Italian Composer/Pianist Ludovico Einaudi: Tiny Desk Concert

Ludovico Einaudi was on a North American tour, playing before audiences in the thousands, when he stopped by the NPR office to play a far more intimate setting: a Tiny Desk set. It’s the first tour for the Italian pianist and composer since the beginning of the pandemic, following the release of his 2022 album, Underwater. It’s an album that captures how many have felt in the pandemic — feeling underwater, or trapped in another world.

It’s that relatable feeling — like we’re treading water trying to remain above the surface, powering through the adversity of the last two years — that makes Einaudi’s music so emotional and reflective. The pulsating strings of the opening song to his Tiny Desk concert, the track “Experience” from his 2013 album In A Time Lapse, demand attention, captivating the audience. The fact that the song recently went viral due to a TikTok trend only proves how welcoming Einaudi’s music is — and why he is the most-streamed classical pianist of all time.

Ludovico Einaudi’s presence at the piano keeps you waiting for more. His fingers glide over the keys effortlessly, but he never seems rushed. As he plays, his eyes are closed. And in this concert, you can tell his music moves him as much as it does his audience.

As the Washington Post reporter Carol Leonnig, the foremost chronicler of the contemporary Secret Service, has written, “The Secret Service’s claim of being politically independent … was tested by Trump’s tenure in the White House.” In one major example, a high-ranking Secret Service official, Tony Ornato, made a deeply unusual move from a civil-service job to being deputy White House chief of staff.

I know I said I was going to shut up about Biden but jesus fucking christ. They finally admitted Biden WAS going to nominate that extreme anti-abortion judge in Kentucky, but he’s abandoning it now - NOT because of opposition from Democrats, but because Rand Paul opposed it.

And Mitch McConnell says there was never any deal with Biden - that Biden was going to appoint this judge as “a personal friendship gesture.”

Someone needs to tell Biden that Senate cloakroom BS doesn’t fly in this current age of partisan politics.

And that the POTUS can’t do that sort of deal since there is a total lack of transparency. It will leak. And then he looks bad since it seems that he considers opposition members people to heed rather than his own.

“Blunt force trauma to the torso” is something that would happen only if the person was hurled WITH BLUNT FORCE down a flight of stairs. Someone who tripped by accident might break a wrist or an ankle.

Maybe she doubled over the railing as she fell? That could bang up a torso.

Sigh. We’ve been over this. Biden was going to do this. Rand Paul fucked it up. McConnell was clearly planning on reneging on whatever deal Biden thought he had made. The sun sets, the sun rises.

Joe Sonka’s original story was solid with a quote from Rep Yarmuth. Followup story had quotes from Gov Beshear and others.

The governor was even on record as recently as a few days ago, I seem to recall, with the office stating that every time they talked to the president, they asked him about the status of this nomination. It was absolutely a thing that was happening, until it wasn’t. And yet, I suspect the administration will learn nothing from McConnell’s “I promised nothing” attitude to the supposed deal.

re: #41 Dopamine Fish

This demonstrates the problem that settled political systems like that of the States have when dealing with revolutionary powers like the GOP. By revolutionary I mean like the Jacobins or the Bolsheviks. It is their stated intention to burn the current system down.

The people who have received their power through the settled system simply cannot understand this. They think the revolutionaries are playing the game as it has always been played. If the revolutionaries make absurd claims the settled people think it’s just an opening move. They think the revolutionaries will bargain away from their original position. That there will be compromise.

But as Henry Kissinger noted in his Ph.D. thesis, “They (the revolutionaries) are willing, indeed eager, to push their logic to its ultimate conclusion.”

Biden seems like a nice guy but he ia way out his depth when dealing with revolutionaries like the GOP.

He’s been a Washington insider for most of his life. The fact that he’s making under-the-table deals with Mitch McConnell as a “friendship gesture,” despite the last fucking 20 years or so, tells you everything.

