The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Tom Huizenga | May 11, 2022
The conflicts between Russia and Ukraine reach far and wide, even deep into this Tiny Desk (home) concert performed by the ARC Ensemble — artists from Canada’s Royal Conservatory in Toronto. They offer music by the neglected composer Dmitri Klebanov, a Ukrainian Jew whose career was sidelined by the Stalin regime when his First Symphony was denounced in 1949.

Klebanov wrote his Fourth String Quartet — from which the ensemble plays excerpts — three years earlier. He dedicated it to his compatriot, the composer Mykola Leontovych who, as a Ukrainian separatist, was murdered by the Soviet secret police in 1921.

The opening movement will sound familiar. Klebanov riffs on a Leontovych melody best known in the West as the Christmas chestnut “Carol of the Bells.” The sparkling second movement, played largely in pizzicato, again draws from a Leontovych tune, this time inspired by the Hungarian bagpipe. Listen for the wheezy drone in the viola.

To introduce the final, folk music-inspired section, cellist Tom Wiebe recalls stories from his Ukrainian grandfather. As a musician, he formed an ensemble of string players who stuck together through the Russian Revolution and the following civil war. They even played, reluctantly, for Soviet Red Army soldiers who occupied their village. Wiebe’s parents left Ukraine in the 1920s and settled in Canada.

The ARC Ensemble dedicates this performance to the people of Ukraine.

Oh yeah, this was posted two threads ago.

Former students describe ‘toxic’ environment, astral projection under Leesburg band director

Well, you *might* think it was some sort of New Age crazy along with sexual abuse of students. The latter is true, but the former, I don’t think so. It is someone operating under the cover of Evangelical Protestantism. In fact, based on what I read, I’d say someone mischaracterized the “astral projection,” and it was likely some sort of “visionary experience” probably out of the Charismatic side of Evangelical Protestantism.

See for yourself:

The articles of incorporation say its primary purpose was “not for profit missions and teaching activities for the greater evangelical Christian church globally.”

*snip*

Fielder ran a YouTube channel called “Isaiah 58 Ten,” which has since been deleted. The Daily Commercial reviewed the channel and its videos before it was gone.

The about section read:

“We were originally called The Elder Council. At the beginning of this group the Lord personally taught us how to hear His voice, rightly divide the Word, and operate in His gifts scripturally. We came to know him as Savior and Teacher. The Elder Council has concluded a group, but we will leave these videos up as a testimony to what the Father has taught us. The work continues as He opens a new book and teaches each of us to minister to Him as our King. New videos will reflect that focus. May His Kingdom come, and His will be done in each of us and on earth as in Heaven.”

More behind the button. It’s many paragraphs.

That’s an expensive fire.

Way more than the fires in New Mexico. Heck, back when I lived there, they burned a million acres, and only 12 structures, most of them ‘outbuildings’. One residence. Of course, a few years before that, just before they changed the terminology from ‘Controlled Burn’ to ‘Prescribed Burn’, they lost about a third of Los Alamos residences.

Meanwhile, Repubs at the state level have made clear that they don’t just want to ban abortions within their own borders, they want to find some way to make the very act of traveling out of the state to seek an abortion a crime as well. It probably won’t happen next year, but within the next 2-3 years there will be one or more women on trial for the “crime” of traveling to another state to receive an abortion.

As a “NuWho” fan, I’m not as worried about who plays The Doctor as I am who writes for the show. Because I personally feel like the last two seasons were a total travesty and that Jodi deserved so much better than to have a run in the series only slightly less infamous than Colin Baker’s as the Sixth Doctor.

Yep. Minors will be barred from crossing state lines to seek out abortions, and any adults involved will be charged with “aiding and abetting.” And the whole thing will be sold as “child safety,” with the usual suspects suggesting that the only reason for an adult to help a child/teen seek an abortion is because they’re “pedophiles” or “human traffickers.”

Yeah, it’s something that’s been frustrating, because a lot of asshole “fans” have tried to blame Jodi for how bad the last two seasons have been as a way to justify their refusal to accept a female Doctor. Granted, a lot of these same assholes hated Capaldi (too old) and Smith (too young) when they were first announced.

I just read a bunch of nasty comments about the new Tolkien series: how dare they have a black, or brown, or Asian or whatever as an elf, a hobbit, a dwarf. I hope none of them watch it, and just boil over on themselves, and leave the rest of us to enjoy another visit to Middle Earth.

