Contrast the Uvalde video with the behavior of four men, Austin police officers Houston McCoy, Ramiro Martinez, and Jerry Day, and civilian Ray Crum, who made their way to the observation deck of the University of Texas Tower and killed mass shooter Charles Whitman on August 1, 1966.
Martinez, Crum, and Day searched the 27th floor, where they found M. J. Gabour [member of a family that had been trapped in the tower]; Day removed him. As they started up to the stairs to the observation deck, Crum asked “Are we playing for keeps?”, Martinez responded, “You’re damn right we’re playing for keeps”, to which Crum replied, “Well you better deputize me”.
Beneath the stairwell leading to the reception area, Martinez found Marguerite Lamport, Mark Gabour, Mary Gabour, and Mike Gabour. Mike Gabour gestured to the observation deck, saying: “He’s out there”.[
Martinez reached the observation deck first. He told Crum to remain at the door. McCoy and Day reached the observation deck a few minutes later. At some point, Crum accidentally fired his rifle.
Around 1:24 pm, while Whitman was looking south for the source of the rifle shot, Martinez and McCoy rounded the northeastern corner of the observation deck. Martinez jumped out and fired in the direction of Whitman, missing with all of his revolver shots. McCoy leaped out while Martinez was firing and saw Whitman’s head looking over the light ballast, McCoy fired at the top of the ballast, hitting Whitman between the eyes with several pellets, killing Whitman instantly. McCoy fired again, hitting Whitman on his left side.

Almost as if a raped 10 year old has a right to privacy.
But the thought of a ten-year-old being forced to carry a rapist’s baby will be overshadowed by the Bombshell that she was raped by an illegal immigrant, thus proving everything that Trump said about those thugs and rapists they are sending us…
God works in mysterious ways, Fox in very predictable ways.
This Ohio tragedy is, among many other things, a lesson that there is no account deemed sympathetic enough to break through to people who simply do not care about the suffering they’re causing. Instead we get denial, misdirection, or attacking those who told the story.

Arizona is bending over backwards to overtake Texas for being the Most Embarrassingly Backward State in the Union:
We don’t need no education: Now Arizona says teachers don’t require college degrees
Last week, just days after the Arizona legislature passed the most expansive school voucher law anywhere in the nation, Gov. Doug Ducey signed into law another education measure decreeing that public school teachers are no longer required to have a college degree of any kind before being hired
Opponents of the bill, however, point to the fact that Arizona has the lowest teacher salaries in the country, even while boasting a budget surplus of more than $5 billion.

OK, just to be very clear, I am generally not a fan of Nancy and David French. Their conservatism annoys the **** out of me. I find them willingly naive about what anti-abortion people like them are “going to do to help women after 50 years of not doing a damned thing.
That said, they have done lots of work in trying to hold a big Christian camp operator to account for years, nay, decades of sexual abuse mostly perpetrated by a protected employee. This thread is about a guy who just found out that his abuser went to prison several years ago—as in Kanakuk Kamps made no effort to notify victims of Pete Newman’s abuse of what was going on. Newman was a super popular @Kanakuk counselor.
But in ‘99, parents began complaining to CEO Joe White Newman had been nude w/ their sons in various activities & had 1-on-1 sleepovers.
Yet, @Kanakuk ignored complaints, promoted him, and used him in camp materials like: /2 pic.twitter.com/mkEpQ3xKXK— Nancy French (@NancyAFrench) July 14, 2022

Pretty interesting read on the making of the movie Deliverance.
‘It seems to me that I am the bearer of some kind of immortal message to humankind.’ That was what the author James L. Dickey wrote in his diary during the filming of Deliverance.
A rangy, brawling poet from the American deep south, Dickey was drunk a lot of the time, so anything he said should be taken with a pinch of salt. Indeed, the story goes that he liked to wander around muttering: ‘Oh, I’m so big! I’m so damned big!’
He was, at least, telling the truth both literally (he was 6 ft 3 in) and metaphorically. Deliverance, which was based on the writer’s 1970 bestselling debut novel, really was big — despite or because of the scandal it provoked.
That took an unexpectedly long time. My 4 and 5 counts are starting to stack up.