He still called them his “Republican friends” even in his speech about the destruction of Roe v Wade. They ARE his friends. This kind of stuff is why I didn’t vote for him in the primary, tbh, because I knew we were in a new reality and that old shit wasn’t gonna play any more. And it’s becoming a real problem, because people are noticing it more and more.

Biden Had No Israeli Flag on Limousine
“President Joe Biden’s motorcade no longer had Israeli flags on it during a visit to a Palestinian hospital in east Jerusalem on Friday, despite his assurances that the stop is not a statement about Israeli sovereignty in its capital city,” the Jerusalem Post reports.

“That rejection was seen by many in Israel as signaling that he does not recognize Israeli sovereignty in that part of the city.”

I linked to Olivia Nuzzi’s incredible interview with Donald Trump yesterday but it’s worth pausing to admire her lede:

“Donald Trump was impeached twice, lost the 2020 election by 7,052,770 votes, is entangled in investigations by federal prosecutors (over the Capitol insurrection and over the mishandling of classified White House documents and over election interference) and the District of Columbia attorney general (over financial fraud at the Presidential Inaugural Committee) and the Manhattan district attorney (over financial fraud at the Trump Organization) and the New York State attorney general (over financial fraud at the Trump Organization) and the Westchester County district attorney (over financial fraud at the Trump Organization) and the Fulton County, Georgia, district attorney (over criminal election interference in Georgia) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (over rules violations in plans to take his social-media company public through a SPAC) and the House Select Committee on January 6 (whose hearings are the runaway TV-ratings hit of the summer), yet on Monday, July 11, he was in a fantastic mood.”

She believes that Trump may have been concerned that Ivana either was scheduled for a deposition or may have been able to refute claims he would make during his testimony. After all, she could very well have been aware of shortcuts that Trump took to evade rules. Trump certainly has associates who are capable of making the appropriate arrangements for such a demise.

My admittedly pessimistic view is that Putin will continue this until he wins. Or at least until he is dead.

There is no way he can back out without losing so much face that he will be in danger around the other nationalistic fanatics in his circle.

This is something I think people here in the west overlook. So many seem to think Putin is acting alone. But he could not carry out what he is doing if he did not have support from at least some notable fraction of the Russian population, enough so that his inner circle who carries out his wishes feel comfortable doing his bidding.

We humans want to blame someone so we blame the person on top. Yes, that is a person to blame.

But as with all the other atrocities of modern warfare, there is an entire apparatus which is fine with doing the actual work of the dictates from the top.

This was true of Stalin, for example. He’s just one guy, but the red army had already committed enough atrocities that they didn’t need more help. Stalin gave them direction.

Here is where I get really dark: there is no way out of this for Ukraine unless we significantly up the cost to Putin for his aggression.

A few Ukrainian commandos blowing up the miscellaneous stockpile of weapons and supplies in Russia is not enough. It hasn’t been enough so far.

So what to do next?

Should we encourage Ukraine to capitulate, to go to the negotiating table and give up the eastern third of their country?

Or are we just going to wait this out until Ukraine becomes so exhausted that they sue for peace?

Or, do we arm them to take the war into Russia itself?

These are the kinds of questions that Wilson and FDR had to ask themselves in the early 20th century.

I’m confident that the Ukrainians can put up a fight for quite a while.

But history tells me that Ukraine has always been vulnerable to their larger neighbor.

Back in WWI, the central powers, namely Germany, tried to secure Ukraine as an independent country from Russia. They failed.

It was late in the war and the Germans were already exhausted and the Austro-Hungarian empire was almost kaput, but still, the Germans tried.

I just read a couple articles that reported a friend of Ivana’s said she recently had hip problems that limited her mobility. This would certainly affect her ability to navigate stairs. I moved into a ranch home in 2009 because, based on my experience during both my husband’s illness and then later my own illness, that as we age it is far safer to live on a single level. But when you live in a home for many years, it can be difficult to leave it, even for health reasons. Many of us don’t want to accept the restrictions that declining physical strength and agility impose on us.

