She Who Must Be Obeyed plays in a local Americana/Western Swing band (they had a scheduled gig last Saturday at The Green Mesquite on Barton Springs Road, but, well, you know…) and that is one of their usual three farewell songs, along with White Cliffs of Dover and Happy Trails.

That was a lovely piece. Thanks, Charles.

Oh, at about half their gigs, John Burnett (of NPR) sits in as their harmonica player. Right now, he’s the best mouth harp player in town. SWMBO is the best stunt stringed harp player in town across all genres.

I’d say that a previous criminal record is considered a death sentence to these folks, but lets be real: black skin is considered deserving of death to them. The criminal record is just justification after the fact.

Here’s the Worldometer (which the White House follows) #’s for today:

worldometers.info

Go about 40% down the post to the daily deaths in the US page.

There is the usual Saturday, Sunday, Monday decrease in reported deaths, but Tuesday and Wednesday have blown up to almost 4,900 deaths over the last two days.

This is surprising, given that New Jersey and New York are over the first hump. What it says is the rest of the country is filling in the gap and jumping. Fast.

With numerous States easing restrictions last week, we can expect that number to skyrocket. We may be seeing 3,000 a day, 9/11 numbers, by Friday. Even if it levels off at +/- 3,000 per day for the rest of May, that’s 135,000 by the end of the month and if it continues at that rate, 225,000 by the end of June.

So much winning.

Fuck my life.

Already starting to spread false information about him as well. Ran into a racist on Twitter claiming he was “12-miles” from home and “wearing flip-flops” so he couldn’t have been jogging and was obviously a burglar. Both claims are false, of course. He was close to home, wearing running shoes. (When I asked how he was supposedly burglarizing homes in flip flops and without a vehicle to put stolen goods in, the guy got very defensive).

Same reason Trayvon Martin was treated as a suspect: White men saw a black guy, decided he looked “suspicious,” decided they were gonna make an “arrest” and hold him against his will until the cops showed up.

And (of course), the white men are insisting that he attacked them without warning, forcing them to shoot him in “self defense.” And since it’s a white-on-black crime, wingnuts are rushing to muddy the water in order to taint any possible jury pool.

Man arrested after disrupting salute to first responders, waving gun, police said (ABC Philadelphia)

DARBY, Pennsylvania — One man is in custody after police say he disrupted a salute to health care workers and led them on a chase through Delaware County.

According to investigators, the suspect drove an SUV through a parade of first responders who were paying tribute to the staff at Mercy Fitzgerald Medical Center Tuesday night.

Officers said the man threatened to hurt people while waving a gun.

Police said the chase came to an end when the man lost control of the car at Main Street and MacDade Boulevard in Darby.

The name of the man in custody has not been released.

This is where you have to reject the whole framing of the “argument”. Is he stating that anyone with an arrest record is outlaw and can be killed on sight? Because I’d bet a lot of those bubbas have seen the inside of the county lockup. It’s only those with a certain…quality.

It’s a case involving a white shooter and a black victim, so the effort is now going to be to give the former a strong case of “self-defense.” Hence dragging in any past criminality activity, even if it’s so much as a warrant for unpaid child support. It’s about playing dime store shrink to insist that a “crook” would act violently when confronted because “they don’t want to go back to jail.” They’ll try to placate any fence-sitters on the jury by acting mournful that Arbery was killed, but insist his own actions are to blame and the men who hunted him down should not be imprisoned for acting to defend themselves.

You’re going to see wingnuts and anti-vaxxers pushing an upcoming “documentary” called “Plandemic,” the trailer of which is being promoted massively across YouTube. (YouTube saying they would take down misinformation about coronavirus? Yeah, that’s a lie—never get between a libertarian and their money. It’s why when atheists first started noticing Covid-19 misinformation and started countering it, resulting in their videos being de-monitised, they named the subject “that subject which cannot be named on YouTube.”)

Dr. Jeff Holiday (a pseudo-medicine and religion counterapologist) takes apart the trailer and every single claim in it. It also shows that it takes an order of magnitude of information to counteract propaganda.

