Copied over:

The city of Rockwall, in John Ratcliffe’s district, put this up on next door:

There have been numerous reports in the media about novel coronavirus, COVID-19, including news that Texas residents are currently being monitored in various parts of the state. While there has been one resident of Frisco identified and monitored as “presumptive positive” for COVID-19, health officials there say the immediate risk of transmission remains low. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends taking everyday preventive steps to limit exposure and reduce the risk of transmission:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
• If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
• Consult CDC’s travel website for any travel advisories and steps to protect yourself if you plan to travel outside of the US.

According to the CDC, reported COVID-19 illnesses have ranged from mild to severe symptoms, including fever, cough and/or shortness of breath, which may appear between 2-14 days after exposure. There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19, and the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed. For more information on COVID 19, please refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: cdc.gov.

Within the last few weeks, the Rockwall Police Department and the Rockwall Fire Department have enacted precautions for residents and first responders to help mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19. First responders have personal protective equipment (PPE) available, and have established response protocols for the use of that PPE when appropriate. In addition, the departments have implemented screening questions for callers to 9-1-1 to identify individuals who may be experiencing symptoms consistent with the virus. The police and fire personnel have attended briefings by Rockwall County Office of Emergency Management and the Texas Division of Emergency Management, and will receive the latest information available upon its release by these agencies.

Melania Trump cancels fundraiser, cites scheduling conflict (goes to KBSA)

Melania Trump was to do a fundraiser in Beverly Hills.

Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s spokeswoman, cited an unspecified “scheduling conflict” as the reason on Monday. The cancellation comes as organizations and groups around the country are scrapping large gatherings amid an outbreak of the new coronavirus.

President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign had been asking supporters to make a donation for a chance to meet the first lady in California.

“Win a trip to meet first lady Melania Trump in Beverly Hills,” campaign literature said. A date for the event was not included, though it was believed to have been set for mid-March.

Posted to Facebook: In these times when i’m feeling mortal, i remind myself that clint eastwood was my age in 1984, and since then he’s killed gene hackman, wiped out a bunch of rapists, failed to save jack kennedy, and acted as a drug mule for a cartel. Things are only going to get more interesting from here.

MV Grand Princess passengers are going to be quarantined at Joint Base San Antonio/Lackland.

California residents will be quarantined at Travis AFB and MCAS Miramar.

The Department of Defense is working with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support passengers returning to the United States on the Grand Princess cruise ship.

Upon docking, passengers will be medically screened by HHS/CDC at the port and then only asymptomatic passengers will be transferred to federal military installations for COVID-19 testing, and a 14-day quarantine.

HHS informs us that nearly 1,000 passengers who are California residents will likely complete the mandatory quarantine at Travis Air Force Base and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and residents of other states will likely complete their mandatory quarantine at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland or Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Georgia.

The final list of DoD locations and the numbers of passengers at each base are still being worked, and we will update this information as soon as the details are finalized.

For additional information on quarantine operations, please contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

I guess people just by tp when they are afraid?

COVID-19 is not reported to be diarrhea causing. It’s a respiratory disease. If you’re going to horde anything that hand tissues and cold medicines. Maybe people use tp instead of kleenex… I do. But how much do you need? And cheap store-brand alternatives to the brand Kleenex are not more expensive than tp.

Anyway, strong warm wind from the south and humid. It’s going to rain here soon, quite a bit. First decent rain this year. Unfortunately northern California is not going to get much out this storm, so drought concerns remain.

We haven’t been to the store since we were at the Commissary at FE Warren AFB a few days ago.

We don’t have any need to go into town for the next couple weeks unless something comes up, so I don’t know if the store in the county seat is suffering from tp deficiency.

Biden has been getting great polling leading up to not so super Tuesday tomorrow, so fivethirtyeight.com has upped his odds of winning the nomination to 99%. Sanders should concede and endorse Biden if he gets his butt kicked tomorrow, as expected. Sanders said the plurality winner should be the nominee, and Biden could virtually clinch the plurality tomorrow.