Italy has been collapsing since the end of WWII, and it’s sometimes been much worse than this, but it manages to totter along somehow. (Government has already “fallen” because a coalition member has backed out — in a parliamentary system, this means new elections, not collapse.)

Listen carefully to the talking head CBS brought in.

He points out that the problem is both the left-wing populist party and the right-wing populist party keep squabbling over financial/spending, but they are united in wanting to up-end the government.

And… they are pro-Putin.

So this is why the Italian President rejected the resignation from the Prime Minister, because said President wants to prioritize stability in light of the Ukraine crisis.

Matt Gaetz: LGBTQ+ Folks Should Oppose Abortion So They Can Adopt Kids [Yahoo! News]

During a U.S. House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday on the impact of overturning Roe v. Wade, Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz made the bizarre argument that the availability of abortion makes it harder for LGBTQ+ people to become parents.
The Human Rights Campaign’s legal director, Sarah Warbelow, was testifying about the threat to individual rights because of the recent Supreme Court decision and others that may follow, as conservatives have targeted marriage equality, contraception, and more.
Gaetz, who has never shown any support for LGBTQ+ people before (he has a zero rating from HRC), said to Warbelow, “I worry that if the LGBTQ community and advocacy organizations for same-sex couples somehow reorient to be a pro-abortion enterprise, that could actually result in fewer same-sex couples having access to the family formation that gives them fulfilled lives. Are you concerned about that?”
“What I would be concerned about is forcing women to carry a pregnancy simply to satisfy another couple’s desire to have a child,” Warbelow replied. She pointed out that LGBTQ+ people form families in many ways, through assisted reproduction as well as adoption.

There were over 23,000 kids in the foster care system of FL at the end of last year. I don’t think the state is in any danger of running out of kids to adopt if LGBTQ+ folks continue to have access to abortion. Especially when two-faced shitheels like Gaetz will readily support evangelical fanatics screaming that being anywhere near someone who isn’t white, straight, and male will lead them down a path of eternal sin and damnation.

There’s approximately half a million kids in foster care nationwide. 3/4 of them are temporaries (parents are in prison, or court-ordered rehab, or a mental hospital), the parental rights still exist for when they’re capable again.

But 1/4 of the kids in foster care are available for adoption — either orphans, or their parents’ rights have been permanently nullified.

The forced-birthers aren’t interested in those kids. Because they’re not healthy babies. They’re older, or special-needs, or they’ve been abused and abandoned so many times they’ve got emotional issues and need more nurturing than right-wingers are capable of.

And they more often that not end up in abusive foster and other homes, and are traumatized even further. And that is the system into which they wish to pump more forced-birth children… It makes my blood boil.

Nebraska Sen. Sasse tests positive for COVID-19 (WOWT-TV, Omaha, Nebr.)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WOWT) - Sen. Ben Sasse announced Thursday that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

A spokesperson for the Republican senator from Nebraska says he tested positive on Wednesday after returning from a trip to the Ukrainian border. He also attended a special Nebraska delegation breakfast Wednesday morning welcoming newly sworn-in Congressman Mike Flood.

Sasse is vaccinated and boosted, and is experiencing only mild symptoms. He plans to isolate and work remotely for the recommended five days.

He joins a growing list of senators who have recently tested positive, including Sens. Chuck Schumer and Richard Blumenthal.

Medical examiner: Jayland Walker was shot dozens of times (Associated Press, July 16, 2022)

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Jayland Walker, the 25-year-old Black man who died last month at the hands of police in Akron, Ohio, was shot dozens of times, with 26 bullets recovered from his body, according to a preliminary autopsy report released Friday.

Dr. Lisa Kohler, the Summit County medical examiner, said it was impossible for her office to say which bullet killed Walker or the number of shots that were fired.

Walker “had several very devastating injuries that would cause death,” including injuries to his heart, lungs and arteries, Kohler said. She tallied 41 entry wounds and five wounds from bullets that grazed Walker.