The claim is a physician who was a prominent AIDS researcher (no) was harassed for blowing the whistle on how AIDS research was conducted (no) and was harassed and jailed without charge (no), is persecuted (no), and is now a fearless whistleblower against Dr. Fauci covering up AIDS research (no), showing why Covid-19 is created in a lab (no to creation and lab), and Fauci or “them” are covering this up (no), to get vaccine patents for obscene profits (no, but she’s “entirely” not an anti-vaxxer even though she claims all vaccines are bullshyte and none work).

It’s worth watching though it’s kind of long, so you can go after a wingnut, anti-vaxxer, or libertarian (sometimes these are all the same person) when they make a specific claim which has an origin in this upcoming movie. Every claim in the movie is wrong.

That’s what a back-of-the-house employee at a Hillstone Restaurant Group establishment in Dallas was told last week, as restaurants prepared to reopen at 25% capacity, according to CBS Dallas.

That employee, who did not want to be identified publicly, expressed discomfort and was told to think about it — and then was removed from the schedule, the employee told CBS Dallas’ Brooke Rogers.

Another employee said some agreed to work because they were offered a 40-hour work week, but were told if they declined, they wouldn’t be eligible for rehire.

Nope. People should be held accountable for mishandling the Coronavirus pandemic. This can’t be swept under the rug given all of the unnecessary deaths and damage to our economy. Trump intentionally chose to downplay the seriousness of a highly contagious disease and even now is encouraging idiots to disregard stay at home orders in a vain attempt to “liberate” states from Democratic governors.

All the way down at the bottom of the Military Times article is the answer.

However, given the limited research on COVID-19, there are likely a few factors that military medical professionals are trying to hash out when it comes to recruiting survivors: Whether respiratory damage from the virus is long-lasting or permanent, and whether that can be assessed; the likelihood of recurring flare-ups, even if someone has had two consecutive negative tests; and the possibility that one bout of COVID-19 might not provide full immunity for the future, and could potentially leave someone at a higher risk to contract it again, perhaps with worse complications.

The move comes as the services prepare for a surge of post-graduation recruits during the summer and fall high season.

In recent weeks, new trainees have been 100-percent tested for COVID-19 before starting training. So far, clusters have been discovered at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, the Army and Marine Corps’ biggest initial entry training installations.

(The Hill) - Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose traded barbs with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Wednesday, noting the number of Americans killed during the coronavirus pandemic and saying the Trump Cabinet secretary is “officially an asshole.”

“It’s official!” the rock star and Trump critic wrote on his seldom-used Twitter account.

In a surprise move, Mnuchin responded and asked, “What have you done for the country lately?”

Social media users were quick to note that Mnuchin had initially used the emoji of the Liberia flag, which includes a single star, instead of the U.S. flag.

The Treasury chief quickly deleted his original tweet and replaced it with one featuring the correct flag.

The switch did not go unnoticed by Rose, who sarcastically tweeted that he “didn’t get we’re hoping 2 emulate Liberia’s economic model.”

The musician then elaborated on his initial criticism of the Trump administration, saying he (Rose) was not responsible for more than 70,000 deaths.

Imagine traveling back in time to 2009 and telling someone that in 2020 Donald Trumps Treasury Secretary would get into (and lose) a Twitter spat with Axl Rose in the middle of a Pandemic that had killed 70 000 people.

I believe it. IANAL, but it seemed to me that the statute the feds were using wasn’t particularly suited to this — it was mainly aimed at people personally profiting from their actions. We need laws that apply more clearly to abuses of power like this, or the Ukraine scandal.

The Army is having enough issues (at least at low levels) now with handling BCT. Have to quarantine new recruits when they arrive for two weeks, and probably with their drill sergeants or other NCOs there with them - and probably with limited or no access to areas to do any real work with them. And I expect the officers trying to handle the companies are understaffed, or very limited in how they can shift NCOs about due to exposure risks. And I’d also guess they don’t have PPE or other equipment.

There have been very few Supreme Court cases involving the government’s power to deal with the spread of communicable diseases. The most relevant decision for today was issued in Jacobson vs. Massachusetts in 1905. In that case, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of a state law requiring compulsory vaccinations against smallpox. The court declared, “Upon the principle of self-defense, of paramount necessity, a community has the right to protect itself against an epidemic of disease which threatens the safety of its members.”