This is part of an old but very interesting Twitter thread describing the phenomenon known as the “Shirley Exception”, so coined because everyday rank-and-file conservatives such as my folks - who may otherwise present as decent and upstanding people - support odious and heinous policies because, “Surely the Good Guys (tm) who enforce the law will exercise compassion and mercy and make exceptions for the people who deserve it!”
…because in their mind the exact law being prescribed is just a tool in the chest, an option on the table, which they expect to be wielded fairly and judiciously. Surely no one would do anything so unreasonable as actually enforcing it as written! Not when that would be bad!

As I was about to ask the same question I believe we can assume “wonky”
Any girl under the age of consent that is impregnated was raped.
This isn’t hard to understand. Every state has age of consent laws - if you engage in sexual conduct with a child under the age of consent, you are raping that child.
A child who is pregnant at age 10 or 11 or 12 or 13 (or up to 18 in most states). That’s right - in some states, a girl who is impregnated at 18 is considered statutorily raped unless the person raping them was in a state where there’s an exception for an assailant who was within a few years of age of the child who was raped (say the rapist was 16 and the victim was 15 and the age of consent is 17.
This is a whole lot more common than the forced birth extremists want to admit (but will be more than happy to lie about endlessly, just as they do about infanticide - where a fetus is born alive and no doctor is going to kill that child because that’d be actual murder).

I mean, I’ll argue with you on this one. (Not a hill to die on, though.) There are an awful lot of people who, when pressed, will absolutely say, “I trust the officials God put in charge of us to use their spiritual discretion to enforce the law justly.” It goes back to the fetishization of authority that these people engage in; because all properly appointed authority is explicitly approved by God, it necessarily follows that they believe authorities should act in a Godly manner at all times, e.g. with compassion, kindness, and mercy. It’s why they look the other way when the cruelty of the Border Patrol is brought to light; they don’t want to admit that people in authority don’t always act in good Christian faith. It threatens their worldview that duly elected leaders and their appointed subordinates are God’s agents on earth.

That plane was costing Trump dearly to fly, because it’s ancient and needed significant repairs. He owns it, as opposed to renting it, but the cost to fly per hour is $20k. Of course he got others to pay for it.
re: #46 Dopamine Fish
I also put a little bit of emphasis on “properly appointed” and “duly elected” because we get into a bit of cognitive dissonance when we look at the way these Christian folk treat Joe Biden; but that disappears when cast through the prism of the Big Lie. If they believe that Biden and the Democratic majority were not duly elected, but are illegitimate, then they are free to decry Biden without running afoul of their reverence for elected authority.

remember yesterday “trump’s gonna blame it all on meadows and the lawyers’ like a manipulated stooge…
well
Donald Ayer, Stuart Gerson, and Dennis Aftergut writing in The Atlantic:
“After seven hearings held by the January 6 committee thus far this summer, doubts as to who is responsible have been resolved. The evidence is now overwhelming that Donald Trump was the driving force behind a massive criminal conspiracy to interfere with the official January 6 congressional proceeding and to defraud the United States of a fair election outcome.”
“The evidence is clearer and more robust than we as former federal prosecutors—two of us as Department of Justice officials in Republican administrations—thought possible before the hearings began. Trump was not just a willing beneficiary of a complex plot in which others played most of the primary roles. While in office, he himself was the principal actor in nearly all of its phases, personally executing key parts of most of its elements and aware of or involved in its worst features, including the use of violence on Capitol Hill. Most remarkably, he did so over vehement objections raised at every turn, even by his sycophantic and loyal handpicked team. This was Trump’s project all along.”
So, I just read that Lauren Boebert’s now-defunct bar and gun-hump-a-torium is located in a town apparently named Rifle, CO.

Not particularly unusual at all. Those regular viewers watching a series or film are a self-selected audience, interested in that storyline; rather like the way Dinesh films or Ayn Rand films will have high audience ratings and yet be detested by serious critics or anyone with a brain. I mentioned this before but years ago some girl friends and I attended a film (name I don’t recall) that we loved and the critics hated, because we were the target audience — it was a romantic comedy for older women; no one else would enjoy it.

