo!

Nothing to see here folks! Move along!

The Federal Election Commission won’t pursue a case against Ohio coal company Murray Energy despite agency attorneys finding “compelling” evidence that employees were coerced to contribute to Republican political candidates, including 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Commissioners deadlocked 3-3 over whether to pursue an investigation against the Pepper Pike mining company and its owner Robert E. Murray.

Murray could have faced financial penalties.

“Available documentation clearly demonstrate that there is reason to believe that the respondents committed serious violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act,” the three commissioners who wanted to investigate wrote in a joint statement.

Company leaders threatened employees with financial reprisals including the loss of their jobs if they failed to contribute, noted the three: Vice Chairman Steven T. Walther, Ann M. Ravel and Ellen L. Weintraub, all Democrats.

RCP is incredibly deceptive about their polling average. I’ve caught them several times selectively not including polls that would blow their average, dropping polls that should otherwise be inside the current range and/or including highly biased Fox, Rasmussen and Gravis polls long after they would drop any other poll. The only consistent thing about their methodology is that they like to sell the horserace and give Republicans a boost whenever possible.

Also even if they weren’t flagrantly gaming their results, RCP uses middle school level mathematics at best, calculating simple averages. Contrast this to places like 538 , Sam Wang’s Princeton Election Consortium who use real high level statistical analysis models and I don’t understand why anybody goes to RCP at all anymore.

Elections scholar Christopher Wlezien very kindly sent me the data that he and Robert Erikson used to construct the graphs in The Timeline Of Presidential Elections: 1952-2008. Adding in 2012 data, I took time series from 16 Presidential campaigns and calculated the standard deviation of the total movement as a function of time. This is a measure of uncertainty about November based on polls for a given day. This graph shows the ±1 standard deviation interval in red:

Now look at later dates: the gray curves converge. Consequently, the standard deviation declines, and reaches a local minimum at 270 days before the election, in mid-February- close to the start of primary season. So before the primaries start, February is a time when national polls tell us a fair amount about the final outcome.

But wait! After that, the standard deviation creeps upward. The election is 169 days from now, and in about a week the standard deviation hits its maximum value for 2016. Truly, now is the single worst time to be paying attention to fresh polling data. I don’t know why this is. It could be because typically, one or both parties are still going through an active nomination contest - as Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are doing now.

Amusingly, national polls won’t reach their February levels of accuracy until August. The Clinton-Trump margin in February was Clinton +5.0%. So how about if we just use that until after the conventions. Can you wait?

House Speaker Paul Ryan is reportedly poised to endorse Donald Trump for president, CBS News and ABC News report.

An endorsement by Ryan is likely to be seen as a sign the GOP is uniting after its divisive primary.

It is not clear when the endorsement will take place, according to ABC News.

He won the caucus by 45.6 points and is losing the primary by 7.2. That’s a 52.8-point difference.

That same difference would have resulted in Clinton winning the hypothetical primaries in Maine, Minnesota, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Hawaii, along with blowout victories in Iowa and Nevada. Sanders would hang on by single-digit margins in Utah, Idaho, and Alaska.

Police found Bubba with his owner in a Tustin motel room in March. Test showed the terrier mix was high on heroin and methamphetamine.

Officers arrested Joshua West for drug possession and animal cruelty.

Hopefully the previous owner is getting the help he needs, but I doubt it.

It’s cherry-picked by inclusion and exclusion. Changes occur because of polls they drop from the short-term aggregate. RCP should get skewed.

(Note the mix of RV and LV polls.)

Indeed, they are deceptive and want a horse race, but they also aggregate a bunch of polling so it becomes a one-stop shop. Better than no information at all.

Still, for those worried about how November will shake out, consider this from Sam Wang: Trump is making the Deep South and Utah competitive. He’s got Hillary with a solid 262 delegates off the bat, with battleground states in the most unlikely of places.

In other words, Hillary’s got this.

This op ed in the NYT is pretty accurate. There’s no way that I’m going to ask my Hillary-hating sister if she’s going to vote for Trump. She said he was a horrible choice when Cruz and Rubio were still in the race. I don’t want to know if she can bend her uber-christian outlook to justify supporting him now.

There are various measures of the chilling singularity of Trump’s candidacy, including the last two Republican presidents’ announcement that they won’t be attending their party’s convention, all the prominent G.O.P. donors who have publicly rejected Trump and the stubborn drumbeat among some Republicans for a third-party challenger, if only as a means to assure Hillary Clinton’s victory. These are extraordinary developments. We mustn’t forget that.

But another gauge of this freaky interlude is the number of us who are steadfastly avoiding conversations we’d normally have. We pride ourselves on not letting political arguments disrupt personal relationships. We have friends across the ideological spectrum. We esteem leaders from both parties. We value a healthy give-and-take.