I scored a 12-pack of TP today, from shelves nearly empty of paper products. But I attribute that to the fact that that building is going to be demolished, so the store will close any day now.

We all know Bolsonaro and Trump are cut from the same cloth:

Bolsonaro says virus threat is “overstated”

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday minimized the threat of the new coronavirus — which has killed nearly 4,000 people in more than 60 countries and tanked global financial markets — saying its destructive power has been “overstated.”

The fall of world markets “basically has to do with the price of oil, which sank 30 percent, and with the coronavirus issue too,” said the ultra-right wing president to a crowd of about 200 Brazilian supporters in Miami, where he is visiting in an effort to drum up foreign investment.

“In my opinion, that virus’s destructive power is overstated. Maybe it is even potentially being exaggerated for political reasons,” Bolsonaro said.

Coronavirus forces UNK to cancel study abroad to Czech Republic (Goes to UNK news site)

KEARNEY - The University of Nebraska at Kearney has canceled an upcoming study abroad program as the coronavirus continues to spread across the world.

UNK notified students Wednesday that it is canceling its spring study abroad program at Palacky University in the Czech Republic. The decision impacts 11 students and one faculty member who were scheduled to participate beginning March 16.

The decision to cancel study abroad spring trips was made by UNK following a directive from University of Nebraska leadership.

“This decision is not made lightly, but student health and safety is our primary concern,” said Tim Burkink, assistant vice chancellor for international affairs.

In accordance with University of Nebraska system policy, travel to certain countries under advisories or warnings by the Centers for Disease Control or the U.S. Department of State has been restricted over the past month.

Not only is the $1 bill (Treasury note) obsolete, but so is the $5 and $10 bills. Who uses $10 bills regularly? I don’t.

The US Mint needs to come out with replacement coins for those denominations.

They can’t eliminate the $1 for the same reason they can’t eliminate the 1¢: Too much pressure from business and vending machine industries.

Additionally, the government won’t make $1 coins in the proper size (the size of silver dollars) so they get confusing (especially Susan B. which looks too much like a quarter).

The current $10 face value US coin is a quarter ounce gold. Obviously trading value is much higher than that.

There is no reason not to make five and ten dollar coins in base metals.

re: #144 Anymouse 🌹🎃

The Susan Anthony dollar was a mistake in regards to shape/size. Current $1 coin is better.

The Mint can make five and ten dollar coins slightly larger than the quarter, so blind people can tell the difference. You can make the five and ten the same size but put a whole in the middle of the five so again the blind can tell. Plus one can use a fancier bronze for the ten dollar coin to give it a prettier color.

Way back in my grandparents’ day they used coins. The dollars (silver) were large. They didn’t use paper money for most things. The old Treasury bills (when they said Treasury) were around but people still used coins.

The penny has no use today (see other countries who have done in the tiny denominations). And no one uses the 50 cent pieces any more. We could have 5 cent, 10 cent, 25 cent, $1, $5, and $10 coins.

I’m going to become a little old lady hermit for awhile. I wish I could get my husband and son to stay out of restaurants and stores though. I do not want this shit, it could also kill my husband with all his health issues. There’s gotta be other stuff to do when you’re bored besides go to places stuffed with humans. My son goes to tons of concerts and small music venues, I worry about the shit coming in the door with him. I really am hoping for cancellations, so far none.

In my case, two weeks without work means homelessness. The possibilities for me to simply teach my local students online isn’t here and if I don’t work, I literally don’t eat and won’t have a place to live.

It well and truly is hand-to-mouth for me and in my case, a quarantine means I end up in the street. Credit cards? LOL in Czech Republic, that’s for the rich (the income requirements for a credit card here are insane) so that won’t work for me. Food deliveries? There’s only one grocery delivery service in my city and they’ve announced they’ll take a hiatus in the event of a quarantine situation.

That’s my worry.

I went into the office after nearly a week away (elective paid time off, use it or lose it). I discovered how many surfaces I touch just leaving our enclosed, badge access only room to go to the bathroom.

In mid-morning, an email went out stating a Bay Area employee had tested positive for coronavirus. So that person’s entire close staff is now self-quarantined and the entire building (several hundred people) is being disinfected.

