New Poll: Majority of Americans Believe Trump’s Behavior Encourages White Supremacists

I wish it was a much larger percentage, but it’s clear that Donald Trump’s weak, insincere attempts to disguise his encouragement of white supremacists are not working with a majority of Americans.

A Public Religion Research Institute poll published Monday found that 54 percent of Americans think Trump’s decisions and behavior as president have encouraged members of white supremacist groups.

Trump has faced criticism for not consistently condemning white supremacism, including when he initially said that “both sides” were to blame for violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., last August.

The poll released Monday also found that 58 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s performance as president, including 42 percent of people who strongly disapprove. The poll found that 41 percent of Americans approve of his performance.

Additionally, nearly seven in 10 Americans think Trump has hurt the dignity of the presidency or wish that he would behave more similarly to his predecessors.

Left hanging on the end of the last thread because it was long and I am slow.

We’re constantly told we should talk to Republicans to understand their needs or wants. I agree as far as anyone seeking office should be a representative of all or his constituents.

So I gave that a try in the post office this morning when I was mailing a water sample to the state lab. There were two other people there, the postmistress and the gun shop owner.

After doing my business mailing the package to the state water lab, I opened with concern about this morning’s package bomb sent to CNN and the list captured of a number of prominent Democratic politicians and media personalities. Here’s how that went.

After simply mentioning the news, and expressing concern for both the intended target and the people in the Post Office who had to handle these packages, I got some whataboutism, both from the postmistress and the gun shop owner.

In my mentioning the package bomb this morning, I only mentioned the list and my concern. I did not make it a political statement.

The postmistress immediately interpreted that as “Doesn’t Trump have the right of free speech?”

I said, sure as far as that goes. But Mr. Trump has a special duty as President of all Americans to be careful in the words he chooses. He represents all of us, both those who voted for him and those who didn’t.

The gun shop owner first questioned if these were real or fake bombs, so I explained that ATF and the FBI had already determined they were real; the bomber seemed to have failed only in using poor-quality batteries.

“Well if they were fake what’s the problem?”

I pointed out it doesn’t matter if a bomb is real or fake (but appears real). It is illegal to mail either one, to which the postmistress chimed in “Yup.”

I then pointed out that any high-profile attack, regardless of who did it or why, tends to spawn local copycats.

I don’t think anyone here would go so far as to send me a mail bomb, but everyone in the county knows I am a Democratic village trustee. If some chowderhead in the local area decides to try the same stunt locally, he’d risk our postmistress and anyone else in the mail stream, our local rural mail delivery clerk, and maybe my elderly neighbour (who’s mailbox is affixed to the same post as mine). Some local guy trying to get famous through terror could injure or kill a whole bunch of people. The same if they sent it to a local radio station or newspaper.

That caused a change in attitude, when I put it in terms of “it could be you.”

I’m sure I didn’t make two brand-new Democratic voters, but I got them to think about this violence a different way (I hope).

“It’s a terrible, terrible thing what’s going on with hate in our country, frankly, and all over the world. And something has to be done.”

If only the person who said that had any self-knowledge or credibility. If he had the first, he’d start by apologizing for all he has done to fuel hatred in the past three years, and he’d cancel his remaining political rallies or tone them way, way down. If he had the second, we’d believe him. But he doesn’t. There’s no way to trust what President Donald Trump says, especially on civility and reconciliation.

There are large differences between racial and ethnic groups on this issue. About seven in ten black (72%) and Hispanic (68%) Americans, compared to less than half (45%) of white Americans, believe that the president’s conduct has encouraged white supremacist groups. Among white Americans, those with a four-year college degree are more likely than those without a degree to say that Trump’s decisions and behavior as president have encouraged white supremacist groups (58% vs. 38%).

So, once again, uneducated white people are the problem. Everyone else sees it, INCLUDING the white supremacists, who count Trump as an ally, if not a full-fledged member.

If I were a relative of any of those killed in this right wing domestic terror attack, I’d absolutely denounce Trump and refuse to meet with him.

And for the record, if I’m killed in gun violence or a mass shooting or right wing domestic terror incident, I sure as fuck want my family and friends to make it political - and go after those who prevented gun control and refused to take steps to make it safer for all of us.

Trump gutted the CVE group, reducing its funding - mostly because the LEO group was correctly identifying that right wing extremists were the threat we had to be on the watch for.

Turns out, the FBI and LEOs were right - right wing nutters are on the rise and are pushing more terror attacks and condoning and inciting others to violence, and it starts with Trump. He’s the one equating goddamned fucking Nazis with the people who protest them. Trump’s the one who blames the victims because they didn’t have guns to defend themselves from a guy with an AR-15 who murdered 11 people and shot 3 cops too. I shouldn’t have to carry a gun to shul (or church or school, or a movie theater, or anywhere else). It’s the politics of fear to think that this is normal.

