Not going over well. I am so old I remember when they said the Thruway was supposed to be paid off in 30 years, and the tolls would end, but they didn’t want to fire the toll collectors…

If approved the toll hike would go into effect on January first, 2024. There would be a number of public hearings between now and then.

The Thruway Authority also wants another five percent toll hike in 2027. The toll hike for out of state drivers and those without E-Z pass would increase a whopping 75 percent.

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara is reacting by introducing a bill that would call for a two year freeze on any toll hikes.

The Thruway Authority says the toll hikes are necessary to meet its growing capital and infrastructure needs for a system that is approaching 70 years in age.”

Here in the DFW area, the tolls you pay are to pay for other roads in the area. I don’t mind paying them, because we desperately need transportation routes, but it’s not the road I’m driving on that I’m paying for.

re: #39 Shropshire Slasher

That proposed bill would override earlier legislation enacted back in 1992 that made the Thruway self-sufficient - that it would not get state or federal funds for operating expenses and maintenance. The Authority hasn’t raised rates in years, and they’ve got to deal with higher costs, just like everyone else.

Right and the Mass Turnpike was only supposed to have tolls untill they paid off the bonds they issued to initially build it. Then they played all sorts of games to extend those bond payments, and when they couldn’t stretch it out any more they just said “screw it the tolls are permannet, as a matter a fact why don’t we add some on other roads into boston too”

Oh, and they had no problem firing toll workers to put in the automated tolling once it became feasible.

Very nice. When I was at home for thanksgiving my mom was complaining about how dull her knives were so I was thinking about getting her a nice Japanese knife, but I know she won’t really take care of it and any sort of high carbon steel will rust and she will hate it. So I am leaning towards just getting some of the Victorinox Fibrox pro knives, they seem to be what a lot of actual chef’s recommend for home use, and they are Americas Test kitchen top recommendation year after year.

Of course, I could just bring my worksharp sharpening set with me and sharpen her knives, but then I would have no idea what to get her for Christmas.

This happened in the DC Region as well. The Dulles Airport Access Road has an associated local access highway called the “Toll Road”. It was supposed to drop the tolls when all the bonds were paid off.

However, once interest groups became dependent upon the revenue stream, that goal was forgotten.

All sorts of reasons were found to keep (and increase) the tolls. The current one is to pay for the DC Metro/Subway System to be extended to and past Dulles Airport.

mmmirele  Dec 1, 2022 • 1:04:29pm

Well this is interesting. It’s not something you’d see in the USA. In fact some of the things in this legislation would impinge on our 1st Amendment. I think the Liberal Democratic Party (currently in power) is trying very hard to make the whole “we were buddy buddy with the Unification Church for decades”, with all its implications, go away. Which is going to be hard to do since Komeito, a junior party in the LDP governing coalition, is the party of Soka Gakkai (as I learned from the innkeeper in Ota City last month).

Japanese govt. submits relief bill for victims of religious groups

Japan’s government has put forward a bill to help the financial victims of religious corporations.

That includes the religious group, formerly known as the Unification Church, which has been in the spotlight since the man who shot former prime minister Abe Shinzo cited its exploitation of his family as his motivation.

Now, new legislation aims to prevent more people from being targeted.

The legislation would ban corporate entities from soliciting donations from followers by implying they have a spiritual obligation to do so.

It also requires entities to consider whether their solicitation practices negatively impact the free will of their targets, or their ability to maintain their daily lives.

The bill also prohibits corporations from forcing individuals to take out loans or sell their houses to raise money for donations.

Violators could be punished with up to one year in prison, or a fine equal to about 7,300 dollars. Opposition parties have called for revisions to the bill.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said, “Once the bill is made into law, the government will keep working to make the legislation easier to apply and more effective by putting down the interpretation of its clauses in writing.”

The Diet is expected to discuss the new bill from next week and could enact it during the current session.