I prefer not to work at home, because I personally function better when I’m in the office. But I’ll be honest, I have to admit I’m using up a LOT of brain CPU cycles trying to decide the politics of staying home versus setting an example as a manager and going into the office. I have to go in tomorrow because we’re bringing on a new person, I’m one of her trainers and she was told she needed to work in the office this week with me. (I love being volunteered.)

Oh, and by the way, there’s nothing like waking up just before the alarm, checking the news and discovering that the chairperson of the board and another person were forced out by criticism from the House Financial Services committee.

We are making some very big mistakes.

By “we” I mostly mean Trump, his goons, and state elected officials.

Looking at this latest variant of Sars-Cov virus (at least four variants, albeit not known to be functionally different):

1) China gets credit for acting decisively, but this was only after the problem erupted in Wuhan, even though some locals had already alerted that too many people were falling ill.
2) Italy only locked down after it had been clear for several days that the community was spreading the virus around the county and outside the country via travelers.
3) The Trump administration ignored the problem for weeks, then delayed sounding the alarm about testing large numbers of people.

And here we are now on 10 Mar and governors still have not implemented mandatory shutdown of public gatherings, even though it is clear that there are community hot beds of the virus.

Sure, some colleges are closing voluntarily, and some local school districts are making similar efforts. But these are too few. All, as in literally all, public gatherings need to be curtailed. Shopping needs to be done with the utmost care. Travel in closed surrounds (planes, trains, buses) should only be allowed for those who pass strict tests.

But we won’t do that.

And so we are rushing the death of a great many elderly people, who might otherwise continue to live for years. And also we are rushing the end of life for those immune-compromised people, of which there are many in our society for a large number of reasons.

Until treatments are rolled out for the infected, and vaccines proven to work are provided to the whole society, we need to slow down the spread.

But it appears our society is too much into denial.

Locally:

Travel-Related COVID-19 Case Confirmed in San Diego County

A San Diego County resident who recently traveled overseas is the region’s first presumptive positive COVID-19 and is being treated at an area hospital, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Monday.

The patient, a woman in her 50s, developed symptoms while traveling overseas and was in the hospital before she tested presumptive positive for the virus, according to Eric McDonald, Medical Director with the County Epidemiology Immunization Branch.

The patient had contact with one person in her home and that person is under self quarantine, but there was no suspected contact with the general public, McDonald said.

[…]

How can a person not have contact with people other than the one person with whom they live? Unless the infected has truly holed up in their dwelling, I don’t think it’s possible to avoid contact with others.

Also, the story errs in saying this is the first case in the county. The article even lists others. There were two from the first cruise ship that were treated at UCSD.

As the article notes, the headline-case detailed data is not being given to the public, so we don’t know where she traveled.

Austria recommends citizens return home from Italy

Austria advised citizens to return home from Italy, its southern neighbour that plans a nationwide lockdown until next month in a new attempt to beat the coronavirus in Europe’s worst-affected country.

“Austrian travellers are urgently advised to return to Austria,” the foreign ministry said on its website on Tuesday.

How many of those Austrians are already infected, and returning home will simply make them vectors for more infections in Austria?

Currently Austria reports only 131 cases, no deaths.

Looks like the Coachella Music Festival might be postponed until October:

Organizers of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival are in talks to postpone the festival amid the growing coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., multiple sources tell Rolling Stone.

The annual festival was originally scheduled to take place over two back-to-back weekends — April 10th, 11th, and 12th, followed by April 17th, 18th, and 19th — at Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, about two hours outside of Los Angeles. A newly reunited Rage Against the Machine was set to headline alongside Travis Scott and Frank Ocean. Coachella and its sister festival Stagecoach together bring in some $1.4 billion in profits each year, and an estimated 250,000 people attend the former each year.