Lots of companies need EV batteries now. Good to see Panasonic getting in on the game - they’ll probably reduce the size and increase the capacity of batteries in the process.

I checked out De Soto, KS on Wikipedia, and note that it is not QUITE the complete boondocks: it’s on the edge of the Kansas City Metro area, and the proposed Panasonic plant is the location of an old Army ammunition factory, so provided with its own rail connections. The Virginia law that the Lovings violated in the famous Loving v Virginia case:
From wiki:
The Lovings were charged under Section 20-58 of the Virginia Code, which prohibited interracial couples from being married out of state and then returning to Virginia, and Section 20-59, which classified miscegenation as a felony, punishable by a prison sentence of between one and five years.[16]
On January 6, 1959, the Lovings pled guilty to “cohabiting as man and wife, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth”. They were sentenced to one year in prison, with the sentence suspended on condition that the couple leave Virginia and not return together for at least 25 years. After their conviction, the couple moved to the District of Columbia.[17]
There is every reason to believe that the Nazi states of America may very well pass analogous laws in their efforts to restrict abortion. If they do, I wonder the impact on the universities in the state.

They will absolutely. States will start applying criminal penalties to women to keep them from getting abortions. I expect some red state will pass a law declaring a fetus a person from the moment of conception, and make it a felony to traffic an unborn person across state lines for the purpose of terminating its life. They will issue warrants for abortion doctors in blue states, and those doctors will have to be very careful about where they travel in the United States. Bounty hunters will stalk them, looking for an opportunity to arrest them if they travel to a state they could be extradited from. They could face capital murder charges, as could anyone who assists a woman in obtaining an abortion. Pregnant children will be taken from their parents to make sure that their rapists’ baby is carried to term. Women will die because doctors will be afraid to provide them medical care.

Most universities aren’t facing a dearth of qualified students, but our Illinois Universities (and those in some other northern states) could advertise by promoting the notion that “well, yes, you could freeze to death in winter (but that is true in Texas too!) but we aren’t going to interfere with decisions you make about your body! Come to Illinois and stay in a state that believes women are equal citizens with rights.” That will remain true until SCOTUS decides to outlaw abortion everywhere or the American public is sufficiently stupid (or GOP disenfranchisement is sufficiently widespread) to elect GOP candidates to pass laws that will ban abortion nationwide.

And then you can have the fight in Battle Creek.
From an article in the NY Times:
Last month, Gov. Charlie Baker of Massachusetts went further. He said that the state might “encourage” companies in places that have severely curtailed reproductive rights to relocate to Massachusetts, where access to abortion is readily available. The laws protecting reproductive freedom, in fact, are some of the strongest in the country. Should certain businesses take him up on his offer, they would presumably bring their employees with them.
The danger is not just that Austin, or Nashville, or Lawton, Okla., won’t attract certain people; it is also that others will simply choose to leave those places behind. As one concerned friend in Alabama put it to me last week, the threat of the “brain drain is real.” The likelihood of superstar cities like New York and Boston only digging deeper into talent hoarding is just as problematic.
Charlie Baker is an example of a red governor in a blue state that does take rights seriously; Youngkin is an example of a red governor in a bluish state that is working to turn the state red.

ANTIOCH, Calif. (KGO) — Investors fear they may have been conned out of hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars from a high-stakes deal introduced to them by attractive women.
The Federal Trade Commission says it’s seen an uptick of complaints involving romance and cryptocurrency.
Kevin Sam, of Antioch, met a woman online in February who reached out suddenly via a direct message.
“She was very kind. Still to this day, she’s kind of empathetic,” Sam told 7 On Your Side.
He says their online relationship grew, but they still have not met in person.
Sam remembers her mentioning an investment opportunity in cryptocurrency on Feb. 10.
“Open the wallet and enter the mining pool,” she wrote, urging Sam to invest with the site called defi-base.com.
He did just that and he says it immediately paid off.
“Originally, it started at $2,000. Then it went up to $5,000 almost a week later,” he said.
So he invested more money.
“At $50,000, I was making $1,000 a day,” said Sam.
He even borrowed $100,000 for his mother to invest.
But he says when he tried to cash out on some of his investments, he ran into problems.
“You are participating in the 7-day 100,000 USDT gift on the mining pool. Cannot withdraw during the pledge period,” the company told him.