But we can’t fit Trump into that. He’s a disagreement too far, an enthusiasm too bizarre. So we’re treading lightly and maneuvering around him. We’re Trumping on eggshells.

On the other hand, if she is absolutely opposed to Trump and thinks Mrs. Clinton is just a bit too much, make sure you continue to inform her about Trump’s nuttery. If she doesn’t vote for him, that amounts to half a vote for Mrs. Clinton.

He was arguing a year ago that Martinez would be a front-runner, if not the GOP nominee, because the party would want a governor with “executive experience” and she would bring that and more to the ticket. Now he’s a Trump booster, arguing that Trump is such a great nominee because he “tells it like it is” and is the manifestation of “anti-establishment” sentiment amongst voters.

So now I have the opportunity to twist the knife a bit. Happy day.

So, I understand things heated up a bit last night in Albuquerque NM. I guess that flies in the face of the GOPers who were thinking everything would settle down once Trump was the nominee. That linked WaPo story, while interesting in itself, is trumped (!?) by the story WaPo tacks on at the end:

— Ken Starr — of Whitewater and Starr Report fame — has reportedly been fired as Baylor’s president and chancellor amid a widespread sexual assault scandal involving the Baptist school’s football team. The university released a statement last night saying the board of regents will not respond to rumors while it reviews a report from outside counsel. “We expect an announcement by June 3,” it added. More from Cindy Boren: “On Starr’s watch, the school is accused of failing to respond to rapes or sexual assaults reported by at least six women students from 2009-2016. Although the problem of sexual assault at the university goes beyond the football team, at least eight former Baylor football players have been accused of violence against women over the last eight years […]

I always like that “telling it like it is” bit when it comes to Trump. Do people really think about how many times Trump changes what he is “telling?” So, I guess “it” is a variable and everything is subject to change in the telling.

The people that say that must be fine with it, because you hear it all the time. Maybe it is just a cliche that really doesn’t mean anything at all.

Nope, because this report will get the whole “THE INDICTMENT IS COMING!!!” talk back into high gear. After all, if the State Dept says electronic communications were poorly managed, then obviously the FBI will conclude that such was a criminal act!

When she initially accused me of hating all straight women, I thought she might be bummed about me insulting Hillary with my dumb joke. I wrote her back saying that I actually liked Hillary a lot and wanted her to be president. She wrote back telling me that Hillary was a criminal who should be in jail (only with many more words). She didn’t leave any point of entry for further discussion.

The 86-page report reviews email practices by five secretaries of state and generally concludes that record keeping has been spotty for years.

It was particularly critical of former secretary of state Colin Powell — who has acknowledged publicly that he used his personal laptop to write emails — concluding that he too failed to follow department policy designed to comply with public-record laws.

I wonder if the narrative is starting to change. Yesterday it was Jake Tapper calling bullshit on the Vince Foster thing. Today Chuck Todd points out that Trump used to defend the Clintons from every single attack he’s now making.

Todd goes on to suggest Clinton can attack Trump as ‘just another politician’ who’ll say anything to get elected. I’d suggest she add, “And he’s not even very good at it”, given how completely inconsistent he is.

The Trump position is let the states decide. That would mean those states that have no minimum wage would be a race to the bottom - screwing their already screwed citizens out of a living wage. Not coincidentally, but those states without a minimum wage are in the South: LA, MS, AL, SC, and TN.

If the federal minimum wage is eliminated, the minimum wage in those states is zero.

That’s what Trump is for.

THEY will, in their fantasy, because there, there’s no change in their income, but everything costs less.

I had a discussion with a usually-reasonable friend, who said he thought a bit of deflation would be just fine. Then I asked him why he thought HIS salary would stay the same? He didn’t have an answer.

Then I pointed out that he’s already signed a mortgage which will have him paying a fixed number of dollars every month for 30 years, and how would he like it if he had to work longer for each of those dollars?

Everyone thinks it’ll happen to everyone else. Unless they actually think.

Also:

What is the youth minimum wage?
The youth minimum wage is authorized by Section 6(g) of the FLSA, as amended by the 1996 FLSA Amendments. The law allows employers to pay employees under 20 years of age a lower wage for a limited period — 90 calendar days, not work days — after they are first employed. Any wage rate above $4.25 an hour may be paid to eligible workers during this 90-day period.

The transaction described here appears to be a sham transaction. They characterized it one way, which would be subject to tax, only to recharacterize it as a loan, which would not be taxable.

More whining from free-loading RWNJs here in Virginia:

The Heritage Preservation Association argued its appeal against the city of Danville in the Virginia Supreme Court on Tuesday, hoping to persuade a panel of justices to agree to hear the case involving the Third National Flag of the Confederacy.

Kevin E. Martingayle, on behalf of the Heritage Preservation Association, told the panel’s three justices during a time-allotted 10-minute argument that the latest version of the state’s statute protects current monuments and memorials, including the flag that flew on the grounds of the Sutherlin Mansion.