Several artist managers have been in talks with Goldenvoice for the last week discussing postponement of the festival, a source familiar with the situation told Rolling Stone Monday night, adding that the cancelation of SXSW and the recent outbreak of cases in California’s Riverside County “really changed everyone’s tune.” Another source said Coachella “confirmed” postponement with their agency on Monday night, but did not provide further details. A third source close to the situation said the talks are ongoing and not finalized yet.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Mar 10, 2020 • 12:19:56am

Upstream gdf posted a link to an article discussing our bias towards normalcy. In other words, even when faced with a crisis many people will pretend like nothing is happening.

It was only a couple of days ago that Dr. Fauci made his statement about older people avoiding large gatherings, etc. At that time it seemed rather bold of Dr. Fauci to contradict Trump.

But Fauci also said that he thought a lock-down, as in Italy, and China (and even South Korea), was not needed, and that it wouldn’t work here.

The more I reflect on it, Fauci is playing to this need for normalcy.

Even though it may be true that Americans will balk at a “lock down”, the extreme measures taken in China, and Korea, and even in Japan (closing down sports gatherings), is exactly what is needed.

East Asians are culturally adapted to living in crowded places. The old saying about a nail sticking up will get hammered down being a good example of how people in East Asia have internalized the idea that they need to conform for the good of the whole society.

Here, though, we’re still believing in “rugged individualism”, and the myth of American exceptionalism.

We will know by next Sunday, one week after Fauci made his latest statement, how well we are doing. And a week after that it will be clear if we are foolish for not having gone under “lockdown”. That is all it will take - 14 days - to get a clear picture on how bad it will be here in the US.

Meanwhile, here in Czech Republic, there’s a good possibility that community spread is underway in Prague. Additionally, several thousand Czechs came home from Italy on Saturday, so they could avoid the mandatory (if unenforceable) 14-day home quarantine. In a few more days (most likely), if they’re infected they’ll be showing symptoms - and in the meantime, if they are infected, they’re probably spreading it to their co-workers, family, friends, people around them on the subway/trams/buses/commuter trains, etc. Taking the tram home yesterday from work, I tell you what, it sounded like a goddamn tuberculosis ward. Half those people on the tram were coughing so hard, they could probably see their esophagus.

I’m pleased that California has made testing for the coronavirus free to all Californians who require one. The federal government should follow California’s lead and ensure that no American experiencing coronavirus symptoms skips testing because they can’t afford it.

This all makes it crystal clear that COVID-19 is just a Democrat hoax to force socilized medicine on us!!!

I just found my month’s pass tickets from the Moscow subway,
September 1993: price 600 Rubles
October 1993: price 1200 Rubles.

The price was still about the same in dollars, it’s just that the inflation rate had gone from 300 rubles to the dollar to 600.

It peaked at 700 that year, at which point they just lopped off two zeros, from which it has been working its way back up.

After the latest oil price collapse, it is back to up 70 rubles to the dollar…

That kinda dovetails with a tv show I saw a long time ago about how people react in their heads…some get an almost tunnel vision that slows time for them so they can deal with whatever it is; seconds seem to turn into minutes for them and it allows them to think through “options”, while others simply cannot process what is happening. They always seem to use the plane crash scenario (I think this was surrounding the plane that bottomed out in San Fran some years ago). This show was talking with survivors and how they were dealing with what happened in the moment and they all said that it was like time stood still for them.

To leave or enter his building, he has to show a card that proves that he lives there.

Coronavirus: 45% of people infected with virus show ‘no or minimal symptoms’, new figures indicate

Almost half of those who have tested positive for coronavirus in Italy show “no or minimal symptoms”, new figures have revealed.

Data released by the country’s National Institute of Health (ISS) on Monday shows 45 per cent of patients do not exhibit anything more than mild symptoms.

One in ten people with the illness display no symptoms at all.

The data also reveals that 22 per cent of infections have been detected in people aged between 19 and 50.

[…]

Those who want to minimize the seriousness of COVID-19 always want to point out that the case numbers undercount the actual infectious count.

Well yes, everybody expects that.

But if 45% of the infected show no or few symptoms, then even if that is true globally, then that means 55% do show symptoms severe enough to get noticed. That means the current serious condition + death fraction of the total infected is only about half that which is calculated from the case load… which means that COVID-19 is much more lethal than this year’s flu strains.