The US is only country on planet where this kind of violence occurs regularly that isn’t a war zone. It’s like clockwork.

And Trump and the GOP refuse to stop it because they’re beholden to the compromised NRA.

Many people with less than a college education have always been able in larger numbers to be corralled by a demagogue. The problems are multi-faceted, but the blame goes on the demagogue, not the people who are convinced by his lies and hate.

Critical thinking skills are generally not taught in elementary or high school. They could be, but when you have a group like the Texas GOP putting in their party platform they oppose teaching critical thinking in primary or secondary school because it undermines parental authority, the party is stating its official position is to keep people from being able to discern what’s true from what’s unproven or what’s false.

That makes that group ripe for picking by a demagogue.

Case in point: Kellyanne Conway trying to retcon the attack on Tree of Life Synagogue (and the last one on the Emanuel AME Church) into an attack on “religion” or religious belief, which she asserts is rising in the USA.

That’s a dog whistle to every person who’s been taught by a preacher that “atheists and secularists” (never mind secularism has nothing to do with that) are a threat to God-believing people.

Couple that with the constant fear generated by conservatives against the other, and you’ve now deflected the cause of the attacks. It’s not because the Charleston shooter hated African-Americans and the Pittsburgh shooter hated Jews. It’s because there is an attack on religion.

Never mind that of all religious groups by percentage of the group atheists commit the fewest crimes, they are painted as “evil” and “trying to attack religion.” If you view that as an existential crisis, it becomes “get the atheists before they get us.”

On a different attack some months ago, a local fellow wrote a letter blaming mass shootings on atheists. I fired up my “oh hell no” pen and took his letter apart in a rebuttal.

I don’t know. Everyone in town already knows where I stand and what party I belong to. I also had my candidate questionnaire in the paper last week (available on the right hand bar of LGF).

Pretty sure that Jews are able to carry as necessary within an eruv, and for their safety/security.

The restrictions for carrying (working) on Shabbat depends on the nature of the action.

But at same time, Jewish congregations could hire armed security, or have local police present. Our congregation has the latter, and we’ve got a bunch of security measures in place.

It’s insane.

The divide has always been there, I think. Some educated whites have always been sympathetic to uneducated whites; some have cynically used them for power.

Given how much things have changed in the last 20 years (in technology, in demographics, and in the culture wars), I’m not sure the divide wouldn’t have grown even without Trump. During the pre-Civil War era and then during Jim Crow, poor/uneducated white people could look at minorities and say “well, at least I’m better off than them.” It was changing slowly, but in the last 20 years or so, the change sped up. Trump has focused the rage and resentment, he’s distilled it in populism, but I do believe if it wasn’t him, it’d be someone else carrying the Pat Buchannan Honorary Tiki Torch of White Nationalism.

And to think, in 2000 Trump left the Reform party because of Bechannan and Duke…

I don’t think it is much different. The difference is the Big Mouth in the oval office giving them a voice and cover…so out they come.

The resentment, bigotry and all their other gripes are historically the same. They just had to shut up because they would get shouted down and put in their place. And they wouldn’t get the media coverage because they were contained and quieted.

Actually not true. The War on Christmas was invented by the John Birch Society after Henry Ford printed The International Jew. The JBS took that book and distributed it to members and politicians, noting there was a War on Christmas.

All FOX did was resurrect original JBS propaganda. It was Goldwater who invited the JBS in to the GOP, which gave them access to the head of a major political party.

When FOX came on the air, they just took the JBS propaganda and spread it.

I think without Trump, they’d be far more restrained, and the divisions would not be as deep. Trump appealed to every single part of their pathology - not just racism, sexism, anti-intellectualism and xenophobia, but boiling resentment at being called out on their racism, sexism, anti-intellectualism and xenophobia. He told them that all the racist, sexist, anti-intellectual and xenophobic things they thought were not only not BAD, but that they weren’t racist, sexist, anti-intellectual and xenophobic.

They love him because he encourages and justifies every single bad impulse they have, and he didn’t speak in coded language. No other Republican leader would have done that, so no other Republican leader would have empowered them like that.

Carrying a weapon on Sabbath is permitted for pikuach nefesh (protection of life). This is why IDF active soldiers and reservists carry weapons everywhere they go, including on Sabbath. BTW Israel has some very strict gun laws, unlike the RW meme that everybody there is armed to the teeth.

Israel has some of the toughest gun control rules in the world.

They require lots of training just to get to carry, and then need specific reasons to carry.