The court explicitly rejected the claim that “liberty” under the Constitution includes the right of individuals to make decisions about their own health in instances where those decisions could endanger others. But the court also made clear that restrictions imposed by the government to control communicable diseases must have a “real or substantial relation” to protecting public health.

Op-Ed: Yes, the government can restrict your liberty to protect public health (Los Angeles Times, more at the link)

A very Happy Birthday!!

Around here, in the time of the plague, children are celebrating this occasion by car parades. And if the fire department doesn’t have a real emergency at the the time, they will send a truck with sirens blaring to honor the child. This morning, a couple blocks from my house, there were over a dozen cars + fire truck + police vehicle lined up ready to start.

This is where you have to reject the whole framing of the “argument”. Is he stating that anyone with an arrest record is outlaw and can be killed on sight? Because I’d bet a lot of those bubbas have seen the inside of the county lockup. It’s only those with a certain…quality.

ETA: To take this further, is he suggesting that anyone who has violated gun laws can be shot on sight?

They did not know who he was and at the time he was engaged in the perfectly legal act of jogging. So any prior arrest is irrelevant. The Trayvon Martin case has emboldened all these racists itching to kill African-Americans.

Russia confirmed 11,231 new coronavirus infections Thursday, bringing the country’s official number of cases to 177,160 and marking a new one-day record rise in infections.

Russia now has the world’s second-fastest rate of new infections behind the United States. It is the fifth most-affected country in terms of infections, surpassing Germany and France on Thursday.

Eighty-eight people died over the past 24 hours, bringing the total toll to 1,625.

And that means how many people have to die to get there? Less than 3% of the population has been exposed to date. 75,000 dead Americans. Now, let’s do the fucking math. How many die to get us to herd immunity? 30% gets you 750,000 dead. 60% gets you 1.5 million.

But for Trump’s complete and total mishandling of this crisis we would not have had an economic collapse or the death toll. Had he engaged in a competent handling of the pandemic, we would not have seen a massive collapse of the economy, widespread shutdowns, and 75,000+ dead.

How do we know? Because South Korea did it. They have a NY sized city. Seoul. They were able to avoid the catastrophic death tolls we have here. They did it with aggressive testing and contact tracing, both of which have been in short supply in the US.

That’s entirely on Trump. All of it.

He done gone and fucked up. And the GOP are fine with the fuckup.

Meanwhile we learn once again that he was convinced that this would disappear and go away. He didn’t want testing because that would make him look bad.

It always comes back to that. He doesn’t care what happens to anyone else, if it makes him look bad.

Well guess what you fucknut know nothing bigot - this is making you look even worse than being impeached and being an unindicted coconspirator on felony crimes and lusting after your adult daughter and sleeping with an adult film star while your third wife is recovering from giving birth to one of your kids.

Some serious economic impact and a certain death toll were inevitable.

But Trump’s tunnel vision only saw any economic downturn as a threat to his re-election and failed to recognize (or recognized too late) that people will rally around a strong leader in times of crisis.

Because he has no concept of leadership nor does he have the resources to let others implement it in his name. Now he is trying to turn it into a wartime scenario, because that is something that he can wrap his brain around.

True enough. We would have seen localized closures and disruptions, but nothing on the scale we’re seeing here.

Whereas other countries are reopening for business and have robust testing in place, we are now the epicenter of the pandemic because of Trump’s failure to act.

The opposite in fact. Trump was the one who stayed silent during the Hong Kong protests. Trump is the one who doesn’t mention the Uyghurs. Trump has praised China’s biggest proxy in Kim Jong Un. And Trump has strengthened China’s geopolitical power through alienating our geographical allies in that part of the world and it started with how he withdrew from TPP and continued to do so. I’m hoping that FP is a top priority of a Biden administration. Trump’s actions internationally have hurt us.

OK: so a major theme of that “Death Star” campaign is going to be obsessive China-bashing?

Probably mostly unrelated to real-world policy/diplomacy/economics, but mainly just to try to paint Biden/Democrats as “not tough enough” on their xenophobic Boogeyman-of-the-Month Year?

IMHO, it’s unlikely to work well outside the usual “base” - and (if the D campaign gets it act together, easily refuted): but it’s just indicative of how little the Trump Admin and the GOP really have to run on….

Oh, and “only Trump can fix/revive the economy”: how? By returning to Obama-era economic policies?? Kind of a flaw in that argument, too.