Whipping Cream Cake: The Vintage Dessert the Internet Can’t Stop Baking

The original Whipping Cream Cake recipe is as follows:

1 cup butter
3 cups sugar
6 eggs
3 cups flour
1 carton (1/2 pint) whipping cream
2 tsp vanilla

Leave butter to soften at room temperature. Add sugar and cream well. Add one egg at a time, beating after each egg. Add flour and whipping cream (do NOT whip) alternately and add vanilla. Start in a COLD oven at 325 degrees. Bake one hour and 15 mins. Test for doneness.

Note that the recipe calls to start by putting the cake in a cold oven. As Courtney Kassel explains via Food52, this is an important step in a cake like this one, which is meant to be dense. “Baking from cold and warming up only to a relatively low heat (325°F) ensures the cake can slowly cook all the way through, before the outside browns or burns,” she writes.

Once again the Corrupted Court comes out for voter suppression.

Supreme Court revives GOP’s ballot witness requirement in South Carolina: ‘Enabling state voter suppression’

The conservative-dominated U.S. Supreme Court late Monday largely revived a South Carolina law requiring that absentee ballots contain a witness signature, a Republican-passed mandate that could increase voters’ exposure to the coronavirus.

While overturning lower court decisions blocking the requirement, the high court’s ruling (pdf) allows for the counting of absentee ballots that have already been mailed in without witness signatures—as long as they are received by state election officials by October 7.

I have a kosher pareve (non-dairy) version of this:
Substitute 2 sticks Country Crock Plant Butter for the butter
1 carton Rich Whip for the heavy cream.
Proceed as directed.
Sorry it’s not vegan.

Interesting article! Thanks for posting.

This article alleges, among other things, corruption. If this is correct, I expect that the National Government will have to move against the legion quickly. At a minimum, due to pressure by the US, UK and other NATO donor countries.

Theft and sale of advanced weapons to outside parties, is something that the NATO donors are extremely sensitive about.

There have been several reported Russian Intelligence campaigns to label the donations as being sold to third parties in order to take advantage of that concern.

This could also be an effort by the National Government to disband the legions and integrate the soldiers into the regular army structure. Certainly it is time, as the Ukrainians have instituted conscription and no longer have a manpower (?person power?) shortage.

Of course a US constitutional convention would be a circus, but the question of whether German anti-Nazi censorship is wrong (either in Germany or in a US imitation) remains thought-provoking.

There’s also the issue that SCOTUS can redefine nearly at will what is and isn’t protected expression under the first amendment. It would be an extremely modest level of judicial activism to make literal Nazi talk not protected under the first amendment.

I thought of SCOTUS as the safer path, but that’s a gain that’s lost with a single death.

I think we need to deprogram our authoritarians before this country can move forward. I have no idea how to do that.
Maybe we do need to fight at the SCOTUS level and just try to get what gains we can for as long as we can, but even that angle doesn’t look good at all at this time.

Very true. And it is also true that the practical issue of Republicans seizing control of a US censorship office is a show stopper, since they would naturally only censor truth.

But the fact remains that lying and propaganda are so damn effective on so many people that the status quo on first amendment issues is not above criticism.

“The law is clear,” the appeals court wrote. “We cannot write a rule that allows any subject of a search warrant to block government investigations after the execution of the warrant. Nor can we write a rule that allows only former presidents to do so.”

the mere fact that they could be moderated through the political system, by politicians debating and making laws, and judges ruling (imo) by itself doesnt make it political speech. any more than is the ubiquitous yelling ‘fire’ in a theater political speech.

For those of you who can’t do video:

The NTSB report says the air boss told the fighter formation to transition to a trail formation, fly in front of the bomber formation and head toward the 500-foot show line. The bombers were told to fly down the 1,000-foot show line.

The NTSB report says the 500-foot show line and the 1,000-foot show line were 500 feet and 1,000 feet from the airshow viewing line, behind where the audience viewed the show.

NTSB says altitude maneuvers weren’t discussed before the flight or while the airplanes were in the air. According to the data, when the fighter formation approached the designated performance area, the P-63 King Cobra was in a left bank and collided with the left side of the B-17 Flying Fortress, just behind of the wing section.

Both airplanes broke up in flight and hit the ground in a grassy area at the Dallas Executive Airport. The NTSB says a fire ignited in the wing center section of the B-17 as it descended and exploded upon ground impact.