Israelis must meet a detailed list of criteria (Hebrew link) to be allowed to own a firearm. They must ask the state for a license, are permitted only one gun at a time, and must even ask for permission to sell their gun. And the Firearms Licensing Department is no rubber stamp: Roughly 40 percent of requests are rejected.

Indeed, before even requesting a license, Israelis must meet minimum age requirements, be in good health and of sound mind, and have no criminal record, among other preconditions.

There’s more. Once they are granted the right to carry a gun, Israelis are limited to just 50 bullets in their possession at any given time. They must shoot or return old bullets before they can buy new ones, a process that can only take place at tightly regulated shooting ranges where each bullet’s sale is carefully registered. The types of guns permitted also depend on the reason for the license - i.e., a veterinarian may only purchase a gun approved by the government for the killing of animals, a hunter’s license only permits the purchase of a firearm from an approved firearms list kept by the Parks Authority, and so forth.

In other words, as the Public Security Ministry explains on its website, Israeli law “does not recognize a right to bear arms, and anyone wanting to do so must meet a number of requirements, including a justified need to carry a firearm.” There is no inkling of a belief among Israelis that citizens should be permitted to own guns as a check on government power — that is, as a limit to the sovereignty of the state expressed in its monopoly on violence.

Franco was probably with them too but Juan Carlos is a decent man and destroyed them. Peron, Pinochet, Thatcher tried and came close but there were enough other traditions surviving to prevent a total replacement by the New Order.

So, it has been a rough few days for our family. My son moved with his wife and 2 1/2 year old son to Squirrel Hill 3 months ago. They live a couple of blocks from the temple where the slaughter transpired. That is not their temple, but talk about being a little too close to home.

Their son attends a daycare run by another congregation nearby. My son and his wife were distraught dropping him off at his daycare that now has to have armed guards posted. I am thankful our grandson is too young to understand and feel fearful, but it breaks my heart that my son and his wife and Jewish households across the country are forced to confront the grim reality of the hatefulness that has gained traction in our country.

I have decided to join our town’s interfaith council that promotes understanding and toleration by organizing shared activities and projects. Whether working together raising funds or sponsoring events, the shared activities are a great way to develop trust, friendships and a sense of common purpose among people of different backgrounds. I hope some of you may consider joining such an initiative or starting something similar where you live. At times like this people often wonder, “what can we do?” So I figured I’d just suggest this as a possibility. This is the best way I can think of to thwart Trump’s hateful agenda. That, and of course, vote.

Similarly, the day after CNN’s offices were evacuated to secure and remove a pipe bomb, one of those sent to people on Trump’s hit list and featuring a far right Tea Party meme on its casing, the media dutifully played clips of Democrats arguing to not let the GOP monopolize the national discourse and be willing to confront elected leaders while the right wing huffed and puffed about “false flags” and insinuating that the media more or less deserved it, sticking to whataboutism even after Cesar Sayoc Jr. — or, as he’s known on social media, the MAGA Bomber — allegedly tried to kill journalists and prominent liberal politicians and financiers, clearly and obviously inspired by Trump’s rhetoric. And as a kicker, it took Trump all of a few hours after Sayoc’s arrest to double down on his conspiratorial bloviation and go on to spout doomsday fantasies about Democrats at his rally that night.

Instead of standing up for themselves and the majority of Americans, they cowered in fear of being accused of “having a liberal bias” even though this is the charge leveled at them for merely existing and having the temerity to do anything other than pipe straight-up Republican propaganda praising Emperor Trump I of House MAGA and his glorious and righteous work of “restoring America” in a style not too dissimilar from North Korea or China. And their fear of right wing rage is so great, they seldom push back on their nonsense-spewing GOP guests, who erupt in tirades and hysterical shrieking at the slightest provocation.

So, it has been a rough few days for our family. My son moved with his wife and 2 1/2 year old son to Squirrel Hill 3 months ago. They live a couple of blocks from the temple where the slaughter transpired. That is not their temple, but talk about being a little too close to home.

Their son attends a daycare run by another congregation nearby. My son and his wife were distraught dropping him off at his daycare that now has to have armed guards posted. I am thankful our grandson is too young to understand and feel fearful, but it breaks my heart that my son and his wife and Jewish households across the country are forced to confront the grim reality of the hatefulness that has gained traction in our country.

I have decided to join our town’s interfaith council that promotes understanding and toleration by organizing shared activities and projects. Whether working together raising funds or sponsoring events, the shared activities are a great way to develop trust, friendships and a sense of common purpose among people of different backgrounds. I hope some of you may consider joining such an initiative or starting something similar where you live. At times like this people often wonder, “what can we do?” So I figured I’d just suggest this as a possibility. This is the best way I can think of to thwart Trump’s hateful agenda. That, and of course, vote.