Last August, the Danville City Council approved an ordinance that allows only the national, state, city and MIA/POW flags to be flown on city property, with Councilmen Fred Shanks and Buddy Rawley voting against the measure.

Really nothing’s stopping them from flying a CSA flag on their own property. There’s nothing gained by a state building flying the CSA flag.

Do these idiots not realize that Kentucky stayed in the union? Honestly, I want to know what exactly it is about the CSA flag that’s so worth celebrating to them. Is it the poor farm boys that fought to preserve the way of life for a bunch of greedy and yes lazy planters, the generations of institutionalized racism in the former CSA states, the KKK? Really if they want to hang that flag on their own property, I can’t/won’t stop them but local governments should be perfectly free to tell the CSA flag it has no place on government property.

Also in Kentucky:

The Union Monument in Vanceburg in Lewis County, Kentucky, in Vanceburg, Kentucky, commemorates the Union soldiers of the American Civil War. It is the only monument anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line that so honors Union soldiers that is not in a cemetery done by public subscription.
The monument was built in 1884 by the citizens of Lewis County, which was a Union stronghold during the war and one of the few places in Kentucky that was still more sympathetic to the Union cause by the 1880s. It stands thirty-four feet tall, and both the pedestal and base are made of limestone. The base is five feet high and seven feet wide. The pedestal was made from eight separate pieces. The statue depicts a Union soldier in winter gear and kepi hat.

The inscription reads:

The war for the Union was right, everlastingly right, and the war against the Union was wrong, forever wrong

In total, 107 men from Lewis County died as Union soldiers during the war; their names are inscribed on the monument.

re: #160 No Depression

If he signed off on it, then yes. As a CEO or top executive of the involved companies, he could be held liable for the tax fraud.

UPDATE:

The article, however, claims the following:

Experts consulted by the Telegraph said that if the IRS were to carry out audits that concluded that the deal was equity and a disguised sale, Mr Trump would not be held directly responsible.

He was not a recipient of the payments from FL, and any tax liability on the $50 million would rest with Bayrock Group’s formal partners – although the tax professionals said that saying they acted on legal advice would likely to shield them from any potential criminal charges.

Mr Trump, however, could be deposed if the IRS decided to take action, according to a former tax prosecutor.

This once again highlights how easy it is to steal millions (by tax evasion) in white collar crimes, while petty thefts can get prison time with the slimmest of evidence. Corporate officials can sign off on tax evasion, and escape liability, but someone allegedly steals a pack of cigarettes, and they could end up dead by a trigger happy cop.

I’m a Virginian- second generation but I’ve always been proud that my second grandfather, a German immigrant to Pennsylvania who wasn’t even a citizen when he fought for the Army of the Potomac fought for the Union. The history of the CSA - white washed by current Southerners who want to ignore that the key reason for launching the war of Southern insurrection was their keen desire to preserve the institution of slavery (see the various state acts of secession). States rights my ass.

It was a desire to maintain their right to keep blacks as slaves.

And the current desire to keep those statues and other landmarks and to fly the flag on public property? What history are you trying to remember there - not the fact that the South lost. Not that the South sought to protect the institution of slavery.

Then what? What’s so important about the CSA flags that you must feel the need to fly them, or to honor generals who fought to uphold the institution of slavery while engaging in insurrection against the Union?

Rioting Only Makes Trump Stronger

What happened in Albuquerque Tuesday night not only was pointless, it was utterly stupid. It gave the campaign of He, Trump enough footage to create campaign ads all the way through his re-election campaign in 2020. It gave cable news a chance to monger some fear; by midnight, the CNN reporter on the scene was practically begging the cops to unleash hell on the people “who won’t go home.” It turned He, Trump into a victim. And, not least, throwing rocks at police horses is a dumb thing to do on its own merits.

This is how we lose the election to Trump.

Know that on the right hand from the Indies exists an island called California very close to a side of the Earthly Paradise; and it was populated by black women, without any man existing there, because they lived in the way of the Amazons.

I know it’s counterfactual, but splitting the Democrats I’m sure did some damage in states they could have been more competitive in. I saw this:

Welcome: Minnesota and Oregon become states during this election cycle
•Original 13 States control fewer than 50% of total Electoral Votes for first time
•Lincoln received only about 40% of the popular vote in a divided nation on the brink of Civil War
•New Jersey Electors split their vote: 4 for Lincoln, 3 for Douglas; Douglas had won popular vote

Leaving aside for the moment how hilarious rape jokes always are, the basic argument is that in exchange for receiving a benefit, a woman loses her bodily autonomy. Getting to write off mortgage interest is also a benefit, one usually worth a lot more dollars. Will these assclowns concede that if they write off mortgage interest, they can get raped?

HA! As if. Tax deductions and credits are your natural due, if you’re a middleclass white guy. Anyone else? It’s Free Stuff.