Yeah, unfortunately I had to pass that event horizon this past week. I’d been listening to fellow Trek “fans” bitching for years now about “woke” Trek in light of Discovery’s lead being a black woman and the cast including two gay men as well as various female actresses in prominent roles rather than the “traditional” mostly male cast. And mostly I just ignored it because like Who, I have no problem with the casting so much as the atrocious writing.

Then came this past week, when the great first episode of Strange New Worlds drops…and I hear that the same “fans” are bitching that the Enterprise’s bridge crew are mostly women. FFS

For Jodie at her best (along with other “Doctors” AND Olivia Coleman), Broadchurch is the way to go.

You do realize, don’t you, that this is/was a kid’s tv program. Back in the day, aged 14 in 1963, I groaned at the Daleks and the ‘radiophonic workshop’ noises.

As far as I can tell, nothing much has changed. All this posturing about gender/race has nothing whatsoever to do with the original ‘plot’. Which, btw, was mostly about keeping 7 year olds in front of the ‘tube’ on an early Saturday evening, whilst their parents prepared dinner.

I did, actually. Whole thing was originally supposed to be not only a way to keep the kids focused on the “idiot’s lantern” so the folks could throw together dinner, but it was also supposed to be an educational show. That was the whole point of making The Doctor a time traveler with companions in tow, the latter there to serve as audience surrogates while he would be the typical 60s-era professor lecturing his students about various historical events and famous figures of history. The studio ended up realizing that the format was bunk, but that the idea of a wandering alien traveling across time and space had potential and just dropped the educational angle to focus on that.

I think Octave drove Matlab to think it has to offer something cheaper, and then I think Mathematica followed suit.

The guy wrote Broadchurch, which was a great series, but he couldn’t think Doctor Who scale.

I don’t know whether to blame Chibnall or the Beeb, since both Davies and Moffat also had clinkers during their runs and the execs were notorious for doing/demanding a lot of stupid shit that hurt the series overall. Not that this is anything new for Who, the aforementioned Sixth Doctor run being constantly saddled with weird and/or unpopular demands because management had changed and the new guy in charge hated the series with a passion.

Time travel was there from Day One. Rewatch “An Unearthly Child.” Seriously, the production of the classic series is well documented.

When Repubs thought that Ukraine would fall in a matter of days or even hours, they were openly supportive of Russia’s attempt at conquest or suggested it was “none of our business.” Then Ukraine stopped Russia’s advance and even began fighting back, Repubs shifted without a clutch to waving flags and voicing their “support” for the Ukrainian people. Now that the war has started to fade from the public’s attention, they’re back to trying to help Russia out by cutting off aid to Ukraine via whining about “overspending.”

Looks like Sweden will be handing in its NATO application on Monday, 16 May:

Sweden and Finland are now taking rapid and coordinated steps towards the historic decision to apply for membership in the Defense Alliance.

At nine o’clock today, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin and President Sauli Niinistö sent out a press release stating that they are in favor of Finnish NATO membership and that Finland must submit an application “without delay”.

Later in the day, the Swedish Social Democrats will hold the last digital membership meeting on the NATO issue.

Tomorrow, the security policy analysis group where all parliamentary parties are represented will be ready with their report which will be presented at a press conference at 10. There will be no clear writing that Sweden should join NATO but the conclusion will be clear between the lines, according to several sources. The Left Party and the Green Party, which are both opposed to NATO membership, are expected to make reservations.

On Sunday 15 May, the Social Democratic Party board will hold an extra meeting where they are expected to make the decision to apply for membership.

The next day, on Monday 16 May at 10.30, there will be an extra parliamentary debate on the security policy analysis. According to previous information on the Riksdag’s website, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson would submit a “feedback report”, but that information has now been removed and replaced with information about the extra debate.

According to Expressen’s sources, the Prime Minister will convene an extra government meeting later on Monday where the historic decision will be made. Immediately after the meeting, the application for the NATO application will be submitted, if nothing unforeseen occurs.

Apparently the Kremlin psy-ops boys are trying again with the whole “It’s wrong to support America’s ‘proxy war’ because Ukrainians are dying on their behalf.” The idea being that if we (read: the West) just pulled support from this ‘proxy war,’ then the fighting would end because Ukraine would have no way to continue fighting. Which is totally in keeping with the MAGAt neo-isolationist view that the only time America should get involved in world politics is when we spend nothing and yet get all the rewards.

That’s definitely true. I have a preference for Mathematica, but I’m very rusty on it, and perhaps Matlab has dealt with some of the issues that bothered me. It will be about what works for you personally at least as much as it is about objective strengths and weaknesses.