Wreckage of the crash was scattered over Highway 67 and over the airfield at Dallas Executive Airport.

so many things wrong with this Link

35-year-old Daniel Weber, a jailhouse deputy in St Lucie County, Florida, was teaching his minor son how to clean a gun, on the day before Thanksgiving. Weber laid his AR-15 rifle on a “TV tray”. But when the “TV tray” fell forward, the rifle landed on the ground, causing it to fire a shot and hit Weber’s daughter; his daughter began to cry when she was struck on the lower hip/left abdomen. When he applied pressure to his daughter’s gunshot wound, Weber told his son to call for help.

like this part:

When Daniel Weber was taken to custody, authorities noticed the scent of alcohol on his body. Weber admitted that he drank at least six beers during that time, whilst his son claimed that Weber drank two beers and three “mixed drinks” consisting of whiskey and lemonade. His son also added that it’s routine for his father to drink “a few beers and few mixed drinks” prior to his shift.

re: #188 Dangerman

also:

Daniel Weber stated that he had “extensive knowledge of firearms”, given that he “handled several different types” for many years. He even boasted of never having any “accidental discharges with any firearms”, let alone any salient shooting incidents. However, Weber admitting that handling firearms is dangerous cannot make up for the fact that he was “extremely negligent”; the police report noted that Weber “failed to provide appropriate supervision for several minor children”.

So glad I saw the handwriting on the wall and got out of journalism 10 years ago. Loved the job - be it as sports editor or news editor for a small-city paper. Aside from covering games/meetings, also had the chance to write opinion pieces. And investigative pieces such as exposing elected officials who were delinquent on their personal or business property taxes. But I was making less as a news editor in 2012 than I was as a sports editor in 1998. The job quit loving me back.

That’s a shame. The plutocracy is obviously instituting Gilded Age v 2.0. Neutering the press is an essential part of that, and simply starving the press and/or turning it into entertainment may suffice to prevent any Muckrakers v 2.0.

re: #189 Eclectic Cyborg

It may seem easy to laugh at household gun tragedies like this but keep in mind that, as I’ve related here in the past a few times, I myself at age 11 or so had a .22 Long rifle pointed at my head in my own house. It was held by an angry younger brother after a typical fight and our mother was directly behind me during this. He was then and is now at age 50 a gun nut. Also a MAGA “independent” voter. He has never voted anything other than Republican or Libertarian.

That’s the problem I’ve always had with the gun nut vision of America. I fail to see why every moment of anger between people in the US necessarily needs to be a heavily armed moment of anger.

In fact, that’s just completely fucking stupid.

I agree!

For example - To ‘clean’ an AR15 one needs to

A. clean the bore and chamber. (Inside of the barrel.) If there is a cartridge in the chamber, one cannot clean it or the bore.

B. remove and disassemble the bolt. Then clean the parts. An AR15 doesn’t fire if the bolt is removed and sitting in disassembled parts pile on the table in front of you.

Whatever that deputy was doing, he was _NOT_ cleaning that AR15.

As Stonekettle says. There are no accidental discharges, there are only negligent discharges.

I actually didn’t mind it, though the pound cake was much better. The variation in the early MRE’s however, was almost as vile as the Ham & Mother******s.

Peaches and Pound Cake! The very best eats that C-rats had to offer. I once opened a can of Ham&Limas and it had one bean swimming in a can of salty water that had a small glob of fat floating on top. We were getting towards the end of a 3-day supply rota and it was all I had left. Motherfuckers sent me a can with no ham and one motherfucking bean. The motherfuckers.

I agree with EPR-radar, that is indeed a shame. (I was actually going to write “That really sucks.” But EPR did much better wordsmithing.)

And yes, good local reporters are critical to an informed society. But nobody seems to want to pay them a living wage.

I do wonder where we as a society are going. And how we are going to fill that need.

He told me I was wrong, I showed him the receipts, and he still told me I was wrong. Yes, and the spaghetti was good too. The last thing was to heat some water in a canteen cup, put in the coffee, sugar, creamer & then shred the john wayne chocolate bar into it. Once melted it made a nice mocha.