Earlier this month, Google sent a request to the Federal Election Commission seeking an advisory opinion on the potential launch of a pilot program that would allow political committees to bypass spam filters and instead deliver political emails to the primary inboxes of Gmail users. During a public commenting period that’s still ongoing, most people commenting have expressed staunch opposition for various reasons that they’re hoping the FEC will consider.“Hard pass,” wrote a commenter called Katie H. “Please do not allow Google to open up Pandora’s Box on the people by allowing campaign/political emails to bypass spam filters.”
Out of 48 comments submitted as of July 11, only two commenters voiced support for Google’s pilot program, which seeks to deliver more unsolicited political emails to Gmail users instead of marking them as spam. The rest of the commenters opposed the program, raising a range of concerns, including the potential for the policy to degrade user experience, introduce security risks, and even possibly unfairly influence future elections.
Business Insider reported that the period for public commenting ends on Saturday, July 16, which is longer than what was shared in conflicting reports that said the initial deadline to comment was July 11. That means there’s still time for more Gmail users and interested parties to chime in.

Most voters are not so attuned to politics; McAuliffe makes one mistake in a debate and turns off voters while Youngkin campaigns as a moderate concealing his real objectives. When the Democrats attempt to point out the dangers of electing someone like Youngkin, they are not taken seriously and their ads are dismissed as just being normal politics. The problem is I’m not sure how many companies will seriously consider leaving their low-tax, low regulation red states for higher tax, stronger regulation blue states.
In the long term, the blue state is the better option, but remember: Corps are about maximizing profits. Setting up shop in Red states where they can keep more of their money lets them do that.

You tried to spin up a conspiracy theory about the rape of a child & contributed to her suffering. Perhaps now is not the time to get on a high horse.

I’m really bothered by the insistence that an arrest is how to verify the truth of sexual assaults. Do they know nothing?

Because you aired your “skepticism” publicly in a manner clearly designed to drive wider discourse in an afactual direction and, having been proven wrong, are continuing to pretend your actions were in good faith.

re: #188 Crush White Nationalism
Bingo. Keep your skepticism to yourself. IF you can prove the story, you publish.
Weird how all of these people are skeptical about the rape of a 10 year old, but gladly reprint the pressers of LEOs when reporting on officer involved shootings, mass shootings, etc., and it turns out that the cops openly lied, engaged in evidence tampering, withheld evidence, or other malfeasance that was caught on video.
Perhaps these media gatekeepers should take their skepticism and apply it where it belongs …
Liz is skeptical about stories with a single source, but anonymous “sources close to” whoever stories are just fine.
Got it

Yes, journalists should be skeptical. Skepticism leads to more investigation. This is journalism 101. But it’s so much easier to jump on the twitter bandwagon and get those tasty, tasty clicks.
I hate this timeline where very lazy and unserious people have huge platforms and paychecks to match. It’s bad enough that we live in a feral capitalist economy that makes life difficult for millions but the shallowness of society is soul crushing.

Not to mention they immediately release the names of alleged suspects and send the mobs after them.
re: #143 Dangerman
this is the point
to instill fear
to cause chaos, costs, threats etcit’s not about being right
its not about how to reasonably interpret a purposefully ambiguous lawfor most professionals, it’s about not being sued/charged/investigated in the first place
taking a principled stance can be costly and dangerous - these days professionally, and personally.
in this case, the doc is probably on solid ground, but who needs it…?

Also, Liz Wolfe, wouldn’t a “journalist” try to find the answers to these questions before pontificating?

How would Warren have the legal authority to do so? How would such misinformation be defined? Wouldn’t an FTC, empowered by Warren to crack down on abortion-related misinformation, just be used as a political weapon, wielded by whichever party is in power? https://t.co/6bg2PbXqyT

Do you understand that CPC is a scam from our theocratic-right meant to lure pregnant women in and harass them? I’d think everyone but our theocratic authoritarians could all agree that they are firmly in the misinformation camp.