Apparently you can’t get tested without explicitly stating the name of who you were around that’s tested positive. They’re all pissed as hell. Cassandra Fairbanks. The whole thread is angry conservatives.

This is what you get when you have a reactionary know nothing in charge of the WH, everyone lies to tell Trump what he wants to hear, not what he needs to hear, and everyone lies all the way down because they can’t get the tests needed because there aren’t enough to go around to help people make health decisions.

Everyone at CPAC is at risk here, precisely because Trump’s dumbfuckery has left us in mortal peril. That wingnuts like Malkin are kvetching over this is ironic. They all had this coming and the comeuppance isn’t going to be pretty as we learn still more people are infected and spread the disease without realizing it.

We are no where near close enough to containing the spread in the US. We’re on the Italy trend line, and Italy just locked down the entire country in an attempt to curb the spread.

They were at 600 cases just a week or so ago. We’re just past 600 cases as of last night. The more tests that are done, the numbers will climb all while Trump is busy lying that things are under control.

Heck, just last night his cronies were claiming that 2.1 tests were available or about to be shipped. “About to be shipped” is doing all the heavy lifting, since we’ve barely tested 10,000 people, let alone a million.

World War Z was a cautionary tale - and everything Trump is doing is so much more idiotic than anything described in the book at trying to contain a pandemic that we’re going to have dire real world consequences for a long time to come.

Trump’s solution to all this? Tax cuts. Payroll tax cut. Tax breaks for hotels (which he directly benefits from).

Tax cuts wont get people commuting into work or reopens schools.

My commute saw significantly fewer people on the train. Normally, it’s SRO. Today? 20-30 open seats on a train with 150 seats. Businesses are telling everyone to work from home and are instituting their business continuity plans (BCP). They don’t want to lose their employees to the disease, and containment is going to come from businesses being more proactive than Trump.

Trump, instead of focusing on the disease containment, is tweeting about polling and doing his media critic bulkshit this morning. He doesn’t care. No one in Trumpworld does. He’s ruined the CDC ability to get ahead of the outbreak, and no one can trust anyone in Trumpworld to tell the truth about the situation.

But hey, the markets are up 1,000 points on bargain hunting (which will last only as long as people don’t realize that the underlying fundamentals are no different than yesterday and the cases will increase significantly today).

Apparently, this guy has known all along that Donald Trump is, as he calls him, “deranged” — but he voted for the ocher abomination in 2016 anyway.

He reasoned that Trump’s derangement might lessen as the gravity of his office became more apparent. As we all know, the opposite happened. And now, Sterling Heights, Michigan, Mayor Michael Taylor, a lifelong Republican, is endorsing Joe Biden.

“I think Joe Biden is the candidate who can unify all of the Democrats and he’s the candidate who can appeal to moderates and Republicans like me who don’t want to see four more years of President Trump,” Taylor told the Chicago Tribune. “I remember thinking this Trump thing is insane, but when it was down to him and Hillary, I kind of said, ‘Well, you are a Republican, and yeah he’s nuts, but maybe he’ll get better and you know he’s going to lower taxes. I slowly talked myself into it. ‘He can’t seriously be this deranged once he gets in there,’ and he’s even more deranged now than I thought then. So, I take the blame. I voted for him.”

Oh, he can be — and is — that deranged. It’s been kind of like watching The Shining, except there was no act I or II. It’s been nothing but ax-swinging and talking to ghosts from the get-go.

So is there any chance the compact fluorescent light bulb is coming on for other Republicans, now that Trump is melting down faster than a Nazi’s face at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Whether you support Joe Biden or not (I myself was resolutely Team Warren until she dropped out), it’s becoming increasingly likely that he’ll be our nominee. And if Republicans are willing to pull the lever for him, hey, I’ll take it. After all, what good is Medicare for All and free college if no one’s alive to enjoy it?

Michael Taylor (R), mayor of the city of Sterling Heights, Michigan, told the Chicago Tribune that he has abandoned “deranged” President Trump and thrown his support behind Joe Biden instead.