Yup, the disappointment of a fouled up meal will often echo through the ages. And an empty can of salty water would definitely qualify.

I didn’t mind most of the c-rations. The only one I really didn’t like was pork slices. Thick slabs of salty, fat infused gristle. Perfect for a hot sweaty day when one was already feeling a bit dehydrated. Just about anything else, though, worked for me.

Of course, growing up, I sat at the end of the table, after my two other brothers. And I knew that whatever made it down to me was not going to last for seconds servings.

The whole PPP thing was a cluster. Companies that didn’t need the money got the money, leaving small businesses and sole proprietors hung out to dry. And do I need to even *start* about how we just gave out millions upon millions of dollars to religious organizations? I remember how Joel Osteen’s church was one of those, but he got embarrassed enough that he gave the money back. So many other megachurches shamefully kept their hands on the money.

We started getting LRRP rations in ‘69. My practice was to save all the creamers and sugars to mix with the cocoa powder that came in them. I didn’t drink coffee then, stared that when I married. Mrs J had to have hers and I fell in with her habit.

re: #198 ckkatz

Journalism pay, especially at local papers, always sucked. But you could count on built-in overtime as a beat reporter, or generous year-end bonuses as a salaried member. That all began to go away with the rise of the internet in the 1990s. What totally killed local papers was the decision to go with “universal desks” - where the paper would be laid out at a central location - and the printing of papers at a single site 2 or 3 hours away.

We would still have control of what locally-generated articles would run on the front page. But the rest was up to a 22-year-old multiple states away. I remember fielding angry calls from our older readers (i.e. our base subscribers) about not having a write-up on the death of James Arness in the national feed.

The job was always a rush - be it the local team making the state finals, or covering a high-profile criminal case. Beyond that, we were giving readers news that was important to their lives: Tax rates, new water or sewer lines, large-employer expansions or closings. And all on a deadline. The structure today gives you “news” that occurred 2 or 3 days ago. Where once the front page was all local, now state or national wire stories dominate.

As a result, people turn to Fux “News” or internet conspiracy sites. No wonder my county now votes 75-25 for the GOP. Hell, we had 2 Democrats on the 5-member county commission as recently as 2010. There has been a rise in online “newspapers” that are funded by outside groups to push their ideology. And that will only continue. But there is something to be said for sticking it out through the 3-overtime game or the city council meeting that lasts 4 hours - all in order to break the news that the home team won or the city has agreed to rezone a property that just happens to be owned by the mayor’s real estate company.

I remember during road marches when I was driving the tank down the autobahn, I’d take a packet of the instant coffee, pour it into my mouth and then wash the bitter stuff down with a big gulp from the canteen. Nasty taste but a fast caffeine hit.

Not for their beliefs or speech. If thet actually do something more, sure, throw the book at them. But we shouldn’t have thought crimes or speech crimes (aside from the reasonable exceptions that already exist).

You’re right. Congress cannot give the government the power to censor speech. The potential for a “boomerang from hell” effect is too great.
There is something they can do, though, that would be highly effective in throttling hate speech and disinformation, and desirable in many other respects as well: Shut down the multi-level marketing industry and crack down on fraudulent product claims of all kinds. The MLM/health quack segment in particular is a driving force behind the conspiracy complex. The reason is obvious, science rejects their claims, so they must discredit science.
A closely related, and similarly enormous grift, the political pulpit pimps, must also be targeted. None of this requires any major change in existing laws and regulations. It requires the resources to go after the crooks. Outrageously obvious political activist preachers thumb their noses at the law because they know the IRS just does not have the resources to come after them. Any such change requires political change as well, since the Republican Party covers for all these liars and crooks in all kinds of ways. When (not if) the Democrats control both houses and the White House, this should be a priority use of that power.

re: #140 EPR-radar

I don’t think that’s necessarily so. It may well be necessary to have state censorship of sufficiently pernicious ideologies, as Germany currently does vs. Nazism.

I think there’s some terminological confusion going on here. Germany, for example does not censor Nazi speech. There is no “censorship office” checking things before they’re published. Germany censures Nazi speach. Do it in public and you can be tried, and if convicted in court, punished.