Preliminary findings released earlier indicated Walker’s body had more than 60 wounds. Greta Johnson, Summit County communications director, said Friday it was “very possible” that one bullet could cause multiple entrance wounds, such as by passing through Walker’s arm and into his torso.

Walker had five wounds in his back, but it’s impossible to say whether those came as he ran away or turned as he was being shot, Kohler said.

How does U.S. life expectancy compare to other countries?

What is so noticeable is that life expectancy for black Americans is so much lower than for other other Americans.

But it is also stark in fact that per $ spent per capita on healthcare we are doing very poorly wrt life expectancy.

So it seems another Italian government is going to fall. From what I gather via stories online, the major problems are that the cost of living is going up faster than incomes.

Not surprising, but yet again this shows how fragile some places are in light of inflation.

Italy was rocked by the pandemic and again that shows that a society which is just eeking by is vulnerable to be pushed over by any black swan.

We arm the Ukrainians to the teeth and provide the support they need to expel Russia military forces from Ukrainian territory.

If it were up to me (like if I were POTUS), that would include air support and a “shock and awe” aerial bombardment campaign against all Russian military positions in Ukraine.

The goal being thusly: Russia would have a hard time invading a goddamn shopping mall by the time we’re done with them. Settle their hash once and for all. A decisive military defeat would, most likely, be sufficient to lead to regime change in Russia.

No one is a position to replace Putin. So I figure a good old-fashioned, knock-down, drag-out fight for the keys to the Kremlin will resolve that issue. Most likely, someone from what’s left of their shattered military would take over.

Yes, I know, it’d be chaos. But this is a chance to neutralize a major geopolitical threat. And it’d have the side effect of sending a clear warning to Beijing as well.

Of course, we could wind up with someone even more evil…but yes, we need to make all efforts to contain the evil that exists.

Despite the best efforts of the Putinverstehers and others who simply tolerate him, there is no argument at all to justify Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

And although one can make a case of Russia having a historical claim to Crimea, the way they exerted that claim was unconscionable, and letting them get away with it only encouraged their more recent actions.

Exactly. Russia could’ve pursued their claim to Crimea in a diplomatic and civilized manner but they settled on a solution by force, taking advantage of the chaotic situation in Ukraine in 2014. As far as I’m concerned, they’ve squandered any right to make a claim to the Crimean Peninsula after pulling that stunt. Nonetheless, that’s between Russia and Ukraine to settle between themselves.

Yes, letting the Russians get away with their little Anschluss of Crimea was a disastrous mistake on our part, and it sent the message to Putin that he could do as he pleased and no one would so much as raise their voice. In retrospect, that was a massive blunder and a diplomatic fiasco on the part of the Western world.

A history of falls is associated with increased risk. Age: the incidence of falls increases with age. Gender: for the younger old, fall rates for men and women are similar, but among the older old, women fall more often than men, and are far more likely to incur fractures when they fall.

The risk of injury when an elderly woman falls is very high. Without evidence, conspiracy-mongering doesn’t look any better than a common Republican.

Putin is not going to use nuclear weapons. It’s a hollow threat. And no one, not even me, is talking about conquering Russian territory. The entire focus of a military campaign would simply be the expulsion of all Russian military forces from the territory of Ukraine. If Russia’s military is utterly decimated in the process, well…..that’s a happy little accident, isn’t it?

As far as the PRC is concerned, China is having its own problems right now and they have more than enough on their plate. And if they get to watch an epic curbstomping of Russia on live TV….they’ll think twice before committing to any precipitous military campaigns.

re: #137 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

We are not going to war inside Russia itself. That would effectively be the u.s. in a one man war because the eu is completely hollowed out as far as the military goes. We barely have enough equipment to supply Ukraine and it’s been 50 years since we had the industrial capacity to put ourselves on a wwii style war footing.