I was hoping to find someone that would teach my son and me how to weld over the summer. I’m coming up with no hits. First, I was hoping to find just a place that taught it, but nothing around here. No luck on the close community colleges nearby. Someone suggested asking the welding supply places, but there are none really close. Any other ideas?

Go to harbor freight and buy him a wire feed welder.
You can start with 110 volt, but it really is worth it to go to 220. It isn’t hard to wire a receptacle.
A wire feed welder is easier to use. Buy flux wire, that way you do not need gas (to start, to weld aluminum you will need gas).

Buy a 4” grinder (don’t buy the cheap one, with a switch, it will bite you. If you let it go it should shut off, don’t ask me how I know this.)

If you have a metal supplier in your area, buy scrap steel, I go to Albany Steel. but most farm stores and Lowes and Home Depot have very expensive steel.

and of course Weld.com for guidance.

Once he masters that, he can branch out to aluminum, tig, and stick welding.

If he really gets into it, my plasma cutter has been awesome, and no consumables.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The mrs is still dealing with covid symptoms, and we’re masking in house to minimize chance that anyone else gets it. I’ve had some symptoms but all my tests have been negative thus far. I’m masking as well.

All of this sucks. But I also know that if we weren’t fully vaxxed/boosted, one or both of us would already be hospitalized. That’s how bad it was before the vaccines. That doesn’t make dealing with this any easier.

It also means we can’t do things like visit new restaurants like the new Laser Wolf in Brooklyn. We loved Solomonov’s food, enjoy his cooking style, and it would be awesome to go back to the old stomping grounds.

We had a power blip that was just long enough to kill some of the more sensitive electronics, but the more tolerant stuff - such as, ironically enough, my router and modem - were able to survive on the reduced voltage. Literally a “blink and you’ll miss it” power blip. We’re supposed to get another round tonight, according to my weather app, so brace yourself and your guests, if you’re working tonight.

North Korea fired three ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast on Thursday, South Korea said, in the latest such move by the isolated country racing to advance its weapons programmes on the day it first reported a COVID-19 outbreak.

Japan’s coastguard also confirmed the launch of a ballistic missile by North Korea, citing its military. The projectile appeared to fall outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, public broadcaster NHK said.

Notices issued in several Shanghai districts in recent days ordered residents to stay home and barred them from receiving nonessential deliveries as part of a “Quiet period” lasting until Wednesday or longer.

I, I, I, I have no comment.

Andy Dick was arrested Wednesday for felony sexual battery, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed to Page Six.

Sgt. Scott Steinle told us police received a call at around 9 a.m. local time from a campground facility in O’Neill Regional Park in California. They believe the call was placed by the alleged victim of the sexual assault, who is an adult male.

Police have not released the man’s name. However, a YouTube channel titled “Captain Content RV” - which captured the arrest and events leading up to it - revealed a man who goes by the name of “JJ” accused Dick, 56, of molesting him in his sleep.

Around the 3:10 mark of a clip from the livestream, a disoriented “JJ” can be heard telling another person in the recreational vehicle what he claims occurred.

He says hesitantly, “I was just in bed right now, and I smelled certain parts of my body … [I was] in the other RV with Andy, and … the last thing I remember, we were on the phone with his fiancée … I smelled parts of myself and they smell like artificial smells.”

The streamer then alleged that he thought he had lotion or lube-like substance in his butt.
“Did you take my cocaine?” he asks the streamer, who replies, “No, I didn’t even take it whenever it was offered.”

Inflation - CPI - is comprised of multiple price points. Fuel costs are a lion’s share of CPI, and that’s driving the bulk of inflation here in the US. Supply chain issues are another issue, where demand outstrips supply. Food costs are rising because of higher costs to get food to table, including lack of workers in food processing and fields (those happen to be a lot of undocumented workers at that).

That’s also how it’s worked in practice, generally speaking… until the last couple of weeks. Not only did Politico get an early copy of Samuel Alito’s draft decision in Dobbs, but both that outlet and The Washington Post appear to have a mole in the Supreme Court building, or a bug in the justices’ deliberation room, or something, because everything that happens there seems to be front-page news within hours.

this is already the greatest embarrassment for a chief justice in over a century.

Nine months after a newlywed couple were found shot dead at a Utah campsite, police publicly identified a suspect for the first time and said the man has since killed himself.

Adam Pinkusiewicz confessed to killing the two women before his death, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

He used to work at the same McDonald’s restaurant as Crystal Turner, 38, who was gunned down along with her wife, Kylen Schulte, 24. The pair were married since April of last year.