Said Taylor: “I think Joe Biden is the candidate who can unify all of the Democrats, and he’s the candidate who can appeal to moderates and Republicans like me who don’t want to see four more years of President Trump.”

He added: “When it was down to him and Hillary, I kind of said, ‘Well, you are a Republican, and yeah he’s nuts, but maybe he’ll get better and you know he’s going to lower taxes.’ I slowly talked myself into it. ‘He can’t seriously be this deranged once he gets in there,’ and he’s even more deranged now than I thought then. So, I take the blame. I voted for him.”

We are no where near close enough to containing the spread in the US. We’re on the Italy trend line, and Italy just locked down the entire country in an attempt to curb the spread.

Good point, but I’d take issue a bit with the following:

They were at 600 cases just a week or so ago. We’re just past 600 cases as of last night.

Our population is something over 5x Italy’s, so we need to reach 3000 to get where Italy was when it was at 600.

That said, it may well happen in a week or two.

(Customer email from Harbor Freight Tools)

As communities begin to feel the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19), I want to share with you the steps we’re taking at Harbor Freight Tools to help protect the health and safety of our customers and associates, which is always our top priority.

We’re closely monitoring local and national reports on the evolving impact of COVID-19 and, based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization and applicable public health agencies, we’ve developed plans and established a task force that will allow us to respond timely and appropriately.

Our housekeeping and sanitization efforts in our stores have been greatly expanded. We’re frequently disinfecting often-touched surfaces such as door handles, countertops, keypads, restroom surfaces, shopping carts and baskets. We’re asking all of our associates (and we urge everyone) to follow the CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of the infection.

We feel deeply for those who have been affected. Thankfully, as of now, we’re not aware of any associate contracting COVID-19. But we have implemented guidelines that instruct any associate who may develop symptoms or come into contact with infected individuals to stay home and follow the CDC’s instructions. And impacted associates will be compensated for their missed work hours.

At this time, all of our stores are open for business during their regular hours to meet the needs of our customers. If we become aware of any condition in any store that would make it unsafe, please rest assured that we’ll close the store until those conditions have been addressed.

Again, the health and safety of our customers and associates are our top priority and we’re committed to doing our part to help keep you safe.

Thank you,

Eric Smidt

re: #266 garzooma

I think you’re confusing cases as a percentage of the population versus the cases identified - we’re going to follow the same trajectory (or worse) on case instances because of the failure to contain the spread of the disease. So while Italy may see spread of cases slow due to their drastic and draconian measures to lock down the entire country, it’s not likely to happen here given Trump’s dumbfuckery at every step of the crisis. That means we’ll likely see far more cases, and far more dead Americans as a result of Trump thinking that lying about numbers and test availability to minimize the numbers is the solution.

I don’t think that is an accurate comparison, because of maths.

The US has a higher population, so the number of cases needs to be scaled by that factor first, and then compared in it’s growth.

The good news is that probably gives the US an extra week to limit transmission, for which limiting proximity to other people is the main thing.

The bad news, is that I don’t think the US is going to use that time effectively.

It’s the rate of growth that matters, because it tracks with Italy, and not the total numbers driving that rate. Assuming the curve holds, our higher population means there’s just more room on the chart for the curve to go up and up.

Yes, the fact that we’re significantly bigger means our numbers should be bigger for a one-to-one comparison of the percentage of the population infected. OTOH, it’s effective in pointing out that we’re tracking pretty similar on the rate of infection and discovery, and that that the rate of increase is not constant but accellerating.

A large population would mean that we could track it’s growth sooner.

You’re measuring two separate things.

Cases growing in a population will grow regardless of the size of the population. It’s doing a doubling along known scales that the experts can measure and predict.

The difference is when it becomes a tipping point and breaks the health care system - it comes much sooner in Italy than the US due to smaller size, fewer hospitals, doctors, and potentially available resources.

We are likely to see the same case progression here in the US as in Italy, and while Italy may contain due to the lockdown, it doesn’t appear anyone in Trumpworld is willing to go against Trump who demands we just get on with our lives without caring about the consequences of doing nothing.