Maybe — and maybe not. If the pandemic team had not been disbanded, if PREDICT were not canceled, if the American epidemiologist embedded in China’s CDC had not been removed — we might have been on this in November when supposedly the first hints of the Wuhan disaster were unfolding and COVID-19 may never have become a pandemic. It might have been possible to stop this early and prevent its worldwide spread.

Yes — there is a problem because it can be transmitted by people who are asymptomatic or who have mild symptoms and therefore perhaps a pandemic was inevitable, but we will never know since we cannot explore the alternative approach. But I’m sticking to the thesis that Trump is responsible for this global crisis.

Biden can point to that he was more focused on the virus when most people were writing his campaign off than Trump was. Biden was writing an op ed about this in January. A University of Maryland analysis of anonymized smartphone data shows that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp’s lifting of state-ordered business closures has had the predictable, and warned-of, effect: More than 62,000 additional out-of-state visitors are arriving daily. That’s a 13% increase in state-to-state travel.

According to The Washington Post’s writeup, almost all of that traffic came from adjacent Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida, four states where business restrictions kept restaurants, theaters and other nonessential service businesses closed when Georgia’s reopened. Georgia, then, created a near-perfect scenario for spreading the virus inside and outside the state.

This has been a surprising turn of events to me. I was expecting Putin to conceal this outbreak entirely, and at least minimize the numbers being reported. It is certainly very likely that the numbers are so bad that even Putin could not suppress all the data and that he is releasing a much lower set of cases and deaths than actually occur. And that the defenestrations were a result of doctors pushing to get the real numbers out there.

Trump and his minions are downplaying the extent of the pandemic here and, simultaneously, promoting the notion that the deaths are not important compared to good economic numbers.

My financial analyst (who does hate Trump) keeps posting on how we need to get the economy going. He sees the devastation among small businesses and is also eager to be out again, enjoying friends, theater, etc. But he does have cognitive dissonance — his wife has serious health issues and he is very careful in minimizing risk to her. If we had done what South Korea had done, we’d be magnitudes better than where we are economically and with the death toll.

South Korea currently has around 10,000 cases and 256 deaths. Their overall population is 51 million. So since the US is 328 million, that’s roughly 6.5 times bigger. We’d expect about 65,000 cases and 1,664 deaths.

Heck, if we were even 10x higher than that (mirroring the H1N1 flu outbreak under Obama, we’d be far better off than with Trump’s disastrous handling).

Putin has always been less secure in his leadership than we acknowledge. It’s definitely harder to sell nationalism right now. It would be hilarious to me if Putin’s aid of Trump would ultimately result in his own destruction and I think it’s possible. You want to make the case for Biden with mentioning Trump? Alright, let’s start with “history of getting shit done.”

And don’t give me that “Amendment King” horseshit. Bernie has had 30+ years to get major legislation off the ground. The only kingly thing he has done is make plenty of excuses for his failures.

They just do things differently in Texas, don’t you know:

Texas governor, state court call for release of jailed salon owner who illegally reopened

AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Dallas County officials to free salon owner Shelley Luther from jail while its nine judges, all Republicans, weigh an appeal challenging her incarceration as improper.

The emergency order directed county officials to release Luther, who reopened her salon despite state restrictions, on a personal bond with no money required, “pending final disposition of her case.”

County officials also were ordered to file a response to the challenge by 4 p.m. Monday, the same day Luther’s weeklong sentence for contempt of court would have ended.

The order came shortly after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, seeking to end a political firestorm over Luther’s jailing, announced Thursday that local officials will be prohibited from jailing Texans for violating any of his numerous coronavirus-related executive orders.

So, what’s the over/under on how many days it will be before Hannity devotes the entire hour of his show to interviewing Gregory and Travis McMichael, as he did with Dog the Bounty Hunter?

This shit keeps happening, and indirectly because of people like Hannity muddying the water enough so there’s no true justice.

And the audacity of that fuckwad to say there’s a “two tiered justice system!”

Congratulations to former Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, and all others involved, on a complete and total exoneration (with a 9-0 vote by the U.S. Supreme Court) on the Obama DOJ Scam referred to as “Bridgegate.” The Democrats….