This is all Thomas. He’s leaking to his Christian fascist wife Ginni. She’s then leaking to the media.

So when GOPers all claim they want to investigate and prosecute, start there. We’ll see precisely zero indication they want to go through with impeach/removal, even though his actions deserve it.

Probably. We know that Justice is a potted plant and that his wife comes from a family that’s so theocratic right-wing authoritarian that other Republicans thought of them as crazy back before the crazy spread through the party.

Not just MAGAt. It’s a long standing Ron Paul view of FP. Our brother’s stated view in the past was that we need sufficient weaponry so no one attacks us; Europeans should take care of themselves. He really thought that Europe could have handled the Germans in the 1930’s, though I’m not sure if he still holds those views.

Here’s some more information about that “Villages of Vigneto” project. The Army Corps of Engineers suspended the permit in July 2020. But the whole thing is *insane*. Basically, it was going to increase the population of Benson (basically a village of 5,000 people) to 70,000. And if you’ve been out there, it’s mostly desert with some scattered mountainous areas with a different climate (the name escapes me at the moment). Of course, these guys would have to pump groundwater and it would have an adverse impact on the San Pedro river and surrounding areas.

One theory I heard on NPR yesterday about the discrepancy between the falling price of crude and the rising price of gas is that it may turn out to be gas station owners holding the line trying to claw out some profits since people are still driving as much as ever. One of my best friends grew up in the gas station business—his dad owned three or four and he inherited and ran one in his late 20s. For him selling gas brought little profit. It was his two-bay garage that made money. He got out because he wasn’t cut out for that world, but also because he realized that to really make money he needed to convert into a convenience store operation and he didn’t want to deal with it. So I guess I can see the temptation to keep prices high (though I’m not sure the theory holds water at all).

re: #195 Barefoot Grin

The thing is, if there’s a wide discrepancy between the price gas is being sold to stations and the price they’re selling it for, the first guy to drop his prices even 5 cents will make an absolute KILLING, which would then prompt a race to the bottom. So either there’s collusion there that needs to be investigated, or it’s something else. My own suspicion is that gas is being sold to stations on futures, and so the prices we’re seeing are prices that were negotiated when oil was more in flux. The prices should come down in weeks, once the futures that are being sold to stations have caught up to current oil prices.

I hope that’s true. Or at least doesn’t rise when the summer gas prices usually do. These prices are doing a number on everyone, but especially the very, very many Silverado/F-150/Ram drivers around here.

Indirectly related: also on the same program there was an interview with a Boston pizzeria owner who said that he’d like to pass on the price increases, but as soon as he tries people stop buying pizzas. He was happy to survive the worst of covid only to find that he might have to close due to the vise he’s in over costs.

It’s not like President Biden can wave his magic pen and make the price go down to $3/gallon tomorrow, nor can Congress pass a magical law, nor can SCOTUS bang their gavel and say, “Here’s an injunction.” Nobody can actually do anything except wait it out - oh, and blame the Democrats anyway, despite that not being how any of this works.

I’m dreaming of an affordably priced 3080ti once this grift collapses.

The cryptocurrency market continued to hemorrhage money Thursday, with the most popular coins down double-digit percentages over the past 24 hours. And absolutely no one knows when things will bottom out, with many people worried the entire market of fake digital money could go to zero as the stablecoin Tether officially traded below $1 for the first time ever early Thursday.

Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency in the world, is down 11.2% over the past day, currently sitting at $27,959—roughly 58% lower than its all-time high of $69,000 in mid-November. Ethereum has struggled even worse in the past 24 hours, down 19.9% to a price of $1,930.

The culprit for the crypto bloodbath was a chain reaction that started over the weekend when Terra’s stablecoin, TerraUSD, which is theoretically supposed to stay at $1, became “depegged” and started trading below a dollar. That sent shockwaves through the crypto community, since stablecoins are supposedly backed by real assets and aren’t just Monopoly money. At least that was the promise, despite investigative reporters finding it’s all a game of smoke and mirrors.

Tether, the most popular stablecoin in the world, also depegged for the first time early Thursday, dipping to $0.95 on major exchanges before recovering slightly to $0.98 as of this writing. But even at $0.98, the utility of a stablecoin is completely obliterated because it’s not worth precisely $1, causing speculators to rush in and try to make money by buying Tethers at a cheaper price on the assumption they can be sold for $1 later. And that’s exactly the kind of volatility that you already have with cryptocurrencies and doesn’t help people looking for a safe haven asset that can more easily be used to convert to fiat.