Mob of conservative mothers demand library burn Pride display books (LGBTQ Nation)

Only one of the mothers filed a formal complaint about the books, but instead of her name she wrote that she was a “Christian taxpayer.”

(Those other Christians, and the icky gay people, and those people who aren’t Christians, they don’t pay taxes apparently.)

In the Connecticut hometown of Revolutionary War hero Nathan Hale, a group of mothers including a “Christian taxpayer” is up in arms over the town library’s Pride book display and are demanding the offending materials be burned.

Booth & Dimock Memorial Library Director Margaret Khan said the incident happened June 22, when one of the mothers removed the books from the display and the group carried them to the front desk to complain.

Khan said the women responded with “hateful language” and told her the books in the display should be burned.

According to Khan, the library’s collection is evaluated based on specific criteria, including relevance and representation, and materials are evaluated by respected sources, including Library Journal and The New York Times Book Review, according to the Journal Inquirer.

For Lizards who are fans of unsolved mysteries, here’s one that’s just been cleared up:

A girl who was dubbed Princess Doe after her remains were found 40 years ago in a New Jersey cemetery has been identified as a Long Island teenager, authorities announced Friday.

Charges have been filed against the man they believe killed Dawn Olanick, 17, of West Babylon, New York, the Warren County, New Jersey, prosecutor’s office announced. The suspect, Arthur Kinlaw, 68, is currently serving 20 years to life in Sullivan County, New York, on two first-degree murder convictions.

Kinlaw tried to lure Olanick into prostitution and killed her after she refused, authorities said, according to Lehigh Valley Live. Her remains were found July 25, 1982, in Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Blairstown, in northwestern New Jersey near the Pennsylvania border. Authorities have said she was beaten beyond recognition.

Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA42) has a problem. He’s been super anti-LGBT+ for decades. Unfortunately for him, in redistricting Palm Springs was added to his district, and he’s facing an openly-gay Democratic challenger now: Will Rollins, a former federal prosecutor.

‘A real twist’: GOP congressman with anti-LGBTQ past tries to win over gay Palm Springs voters (Los Angeles Times)

CA-42 went from “Safe Republican” to “Even” with the redistricting.

Ken Calvert has held on to his seat in Congress for 30 years, in part by opposing gay rights. Now that he’s running for reelection against a gay rival in a district that includes one of the largest concentrations of LGBTQ voters in America, Calvert says his views have changed.

Despite his previous opposition, the Republican says, he believes the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage across the nation should not be overturned.

“It wasn’t always my position,” Calvert said. “It’s a different country than it was 30 years ago.”

Whether it’s principle or opportunism, Calvert’s change of heart seems a necessary shift in a race that has grown far more competitive as a result of the redrawing of California’s congressional boundaries.

The rental company gave us a Toyota Corolla for the duration, which is fine for my wife. It turns out a Corolla is actually lower to the ground than a Smart, meaning the first time I got out of it I stumbled and struck my elbow against the door frame.

As for the Smart, the insurance adjuster went over to the repair shop to inspect the damage, and he called saying he was amazed at how well the car held up in such an accident with a large animal. The insurance company has authorised repair of our car, and the rental for as long as we need it.

They will only pay about 2/3 of the tow distance, because the shop is outside the mileage range of our policy.

I never knew much about the Smart car. I didn’t realize that it started as a stand-alone company. And, it is young.

Smartcar is not the same company as Smart. Smart is owned by Mercedes-Benz, and is a collaboration with Swatch (really). Smartcar is an Internet of Things company.

smartcar.com

Smartcar’s vehicle APIs enable you to verify mileage, manage EV charging, issue digital car keys, track fleets, and much more.

Extremely local news:

With my mother’s birthday coming up in a few days (she’ll be eighty-two and going strong), I popped a birthday card in the mail yesterday with photographs of what an 800# Smart car looks like after it tangles with a 500# elk. (She asked for photos.)

Out of morbid curiosity care to share? This is what my truck looked like after an idiot slammed into it last December. He didn’t scrape the ice off his windshield and was driving blind.