Just so we’re clear, Trump doesn’t see anything wrong with abusing children on school buses to go after political opponents.

I always thought the BridgeGate scandal should be used to frame the Ukraine scandal. “Abuse of power” is too vague a term. “Child abuse” is more likely to get people to notice what’s at stake.

“Dropping the case” was pretty much their only option by this point.

The judge wasn’t buying the conspiracy theories that Flynn’s new QAnon counsel was floating for why the plea deal should be circular-filed, and without that happening the only remaining question was how much jail time he was looking at. So by “dropping the case,” the DOJ has just obviated the need for Donny to wait until after sentencing to take action.

Yeah.
A quote from that asshole’s partner via the Balloon Juice link in #310:
(Burkman pitching that woman to make a false assault claim against Dr. Anthiny Fauci):

“Mother Nature has to clean the barn every so often,” Burkman counters. “How real is it? Who knows? So what if 1 percent of the population goes? So what if you lose 400,000 people? Two hundred thousand were elderly, the other 200,000 are the bottom of society. You got to clean out the barn. If it’s real, it’s a positive thing, for God’s sake.”

Various barnyard epithets come to mind…

Minor shit storm on Facebook among acquaintances and such since many are Pennsylvanians.

Speaker of the House in PA dropped this out last night.

m.facebook.com

It’s producing the expected pile of We closed the state for no reason!” outcries. And being liked/linked by the usual suspects among my friends.

1. I heavily suspect he cherry-picked the information he was given so that only the statistics that supported his outlook were in the letter.

2. There is concern about controlling COVID-19 spread if it gets into nursing homes because it’s a concentrated group of people who would be more susceptible to it.

3. There’s the usual jump into “look at all the comorbidity factors of the those who died!” point. Without, of course, providing any supporting statistics on how widely these same conditions are in the state population at large.

4. He doesn’t touch on, and the rabid comments are of course overlooking, that if everything was open the virus would be getting to the elderly who are not in nursing homes or assisted care facilities more easily. And then killing them.

5. The final stats on how the PA hospitals are not getting overwhelmed (yet) is good news, but being spun by the rabid ones as another indication that the virus is not a threat. (And of course, it’s a misleading statistic since it doesn’t tell you whether the hospitals in the hot spots like eastern PA near Philadelphia *are* actually close to being overwhelmed while there are lots of empty beds and ICU slots in other parts of the state that are less affected (again, yet.)

In summary, same shit we’ve already seen from the Republicans about COVID-19 already. Seem to be more interested in partisan sniping at the governor than seriously looking into and reporting accurately on what is good for the citizens of the state.

re: #257 Charles Johnson

And we don’t even know yet if herd immunity works with this virus. It has not been established that people can’t be reinfected after recovering once.

And if exposure to diseases conferred herd immunity, we wouldn’t have diseases.

Measles infected nearly everyone, yet measles still exists. It was nearly wiped out until the anti-vaxxers helped bring it back.

Mumps was the same way. Thanks to the anti-vaxxer who almost killed me in 2012.

Chickenpox never was wiped out either until a vaccine came along.

Smallpox was around for thousands of years until a vaccine programme wiped it out.

Tuberculosis is still around today and its been around for thousands of years.

Diseases do not confer herd immunity. Vaccines do. Herd immunity depends on the particular disease. We will not have herd immunity from Covid-19 until we have a vaccine; this is the new normal.

re: #253 lawhawk

What percentage of the population has to be exposed to get us herd immunity?
50%? 70% 95%?

And that means how many people have to die to get there? Less than 3% of the population has been exposed to date. 75,000 dead Americans. Now, let’s do the fucking math. How many die to get us to herd immunity? 30% gets you 750,000 dead. 60% gets you 1.5 million.

Last estimate that I have read of R-naught (R0) for COVID-19 is actually 5.7 which is huge. This according to: healthline.com

Herd Immunity is figured out from an equation:

Herd Immunity Decimal > 1 - (1/R0)

Via: plus.maths.org (They are estimating 2.5 for R0, which is old info as far as I know)

x > 1-(1/5.7)
x > .825

So in this case herd immunity would require a greater than 82.5% of the population to either be infected & survive or vaccinated. Even if R0 is actually 2.5, that’s still 60%. Relying on herd immunity outside of a vaccine is asinine.