The one thing going for us is these cultist morons are really just dumb. Nazis and others pulled it off, for some period of time, before it collapsed. Information is harder to contain nowadays. But Trump is too stupid to take advantage of his cunning, which is his best attribute. He’s not smart, nor wise, merely cunning. But he gets in his own way because he’s obsessive, paranoid, and an idiot.

data for progress has biden over sanders 59/38 in michigan

- they also have Biden up four points in Idaho (Sanders won the caucus by 57 points in 2016)
- and biden up 6 in Washington, 30 in Missouri, and 55 in Mississippi

I refuse any optimism until after the votes have been counted. Just recall that Hillary was up 20+ points over Bernie in the Michigan primary and she lost to him. People get overconfident and then don’t vote or think they can vote for a candidate who has withdrawn and suddenly the landslide win turns into a narrow loss and the election narrative changes again.

Rather than acting on these recurrent warnings and bolstering America’s ability to respond to an outbreak, the Trump administration has instead cut back money and personnel from pandemic preparedness. In May 2018, Trump’s aides dismissed the National Security Council’s global health security staff and moved to cut its budget. The White House also cut the budgets of the Centers for Disease Control and the Department of Health and Human Services, and closed the federal government’s $30 million Complex Crises Fund.

Because that’s how Trump rolls.

re: #145 Anymouse 🌹🎃

Around here the largest coin which commonly circulates is 50¢ piece. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a dollar coin here.

We do see $10 bills but not as commonly as $5 or $1. $50 and $100 circulate here more commonly than other places because so little penetration of credit cards.

$20, $10, $5 pretty commonly used. A lot of places here have signs up that they will not take $50 or $100 bills.* Don’t see $2 or the $1 coins** very often. We probably should get rid of the $0.01 - but I imagine the massive outcry from a lot of people seeing the rounding to the nearest $0.05 or $0.10 as “big business” or “big government” trying to rip them off.

* - I presume either fear of counterfeits or that giving change for one will drain their ability to have change for other people. (Which is a concern for some businesses that do stuff like lunch crowds.) As for the counterfeits, if you get one and turn it in, do you get compensated by the bank of government?

** - Back when I got stamps from a vending machine in the post office it gave change in $1 coins.

As for the penny, my best anecdote for that is that a manager once paid for his football pool square ($1) in pennies. If he had won I would have paid him off in pennies. :)
(Yea, an asshole thing to do perhaps, but he was a bit of an ass himself.)

That really needs to be the focus right now. Get as many test kits out here as humanly possible. The larger our capacity to test, the more quickly we know where the virus is and can take countermeasures.

I mentioned earlier: GF tells me that her colleague in Düsseldorf came down with flu symptoms and went to the doc immediately for testing. His doc tole him that he had already tested over 300 patients, all negative to date, but those were not a waste of time and resources.

Germany currently has around 1100 confirmed cases with 2 fatalities.

Hasn’t this administration been doing a lot of this — meetings with GOP legislators only? the whole GOP is fine with this. Either we take back the government this November or it will be lost to us forever, with a GOP-only SCOTUS that will approve every despotic act implemented by the administration.

It was never called Chinese coronavirus — that is a new racist name developed by the GOP. Certainly Wuhan coronavirus was used for weeks — but I think most non-racists have settled on the very non-specific coronavirus in informal communications.

Having a supply of food and water makes some sense. Disasters do happen. But two million rounds of ammo is just sick in my opinion. It’s just a stupid investment.

And if not properly stored ammo *can* go bad. Especially if the primers start to break down.

I’ve seen old ammo jam a gun. Insufficient oomph from bad propellant and the bullet hung up in the barrel. Owner told me it was a complete bitch later on to get the bullet out.

This has never been a just world. And, after the election of Trump and the spread of authoritarianism, the little justice out there seems to be in retreat. But, who knows? Maybe this “Katrina” will lead to an overwhelming Democratic victory in November — or the disease will run its course in the next month and Trump skates again as he has throughout his entire life, escaping consequences for his bad decisions.