If it were up to me (like if I were POTUS), that would include air support and a “shock and awe” aerial bombardment campaign against all Russian military positions in Ukraine.

To do that you’d first have to take out the Russian air defence systems in Belarus and Russia itself.

That’s what you want? To attack the home territory of a nuclear armed state?

The US healthcare system is specifically designed to extract as much money as possible from a sick or injured person as possible before their eventual death. And that goes for the deceased’s family as well. They are often on the hook for all the expenses incurred. The Insurance industry is an important cog in this machine whose business model is to attempt to deny coverage whenever and wherever possible for any possible reason.

My sister and brother-in-law, good hard-working, home-owning middle-class Americans, wound up having to declare bankruptcy over medical bills after she contracted cancer and he suffered a traumatic head injury after a car accident.

Well, so far, their much-vaunted air defense system looks to be rather shit.

In any event, then we give the Ukrainians hardcore offensive weaponry, enough to eradicate Russian military forces on Ukrainian territory - and we keep on giving them that offensive weaponry until the Russians wake up at some point in the (hopefully not-too-distant) future to realize they’ve lost 150,000 of their troops to conquer next to nothing.

At the very least, give the Ukrainians some top-of-the-line air defense systems to neutralize the threat of the Russian Air Force. And then announce that Russia has been added to the State Department’s “state sponsors of terrorism” list and that the long-term goal of US foreign policy is regime change in Russia.

done and done. they’re getting the best we’ve got, unless you want to train them on, and then supply them with f 38’s. The issue isn’t that Biden is scared of Russia nuking anybody. It’s that he doesn’t want to give Russia the excuse to call for a full mobilization, as that would put several million Russians in Ukraine. It’s entirely possible the Ukrainians would use them for target practice, but in the meantime, the Ukrainians would also be losing several hundred soldiers a day. We’re trying to contain this so that Putin has a way, if he wants, to say “Okay, we’ve secured referendums in Donbas. Crimea is safe. We can leave now.”

No Western military commander would order their air forces into action against any air defence system “shit” or not without trying to suppress it.

And it clearly isn’t “shit”. The obsolete versions of it being operated by the Ukrainians have prevented the Russians gaining air superiority. The S400 systems in Russia and Belarus prevent the Ukrainians operating over the Donbas.

As for the rest, yes, that looks like the only way we’re going to get this done, fighting to the last Ukrainian. Things would have been so much better if we’d decided to put a few “speed bumps” on the ground in 2014 or 2021.

Who doesn’t live the smell of ethnic cleansing in the morning?

At the end of World War Two, the Czechoslovaks put the Beneš Decrees into effect. The Germans were (essentially) forcibly deported at the point of a bayonet back to Germany (and sporadically massacred, I should add). There were also forcible deportations in a good many other eastern European nations as well. Should the Ukrainians do that? Of course not. But the Russians living in the Donbas need to decide what’s it gonna be…are they Russian citizens? Or Ukrainian citizens?

Most likely however, if Russia were militarily defeated in Ukraine, it becomes a moot point.

The Russians living in the Donetsk Basin would most likely flee en masse to Russia. No force whatsoever would be required - they’d be too fearful of Ukrainian vengeance.

My paternal grandmother was from the Sudetenland, but she emigrated at the turn of the last century. Otherwise she would have been expelled with all the other ethnic Germans.

As I recall, most of the Russians in eastern Ukraine were settled there by Russia and given jobs in the heavy industry there as part of a conscious effort of Russification.

There’s still ghost villages here and there in the Sudetenland; if you’re out hiking in that region, you’ll run across them. They were never repopulated in many cases.

The Beneš Decrees are still part of Czech law - of course, they’re largely irrelevant now and they were rendered irrelevant when this country joined the EU. It only turns up in cases of property disputes.

Asking them to accept Ukraine as their country isn’t ethnic cleansing anymore than asking people living in France to accept France as a legitimate country.