Terra’s Luna, the fourth most popular cryptocurrency in the world as of early Monday, has plunged another 98% in the past 24 hours. Currently trading at just $0.04, the crypto was worth over $87 just a week ago, and $54 early Monday. Anecdotes have popped up on social media sites like Reddit about people losing their entire life’s savings in the Luna collapse, though Gizmodo could not independently verify any of those stories yet.

GPUs haven’t been competitive for Bitcoin mining for close to a decade. Custom made ASICs were developed for the sole purpose of mining Bitcoin and made GPUs too inefficient by comparison to be profitable. Bitcoin is set up so that the difficulty of mining is adjusted every approximately 2 weeks, and less efficient methods eventually cost more in electricity than the value of mined coins.

Other cryptos use algorithms that were specifically designed to be resistant to ASICs, and GPUs are still the best way to mine those. There were even cryptos designed to be GPUs resistant and could only be mined with CPUs.

Of the GPU cryptos, ether is by far the largest, but it will shift to proof of stake, and once that happens, there won’t be any more mining of eth.

From what I’ve read, 60 to 70% of natural gas use in Finland is from Russian sources, however, it only accounts for about 5% of Finland’s total energy consumption. Apparently, it’s mostly used for industrial purposes. I did read awhile ago that Finland said it was prepared for such an eventuality.

It’s not a currency — it doesn’t matter how often they use that term to describe it. It’s an imaginary asset (like a unicorn) that you can “trade” for items of real value. Very different from gold which is a tangible asset that has been used for millennia as a medium of exchange, but which is also not a currency. Crypto is not backed by anything except the words of grifters and conmen.

It’s not untraceable. You can find out who bought any token, and who converted it to cash. There are mixers that randomly exchange “coins” to hide that while potentially tying the purchaser to worse crimes, but governments are cracking down on them now.

I hope this is normal pricing and not just a sale. I cannot afford or justify paying for these right now, but after I’m working again I’d really like to get both of those at some point.

Those prices have actually been in place for some time. I’d used Matlab at work and for a while, I kept checking in case they ever discounted it from those prices so I could have a copy at home. I didn’t have a purpose for them except to play around with them and they were a bit too expensive for just that. Matlab also offers their toolbox packages for $75 so they can add up pretty quickly if you want 2 or more. Both are pretty powerful tools but have steep learning curves.

As I’ve mentioned before, when my niece’s household all came down with COVID in January, her husband kept testing negative even though he felt ill for days — it was only when he finally got a PCR test that the results were positive.

“the entire market of fake digital money could go to zero”…

Sure, but my guess is that both Bitcoin and Ether survive.

Ether is actually much more interesting of the two. Blockchain contracts enable fair resolution of arbitrary arrangements without a central authority. Right now it’s used for things like sports or political outcome betting, but could theoretically be used for any number of things. There are many areas where entity X gets a significant cut of the pie just to facilitate a transaction; blockchain contracts can cut out that middle man.

Bitcoin, on the other hand, has too many true believers behind it to die out anytime soon. Bitcoin maximalists view other coins with the same disdain as followers of militant monotheistic faiths view other religions. It is a cult/religion in many aspects; those don’t die out regardless of how many of their prophesies fail.

“No teacher, school employee, or other presenter shall cover the topics of sexual orientation or gender identity in any classroom discussion or instruction in kindergarten through grade eight,” the measure, which was introduced by Republican Rep. The bill explicitly states that all staff members, including teachers, are barred from discussing their own gender identity and sexual orientation with students at all grade levels.

You can say the same about most of the world’s ‘real currencies’ as well. Bitcoin was an interesting idea, and not a Ponzi scheme or anything like that. It didn’t live up to its promises, but at least the originators had lofty/noble ideas (IMHO). The vast majority of coins since then have been outright scammy pump and dumps, and and will eventually disappear.

Aside from necessities, everything has an arbitrary value based on what people agree the value is.

Interesting article, I’ll have to watch for follow-up — they think they’ve found the cause for SIDS.

One of my early memories is going to the funeral of a little cousin when I was six. I remember the baby looked to me like a little doll, with a small American and Japanese flag in each hand because my uncle had married a Japanese girl when he was stationed there during the Korean War. This was in 1962; my mom told me years later that it had been difficult to find a cemetery that would bury her, because of the ‘mixed blood.’ Imagine that hellish search at the point where you’ve lost a 4-month-old baby to crib death.

One can hope this discovery leads to ways of identifying the babies at risk, so parents can do something effective in future — and stop blaming themselves for what they did or didn’t do in the past.

Just asking questions.