My heartfelt sympathy to your son, daughter-in-law and grandson.

I grew up about 3/4 of a mile from there. While I attended Rodef Shalom and not Tree of Life, I knew many who did attend Tree of Life.

I will say that part of Squirrel Hill is quite beautiful. And there is a lot to commend it. One brother went to high school with Frances Arnold, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year. My sister went to grade school with Fred Rogers’ son and Robbie Marshall.(Hollywood Director) I also found Pittsburgh a wonderful place in Spring summer and Fall. Winter not so much, though.

It did a little. It goosed GDP growth a smidgen, allowing for the best back-to-back quarters since…Obama. But all the analysts still see growth for the year in the 2-3 range. Gas prices won’t help growth, and rising interest rates and trade wars won’t either. Plus, you know, a lot of corporate America was sitting on enormous piles of cash they could have used anytime but didn’t. So absolutely zero surprise they haven’t used the influx from tax cuts, either.

I’ll go back to the top of the thread and read, but I had an interesting discussion with the former chairman (mayor) of my village board. He is a staunch Republican supporter.

As someone noted on a previous thread, my Post Office discussion would spread within seconds across town, and wondered how that would affect my reëlection.

The mayor emeritus came by my house just as my wife and I were leaving to the water lab. He stopped to tell me that he thought I would win the election here in a landslide, considering what I do on the village board and my work on the water system, along with my answers to the questionnaire in the paper on positions affecting the village.

He also noted my Nazi-curious neighbour had gone round town a couple weeks ago knocking on every door (he didn’t come to mine quelle surprise) seeking votes and mostly was told to take a hike.

He went on to complain about our state senator passing out BS about healthcare (he is running for reëlection, alas there was no Democrat on the ballot to oppose him), praised the service he gets at the VA and is wondering why the GOP is trying to tank that, and talked about the plunging stock market essentially wiping out his mother (she is very old as our former mayor is a Vietnam vet). As our state senator is also Vietnam vet, he said he’s not sure he can trust those of his generation (and particularly Vietnam vets) to act in the interest of constituents.

So that was a surprise, as he specifically came to me to tell me that. Perhaps that talk was worthwhile at the Post Office. I thanked him for coming by my house and chatting.

I lack that talent. And I am impressed whenever I see it done well. It sounds like your mayor is a devout, and successful, practitioner of it.

Iirc, Machiavelli in his “The Prince” discusses the need for this talent.

What is this sudden concern for TB (aside from the usual racist dogwhistle in this country for two hundred years that “immigrants bring disease” and OMYGODTERRORHORROR-HAIRONFIRE)?

I have latent TB. TB is not as common as it was one hundred years ago, but it was certainly not stamped out in this nation.

According to WHO, the incidence rate of TB for Guatemala has steadily dropped, and is now 2 per 100,000 people. Honduras has also dropped and is 4.5 per 100,000. El Salvador is 1.5 per 100,000. The United States is at 0.2 per 100,000.

So the incidence is higher in those nations vis the USA. Canada is also higher (0.3 per 100,000).

So if we had a so-called caravan with 100,000 people in it, you could expect to find four or five people with TB or latent TB (which is not contagious).

It’s almost as if physicians couldn’t find that if you set up proper processing, considering the long lead time.

And if they came here “legally” (meaning we’d rather they didn’t, but if they did, buy a plane ticket or something), anyone with TB could still bring it in.

Other nut jobs are bringing up the alleged incidence of other diseases to make the big scary conservative claim “they’re diseased.”

I’m not very good at that; I express myself better through writing. That said, I try to be sincere.

If someone comes to me with a question (especially outside a board meeting) and I can’t answer it, I will write it down and tell the person “I don’t know, but I’ll get back to you with an answer.” I then make sure I follow up on that and get them the answer. They might not like it, but they got it.

Like I said yesterday, if they’re gonna have these morons on for interviews, they need to either say or run a disclaimer somewhere in the show that they’re contractually bound by Trump not to disparage him in any way. That way, viewers know that when they’re polishing his ass, it’s because they could get sued if they didn’t.

A nuber of my FB friends post rescue dogs in their areas. One caught my eye, not so much because the dog is cute - they’re ALL cute! - but because the description suggested either an alternative method of reproduction in dogs, or a human with no clue how genetics work.

I’ve read and studied the Pirke Avot and other really basic Jewish sources as a way to illuminate and understand the origins of the Christianity I claim to profess. When I do so, I feel I respect that tradition. But this little freak disrespects everybody - Jew, Christian, Jesus and G*d - with his pretense.