“Referendums” in the Donetsk Basin? Fuck no. That is utterly unacceptable.

There is only one solution. Russia must leave, they will withdraw their military forces, they must renounce any and all territorial claims on Ukraine and they will pay reparations for the damage they’ve caused.

That’s it. As simple as that.

Russia must gain absolutely nothing from their misbegotten adventurism.

While I agree, in the end it is for Ukraine to decide on what terms they will reach peace with Russia, because its their country and they are the ones doing the fighting and dying. However, every indication is they are in near unanimous agreement that Russia must withdraw from every inch of Ukraine and pay reparations.

And as we can see from the immediate craven surrender of mostly Russian speaking and roughly 50% “Russian” ethnic Mariupol “those people” are untrustworthy and should be expelled.

re: #307 Dr Lizardo

I don’t know, but I wonder how many Russian speakers in the Donbas actually want to be ruled from Moscow, and to what extent the separatist movement was manufactured in the Kremlin. I have read they are being forcibly impressed into fighting in the war.

Not if they held French citizenship, were born in France, of parents who were born in France…

Prosecute people for acts, punish them.

But once again, to be clear, Lizardo was proposing expulsion of people from the place they’ve lived for generations for being who they were.

Or maybe letting them stay if they took a loyalty oath.

The Lost Cause rises again!

I cannot relate to anyone who wants to celebrate the Confederacy, meaning the elected officials and officers of the Confederacy or any of the claims made by the CSA.

Then again, how many people today glorify “Vikings” ?? While the stereotype is clearly not historical, the reality is the Migration Period did see a whole lot of invasion and warfare, and pillaging and raping. Why do people want to glorify that?

I have two direct ancestors who were on the winning side in the War of the Rebellion.

I don’t want to erect statues of them.

In my genealogy data base I record what they did. I recognize their names and know a tiny bit about them.

But I’m not running around putting up monuments to them. I think anyone with such an urge is frankly being a bit weird.

That becomes the question then. There are 2.7 million people on the Donbas region. As long as they say the region is part of Ukraine, I don’t think the government cares that they celebrate being Russian. But what are you going to do if say 10k, 100k, or 500k decide that they cannot accept being part of Ukraine, and feel they belong in Russia, and tend to help Russia with this goal.

The role of William Olson in advising the president in late 2020, which has not previously been disclosed, shows how fringe figures were influencing him at a critical time,” the New York Times reports.

“The involvement of a person like Mr. Olson, who now represents the conspiracy theorist and MyPillow chief executive Mike Lindell, underscores how the system that would normally insulate a president from rogue actors operating outside of official channels had broken down within weeks after the 2020 election.”

“That left Mr. Trump in direct contact with people who promoted conspiracy theories or questionable legal ideas, telling him not only what he wanted to hear, but also that they — not the public servants advising him — were the only ones he could trust.”

re: #332 John Hughes

The core of the issue is that a certain number of the folks living in the Donbas simply don’t want to be Ukrainian. As a matter of fact, they don’t want Ukraine to exist at all. They want Ukraine, or at the very least their little corner of it, to be directly annexed by Russia.

If/when Ukraine prevails in this war, how is Ukraine supposed to live in peace with this segment of the population? That group will try over and over again to achieve their goals, namely, the destruction of Ukraine.

It’s not easy. But I look at the example of what happened here in Czechia at the end of WWII. The Czechs decided that they simply couldn’t live peacefully with their neighbors who outright sought to exterminate them. Now this could have been handled better, to say the very least and the Beneš Decrees do meet the definition of ethnic cleansing, at least in my book. But that’s because the Sudeten Germans weren’t given the chance to make amends, renounce their devotion to Nazism, and accept being Czechoslovak citizens (to be fair, the Czechs could be pretty goddamn ethnocentric themselves).

Of course, the question of winning the peace is not for any of us to decide; that’s a matter for the Ukrainian people and their duly elected government representatives.
